I grew up reading "Great Illustrated Classics" and was probably in junior high or high school when I finally realized they were abridged 😨
I have finally gotten around to reading unabridged Oliver Twist (not quite through with it, as I am reading via substack)...
My abridged version very much gave me the impression that Nancy died of an illness and Monks' mother was dead and his father legally married to Oliver's mother. I am utterly shocked. Clutching my (non-existent) pearls!

Anyone else have to hunt down a copy of a Great Illustrated Classics: The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood after your family had to give that and the other books from that series away years ago (among other things to lessen the cost of movers packing stuff) because that one is specifically the only one with illustrations that depict Little John as a massive hunk you crushed on when you were a kid?
No?
Just me?
Alrighty then.

In Which I Have a Beef With Shirley Bogart
_In Which I Have a Beef With Shirley Bogart_ Shirley Bogart did the adaptation for Great Illustrated Classics The Time Machine. I do not like this adaptation. @[email protected] @[email protected] #books #sf
Great Illustrated Classics is a series of books that redacts/abridges novels so they are “easier for kids to read.” And apparently, more palatable for younger readers. Who are going to be damned confused if they ever read Shirley Bogart’s adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine, which won’t have the far future mini adventure with advanced humans, that takes place after the far future “last…

Rereading Gatsby! (Cause I’ve been listening to the musical nooooonstop :) )
Took it as an opportunity to try out some new texture brushes. I guess this is loosely how I saw them back in like… 2015 when I read it in English Lit haha.
But in order we got: Jordan, Gatsby, Daisy, Nick, and Tom! :D

i know for a fact i have made this post before but for me it's very important that bbc merlin is a pointless tragedy. it wouldn't be good (it's frequently not good anyway but it would be a lot further away from good) if it wasn't a pointless tragedy! it's simply not arthuriana if it doesn't go past the high point of the heroic/legendary/high medieval romance stuff and end with detailed rundowns of exactly how everybody got betrayed and died like that is what makes it real arthuriana to me and not just a silly show about a wizard

so I was reading the children's literature version of frankenstein (it's been forever since I read the original so don't know the difference) but as a OUAT fan I noticed this reminded me of The Jolly Roger hehehe

So when I was a kid ,I had a focus problem ,so reading was a struggle for me.....One of the things that helped me get better at reading was the Great Illustrated Classics.Seemed like every school library had these. They were great classics all with pretty black and white illustrations ,and GORGEOUS Covers ,enticed young me,and made me an avid reader .These are some of the ones I read

HAPPY 80th BIRTHDAY Jimmy Page! 🐉🌞🎸
-
To the lad of all lads🫡, dragon prince, guitar slinger, dark lord of rock…yadayada… you have many a nickname! Last year I wrote a novel, so this year all I will say is this:
Thank you for being my muse???? In a way? and inspiring my artistic craft to the zenith always. Your creativity and tenacity is super inspiring, and your music quite literally shaped me into who I am today. 80 years is a long time, and there is so much you have created that is quite remarkable. Its so wonderful to see what has come of it! Keep being that funky lad with a penchant for the magickal. Heres my ode to you, pal!
- Mazie🌞☁️🍂
(Also the dragon is literally Jimmy as a dragon so enjoy?? You know im always on that magickal shit)
