Hey all! 

I want to share some of my latest findings on Paleolithic "Venus" goddesses of Laussel (20,000ish years old--location, SW France) and Willendorf (30,000ish years old--location Austria). 

 It's looking more and more like the Venus of Laussel was used as a lunar calendar measurement system--perhaps to measure women's menstrual cycles?!? 

As for the Venus of Willendorf, it seems she was originally carved in Northern Italy and brought to Austria during the Ice Age! And that's not all....it's very likely she was made as a self-portrait. Before the advent of mirrors. Think about it...

The Legend Of The Descent Of The Goddess

Just happen to read this again tonight and wanted to post it here! For this is the best way, in my opinion, that life, death, and rebirth and the Goddess herself is shown in the most purest and beautiful ways I have ever seen or heard it put! 

The Legend Of The Descent Of The Goddess

   “Now our Lady the Goddess had never loved, nut she would solve all the mysteries, even the mystery of death; and so she journeyed to the Underworld!

    The Guardians of the Portals challenged her: ‘Strip off thy garments, lay aside thy jewels; for naught mayest thou bring with thee into this our land.’ 

    So she laid down her garments and her jewels, and was bound, as are all who enter the Realms of Death, the Mighty One. 

    Such was her beauty, that Death himself knelt and kissed her feet, saying: ‘Blessed be thy feet, that have brought thee in these ways. Abide with me; but let me place my cold hand on thy heart.’

    She replied: ‘I love thee not. Why dost thou cause all things that I love and take delight in to fade and die?’

    ‘Lady,’ replied Death, “tis age and fate, against which I am helpless. Age causes all things to wither; but when men die at the end of time, I give them rest and peace, and strength so that they may return. But thou! Thou art lovely. Return not; abide with me!’

    But she answered: ‘I love thee not.’ 

    Then said Death: ‘An thou receivest not my hand on thy heart, thou must receive Death’s scourge.’

    ‘It is fate - better so,’ she said. And she knelt, and Death scourged her tenderly. And she cried, ‘I feel the pangs of love,’

    And Death said, ‘Blessed be!’ and gave her the Fivefold Kiss, saying ‘Thus only mayest thou attain to joy and knowledge.’ And he taught her all the Mysteries, and they loved and were one, and he taught her all the Magics.

    For there are three great events in the life of man: Love, Death, and Resurrection in the new body; and Magic controls them all. For to fulfill love you must return again at the same time and place as the loved one, and you must remember and love them again. But to be reborn you must die and be ready for a new body; and to die you must be born; and without love you may not be born; and this is all the Magics.”

B O O K R E V I E W : . Great Goddesses by @nikita_gill . Rating: 5/5 stars! . I won this book in an Instagram Giveaway through @excusemyreading about 2 months ago and I am so happy to have finally picked it up. It was such a joy to read this anthology full of poetry and prose, flash fiction and short stories, that all focus on Greek Mythology! . I have always enjoyed Greek Mythology even though I've only ever read Percy Jackson (still need to read the last book which this book has inspired me to put on my reading list for this month!) but this really helped me understand who is who with a really handy glossary at the back which I checked for each new God/Goddess, mortal or monster. This book is like giving a modern twist to greek mythology. Giving Goddesses a greater voice as well as other women mentioned. Telling each persons story in a new way that we have never read before. Giving war Gods feelings, and Gorgons sacred purposes, and monsters pure loyalty. Even giving Hades a soft side that can love. Even the stories of Greek Mythology becomes relatable and we turn our heartbreak into how Zeus betrayed Hera giving it that sacred distance that we all need. . I have to mention the art that accompanied a lot of the pieces in this book and they are beautiful! My favourite has to be the drawing of Medusa!
