So ever since watching Nimona, I thought Ballister looked really familiar, but I couldn't quite place it. Then I was watching Bambi last night, and uh-

Had a silly chat with a friend yesterday, and this came up: "Bambi's b*tchy ass dad in Bambi II and Sesshomaru have the same vibes" I don't know if I'm crazy, but now I CAN'T UNSEE IT...

So... Ronna is... a trauma survivor, right?
In Bambi II, Ronno knows what a deer call is and how to describe it--and that's possibly secondhand info, but where did he hear about it? Maybe another deer witnessed a hunter using a deer call and survived to spread the word, yeah. But also--Ronno has a notch in one of his ears, which could very possibly be man-made.
I kind of have a headcanon Ronno did encounter a hunter, but maybe he was kidnapped or taken in for a short time like Gobo in the book. It probably wasn't pleasant, because he only exhibits trauma symptoms. He probably either wasn't going to be a pet or wasn't going to warm up to a family.
The movie is already about healing from trauma, so I'd love looking at it with Ronno acting as a Bambi foil as well as representing the uglier ways someone heals from trauma (overdramatization, low empathy, selfishness, picking fights, acting "tough" but also being a crybaby, claiming to be grown up but also being behind maturity-wise. That last one is clearly apparent; it's suggested that Ronno is a little older than the other kids by his antlers alone. So why's he the least mature out of all of them.).

OK dont get me wrong I love fics/AU's where Snatcher wakes up in the past as the Prince (I have my own au of that exact scenario)
BUT WHERE IS THE OTHER HALF OF THAT EQUATION WHERE THE PRINCE WAKES UP IN THE FUTURE AS SNATCHER-
IMAGINE THE CHAOS
IMAGINE THE ANGST
IMAGINE HAT KIDS REACTION TO THE CHAOS AND THE ANGST

Bambi: The Great Prince of the Forest —Aesthetic
Tumblr media
The Great Prince of the Forest's Character & Personality
The Great Prince is the protector of the forest and Bambi's father. Unfortunately, he's the widower of the Great Princess of the Forest. After his mate's death, Great Prince tried to appear strong for the sake of his son. However, he would get upset at the meer mention of her. Great Prince is a highly dignified deer who sometimes treats his child harshly without realizing it. Although he has an intimidating appearance and presence, he has a loving heart, especially towards his family. Thus, Great Prince loves his son more than anything. In fact, he admitted he was a lot like his son as a fawn.

i finally realized that a portion of why i go so feral over father-child dynamics specifically is because one time when i was young and spending a summer in france and still hadn't mastered french enough to want to read french books or watch french films, one of the few pieces of english media in my possession were children's book novelizations of disney's bambi and bambi ii and so i read it a lot at a formative time

the things that are generally wrong with the volstovic cycle are made (naturally, by virtue of the setting and pov characters) so much more egregious in shadow magic but like. kouje & mamoru are unfortunately still the only prince/retainer dynamic i’ve ever read like nothing else compares. sorry. forever.
#like again this book is really really horrible politically like i read it for the first time when i was ... 17 maybe? and definitely like#way less educated although even then i could tell that it uhm. werent great. but re-reading it im like HOLD on. this is so not it#but then there's bit from mamoru's pov on page 318: 'let me' he said and i let go immediately allowing his capable hands in place of my own#i remembered how we had stood in the same positions once though reversed. i had been the one to adjust kouje's hair#all his fine braids gone as if they'd never been there to begin with.#did the accomplishments mean anything if what one had to show for them was gone? was i still a prince if i lived in the forest#with no one to see me but the birds?#'there' said kouje stepping away once he'd finished. 'thank you' i murmured not daring enough to raise my eyes#i couldnt bear it if kouje were to decide that i'd done something unforgivable. not after everything else.#CONTRASTED WITH kouje on p 400:#there was so much of the emperor in [mamoru]. looking at him was sometimes like catching an accidental glimpse of the sun#LIKE ITS THE CORNIEST SHIT IN THE WORLD BUT I FELT IT. THAT SHIT WAS GENUINE.#like that never excuses the everything else of it all but i do think its fascinating how they write their characters thats def where their#strengths lie !!! characters and interpersonal dynamics#(like lord temur and the volstov diplomat (''diplomat'') trio anyone#?? i love that shit)#recently read
