Demeter, goddess of fertility and the harvest, an image likely based off of a Roman original. (Updated description due to deeper research!!) After doing digging this image is not in fact from the temple of Eleusis but is rather a modern version of a (possibly) Roman relief of a similar kind!

The image which likely served as the basis for the modern one, photograph taken in 1864. Image source Right now it's really unknown where this original relief came from as there's little to no information from the museum listing I found this on, but I will continue to update this as time goes on if I find more info. For anyone else, feel free to update and reblog if you find more info before I do! UPDATE: original image source has been found for the Roman relief, it is located at the Lourve! Source

one thing I’ve realized is that the modern day has seriously screwed with the perception of Hades and Persephone. The whole myth was created to talk about a mother’s grief, most likely written to console mothers who had to give their daughters away for marriage. But the modern day has now made it a cutesy emo misunderstood guy x rebellious girl fighting against her strict mother, villainizing Demeter. And because this is all it’s known now, the moment someone brings up the original myth, they immediately get quieted or insulted.

The golden hair Demeter, with wheat hair that blows in the wind and soft grass skin (like, fuzzy I guess). I imagine she loves mortals very much and is a survivor of the kind who is not ashamed of her past or the vulnerabilities she has experienced. Farming is such a hard job that requires quick thinking and even faster problem solving, so I imagine her always getting her hands dirty too. But this natural appearance camouflages her connection with death, that it is still present due to the fact that the wheat in her hair 'dies'/'dries out'.

Demeter made me think a lot about how we focus on Zeus, Poseidon and Hades, as if they were 'bigger', the big three… But man, she was very worshipped, she was the goddess of fertility and agriculture and DEATH. Was she left aside in the modern era due to pure misogyny perhaps? Because so there re many myths and tributes to her make me think that the real 'big three' were her (Earth), Zeus (Sky) and Poseidon (Sea). Or that there wasn't even a big three at the end...

As for her approach as a controlling mother to Persephone, I don't hate it, sometimes it's interesting, but it seems like just a shadow of Demeter… She's not perfect, but what mother is? Even so, I can't see her as controlling, but rather desperate just to know how her daughter was doing. And it's good to remember that she had more children!! And she was a great mother to them ;w; so, let's see what I'll do with her… but she's a crucial piece!

About the Greek Gods doing shitty things in myths

First of all I have to say that I see the gods as representations of something bigger that we cannot comprehend otherwise. I believe they shape themselves in a way that we need.

Hera is the Goddess of marriage. Of course women who were cheated on would tell their stories through her. Ancient Greece was patriarchal. Of course the stories portrayed her as overly jealous, punishing other women instead of her husband. Zeus is a high male authority figure. Of course he is going to sleep with lots of women and boys in myths. Getting away with rape? Cheating on his wife? Doesn't sound that surprising to me.

The abduction of Persephone is about the changing of the seasons and how mothers feel when they are separated from their mothers through marriage. How common was it to get the girl's consent when she's getting married? Probably just an arrangement between fathers. Hell, how old were the girls?

The myths are reflections of the Greeks, not the gods. Gods are the characters of the stories. I do believe that the Greeks communicated with them through divination. I do believe that their religions were real. But we shouldn't forget that written texts can be messed with for political or social reasons. These are not holy books. We need to consider them carefully.
