Is Belos a Wendigo? - TOH Essay
Last night I came across a drawing of a wendigo and was struck by how similar it looked to Belosâs goop form. With a little more research, I found out that wendigos are usually depicted as extremely skinny and tall humanoid monsters with glowing eyes. Many also have deer-like antlers and skulls. These are all traits that Belos has in his goop form.Â
Left: RyanStanleyArtwork; Right: JamJamTheArtMan
I decided to look deeper into the lore of the wendigo. These beasts are mainly known for their insatiable cannibalistic hunger, but I found the story of their creation especially interesting. Legend says a human becomes a wendigo either as a cumulation of extreme greed and selfishness or when a person becomes a cannibal.Â
Belos has historically been a greed-driven character, a trait which only intensified when he started drawing glyphs on himself in an attempt to gain power. He doesnât eat other humans, but I think he could still be classified as a cannibal in another way. After he made a habit of putting glyphs on himself, he started visibly becoming something inhuman. Now some strange mesh of human and magic, the only way he could fight off the side effects of his mistake was to consume palismen. And since heâs partly made of magic, eating palismen is, in a way, cannibalism.Â
He did appear more or less human up until the finale of season 2, but the monstrous appearance beneath the surface would show itself whenever he went too long without a palisman meal. Consuming palismen didnât fight the monster within him, it just helped him hide it.Â
In Kingâs Tide, the Collector âkilledâ Belos by sending him flying into a wall, leaving behind a green splat. Ever since then, Belos has been unable to keep a human appearance. My theory is that while he didnât die, his human body did. Eating palismen was enough to keep his flesh together, but with it gone he canât hide his true appearance. Heâs been a wendigo for a long time.Â
And then in Thanks to Them, Belos possessed Hunter. There are lots of reasons he might have picked Hunter over anyone else. One Iâd like to point out is that grimwalkers contain palistrom wood. At this point in the show, Belos is quite literally starving to death. Palistrom wood doesnât exist in the realm heâs trapped in. And if itâs true that palismen are the only thing with the ability to subside his hunger, Hunter must have looked especially enticing. And thatâs not even considering the power dynamics of finally inhabiting a human body again, especially one with so much significance to his enemies. Now, according to wendigo lore, there isnât really a way to separate a wendigo from the human itâs possessing while keeping the host alive. I believe the current speculation among other fans is that Hunter only temporarily died because he drowned. Either way, Flapjack was able to sacrifice himself to resuscitate Hunter.Â
Side note: The new scars Hunter had after being possessed are (per my theory) Belos eating away at the palistrom wood in his skin. For this reason, I donât think Raine will have scars after being possessed by Belos.Â
After making all these connections, there was one last question I had. How does one kill a wendigo? I found two different answers from a variety of sources. One is that you need to remove the heart of the wendigo, where the source of their evil lies. The other method (which came up slightly more often) was to burn it with fire.Â
In the recent promo for Watching and Dreaming, the light glyph was referenced a lot. If Belos is a wendigo-inspired villain, maybe he will be affected by light glyphs the same way wendigos are affected by fire. My standing prediction based on all of this is that the light glyph itself will be what destroys Belos for good.Â
Whether or not my predictions come true, I am enamored by Belosâs character design. The comparison Iâve detailed in this post is just another fascinating parallel I wanted to share with you all. I have no idea if his design was really inspired by the wendigo, but the theorizing is most of the fun anyway!Â
Also if I incorrectly credited either of the artworks or if you are the owner and want me to remove it, please let me know!

Here is the "Lost But Now Found" AU One-Shot for Thanks To Them , my dear fellas. Flapjack is going to survive in my AU!
One-Shot: Demonic Possession Of The Grimwalker
It was a quiet evening in Gravesfield. A certain kindhearted celestial boy with otherworldly fluffy lavender hair had a bad feeling! Something was going to happen! What neither Colli nor the Hexsquad suspected was, that the goopy remains of a certain puritan were lurking in the shadows.
Hunter, who was in the kitchen to cook something nice, accidentally got a cut in his finger. The blonde boy looked away for a moment and didn't notice the green goop that was creeping up and entered through the cut his body. Hunter felt weird for a moment, but he decided to ignore it.
Later, Colli floated into the kitchen to give his big brother a soft hug. Hunter, who was about to hug him back, suddenly felt his arms not obeying him. But, in the end, he managed to hug Colli back, even though he squeezed the starboy way harder than he had intended.
To Hunter's dismay, his precious little Sunshine made a little pain-filled noise. "Colli, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to hurt you!" "It's fine, big brother!" Colli said with a sweet smile. What Hunter didn't know was, that it was not him who intended to cause Colli pain.
'What was that? I would never hurt him on purpose!' 'Hehehehehe! Hello, Hunter!' Hunter suddenly heard a familiar voice in his head. 'BELOS?!' Hunter was shocked! 'I noticed something, Hunter! My precious Little Battery is your weakness, and you are his!' Belos spoke up.
Hunter didn't like what Belos just implied. "I have to get out of here!" Hunter whispered to himself. He rushed out of the house. "Hunter, where are you going?" The blonde boy noticed the concern in Colli's voice. 'I am going to keep you safe, Sunshine!' Hunter thought.
"Moonpie, I heard a noise! Is everything alright?" Camila asked. "Mami, something seems to be wrong with Hunter! He suddenly rushed out out of the house and didn't tell me where he was going!" Colli said. "We should look for him!" Vee suggested. Colli, Vee, Camila and the Hexsquad left the house.
Since it was already dark outside, Colli floated up to look for his big brother. Flapjack was flying next to him. It didn't take long for Colli and Flapjack to find Hunter. "I knew you would follow me, my precious Little Battery!" "That can't be! Belos!" Colli gasped, clearly horrified.
"Stay close to me, Flapjack! And stay hidden!" Colli whispered. The starboy was determined to save his beloved big brother, who hadn't just horns and icy blue eyes, he was also covered in curse marks! Colli floated up and cupped his big brother's face with his small hands. "I know you are still in there, Hunter. You are so much stronger than you think! You can fight him!"
As soon as Colli had said that, he touched with infinite tenderness his forehead with Hunter's. 'Colli, I love you so much!' Hunter thought. "What a disgusting display of affection!" Belos spoke up. Meanwhile, Colli hugged Hunter tightly. Hunter managed to take control of one arm to hug Colli back. Unfortunately, Belos turned Hunter's other arm into a blade and, before Hunter could stop him, Belos stabbed Colli in the back!
'NO! Please, no...' Hunter was devastated. But to Hunter's surprise, and Belos dismay, Colli didn't let go of his body! The celestial boy tightend his grip! "I'm going to save you, big brother." Colli, who was in horrible pain, whispered. Even though he was losing a lot of blood, he used his last remaining strength to separate Hunter from Belos with his magic. Hunter immediately knelt down and wrapped his arms around Colli.
The starboy fell unconscious. "No... please don't leave me, Colli! I couldn't live without you..." Hunter whispered. Flapjack, who took a seat on Hunter's shoulder, was concerned. ăHunter, look!ă As soon as Flapjack chirped that, Hunter noticed that Colli was breathing! "H-he is alive! Colli, hold up!" A few minutes later, Camila and the Hexsquad arrived at the scene. "Colli!" "Oh, Moonpie..." "Little Sunflower!" "What happend?" Luz, Vee and Gus asked in unision.
Hunter explained everything what happend. Vee and Luz knelt down. Both girls were shocked to see their beloved little brother in a pool of his own blood! The dark blue liquid already surrounded Colli. Later, at the Noceda Household, Camila took care of Colli's injury. As soon as Colli was patched up, Camila placed him on his bed. The starboy lie on his side. Hunter lie down next to his little Sunshine. "Hunter?" Colli, who finally woke up, whispered. He was relieved as he noticed Hunter's magenta eyes.
"I did it! I saved you!" Colli spoke up with a weak smile. "I thought I would lose you..." Hunter was sobbing. "Don't worry, big brother. I'm immortal. Even such a blood loss can not kill me!" Colli reassured him. The celestial boy cuddled closer to Hunter and fell asleep in his loving arms.

Hunter is a Clone, but not yet a Grimwalker?
In the speculation of Philip being Belos, thereâs been some discussion over how he managed to live so long- Besides of course, Magic, others and myself have suggested that Belos has been using clone hosts to jump from body to body!
The show has already established that Belos can clone the dead (and presumably the living by extension), and possession and body swapping is nothing new; Once Upon a Swap and the nature of the Owl Beast curse!
Itâs fully within the pre-established rules of the show (and also magic tropes in general) for Belos to leap from body to body, and his current body exhibits potential similarities to Grimwalker ingredients as well; That wooden spike and addiction to Palismen hearkening to palistrom wood, the green mark resembling the seaweed growing from a Selkidomus, etc.
However, Grimwalker or not, Hunter is definitely a clone- And his ears look perfectly normal, while Belosâ notably donât! If Belos IS a Grimwalker, then shouldnât his ears be the same triangular shape that we see of most witches, even a cloned and powerless one such as Hunter, derived from a human?
My point is- This could suggest that this is Belosâ original human body, which would mean that he became a Grimwalker, instead of just possessing one! Hence why his ears look changed, because an altered cloneâs wouldnât be...
This of course differentiates clones and grimwalkers, because just as not all clones are grimwalkers, not all grimwalkers are clones! In other words, while Hunter is definitely a clone, that diagram of his face and eyes in the book is too telling;
Thereâs additional evidence to suggest that this clone is going to become a Grimwalker! People have pointed out that thereâs actually a missing Galdorstone in the Looking Glass Graveyard... If Belos is a Grimwalker, perhaps he used that Galdorstone to transform himself into an immortal creature?
And now heâll look for a second one to transform Hunter as well? Which fits with the argument that Belos wouldnât have this page open unless he was currently making a Grimwalker, or at least considering it; Which fits with Hunterâs recent mission to kill the Selkidomus.
The source of Hunterâs bone of ortet is from within his own body, and the same couldâve applied for Philip, turning himself into a Grimwalker instead of making one from scratch- It saves resources too... Especially if Hunter was pre-made for a separate, sentimental purpose. If your nephew is already a slave, why not use him for this as well?
TL;DR Hunter is already a clone, and is set up to become a Grimwalker soon; Which we can ascertain from Belosâ appearance. Itâs always possible that Belos didnât perfect the Grimwalker cloning process at first, hence why his current body, made before Hunter, isnât as perfect on the ears... From a meta standpoint, the unnatural ears tell us that Belos WAS human, even if this body wasnât- Whereas Hunter has only ever been a construct.
But all-in-all, thisâd definitely reconcile the idea that Hunter has to be a clone, but might not yet be a Grimwalker. And on another note, if you can turn pre-existing people into grimwalkers, instead of making them from scratch; How much palistrom wood do you need to transform a person?
Did Philip sacrifice his own palisman to become a Grimwalker?
On another note, Hunter becoming a Grimwalker could also make him potentially immortal, but it depends. It could be like becoming a vampire- Youâre capable of using the drained essence of others to extend your life, but you still need to drain others.
Using palisman bile to become immortal wouldnât work unless youâre a Grimwalker, so if the transformation does occur, Hunter could still opt for a regular lifespan in this case, especially with his growing morals and compassion for Palismen including Lil Rascal.
...Of course, the page with the Hunter diagram also shows three Grimwalker ingredients, so itâs just as likely that Hunter already IS a Grimwalker. Or, âGrimwalkerâ is the next phase of the life cycle of whatever Hunter is... Itâs possible the page is explaining how certain parts interact with each other, before going into specification of how to actually make a Grimwalker, weâll find out eventually.
It really might just be an error on the animatorsâ part, getting the order of pages wrong- Remember when Luz started The First Day already in her multi-track uniform before that was corrected?

Now to finish this up...
LETS TALK ABOUT EDGE OF THE WORLD AND LABYRINTH RUNNERS THE OWL HOUSE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Letâs go first with Edge of the World.
THEY SAID IT WOULD BE A FLUFFY EPISODE. THEY SAID IT WOULDNâT HAVE PAIN
but it did
And ooooh boy, a lot of it!--
Iâm gonna be honest, i got a little confused by the beggining, as i didnât get it was a dream-- But yeah! this episode was great!!
Also, Some things about this episode i would like to mark out: -This episode didnât have a Plot B as the other episodes -Eda probably just let them go because Hooty said that he heard footsteps -Hooty has been very protective with the kids -KING IS A FRICKING TITAN -The collector is probably the one taking the Titan Blood to Belos, using Bill and probably his predecessors. (maybe this is why Belos wasnât excited to get that little of titan blood from Hunter, since the collector has given him a LOT more) -King just wanted to play fetch :(
And, now, some thoughts about the episode: Luz being able to open up and etc to the owl house gang was so... yeah... KINGGG.... MY... NOOOOO. like. Now that heâs a Titan... iâm pretty sure Luz can use his blood to open the portal using a syringe... but belos... belos would KILL him. AND THERE THE THING THAT. The collector probably KNOWS. AND ABOUT COLLECTOR KNOWING... a little thing... did you guys notice that... kingâs eyes when they shined... really REALLY look like...
And also... when king got into luzâs body....
(i know it was a way to tell us whoâs who, but... if luz is swapped with king... and, before, king gets possessed by the collector, then... it literally would kill two birds with a stone-- maybe even three: Luz would be killed AS WELL AS give them the Titan Blood to finish the day of unity + the collector gets a proper body to play with...) iâm gonna make a proper post with this idea hold on iâm onto something
ALRIGHT NOW!! ITS TIME FOR... Labyrinth Runners!!!
this episode was... ooooooh wooooow!!!
with the Cliffhanger of the last episode, people were concerned about this one... but... would you look at that! they didnât even put this as a plot C or something-- and thatâs totally fine... it was already time for the other characters to shine...
So! some points i would like to mark out!:
-Very happy that it took some time to Amity and Willow friendship to reconstruct -Show kids about the breathing exercises to calm yourself calm is SOOO important!! I had a panic attack before, and knowing how to calm myself was very very important to overcome it! -Hunter was reading about grimwalkers in his hideout -Both Gus and Willow are VERY strong! And, their powers seen to amplify when their eyes shine! -GUS DEFEATED A FRICKING COVEN HEAD, WITH THE POWER THE COVEN HEAD SPECIALIZES WITH! eeeven tho the Coven Head doesnât seen that powerful compared to the others, since he uses a amplifier, itâs still a big feat!! -Adrian looks like just a name for the âgood Grayeâ, as Adrian is only used by Graye himself, as the rest always refer him as Graye, + Adrian doesnât appear in the credits. -Principal bump uses his palisman as a hat. And thatâs interesting. -Luz doesnât appear at ALL this episode, this may be the first ep she doesnât appear, and just is mentioned by Amity.
And, at last... some thoughts about this ep DARIUS AND RAINE ARE PROLLY SO FRICKING PROUD ABOUT HEXSIDE BEATING GRAYE UP. i like to think they are. i really like to think. About the books Hunter was reading!! thereâs one called the âExtinction of the Grimwalkersâ...huh? were they extinct? WHAT happened?? were they a species of their own? or were they simply not used anymore for some motive? The Gus, Luz & Willow trio have a new member!! Welcome to the group Hunter!!!! âGraye is gay and homophobicâ AND ANDDDD!!!! FINALLY A GUS EPISODE!! SOME SPOTLIGHT FOR HIMMM WOOOOOOOOO HELL YEAH Bump should be sponsored by Pantene. yeah thatâs it. OH YEAHH Also Also-- about the shining eyes thing with Willow & Gus... they shine just like when darius for example, have his eyes shine green to transform into his abomination form.. AND, in the Ep we see how only gusâ left eye is the one shining to represent how heâs not on control, sooo... maybe Dariusâ eyes shine green bc of 1: bc he IS on control, and dominates the form completely, thus shining with his own eye color, or 2: his eyes just shine green bc abomination eyes are green... which... is prolly that... but........ Luz unappearence in the last episode, analysing the text she sent to Amity, she seems to be in a hurry, since some symbols donât make sense... BUUT, since she was able to give hearts to Amity, + the message was long, she probably is fine (i hope), but hiding. (please for the love of THE TI-- KING. NO MORE PAIN) THIS CLIFFHANGER TOO. THINGS ARE HAPPENING. TRULY HAPPENING!!!! HEXSIDE JOINING THE REBELLION GROUP MAYBE (or the reverse)?? HELL YEAH!!!
AND! i think thatâs it!! Good job on reading it all!
#the owl house spoilers#the owl house#labyrinth runners#edge of the world#toh spoilers#thoughts and more thoughts!!! yeah!!!!!!#and now going to my other interests

Eclipse Lake Theories
What is there to say about the episode? We get to see what Emperor Belos looks like underneath the mask; Amity getting her cute little cat palisman; Amity and Luz dropping the "girlfriends" bomb so heavily, it's just cute.
For Belos, he does look almost harmless without his mask besides the green lash across his face. With one of his ears being exposed, does that mean that him being Philip and/or human is debunked? Honestly, I'd say no...but I have about two or three theories into what is happening.
Number one, his ear. We see that his ear is pointed aside from having the same cut in it that matches Hunter's. While this could potentially debunk him being Philip, what some fail to realize could be that Philip deliberately modified his ears to become better acquainted to the Boiling Isles (or...to take a more darker route, he probably mutilated his own ears Van Gogh style). Really listen carefully to him talking about the Earth in a sentimental tone. Sure, maybe Philip could have either told him about the human realm or whatnot, but to me, this could potentially be the final nail in the coffin about whether Belos and Philip are one and the same. Because there is really no way someone can describe a place like that in great detail if they never been there. I do have an explanation for that, but let's get to the second theory I had.
Going into the second theory, take note of the line streaking his face. To me, it looks plant-like, possibly bark-based. And what other plant or tree in the Boiling Isles would match that?
A palistrom tree.
In the episode, we first are shown a chapter in a book detailing how to create a being called a "grimwalker" which is more or less a homunculus. According to the book, the main ingredients for it include: a galderstone; Selkidomus scales; and palistrom wood. And look at the image of some unidentified figure in the book. Does he not remind us of a certain teenage witch who initially had a staff that created artificial magic because he was born without magic?
Prior to the second season when I first heard about the Golden Guard, I had several ideas in mind on his relationship with the Emperor, but the one prominent theory was that he was a clone of Belos. Given how Belos has to repeatedly eat palismen to replenish his strength, it was likely that his days were numbered. I mean he had been ruling the Isles for fifty years. The dude is old. So, without any extended family to think of, the next best thing was to use magic and technology to create a "son" so he could transfer his essence into the clone ala Emperor Palpatine.
When "Hunting Palismen" suggested that Belos was his nephew, I felt that the theory that was bouncing around in the gray matter of my mind was tossed the monkey wrench. But now we have the concept of a grimwalker and the components that make them up. Because of how the figure in the chapter looks so much like Hunter, it almost confirms that Hunter is more or less a clone.
But it also suggests that Belos could also be a clone himself. Think about it: we are never told if Philip successfully left the Isles. So, given that he would have likely died there, who is to say that, with mastering the nature of the demon realm during his research, he tried to live on in some way by creating a grimwalker that would absorb his soul (if unintentional or part of the plan, you can decide) and then gradually over time, the cycle would continue at least until palistrom wood, one of the main components of the creation of a grimwalker, became scarce. So what I am saying is that Hunter could be the last in a long-line of grimwalkers that carried the soul of Philip Whittebane, but now, he cannot afford to have anything happen to Hunter because he was crucial for the Day of Unity. This would be why Belos sent Kikimora to try to find Titan's blood instead of him.
As for what the crucial part in the Day of Unity Hunter has, I do not know. I am really tempted to say that Hunter would be sacrificed in some way to the Titan. I had the notion that Belos could probably try to transfer himself into Hunter, but at the same time, it would make more sense that instead, Hunter will be the chosen vessel for the Titan to incarnate into. That is if Belos is being truthful of speaking for the Titan.
I did hear a smaller theory that Belos could be the Titan's Palisman, but...while it could be argued, I personally feel that the Bat Queen is better fitted under that theory (or she could have been owned initially by King's relatives).
The third theory. Okay, so say that Belos and Philip being the same is NOT true, but that doesn't mean that they do not have a connection. If Philip never left the demon realm, perhaps he settled down and met a nice witch girl and started a line of witch-human hybrids with the pointed ears being a recessive trait or abnormality. That would also explain why witches like Hunter do not possess natural magic. Maybe the bile sacs are not compatible with melding well with human biology. And that would be why Belos and Hunter use staffs that generate artificial magic. Again that is falling under the assumption that Belos was being truthful with Hunter that wild magic took their family away.
