Where The Stars Collide - Chapter 2: Cana
AO3
Summary: Cana makes a bet. tw: Implied/referenced alcohol abuse; also general creepy drunk man behaviour (nothing that didn't happen in the anime)
prologue | 1 | 2 | TBC
Cana Alberona needed a drink.
Something much much stronger than mead, and enough to really get her hammered. Cana had been drinking since noon– no she didn’t have a problem and it was just the lighter stuff really; that was until her dead friend returned and nearly sent her into the underworld with a bone-crushing embrace.
“Cana!” Lisanna had squealed before jumping her, “It’s been so long!”
Cana had never been closer to quitting alcohol in her whole life.
Visions were one thing but the friend she hadn’t seen in five years nearly choking her in a hug in front of the whole guild? Nope. She was never drinking mead, no— ale, rum, water– she was never drinking anything ever again.
Cana sighed and absentmindedly twirled the empty goblet in her hand round and round. She should be happy.
Natsu and the others rescued Lisanna from someplace called Edolas where magic was apparently non-existent, or something, Cana hadn’t been listening. She’d only managed to stomach about 3% of the reunion before putting aside her empty mead barrel, and hightailing it out of Fairy Tail.
The rain accompanied her as she aimlessly wandered from bar-to-bar, only to have the door shut in her face each time; although Cana had garnered a fearsome reputation as a Fairy Tail member, nearly every bartender within a five mile radius had other reasons to be distrustful of the dark-haired wizard – namely her alcohol not-problem.
She’d finally sought refuge in a homely inn just on the outskirts of the city– the old innkeeper took pity when she’d seen the wizard slicked with rain, shivering in a cobblestone alleyway – and forked over whatever jewels she had on her for a bed and another unsatisfying drink, but Cana’s monstrous thirst was particularly unquenchable tonight.
Motioning for another refill, she stared into her sad reflection as the mead slowly rippled into the goblet; finally reaching the conclusion that her sour mood probably had more to do with what Gramps said that very morning.
The old man had pulled her aside to hand her a notice with the guild’s sigil stamped in the far right corner, and the unmistakable scrawl of Fairy Tail’s strongest wizard detailing his intent to return. Cana had dropped the paper in surprise.
Gildarts Clive was coming.
“I wanted you to be the first to know,” Makarov had said, giving the top of her head a kind pat as she’d scrambled to pick up the paper with one hand and hide her tears with the other. After seven long years, her father was coming home.
Cana spent the rest of the day in a daze, unable to read even her cards properly (though not for lack of trying) until she reverted to alcohol to take the edge off. But then Lisanna showed up and all the alcohol in the world couldn’t keep Cana’s world from falling apart around her.
Cana always thought she was good under pressure. Sure, she had her vices but who didn’t, right? She’d kept her worry for her guild mates during the Oracieon Seis debacle at bay, and even strong-armed her way through everything that happened with Laxus and the Thunder Palace. The only time she lost her cool was when–
“Wake up! Why don’t you admire your handiwork ya traitor! You’re patheti–“
Cana sucked her teeth guiltily, recalling Gray’s drooping shoulders, the hardness on his face as Daphne and her Dragonoid terrorised the city.
She should’ve trusted him, the boy she’d grown up with would never have betrayed his guild for any reason, but Magnolia had only just recovered from a certain lightning dragonslayer’s reckless threats weeks prior and Cana had been looking for someone, anyone, to blame. They’d never expected– she’d never expected to fight Laxus; Laxus was as much her family as Natsu and Erza. As Gray.
It was though the universe had quite literally flipped on its head; her family were becoming enemies at the drop of a hat, while their enemies were being treated like family – and though she would forever be indebted to Juvia for her willingness to fight with Fairy tail, Cana wondered what Gramps was thinking when he let Gajeel in– after all he did to Lucy, to Levy.
Suffice to say she’d been looking for an emotional punching bag to relieve her of all that betrayal, and Gray’s unwarranted alliance with Daphne was the icing on the whipped cream of crap that’d become her life. She’d tried to apologise, in her own way, but Gray just waved it off – somehow that hurt more than if he’d never forgiven her at all.
He had a right to be angry. After all, if anyone should’ve known better, if anyone should’ve trusted him irrationally, it should’ve been her. Especially after everything they’d been through.
Cana blinked to see her tumbler once again painfully empty, and the sour taste of mead coating the back of her throat. She sighed; dredging up the past wouldn’t do either of them any good now. And it certainly wouldn’t stop her father from returning.
“Why hello there, pretty lady.”
Ugh. Cana’s lips curled distastefully as a man pulled up a barstool beside her and the sickly sweet croon of flirting trickled into her ear. Normally, she would jump at the opportunity to stuff down her emotions with drunk sex but she was hardly drunk and with the sloppy smile her neighbour was giving her, she doubted he was any good at the latter.
“No thanks,” she grunted, shifting away from him imperceptibly, the creak of her wooden chain echoing into the empty bar.
“Now, hold on a minute,” He scooted closer, the sweaty musk of some undoubtedly cheap perfume-oil pinching at her nose, “Don’t tell me you intend to keep all that lovely mead to yourself.”
“Why not?” She retorted, clutching the barrel protectively, “I paid for it.”
“Haven’t you heard of the saying that a drink has never tasted sweeter than the one you share it with?”
Cana rolled her eyes and turned to face him. This was her first proper look at the intruding man, and if she were in any better mood she’d have to admit she’d have slept with him without a second thought. Broad-shouldered, well-muscled, dark-hair, significantly older than her; it was like checking off a list.
“I’m Bacchus,” he gave her another saccharine smile when he noticed her sizing him up, “Often compared to the god of wine in my hometown.”
Cana snorted.
“Is that right?”
“I assure you,” he moved closer and motioned to her mead barrel, “–no one’s been able to beat me at a drinking contest yet.”
Cana found that hard to believe- despite his reservations, the man looked like a lightweight if she’d ever seen one. All brawn and no brains; they were usually the quickest to fall.
“I’m a member of Quatro Cerberus,” Bacchus continued, “I take it you’ve heard of us.”
“Nope,” She retorted, shifting away again in the hopes that he would get the hint and just leave her the hell alone.
“We seem to have got off on the wrong foot,” he refused to take the hint, “–why don’t we make a bet?”
Cana had a pretty good idea where this was going.
“You want to try and out-drink me?”
The idea was so ludicrous she might’ve laughed in his face if she were any less wary.
Now there weren’t many things Cana was proud of, but her wild teenage years had blessed her with an ironclad liver and a tolerance so high she’d have to toe the line between alcohol poisoning and death to really have a good night out. She was the reason there was a law in Magnolia stating bartenders were required to cut-off Fairy Tail wizards after their fifth barrel.
“No,” Bacchus held out his hand for her to shake, “I want you to try to out-drink me.”
If it were any other night, she would’ve got up and left by now. Normally she had no patience for arrogant asses who seemed determined to make fools of themselves but the thought of going back to the guild hall and facing everyone, facing Lisanna – Lisanna who hadn’t been there for the last five years; who hadn’t seen just how much of her grief Cana had chosen to drink away; Lisanna who’d stayed the exact same, bright-eyed and beautiful while her own heart shrunk unto itself – seemed even more unbearable.
“Fine,” she held out her hand hesitantly, seeing the dark glint in Bacchus’ eyes, “–what’re we betting on?”
“Just each other’s company,” He grinned, squeezing it, “But there’s a catch.”
She raised an eyebrow as Bacchus reached into the folds of his shiny purple, beetle-esque armour to pull out two metal flasks of liquid and held one out to her. Cana looked at him quizzically.
“Lotus-wine,” He explained, uncorking one with the flick of his finger, “A specialty where I’m from. I find mead to be too light for my stomach.”
Cana knew her alarm bells should be going off right now but the smell of the lotus-wine was strangely intoxicating in its newness, and the restlessness she’d been feeling all night was momentarily satiated by the unfamiliarity.
“I hope you’re ready to lose.”
Bacchus only nodded, watching her hungrily. Fingers closing around the flask, Cana tipped her head back and swallowed.
She was floating.
The wine had a vaguely sweet, berry-like flavour but everytime she tried to narrow down the offending fruit, it slipped off the tip of her tongue and sent her careening into a memory she’d desperately been trying to avoid.
She scrabbled at her lucidity for purchase as her vision blurred and tilted, the amber glow of the bar lights and poignant purple of her partner’s armour bleeding into one another to create the reddish-brown hue of her father’s hair.
And suddenly, Cana was in a memory.
It was the winter of X778; she remembers it well because it was the day she’d decided to tell Gildarts the truth.
She was his daughter.
It was Cana’s most well-kept secret, something she hadn’t dared to say out loud even to herself (in case she might bring about a stray jinx), and not a soul at Fairy Tail suspected as much. The only two people who knew were the ones it was impossible to hide anything from, namely Gramps, and the one friend she’d chosen to tell in confidence, Gray Fullbuster.
(Natsu found out by accident but Cana managed to convince him that the reason she and Gildarts smelled alike was because they’d both been cursed by a pixie and he could at no point bring it up with his mentor or the curse would become permanent.)
Cana wore her best dress, and rehearsed her lines over and over: “Cornelia Alberona was my mother. She fell sick and told me to find you before she died. I came to Fairy Tail to find you, Dad.”
She’d even consulted the cards, and they guaranteed that today would be the most auspicious day to receive news about long-lost family. Nothing could possibly go wrong.
Cana woke up bright and early, and waited in the guild hall at a quarter-past-ten: that was when Gildarts and Natsu usually returned from their training. (In hindsight, she was far more jealous of Natsu than she’d let on, after all, Gildarts may have been a great mentor but he was her father first).
Sure enough, the two burst in through a random wall, arm-in-arm, faces mirroring a devious grin, despite Natsu’s sporting a purple bruise that would disappear by lunchtime.
“Hello, there!” Gildarts greeted her the way he always did, one arm on her head to ruffle her hair, and a gentle smile. No more, no less. She often wondered wether it was wrong for her to ask for more.
“Uhm– I–“ Cana stumbled over her words, her mind suddenly blank as the most powerful wizard in  Fairy Tail paused and looked back expectantly, waiting for to continue. The words Cornelia.. sick.. find.. Dad.. all tangled up in her throat and what came out instead was,
“I’m Dad– don’t become sick, you might find Cornelia too!”
Gildarts looked at her bemusedly, but before could open his mouth to ask what the heck she’d meant by that, Natsu tugged at his cape so hard, he ripped a piece right off and went flying into a wooden bench.
“Ow!” The pink-haired boy whined, rubbing his head before earning a sharp smack from Erza on the exact same spot and rushing to hide from the “Monster" behind his mentor. Gildarts picked him up, momentarily forgetting her blunder (forgetting her), and hoisted the little dragonslayer onto his shoulders, who for his part, spent the next ten minutes crowing about his newfound vantage point by taunting his redheaded adversary.
Cana sighed. Guess today wasn’t the right day after all.
“What’re you moping about,” a dark-haired boy interrupted her wistful mumbling, “I can see your sappiness from all they way over there.”
Cana felt her mood lighten as she looked up into equally dark eyes, now flickering with concern.
“And I can see your underwear,” She snickered, having the pleasure of seeing is face go from stoic to horrified in a matter of seconds. Once Gray had located his pants, and Cana had set up her impromptu fortune-telling booth on one of the bar tables, he joined her in keeping watch over the rest of the guild’s shenanigans.
The two of them had drifted together, against all odds, by being excluded from the rest of their guild since they were still children. They wouldn’t be invited to missions or after-parties and hence ended up around the guild-hall with nothing much to do. Cana hadn’t wanted to be friends at first,  the clothes-stripping weirdo was the last person she’d seek out voluntarily, but over the years, found that she hadn’t minded his company. And it seemed to be mutual.
“So, did you tell him?” Gray asked, crossing his arms over his shiny, new guild-mark. Envy shone in Cana’s eyes but she tried her level best not to stare.
“How did you get Gramps to approve the guild-mark,” Cana said instead, “I thought you need to be at least 17 to be a licensed wizard in Magnolia.”
“Ah, this?” He puffed up his chest, pride shining out of every 12-year-old cell in his body, “He said I was ready to have mine.”
“You begged him didn’t you,” She suppressed a smile as Gray’s shoulders went taught.
“Did not,” He sniped, but watched quietly as she laid out the blue deck of oracle cards in front of her in neat lines.
“Did you steal the guild-stamp then?” Cana was only joking but when she saw Gray absentmindedly rubbing the silver cross necklace around his neck (a tell), she gasped, sending a few cards scattering over the wooden floorboards.
“You did!”
“Not on purpose! Natsu dared me to do it!”
“That IS on purpose, you idiot!” Cana groaned and put her head in her hands; when Gramps heard about this they’d all be in trouble. Natsu, Erza, even Lisanna! When one of them was in trouble, all of them were: Fairy Tail motto through and through. And Laxus would give ‘em all hell for it.
“Yeah, yeah, they’ll never know,” Gray shrugged off her nagging and bent over to pick up the fallen cards.
"Sure,” She rolled her eyes, “I bet you can’t keep your clothes on for more than 10 minutes!”
“My clothes ARE on!”
“For NOW!”
“What’s all this about clothes now?”
Cana only just kept herself from gasping out loud as Gildarts’ rumbling voice interrupted their tiff; the wizard then bent over to pick up the final card and lay it on top of the wooden bar table: The Emperor .
Even Gray fell quiet at the sight of the man, awestruck by the raw magical energy that seemed to fill the room with his presence even before he arrived. Gildarts knelt to be eye-level with the children and smiled.
“Now, I remember you trying to tell me something little-miss,” he said kindly, looking at Cana.
“Are you sure you have to leave so soon?” Master Makarov interrupted scurrying at Gildarts’ heels, before she could open her mouth.
“I’m afraid so, Master,” he replied, his face taking on a hardened edge Cana hadn’t seen before, “The beast is too cunning to be slain by normal means; only brute force will work.”
Master Makarov gave a deep sigh and squeezed his guild member’s shoulder.
“Remember what I said to you earlier,” Makarov’s voice took on an almost threatening tone, “–you will always have family here.”
Cana watched their back an forth in confusion, suddenly clapping her hands together as an idea came to her.
“I can read your fortune!” She said excitedly, reshuffling The Emperor card into the blue deck in front of her.
Makarov and Gildarts exchanged a look.
“I haven’t heard those words in a long time,” Gildarts said finally, turning back to her, “– tell me, little girl, was your mother a fortune-teller too?”
“Yes! Corn– uh– cornfields! She used to work in the cornfields in the countryside which is where she learned to read..”
Gray shook his head as if to say ‘smooth.’
“I- uh- I see,” Gildarts nodded awkwardly like what she’d said made perfect sense.
“Anyway,” Cana tried to move on from the hiccup, “Just give me a second.”
She closed her eyes and focused on the small, paper panels of the cards, the runes inscribed onto them and breathe in, breathe out, breath in...
Cana held in a grin as she heard Gray catching his breath at the new party trick she’d learnt specially to impress her father. The cards had begun to glow a faint blue, and float around her in gentle circular patterns with three main ones flipping over to tell the fortune.
She opened her eyes, pleased to find both Gildarts and Gramps clapping obediently, while Gray’s expression had already soured.
“What does it say?” Gildarts prompted.
“You’ll finish the mission very quickly and be back home in a jiffy!” Cana affirmed. The S-class wizard laughed then, gently ruffling her hair again, before taking his leave. A spark of what felt like panic seized her chest, all of a sudden.
“Let’s hope you’re right little–“
“Cana.”
“Hm?” He turned in confusion.
“My name’s Cana. Cana Alberona.” She said matter-of-factly, waiting to see a glimpse of recognition in Gildarts’s impenetrable gaze.
“Well, then,” He smiled knowingly, “Let’s hope you’re right Little Cana Alberona.”
And then her father was gone.
Cana felt herself drift back into the present reluctantly; that hadn’t been the entire memory, there was still more that happened after Gildarts left, but she found herself dipping in and out of the current like a leaf, until it completely swept her back onto shore, back into the ochre glow of the inn on the outskirts of Magnolia.
Cana found that though she’d regained consciousness, the lotus-wine had quite literally swept her off her feet; she was lying on the wooden floorboard, at the foot of her barstool, objectively and inexcusably drunk.
Her pride was more wounded than she was. This is what the great Cana Alberona had been reduced to? For shame.
The memory had left her feeling light-headed, so much so that she didn’t notice Bacchus leaning over her curled up frame in triumph, holding what looked like a turquoise-blue flag.
“Looks like I win,” he crooned, waving the flag in front of her eyes, “Guess I’ll be taking this as a trophy, pretty lady.”
Cana didn’t think much of it, the aftermath of the wine and memories demanded she sleep it off, even here, on the inn’s wooden floorboards; until she turned to fold unto herself and made the shocking revelation that her bra was missing.
Her.. Bra.. Was..
Oh that wasn’t a turquoise flag he was waving in her face, it was her–
Cana’s eyes flashed open, arms protectively clutching at her naked chest; just in time to see the door swing open and Bacchus’s big, broad-shouldered frame fly backwards and hit the wall with a sickening crack of broken bone.
Gray Fullbuster stood at the entrance, his dark eyes flashing with unbridled rage.

summary:  For one night, Gray and Cana remember to be young. - graycana
See: Gray and Cana, teenaged and stupid. Gray sat on the floor of Cana’s apartment with the weight of so many deaths on his shoulders. Cana stood at the lacrima radio, attempting to get the music and booze to drown out her omnipresent loneliness. Both tasted cinnamon whiskey on their lips.
Cana fiddled with the dials and Gray watched her. She twisted the silver dial and drums with a strong bass played from the radio. Cana laughed messily.
“I love this song!” she said and Gray smiled at her. She turned to him and caught that smile. Hand out, she ordered, “Dance with me.”

Gray had always thought he had a fully functioning fight-or-flight response up until he stood gaping in the downtown cafĂŠ doorway as Gildarts Clive flirted with the barista handing him his coffee. Logically, he knew it made sense for Glidarts to be there. They all grew up in the same small town after all. While Gray and Cana chose universities in towns away, Gildarts, like his parents, where determined to stay in their little small town until it was time to retire down south. And while Gildarts job took him on business trips all over the world, it made sense that he would be back in town for the holiday season just like Gray was home on his holiday break.
Gray just wasn’t expecting to see him here, now. Immediately his eyes scanned the little shop for a familiar sight of long flowing brown hair and a teasing smirk only to come up empty. He let out a small sigh feeling guilty about how relieved he was. It’s not that he didn’t want to see Cana again. No matter what, she would always be his childhood best friend and one of the people most precious to him. He just didn’t know what to say her.
The last time the three of them were in the same room, Gray, Cana, and Gildarts, was at their going away party thrown by their parents where Gray and Cana played the role as just best friends while avoiding eye contact across the table. Everyone else in the vicinity seemed unaware of the tension surrounding the 18-year-olds newly exes.
It had all started when they were 16 and still discovering themselves and each other.
They were in Cana’s room since Gildarts was gone again and his parents didn’t like the girl being in their big house alone. Gray had dubbed her room the ‘pit of darkness’ since her walls were painted purple and black and the lighting was low to “match the aesthetic”. What aesthetic that was, Gray had no idea. He had been learned not to try to understand Cana’s logic. They were 16 and angry at the world during those times. Their anger mainly came from feelings of uncertainty and confusion about their place in it, so they dealt with those feelings through fighting, drinking, music, and hooking up with any available person they could. In fact, that played a big part in their current argument.
“I don’t get why your being such a big baby about this.” Cana said rolling her eyes as she hung upside down off her bed. Her feet were in the middle of the bed while her head and neck were positioned above the floor so she could better make eye contact with Gray. “If you kissed him then what’s the big problem with him calling you gay?”
Gray glared at her from his spot on the wall. “Because I’m not. I might not know who all I’m attracted too yet but that doesn’t mean he can just go and assign me whatever label he wants. Only I get to decide who I am.”
Cana rolled her eyes again. “He was only trying to help Gray.”
“Yeah well I don’t need help like that. He lost the right to help when he started to argue with me about my own fucking sexuality. He’s just lucky that I didn’t-”
“Hold on!” Cana abrupted sitting up on her bed. She crossed her legs and looked expectantly at Gray. “Does that mean you will expect other kinds of help?”
“Depends on the help.” He asked warningly
Cana bit her lip and stared thoughtfully in his direction. He wasn’t sure what to make of her sudden change in posture. She seemed worried about something but what? After a few minutes of having an unofficial staring contest, Cana hopped off the bed and made her way over to him. She sat in front of him hugging her legs.
“I have an easy way to find out if your still attracted to girls.”
And before he could speak, her glossed lips were pressed against his.
It should have been weird, and in some ways it was, but gosh he needed this. After weeks of going over every romantic and sexual encounter he ever had questioning if had truly enjoyed it or if he’s been lying to himself the entire time like the last jerk he’d been with said, he needed to lose himself in someone again. Needed a healthy sexual encounter he could rely on that didn’t involve alcohol or other substances. And what better person than Cana, someone he knew since they were toddlers and trusted with his life.
“Is this okay?” She whispered against his lips. He pulled back to look at her blush slowly growing on her cheeks. Her eyes were still pulled closed tight like she was afraid of his reaction. Now that was weird. In all of the years he knew her, he had never seen her so openly afraid before. Usually she hid it behind a tough girl act no one besides himself could see through.
He leaned in and pecked her lips again. “Look at me.” He called softly. He placed gentle kissed down her cheek and across her neck. He took her hand intertwined their fingers placing them at the bottom of his shirt before slowly lifting it off. “Keep looking at me Cana.”
~
That had been the start of a new beginning for them. They transitioned from just best friends to friends who kissed sometimes and occasionally went on these things that could be considered dates to a secret couple not even their family knew about. Why they kept it a secret, he’s not sure. Maybe it was because if they parents knew they were dating the sleepovers would stop. Or maybe it was for a deeper reason neither were ready to talk about. With their new relationship, they grew together in many ways but drifted apart in some. Gray was…hesitant to talk about his attraction to guys with Cana as his girlfriend. He knew she wouldn’t react bad to it, they talked about it enough before they started dating so he knew it wasn’t a problem. But something about being in a relationship with Cana made him feel like he had hide that part of himself. Like he was supposed to be straight while with her because he was in a “straight” relationship. (Looking back Gray could only cringe at what his mindset used to be).
Despite that they feel deeply in love and remained close avoiding any and all talks of sexuality up until graduation. Once the reality set in that they were going to separate schools in different towns, they decided to cool off their romantic relationship and go back to being just friends. Only, that wasn’t as easy as they originally thought, and the awkwardness became too much to bear. They had lost contact after their freshman year of university 2 years ago.
Now Gray stood frozen as Cana’s father’s smile grew as he rushed over and pulled Gray into a squeezing embrace.
“Gray! I can’t believe that’s you! I haven’t seen you around in forever! I almost thought you were a ghost of a younger Silver.” Glidarts threw his head back laughing as he finally released Gray.
“Yeah you know, I’ve just been studying and stuff.” Gray stumbled out awkwardly. He hadn’t been this lost for words in over a year.
“You and Cana both. Look at you two, I raised a couple of scholars!” He clapped Gray once on the back hard. “I know, why don’t you come over for dinner tonight? Cana’s back in town and I know she’d love to see you.”
Gray went into full blown panic mode. “Oh, I can’t! Its my first night in town so I gotta spend it with my parents. You know how they are.”
Glidarts waved him off heading towards the door. “You probably see them all the time me and Canabelle haven’t seen you in forever. And I’ve done a ton of renovations I want you to see. Tell your folks I said hi and that your eating with us tonight. Feel free to stop by in a few hours.” And with that he was gone.
Gray watched the gentle yet destructive man stumble his way out of the coffee shop with a yell of protest stuck in his throat. Forgetting the order he entered the shop to place, he pushed open the doors fingers already pulling is phone out of his pocket. With quick fingers he looked for the contact name Dumbass <3 and typed a quick message
Do you buy flowers when going to dinner with your ex-girlfriend again???

THE IDEA OF GRAYCANA BEING SLEEPING BEAUTY IS SO FUNNY TO ME like sleeping beauty au except instead of getting cursed she just passes out drunk… when she finally comes to she just pretends to be still asleep to see if gray’ll kiss her to wake her up but he’s just like “she still smells like booze and could probably puke at any second, no way am i kissing her now” and that’s the only reason she takes so long to wake up
Miraficent: I was gonna curse the baby with a sleeping curse, but instead I’m gonna give her a drinking problem.
King Gildarts: No! She’s only a child!

Meme // Accepting
GrayCana
who is more likely to hurt the other?
Cana’s more likely to say something hurtful, but I think Gray would be more likely to do something emotionally hurtful, like walking out in the middle of an argument and leaving on a job without telling her.
who is emotionally stronger?
I think when it comes down to it Cana is, although Gray would be strong for her when it came to Gildarts stuff.
who is physically stronger?
Gray.  They’re probably pretty evenly matched when it comes to magical power, but Gray is definitely physically stronger than her.  Not that Cana is a weakling by any means, she does lift all those barrels.
who is more likely to break a bone?
Gray.  Cana is more of a long range fighter, using her cards as projectiles, whereas Gray tends to get into physical altercations while fighting someone.
who knows best what to say to upset the other?
Cana.  Although there are a few things Gray could say that would destroy her.
who is most likely to apologize first after an argument?
Gray probably, but it would take awhile.  Also depends on the subject of the argument
who treats who’s wounds more often?
Cana.  Gray’s much more likely to get injured.
who is in constant need of comfort?
I think they both have deep wounds from their past, and it would just depend on who happens to be more effected by them that day
who gets more jealous?
Cana would be more likely to voice her jealously, where as I think Gray would just kind of sit there and grumble.
who’s most likely to walk out on the other?
Gray. In terms of walking out and needing some space, not necessarily ending the relationship.
who will propose?
Gray would be the one to actually pop the question, but I think Cana might be the one to bring up the idea.
who has the most difficult parents?
Gonna have to go with Cana since her father is the only one of their parents still alive.
who initiates hand-holding when they’re out in public?
Cana more often than not, but Gray would if he was feeling protective.
who comes up for the other all the time?
The Fuck does this even mean?
who hogs the blankets?
CANA, although Gray doesn’t mind since the cold doesn’t really effect him.
who is better at cheering the other up?
Cana. She knows what to say.
who’s the one that playfully slaps the other all the time after they make silly jokes?
Gray, although it’s less playful slaps and more groaning/grumbling.
who is more streetwise?
I think they both are
who is more wise?
Cana probably when it comes down to it.
who’s the shyest?
Gray
who boasts about the other more?
Cana does
who sits on who’s lap?
Cana sits on Gray’s lap
Lokana
who is more likely to hurt the other?
Cana is more likely to say something hurtful, Loke would be more likely to do something he doesn’t realize is hurtful, but he would do his best not to try to be hurtful.
who is emotionally stronger?
Loke, although he has his moments when Cana is strong for him.  Cana has a lot of unresolved issues that effect more often.
who is physically stronger?
Loke.  He excels at hand to hand combat, and I imagine being a celestial spirit gives him an added boost.  Although Cana is competitive as fuck so she does her best to keep up with him, using other skills.
who is more likely to break a bone?
Cana, she’s merely human after all.
who knows best what to say to upset the other?
Loke knows the best thing to say to upset her, but would only very rarely actually say those things, if ever.  Cana is more likely to say upsetting things.  The one thing she knows would really upset him, saying that as a spirit he is an object/tool she would never say, even in the heat of the moment.
who is most likely to apologize first after an argument?
Loke.  He’s more level headed than Cana is, although if Cana said something really hurtful she’d apologize after she had the chance to cool down
who treats who’s wounds more often?
Loke treats Cana’s wounds.  Since he can pop back to the Celestial Spirit World to heal he doesn’t often need any treatment, where as Cana has to heal on her own.  Loke would fret over her being hurt and be overly attentive to make sure she was taking care of herself.
who is in constant need of comfort?
Cana, for main verse.  She has a lot of insecurities and unresolved emotional wounds from her past
For AU verse where Lucy died in a tragic accident Cana tries to comfort Loke as best she can while dealing with her own grief largely on her own.
who gets more jealous?
THEY BOTH DO.  They both have very flirty personalities.  Plus there’s the added bonus of getting the other jealous enough to drag them somewhere private to “mark their territory”.  Sooooo many hickies
who’s most likely to walk out on the other?
Loke would be more likely to pop back to the celestial spirit world if Cana was being irrational and he knew there was nothing he could do to calm her down.  Cana would be more likely to storm out in anger/frustration.
who will propose?
Loke, in some grand romantic gesture that leaves Cana face palming
who has the most difficult parents?
Cana by default.  Gildarts is still alive, and do celestial spirits even have parents?
who initiates hand-holding when they’re out in public?
Loke.  Cana’s more reserved when it comes to PDA, unless she’s super jealous.  Loke would be the one to hold her hand, or wrap an arm around her shoulders/waist.
who comes up for the other all the time?
The fuck does this even mean?
who hogs the blankets?
While they were partners but not actually together and ended up having to share a bed they both would.  It would turn into some kind of unconscious battle while they slept.  Leading to Loke cuddling up with her in his sleep because she’s warm and somehow managed to steal the blankets
When they actually finally realize they do have feelings for each other they go to sleep cuddled up so there’s no real blanket hogging.
who is better at cheering the other up?
LOKE.
who’s the one that playfully slaps the other all the time after they make silly jokes?
Cana doesn’t playfully slap Loke, she just gives him this un-amused look and shakes her head with a deep sigh.
who is more streetwise?
Loke.  He’s been around A LOT longer than Cana, but she’s pretty street wise herself.
who is more wise?
Loke.  Again he’s been around a lot longer than Cana, though she can be wise herself at times
who’s the shyest?
Cana.  She’s a little more shy about PDA, but not by much.
who boasts about the other more?
LOKE, he’s much more likely to boast about how great Cana is, sometimes unprompted.  However Cana would get all up in someone’s face if they were shit talking Loke, or if she perceived it as an insult.  If anyone knew he was a celestial spirit and made some comment about him being an object or tool she would try to ‘politely’ (at least polite for Cana) correct them, but if they continued she would get all kinds of nasty and tear them down verbally until they were a blubbering mess on the floor.
who sits on who’s lap?
CANA.  Especially if she’s wearing something to tease him with.  She’s a TERRIBLE tease.

Gray!
Sexuality Headcanon: Demiromantic Bisexual. Gender Headcanon: I stan all trans Gray headcanons. (But I'm also good with whatever. honestly this should just be my answer for everyone cause I seriously will go for everything. Sorry I'm indecisive.) A ship I have with said character: LOKE. LOKE. LOKE. LOKE **coughs** Okay, I do have others, I'll stop. Graylu, Graycana, Gratsu, GrayxRogue, GrayxLevy, I've dabbled with GrayxLisanna. GrayxLokexCana. I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of them right now. A BROTP I have with said character: Gray and Wendy. Gray has big bro supremacy with her. A NOTP I have with said character: y'all gonna hate my for this but Gruvia and I'm not sorry. (and I'm also not going to explain it. did that before and I'm not dealing with those anons again) A random headcanon: Take away the magic, and Gray is HEAVILY, artistically inclined. Painting. Ceramics. Sculpting. You name it. Gray loves it. Sculpting and Ceramics is his favorite. He likes to just make things with his hands and see what's in his head come to life. It's a big reason his magic works so well with him, but he doesn't need magic for it. He just enjoys it as a hobby too. General Opinion over said character: I like Gray. I think he's a misunderstood character who gets a bad rep over things not entirely his fault. And I love his interactions with most of his guild members. He can be a pretty wholesome character who is calm and collected one moment, and then absolutely feral the next. (Usually because Natsu is near.) though, i do have my reservations over the Devil Slaying Magic he learns later on, but that's neither here nor there.

Summary:
When Team Natsu return from Edolas with Lisanna, the consequences set off a series of chain reactions across the Kingdom of Fiore, disturbing the long held peace between the wizard guilds and the Magic Council.
Lucy Heartfilia is heartbroken to find that the celestial gate key of one of her oldest spirits, Aquarius, is missing, and with the help of Loke, her more-than-a-friend turned spirit, she sets off on a quest to recover it. Natsu Dragneel has had enough of waiting and joins Gajeel Redfox, Wendy Marvell, and a very, very reluctant Juvia Lockser on a mission to finally find the Dragons that left them all those years ago.
At the same time, a mysterious prophecy is circulating around the town of Magnolia, tying two of Fairy Tail's strongest members and childhood sweethearts Gray Fullbuster and Cana Alberona into a tale of bitter and bloody revenge; and an ominous presence lurks on Tenrou Island, infecting the once-holy grounds.
What will become of Fiore's fiercest protectors? What will happen to Fairy Tail?

Part 2 of my previous entry for the Home for the holidays event run by @femslashfairies and @ftmlmages
Gratsu and Lucana, mentions of past Graycana
Gray entered through the door of his house quietly hoping to slip in past his parents. He threw one more desperate glance at his phone screen, yet it still remained blank. Mentally cursing his boyfriend, he rushed towards the stairs leading to his room only to be stopped by a booming voice in the kitchen.
“Gray! Did you get our drinks?”
Cursing once again, Gray walked towards the kitchen where his parents sat at the head of the table.  Their frown at his empty hands turned into a worried look once they saw his face. He must have looked as panicked on the outside as he felt on the inside because her mother walked over speaking in a concerned tone.
“Gray? I haven’t seen you look this worried in a long time! Did something happen?” She placed a hand on chin twisting his face around as if looking for an injury.
“I’m fine mom!” He stepped away from her hands. “But uh…Gil-I mean Mr. Gildarts invited me over to his house for dinner-but I don’t have to go if you want to eat together like we usually do! I can just tell him I can’t come and-”
“Nonsense!” Silver barked slapping an arm on his son’s shoulders. “You haven’t had a play-date with little Cana in forever! You two used to be so close until you started college. What happened?”
Chucklingly nervously, Gray avoided his parents gaze. “We just grew apart is all.”
They eyed him suspiciously before Silver shrugged. “Well it happens, but that’s no excuse to keep avoiding her. Your both adults now. it would be good for both of you to reconnect.”
At that moment, Gray’s phone went off in a familiar buzz. Moving away from his parents he quickly glanced at his phone and confirmed it was the man he’s been waiting for to text him. His parents suspicious looks doubled as he stuttered out an excuse of needing to change before running off to his room.
Gray slammed the door shut behind him letting its slam echo down the halls. His fist connecting to the brown wood came next. He hated this. Hated the constant fear and anxiety and lying whenever he talked to his parents about these things. Not only did they not know about Cana, they didn’t know about anyone he dated. From high school till now, Gray never said a word about any of his partners to his parents. He’s never been in a relationship as far they know. He’s not even sure what he’s so scared of either. Before, he never told them because he was still unsure himself, then he never said anything because he didn’t think the small number of relationships he had after Cana were substantial enough to bring home. Well, until now that is.
Gray pulled out his phone and eager to read Natsu’s response. Like magic, all the anxiety and fear he was feeling at the moment vanished as his lips twitched into a smile.
Wha??
Im confused
Am I the girlfriend orrr??
Cus if I am fuck u snowflake
Chuckling Gray hit the ‘call’ phone.
“Hello?”
“No you fucking idiot.”
“Oh shut the hell up! First you didn’t text me back when we were talking about your parents dick then Erza made me help her clean her apartment! Now I’m sore and Happy’s upset cause he’s home alone again since you’re not here. Then you texted me weird shit”
That’s right, Gray had texted him before leaving to the coffee shop. Before he started driving he texted Natsu a very important question that he has yet to read the answer to. “Oh yeah…my bad. Something came up and I didn’t read your reply before texting you again.”
“Dude what happened? You sound all weird.”
Rolling his eyes at his boyfriend’s vocabulary, Gray flopped down on his bed. “You remember my ex-girlfriend I told you about? The one that lives across the street from me?”
“The one into tarot reading? Yeah.”
“I ran into her dad. He wants me to come over to dinner…tonight.”
Gray retold the story with wild hand gestures and dramatics Natsu couldn’t see but the man knew his boyfriend well enough to envision. It took about 5 minutes and various threats for Natsu to stop laughing. It was moments like these Gray wished Natsu was there so he could punch him. “Natsu your still as annoying as when we first met!” He hissed into the phone.
“Calm down ice princess! It’s just funny you got so worked up. Didn’t you say you grew up together? What’s the big deal about going to dinner?”
“Because we dated! And we broke up without ever really talking about everything.”
“She doesn’t know your bi?”
“I told you Natsu no one here does. She knows I’d been with a guy but I wasn’t sure about my sexuality back then.”
“But you asked me if I wanted to meet your parents earlier?”
“Yeah I know…” Gray closed his eyes thinking about the text he hastily sent before leaving for the coffee shop. “I meant it. I’m tired of keeping this from his parents. I want you to meet them Natsu-that is if you want? I actually haven’t read your response.”
“Of course I do!” Natsu snorted as if the question was ridiculous. The words sent warmth throughout Gray. The knowledge that Natsu wanted this too, was just as serious about them as Gray was, made him swoon every time. Not that he’d ever tell Natsu that, of course.
“But only if you go to that dinner tonight.”
“What? Why!”
“Because she’s important to you Gray. Someone doesn’t need to leave your life permanently after a breakup. You can be exes and still care for each while just being friends. Look at me and Erza! Breakups aren’t always a bad thing. Sometimes you are both good people that are better off not dating.”
Gray took time to think it over as Natsu stayed uncharacteristically quiet over the phone. Gray couldn’t lie, he did miss Cana. The two years not speaking to her had always weighed down on him. He had met a lot of wonderful people at university, but none of them knew him and his history the way she did. Every semester break he would glance over at her house and imagine walking over to say hi, but he could never get the courage to do it. Gosh he wanted to though. “You’re not bothered by this?” He asked Natsu softly.
He could tell Natsu was rolling his eyes at him. “Are you bothered by me and Erza hanging out? No, I trust you idiot.  Buy her flowers, go to dinner, and get your friend back. Text me your address tonight and we can handle you coming out to your parents together.”
It was moments like this that he was so thankful Natsu had thrown up on him during their first day of university. He didn’t know where he’d be without his pink-haired fiery tempered little punk. “I love you. I love you so much.”
“I know, I love you too. I’ll see you tomorrow Gray.”
~
Gray had been mentally crafting a script of what he was going to say since he left his house. Armed with bouquet in hand, he approached the Clive-Alberona house only to freeze once reached the stairs. There leaning against the wall was the girl whom he’d been thinking of the entire day.
She smiled at him causally as if they were 16 again and Gray was coming over as always after school. Her hair was shorter than he remembered, maybe she cut it? And she had a tattoo on her wrist of what looked like keys but that was the only difference he could see. She still had the same chestnut brown hair and leather jacket she loved wearing when it was cold out. Still wore her blue jeans over thigh-high that he once told her made ass look great.
Still wore the silver necklace he brought for her 18th birthday, the last birthday they spent together.
“Hey.” He said when he finally reached her.
“Hey stranger.” She said back. Her eyes roamed over him the same way his did her before stopping on the banquet of irises.
He quickly jerked them towards her. “These are for you!”
She blinked in surprised before taking them hesitantly. Her fingers ran across the petals as she looked at the bouquet like it was mystery she needed to solve. “Thank you?”
He nodded and walked to sit on the stairs. She followed. They spent of few minutes in quiet until she broke it. “Why flowers Gray?”
“It just seemed like the right thing to do.”
“Why? You don’t…you don’t want to get back together do you?”
“What? No! It’s not that type of gift!” Gray waved his hands around in exasperation then tried to take the flowers back when she laughed.
“Sorry I was just making sure! I didn’t think you would avoid me 2 years if you wanted to get back together anyway.”
The silence came back.
“I thought you were avoiding me?”
She shrugged looking away. “Maybe I was.”
Gray wasn’t sure what to say to that. He tried to search her face but keep her head turned away. Instead his eyes were once again pulled to her tattoo. Now that he was closer, he could see that is looked a group of tiny keys held together by a golden string. The string made a loop with what looked to be like initials inside.
“Cool tattoo.”
Her hand covered it almost instinctively. The small smile that overtook her face immediately caught his interest. It was soft, loving almost. He had only seen her look like that when they had found time to sneak off and just be them.
Oh
“Is it for someone special?”
She turned back towards him examining his face. Whatever she saw, or didn’t see, seemed to make her relax. “Maybe. Would it bother you if it did?”
“No.”
And he meant it. Even after these years, he could still read Cana and that small smile spoke a thousand words. The thought of Cana being happy in a relationship with someone else brought him nothing but joy. He felt the panic from earlier completely disappear. He was so stuck on viewing Cana as an ex that he forgot she was also his best-friend. And he wanted nothing more than for his best-friend to be happy. He now understand what Natsu meant during their call. He was going to get his best friend back.
“I’m glad Cana, I mean it.”
She smiled she gave him was a large one filled with unspoken warmth and relief. “Thanks Gray, that means a lot.” She bumped his shoulder with hers. “What about you? I don’t believe you’ve been single all this time.”
“Yeah well I uh-…” He paused taking a breath. This was far from his first time talking about his sexuality. All his friends at college knew he was bi and dating Natsu. And this wasn’t just anyone, this was Cana. The person who, once upon a time, knew him better than anyone. He smiled into her brown eyes.
“My boyfriend was the one who told me to buy you flowers.”
“Oh?” She didn’t even seem surprised. “Well tell him I said thank you. He seems like a great guy; you were never this sweet to me before.”
Its like a weight was lifted off his chest. He threw his head back in laughter. He laughed and laughed until he felt tears bristling to the corners of his eyes. “You’re such a lair Cana. You never liked this kind of stuff anyway. Does your boyfriend buy you flowers?”
“Lucy.”
“What?”
She gave him that soft smile again. “Not a boyfriend. Lucy.”
Oh
“Lucy then.” They bumped shoulders again and Gray knew they were going to be alright.
~
Lucy, it turns out, was a bubbling blonde with a big smile and a matching tattoo of keys and initials on her wrist. She was also a frequent dinner quest at the Clive-Alberona household and Gildart’s proud future-daughter-in-law (both she and Cana went red when Gildarts said that making Gray laugh so hard he didn’t mind Cana’s punch to the gut). Lucy was also sweet. She didn’t look at Gray with any hint of malice and made an effort to make sure he was included in all of their conversations. She had pulled him aside before they sat down to eat and told him she was so happy he was back in Cana’s life.
“It doesn’t bother you?” He asked her the same question he asked Natsu.
“No way! You’re good for her. She doesn’t open up easily to people and I know she missed you. I’m glad you two and can move on together as friends.”
He decided then that he really liked Lucy. “I’m glad she has you too. I can tell she really loves you.”
Throughout the dinner Cana’s gaze never strayed too far from Lucy. It was on her hands when Lucy was helping serve the food. It was on her mouth when Cana told a stupid joke just to make her laugh. It was on her lips when Lucy caught her staring and threw a small smirk Cana’s way. It was on the tattoo when Lucy laced their fingers together and let them rest on top of the dinner table. Gildarts caught his look and gave a knowing smile. It made Gray wonder if Cana told him about them, but that was a conversation for another time.
Lucy turned bright red and gave him a wide twinkling smile. “I love her too, more than anything.”
~
It was after dinner that Gray and Cana headed back outside to together in front of what used to be their treehouse. They had talked about everything in lives from their high school graduation until now. They filled the time until the sun set and the sky darkened into night with tales of their college adventures and plans for their holiday break. It wasn’t until the topic of Natsu meeting his parents that they paused.
“I could come with you, if you want.”
The words were quiet but sincere. He knew that she meant it, that if he asked she would be there at his doorstep by his and Natsu’s side as he opened up to his parents.
His smile stretched wide wondering once again how he got so lucky to still have her in his life. “I think I’d like that.”

I'm also for the lokana. though I also like graycana
Meme // AcceptingAnonymously or not, tell me who you ship my muse with.
YASSSSSSSS.  You know what’s better than Lokana and GrayCana though? OT3 Loke Cana and Gray. Most underrated BROT3/OT3 in the entire series in my opinion.  I also really just love Gray and Cana whether it’s BROTP or OTP, lokana edges out ahead, but GrayCana is a close second, and just honestly all of them hanging out together and causing mayhem just makes me so happy.  I will say though that I personally love the idea of lokana and graylu palling around together, because I feel like that BROT4 could be awesome epicness and every single one of them get along and are important to each other.

Ok but rant about GrayCana. Like in both senses if you wanna. ; ))
Meme // Accepting
Throwing under a read more, and rant is going to cover Gray x Cana as both OTP and BROTP
Gray x Cana BROTP
First off Gray x Cana Brotp is canon.  They were the first kids in their generation to make it to fairy tail, and in the Weekly Sorcerer interview they include each other in their lists of people they have the best relationship with in the guild.
They obviously care a lot about each other and I wish we could see more interactions throughout the series.  which also leads me to my favorite BROT3.  Loke x Cana x Gray.  Loke and Cana were partners, Gray and Cana say they have close relationships with each other.  Loke is Gray’s partner for the S-Class trial.  And honestly like can you imagine the shenanigans that those three would get up to.
All in all, I think Gray and Cana are very important to each other and I can see them being each other’s support and best friend.  I love interacting with Gray blogs because their BROTP is so important to me.
Gray x Cana OTP
I have to say Gray x Cana OTP vs BROTP is probably tied.  I do ship them romantically, but I also love them as bros.  No matter what verse I have Cana in she needs to have a Gray bro, if it’s not a ship.
I’m a sucker for the friends to lovers trope, and Gray x Cana has that.  Growing up as little kids and being besties that eventually fall in love gets me right in the feels.  I think that the same thing that makes them a great BROTP is also what makes them a great OTP.  They aren’t afraid to call each other out on their shit.
Again like the BROTP they obviously care about each other a whole lot and are important to each other and I think Gray and Cana ending up together would be easy and natural for them.  Probably start off as friends with benefits until they end up having other feelings for each other.
as a side note I personally headcanon that Gray was Cana’s first kiss.  I think this works for both OTP and BROTP.  They grew up together and obviously they would be experimenting with other kids their age in the guild, and given how close those two are it makes sense.
