Resolutions - 2023 Edition

I’ll probably use this as the start of an ongoing series of posts as I work through this, so… feel free to track the Graycloak’s Resolutions 2023 tag to reference later if you’re interested in following along.

The overarching theme for this year will be to just streamline and simplify the increasingly complex web of my magical practice. There are things in practice that are there for the sake of being there, and it’s time to start casting a critical, “does it spark joy,” eye over it all.

Graycloak Office [DRAFT / W.I.P]

"You see, but you do not observe."

Overview

Graycloak is at the top of all offices within Eden, specializing in counterintelligence and tracking down enemies of large corporations. They mainly work for the mega corporations such as Klepto Corp., Asiyah Association, and Briah Corp.

Alongside their jobs of finding spies within large corporations, Graycloak Office takes (partially) direct orders from the Pale Garden by identifying anyone who manages it to unlink themselves from the NeuraNet so that they can be hunted down and eliminated. These individuals are not large in numbers but all wield Singularity Grade technology or powers that appear as a byproduct of the unlinking. Those who unlink themselves often experience rapid changes in terms of appearence and body structure.

(Acording to the theory of the head of Graycloak Office, Miss Yukiko, this is because "the link stuff lowkey has to do with the soul and it like, reflects the soul of that person. Ya understand me?")

The currently known Unlinked:

Aleph "Ahab" Reish

Named after it's inventors daughter this android was given a mission by it's creator that it could never complete: To be just like his daughter. After years of working towards it's goal it started to feel hatred towards it's creator, and not knowing that he had already passed away by the time this hatred was formed, began to hunt him down like a whale for granting it a life that could never be complete.

Aleph was built using modified RiftCorp. technology and is able to create pocket dimension on command.

Gabriel "Erlkönig" Reed

A father who lost his son to a deadly sickness. Unable to get his son to a good enough hospital due to his low rank in his corporation he watched his son pass away in his arms in the middle of street. Now blaming himself for carrying "the soul of the city" within him he actively attacks Asiyah Association buildings and is in a one man war against the corporation.

With his unlinking came the ability to see into other realms and to interact with them. This made him a target of RiftCorp as well.

[REDACTED] "Dying Butterfly" [REDACTED]

A woman who's past has been completely erased at some point in her life.

Rumors speak of a tall woman working for RiftCorp. who's pistols shoot the same butterflies that took thousands of innocent lives years ago. Nothing regarding her unlinking is known.

Minsc: How have you filled your days, since we tore the sticky tyrant from the sky? Kyvir: I've studied Bhaalian history - if you've got any more allies from the last Crisis, I'd like to meet them. Minsc: Minsc has wondered how that sad-mouthed Graycloak and flighty Aerie have fared. And whether Jan ever built his turnip-cannon. But should you meet a Red Wizard, remember - you may have conquered your bloodline, but there is no shame in a small and sensible amount of murder.

Ah, a list of characters I have yet to meet in the earlier games. Excited to learn more about this turnip-cannon. Also I have met exactly one Red Wizard in BG1 so far and I'm quite happy to kill any more that appear! He was bothering Neera and so deserves death. I don't need any encouragement to kill those fuckers.

Also once again very fun that if you so choose Durge has been spending at least part of the last six months researching their family history and I'm still choosing to read it as them beginning to suspect that they're older than they seem and looking into that.

This is a fair point. And after they were canonically called The Graycloaks too. I guess the devs. decided we already had the Graybeards in the game so the Psijics had to switch colours.

Graycloak

The road is dark as we speed through curves, eyes trained far ahead of the high beams, expectantly waiting for the glowing eyes of deer, coyote, and jackrabbits to indicate our need to slow. But it’s something else that causes us to brake and let out gasps of “whoa!” in perfect unison: A gray boulder in the middle of the road, which seems to grow larger as we grow nearer, the headlights from Thomas’ Jeep illuminating the scene so suddenly that our eyes take a moment to adjust.  We come to an abrupt halt. The boulder suddenly shudders. A massive great-horned owl turns to face us, his gray feathers stirring like a sweeping cloak as he shuffles forward in persuit of something else on the road.  It’s a snake; small but quick, and the owl - torn between the need to feed and the want to flee - makes a split-second decision as Thomas and I watch in stunned silence. Graycloak lashes out with one booted foot to hold the snake down, then strikes a killing blow with his beak. The snake writhes and twists like a coiled rope released from its tension, but its dramatic throes do little to dissuade its feathered killer. The owl glances up at us, eyes flashing with an otherworldly blue-white light, and I feel as though there’s meaning to his gaze. Before I can begin to fathom what it may be, Graycloak suddenly unfurs his sturdy wings and takes flight, falling away from the starkly-lit scene with the same grace and permanence as a dream touched by dawn.  There is no sign of the life-and-death drama left in his wake. We take a moment to remember to breathe again, then slowly roll on.    The road is empty now. Just as had been for miles before, and will be for miles ahead.

i dont remember who started it but some ppl on the SA forums starting calling characters with no allegiance “graycloaks” and i still really like that idea.........

if the Red Wizard annoying Neera was Edwin, then he's the one Minsc is referring to. In the first two games they basically had kill scripts for each other. Jan is a gnome who was obsessed with turnips in the second game. Hadn;t made the cannon yet, but did have a very funky crossbow. Basically a prototype for Varric in dragon age. You probably already met the sad mouthed graycloak Xan and didn't recruit him. Aerie is likewise in the 2nd game.

I don't remember if the Red Wizard I ran into was named, actually. Seemed like a dick, although if Honor Among Thieves is anything to go by that's standard operating procedure for them. Anyway I haven't crossed paths with Xan yet in the main game but I did meet him in the tutorial and he pleases me greatly.
