Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
If you ever hear a grasshopper chirping in a patch of tall grass, take a closer look-- it might really be a grasshopper sparrow! These birds are unique in that they are one of only a few species of North American sparrows to have two distinct songs. One is a series of squeaky chirps that males perform in flight; the other is a buzz almost identical to that of grasshoppers! What's more, most adults prefer to spend their time hopping on the ground looking for tasty bugs rather than flying, so they are often confused for insects.

May 28, 2024 - White-crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) Requested by: @novathekeet23 Breeding in northern Canada, Alaska, and parts of the northwestern United States, these sparrows winter in much of the continental US and Mexico. They eat seeds, buds, grass, fruit, and arthropods, picking food items from the ground or plants and capturing insects in short flights. Nesting in shrubs or on the ground, females build cups from twigs, grass, pine needles, moss, bark, dry leaves, and hair. They incubate clutches of three to seven eggs alone but both parents feed the chicks.

Bachman's Sparrow Peucaea aestivalis
5/10/2022 Kissimmee Prairie Preserve, Florida
I felt very lucky to find this Bachman's sparrow singing. They are a near threatened species, and tend to be difficult to find unless singing on a perch, like this one was. They were most often found in mature pine forests, but unfortunately much of its historical habitat has been logged. Nowadays, they are found more often in open grassy habitats. State parks and wildlife preserves like this one are essential to preserving these threatened species.

Hello I hope you've been sleeping and eating well, may I request this? Whitebeard Pirates x Inosuke reader like he was the smallest and youngest among them, he gets into a lot of trouble
Inosuke was raised by boars his life and he has little to no human contact
Inosuke is influenced more and more by the Whitebeard pirates ways ways and becomes more accustomed to affection and generosity, learning to also acknowledge the strength of people besides himself and develop feelings of friendship towards the Whitebeard pirates , although he does still retain his proud nature and constant want for praise. He also begins to think more strategically when engaging in combat, using smarter tactics he has picked up from more experienced Demon Slayers and not just rushing into fights head-on without thinking, he goes mad when anyone tries to hurt his family, though despite being a troublemaker he can be shy and quiet whenever it comes to new things like Inosuke would hold Marco sleeve and watch in awe as a parade was happening
So how would the Whitebeard pirates react seeing their youngest and smallest crewmate being quiet for the first time like someone made a comment like "I wonder why would they allow a troublemaker boar into their crew?" And Inosuke started wondering that too and started being quiet as the Whitebeard pirates were behind him glaring at the bastard who made their youngest upset
Doubtful affections ( Whitebeard pirates x m!reader)
I don’t know how to feel about this one yall I really liked it at the beginning but then it was eh maybe I tried to hard using different characters I think that lowkey ruined it but nevertheless here we are I am proud that I finished dit today though! :)
Personification of Fossa was heavily inspired by @hannahbarberra162 ‘s own take on the character :)
Reader here has been replaced by Dokucha which stands for Reader in japanese

Why does it have to be boars anyway? We haven’t had sparrows in a while, and they are here by the plenty,” Ace whined as he followed after his brother.
“Cos’ the sparrows are here to control the caterpillar population, the villagers recently managed to get it under control and save their crops; boars are killin’ off their livestock,” Thatch huffed out, venturing further into the forest and away from the grasslands the village had made a home in
“We can get some good meat, and they will trade us materials if we help hunt them down; it’s a win-win for both sides.”
Ace let out a hum in response, looking further into the forest and placing an arm out to halt Thatch, gesturing for him to be quiet and lower himself on the ground.
Thatch is quick to understand the reasoning behind his actions as not far from there was a large sounder grazing on the wild vegetation. Letting out a smile as he unsheathed his knife and edged closer to them
“We goin’ to eat good tonight,” he grinned, stalking closer to the boars, knife raised and ready to strike; the opportunity ended as elated for the hunt he had failed to notice the foliage beneath his feet, cringing at the loud crinkling sound that quickly alerted the sounder.
“Ha...Howdy”
“Good going, Thatch,” Ace sarcastically called after they had managed to fend off the angry mothers that had charged at them the minute they realized someone had gotten too close to them and their piglets.
“Quit yer Hollerin; it ain’t matter how it got done. What matters is we got the meat,” he called, rolling his eyes and taking a glance at a nearby bush for a moment, his attention going back to the gathering of their hunt.
“Make yer’self useful and take care of the last one, think might be anotha piglet.”
“Aye, Aye, Captain,”” he called dismissively, igniting one of his hands as he approached the bush.
“Come here, piggy, piggy, come....here? Thatch you might want to take a look at this:”
“What is it? Oh.” The two men gawked at the sight in front of them; perhaps if they were not as worried at the fact that in front of them sat a toddler alone in the middle of the woods, they would have found it amusing at the mannerisms it showed as it let out what they guessed were small growls and charges towards them, a mask just as small as he was decorating his head.
Ace grinned gingerly. He picked up the aggressive child and boosted him up in the air for a few seconds. A laugh escaped him as the boy started giggling, his small hands trying to reach the man.
“Ya ain’t a boar, ain’tcha? What are ya doin’ all alone here?”” Thatch questioned, looking up at the giggling boy
“You don’t think he was being raised by one of the boars, do you?” Ace mulled lowering the toddler onto his hip, occasionally bouncing him
“Don’ see any other way he coulda survive alone out here” he mumbled, slipping off the boy’s mask to take a peak at his features.
“Well, it doesn’t matter cause he’s coming with us”” Ace laughed, but it was cut short as the child sank his teeth into his torso, gaining a hiss from the man.
“He’s gonna give Marco a run for his money.”” Thatch grinned, finding humor in his brother’s glowering
Thatch was definitely not wrong when he spoke those words as Marco stood in front of the child watching at his latest achievement; he had made a mistake in giving his back to a child who had been raised in the wild, and what did this cost him? A clinical bed, as the current one was now trashed, with small claw and bite marks littering it, springs and stuffing exposed to the frigid air of the room
Marco let out a sigh at the sight
“Alright, let’s set things straight; you do not destroy things,” Marco called, stopping the child from digging his teeth into the bed once again. He placed him on his lap, facing him, and held him as he struggled to get away from him and attack him.
“We can do this all day,”” he stated, looking down at the boy, who eventually stopped trying to headbutt his way out and began pointing to the bed.
“Don’t destroy my clinic,” he called sternly. He complied with his silent request and placed the child on the bed, watching him for a while to see if he would repeat her actions. He nodded when he didn’t and simply sat there staring at him. He then began assessing the child, taking all measurements, and, much to his displeasure, vaccinating him.
“There we go, you did great. Now I think it’s time you meet the rest of your brothers. Pops is waiting too.” he called, lowering the boy to the ground, his eyes softening as he gingerly took hold of his sleeve as they left the clinic, slowly walking closer to the deck, the rowdiness of the crowd getting louder and louder the closer they got
“You have improved greatly, Dokucha,” Vista applauded as he approached the small boy after he had successfully beaten his opponents under his brother’s watch.
A now older Dokucha spun around to meet his brother grinning at him
“You think so, Vista-nii?!” He called excitedly as he pulled up his mask and sheathed his wakizashi. Even though six years had already gone by since the day he had been found in that forest among boars, the young boy had kept his signature mask, having to replace it every year to fit his growing body.
“Your agility with the wakizashi has increased. Your movements are much smoother than last time, and your stance has improved as well. You no longer stumble on your feet when you must spin to meet opponents behind you,” he complimented, mirroring the child’s wide smile.
“Of course, I did a good job! I am the best after all!” he boasted as he put his hands on his hips in a proud manner.
“Remember to not underestimate your opponent regardless of their skill, or it will be your downfall on the battlefield,” He said as he placed a hand on the child’s head.
“I won’t, Vista-nii, don’t worry!”
“Now then, I must finish some training with my unit before we depart. Are you able to stock up on some of our supplies? We need new whetstones and truingstones"
“Leave it to me, Vista-nii!”
“Atta boy! I will see you shortly!” He called as he walked away
“Alright! I Saw a blacksmith right around the corner!” Dokucha noted as he made his way into the local village
“Here it is,” he remarked as he made his way inside the store, easily finding the items he was searching for and making his payment. Waving off the store owner as he made his exit, stopping as he heard the shop owner begin to talk, he turned around to see what the owner needed, only to once again be stopped as another voice spoke up.
“Who was that dear?”
“It was one of the Whitebeard pirates; he came to refill some of their smithing supplies.
He knew he was quick to jump into action; he had greatly improved this in the last years as he was less prone to suddenly lash out and act out on impulse. Under his brother’s tutelage, he now analyzed the situation and thought of a solution before his body moved. Much to Marco’s surprise and pleasure, the small boy had shown a great ability to strategize, coming up with strategies and views that never failed to impress him, much to his pleasure.
“Oh, was it one of the commanders? I heard Vista was around.”
“No, it was the boy,”
“That small child that tags along with them? I heard he was up to no good.”
Nevertheless, since he was still a child, it was only normal that many mannerisms he gained during his first two years of life still prevailed, which his brothers and father welcomed as they had grown to be a part of him. This, however, was not the case with people outside his circle; he was not deaf to the people’s words, the whispers of judgment following everywhere he went. He usually never let this get to him as he knew better than to care for stranger's words, but today was not one of those times.
“I wonder why they even keep such a boy.”
“I know, right? If anything, he would be a liability. That crew comprises such strong people, and then there’s him.”
“Maybe they felt bad for the boy, heard he was raised by boars. Can you believe that?” he said with a small laugh.
“Boars?! HA! I'm sure they keep him for entertainment. Their days at sea are very long after all.”
“Oh! That must be it I'm sure they...
Dokucha turned around, not waiting to hear the rest of the conversation, as he made his way back to the ship
“Have any of you seen Dokucha?” Namur questioned as he entered the mess hall, looking around for said boy
“He asked me for swimming lessons, and then the little rascal didn’t show up,” he grumbled, making his way to the table where the rest of the commanders sat at
“I asked him to get some materials from me, but I haven’t seen him since then,” Vista piped up
“I saw him go to his room earlier. Has he not left since then? It’s been hours since then,” Jozu noted, sharing a few worried glances with his brothers
“I will go check in on him,” Izou stated as he made his out of the mess hall
“Dokucha, are you there?” Izou called as he knocked on the door to his room, frowning as he received no response
‘He’s a light sleeper, so there’s no way he didn’t hear my knocking,’ he thought as he took a bobby pin out of his hair and easily unlocked the door, his frown deepening as his eyes fell on the lump on the bed.
“Dokucha?” He called sitting down on the bed
“The door was closed for a reason, Izou-nii,” the child grumbled, his voice muffled by the bed sheets. Despite this, the roughness and scratchiness of the voice was not lost to Izou as he swiftly removed the covers from the boy and pulled him closer to him.
“I have told you that it is unbecoming to not look as someone when you speak,” he called, tightening his hold as Dokucha tried pushing him away.
“Just leave Izou-nii,” he growled.
“I will not leave until you tell me what has had you acting this way.”
“Why do you even care? I’m just a form of entertainment for you guys, so you don’t have to pretend anymore, so...just leave me alone!” he cried.
Shocked by his words, Izou is quick to release him, watching as he broke down in front of him.
“Who told you this?”
“So it’s true!” he wailed, his cries growing louder as he turned away until a delicate hand made his place under his chin and softly turned it back.
“Dokucha. I do not know where you have heard of this, but know that it could not be farther from the truth,” he softly spoke as he lifted his face.
“We care for you deeply; we were all so happy the day Ace and Thatch brought you aboard. Trust me, living in a ship surrounded by such barbarians can become tiring after a while.” He started gaining a small giggle from the child at his words
“But then there was you; you were the most delicate yet wildest thing I had seen,” he voiced with a small smile.
“It was quite a sight, having a toddler run around amock and causing experienced warriors to lose their minds over such a small thing,” he recalled with a smile.
“It’s concerning how quickly you became the most precious treasure that any of us have found. And that is why I would like to know how you ever thought you were simply a means for entertainment,” he finished, looking down at Dokucha.
The child, comforted by the words, threw himself into Izou's arms, sobs racking his small body.
“Was it because of something we said or did? Despite not being as uncivilized as some of them, I understand some of us can be a lot,” he spoke as he hugged the boy closer to him, rubbing his back to soothe his cries.
“No, it wasn’t you guys.”
“Then?”
Encouraged by his words, Dokusha told him of what he had heard in the shop earlier. After a while, his brother smiled at him and encouraged him to relax for a while as he and the others 'handled it.’
“Say Fossa-nii, why did everyone leave?” Dokucha wondered as he looked up at the stars that filled the sky
“They had something that needed ta be handled,” he huffed out as he lay beside the boy.
“What is it?”
“What with the damn questions?! Just shut up n’ go to sleep,” the man growled, only getting a small snicker in response.
“I love you, Fossa-nii!” he exclaimed, throwing himself towards said man, hugging him tightly.
“Tch, yer lucky m' in a good mood,” he grunted out.
"Hey, hey, did you sneak any out today?" the child whispered, looking up at him
"Ya better not tell that idiot about this," he grumbled as he pulled out a small pastry from his pocket, handing it to the boy.
"I won't! Cause then I won't get any treats after hours!" he exclaimed, munching on the pastry and ignoring the snickers escaping his brother.
Ahhhh im tired yall but I finally finished it. What are we thinking?

BOTD: Java Sparrow
Photo: J. N. Stuart
"A small, plump finch with a very thick pink bill. The black head and white cheek patch are distinctive. Juveniles have a similar color pattern but are grayer. Social; forages in flocks and roosts communally. Forages in rice fields, grasslands, meadows, and urban and suburban areas (in introduced range). Call consists of one or more musical chirps. Native to the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali, where now quite rare. Introduced widely across the globe including India, Philippines, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the Hawaiian Islands."

Excerpt from this story from Inside Climate News:
On a recent morning, 10 Florida grasshopper sparrows, tiny brown-speckled birds that are the most endangered on the continent, took their first scampers and flaps on the state’s central prairie.
It happened so fast it was hard to distinguish which of the captive-raised sparrows was the 1,000th released on this expanse of grasslands not far from Walt Disney World, the only place on Earth where the birds are found in their natural habitat.
Dozens of conservationists, gathered some distance away to avoid spooking the skittish sparrows, celebrated the milestone in an unprecedented recovery program that in only a few years has doubled the bird’s wild population, from a mere 80 five years ago to some 200 today.
By the time the land-dwelling sparrows emerged from the two large enclosures and disappeared onto the prairie, the observers couldn’t help but cheer. The moment marked the culmination of years of deliberation, doubt and diligence among those engaged in the bird’s fate, said Paul Gray, science coordinator for the Everglades Restoration Program at Audubon Florida.
“It’s just a lot of hard work by a whole lot of people,” said Gray, who has worked on the Florida grasshopper sparrow for about 30 years and was present for the 1,000th release in July. “I can’t describe how hard it was emotionally for everyone involved in this because every step of the way, we had to do something that nobody had done before.”

The biggest high-flying bird. Fauna in GS is fictional though, it's hard to say. Coastians could rock freakish albatrosses and scoff at grasslanders' little sparrows and itty bitty tits.

Clanmew warrior cats oc name translation time again? Yes.
Coalfrost- Kitchiki (hot coal-frost)
Dewlight- Pesooane (dew-ray of light). I chose ane over shayu because Dewlight was named for being optimistic and outgoing, kind of like a ray of sunshine... or a ray of light!
Eveningcloud- Piarrwifha (evening-thin cloud). Went for thin cloud over fat cloud because Eveningcloud is chill but not in a lazy way, more in a they kinda vaguely don't care way.
Foxcloud- Aowaohai (fox-fat cloud). Now THIS is a fat cloud cat. Chill but because they're lazy lol.
Falconscreech- Yassganyaolr (raptor-yowling) No word for falcon, so just used raptor! For screech, I was torn between screaming and yowling, but I chose yowling since it gives more of the this cat is really loud vibes.
Fireflydawn- Ahaigioochawhaf (glow-bug-dawn). In the absence of a word for firefly, i figured combining glow and bug would do.
Heatherbounce- Ssnibpipip (heather-bouncing). I picked the present tense mostly because she is always in action haha.
Maplestream- Hwooqshush (field maple-stream). Making use of the new word for maple here!
Moorstride- Kiyyrpaohao (grass-travelling). Struggled to translate this one, but it's where i ended up!
Softsnap- Wuffgnamna (soft fur-biting). Chose bite over snap just because in the absence of the alliteration, bite has more, well, bite to it.
Sparrowchirp- Qeeyanaya (sparrow-singing). No word for chirp, so I figured singing would do well enough.
Spiderbite- Skegnamnag (cobspider-bit)
Weaselsight- Byrrirpipo (weasel-sight)
Hydrangeadawn- Meyfuhawhaf (violet-dawn). No word for Hydrangea so I picked an approximation.
Pinefoot- Nyyp'pwyyar (pine needle-foot)
Songspeckle- Errarriwoowoo (song thrush-spotting). Chose the bird over song itself because I think that's fun.
Swanstep- Hchomssappap (swan-walked)
Tideshred- Saossassrapssen (current-shredded). No word for tide, figured current was the closest thing.
First submission to use the new Maple word award! I appreciate the use of thin-cloud for Eveningcloud, fat-cloud is the popular choice so it's nice to see the underdog get love lmao
Words for you;
Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) = Pree
Eurasian Hobby (Falco subbuteo) = Yowpiu
Moor = Hwayao NOT JUST A GRASSLAND. This is the equivalent of "Forest" to "Woods." When Clan cats say "moorland" they are referring to an entire biome, encompassing heaths, grasslands, tors, and dales.
Heath = Afwa The "woods" to moorland "forest." This is a particular parcel of the moorland, an area with acidic soil that needs to be managed through fire or grazing, lest it success into sparse woodland.
Chirp/Note/Beat (Word is used interchangeably) = Bwi The same Clanmew terms for various songs are used for birdsongs. A Bwi is a single beat of the larger song of a bird, or just one word in a speech. When combined with another Bwi, you have a Tune. Put Tunes together and you have a song.
Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) = Arke Clan cats don't have hydrangeas, so I went and found a plant that looks a lot like them! Hawthorns have fluffy clusters of flowers and grow with big, strong, thorned bushes. Feel free to translate as 'haw' or 'hydrangea,' however you'd like. If you want to keep the 'exotic' feel of a domestic plant, feel free to play around with the words for domestic rose, or fuschia.

Vesper Sparrow - (Pooecetes gramineus)
Rio Grande Nature Center (State Park) - Fall 2023
A sparrow associated with short-grass grasslands, typically running on the ground between tufts of vegetation. In the field, their stellar eye-ring and this ground-based behavior are typically how I tell them apart from other sparrows in the area. They seem to prefer to forage on their own or in small groups, rather than the close-knit foraging pattern of Chipping Sparrows.
All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's BBL. Permission to share these images was given by Rio Grande Bird Research, Inc. (Instagram: @ birdbanderdude_nm)
#bird banding#vesper sparrow#for some reason they're more heavily associated with the Midwest#but they breed all across the upper portion of the US#basically just wintering in the southern states

October 18, 2024 - Black-eared Sparrow-Lark or Black-eared Finch Lark (Eremopterix australis) Found in parts of Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, these larks live in shrublands and grasslands. They mostly eat grass seeds, along with some other plant foods, as well as insects, foraging on the ground, usually in flocks. Breeding after rains, males perform display flights and females build shallow scrape nests at the bases of bushes from sticks, grass leaves and bristles, twigs, and spiderwebs. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks. Parents may attempt to lure predators away from the nest by fluttering on the ground as if they are injured.

"The first-ever comprehensive assessment of net population changes in the U.S. and Canada reveals across-the-board declines that scientists call “staggering.” All told, the North American bird population is down by 2.9 billion breeding adults, with devastating losses among birds in every biome. Forests alone have lost 1 billion birds. Grassland bird populations collectively have declined by 53%, or another 720 million birds.
Forests alone have lost 1 billion birds. Grassland bird populations collectively have declined by 53%, or another 720 million birds.
The losses include favorite species seen at bird feeders, such as Dark-eyed Juncos (or “snowbirds,” down by 168 million) and sweet-singing White-throated Sparrows (down by 93 million). Eastern and Western Meadowlarks are down by a combined 139 million individuals. Even the beloved Red-winged Blackbird—a common sight in virtually every marsh and wet roadside across the continent—has declined by 92 million birds."

The reason being that they grow continuously & they frequently outgrow their tusk caps. This results in the tusks loosening & falling out. Because of this, Erepinnipediculture suddenly becomes a major source of trade revolving around ivory production.

- Forest Ostrich = Great Sky Island & South Lanayru Sky.
Cucco = Domestic. Greater Hyrule.
Animals that Should Be in the Wild Series:
Faron Dusk Monkeys (Technically TP) = Faron & Ordona. - Inspired by the Monkeys from Twilight Princess, but also Dusky Titi Monkeys. I really like those!
Elk (BotW: Second Wind Mod) = Central Hyrule.
Marriage Doves = Necluda & East Faron Coast. These lovely white birds with pink, heart-shaped beaks are born with only one wing each (males a right wing & females a left wing) & mate for life. It's only when they find their mate, always of the opposite wing, that the pair are finally able to fly. - Inspired by Jian Birds.
Mountain Crows (MC & MM) = The little fuckers that steal your rupees. Even though they are commonly depicted as being the familiars of evil witches, this is actually due to how they are associated with death. In reality, most animals refuse to associate with users of black magic due to its corruptive nature. In fact, Corvids tend to despise those who use black magic & will attack viciously & in groups. Crows typically only attack Links for their Rupees due to how shiny they are.
Ravens = Actually much more chill than Crows & not as likely to attack people for their shinies. If one were to compare Crows with muggers, then Ravens are more akin to pickpockets. Even though they are commonly depicted as being the familiars of evil witches, this is actually due to how they are associated with death. In reality, most animals are much more likely to attack users of black magic due to its corruptive nature. In fact, Corvids tend to despise those who use black magic & will attack viciously & in groups. Ravens generally don't physically attack people unless they've done something to specifically legitimately piss them off such as use black magic. Oddly slow to true anger & will mostly instead choose to play petty pranks on people who've angered them. Ravens typically actually have very little issue with Links unless they do something to stir their ire. They'll still steal from Link's, but they won't attack them.
Crown-Crested Swans = A type of swan that bears a crest of golden feathers upon its head that greatly resembles a crown from the side. The feathers of its wings & tail also turn sky blue at the tips. Can be either domestic or wild. The Royal Family used to raise them in the Castle Gardens. They mostly live in Central Hyrule, but you can still find a handful in Necluda & Lanayru. Though, you really only see wild ones out that far & it's best to just leave them be. Can be aggressive fuckers despite how pretty they are.
Loftwings (SS) = Domestic. Sky Islands. - Resembles a shoebill.
Remlits (SS) = Domestic. Sky Islands. The unevolved cousin to the Zonai.
Shroom-Snout Swine = Domestic. Greater Hyrule. Used to hunt for mushrooms, especially buried Hearty Truffles & Big Hearty Truffles. - Technically, you could call it a reference to the Pig Mask from MM.
Mystathi Pig = () These pigs are descended from the ancient War Boars of the Desert Gerudo. In order to survive the cold, they've developed a thick coat of curly hair resembling that of a sheep. Somehow, they have also managed to retain the rather threatening tusks from their larger, more battle-hardened ancestors. And though not quite as talented of a fungus-sniffer as their less hairy distant cousins, they remain very skilled at it. - Inspired by the Mangalitza Pig.
Bighorn Sheep = Domestic. Gerudo Region, both desert & highlands. Used for their milk & their wool which is good for both desert & snowy mountain climates depending on whether the wool is summer weight or winter weight. Highland-dwelling Bighorn Sheep have noticeably thicker coats.
War Boars (TP) = Gerudo Desert. These giant boars used to be used as war mounts by the Gerudo. Not nearly as quick as their horses, but definitely more powerful & durable. Not to mention dangerous with those tusks.
Dunerunner Ostriches = Gerudo Desert. Can be domesticated, but takes skill to do so. Faster on the sand than War Boars or Sand Seals & some can be even faster than horses, but they are also far more difficult to tame & ride than horses. They're also not suitable for Gerudo mounts & are thus more likely to be raised for their eggs. However, Hylians are the perfect size to ride one.
Rainbow Peacocks = Gerudo Oases, Gerudo Town, & Faron Jungle. Also called Oasis Peacocks.
Dusttail Foxes = Gerudo Desert. - Inspired by Fennec Foxes.
Lanayru Serpents = The waters of Lanayru & Necluda.
- Sand Vipers = Gerudo Desert. Very poisonous.
- Gerudo Cobras = Gerudo Desert. Very poisonous. It's hood is used as the symbol representative of the Gerudo as a whole.
- Royal Cobras = Gerudo Desert. An extremely poisonous snake. Heavily associated with Gerudo Royalty. The pattern on the back of the hood is different depending on whether it is male or female. Gerudo Kings by blood get the mark on the hood of male Royal Cobras tattooed onto their body. The same is said of Gerudo Queens by birth getting a tattoo of the female Royal Cobra's hood. Male Royal Cobras are referred to as kings & the females as queens.
Cobra Sharks = Lives in the Gerudo Desert, in flowing sand. Though, they're tenacious & vindictive motherhubbards, & if they really have it out for you, they'll jump onto the more solid sand & are even able to follow their prey quite a while before eventually losing traction. At that point, they are basically 'dead in the water' & will die anyway, so might as well make their deaths worth something. They have a type of enzyme in their gums that facilitates infection in those they bite in a similar way to venom, thus earning them their name. Due to living in sand, they have no eyes & instead, navigate mainly by scent & sound. Unlike most sandfish, this one needs to be lured to the surface & killed manually, best to use spears. The Gerudo refer to them as Kōbra Samàqen. - Resembles a Zebra Shark if they had stripes instead of spots. Note: Finning is illegal even in Hyrule & the law is enforced strictly. Also, please note that Shark Fin doesn't actually have any flavor. The reason its fins are used is so that no part of the shark is wasted. However, Shark Meat is delicious. Each shark gives 4-8 Shark Fins, 3-5 Shark Meat, 1-3 Shark Bones, & between 5 & as many as 10 Shark Teeth, but higher numbers have decreasing potentiality.
Roc = A massive-ass, fuck-off desert bird so large that its wings block out the sun & a beat from them causes gale force sand tornadoes. Its feathers are imbued with wind magic & were once used to make Roc Capes, which allowed the wearer to jump high, long distances, & even glide. Much like the Sīmurgh, can pick up & carry off full-grown Molduga. This makes it the natural predator of said Molduga. Acts as a sort of secret boss despite not being monsters. Though, they do tend to cause issues for people by taking livestock.
Gerudàn Horses (OoT, BotW, & TotK) = Basically the Giant Horse, but more than one & these ones are specifically bred & raised by the Gerudo, which they use as calvary & in horseback archery. The only horses that can travel the desert as they are specifically trained to do so. The Gerudo also know how to forge special horseshoes that helps them distribute their weight, thus allowing them to travel more quickly over the sand. The only horses that can carry a full-grown Gerudo.
Goponga Alligator = Lanayru, mostly around the Lanayru Swamplands & Lanayru Great Spring areas.
- Faron Crocodile = Faron Jungle only.
Oxen Sharks = The Oxen Shark swims all along the Faron-Necludic Coast. Their population is strictly regulated. As such, they are sustainable enough to be eaten if a person only catches one. Faron Coastal residents will often catch one or two & have little parties where the featured ingredient is shark as they use as much of the animal as possible. The Sheikah refer to Oxen Sharks as Oushizame (牡牛ザメ, direct translation). Residents of Lurelin refer to them as Kauo Niuhi. - Note: Finning is illegal even in Hyrule & the law is enforced strictly.
Ordon Goats (TP) = Both Wild & Domestic. Ordona & seasonally Gerudo. Unique in that they're much larger than other goats with gray-ish blue fur & horns that form a complete circle or ovoid atop their heads. So large, in fact, that the average Hylian can ride a fully-grown one. Their milk has a distinct taste that separates it from that of other goats. While they can also be found in the Gerudo Region during certain seasons, they mostly dwell in Ordona as that is where they are native. As such, the Gerudo know how to care for them, but not nearly to the same degree as Ordonians. - The Faron Grasslands being renamed Ordona here.
Flamingos = Faron, especially Lurelin.
Cats (TP & MC) = Domestic. Greater Hyrule. Why are there no cats?? Maybe a few of different kinds like Tabbies, Oranges, Calicos.
- Mountain Cats = Wild & dangerous. Lives on forested mountains all over Hyrule, including Central Hyrule, Necluda, Lanayru, & Akkala. - A mix of Bobcats & Mountain Lions.
- Mountain Tigers = Wild & dangerous. Lives in the Hebra Mountains. - Like a mix between a Mountain Lion & a White Bengal Tiger.
- Jungle Tigers = Wild & extremely dangerous. Ferocious. Lives in the Faron Jungle & will occasionally wander into the Faron East Coast. Caution: Extremely dangerous because water won't stop them as they actually quite enjoy swimming. One of the most dangerous predators in Hyrule that isn't a monster. Superseded by Lynels. At least, one on one. The 2 creatures have only been noted to meet once or twice as most Lynels prefer open areas while Jungle Tigers prefer densely wooded areas. The one known time they have been recorded to meet, it was a Red Lynel who had trespassed in the Faron East Coast. While the Lynel managed to fight off the solo Jungle Tiger, it later came back with its pride & they managed to kill the Lynel by luring it into uneven terrain & sneak attacking it before piling on top of him, though not without losing a few. It has thus been concluded that while not as dangerous alone as even a Red Lynel on their own, they have the advantage of being more cooperative than Lynels, who are solitary by nature. - Like a larger Bengal Tiger, but with saberteeth.
- Sand Cats = Domestic. Lives in the Gerudo Desert. Very, very small, but very, very deadly if provoked. And, are known for possessing a 90% kill success rate. Fantastic hunters & trackers. And extremely sassy. A bit smaller than the typical housecat. May share a common ancestor with Remlits. - Inspired by IRL Sand Cats & Black-Footed Cats, but spotted like cheetahs instead of striped & possessing long claws.
- Snow Cats = Domestic. Lives in the Gerudo Highlands. Very, very small, but very, very deadly if provoked. And known for having a 60% kill success rate. Fantastic hunters & trackers. And extremely sassy. Used to be Sand Cats until they migrated with their mistresses to live in the Highlands. May share a common ancestor with Remlits. - Inspired by Sand Cats, Black-Footed Cats, Snow Leopards, & Maine Coons. The coloration & patterning of Snow Leopards, the long, fluffy fur of Maine Coons, & the broad ears & size of Sand Cats. Also having very long claws.
- Dune Leopards = The wild cousin of the Sand Cat. From which the Sand Cats were domesticated from. - Imagine a spotted Sand Cat about the size of a Bobcat.
Highland Yaks = Domestic. Gerudo Highlands. Used for yak wool & yak milk.
Meadow Rabbits = Hyrule Field.
- Snowdrift Rabbits = Hebra & the Gerudo Highlands.
- Wasteland Hare = Gerudo Desert, Gerudo Canyon, & the Ordona Grasslands.
- Jackalope = Gerudo Desert, Gerudo Canyon, & the Ordona Grasslands. An extremely rare hare with antlers. Often mistaken for Blupees at night, so it isn't unusual to shoot them by accident only for the hunter to feel somewhat guilty when instead of some quick change, he finds the corpse of an antlered hare. It's considered a mixed bag of sorts as the feet are considered good luck, but the antlers are bad luck. As a result, people tend to view them as fae of sorts. Some people speculate that Jackalopes are actually male Wasteland Hares as no one has really seemed to catch a male hare before.
Forest Owls = Wooded areas. Nocturnal.
- Snow Owls = Wooded areas in Hebra. Nocturnal. Often mistaken for ghosts due to how silently they can fly, their ghostly white color, the tapetum lucidum in their eyes, & the fact that they're only seen at night.
Tabantha Oxen = Domestic. Tabantha Tundra. Provides Fresh Milk.
Lon Lon Cows (OoT & MC technically) = A bovine raised exclusively at Lon Lon Ranch. They have a mostly cream-colored coat, speckled sparingly with small black & peachy pink-colored splotches (more pink splotches than black ones) & even more sparingly with larger tan splotches. They also tend to have star-shaped patterns on their foreheads. - Inspired by Star Cows & Marbled Cows from A Wonderful Life.
Big-Horned Rhinoceros = Hebra Mountains & Gerudo Highlands. The fuck did they go???
Dolphins = Because cool. Not rapists of the sea here. Faron & Necluda Seas.
Unicorns = Because why not? Old forests of Greater Hyrule. Its horn gives it access to purifying & healing magic.
Pegasi = Because Pegasus Boots but no pegasi?? Sky Islands.
Hippocampi = Because need more aquatic animals. Faron & Necluda Seas.
- Horned Hippocampi = Has a narwhal-like horn on its forehead that it uses to channel magic & control the currents around it.
- Finned Hippocampi = Has back fins similar to that of a flying fish, allowing it to jump out of the water & glide a short distance.
Phoenix = Very Rare. Sky Islands & Eldin Region. Can be killed, but it's considered bad luck. When killed it bursts into flames & crumbles into ash before leaving behind a few drops. It's implied that the Pheonix isn't actually dead, rather restarting its life cycle. However, being forced to repeat said cycle when they don't need to is actually very frustrating & inconvenient, not to mention rude. In the beginning, the Phoenixes are corrupted by evil & are instead called Furnixes. After purifying their queen & helping her with a purifying ritual, the Phoenixes return to their original states & gift Link with rare drops whenever they see him. Or in the case of Link being in battle at the time, they will come to his aid.
- Phoenix Queen = The benevolent monarch of the Phoenixes. Very large & resembles the Fenghuang, having peacock-like traits. When Link meets her, she is known as the Furnix Queen & acts as a boss, however upon defeating her (specifically with the Master Sword, a Light Arrow, or some form of Light or Twilight Magic), she bursts into flames & her ashes fall upon the ground. If Link later returns to the place where he defeated her & the thing that dealt the final blow was either the Master Sword or some form of Light or Twilight Magic, then in the place of the Furnix Queen will be the Phoenix Queen, who will thank Link graciously for purifying her. She will then request that he aid her in a ritual that will purify all her kin. After which, all the Furnixes will change to Phoenixes.

Gibdo = Not actually a Gibdo. Merely a Gerudo corpse puppeted by Necromorths (the eggs of a Queen Necromothula) or a Necropillar. - New Classification: Necromorth Host.
- Moth Gibdo = Not a true Gibdo. Rather the corpse of a Gerudo that is being piloted by a Necromothula. - New Classification: Necromothula Host.
- Queen Gibdo = Not a true Gibdo. In actuality, she is the result of an Everlost Silkworm ingesting a Puffstool that had been the result of a corrupted Orphiocordyceps sinensis. As she was digesting it, she proceeded to go through chrysilization. It was only upon going inside that the digestion was completed & the fusion went underway. Once metamorphosis was complete, she came out as what we see in the game. - New Classification: Queen Necromothula.

Monsters that Should Be in the Wild Series:
Puffstool (MC) = Microscopic mushroom enemies. Typically impervious to swordstrikes. However, using wind attacks to absolve them of their spores will render them stunned & vulnerable to attack.
- Corpsepillar Puffstool = A Ophiocordyceps sinensis (a.k.a. Zombiepillar Mushroom) that's been corrupted & turned into a monster. - My hc. I love the idea of this one!
Vulpos (MC Keaton) = Dashes at you & steals your shit. They may, in fact, be corrupted MM Keaton. Defeating them with Light/Twilight magic or weapons returns them to their natural state of Keatons, who may reward you for the favor.
Wolfos (OoT Wolfos with TP graphics) = Wolves corrupted by evil. Defeating them with Light/Twilight magic or weapons returns them to their natural state.
Wohsu (AoL) = Just wolf men.
Dark Keese (SS) = Undead Keese. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them.
Cursed Bokoblin (SS) = Undead Bokoblin. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them.
Metal Chuchu (MC) = Could make boomerangs viable.
- Rock Chuchu = Need a hammer to smash their helmets.
Stalmaster =
Elemental Hinoxes (HW: AoC) =
- Silver Hinox (BotW: Relics of the Past Mod) =
- Hinox King (BotW: Second Wind Mod) =
Elemental Lynels (HW: AoC) = Suddenly a thousand times scarier.
- Lunar Lynel (BotW: Second Wind Mod) = It's attacks do Twilight Damage.
Zola = Corrupted Zora. Just to help fill up the ocean. Otherwise, there's only Blue Lizalfos & Water Octoroks. Defeating them with Light/Twilight magic or weapons returns them to their natural state of being Zora.
Geozards = Just straight up evil Zora. Just to help fill up the ocean. Otherwise, there's only Blue Lizalfos & Water Octoroks. Can't be purified, because they are evil via their own decisions.
Deku Babas (TP & SS) =
- Manhandla = When a Deku bulb has been corrupted & allowed to grow to be too large. 1 mouth was irritating enough, so new try 4 that all spit fire!
Skulltulas (OoT & TP) = I hated them growing up.
Ropes (MC) = Snake monsters.
- Gold Ropes (MC) = Gold snake monsters. Much more durable!
Darknuts = A monster in armor. Just another challenging enemy to fight. Something with good ai & capable of strategy.
Silver Darknuts (MC) =
- Iron Knuckles = Acts as another challenging enemy to fight. Something with good ai. They are actually said to be Gerudo who have either been corrupted by dark magic or brainwashed or are just loyal to Ganondorf. As such, there is a moral weight behind fighting them. Those that are corrupted, when defeated by the Master Sword or some form of Light or Twilight magic, will then be released from their corruption. If not, then when Link returns to the area, he will find a ghost who will thank him for releasing her from her imprisonment even if it meant killing her. However, this will end up barring Link from any quests that he might've gotten from her had he purified her instead.
Ampilus (SS) = Inhabits the desert to the southwest of Hyrule. They are able to internally generate electricity. Their shells are able to disperse weight very well, which allows them to traverse quicksand without worry. As a result, desert inhabitants use their shells to make armor. They live to be very old.
Fokka =
Fotail =
Geldarm =
Dodongo =
Redeads (OoT & TP) = The screaming bastards that grab you. Different from Gibdos. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them. Killing them with one releases the spirit trapped inside, leaving behind a Poe Soul.
ReDead Knight =
Ghini (MC) = A one-eyed, ghostly monster.
Poes (old game enemies) = It would've been interesting to actually have to fight some of the Poes rather than just pick them up like items. Maybe the lore could be that if a Poe Soul (the non-combative Poes in the canon Wild games) gathers too much negativity (On'nen) it rises to the surface & creates pseudo-flesh & it attacks you. Only hurt by Light/Twilight weapons such as Dazzlefruit, Diamonds, & Light Dragon Parts, the Master Sword, or by specially-forged Sheikah weaponry. When defeated, they drop a Poe Soul & Dark Clumps insinuating that the Dark Clumps are pieces of the pseudo-flesh that they made. However, much like in OoT & MM, there are certain Poes that can instead be talked down or soothed.
- Imp Poes (TP) = These ones are very specifically the Imp Poes from Twilight Princess. These Poes very specifically can't be soothed or reasoned with the way certain ordinary Poes can.
- Big Poes = A sort of Poe leader. Still functions much like an ordinary Poe, but much larger & much stronger.
- Icy Big Poe =
Furnix (SS) = A phoenix corrupted by evil. Once a benevolent creature, now an enemy. Can be purified by defeating it with Light/Twilight magic.
- Queen Furnix = Corrupted queen of the phoenixes. Must be vanquished by weapons wielding sacred or Light/Twilight magic or she will simply come back next Blood Moon.
Tektites (MC, OoT, & TP) = Jumpy fuckers.
Morths = Spiky guys with a singular eyeball. - Hc: They're Mothula eggs.
- Madderpillar (MC) = My hc? Child-staged Morths.
- Mothula (WW) = Giant moth monsters.
Necromorths (technically TotK) = The Morths of a Queen Necromothula. Parasitic in nature & are unable to survive without a host. - My hc.
- Necropillar (technically TotK) = When an Everlost Silkworm ingests a Corpsepillar Puffstool. Parasitic in nature & are unable to survive without a host. - My hc.
- Necromothula (technically TotK) = When a Necropillar has finished its metamorphosis process. Parasitic in nature & are unable to survive without a host. - My hc.
Bullbos (TP) = As mounts for Moblins & Boss Bokoblins. Basically, War Boars corrupted by evil to become monsters. Defeating them with Light/Twilight magic or weapons returns them to their natural state.
Kargarocs (TP & WW) = There really aren't that many sky enemies.
Helmaroc (WW) = A corrupted Roc.
Takkuri (MC & MM) = The little fuckers that steal your rupees. Corrupted crows & ravens.
Water Lizalfos = Just a Blue Lizalfos with a Water Element.
- Dark Lizalfos = Just Black Lizalfos with a Shadow Element.
- Twilit Lizalfos = Just a Silver Lizalfos with a Twilight Element.
- Aeralfos (HW) = Flying Lizalfos.
- Fiery Aeralfos (HW) = Flying Lizalfos, but also Death From Above.
- Dinolfos =
Peahats & Seahats = Another use for fan shields or korok fronds.
Bubbles (WW & BotW) = Maybe when you beat a Stal enemy, their skull has a chance to become a Bubble? It'd be interesting if there were different kinds based on the Stal enemy it came from & if the stronger Stal had stronger Bubbles. Like the Malice Skulls from BotW. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them.
Wall Master & Floor Master = Not as strong as the Gloom Hands, but can be terrifying in the right setting. Especially if you don't see their shadow coming. Light/Twilight weaponry or magic is especially effective against them.
Platinum Enemies = Because a True Hero Mode would be cool.
Obsidian Talus (CoH & TotK: MM) =
Gleerok (MC) = A Gleeok that lives in lava. Has a shell of volcanic rock on its back.
- Demon King Gleeok (TotK: MM) =
Golden King Frox (TotK: MM) =
Other:
Ghosts = Not necessarily plot important ghosts either. Just ghosts of random people. Do a bit of old school stuff where you gotta help them be ready to move on. Maybe give Link an instrument so he can learn to play the Song of Healing.
Keatons (MM) = The Gentle Jesters & guardian spirits of the Sheikah. Known for asking riddles.
Minish (MC) = Crafty little helper elves of Hyrule. Can only be seen by children.
Yeti (TP) = They resemble Yeto & Yeta, but are an entire race of people. Isolationists that generally live in the deep mountains of Hebra. Generally quite friendly & hardy as a people, but tend to keep to themselves.
Twili (TP) = The descendants of a Sheikah faction that splintered off from the main tribe in an attempt to take over Hyrule much like the Yiga. However, unlike the Yiga, the Twili have become mostly peaceful since their banishment to the Twilight.
Mogmas (SS) = They were such fun characters. I kinda wish there'd been some female & kid Mogmas too. They'd have been neat as residents of the Depths with close ties to the Gorons. Like, they come across as being Italian mafia adjacent, but only in so much as the accent, the attitude, & family-oriented orginization. Sort of a "it takes a village" & "we take care of our own" type of mentality. Not in any way actually mafia though. They also love treasure & will risk life & limb for it, yet they quite easily give those same treasures away to those they consider friends. In this way, though they appear cowardly & greedy on the surface, they are actually brave & generous. It seems to be a cultural trait to give gifts, practically a love language.
Kikwi (SS) = Quite a shy, skittish race of people, but overall friendly & helpful.
Deku Scrubs (MM & MC) = A race of bush people. They are quite business-minded but tend to get a bit too enthusiastic regarding possible customers.
Swamp Zora (EoW) = I like the idea of a split in the Zora. The Zora as allies have always been refined & elegant. It's interesting to see a possible version of them that isn't as such. In a way, I've sort of begun seeing the River Zora that we know as analogous to French & these new Zora as Louisianan. So, I think of them as swamp-dwellers. Possibly having ties with the Deku Scrubs.

BOTD: Botteri's Sparrow
Photo: Alan Schmierer
"Two kinds of plain, long-tailed sparrows live side by side in southwestern grasslands. While Cassin's is fairly widespread, Botteri's Sparrow is found only in a few areas of southern Texas and Arizona. Although it will perch up on a shrub or an ocotillo stalk to sing its series of accelerating chip notes, Botteri's Sparrow is quite secretive at other times, hiding in dense grass."

You don't have to be a "birder" to appreciate birds. You can sit in your yard or local park and listen to them and watch them, or take a hike along the coast or in the mountains or prairies or grasslands near you and do your listening and watching. I'm not a "birder," and I don't fit the stereotypical image of a "birder" with binoculars and notepads (or smart phone, iPad, etc.). I fell into my interest in birds by doing the listening and watching in our yard, then learning how to feed them (along with the squirrels), then reading about them, then purchasing a few books to help me identify them and learning about them. I also became intensely interested when I read the dire stories about the decline in birds, particularly the decline in bird numbers in North America by 2.9 billion birds since 1970.
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is one of the global leaders in bird research. If you click/tap on the photo above, you'll be taken to the Cornell Lab's 2024 Annual Report. You'll learn about birds and what Cornell is doing to advance our scientific knowledge and understanding, so that we can better protect them and stop the decline. The members of our family have eBird, Cornell's internet portal, on our devices so we can learn as we go, and we annually participate in the Feeder Watch program so we can contribute facts to the academic study of birds. It's fun, and a great diversion from the uglies of the world to spend 30+ minutes doing the bird listening and watching daily or just a few days a week.
We also invested in a feeder with an wi-fi enabled camera so we can watch and photograph the birds that visit. Today's visitors include a cardinal, a downy woodpecker, house finch, nuthatch and red-bellied woodpecker, among others, including sparrows.

Unfortunately, we also attract squirrels, but I'm bribing them stay off the feeder by tossing them peanuts:
