Xanthoria parietina and Physcia lichens, growing on mulberry bark. Read more below! Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey Xanthoria and Physcia lichens grow in similar environments, and therefore they can be often seen together.  A lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship.  Lichens have properties different from those of their component organisms. They come in many colors, sizes, and forms and are sometimes plant-like, but are not plants. They may have tiny, leafless branches (fruticose); flat leaf-like structures (foliose); crust-like, adhering tightly to a surface (substrate) like a thick coat of paint (crustose); a powder-like appearance (leprose); or other growth forms. Xanthoria parietina lichen, growing on pine bark. Read more below! Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey Xanthoria parietina prefers growing on bark and wood; it is found more rarely on rock. The upper surface is some shade of yellow, orange, or greenish yellow, almost green when growing in shady situations, while the lower surface is white, with a cortex, and with sparse pale rhizines or hapters. The outer "skin" of the lichen, the cortex, is composed of closely packed fungal hyphae and serves to protect the thallus from water loss due to evaporation as well as harmful effects of high levels of irradiation. In Xanthoria parietina, the thickness of the thalli is known to vary depending on the habitat in which it grows. Thalli are much thinner in shady locations than in those exposed to full sunshine; this has the effect of protecting the algae that cannot tolerate high light intensities. The lichen pigment parietin gives this species a deep yellow or orange-red color. The water extract of X. parietina has good antiviral activity in vitro, inhibiting the replication of human parainfluenza virus type 2. In the past it was used as a remedy for jaundice because of its yellow color. Photo taken by me, all rights reserved. This is Pseudevernia furfuracea, commonly known as tree moss. Read more below about this amazing lichen. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey - Large amounts of tree moss (approximately 1900 tons in 1997) are processed in Grasse, France for the perfume industry. - Embalming In ancient Egyptian embalming, P. furfuracea was found packed into the body cavity of mummies, although it is not certain whether this was done because of the supposed preservative properties or the aromatic properties of the lichen. - Antimicrobial activity Soluble extracts from P. furfuracea var. furfuracea and var. ceratea, as well as specific compounds found therein, have antimicrobial activity against a variety of microorganisms. - Medicinal use In Alfacar and Viznar, Andalucia, P. furfuracea is used for respiratory complaints. The thallus is washed and boiled for a long time to prepare a decoction that is drunk. Water extracts of this species have been shown to have a potent protective effect on genotoxicity caused by bismuth compounds. - Heavy metal sorption Pseudevernia furfuracea has been investigated for its ability to absorb heavy metals from solution. It has been shown that it may have potential as a biosorbent for treatment of heavy metal wastes. - Pollution monitors Because specimens of P. furfuracea tend to bioaccumulate heavy metals like Cr, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Fe, Mn and Cu proportional to their concentration in airborne particulates, they may be used as a biomonitor of air quality, although it has been noted that both trace metal accumulation and major element accumulation is partly dependent on the hydration level of the specimen. Watch my new YouTube video on an important medicinal lichen: usnea https://youtu.be/oWu1VtA8qA0 According to Paul Bergner, Author of Medical Herbalism, "The usnic acid in Usnea is effective against gram positive bacteria such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus, making Usnea a valuable addition to herbal formulas for sore throats and skin infections. It is also effective against a bacterium that commonly causes pneumonia". Who knew OAKMOSS is such a valuable material? See more on my courses at jointheflow.net ...discover my books at bit.ly/elefteria ...and read more about that. Evernia prunastri, also known as oakmoss, is a species of lichen. It can be found in many mountainous temperate forests throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Oakmoss grows primarily on the trunk and branches of oak trees, but is also commonly found on the bark of other deciduous trees and conifers such as fir and pine. Oakmoss is commercially harvested in countries of South-Central Europe and usually exported to the Grasse region of France where its fragrant compounds are extracted as oakmoss absolutes and extracts. These raw materials are often used as perfume fixatives and form the base notes of many fragrances. They are also key components of Fougère and Chypre class perfumes.  The lichen has a distinct and complex odor and can be described as woody, sharp and slightly sweet. Oakmoss growing on pines have a pronounced turpentine odor that is valued in certain perfume compositions. Oakmoss should be avoided by people with known skin sensitization issues. It is not a forest, it is an ECOSYSTEM. See more on lichens below! See more on my courses at jointheflow.net ...discover my books at bit.ly/elefteria ...and read more about that. Symbiosis in lichens is so well-balanced that lichens have been considered to be relatively self-contained miniature ecosystems in and of themselves. It is thought that lichens may be even more complex symbiotic systems that include non-photosynthetic bacterial communities performing other functions as partners in a holobiont. Many lichens are very sensitive to environmental disturbances and can be used to cheaply assess air pollution, ozone depletion, and metal contamination.  Lichens may be long-lived, with some considered to be among the oldest living things. They are among the first living things to grow on fresh rock exposed after an event such as a landslide. The long life-span and slow and regular growth rate of some species can be used to date events (lichenometry). #herbaleducation #moss #mosses #nonvascularplants #Bryophyta #lichen #lichens #parnitha #greekforest #hikinggreece #geology #medicinalplants #eatweeds #wildfoodlove #wildfood #myherbalstudies #botany #greekflora #greekfood #wildherbs #foragingforfood #herbalistsofinstagram #herbalremedies #foraging #plantallies (at Parnitha) https://www.instagram.com/p/CV2Kq4iILdP/?utm_medium=tumblr

Did you know that mosses could be the main reason ace ages occurred? See more on my courses at jointheflow.net ...discover my books at bit.ly/elefteria ...and read more about that. Well, no matter what, this forest image is sooo soothing. But let's have a look at the geological history. Recent research shows that ancient moss could explain why the Ordovician ice ages occurred. When the ancestors of today's moss started to spread on land 470 million years ago, they absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere and extracted minerals by secreting organic acids that dissolved the rocks they were growing on.  These chemically altered rocks in turn reacted with the atmospheric CO2 and formed new carbonate rocks in the ocean through the weathering of calcium and magnesium ions from silicate rocks. The weathered rocks also released a lot of phosphorus and iron which ended up in the oceans, where it caused massive algal blooms, resulting in organic carbon burial, extracting more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  Small organisms feeding on the nutrients created large areas without oxygen, which caused a mass extinction of marine species, while the levels of CO2 dropped all over the world, allowing the formation of ice caps on the poles. Juniperus oxycedrus berries. They are used in incense since antiquity. The destructive distillation of the wood yields juniper tar, also known as cade oil. Cade oil is slightly toxic. However, it is a traditional remedy used in various countries of the Mediterranean basin, for skin disorders like psoriasis and some types of dermatitis. Only external use is recommended.
