Washington CNN — Rifts between the United States and Israel spilled into public view Tuesday as President Joe Biden warned that Israel was losing international support for its campaign against Hamas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly rejected American plans for post-war Gaza.
The divides, which until now had mostly been contained behind the scenes, reflected growing differences between the two staunch allies as the civilian death toll in Gaza mounts.
Speaking to Democratic donors in Washington, Biden voiced criticism of Israel’s hardline government and said Netanyahu needed to alter his approach.
“I think he has to change, and with this government, this government in Israel is making it very difficult for him to move,” Biden said, calling Netanyahu’s government the “most conservative government in Israel’s history.”
He warned support for the country’s military campaign is waning amid heavy bombardment of Gaza and added that the Israeli government “doesn’t want a two-state solution.”
Speaking ahead of Biden’s comments at the fundraiser, Netanyahu admitted Tuesday that he and the US president disagree on what should happen to Gaza after the war. In a statement, the Israeli leader said: “Yes, there is disagreement about ‘the day after Hamas’ and I hope that we will reach agreement here as well.”
The pair of remarks amounted to some of the most candid to date when it comes to the persistent differences between Israel and the United States, its top international ally.
Before the war broke out following Hamas’ terror attacks on October 7, Biden had been open in his criticism of Netanyahu’s governing coalition, which includes far-right parties. But he has mostly stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Netanyahu in public since the conflict began, despite mounting criticism of the Israeli campaign.
Netanyahu has been asked repeatedly for his vision for a post-war Gaza in interviews with international media since October 7, telling CNN’s Dana Bash in an interview last month that he did see a role for “some kind of civilian Palestinian authority,” albeit one that had been “reconstructed.”
But in his statement Tuesday before Biden’s remarks at the Democratic fundraiser, Netanyahu said: “I would like to clarify my position: I will not allow Israel to repeat the mistake of Oslo.”
Biden’s comments Tuesday – in particular, that the current Israeli government “does not want a two-state solution” — suggest major differences with his Israeli counterpart.
That idea – of a Palestinian state existing alongside the state of Israel – took off in the 1990s, with a series of agreements known as the Oslo Accords, which created, among other things, the Palestinian Authority (PA), which assumed partial control over the West Bank and Gaza.
The PA was effectively driven out of Gaza by Hamas in 2007 but the Biden administration has made increasingly clear it believes the PA should resume governance of the enclave when the war is over.
“After the great sacrifice of our civilians and our soldiers, I will not allow the entry into Gaza of those who educate for terrorism, support terrorism and finance terrorism,” Netanyahu said.
“Gaza will be neither Hamastan nor Fatahstan,” Netanyahu’s statement concluded, a reference not just to Hamas but also to Fatah, the largest Palestinian faction, which was instrumental in the signing of the Oslo Accords, and continues to control the Palestinian Authority three decades later.
Israel began its assault on Gaza shortly after Hamas’ terror attacks, which left more than 1,200 people dead. Biden has said Israel has a right and a responsibility to defend itself.
In phone calls, however, Biden has encouraged Netanyahu to do more to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza, and top administration officials have said there is a “gap” between Israel’s intentions and the realities on the ground.
Speaking Monday evening at a White House Hanukkah reception, Biden acknowledged Israel was in “a tough spot” following the Hamas attack on October 7 and the subsequent war in Gaza. And he alluded to differences with Netanyahu amid the current fighting.
“We’ll continue to provide military assistance to Israel until they get rid of Hamas, but we have to be careful – they have to be careful,” Biden said. “The whole world’s public opinion can shift overnight, we can’t let that happen.”
Biden and Netanyahu have a decades-long relationship that has at times been strained. At the Monday evening reception, Biden said he once gifted Netanyahu a photo and wrote at the top: “I love you but I don’t agree with a damn thing you had to say.”
“It’s about the same today,” Biden said, adding he’d “had my differences with some Israeli leadership.”
Biden administration officials have been pressing their Israeli counterparts in recent weeks to begin planning for what happens in Gaza once the military campaign ends, including insisting on keeping the door open for an eventual Palestinian state.
The US says it would reject any proposal that includes Israeli control over Gaza and has warned against shrinking the Palestinian territory’s boundaries.
The US is also pressuring Israel to open the Kerem Shalom border crossing to allow humanitarian aid trucks to go directly into Gaza on an emergency basis, US officials told CNN.
The Israeli government on Tuesday allowed aid trucks to be inspected at Kerem Shalom for the first time since Hamas’s attack on October 7, but those trucks must still drive back through Egypt before entering Gaza through the Rafah crossing. While the move doubles Israel’s capacity to inspect aid trucks, it does not resolve the bottleneck that is emerging at the Rafah crossing.
Biden raised the issue directly with Netanyahu during their last call last week, the US officials said. National security adviser Jake Sullivan also urged his Israeli counterparts to open up the Israel-Gaza crossing before he arrives in Israel for meetings on Thursday, the officials said.
“Rafah cannot absorb a sufficient amount of aid to meet the needs of the Palestinian people which are only growing as there have been more people displaced,” Sullivan told CNN in a phone interview Tuesday.
“We need the capacity that Kerem Shalom provides – on an emergency basis – to get more food, water, medicine and essentials in to be distributed to Palestinian civilians and we’re putting that quite urgently to the Israeli government to say, ‘We are asking you to do this ASAP because of the nature of the humanitarian situation on the ground,’” he added.
A spokeswoman for the Israeli prime minister’s office declined to comment on the US move. Israel has so far resisted the idea. It cut off all commercial and humanitarian aid traffic from Israel into Gaza since Hamas launched its surprise terrorist attack on October 7 and has vowed to sever all ties with Gaza.

Story of The Great Khali vs. Batista vs. Kane | Great American Bash 2007
youtube
My favorite part of this is Kane making his reflection briefly appear in a bathroom mirror without actually being physically present to scare Edge much like how the Undertaker did the same thing to Randy Orton about two years earlier. My new head canon is that Kane decided to see if he could copy that trick and pull it off well after hearing about his older brother doing it.

COULD cobra kai have started in 2005 and ran for fifteen seasons and if so what would it look like.
right off the bat i have to say that i feel like cobra kai could not have run for 15 seasons, but then i still don’t understand how supernatural ran for 15 seasons. i assume blackmail was involved.
could cobra kai have aired in 2005? i think the answer is less straightforward than it seems. on the one hand, karate kid nostalgia has been at a fairly even level in the 2000s, with a peak following the 2010 reboot. all signs indicate william zabka has been ready and willing to bring johnny lawrence back to the screen since at least the 2007 “sweep the leg” music video, and likely before then. in 2005 he was fresh off of an oscar nomination for his co-writing and production work for a short film, and while it’s possible that he might have seen cobra kai as an unwelcome detour from his plans to be a filmmaker, it’s just as likely that the show would’ve provided an opportunity to get more name recognition and funding for future projects.
ralph macchio was, in 2005, playing himself on entourage. i think he also would’ve also been down with playing daniel larusso at that point.
but would america have been down with cobra kai in 2005? it’s a question with a lot of parts to the answer, so i’m just going to narrow down on one angle in particular - masculinity, patriotism, and the american relationship with the two at the time. (cut for length, i cannot believe how long this got.)
so what’s going on in 2005? dubya has just been re-elected. the iraq war is in full swing. my great-uncle is in the middle of killing the family email list with his relentless messages telling my parents to leave the country if they don’t agree with american foreign policy. the show 24 is pulling in over 10 million viewers an episode. my impression now, as someone who was 9 in 2005 and did not watch tv, is that the television landscape of america was one interested in narratives about america - but in a particular way.
i don’t think the karate kid movies would have done well if they were released in 2005. editing choices aside, it’s a film series that’s deeply condemnatory when it comes to macho bullshit in general, and physical violence in particular. it ties physical violence to structural violence, especially in the second film, and the american military is highlighted as a perpetrator of that violence (especially in miyagi and kreese’s pasts).
i bring this up because i don’t think cobra kai has taken the same stance, or at least not clearly or to the same extent. it’s interesting, because i think the show is generally very intelligent with how it engages in nostalgia - much like the lonely island’s unauthorized bash brothers experience, it’s interested in deconstructing and exaggerating masculinity for comedic effect, but also as part of the process of exploring cycles of trauma and abuse. at the same time, it’s either less interested or less believing in tracing that trauma back to structural causes the way the movies were. (more optimistically, you could say that the showrunners assume familiarity with the movies will cover that base for them.)
i don’t think cobra kai could have or would have aired in 2005 with that same level of indifference/indecision. in part this is because pat morita was still alive at the time, and i think if he’d been involved that would have required a more attentive look at the films’ relationship with america because it’s such a significant part of miyagi’s character. but perhaps the bigger problem is that the concept of the show is - or should be - antithetical to the kind of ra ra, support the troops, torture is just as american as apple pie atmosphere that so much of the country was fully enveloped in. you don’t get johnny lawrence in all his awful dysfunction without kreese. and, canonically, you don’t get kreese without the american military. you don’t get daniel larusso, in all of his dysfunction, without 1) the insanity of the third film, which is driven by kreese and terry silver, neither of whom would be who they are without the military and 2) miyagi’s influence - and again, miyagi’s character and philosophy is one informed by his relationship with violence, and particularly state violence. again, the military is integral to this.
would americans in 2005 have been willing to watch a show so conceptually dependent on acknowledging the destructive nature of the american military? i dunno. it’s possible that the show could’ve attracted an audience politically inclined that way, although if my parents were any indication, a lot of that audience didn’t own a tv. but my instinct is that to garner either mainstream or devoted niche success, cobra kai would have either had something entirely different to say about masculinity (and thus would have been dumb and terrible in ways it currently isn’t), or been more specific with their critique. throwing in shots of the american flag in the cobra kai dojo the way the show currently does would not have cut it, i think.
so what would it have looked like? i’m not sure! probably unwatchable, honestly, but maybe not. to go back to the post that prompted this, i don’t know that johnny lawrence could ever have been such a...whatever dean winchester is in terms of deconstruction and satirization and celebration and dirge of american masculinity, because supernatural did it seemingly unintentionally - cobra kai is quite intentional about it, and i think that keeps it from reaching such hypnotic, dizzying heights. i’d like to think there’s a universe out there where people rushed onto tumblr in the year 2020 to discuss the last great american queerbait of johnny and daniel’s relationship. but it’s probably only one universe. the odds are pretty stacked against it.
#asks#cobra kai#i meant to answer this question and instead wrote 10 paragraphs about the iraq war...as one does#archiesweirdfantasy

In stories about growing up for audiences who are growing up themselves, a strong main character is a necessity. Coming-of-age stories have been around for centuries and have always been popular in cinema, from the days of James Dean to the modern world of Netflix originals.
Related: 10 Of The Best Coming Of Age Movies Everyone Needs To See
While there are many elements of coming-of-age movies that work together to create one timeless tale, such as the soundtrack and shooting locations, the key is a lead protagonist with whom the viewer can wholly identify and empathize. Over the years, there have been some truly impressive young actors who nailed this brief and delivered performances that will forever stand out in their careers.
10 Nick Robinson – The Kings Of Summer (2013)
In a modern coming-of-age tale for fans of Stand By Me (1986), Nick Robinson stars as Joe, a teenager frustrated with his father’s micromanagement. To escape his smothering suburban life, he invites his best friend and an unusual new acquaintance to build a house in the woods and live off the land.
With humor as this movie’s crowning glory alongside breathtaking shots of the Midwest, Robinson demonstrates his acting range in an impressive feature film debut. He manages to effortlessly keep up with comedic veterans like Nick Offerman and Marc Evan Jackson but also demonstrates control and solemnity in the movie’s tenser moments.
9 Thomas Mann – Me And Earl And The Dying Girl (2015)
Greg is an unusual choice for a story’s main character, and Thomas Mann captures his socially awkward nature but chameleon-like behavior effortlessly. Although Greg has made it his mission to “remain on low-key good terms” with every student in school, he struggles to see outside of himself until he becomes friends with terminally ill Rachel (Olivia Cooke).
Related: 10 Best Coming Of Age Comedy Dramas Like Juno
Greg’s development is displayed with as much poise as such a gauche character can be afforded, from seeming emotionally blank to succumbing to grief in Rachel’s room. Opposite Nick Offerman and other great talents in Me And Earl And The Dying Girl, Mann’s comedic delivery, both verbal and physical, is truly something to behold and never wanes.
8 Elliot Page – Juno (2007)
Juno is the blueprint for American Independent cinema, primarily for its Oscar-winning script and unconventional story of teen pregnancy. With a host of celebrated actors surrounding them, Elliot Page shines in what is arguably their most memorable and beloved role.
The offbeat comedy and sarcastic quips of Juno is one for the textbooks, and Elliot carries it with ease from start to finish; the odd vocabulary tossed around rolls as effortlessly as standard English off their tongue. They may appear unimposing in stature, but they dominate every scene with wit and hilarious delivery to make not only an unforgettable movie but a memorable main character.
7 Patrick Fugit – Almost Famous (2000)
Aspiring writer William is something of a wallflower amongst the larger-than-life personalities of the band Stillwater and transfixing roadie Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), but he manages to hold his own and becomes somebody on whom they can all rely. Similarly, Patrick Fugit could have shrunk next to the more experienced actors beside him, but he triumphs.
The fresh-faced actor brings shining optimism and gentleness to a story of wild parties and volatile emotions. He captures William’s level-headed nature and wisdom beyond his years while still exuding the excitement of a newcomer to the rock and roll scene, perfectly balancing youth and innocence with shrewdness and morality.
6 Dustin Hoffman – The Graduate (1967)
A timeless tale of disillusionment in the face of change, The Graduate is fondly remembered for its incredible soundtrack from Simon and Garfunkel and the iconic affair with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft). Besides that, in a career-launching role, Dustin Hoffman proves his mettle as a force to be reckoned with onscreen.
Despite having an affair with a much older woman (and later falling for her daughter), Benjamin is a graceless and self-conscious leading man, and Nichols cast Hoffman with the belief that he had the perfect demeanor for the role. Between his personality and superb acting ability, Hoffman pulls off a memorable performance and is one of the main reasons why The Graduate has become a classic to stand the test of time.
5 Miles Teller – The Spectacular Now (2013)
To bring to life hard-partying Sutter from Tim Tharp’s novel of the same name, the correct actor was called upon. Miles Teller oozes charm in this role and makes it easy to understand how Sutter has made it through life without a thought for the future since everything comes easily to him at the moment.
Besides being the life of the party and effortlessly sweet, Sutter is a young alcoholic who, below the surface, realizes that he is sabotaging his future, and Teller does a marvelous job of exploring this side to the endearing protagonist. The serious self-deprecation that follows reuniting with his absent father, who is a vision of Sutter’s own future, is relayed masterfully and leaves the audience in awe of his performance.
4 Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird (2017)
Star Saoirse Ronan had a number of stellar movies under her belt before Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, with her first Oscar nomination at the age of thirteen only the beginning of an illustrious career. Her range sets her apart from other young actresses in the game, spanning from sci-fi to period drama to raw, coming-of-age movies such as this.
The main character of this tale is anything but meek. Ronan is strong-willed and assured in the role and explores the everyday highs and lows of growing up while cultivating believable onscreen relationships in a way that can place any viewer right alongside her in Sacramento, which feels more like home the longer that you watch her senior year progressing.
3 Greta Gerwig – Frances Ha (2012)
A coming-of-age movie for people who are already of age, Frances Ha chronicles a woman’s journey into adulthood as, while she has technically grown up, it is clear that she’s “not a real person yet”. While most movies of the genre take place in high school, this one takes place in New York as Frances struggles to realize her dream as a dancer, maintain her relationships, and generally get by as a functioning adult.
Related: Greta Gerwig’s 10 Best Movies (According To IMDB)
In another collaboration between Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, the leading lady fits this character like a glove and harnesses the youthful spirit of teenage coming-of-age movies to prove that growing up doesn’t stop when you leave high school. It is an honest depiction of young adult life in that, really, nobody knows what they are doing.
2 Timothée Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name (2017)
In one of his best movies Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet stars as young Elio in a story of young love in 1980s Italy. He is both charming and bashful, causing the viewer to fall in love with him even faster than Oliver does, and he manages to convey so much heart and recognizable pain that the extent of his acting ability is never in question.
While Chalamet brilliantly inspires empathy for Elio’s confusion and inner turmoil throughout his relationship with Oliver, his final performance during the credits is a masterclass in understated yet powerful acting, as we watch the cycle of Elio’s heartbreak and are left reeling from his final, heart-rending glance directly into the camera.
1 Logan Lerman – The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)
At only 20 years old, Logan Lerman delivers one of the most honest and moving portrayals of adolescence in modern-day cinema. For an actor who has had widely varying roles, such as a heroic demigod and a plucky rancher’s son, an introverted character like Charlie could have been difficult to embody, but Lerman does so with an awe-inspiring grace.
Lerman’s presentations of depression and trauma are never extravagant; his performance is highly effective using mostly subtle speech and action. He beautifully showcases Charlie’s innocence and love for his friends and keeps a powerful persona waiting behind a meek exterior to offer one of the greatest portrayals of a coming-of-age character that cinema has seen.

Tony Allen, legendary drummer and Afrobeat co-founder, dies aged 79
Gilles Peterson and Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers pay tribute to the Fela Kuti collaborator, described by Brian Eno as ‘perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived’
The Nigerian drummer Tony Allen, who is credited with creating Afrobeat along with his old bandmate Fela Kuti, died suddenly at the age of 79 in Paris on Thursday, his manager said.
“We don’t know the exact cause of death,” Eric Trosset said, adding it was not linked to the coronavirus.
“He was in great shape, it was quite sudden. I spoke to him at 1pm then two hours later he was sick and taken to Pompidou hospital, where he died.”
Allen was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti’s band Africa ’70 in the 1960s and 70s.
During that time the pair created Afrobeat, combining west African musical styles such as highlife and fuji music with US jazz and funk. Afrobeat went on to become one of the totemic genres of 20th century African music.
Over Allen’s thrilling beat, Kuti laid out his revolutionary and pan-African message, which led him to become one of the abiding icons of the struggle for freedom across the continent. “Few people have the kind of communication that Fela and I had when we played music,” Allen said.
Allen and Kuti recorded some 40 albums together as Africa ’70, before parting ways after a mythic 26-year collaboration, with Allen citing Kuti’s disorganisation and debts to him as the reason for his departure. Such was the hole that Allen left in his band, Kuti required several drummers to replace him.
Of his singular style, Allen said: “I try to make my drums sing and turn them into an orchestra. I don’t bash my drums. Instead of bashing, I caress. If you caress your wife, you’ll get good things from your wife; if you beat her, up I’m sure she’ll be your enemy.”
Born in Lagos in 1940, Allen taught himself to play drums at the age of 18, drawing inspiration from the US jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, as well as contemporary African music. He has attributed his versatility to the need to make a living as a jobbing musician in Lagos in the early 60s. “Latin American, African horns, jazz, highlife … you had to be able to play it all because in the club they asked for it,” he said.
In 1969, touring the US for the first time with Kuti, a meeting with west coast jazz drummer Frank Butler inspired him to practise every morning on pillows, making his sticks bounce off them while he was rolling. “It adds flexibility,” he said. “Very effective. Effortless – that’s what I tried to catch from [Butler].” As part of Kuti’s band, he would sometimes drum for six hours without a break.
The British musician and producer Brian Eno has called Allen “perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived”.
In 1984, Allen moved to London, and by the turn of the millennium had settled in Paris. In the 2000s, he added dub and electronica to his solo output – sometimes to the ire of Afrobeat purists – and became an in-demand collaborator for a younger generation of musicians, among them Jarvis Cocker, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Sébastien Tellier.
On Blur’s 2000 song Music Is My Radar, Damon Albarn sang: “Tony Allen really got me dancing.” The pair would begin regular collaborations soon after. Allen sometimes participated in Albarn’s Africa Express residencies on the continent. He was the drummer in the supergroup the Good, the Bad & the Queen, also featuring Clash bassist Paul Simonon, which released albums in 2007 and 2018. In 2008, Allen, Albarn and Flea formed the supergroup Rocket Juice and the Moon.
Allen was dismissive, however, of a wave of Afrobeat-inspired indie bands such as Vampire Weekend that emerged at the end of the 2000s. “They write the basslines and the horns … but what about the drums? The drummer comes and doesn’t know what to play, because that is the bit with the discipline. He will play what he knows, which doesn’t fit the music.”
His most recent album was Rejoice, a collaboration with Hugh Masekela. The pair met in Nigeria in the 70s, when Allen was playing with Kuti.
This year he planned to work on what he described as a “travel album”, playing with young musicians in Nigeria, London, Paris and the US, “because I want to take care of youngsters – they have messages and I want to bring them on my beat,” he told the Guardian.
Allen, who described himself as a “simple gentle guy”, lived in the Paris suburb Courbevoie.

There’s been a pretty big decline in the number of anthropology majors since 2013.
This coincides with similar declines in other social sciences and humanities fields, in particular those that are more oriented to qualitative analysis.
To understand what’s going on, I think the graph more or less speaks for itself. While there’s been a strong pro-STEM rhetoric in the US for at least 15 years or so — combined with an anti-liberal arts rhetoric — this discourse got very much entrenched as the new normal after the Great Recession. The economists mark the recession as lasting officially from late 2007 to mid 2009, but of course the effects of that period lasted for years (and they’re still going on today). I started my job as a professor in late 2008, but by late 2009, and over the following few years, I was given a pay cut, they stopped cleaning our offices regularly, they turned off the hot water (which we never got back), and some faculty on campus lost their phones, all to cut costs. Lots of departments all over the country were shuttered, faculty were laid off, and tuition skyrocketed. This was also the era of MOOCs (massive open online courses), which were the hottest new invention purpose-built to render college faculty redundant.
Amid this chaos, students just entering college were met with a deafening roar from their parents, the media, and clueless college administrators: if you ever want a job, you need to major in something that will get you one — and that means something “hard” with a strong focus on math (never mind whether you like it or not, or if you’re good at it). This claim is, and always has been, absurd on its face for many reasons, not the least of which is that it’s never been the case that there’s a strong, direct connection between what one majors in and what career path one ends up following. In a small number of technical fields, especially ones related to engineering, it does matter. But it should be obvious to everyone that *not all jobs are related to engineering.* Using that standard for someone working in, say, advertising, or insurance, or retail, or public relations — or basically almost everything — is ridiculous. That’s not so say that those fields don’t involve math or technical skills (they do!), but that they also involve a ton of other kinds of technical skills that one can learn from other disciplines.
Basically, a whole generation of students is being scammed into believing a very narrow set of learning trajectories is the only one worth “investing” in because it suits the needs and desires of a class of tech-minded bosses who desperately don’t want their employees to think critically about what they’re being told to do.
Anyway, back to the chart. It makes sense that 2013 is the year that things begin turning for anthropology BAs because students entering college four years earlier, in 2009, were the first cohort to start at university with the post-recession world fully in place. They were the first to have experienced the recession first-hand, to see millions of people lose their jobs, and then to start college knowing that they, too, would soon enter the job market. And with everyone telling them that anthropology has no value (even Obama, whose mother was an anthropologist, got in on the “bash the liberal arts” game), why would students bother choosing that major? Now, six years later, it’s still something I deal with every day in my job, trying to get my students to see value in what they’re doing in their anthropology courses.
But wait, there’s one more thing, and the real reason I started this post in the first place. First, look at this chart of BA degrees earned, by race:
What you see is a steady increase in the number of BA degrees across various racial categories (the full report discusses problems with these race/ethnicity data, but this is a workable proxy).
But here’s the chart for anthropology:
What you see here is a flat-lining of anthropology degrees among students of color, post-2013, but a precipitous decline of anthropology degrees among white students in the same period. I don’t think this can be explained simply by looking at increasing numbers of students of color in American universities (I think the previous chart would look different than it does if that were the case). I think there’s probably something else going on, but I’m not exactly sure what it is.
I’m just putting this here for some thought. The report I’m drawing from is here.

i could write it better than you ever felt it - three
summary: fuck growing up. this is freedom, this is life, this is youth – 2007 Warped Tour style.
warnings: Language, underage drinking, Merriment (TM)
word count: 3k
Val woke up with a boy on her mind.
She bathes in the feeling of it, the comfort it brings her. She has a crush. After the year she’s had, she wasn’t sure she’d be allowed another. It feels like a little gift.
A little gift in a big, perfect, 6’2” package.
Speaking of package…
Val sinks her orthodontist-perfected front teeth into her bottom lip to tamp down her filthy smile. She closes her eyes and imagines the way he felt underneath her last night when they were rolling around in the dirt. His whole body was hard, and not in the way she’s used to. He clearly takes excellent care of himself, which is always sexy. He was all firm muscle wrapped in strong tendons and ligaments under a curtain of surprisingly soft skin. And, when she got a hand up under his shirt, moaning into his open mouth as she traced the defined lines of his abs, she found a nice dusting of chest hair that got her even a little wetter than she already was.
So yeah, he was hard in more ways than one. And Val can’t stop thinking about it.
She fell asleep in Pomona after a romp with her bounding bunny and woke up in Ventura for another round. It didn’t even occur to her until after her third orgasm of the past 24 hours that this is the first time she’s gotten a full eight hours of sleep in… oh, no, she refuses to think about how long it’s been.
What she’d like to stop thinking about, what she shouldn’t really be so impressed by, is how willing he was to stay put under her and let her explore him, drifting his hands over her body as he liked without demanding, without pushing any limits. I mean, really, how low are her standards that she’s actually charmed by respect and consent? That thinking about it makes her blush?
Well, Val cut her teeth on the boys of Warped Tour. So. Those standards? They’re pretty fuckin’ low.
What a nice thing, though, to have a crush. A nice little summer crush. A boy that makes her heart flutter when he skates by, a face to watch in a crowd when she’s had a few and is simmering for him under the cool June moon. A gift, indeed.
She’s pondering possibilities of flirtation, of stolen kisses, of pink cheeks and bashful glances when her bunk curtain flies open and something crawls inside.
Bea burrows her face into Val’s neck as Val wordlessly scooches further into the bunk to make room. Not that they need much. Bea is the size of a peapod.
“Honey bunch,” Bea greets, nuzzling Val’s hair which still smells faintly of bonfire smoke. It’s so signature Warped, it makes Bea grin.
After a moment of comfortable silence, Bea looks up at Val in wonder. “Did you sleep through the night?”
Val wears a proud smirk and tips an eyebrow at her. “I did.”
“Shit, that’s new. The Mendes kid must’ve really worn you out,” Bea yawns, feigning casual. Val chuckles, bouncing Bea against her side.
“Mmmm, what a man what a man what a man…” Val begins.
“What a mighty good mannnnnn,” Bea finishes, laughing.
The girls giggle together until Bea stops, kicking her bare foot at something brushing against it from outside Val’s bunk curtain.
“Guys, it’s Naveen,” a voice calls, making them both smile and settle, “Val, could you… I mean, I’m sorry, I know it’s early…”
Val makes a pitiful face and drags the curtain back, squinting at her friend.
“Naveen, only you could make it sound like you’re inconveniencing me by asking me to do my job. Bless your heart. I’ll be right out.”
Naveen sheepishly stumbles away probably to start unloading Val’s boxes, which she should be doing herself. She just wanted to… bask a little longer.
“No, so really, how was it?” Bea prompts.
Val shrugs. “We made out for almost an hour. I bet my lips are still swollen. It was… in a word, delicious.”
Bea groans and rolls out of the bunk, landing on her feet like a cat somehow. She shoots Val a displeased look. “Seriously? No fucking? You had a body like that at your disposal and you didn’t let him fuck you?”
Val crawls out behind Bea in Soffe shorts and a My Chem shirt that once belonged to an ex-fling. Her joints creak slightly. Maybe she’s getting too old for this touring junk after all.
“I was craving kisses. You ever get that? Where the only thing that will satisfy you is kissing? I’m talking about good, long, hot, full body kisses. The kind that swallow you up and never seem to spit you back out again,” Val muses, leaning back against the wall rattling with the overworked AC unit.
Bea stares at her, deadpan. “I only crave dick.”
Val sighs and nods, seeing her point. She shoos her friend off the bus to change and reluctantly greet the day.
And reluctant she is because it’s 100 in the shade on the second day of Warped in Ventura, California and Jesus Christ, how do people do this for a whole summer? How did she do this living in a van? She’s gone soft. Throughout the morning, she closes her eyes and thinks of England. She imagines sprinkling rain, warm Scottish wool sweaters, mugs of builders tea by the fire in student housing.
Those thoughts don’t make her any cooler though. Neither do the periodical rushes of teenagers flooding her tent to throw their babysitting money at her in exchange for American Apparel tees and hoodies.
Val isn’t Bea, but she’s a damn good merch girl. She stays cool under pressure, she’s well organized, well prepared and knows when to call for back up. Which is why, when it’s 1pm and her line is 20 deep at least and the girl in front of her is insisting she handed Val 20 ones for that beanie hat and Val must’ve just dropped one, she’s never been happier to see her stupid brother.
Raf swings out to greet his minions like he’s Freddy fuckin’ Mercury, doling out cheek kisses and hugs and Sharpied autographs on various body parts. It gives Val a second to breathe, to regroup, to take care of a few straggling merchgoers before his work is done and he can turn back to her triumphantly like a hero or some shit.
She slumps into her chair and makes a face. He imitates it back flawlessly.
“Thanks, or something,” she sighs, tilting her nose up in the air. He falls into the chair next to her, sweaty from their set.
“How’s it been this morning?” he hums, picking at the fraying holes in his jeans. Raf likes to think of himself as old school – he doesn’t buy holey jeans. He buys jeans and lets them get holey by sheer force of rockstar will.
“Fine. It was nice this morning; I started a sing-a-long with the girls in line who knew every word to Yellow Pages.”
Raf looks impressed. Yellow Pages was an unreleased demo, one of the first solo songs Raf ever wrote. Only the Youtubiest Youtubers have hunted it down. They can both respect that hustle.
They’re quiet for a moment, enjoying the lull, when Raf perks up.
“H-hey, look who it is,” he chuckles, nodding across from them to an extraordinarily tall figure behind the Bayside merch tent looking sweaty and a little lost. Val winces.
“Raf, come on—”
“HEY! SHAWN!” Raf barks, holding up one long dark arm to wave him down. Val groans low out of her nose but shows no indication on her face.
Shawn flails for a second as he spins, not terribly graceful on those big feet of his. He spots where he’s needed and goes white as a sheet. Val smacks her lips.
“You know, he probably thinks you’re going to try to fight him for my honor.”
Raf keeps a friendly, welcoming gaze on Shawn, waving more insistently, “That ship has long since sailed. SHAWN!”
Val holds her head high as Shawn walks over, a little slower than what’s normal, looking extremely hesitant. Raf is eating it the fuck up.
“Hey, buddy, how was your first barbecue?” Raf laughs, feigning ignorance.
Val lifts an eyebrow. Shawn’s eyes snap to hers in a panic.
“Uhm, fine—good, yeah, it was good. Great, even.”
“Great!” Raf repeats, too much vigor in his voice. It’s giving Val a headache, “Great, that’s so great. I’m so glad you enjoyed yourself.”
Shawn nods solemnly, eyes wide, waiting to be scolded by one of the Moreno twins. Val sighs.
“I need to pee, come walk with me,” she insists, shooting her brother a look. Raf smirks and holds his hands up in surrender, staying at his post.
Shawn keeps up with Val’s enormous steps quite handily. He doesn’t even seem to notice how fast she walks, but it’s the first thing a lot of people notice about her.
“So… last night…” Shawn begins.
Val tilts her head, looking at him expectantly. He’s clearly waiting for her to step in and make a comment. Whenever boys start a thought like that, it’s what they want.
Maybe Val’s a little more like Raf than she realized. She likes making him squirm.
“Hm?” she prompts, nodding.
He huffs a gentle breath. “Last night was cool.”
She can’t say she’s surprised. Was she expecting song lyrics to come flooding out of his perfect, soft mouth that she knows very intimately now?
“Last night was cool,” she agrees, stepping a little closer to them as they walk back toward the port-o-potties.
“Are you… uhm, do you think you’re going to the one tonight on the beach?”
She drowns in the sweetness of it for a minute, feels like a cute boy is walking her to her locker and asking her if she’s going to the malt shop after school. She should be wearing a poodle skirt and swooning to match the look on her face right now.
“The Ventura barbecue is always one of the best of the year. What happens on the beach stays on the beach,” she teases, elbowing him playfully. He loosens up a little, chuckling.
“Cool, yeah,” Shawn says, “Maybe we can hang out again, then.”
Val tamps down a smile and tucks a lock of hair behind her ear. He watches it get hooked away and watches it fall back into place against her cheek. He scrubs the back of his neck with his hand as they arrive by the maze of port-o-potties.
Not the most romantic setting, but…
Shawn suddenly tucks a hand against Val’s neck and kisses her. It’s quick, he only lingers for a split piece of a moment to suck a little at her lower lip before he pulls back. His eyes are dancing and he’s got color in his cheeks that can’t be attributed to the heat of the California morning.
“See you tonight,” he says, walking backwards for a few feet before turning and jogging off toward the Forefront van. She watches him go with an amused chuckle and a glance at the seat of his pants.
+
Val tips back and forth with her arm around Steve from New Found Glory and Bea on her other side. She’s filled to the brim with tequila, salt and lime eagerly fed to her by the NFG boys, some of her oldest scene friends.
“I don’t care what you think, I like that new Hannah Montana song,” Val yells into Steve’s ear over the boppy rhythm of “We’re At the Top Of the World” by the Juliana Theory.
Steve rolls his eyes, feigning disappointment. “You’re better than that, Moreno.”
“I most certainly am not!” she laughs, knocking her Corona against his in a lazy, drunken cheers.
It’s 9pm and it feels like the sun has only just set. It’s a little cool so close to the beach so she’s snuggled into Steve for warmth even if he’s more of a brother to her than her own brother sometimes. Her fuzzy brain reminds her to look for Shawn and the Forefront boys again because they haven’t shown up yet and she finds herself feeling a little girlishly eager.
A raucous behind them makes her turn under Steve’s arm. She feels Bea poking her arm but ignores her, smiling smoothly.
Francis has launched himself onto Shawn’s back as they stride down the hill from the vans and buses in a phalanx of men in women’s jeans. Seth is laughing with his hand on his stomach. The others are ignoring them as though it’s something that happens at this same time every day.
Shawn screams, laughs as he kneels and flips Francis over his head to slam into the ground. The barbecue goers all “oooooooh” in sympathetic pain as Francis coughs and tries to regain his breath. Shawn rolls his eyes and helps him up. As soon as Francis is on his feet, he’s leaping onto Shawn’s back again.
Val licks a drop of beer from the corner of her lips and shrugs out from under Steve’s arm, shivering a little. She stumbles past Bea’s clingy arms and “no, noooooo!”s in favor of walking straight into Shawn’s path as he resigns to his new cling-on.
“Hi,” she blurts with a grin, cocking her head at him. Shawn skids to a stop. Francis bounces against his back with a muffled groan.
“Hey,” he murmurs, tightening his grip around Francis’s knees. Francis drunkenly laughs, cheek resting against Shawn’s shoulder. Val looks over at him with a smirk.
“You boys look a little worse for wear.”
“No one came to our set,” Francis sighs.
“That’s not true,” Shawn argues.
“14 people came to our set,” Francis corrects, wrinkling his nose.
Shawn shrugs. “Yeah, that’s about right.”
“We all play to empty rooms sometimes,” she reminds them, nodding past them to the Streets boys throwing Raf into the ocean. Shawn follows her gaze and laughs.
“Can he swim?”
She shakes her head. “Not when he’s more vodka than boy.”
She looks back at Shawn and smiles. He’s a little sunburnt and doubly flushed from whatever booze they pity-drank after their meager set. He smells like a fresh shower and Val can’t help but wonder if it’s for her.
She thrusts her chin in Francis’s direction. “Ditch your sloth boy and come drink with us.”
Shawn unceremoniously drops Francis, who hangs around his neck for a second before thumping into the sand below them with a groan.
“Us?” Shawn asks.
Val nods to NFG and Bea. Shawn’s eyes go comically wide.
“Oh shit,” he breathes.
“C’mon, celebrities are just like us,” she teases, taking his big, warm hand in hers and tugging him toward her friends.
Shawn wants to protest, wants to dig his heels in and shake his head like a toddler, but he thinks after last night he’d follow this woman straight into a wildfire. He pastes on an anxious smile as she introduces him to everyone. The tiny merch girl, Bea, seems especially interested in him, elbowing Val every chance she got like a middle schooler. It makes Shawn wonder if maybe Val has been talking about him. He shivers at the idea.
Shawn and Val sit together in the sand. As the hours grow later, Shawn gets chattier, bonds with Chad and Jordan while Val watches and occasionally moves curls out of his eyes like a total girlfriend but she doesn’t care because she’s lit. A joint is passed around and everything slows down a little.
Shawn is leaning back on his hands, one of which is behind Val so they’re almost, just ever-so-casually intertwined. She leans into his ear to talk sometimes and he feels the hair on his neck stand up from her hot breath on his skin. Her fingers sneak toward his and brush against each other in the sand. Shawn’s skin prickles with need. He chews on his lower lip until Val nudges him.
“I’m ready to go,” she announces quietly. Her eyes look molten and black in the beach bonfire light. His stomach churns. He nods quickly and stands despite all the liquor in his system. He takes her hands and pulls her up with him.
She loops an arm around his waist as she makes her goodbyes. He feels awkward holding her like this, like they’re wearing a sign together that says “we’re leaving to fuck now, have a good night.” But when she slides her hand in the back pocket of his jeans, the worry is gone. He grows antsy as she waves goodbye. When he finally has her leading away from the barbecue, away from the rushing crash of the Pacific and the dull drone of Good Charlotte on the stereo, he places his lips by her ear to speak.
“Your place or mine?”
He’s a little proud of that line.
Val curls into his body and rests a hand on his stomach through his black t-shirt.
“Yours.”
+
Val blinks. It’s quiet. The bluish tint of dawn comes in through the windows.
She tries to lift her head too quickly and finds her cheek is stuck to his bare chest. She winces as her skin peels away from his. She plants her hands on either side of him to push herself up and take stock of the situation.
It’s early, but buses haven’t started leaving for the next stop in Mountain View yet. She is wearing her t-shirt and skimpy pink panties. Her jeans are pooled on the floor of the van next to her. Shawn is deeply asleep beneath her in a pair of boxer briefs. The Forefront boys have all returned to the bus and have therefore seen her in this state of being, passed out on top of their lead singer. Their tour manager Andrew is elsewhere.
Val looks down at Shawn. He looks younger, somehow, as he sleeps. She sweeps some cherubic curls off his forehead and drags a hand down his chest appreciatively. As quietly as she can, she gathers her shoes and jeans in hand and opens the sliding door to the van.
Like a thief in the night, she steals back to the dark silence of the Streets bus, crawls into her bunk and falls into a fitful sleep.

LAVENA LYNN JOHNSON-(July 27, 1985 – July 19, 2005) was a Private First Class in the United States Army whose death, officially ruled a suicide, has attracted international attention amid allegations that her death was the result of rape and murder.
The daughter of Dr. John Johnson, a service veteran, and Linda Johnson,Johnson was born and grew up in Florissant, Missouri. The 5'1" African American honor student enlisted in the Army immediately after graduating from Hazelwood Central High School. She was deployed to Iraq and stationed in Balad. She had been there for eight weeks before her death on July 19, 2005, nine days before her 20th birthday.
***DEATH AND CONTROVERSY***
Johnson's death was officially ruled a suicide by the Department of Defense. However, her father became suspicious when he saw her body in the funeral home and decided to investigate. The Army initially refused to release information, but did so under the Freedom of Information Act after Representative William Lacy Clay, Jr. raised questions about it at the congressional hearings over Pat Tillman's death.
The autopsy report and photographs revealed Johnson had a broken nose, black eye, loose teeth, burns from a corrosive chemical on her genitals, and a gunshot wound that seemed inconsistent with suicide. Several reporters have suspected that the chemical burns were to destroy DNA evidence of a rape.
A spokesman from the House Armed Services Committee said in June 2008 that the committee was looking into Johnson's death, but they were not yet committing to a formal investigation. Christopher Grey, chief of public affairs for the U.S. Criminal Investigative Command for the Army has said that the case remains closed as far as they are concerned.
Following a February 2007 KMOV news report on Johnson's death, an online petition addressed to the House Armed Services Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee was launched.
This was followed by the creation of an official LaVena Johnson website dedicated to developments in prompting a new Army investigation of her death. The petition closed on May 24, 2008 with nearly 12,000 signatures; preparations are being made for delivery to the two committees. In July 2008, the online black activist group Color of Change launched another online petition calling on Henry Waxman, chair of the House Oversight Committee, to conduct a hearing into LaVena Johnson's death and the Army's handling of her case and others like it.
A documentary film about LaVena Johnson's family struggle for justice was made in 2010, directed by Joan Brooker and titled LaVena Johnson: The Silent Truth.
On July 19, 2011, the criminal justice students in the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute (CCIRI) run as a student club by three universities, selected Johnson's case as their case for investigation. The CCIRI's crime scene reconstruction aimed to help shed light on this case that has attracted worldwide attention. The CCIRI investigation did not agree with nor dispute the Army's findings. Sheryl McCollum of the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute calls the case "gut- wrenching." McCollum says the institute normally spends one year on a case, but spent three years on the LaVena Johnson case.
In a phone interview with St. Louis Public Radio, McCollum said that she faults the Army for poor communication, but she does not disagree with its conclusion. "The problem is – number one -- the way the notification happened. And the lack of information given to that family fast enough," McCollum said."There was nothing about this case that we could go back to the
Army to say you need to re-look at it," she said. "We didn't have anything new. We didn't have anything that suggested wrongdoing."-(EDOM-THE BORDER OF WICKEDNESS-LIES & PURE EVIL)
***CONCLUSION***
NO CHILD OF ISRAEL SHOULD EVER BE SERVING IN THIS EDOMITE-(SO CALLED WHITE MAN'S) ARMY. YOU FOUGHT IN ALL OF THEIR WARS FOR NOTHING, FOR FALSE EQUALITY, FOR FALSE LIBERTY AND RIGHTS THAT WERE ONLY CREATED FOR EDOM, BY EDOM AND A WICKED NATION BUILT OFF OF THE BLOOD OF HEBREWS.
PURE EVIL IS UPON GOD'S GREAT EARTH AND WITH THE DEATH OF SISTER LAVENA JOHNSON AND COUNTLESS OTHER ISRAELITES RAPED, ROBBED, AND MURDERED AT THE HANDS OF EDOM, YOU ARE WITNESSING ANOTHER APEX OF THE DEUTERONOMY 28 CURSE PLACED UPON US BY THE MOST HIGH FOR BEING WICKEDLY DISOBEDIENT AND NOT KEEPING HIS LAWS LONG AGO.
LAVENA JOHNSON WAS BRUTALLY TORTURED, RAPED, CHEMICAL LYRE POURED INTO HER VAGINA TO COVER UP DNA, BURNED WITH CIGARETTES, HER SKULL WAS BASHED IN, DRUG OUT OF HER TENT COVERED UP LIKE TRASH AND HAD GASOLINE POURED UPON HER AND SET ON FIRE BY U.S. ARMY GOVERNMENT SERVICE MEMBERS. WAKE UP HEBREWS, WAKE THE HELL UP!!!
WAKE UP MY PEOPLE AND MAKE YOURSELVES SEPARATE FROM THE GENTILE NATIONS, COME FROM OUT OF ALL OF THEIR PAGAN CHURCHES-(THIS INCLUDES ALL PAGAN CHRISTIAN CHURCHES), AND COME BACK TO THE MOST HIGH THY POWER BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.
DEMONIC POSSESSION AND EDOM-(THE CAUCASIAN NATIONS). THEY SHALL CONTINUE TO RAPE, KILL AND ENSLAVE THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL UNTIL THE RETURN OF OUR GLORIOUS KING. COME FROM OUT OF HER MY PEOPLE AS COMMANDED BY THE MOST HIGH BEFORE YOU BECOME THE NEXT VICTIM OF THE HANDS OF EDOM. FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF THE DAUGHTER OF BABYLON IS AT HAND, THUS SAYETH THE LORD. AMEN.
FOR EDOM-(THE CAUCASIAN NATIONS) ARE THE BORDER OF WICKEDNESS-(PURE EVIL) AS THEIR SATANIC BLOODY GENOCIDAL HISTORY CONFIRMS IT. THEY ARE THE SEED OF THE SERPENT AS IT IS WRITTEN AND IT IS WRITTEN.
REVELATION 18:4
4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying-(LORD YASHAYA), Come out of her, my people-(GET OUT-PHYSICALLY & SPIRITUALLY GO FLEE 12 TRIBES OF ISRAEL), that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues-(DEMON POSSESSION-HOMOSEXUALITY-PAGAN CHRISTIANITY KEEPING YOU FROM THE TRUTH-WARS-DEATH-TUMULT-RAPE-ROBBERY-MURDER-DESTRUCTION).
