Part 3 of 3: A Summer Hike on the Sods.

Above are a few final memories from my various hikes around the Dolly Sods Wilderness and Flatrock Plains last weekend. Amazingly, the rhododendron was still in bloom, which seems unusual even at this elevation, but as a fellow amateur wildflower enthusiast I met on the mountain noted, “This has been a strange year.” She traveled up from Frederick, Maryland, one of many thousands of folks from the Mid-Atlantic region who are drawn as if by some primordial impulse to this land’s ancient bedrock throughout the year. Aside from the rhododendron, the fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) was getting past its prime, but other wildflowers, including the lovely cutleaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata), were just getting to peak. There were also lots of ripe (but not necessarily edible by people) berries to be found, including the luminous red fruits of catberry holly (Ilex mucronata), a deciduous mountain holly often found growing in the same habitat with another deciduous holly, winterberry holly (highlighted in earlier posts).

Cheshire - He felt deeply betrayed when Nevan first took their mother’s side of an argument, future incidents still stung but he wasn’t blindsided

Kali - The leader of the vampire colony that took in Nikolai, she and him rarely saw eye to eye but she never expected him to help lead an attack on the colony

Catberry - From Agape, he was angry and hurt when the wolves attacked and he wasn’t the pup his mother grabbed

Holly, Juniper & Robin - Learning Warbler wasn’t their mother(she is their aunt) was a big blow to them, all the other information that came with it was also A Lot to deal with

Ilex mucronata, the mountain holly or catberry, is a species of holly native to eastern North America, from Newfoundland west to Minnesota, and south to Maryland and West Virginia.

Adaptions:

Ilex aquifolium has adapted well to the dry and cold environments that it resides in. Most of these adaptations have taken place in the leaves of the tree. English Holly leaves have developed an edge covered with several spines to protect against predation.
