Photos from a lovely, post-Debby weekend in the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Good, strong breeze to drive out the heat and keep the sky vibrant and constantly on the move. The narrow-leaved gentian (Gentiana linearis) is now at peak bloom in the mountains. This enchanting perennial loves damp mountain seeps and bog edges and is pollinated primarily by bumblebees, which are adept at prying open the flowers or just chewing through them if all else fails. The pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) is also in bloom - my mom used these delicate perennials in her dried-flower arrangements.

A Great Spangled Fritillary finds nectar of parsnip flower to be delicious.
But don't touch it yourself. It can burn you like bleach.
It is one of the worst plants to come into contact with in the Midwest, as summer reaches its Zenith.

@anthropobscene submitted: here are some beings I saw this summer in Massachusetts, US. ID welcome but not essential. Thanks!! 💚
A VERY excellent group of pals! They are in order: a rabid wolf mother and her one million babies, a large and beautiful yellow garden spider, unidentified jumping spider, a great spangled fritillary, a pure green sweat bee, a black swallowtail, a clearwing sphinx moth in the genus Hemaris, and some very cute and tiny but unidentified butterfly chrysalides :)

Floral Fumo of the Week: Canadian Goldenrod(Soldago canadensis) [Also Happy Fall]!
Tumblr media
(i took this picture a few days ago and i know its not friday but its fall equinox so) Today is the first day of fall, which means that there is an equal amount of daylight and nighttime today These florals for the week are Canadian goldenrod (Soldago canadensis). They are flowers that bloom during fall, and they attract lots of pollinators like butterflies and bees. This is one of the last flowers to bloom for bees to collect nectar for the hive to prepare to live on and huddle together for winter.
The name of the species is obvious that they're native to (mostly) Canada. Despite having "sol" in the name, the genus name "solidago" isn't named after the sun, but these flowers are part of the same family as sunflowers (asteraceae) which Yuuka Kazami is known for. Instead, they are named after a fusion word from solidus/solida(means solid/whole/true/strength)and the -ago suffix makes it "to drive/become" so solidago means "to become whole/true/stronger" because it was once used as medicine centuries ago.
Like how one sunflower is actually a cluster of smaller flowers (florets) called pseudanthium, one closer look at a single "flower" on any branch and you can see that those are a cluster of even tinier flowers.
Also I have one more non-fumo related thing to show:
Tumblr media
I quickly found and took a picture of a butterfly while i was trying to take a picture of Yuuka. It blends easily but it's called great spangled fritillary(argynnis/speyria cybele). The genus name is often disputed, sometimes it is called argynnis with speyria being classed as a subgenus, and some consider speyria to be its own genus separate from argynnis. The species is named after Cybele("Mother Nature") that was worshipped for so long at the city of catalhoyuk in what is now Turkey that most information of her is lost. A lot of butterflies tend to be named after gods like this.

Hazy mid-summer day on the Sods, Part 2.
The planet's fantastic life energy reaches its peak in mid to late summer as the sun's precious light shrinks by the day and every living thing senses its time is running out. On the Plains of Dolly Sods, where the growing season is already compressed by the high elevation, plants compete for the swirling, buzzing masses of insects with their gaudy blooms and produce successive waves of berries to seed new generations. The drone of the insects carrying out their instinctive missions of renewal is constantly in your head as they dive and dart and skirt around you. You barely register as a distraction against the great drama playing out here - one whose stakes are survival, regeneration, salvation. I feel so privileged to have connected with this life force in the most intimate way, even for the few short years of my mayfly existence. I will die a happy man for having immersed myself in its lovely, purposeful chaos and becoming part of something much greater than myself.
