Fourth in my 2023 Pride line is the image of Kybele, the Great Mother, Mother of the Gods.

Cybele / Kybele is the Phrygian Mother of the Gods, syncretized and identified with the Greek Titan Rhea, and worshiped in Rome as Magna Mater. It is her cult into which Dionysos was initiated to cure him of the madness inflicted by Hera. She is famous for the frenzied dancing and drumming of her rites, and for her gender-deviant priesthood – who may have included transwomen and/or eunuchs.

On the front of the talisman the goddess is shown on her throne, flanked by lions. She holds a pomegranate in one hand and a frame drum in the other. On the back is an image of two pine trees, like that found at her shrine in a temple of Aesclepius.

This talisman was commissioned by author Ariana Serpentine as a part of her personal devotional work, made available to the public by her astounding generosity, and included in this year’s Pride line at her particular request. You can find Ariana’s book, Sacred Gender, wherever fine books are sold.

MAGNA MATER: Un nuevo flamenco al servicio de la herencia y la identidad de ser madre

La compañía Tirititrán Danza-Teatro nos presenta la obra Magna Mater, una idea original  de Amaya Jiménez dirigida por Javier Aranzadi que se representará los próximos días 7, 14 y 21 de abril en NAVE 73. Un puzzle en el que la protagonista de la puesta en escena intenta encajar las piezas de esa herencia e identidad con la dificultad de conciliar el ser madre con la profesión artística, como en su vida real. La música en directo (flamenco, pasodobles, nanas) es el hilo conductor de esta catarsis artística. Un espectáculo en el que la protagonista es una única mujer que recorre el espacio, lo respira, lo gravita, lo danza, lo disfruta…

Este nuevo proyecto dedicado a todas las madres pretende visibilizar el estigma de hablar de identidad como un ejercicio complejo para las mujeres en nuestros días, más aún cuando a ésta se suma la maternidad. “Somos madres con una carga histórica de varios siglos, en una posición de desventaja. Somos ciudadanas y madres, el compendio de nuestras abuelas en la guerra, nuestras madres en la dictadura y nosotras mismas en un tiempo no menos convulso pero sí con algunos derechos adquiridos”.

DANZA TEATRO: La obra presenta un amalgama de talento reunido en un mismo escenario, baile, interpretación y una composición musical de la mano de Alberto Muñoz (guitarra) contando con Ye Xin con el Violín, Alfredo Valero con el acordeón, teclado y contrabajo y como cantaor a David Vázquez. Un movimiento artístico hilado con las coreografías de Gustavo de Ceglie.

Amaya Jiménez: Comienza a  bailar flamenco en 1993, a la edad de 11 años en la Asociación Cultural Flamenca Carmen Amaya. A partir de los 17 años continúa su formación en los Estudios de Danza Amor de Dios con diversos profesionales del flamenco, desde generaciones antiguas como Merche Esmeralda, Ciro o Beatriz Martin. Su amor por la danza la lleva a formarse en ballet clásico con Dagmara Brown (del Ballet Nacional de Cuba) y en danza contemporánea con Gustavo de Ceglie y Manuel Barrero (Losdedae). En 2003 decide compaginar la danza con el teatro y se forma en Interpretación Textual en la Escuela en Artes Escénicas La Lavandería Teatro, graduándose en 2008 con el Titulo de Máster Oficial en Artes Escénicas, por la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos de Madrid. 

Como actriz, continúa su formación estudiando Interpretación ante la cámara, en Central de Cine (2008). Postgrado en Teatro de Movimiento y Expresión Corporal Método Schinca (URJC-ISDAA). Profesionalmente, empieza con la Compañía de Teatro infantil Dragón; forma parte de la Compañía “Kantinelas Teatro”; actúa en “Mío Cid”, de Amaya Curieses (2007); escribe, dirige e interpreta “En el laberinto de mi piel” (2008); actúa en distintos espectáculos: “La cocina de mortero” (2010),2011), “Teatro Jugable Homeward Journeys” (Medialab Prado e Intermediae), “Mata la Reina” (Matadero), “Me too theatre Company” y, recientemente, “Tarde Barroca”, (Madrid, 2017); y realiza ficciones como “Hoy quiero confesar” (Antena 3 TV), “Acacias” y “La otra mirada” (2018, RTVE1). 

Su carrera como bailaora, asimismo, comienza en el año 2000, siendo cuerpo de baile de la Compañía de Danza Duende Flamenco. Como bailaora solista ha participado en varios festivales europeos: Fridburg (Alemania), Taranto (Italia), Roma (Italia), Pueblo Inglés (Casa Patas. Madrid. España) . Ha bailado en El Festival de Flamenco de Brisbane (Australia, 2012) y más recientemente en “Aperitivos Flamencos” (Multiespacio La Srada 2015 y 2016), o en la Performance Musical “Pueblos Trenzados” (2017).
