Elements of Conure care that more people should know about pt 2
CAGES! Let's break down cages, what does a good cage look like for a conure? For one a good cage has several different types of perches-dowl perches and sand perches should be used VERY sparingly due to the problems they can cause your bird such as bumblefoot which is when your bird’s feet swell up from being positioned in the same way every single time your bird perches and sand perches can be very rough on the bottoms of your bird’s feet causing cuts and irritation. Natural perches are the safest way to go and offer them a huge variety at many different levels in their cage so they always feel comfortable and have the power of choice which will ultimately lead to a more mentally worked bird.
The size of the cage should be AT LEAST large enough to allow the birds to fly around and accommodate their long tails with a dimension of 18" wide, 24" deep, and 36" high. Then you should thoroughly pack the cage with toys that challenge your bird. Note: Toys are meant to be destroyed so if you opt for toys that are made of plastic or similar material that your bird can’t go to town on you’ll quickly find you have a very bored bird. And as I said in my last post a bored bird is an angry bird. When looking at toys for your bird try to stay away from toys with mirrors, these can cause your bird to hyper-fixate on their reflection and will cause them to be depressed once the mirror is removed, small bells that can catch and cut bird tongues in the middle. Toys made of different shreddable materials and foraging toys should be the go-to, and you should have LOTS of them.
Your bird should have food and water on multiple levels of their cage(if this isn’t possible it’s not the end of the world) and should have lots of foraging toys full of treats, or just forgo the use of food bowls and strictly feed from foraging toys but do so slowly since the birds do have to learn how to actually use the toys providing them with a small bowl of food while they learn is very important.
And, like I said in my last post, these are NOT cage pets. Conures need to be out of their cage as often as you can let them be, making sure their cage is set up properly is important but also getting them the exercise of being out of the cage is essential.

Happy Beak-Mitzvah and 13th Gotcha Day to this total superstar! 13 years ago, on this date, my amazing, beautiful, and awesome Jelly Bean was brought to the Queens Zoo where I adopted him. The day after a pretty bad snow storm, a security guard at New York Hall of Science found him at their front doors in a shoe box and thought he belonged to zoo. I’m so glad I could provide a good home for him, that I knew the signs of his kidney issues and that we could work together to voluntarily train his syringe behavior to get him his meds once a day. I cannot tell you how much I love this crazy boy. I hope for many, many more years with him. ❤️ #greencheekconure #yellowsidedgreencheekconure #yellowsidedconure #greencheekconuresofinstagram #conure #conuresofinstagram #parrots #parrotsofinstagram #birds #birdsofinstagram #pets #petsofinstagram #zookeeper #zoolife #zoos #queenszoo #beakmitzvah #teenagebirb #gotchaday #13 #13thbirthday #13gotchaday (at West New York, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co8dKCGr1Xn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hey, Europeans, you could shit your pants and continue whining about escalation with your tail between your legs. Or you could see this move for the regular russian clownery it is where they're puffing their chest trying to show what a big bad country they are by firing intercontinental (or even mid-range) missiles at a city nextdoor amounting to barely anything but PR. But it could have carried a nuclear warhead!!!1!! Well, kindjal missiles can carry a nuclear warhead and can travel 2000-3000 km, hence perfectly capable of reaching European cities while being very hard to detect, and those have been used since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, but smh none of you have been killed by debri in your sleep. russia's adopting a threatening posture because it knows it can be defeated if Ukraine keeps getting the necessary support and supplies. What a lot of you don't seem to get is that in case you don't help us stop it, Ukraine with all of its resources will become a perfect base for russia to attack Europe. So the choice to support Ukraine with weapons is yours, of course, but maybe you should finally realise that you should do it for your own sake, at least.
Today, Ukraine became the first. The first country in the world against which an intercontinental ballistic missile was used.
let's goooo незламний народе first in everything amirite -----------------------------------
no one cares
I don't care what you say. This is the harsh truth. No one gives a fuck if our nation lives or dies.
To use intercontinental missile to strike Dnipro. That's gotta be the most ridiculously expensive temper tantrum ever.
#not aimed at greencheekconure of course I love your blog#also death and destruction very much is russian aesthetic#russian philosophy russian worldview russian soul and evrth related to it#Ukraine#russian war crimes#russia must burn#really hope to live to see it

Bird toy store announcement! (Spoiler: it's my store)
I realize I've neglected to let my Tumblr fam know what my IG fam instigated: I opened up an Etsy shop to sell the little foot toys I made for my flock!
TinyConureTrinkets.etsy.com
For the holiday season, why not order a stocking stuffed with a boatload of toys showcasing the variety of what I make? I can 99% guarantee your birb will find something they love! Why little foot toys? I have always loved the cute foot toys I'd see for sale, only to be disappointed when they were just too big and heavy for my green cheek conures. When birds holding things in their little feet is so cute, how could I cope with this lack? I started making my own. Eventually I had amassed a real hoard of toy making supplies and not enough birds to play with them, so I started sending them out as gifts. Then people started asking where my friends got their toys, and my friends told me to put up a storefront to make it easier to direct people, and here we are! Most small bird toys I've found focus on destructibles, foraging, and hanging toys. These are awesome and a necessary part of providing for birdie enrichment! Unlike budgies and cockatiels, conures and parrotlets are not grass/seed eaters and tend to use their feet more to hold things. They also enjoy dropping things! Dropped objects under perches tend to attract, well, droppings. If your toy basket is full of natural materials, you may have noticed what a pain they are to clean. So I started making toys using plastic and metal that can easily be cleaned with poop remover, put in the sink, even tossed in the dishwasher. What are your toys made out of? I primarily work with plastic and stainless steel, though I also have some lollipop sticks and paper or hemp cordage in some toys. My toys are not painted, and all color on the natural parts is done with food safe dye like vita critter. Are they safe for bigger birds? Bask strength scales quickly the bigger the bird, but I do have toys that can withstand the beaking of my mustache parakeet, including the Tough Pops and, surprisingly, the small plastic chains I use in multiple toys. For reference, a mustache parakeet is about the size of an Indian ringneck. My toys have also gone out to some aratinga conures (sun, nanday, etc) and quakers! I have not heard from anyone with a bird bigger than 120 grams, and I wouldn't recommend much of my stock for anything much bigger than that. If you have a bird bigger than a pyrrhura and you want to try, I'd be happy to work with you or direct you to one of the awesome toy makers who work with materials for bigger birds! Also, my holiday sale is still ongoing. So go, enjoy!

Elements of conure care that more people should know about pt 1:
They form very deep emotional connections, very similar to the bond you would experience with another human, and as such they need all of the time and attention that you can give them. They also need to be highly socialized or else they will become protective of their person and they could become aggressive towards others, they are naturally shy animals and are very cautious in new situations.
And just like a bond you would have with a human conure personalities vary bird to bird(this goes for just about all animals). If I'm talking about just Jackie I would describe him as curious and very sassy, he likes to be the center of attention and is very needy. He loves to be close to me and out and about and just involved in everything I'm doing. He understands my routine and has even figured out how to get the cats in trouble.
That Bond is not unique to us but it took us a lot of work which is another thing people need to very much understand. Conuers are not easy pets, they are not cage pets like finches or anoles these animals need to be involved in everything you're doing and they need mental stimulation more so than smaller birds because if you do not meet the mental needs of your bird they will become destructive and very antisocial, on days when I'm not able to spend as much time with Jackie as he needs he often is very nippy.
Bringing us to point number three of part 1, Conuers need to be trained. There are several amazing YouTube channels out there that have helped me a ton but they need to be trained because they are essentially toddlers with can openers on their faces and if they are not taught bite inhibition they have the ability to break skin, which is very daunting for a lot of first time bird owners.
