Vent_Self Control and Sustainability
Listen, ok, just listen. The last time I ordered my bar soaps, I took note of all the things that were running out to order them ahead of time to save on shipping fees and emissions. This included my facial moisturizer that was close to death.
But now, three monthes later, it has only started to sputter out. And with each sputter there is still some more left. And I understand, you gotta use up what you have first, that is the most sustainable way to live, but damnit I want to try the new bar moisturizer I got!!!!!!
Tbh I did not think I had this level of self control.
Anyway I would love y'all's thoughts on the matter.

day one:
first things first. set up your balcony, make sure it receives enough sunlight for plants to grow comfortably and has good drainage.
in my case, the balcony (though dusty from disuse), had everything functioning perfectly. it had several old pots with dry old soil, which had to replaced.
once i had swapped it for newer, better quality soil, i began sowing immediately.
on the first day, i sowed whatever seeds we already had at home. this included chili seeds, tomato seeds, fenugreek, and salvia flowers' seeds. i also planted cuttings such as that of the spider plant and portulaca (nine o' clock) flower, and planted a small baby aloe vera from a bigger one i already had.
all this i did in small pots and plastic takeout containers, even for plants that can eventually grow to big heights, because they can be transplanted, and it is easier to keep track of seedlings in small pots.
remember to water the soil after seeding, and remember to do it carefully and slowly and gently. the water can flood the pot and mess up your seeds planting.
i also began composting, because it is a sustainable method of making manure, and is not only a good way to use your kitchen waste, but is also incredibly nutrient-rich for plants. it also means that i will not need to buy any chemical fertilisers!!
compost is made of a 60-40 or 50-50 composition of browns and greens. browns consist of dry leaves and other such dried organic material-- which should constitute 60% of your compost-- whereas greens, which includes fresh leaves from your garden or your kitchen's vegetable/fruit waste, should be 40% of the compost.
these two can be layered one upon another-- a layer of browns+ a layer of greens etc (this is the method im going with) or they can be mixed together every time you add something to it.
getting such a large amount of browns can be difficult, which is why cocopeat is widely used instead! and, if you want to avoid buying new cocopeat everytime you compost, some people also use old compost as brown material.
remember, gardens are not any less a responsibility than pets. it is more than a hobby, always. they require effort and hard work, and they require time. your seeds may not always germinate. your cuttings may not always take hold. a garden can take years to really function and bloom. but it is always worth it. remember to check up on them, and don't give up on them!!

This week so far.
Pictured is my cockscomb blooming, homemade watermelon gazpacho a la Sohla El-Wahly, one of my many daily cucumber (with one zuccini) harvests, and the current state of my Crimson Red watermelons.

It's that time of year again!! I have started a few baby plants in my craft room!!
I live in Wyoming, so there will DEFINITELY be at least one more snow storm before spring, so I have to start inside.
I decided I wanted to do mostly flowers to start, Morning Glories, Dandelions, and Marigolds.
I originally went into my gardening adventures HATING Morning Glory flowers, but since I have seen how durable, and climby, and colorful they are, I love them so hard!!! They are now my go to for easy-peasy pops of color all over my yard!
The Dandelions are for tea, and the Marigolds are for pest control.

Morning Glories go hard. They are always my first and most successful flower. Love them!

Also have a Jalapeno plant going and some Cucumbers.
Not pictured (because they have not sprouted, so its just dirt pics so far), but planted the same day: Chives, Basil, Rosemary, Dill, Chamomile, Mixed Peppers, Green Peppers, Serrano Chilis, and micro-greens.
I feel like I'm coming awake from a long nap and it's time to get going!!!

8.2.21 • Today would have been my late grandma Mimi's 90th birthday. She loved to garden and said that some of the most relaxing things to look upon are flowers and water-- that's why she loved living next to a lake full of water lilies. I think she would enjoy this green space.
