Repost: @thectrshow This is rare video footage of the Greenwood African-American community in Tulsa filmed during the 1920's. The abundance of Black-owned businesses and prosperous families that defined the district earned it the nickname #BlackWallStreet. But on this day, 100 years ago, angry White mobs burned over 30 city blocks to the ground, killing 300 and leaving thousands homeless. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Generations of Black wealth were erased and sadly, not a single person has ever been held accountable.@hbcualum • • • #thectrshow #tulsa #oklahoma #blackwallstreet #tulsaracemassacre #blacklivesmatter #neverforget #rip #memorialday #memories #thisisamerikkka #stopkillingblackkids #whiteprivilege #whitesupremacy #whitegenocide #kkk #racist #bigot #TulsaMassacre #GreenwoodDistrict #TulsaRaceMassacre https://www.instagram.com/p/CPjpvDOgy0k/?utm_medium=tumblr

Fire in Little Africa [TULSA, OK]
Fire in Little Africa [TULSA, OK]
What took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma Greenwood District in the early 1920s represents white jealousy of black excellence. While many were still gaining their footing prior to the Great Depression, black people established their own thriving community in the Southwest. It was said that every dollar spent would pass through 18 different black hands before it left the Greenwood District.  Movie…

Lessie Benningfield Randle, a 105-year old Black woman from Tulsa, Oklahoma, one of two known survivors of the Tulsa massacre that is still alive, has filed a lawsuit demanding reparations. She alleges that the act of racial violence is still haunting the community after almost 100 years. Randle leads the lawsuit claiming she still experiences evocative flashbacks of the burning streets filled with staked up bodies, according to her attorneys. As a child, Randle witnessed the race massacre that occurred on May 31 and June 1, 1921. Around 300 Black people were killed by a white mob, allegedly backed by local authorities and police. Hundreds of homes and businesses were looted, and Tulsa's thriving Greenwood district was torched. The lawsuit accuses the city of Tulsa, Tulsa County, the then serving sheriff of Tulsa County, the Oklahoma national guard, and Tulsa regional chamber of being directly involved in the massacre and having “unjustly enriched themselves at the expense of the black citizens of Tulsa and the survivors and descendants of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre.” The plaintiffs also argue the effects of the massacre are still felt in the Greenwood district today. They say unemployment among Black Tulsans is more than double that of white people in the city and that the median household income for Black residents is $20,000 less than their white counterparts. For decades, the survivors of the massacre fought for justice. In a 2001 report, evidence found that the city indeed conspired with white citizens against Black residents. Direct payments to survivors and descendants were then suggested but no payments were ever made and they were only given a medal by the city. While no specific damage amount was sought in the court filing, the suit estimates just the property damage suffered by residents of the Greenwood district is between $50 million and $100 million in today's currency. • #Tulsa #TulsaMassacre #BlackWallStreet #reparations #unheardvoicesmag #LessieBenningfieldRandle #GreenwoodDistrict https://www.instagram.com/p/CFLfZfaFLz6/?igshid=1qyf9c6s7qnt3

Buck Colbert "B.C." Franklin is known as the lawyer who won the court victory for black residents after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Franklin was born in 1879 and was named after his grandfather, who had been an enslaved African of a Chickasaw family in Oklahoma. After completing his studies, he opened up his law practice in the predominately white town of Ardmore, Oklahoma. However, the racial tension at the time was so strong, he decided to relocate to Tulsa and focus his practice on helping people in the black communities. The Greenwood District of Tulsa was one of the wealthiest enclaves of blacks in the nation, and was known as "Black Wall Street." After the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre that destroyed the district, he led the legal fight against the City Council of Tulsa, who had passed an ordinance keeping Tulsa’s blacks from rebuilding the neighborhoods that had been affected. Franklin filed suit against the city of Tulsa before the Oklahoma Supreme Court. His efforts were successful, and due to his actions. black residents were able to begin rebuilding their community. **Note: The "Remembering Black Wall Street" signage, at the corner of Greenwood & Archer, is a list of Greenwood businesses from 1935, 14-yrs after the Massacre and the rebuilt district. Franklin penned his experience in an autobiography. However, he died in 1960 before the book was published. John Hope Franklin, one of his four children, went on to become a prominent historian and civil rights advocate. John Hope Franklin and his son would later finish Buck Franklin’s autobiography, “My Life and An Era: The Autobiography of Buck Colbert Franklin." #greenwood #blackwallstreet #greenwooddistrict #bcfranklin #blackhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/B15TSLvAAcq/?igshid=11gqu2yxdh0kb

Reposted from @nmaahc #OnThisDay in 1921, the deadliest racial massacre in U.S. history began in the thriving Greenwood African American community of Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was one in a series of actions of racist violence that convulsed the United States in towns and cities beginning with the period of Reconstruction in the late 19th century.
In Tulsa--as in all of these massacres--white mobs destroyed Black communities, property, and lives. More than century after the riot, the people of Tulsa and the nation continue to struggle to reckon with the massacre’s multiple legacies.
Our collection materials help fill the silences in our nation’s memory around events such as the Tulsa Race Massacre and its reverberations, preserving and sharing wider stories of Black communities in Oklahoma, and centering the testimonies of survivors and their descendants.
