Started using the Ghostwriter app on windows; so far so good, since what I'm looking for is a program that doesn't start lagging 5000 words in. Once I have that much I copy it over to manuskript and save it there anyway.
This is handy tho:
There's also a stats section that shows me how long I've been writing since I had the app open, which I never look at since it'll just show me how long I've spent staring into space.
#fox text#apps#for writers#it's free#and open source#out of curiosity I threw in all 70k of one of my fics#and started typing at the bottom of it#and it lagged a little#but just a tiny bit#granted i do have 16gb of ram#but google docs would be crawling with 70k

Just to add to this, I also did large files specifically for huge ass pillows and comforters and appliance stickers for a while before I got a full time job and the shop I was designing for wanted to scale down their selection. Your computer is the biggest part of this equation. You'll want an 8gb ram minimum, 32bit graphics interface and a 16gb storage drive. If you don't have that, invest in a graphics card and ram upgrade.
You'll be able to do large designs with those specs granted you store the final design externally (I recommend minimum of 2tb external hard drive) and Defrag your computer weekly (I'm serious don't skim on this step or you will lose work to your computer crashing). You'll also, like op said, have to work on 300dpi. The industry standard is 600dpi for graphic design, but unless you have some serious processing power which will cost an arm and a leg, large files at 600dpi are not feasible. You'll eat up your ram and spend 7 minutes waiting for a single brush stroke to load.
I also recommend making your files on 16 bit, not 32, because again it will eat up your ram and spit out the mush. Size the canvas by mm to the largest size you want to print, then add an inch on every side for bleeds. Bleeds are the extra space in the margins that get cut off after a print is printed. That should ideally be blank space the color and texture of your image background. It ensures crisp edges on your prints instead of awkward white outlines.
Also invest in a guillotine (the paper trimming kind not the rich people exterminator kind) and if you're printing yourself trim your prints. If you're going through an external printer, add bleed guides so they know where to trim the prints.
That would be the solid pink line. There should be an option on whichever program you use to add those, so look for it.
Always make your prints on CMYK color scale, not RGB. CMYK is what printers use to make color, and RGB is for screens. If you make it on RGB don't worry too much, just do a test print and change colors accordingly or convert it to CMYK after the fact.
Service your printer. It's not something many people think about, but if you print a lot, and frequently, get someone to just clean up everything inside and tighten screws again or whatever it is they do when they service printers. Do that once every year or two or when you notice more mistakes in prints.
That's all I can think of right now but happy art making and there's plenty of resources on YouTube if you look for graphic design tutorials.
How are the prints of your art so freaking beautiful? I have three of your 24x36 prints and they're the best looking pieces in my whole collection and I wish I could get my art (digital) to look half as good in a large print but I just can't figure it out. Is there some special trick to it or just your own brand of magic? Love you and your work <33
Oh thank you! I do have some tips!
If you're looking to get the crispness at scale, I think the most important factor is the size of your art. I work on big canvases, at least 8000px on the shortest side. This requires a computer that is haunted by a powerful ghost, but painting at that scale results in a finished file that you can print at large sizes (posters, wall tapestries, etc) and it'll look fantastic. As a rule of thumb, figure out the largest dimensions you want to print at before you start painting, and set up your canvas to that size at 300dpi.
Be ready to make levels/curves adjustments to your artwork to compensate for differences between how your piece displays digitally and how it prints. I usually do a couple test prints and tweak the files from there. Digital art is going to print darker/less luminous than you see it on your screen, so I make my files brighter than I actually want them to be, and they darken and turn out looking right in print.
Select paper stock with your artwork in mind — matte and semi-matte papers are much preferred for darker art like mine. And possibly for all art, all the time. Brightly colored art can work on glossy paper but idk, I don't like glossy prints in general. Maybe…too shiny? Too squeaky? I feel like a bird is going to come grab it out of my hand? on reflection, this may be a personal problem
If you're making prints at home, squint suspiciously at your printer while it prints. Keep it self-conscious, keep it on its A-game. An unsupervised printer may try to pull one over on you. Don't let it happen.
I hope that's helpful somehow! a lot of it is still mysterious to me also, don't be discouraged if it takes some trial and error!

Pls tell me what laptop you use to run inquisition, I though mine could handle it but it's still laggy and weird and I'm doing research now
I'm using a Dell G3-15! It's a core i-7 and has 16GB of RAM. The storage space is a little less than you might expect for a primarily gaming laptop (47GB total, which for context, my old non-gaming laptop had about 900GB of storage, so I'm speaking from a position of being used to wayyyy more than this) but it's worth it for the running capabilities. I haven't played a game yet that runs badly on here.
It cost me about $1,100 and it wasn't on sale at the time (rip not having a birthday near a holiday), so I'm sure on a sale you could get it much cheaper! Definitely not the cheapest laptop out there, but very far from the most expensive.
And it really is bang for the buck tbh. It is definitely beyond capable of doing the job, and imo, probably does the job just as well as those $2,000+ gaming laptops. Inquisition runs like butter even in places like Emerald Graves and Hinterlands where there are a ton of textures and graphic details; and Hollow Knight, Skyrim, and DA:Origins and DA:2 aren't even a challenge for it to run.
This is just a personal thing, but I also really love how FAST this guy cools down. It does get significantly Warm running Inquisition (nowhere near overheating though, I've made sure to keep an eye on it) but as soon as you exit the game it goes down to not-warm-at-all within about 5 minutes. Granted it has four built in fans so I probably shouldn't be shocked, but again, my old laptop took about an hour to fully cool down after playing a game, so this was a pleasant surprise.
Anyways, I highly rec! It has yet to lag and it does everyday work perfectly well too, it's a hardy little thing.

Environ-mentality short film Idea and Pre - production work for After Effects work and Final Film
With the growing issue that affects us all, I have become more aware of our effects on the environment. Living in a world that largely powers itself using NON-SUSTAINABLE fossil fuels. It makes me think we are not doing enough, and some people don’t know enough about what we can do. Examples across the world show us we can do more, but why are we not? Examples include Iceland's Carbfix project, that captures Co2 and other acidic atmospheric gasses, liquidizes them then pumps them into the bedrock bellow where they then become stable minerals. (At the time of writing this) Morocco has the largest solar farm in the world as of 2020 (NOOR POWER PLANT) with an estimated size equivalent to 3500 football pitches. Iceland is powered 100% by sustainable energy and it took 4 years for Morocco to produce 49% of their energy sustainably. Why is it then that the UK and US are doing so poorly in the field of renewable energy? Accounting for 37.4% of renewable energy from the UK and a shocking 11% produced in America.
I want to discuss the damaging effects Co2 emissions from non-sustainable fuel sources has on the environment around us such as Air pollution, climate change, causing weather patterns to become more & more unpredictable, damage to the ocean, the loss of wild areas due to population and how ultimately greed and selfishness is hurting the world we inhabit. What we can do to change future for the better.
With this type of topic there is a lot of organizations who would love to be given the chance to spread their message. So, I would like to give them the chance to do just that,
I plan to approach certain companies or individuals offering them a chance to offer contributors for the film or to give their input. Such as Liverpool Friends of the earth, WWF to discuss the earth hour that happens once a year across the globe and Sea Legacy which is a company devoted to saving the oceans across the world and the wildlife that inhabit it.
Sea Legacy
Liverpool Friends of the earth https://friendsoftheearth.uk/groups/liverpool
WWF UK - 01483 426444
Stephenson Institute For Renewable Energy
I will need to need to research the topic a lot more than I have done because I feel as though I do not know enough yet to make a compelling piece of work. Although it is very quickly becoming a topic of great interest to me.
My Reading List for this topic will be.
Ahluwalia, V., 2013. Environmental Studies. New Delhi: The Energy and Resources Institute.
Berners-Lee, M., 2019. There Is No Planet B. Cambridge (Reino Unido) [etc.]: Cambridge University Press.
Klein, N., 2015. This Changes Everything. New York: Penguin books.
Wallace-Wells, D., 2019. The Uninhabitable Earth. 1st ed. New York, New York: Crown Publishing Group.
Inspiration for the film has come from personal interest. As well as other documentaries and docuseries out there, such as Kiss the Ground, Our Planet (including BTS) and Down to Earth. I have also been a plant-based eater for just over a year now, I originally turned plant-based to improve my health. Although after some time I have discovered that there are lot of benefits to the environment when people lower their animal product consumption. (not to say animal products are the only problem with the food industry)
I was also watching ‘I Am Greta’ the documentary about Greta Thunberg and her journey to where she is today, bringing awareness to the climate crisis across the globe resulting in the Fridays for future movement. Which inspired a tremendous amount of school children to protest against their governments attitude towards climate change.
Equipment & Budget:

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch review: How the new M1 chip stacks up to Intel’s
Apple (AAPL) is within the midst of one of many largest modifications to its Mac line of merchandise in additional than a decade. After 15 years, the corporate is ditching its long-standing relationship with Intel (INTC) and is as an alternative constructing its personal processor particularly designed for its laptops and desktops referred to as the M1 chip.
And one of many first merchandise to get the M1 can be one among Apple’s most essential: the MacBook Professional 13-inch. A workhorse for photograph and video editors who want a robust machine on the go, the Professional is a necessary proving floor for the M1 chip’s capabilities.
And with a potent graphics processing unit (GPU), and central processing unit (CPU), together with 8GB of RAM, the M1-powered Professional I’ve been working with has confirmed to be an exceptionally spectacular instance of what Apple’s new chip brings to its machines. And one of many uncommon first-generation merchandise I’m assured in recommending.
The M1 chip
Let’s get one factor out of the best way in the case of the brand new 13-inch MacBook Professional. There’s no distinction in outward look between it and the prior era Intel-based Professional. Which means there’s no means so that you can inform which model of the Professional you’re working with out trying on the system’s specs.
Each laptops have the identical dimensions, identical 13.3-inch Retina Show, and identical backlit Magic Keyboard, which is a merciful improve from the unreliable butterfly-style keyboards discovered on older MacBooks.
Beneath the hood, although, issues are far totally different than earlier than. The Arm-based M1 chip, which Apple launched throughout a digital press occasion at its Cupertino, California, headquarters earlier this month, is a wild departure from the Intel processors the corporate has relied on since 2005. Its structure is much like the chips Apple makes use of in its iPhone and iPad, placing energy consumption and efficiency on the forefront.
Apple’s new M1 processor is coming to the MacBook Air and MacBook Professional 13-inch, in addition to the brand new Mac mini. (Picture: Apple)
In contrast to Intel’s chips, the M1 is constructed utilizing a 5-nanometer course of, that means its transistors measure simply 5 nanometers in measurement. Intel, in the meantime, is caught on a 10-nanometer course of, and not too long ago introduced its 7-nm chips can be delayed. AMD (AMD), for its half, is working with 7-nm chips, that means that Apple is already forward of the curve.
Story continues
Throughout its announcement, Apple mentioned that its M1 chip gives enhancements over main PC processors when it comes to each CPU and GPU efficiency, claiming that it has “the quickest built-in GPU on this planet,” and options “the world’s quickest CPU cores in low-power silicon.”
I’ve been utilizing the M1-powered Professional as I might my regular work pc, and haven’t observed any little bit of slowdown, exterior of the occasional, and predictable, hiccup in Google’s (GOOG, GOOGL) Chrome browser.
A pleasant apart about having the M1 chip within the Professional is that it additionally means Apple makes use of its personal picture sign processor for its FaceTime digicam, which dramatically improves the picture high quality of your video chats.
As for battery life, Apple guarantees the Professional will get a whopping 20 hours of energy out of a single cost whereas enjoying again video, in comparison with 10 hours for the Intel model of the machine. And whereas I can’t say that it particularly manages that, I can inform you that the battery in my evaluate unit appeared prefer it simply wouldn’t give up. Even after a full day of use, I nonetheless had loads of juice to maintain utilizing the Professional properly into the evening.
That’s incredible for professionals on the go. What’s not so incredible is that the M1-powered Professional contains simply two Thunderbolt/ USB C ports, whereas the Intel model will get 4. In case you’re the kind of one that wants as many ports as potential, that’s a giant bummer. And sure, there are growth dongles so as to add extra ports, however with a $1,299 laptop computer, you shouldn’t want one.
What about graphics efficiency?
The M1-powered MacBook Professional 13-inch options an built-in GPU much like what you’d discover in an Intel-powered Professional.
I fired up “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” on each the M1-powered Professional with 8GB of RAM and a 2020 13-inch MacBook Professional with an Intel Core i5 processor, Intel Iris Plus Graphics, and 16GB of RAM. The M1-powered Professional blew the Intel-powered machine away.
The MacBook Professional 12-inch with its M1 chip gives higher efficiency in video games like “Shadow of the Tomb Raider.” (Picture: Apple)
After I turned on the sport’s built-in benchmarking device, the Intel machine routinely defaulted to the bottom settings, managing simply 29 frames per second. Usually, you’d search for about 60 frames per second for a recreation to be comfortably playable. After I kicked the graphics as much as their highest settings, the body price dropped to 22 frames per second.
Whatever the settings I used, although, the Intel-powered system had hassle rendering textures and left unusual artifacts round characters.
The M1-powered MacBook Professional dealt with the sport much better, notching 57 frames per second with the graphics set to their lowest and 30 frames per second at their highest settings. Granted, you’re not going to need to play the sport at 30 frames per second, however it nonetheless regarded much better than what the Intel system needed to provide.
Working Intel apps on the M1
Did I point out that “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” isn’t even constructed for Apple’s M1 chip structure?
That’s proper, apps constructed for Intel’s structure, which is, properly, a lot of the pc applications on the market immediately, run with out problem on the M1 chip. That’s enormous for Apple, contemplating that Home windows PC producers which have beforehand used Arm-based chips bumped into compatibility points with apps developed for Intel’s processor structure.
Apple does this with a program referred to as Rosetta 2, which interprets Intel apps for the M1 chip. And since this all occurs within the background, you’ll, ideally, by no means know if an app was constructed for Intel’s chip or Apple’s.
In reality, almost each app I’ve been utilizing since I began reviewing the brand new MacBook Professional 13-inch was constructed for Intel’s chip structure together with Chrome, Spotify (SPOT), Slack (WORK), “Shadow of the Tomb Raider,” and Pixelmator. And I haven’t observed any points with any of them. The truth that this all works with out the tip consumer noticing can’t be oversold.
iOS and iPadOS apps come to the Mac
Naturally, as a result of the M1 chip is utilizing related structure to the processors present in Apple’s iPhone and iPad, apps for these gadgets will now work on the Mac, as properly. That is the completion of a aim that Apple has been working towards for a while. Even the interface for Apple’s newest model of macOS, macOS Large Sur, feels extra just like the iOS and iPadOS, proper all the way down to the icons and new Management Heart.
With the power to run the thousands and thousands of apps within the App Retailer, Macs immediately change into extra useful to their customers. You possibly can, for example, work throughout gadgets with an analogous expertise, or just entry the apps that you simply already love in your iPhone or iPad in your laptop computer or desktop.
However not all apps work as properly on the Mac as they do on the iPhone or iPad. The sport “Crossy Street,” for example, is a much better consumer expertise with a contact display screen than when utilizing the MacBook Professional’s touchpad. “Amongst Us” works properly sufficient, however it nonetheless feels prefer it might use a contact display screen show.
In fact, loads of apps operate properly on the Mac, and don’t require contact screen-specific controls. However with iOS and iPadOS apps now out there for Apple’s laptops and desktops, it appears as if the corporate ought to at the least provide the choice for a contact display screen.
Opponents like Dell have already confirmed that contact screens will be constructed into extremely skinny and light-weight laptops, so why Apple hasn’t accomplished the identical is a bit confounding.
Must you get it?
I’m usually cautious of advising individuals of buying first-generation merchandise, as a result of they nearly invariably have kinks that should be labored out. However from what I can inform of the MacBook Professional 13-inch, there aren’t any. I’m certain over time as extra individuals use the laptop computer, points will creep up. However standing right here on the outset, this seems as if it’s as strong a machine as its Intel-powered siblings — however higher due to its, spectacular battery life.
I do, nevertheless, want Apple included greater than two Thunderbolt ports, particularly when the Intel-powered Professional will get 4.
At $1,299, the Professional isn’t for many customers. That’s the area of the volume-selling MacBook Air, which additionally will get the M1 chip. However for professionals and shoppers on the lookout for a high-powered machine, the MacBook Professional 13-inch with the brand new M1 chip delivers in nearly each means.

Best Gaming PC in 2020
Hi every one, new year is just around the corner. We are stepping into 2020, new year with new passion and resolutions. For the gamers, buying best PC for gaming is a hard decision. Let us make it easy for you.
Instead of running around and looking for different parts and then going through hard and tiring process of assembling them, buying per-built gaming PC is the ideal thing to do. You don’t have to worry about anything, buying parts, assembling, warranties etc. just go and buy whats fit in your pocket.
We have make it more easy to select which PC is to buy. We have made the list of top 5 Gaming PC.
iBuyPower RDY ELIBG207:
There is no doubt that iBuyPower RDY ELIBG207 is still at the top of the list. Company has managed to make this PC high specs and low on price. This is best you can get in per-built gaming PCs. This PC comes with the top of the lines specs with core i9 9900k and RTX 2080 Ti 11GB in fair price that you are paying for what you are not getting. The ELIBG207 comes loaded with some top of the line performance parts, focused around its mighty RTX 2080 Ti GPU and Core i9-9900K CPU, good power to drive AAA titles at 4K Ultra at great frame rates.
GPU: GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB
CPU: Core i-9 9900K
Motherboard: MSI MAG Z390 Tomahawk
RAM: XPG SPECTRIX D41 RGB 16 GB DDR4-3200MHz
Storage: 1TB Western Digital Blue SSD
PSU: Thermaltake 650W Toughpower Grand RGB -80 PLUS Gold
CPU Cooling: iBUYPOWER 120mm RGB Liquid Cooling System
Going with this PC, we can assure you that you will not run into
any issues that might deter your overall experience in any way.
Granted, the initial storage might not be enough for some people but there is plenty of room for upgrades.
Corsair One i160:
Corsair was first smallest gaming PC when it first came to the market, its still got the same position. Despite its size, it hold everything that a good gaming PC has. It is small, powerful and looks amazingly good in its small chases. It also packed with Core i9 9900k and graphics RTX 2080Ti. Something like these, you can tell how serious they are about building gaming PC. Internally, the One is built around a custom liquid cooling system with independent coolers and radiators for the CPU and GPU that will activate as necessary. This allows Corsair to cram truly high-end components into such a small case and still maintain acceptable working temperatures, but it’s also the reason why upgrading the CPU and GPU is so difficult.
Processor: Intel Core i9-9900K
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti
Memory: 32GB DDR4-2666
Storage: 480GB M.2 NVMe SSD, 2TB 5400RPM 2.5”HDD
Motherboard: MSI Z370 Mini-ITX
PSU: Corsair SF600, 80 Plus Gold
The main use for the One is gaming, and the experience is exactly as you might expect from a Core i9 paired with an RTX 2080 Ti. Games like Star Wars Battlefront II, Battlefield V, and Forza Horizon 4 run well over 60 frames per second at 4K resolutions and ultra settings. Drop down to 1440p, and you’ll be able to hit 100 fps or more in virtually any game; 1080p gaming is child’s play for the One.
Dell XPS Tower Special Edition:
For starters, best thing about this PC is that it comes with a compact and a minimalist design. It does not even look like a gaming PC. But it does pack a Core i7 8700 with a GTX 1070. The XPS Tower additionally retains a similar sensible tool-free upgradability. that it borrowed from the Alien-ware Aurora. that helps you to pop the machine open and take away the graphics card while not lifting a screwdriver. When comparing benchmark results between our new Core i7-8700 unit and our previous Core i7-7700K model (both packing an Nvidia GTX 1070).we noticed almost universal improvements to both gaming and multitasking.
CPU: 3.2GHz Intel Core i7-8700 (hexa-core, 6M Cache, up to 4.6GHz)
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070; Intel UHD Graphics 630
RAM: 16GB DDR4 (2,666MHz)
Power Supply: 460W
Storage: 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, 1TB HDD (7,200 rpm)
Optical drive: 8x DVD-RW drive
Ports: 7 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB 3.1 Type-A, 1 x USB 3.1 Type-C, 2 x USB 2.0, SD card slot, HDMI, Display Port, Gigabit Ethernet
Connectivity: Killer 1535 802.11ac (2x2), Bluetooth 4.1
As far as the complaints are concerned, my only issue with this PC is the use of a non-K CPU, something that is a consistent issue with most of the gaming pre-built gaming PCs available in the market. Something that is not that hard to deal with as there is always the upgradability factor.
CyberpowerPC Gamer Xtreme:
C YBERPOWER PC Gamer Xtreme is one that you will likely find popping up on many lists. Known for its high quality performance and reliable features. t’s fully VR ready, too, which is obviously very important. It’s got full access to the facilities needed to use your VR headsets like the Occulus Rift. the good thing about this PC is that it comes with a pretty modern design. The case, obviously, looks like a modded Cooler Master case, but that is great considering how there is plenty of room for upgrades. Additionally, another great thing is that for the price you are paying, you are getting a fairly amazing PC that should get the job done for you regardless of the price you are paying.
CPU: Intel i5 7400
CPU Cooler: Stock Intel cooler
GPU: MSI RX 580 Armor 4G
RAM: ADATA 8GB 2400MHz (2x4GB)
Storage: WD Blue 1TB HDD
PSU: ATNG 500W 80+
Connectivity: 5x USB 3.0 | 2x USB 2.0. 7.1 channel audio. Integrated ethernet + WiFi.
On the downsides, the only thing that bothers me is the fact that there is a lack of USB Type C or Thunderbolt 3 ports, which can be an issue.
HP Omen Obelisk:
HP was finally taking the step in the right direction by introducing some of the best gaming components with great performance and price, as well. The Obelisk won't wow you with its aesthetics, and it doesn't have a lot of room for further upgrades and expansion, but if you're in the market for a PC that can handle the current generation of games at 4K and will easily tide you over for several years into the next generation, the Obelisk is an excellent choice. To start with the good things, the PC comes with some pretty promising components like Intel’s Core i7 8700, as well as a RTX 2080. This is definitely something great, because you can get a lot of performance.
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700
GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 8GB
Storage: 512 B PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD; 1TB 7200 rpm SATA HDD
Motherboard: Intel H370 Chipset
RAM: HyperX 32GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM (2 x 16 GB)
PSU: 500 W Bronze.
On the downside, one of the things that I cannot excuse at all is the use of a bronze rated power supply for a machine of this caliber. Additionally, I do not understand the use of non K CPU which limits the actual potential of this build.
As we know market is full of pre built gaming PCs. New buyer can easily be confused. Well, its good to have many options. That’s why we wrote this article just to make it bit easier for a new user. Just to have enough knowledge about gaming PC. And what fits in his requirements.
In my opinion, these PCs will give you better gaming experience.
If you need more help in choosing one, then we, Computer Support Centre, are happy to help you anytime.

So I know a few of you have been wondering if I dropped into a hole or something. The tl;dr answer is that I’ve been trying to salvage my data from my computer’s hard drive for about two weeks now and I’m just now getting to the point where I can reinstall Windows. If you want to actually read about the rest of the fiasco, it’s under the jump.
I’ve known (intellectually) for a while that my hard drive was in trouble–actually all the way back from the LAST time I had a major computer crisis (the time that I took the machine to a computer shop to have them test my gfx cards and they instead managed to destroy all 16GB of my RAM overnight). But since the computer was still running well enough with the occasional hiccup, I didn’t really care to do anything–at least not until Sims 4 began to crash, and then Sims 3 began to crash, and then the OS began to crash, and the error codes and startup repair information all pointed straight at imminent hard drive failure. Everyone I spoke to (software engineer husband, tech guy at work who builds his own gaming rigs, every computer forum online) highly recommended that I save my data and reinstall Windows. Sounds good! I have this restore disk here … that actually isn’t a restore disk? Huh? … ah, I have an OEM version of Windows. Which means it came pre-installed. Which means there’s no factory restore disk. Now granted, that’s my own fault for not making any backups or preparing my own reinstallation disk, but I honestly wouldn’t have guessed that the computer would actually last for six years! As it turns out, you can’t download the data to restore Windows 7 from Microsoft for a pre-installed OS. You have to call your computer manufacturer, or (conveniently!) upgrade to Windows 10. I decided to call Dell, though frankly I should have known better after trying to use their programs that told me to “insert a blank DVD” after I had to, y’know, format it because it was blank. As it turned out, restoration DVDs are $30. LOLNOTHXU.
… so. For about three days I scouted around for a solution (which turned out to be getting an original .iso file of Windows 7 and saving it to a USB). That went well until I moved the extracted files back onto the desktop to clear some space on my USB to move items. After that the hard drive refused to boot and I couldn’t get Windows to open for about 2 days straight–Startup Repair didn’t work, Safe Mode didn’t work, a regular boot didn’t work, Windows Diagnostics could only advise that several of the HDD sectors were going bad. Duh. This became a much bigger and more worrisome issue once I realized that I could not redownload the files through the netbook because it, also, is completely out of date. (I couldn’t redownload the program that extracts .iso files because the netbook wanted me to download IE 11, and I couldn’t download that because I was missing a service pack update, and I couldn’t download that because I had the wrong version of Windows detected on the netbook, and arrrrrrgh.) It was a very scary 24 hours before the hard drive was able to boot itself up again and let me grab the last of my things and get them to safety. (And I learned my lesson and went to the store to buy a 32GB USB that cost $10 that would have saved me a LOT of time if I had thought to do that immediately.) So now Windows 7 is installed on my new SSHD drive, and I’m working on getting reconnected to the net. It’ll probably be through the weekend and MLKJr. Day before I get all of my programs reinstalled, but I’ll be lurking around your dashes some time in the very near future again! ^___^

MSI GF65 THIN 9SEXR GAMING LAPTOP REVIEW
I don't mean to be disparaging of the MSI GF65 THIN 9SEXR, but take a look at its technical specifications and you'll find the same parts that have been powering our machines for over a year—there's truly nothing Super, 7nm, or 10th Gen about it. Yet its announcement has come as part of one of the few captivating developments in gaming laptops beyond AMD's Ryzen 4000 APUs.
With the release of its Super GPU silicon for mobile, the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2080 Super, Nvidia also promised to make its RTX 2060 GPU available in a gaming laptop for under ($999) £999. That potentially means more to parsimonious customers than high-end GPUs, and it's not often that gaming laptops are level-pegging with their DIY PC counterparts. MSI's GF65 is one of the first of a handful of gaming laptops to make good on that promise. In the UK, anyways.
It's powered by an RTX 2060, marking a step-up upgrade over the GTX 1660 Ti in 2019's top model. With that not only comes the promise of a Turing GPU fit with 6GB of GDDR6 and 1,920 CUDA Cores—with the added potential of portable AI acceleration in creative applications and Nvidia's updated Turing encoder—but also an easier point of entry into real-time ray tracing and Nvidia's AI upscaling technology, DLSS 2.0.
At first glance not much has changed with the exterior of the GF65 compared with its predecessor. Both feature the same inornate chassis at 21.7mm thick, and the largely plastic construction does leave a lot to be desired. It's undoubtedly a little on the large size, too, especially as we've already seen some incredibly thin gaming laptops so far this year. But at 1.86kg it is at least lighter than some comparable laptops in this price bracket.
The 15.6-inch 1080p panel is surrounded by a bezel that, while at its thinnest point extends only 0.7mm, reaches 2.7cm closer to the hinges. At least it houses a panel rated to 120Hz, which is suitably fast to make good on the promises of the RTX 2060 within. And it's also of the IPS variety, so good marks here for an all-round decent panel pairing for the GF65's entry-level RTX GPU.
Joining the fray is Intel's Core i7 9750H. Despite the first wave of Intel 10th Gen Comet Lake H-series laptops starting to filter out from the rank and file of Intel's partners—including MSI's very own GF63 Slim in identical garb to the GF65—it's instead made the decision to stick with the older, cheaper, Core i7 9750H. With relatively familiar specifications from the 14nm family, and an apparent price premium on the 10th Gen chips—by Intel's own admission—I can't help but think it made the right choice.
While the Core i7 9750H hits max velocity at 4.5GHz—quite a bit lower than its 10th Gen sibling—what matters most is whether it can sustain its rated clocks. In a single-core run of Cinebench R15, it maintained 4.4GHz for the duration, only a touch shy of the chip's rated limit of 4.5GHz boost, and in multi-core testing that drops to around the 3.7GHz mark, but maintains it throughout.
So whatever misgivings I may have for the chassis in terms of its looks, it's capable enough of maintaining decent performance. We saw no significant dips in performance across a lengthy three run marathon of the Metro Exodus benchmark at ultra, either. Temperatures soared to 97 degrees max for the CPU and 81 degrees max for the GPU that same run, but thankfully severe throttling was avoided with some judicious fan RPM—it's far from the quietest laptop going.
Throughout our gaming benchmarks, the MSI GF65 performs well—if only a little shy of the Asus TUF FA506IV equipped with an RTX 2060 and AMD Ryzen 4800H. That's true in all but Far Cry New Dawn where the TUF inexplicably, and repeatedly, soared above the rest.
What could become a boon to the GF65 (and the TUF, for that matter) is the growing prevalence of DLSS within the latest games. With DLSS offering the ability to improve frame rates, with little downside on the second-gen DLSS 2.0, the jump to the RTX 2060 nets the possibility of a large performance boon over 16-series cards of more than the silicon technically allows. You will have to put your faith in Nvidia and game developers to go above and beyond to access that performance, however, and it's by no means a guarantee—the least bit for older games.
And while that all makes an RTX 2060 for under £1,000 sound like an alluring offer, MSI has made some sacrifices with the 2020 model of the GF65 in order to scrape in under the mark.
Both memory and storage have been stripped back in order to keep the balance sheet for parts in good stead with the shift to the RTX 20-series GPU. Unfortunately, that means replacing the 512GB SSD with a 256GB one, which after OS installation is running frightfully low on capacity with only a few benchmarks installed. That puts a hard limit on your choice of games (or game), too. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is absolutely out of the question without an upgrade.
The decision to pare back memory to single-channel will also strike fear in the hearts of many a PC builder. The 8GB of dual-channel memory is capable of getting by in most titles, especially at 1080p on a laptop such as this. But with only a single channel in play, that 8GB doesn't get you very far. Memory bandwidth is significantly hampered, and that may find you dropping frames in demanding games or incredibly conscious of app RAM usage for the duration of your time with the GF65.
The last-gen GF65 (2019) doesn't suffer the same fate. For a similar price tag, last year's model comes with a GTX 1660 Ti, 16GB of dual-channel memory, and a 512GB panel. The Asus TUF FA506IV, too. Granted, £300 is no small matter more, but its Ryzen 4000 mobile/RTX 2060 combo is a great buy. And it's got all the memory and storage you could want at that price and form factor. The GF65 THIN 9SEXR feels like a partially incomplete product by comparison, and lacking what is required to get the most out of it.
The models available in the US have seen especially harsh cuts to come in under $1,000. In order to get your hands on an RTX 2060 for $999, you'll have to make do with Intel's Core i5 9300H, in lieu of the Core i7 9750H found in the UK model. At least the storage has returned to a healthy 512GB SSD.
In order to hit a specification roughly analogous with the UK model at £999, you'll have to spend $1,099. That's actually rather favourable to the dollar when you look at today's exchange rate, and you still hold on to that 512GB SSD, but it's not quite in keeping with Nvidia's $999 promise, is it?
Strangely the MSI GF65 THIN 9SEXR will be available exclusively at Curry's PC World from May 4th in the UK. If you reside in the US, you can find that similar configuration I mentioned for $1,099 across major retailers.
With the specs list of the UK model as it is, the GF65 does leave me wanting for more. Performance is decent in today's games, but I'm not entirely convinced how much ray tracing you're going to get done with a spec that only gets by with the skin of its teeth without cutting-edge rendering tech helping to grind performance into pulp.
But I usually recommend overspending on your graphics card and making up for less storage capacity when you can afford it—so why should a laptop be any different? The upgrade process is at least a simple one. Pop the underside off by removing an ungodly quantity of screws and you'll find a spare NVMe slot and a spare SODIMM slot. Both can be fitted with off-the-shelf parts as and when you have the budget to do so. Two NVMe slots also makes for an easy transfer if you do end up swapping out your boot drive.
As important as it is to point out what's been lost in order to hit £999, it's just as important to quantify what has been gained as a result of offering RTX at this price point. You can't upgrade a laptop GPU yourself, after all, it's soldered down tight. So the shift to the RTX 2060, even with sacrifice, may make the most financial sense for someone looking to buy an RTX laptop without the means to immediately buy one that's high-end on all counts.

One Mix 3S Yoga: Not the First Netbook, But Probably The Best
Our verdict of the One-Netbook One Mix 3S: If you absolutely need maximum portability but want all the power you can get, this is a good buy, but the same money can buy you a much better laptop.710
It’s official: netbooks are back. It started with a few smaller computers here and there, but it wasn’t long before the trickle became a torrent. Things have changed though. The netbooks of 10 years ago were tiny and portable, yes, but they were also massively underpowered.
On the other hand, the netbooks we’re seeing released now can be as powerful as any other laptop, just scaled down in size. The One Mix 3S is an example of just how mighty these pint-sized powerhouses can be. Whether you actually need one for yourself is another matter entirely.

One Mix 3S Hardware Specifications
The One Mix 3S comes in a few different variations. The specs of our review unit, which appears to be the base model, are reflected below. You can also get it with major power upgrades like an i7 processor, though obviously, it will cost you more.
CPU: Intel Core M3-8100Y (1.1GHz to 3.4GHz)
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 615
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 512 NVMe SSD
Screen: 8.4″, 2560×1600 55Hz multi-touch IPS display @ 358ppi
Battery: 8,600 mAh 3.7V
Dimensions: 204mm x 129mm x 14.9mm or 8.03 x 5.07 x 0.58 inches
Wireless: Dual-band 802.11ac / Bluetooth 4.0
Ports: USB-C, USB 3.0, Micro HDMI, Headset, TF card slot
Other: Fingerprint scanner, optional stylus with 4,096 pressure levels
Price: under $900 at GeekBuying.com
The One Mix 3S runs Windows 10 Home. We’d have preferred to see Windows 10 Pro, but this helps keep the initial price down, and you can always upgrade easy enough from the Windows Store.
Body and Design
As you can likely tell by either reading the size specs above or just looking at the photos, this is a tiny computer. Because of the overall small dimensions, it looks a little on the chunky side, but compared to my MacBook Pro, it’s just as thin.
Our review unit came in a sleek black finish that was stunning out of the box. There’s a reason I say “was” instead of “is.” This is a bit of a fingerprint magnet. Within a few minutes of handling the laptop, it didn’t look nearly as sleek as it had out of the box. A quick wipe with a microfibre cloth had it back to its original look.
The netbooks of old were often flimsy, but this is anything but. Like the One Mix 2S, this is machined from solid aluminum, giving it a very solid feel. This extends to the netbook as a whole, especially the hinges for the screen, which have been the downfall of many a laptop.
Given the small size, this is among the most portable computers you’ll find. It won’t quite fit in your pocket as advertised, but it will certainly fit in a purse and can easily fit into all but the most jam-packed backpacks.
Display and Brightness
The screen is almost overkill, with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 packed into an 8.4-inch screen size. That’s close to the resolution of a Surface Pro, but in a much smaller screen size. This results in an ultra-crisp pixel density of 358 pixels per inch.
The color isn’t as good as the overall display, however. Colors are a little muted and washed out when compared to the displays on other gadgets I had handy. Granted I had to look, but this was definitely noticeable.
One issue I’m not sure will be so obvious, but did give me pause during testing, is the refresh rate. Instead of the usual 60Hz refresh rate, the One Mix 3S runs at 55Hz. This caused a noticeable strobing effect when I was shooting photos and video.
Even after I was done shooting, I could swear I noticed a vague strobing effect when looking at the screen. This could have been in my head, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you’re sensitive to this sort of thing.
Is the Tiny Keyboard Usable?
As with any computer like this, the keyboard is small. There’s no getting around that. Because of its small size, the keyboard layout has changed. This is the actual problem with these netbooks, rather than the individual key size.
If a company somehow manages to fit a standard keyboard layout into a netbook-sized keyboard, they’ll deserve some sort of award. Until then, it’s a matter of figuring out which sacrifices you can comfortably live with and which are simply untenable.
With the One Mix 3S, there are a few specific problems. The first and most common is the tiny space bar. For frequent users of the tab key, it’s even worse, as this key has been relocated to the function keys. The quote keys are down to the right of the space bar as well.
One plus of the tiny keyboard is that it is backlit. Strangely though, the backlight is aggressive about turning off. This is likely in the name of saving battery life, but if you frequently type in a dark room, this will get annoying quickly.
What’s the Point of the Pointer?
While older netbooks usually still included a touchpad, these are hard to find on modern netbooks. In the case of the One Mix 3S, it uses an infrared induction mouse. We’ve seen these before, and while not ideal, they are usable.
The problem in the case of the One Mix 3S is the location. On older One Mix models and similar netbook-style computers like the Chuwi MiniBook 8″, the “mouse” is located in the middle of the spacebar, similar to where a ThinkPad-style trackpoint would be. Here it’s below the space bar and in between the left and right mouse buttons, making it unwieldy to use.
As I and others have said before, an actual rubber trackpoint would be both smaller and easier to use. This could simply be familiarity, but the induction mouse would be maddening if it was your only option for navigating the OS.
Fortunately, the screen on the One Mix 3S is a touchscreen, which alleviates almost all of the mouse-related issues. Even better, our review unit shipped with a stylus, which made selecting tiny user interface elements possible.
The touchscreen and stylus allow the One Mix 3S to pull double duty as a Windows 10 tablet. It’s not going to give Microsoft’s Surface Pro devices a run for their money, but it works quite well in tablet mode.
Performance
As reading the specs might have clued you in, the One Mix 3S isn’t a toy. This is a serious computer that just happens to be in an ultra-portable form factor. While I noticed limitations from the screen size and keyboard, I never felt like the hardware was slowing me down.
Thermal issues can pop up on smaller form factor computers like this, so you may be glad to know the fans are pretty aggressive. They don’t get overly loud, but they tend to kick in as soon as the computer starts to work at all.
I’m not quite sure why, but when I tried running benchmarks, they didn’t line up with the performance I noticed. Geekbench gave me scores of 654 for single-core performance and 1263 for multi-core performance, much slower than scores I’ve seen on less powerful hardware. The computer certainly felt more responsive than these scores would indicate.
Another area where the One Mix 3S excelled was Wi-Fi speed. Unlike the One Mix 2S, which was hampered by problematic Wi-Fi, I never noticed any issues with the One Mix 3S.
Battery Life
The One Mix 3S sports an 8,600mAh battery, bigger than the 6,500mAh battery in the One Mix 2S. Of course, this model has a bigger screen, but battery life is still improved overall.
I averaged around 6 hours of life per charge during my testing, though this varied based on how much I was pushing the hardware. The good news is that the One Mix 3S doesn’t seem to sip much power when the screen is shut, so you don’t need to worry about shutting it down to save power.
Like other modern netbooks, the One Mix 3S uses USB-C for charging. It only has a single USB-C port, which can be problematic, but like other similar computers, you can always get around this by using a hub.
How long it takes to charge will vary based on the charger you’re using. With the included 12V, 2.5A charger, charge time was around 2 to 3 hours.
Should You Buy the One Mix 3S?
With some other modern netbooks, I’ve noticed that while the specs seem powerful enough, actually using them still feels slow. That isn’t the case with the One Mix 3S. This feels like a computer that, with the exception of editing video, I’d have no problem using on a day to day basis. That is assuming that I’d eventually get used to the keyboard.
That said, if you’re just looking for a moderately powerful laptop, the One Mix 3S shouldn’t be at the top of the list. If portability is your first concern, with power coming in a close second, then the One Mix 3S is absolutely worth looking at. The sheer amount of RAM alone will be very useful when it comes to everyday computing tasks.
If you’re not in a rush, you might just want to wait a few months and see what comes down the pike next. We’re in a great time for netbooks, with each new model seemingly better than the last. If that trend continues, I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
The One Mix 3S, configured as we reviewed it, will cost you between just under $900 currently. That certainly isn’t cheap, and as mentioned above, that will buy you plenty of power in a standard-sized laptop. That said, if you crave portability but can’t sacrifice the power, you could certainly do a lot worse.
Enter the Competition!

Team Sonic Racing – Review
One of my favourite things in gaming is the subliminal rivalries between protagonists. Sam Fisher has Solid Snake, Duke Nukem has Serious Sam, Nathan Drake has Lara Croft, and of course, Sonic has Mario. While they start off as a product of fandom, I like how these little feuds inevitably trickle down to a developmental level. Because whenever studios start competing, you just know someone will end up with a great game.
I therefore think Sonic has every right to star in a racing game even if ‘The Blue Blur’ could probably outrun all the karts and then some. To me, a Sonic kart racer is a salute towards the long-standing duel between Sega and Nintendo trying to one up each other. While other kart games tend to feel like a knock-off of Mario Kart, the attempts by Sega somehow always felt more like a proper challenge.
That moment when your game is just as good as Mario’s
The PC has criminally slim pickings when it comes to the selection of decent kart games at our disposal, and Team Sonic Racing represents a good choice. All the strengths that Nintendo fans have been enjoying for years can be found right here. However, I was confused by several decisions made by Sumo Digital in the aftermath of their previous game, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. When compared with its prequel, certain aspects of Team Sonic Racing just feel like a step backwards.
Sub Sonic
This is still a great Sonic racing entry, so let’s get the nasty stuff out of the way starting with this game’s biggest let-down: The plot. Indeed, here we have a kart racer where someone actually deemed it necessary to shoehorn a story into the career campaign. I have probably driven virtual karts almost as much as my actual car, and I have never felt like the experience would be enhanced by, or even needed, a story.
Perhaps this is his biggest rival.
The narrative plays out within cut scenes between races, where characters speak to each other in a speech bubble, JRPG-style. Basically, a tanuki named Dodon Pa holds a huge racing tournament for the friends and foes of Sonic. He need to examine how well groups can race together so that he can develop an engine that runs on the power of… teamwork.
That’s right, teamwork. As a surprise to no one, Doctor Robotnik/Eggman joins in on the action with the ultimate goal of stealing this extraordinary new engine. It’s up to Sonic to protect his friends, and thwart the plans of the rotund, mad scientist. Again. Though, I have no idea why Doctor Eggman wants this engine so bad because he hasn’t got friends anyway.
Not the worst example, but it is all downhill from here.
I can usually turn a deaf ear towards the cheesy dialogue in Sonic games, but the exchanges in Team Sonic Racing’sstory are on the level of an explosion in a cheddar store. Which nine-year-old was tasked with writing their lines? It becomes utterly cringe-worthy at times, and this represents the final nail in a coffin for a story that should not have been told in the first place. Nothing beats a good old career mode, and I have never been this grateful for a skip button.
A prickle of hedgehogs
Despite the story made a flub out of introducing the notion of teamwork, Sonic Team Racing’s main selling point is that you can race both against and with other people on the track. Whether it be couch co-op or online, the emphasis here is racing as your only little squad in a style that reminded me a lot of Need for Speed: Carbon.
What you can therefore expect is a lot of slip-streaming, helpful shunts as well as sharing items with your team all so that your overall positions can contribute to the win. It really does not matter who crosses the finish line first since the game assigns a consistent score to each place. This was a nice feature since I found other team-based, racing games still emotionally blackmail you, player 1, to cross the line before anyone else.
Drive in the yellow trail for an extra speed boost!
This makes for an interesting dynamic not just in terms of how the game plays, but also how Sumo Digital could make one vehicle type actually feel completely different from the next. As I mentioned, karts leave behind a yellow trail for the team to slipstream in, and if anyone missed the item collection points you can toss them a rocket or a boost power-up. Players can also shunt, or be shunted by, their mates back into the race at full speed if they spin out.
Also encouraging the notion of working together is that your squad of three always consists of three different kart types. The technique cart types, driven by characters such as Tails or Silver, drift just a tad more easily around the corner, while the speed type cars of Sonic and Amy have a higher top speed. The power type vehicles of Knuckles and Big are a bit more sluggish, but they are far less affected by knocks and rough terrain.
His car is actually pretty solid on the track
You can really tell the difference between them, and each type of kart encourages a slightly different play style. Players that really want to dominate the competition in a tactful way should combine the strengths of their carts, and thankfully the AI make excellent racing partners.
Further encouraging the notion of team work is of course the Team Ultimate power-up. Like the All-Star ability in the previous game, this power-up grants you a substantial boost in speed and invulnerability. The only way to obtain this beauty is by doing all the team based activities I mentioned above. Nevertheless, let me reassure those more inclined towards playing solo that Team Sonic Racing offers every race mode in both team and single-player options.
One step forward and two steps back
It was surprisingly good relationship therapy for me and my girlfriend to play in cooperation with each other in a kart game for once, but I do miss the transformation aspect of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. The tracks felt far more vertical and dynamic with this mechanic, and considering that Mario Kart 8 has also jumped on the anti-gravity bandwagon, I have to wonder why it was omitted in the latest Sonic kart racing game. It gives Team Sonic Racing a slightly dated feeling akin to older kart games.
I also have misgivings about using wisps (remember Sonic Colours?) to symbolise power ups since it took some memorisation to learn their purpose. For example, you pick up a white wisp, but what does it mean? Is it a projectile? No it’s a boost. Okay now a blue one. Is it a shield? Nah it’s a block. Not a major issue since you instinctively remember their functions eventually, but I should note they failed to contribute to the gameplay as much as I hoped. In general, the power-ups feel a little ineffectual, and I gave mine to my team mates most of the time.
Drive through the red arch for a score multiplier, drive through the yellow for score. Do you have any idea how hard this is????
At least I can tell that Team Sonic Racing really wants me to feel rewarded in my driving skill. Rewards become substantially more generous at higher levels, but there are also single player events designed to train the player. These races are time trials in things like drifting while collecting rings, or a particular favourite of mine where you must dodge through little robots to learn evasive driving.
They are superb little distractions to sharpen your edge on the competition, but I must say that the requirements for gold medal, heck even for silver medal, are a little steep. I am the laziest achievement hunter in the world, but at one point in the career I needed a silver medal to unlock the next set of races. Not cool.
Kart racing delight
Team Sonic Racing fell short in a few areas for me mainly because I feel like Sumo Digital was really giving Mario Kart a serious run for their money at one point. Don’t get me wrong, I really love Nintendo. I just feel like this game made unnecessary sacrifices for the sake of the whole team racing dynamic, and I think Sumo Digital would be wise to reintroduce them in coming titles.
As it stands, I can still see myself returning over and over again to Team Sonic Racing for the rest of this year at least because there is still tons of sweet kart mods to unlock, and so many gold and platinum medals keeping me awake at night. This is an essential game for Sonic fans, and a lovely quantum of solace for the kart lovers that feel like their first choices are growing a bit long in the tooth.
Number of tracks

Selection of characters

Inconsistent difficulty spikes
Awful story
Ignores strengths from previous game

Alcatel Three assessment: Extraordinarily common
Within the final yr or so, the way in which we view “affordable” handsets has been altering. Now not are these gadgets riddled with compromises compared to flagship telephones. Immediately, a price range cellphone can nonetheless supply unbelievable efficiency, a slew of recent options, and even a fantastic digicam. Simply check out the current Realme Three Professional as a main instance.
The Alcatel Three is anticipated to promote for roughly $180, or ~140 kilos, which places it firmly within the “extremely affordable” camp. Sadly, the precise efficiency harkens again to inexpensive handsets of outdated.
To search out out what we imply, preserve studying Android Authority‘s Alcatel Three assessment.
About this assessment: We examined the Alcatel Three for about 1.5 weeks previous to scripting this assessment, and used it as a every day driver for a number of of these days. The system was offered by Alter company, on behalf of Alcatel. It had the February 2019 safety patch put in.
Alcatel Three assessment: The large image
Alcatel is not any stranger to creating price range and mid-range handsets. Final yr’s Alcatel Three was a considerably compelling cellphone, save for the paltry 16GB of storage. This yr’s mannequin was introduced alongside two others. The vary, which incorporates the Alcatel 1s, 3, and 3L, caters to just about each price range.
The 2019 Alcatel Three continues to be very a lot an entry-level system, however it’s positioned on the higher finish of the portfolio and seeks to punch above its weight, with premium options comparable to face unlock and a full-view display screen. Regardless of its plastic building, the cellphone has a placing design that belies its worth. This makes it an interesting piece of hardware.
To this reviewer’s thoughts, nonetheless, it struggles to maintain up with a number of the competitors.
What’s within the field?
Alcatel 3
Fast begin information
Charger (plug and wire)
3.5mm wired headphones
A normal providing right here, which is in fact completely superb at this worth. The inclusion of headphones is actually welcome. And so they’re truly the old school earphones, somewhat than earbuds you must drive into your head. As somebody with exceptionally small ears, that is very welcome.
Design
Plastic construct
82.2 p.c screen-to-body ratio
Micro-USB
As I mentioned earlier, this factor truly seems to be fairly darn good for the value. The again panel is placing, with a beautiful, reflective coloration gradient, and pleasingly curved edges. Whereas it seems to be just like extra premium handsets, it’s actually plastic. In my quick time with the cellphone it has already picked up quite a lot of small scratches, so it might not look fairly as good in a yr’s time.
On the entrance, there’s an unexciting notched show, with a 19.5:9 facet ratio. Regardless of the notch and skinny edge bezels, the system solely achieves an 82.2 p.c screen-to-body ratio as a consequence of a somewhat pronounced chin.
That blight apart, the Alcatel Three seems to be and feels higher than the plastic construct would counsel. It has a very slim profile, because of some extraordinarily curved corners, and the sub-six-inch display screen. This makes it a sensible choice for many who don’t like lugging round cumbersome handsets, which is one thing lots of people I do know need — particularly at this lower cost level.
The Micro-USB port, discovered on the underside of the system, is disappointing. That is turning into anachronistic even on cheaper gadgets, and it damages the future-proofing of the system. Maybe Alcatel saved a couple of dollars right here to maintain the system inexpensive, however future compatibility goes to turn out to be a difficulty — if not now, then actually in a few years. Assume onerous about whether or not this can be a compromise you’re proud of. In the event you don’t plan to make use of the port for a lot apart from charging (slowly), it might not be a difficulty for you.
The NFC radio is welcome, because it’s lacking from equally priced telephones just like the Redmi Notice 7 and dearer 7 Professional. That’s an enormous promoting level at this worth, and is a must have for lots of people.
The fingerprint sensor can also be properly positioned across the again within the middle and this makes it a really fast option to unlock the cellphone. Face unlock is equally fast, although it isn’t probably the most safe possibility. There’s additionally house for a microSD card subsequent to the SIM to supply as much as 128GB of additional house.
Show
5.94-inch IPS LCD
HD+ 1,560 x 720
19.5:9 facet ratio
Whereas 5.94 inches will doubtless be loads for a lot of (and wouldn’t have been uncommon not way back), it feels just a little cramped, with the decrease decision and the rounded corners. That is significantly noticeable in the event you’re coming from a tool with extra actual property.
This factor seems to be like Thanos.
To be truthful, 720p is a typical decision for a tool at this worth, and the display screen seems to be detailed and sharp sufficient for my liking. Consuming media is a nice expertise, although the notch will probably be divisive. That mentioned, the auto brightness appears just a little aggressive and makes the display screen look somewhat dim a variety of the time; it’s higher turned off.
The microUSB included down the underside of the system is disappointing.
Efficiency
Snapdragon 439
Adreno 505
3GB RAM
32GB storage
In the case of efficiency, this system actually chugs just a little. The Snapdragon 439 chipset is admittedly not optimized for gaming with its Adreno 505 GPU, and which means decrease fps in higher-end video games. That mentioned, you’ll be superb with 2D titles and less-demanding video games. Atomik: RunGunJumpGun performed properly. You may play PUBG on the bottom settings with occasional body drops, so long as you’ll be able to sit via the extraordinarily lengthy loading instances. Whilst you may not anticipate a cellphone at this worth to be a gaming beast, a number of the competitors at this worth does it higher.
On Antutu, the Alcaltel Three scored 80430, which put its CPU efficiency forward of 16 p.c of customers and the GPU forward of seven p.c of customers. I attempted turning the quantity down throughout one of many checks and it took an excellent few seconds to register.
The mid-range processor additionally means navigating the UI will be gradual going at instances. When booting the cellphone up from totally powered down, it takes an excellent 30 seconds for the icons to look on the house display screen. As you doubtless gained’t be powering your system down typically, this isn’t that large of a deal, but it surely offers some clue as to wider efficiency total.
Apps take some time to load in lots of instances. Scrolling via media wealthy feeds by way of the browser or a social media app will not be as easy an expertise as different gadgets. Extra egregious is the perceptible delay ready for the keyboard to pop up once you hit a textual content field. Multi-window multitasking works, however is once more very gradual.
Extra egregious is the perceptible delay ready for the keyboard
The mixture of restricted efficiency, low decision, slim facet ratio, and curved edges makes a variety of different day-to-day duties tiresome. Signing into PUBG was a comedy of errors: after coming into my password into Fb, I’d need to hit the again button to cover the keyboard as a result of it was blocking an excessive amount of of the display screen. So I’d try this, and nothing would occur. Assuming it hadn’t registered my command, I’d hit again once more, solely to then be taken again to the earlier display screen as soon as the primary contact lastly registered. This occurred thrice. (Which, granted, is as a lot a testomony to my lack of endurance as the rest.)
You are able to do largely the whole lot, however going past primary duties is irritating and much from optimum. The actual downside is you will get a lot better for the same worth. The Realme Three Professional and Redmi Notice 7 are considerably faster to carry out on a regular basis duties with a lot bigger screens, and that makes the entire expertise far superior.
Digicam
Rear: 13MP f/2.Zero main, 5MP depth sensor
Entrance: 8MP
The digicam is distinctly common. Across the again, you’re getting a 13MP f/2.Zero lens backed up by a 5MP depth sensor. Auto focus struggles with excessive close-ups, so shallow depth of area results aren’t simple to attain.
That mentioned, common digicam efficiency from the rear shooter is okay, and photographs look superb because of first rate distinction and a few punchy (although inconsistent) colours.
Upon shut inspection, you may discover the shortage of element. That is most obvious in the event you blow up the picture and look at gadgets within the background. Auto-exposure struggles lots in sunny circumstances, inflicting some pictures to finish up somewhat washed out. I skilled a few cases the place the saturation was jacked up too excessive in post-processing, which damage the ultimate picture.
Auto publicity struggles lots in sunny circumstances.
The host of cool results, which embody mild tracing and handbook mode, are very welcome. Sadly, the portrait mode actually doesn’t maintain up and critically struggles with edge detection. It nearly seems to be prefer it’s going for a very completely different impact in some instances — like a hazy dreamlike aesthetic. It’s not ugly, but it surely’s not proper! Low-light efficiency struggles, as is commonplace for a tool this inexpensive.
The front-facing digicam sports activities a decent 8MP sensor at f/2.0. Selfies don’t come out nice in any respect, sadly. Publicity points are pronounced and over-sharpening provides to the difficulty. Images from the entrance digicam are serviceable, although, so long as you aren’t too fussy about filling your Instagram feed with lovely selfies.
As for video, the rear digicam is able to capturing 1080p footage at 30fps, whereas the entrance manages 720p at 30fps. Personally, that’s an enormous deal breaker, as vlogging is among the fundamental issues I exploit my Android system for. It’s possible you’ll really feel otherwise.
Maybe the most important downside of each cameras, although, is simply how lengthy it takes to open the app once you hit the icon. Worse, how lengthy it takes to take a photograph once you hit the shutter button. You may’t depend on this cellphone to rapidly take a snap of one thing attention-grabbing and it makes the expertise much less gratifying as a complete.
As a complete, digicam efficiency is middling. I’ve seen worse, however I’ve additionally seen higher.
Software program
Android 8.1.Zero Oreo
I actually needed this system to get a win in not less than one class. Sadly, this space is one other important misstep. The Alcatel Three is working Android 8.1.0. With Android Q simply across the nook, we are able to anticipate this to be two generations outdated in a matter of months. Alcatel hasn’t mentioned if the three will obtain an replace to Pie or Q.
It’s not a very inventory model of Oreo, both. The customizations to the notification tray are instantly apparent. Numerous the Fast Settings have scrolling textual content, which is greater than just a little distracting. It’s important to swipe to the left or proper to get to your notifications as soon as the shade is pulled down. Swipe proper and the animation nonetheless performs to the left.
Apart from that, the adjustments are stored pretty minimal. It simply makes you marvel why we didn’t get a inventory model of Android within the first place.
The Alcatel Three is working Android 8.1.0, which places it manner behind the instances.
It’s a large disgrace as a result of a lite-and-up-to-date model of Android — like Android One — would do wonders on a tool like this. That’s much more of a missed alternative given that is precisely what you’d be getting on a Nokia cellphone just like the 5.1 Plus or 6.1 (I’ll get to why that could be a pertinent comparability in a second).
Battery
The battery weighs in at 3,500mAh, which is pretty common. Mixed with the older Android model, this actually isn’t something to put in writing dwelling about. You’ll doubtless wish to prime up some juice by the top of a protracted day of average-to-heavy utilization. It’s just like what you’d get from mid-range handsets of earlier generations, which is sort of the working theme.
The Micro-USB ensures this isn’t the quickest to system to cost both. The Realme Three Professional made the identical mistake, however not less than that got here with quick charging. That is only a blast from the previous that we might have completed with out. In fact, this protects pennies — which is hopefully handed to the buyer — however gadgets just like the Nokia X5 handle to supply USB-C for much less.
Audio
Single bottom-firing speaker
3.5mm headphone jack
Sound doesn’t truthful a complete lot higher than the opposite departments. There’s a single bottom-firing speaker, and it’s less than a lot. We’re used to tinny sound on inexpensive handsets, however usually that’s solely obvious throughout media playback. The notifications sounded just a little muffled too (although I’ll admit to nitpicking at this level).
This gained’t be a tool you should use to fill a room with sound. Fortunately, there’s a headphone jack, and I appreciated that it’s on the highest of the system — extra of that please! As talked about, there are some first rate headphones thrown in for good measure. Name high quality is simply superb, and I had no points with sign both.
Specs
Show IPS LCD 5.94 inches 720x1560p Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 Adreno 505 RAM 3GB Storage 32GB MicroSD As much as 128GB Cameras 13MP, f/2.0, 1.12µm 5MP depth sensor 8MP, f/2.Zero selfie digicam Battery 3,500mAh Wi-fi charging No Water resistance No SIM Hybrid Twin SIM Software program Android 8.1.Zero with customized pores and skin Dimensions and weight 151.1×69.7x8mm 145g Colours Blue-purple gradient, Black-blue gradient
Worth for the cash
Not each cellphone balances the worth equation, and the Alcatel Three suggestions the scales within the flawed route. Your cash would go a lot additional with a Realme Three Professional, or Redmi Notice 7 — although they value just a little extra. At roughly the identical worth, the Realme Three is healthier. Even the Realme 2 Professional, if you’ll find one, can be a greater funding. The identical goes for the Nokia 5.1 Plus which I introduced up a couple of instances, in addition to the Nokia 6.1, the Motorola One, the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite, and others.
The Alcatel Three isn’t but accessible however is anticipated to promote for roughly $180 or 140 kilos.
Alcaltel Three assessment: The decision
There’s nothing critically flawed with this cellphone. It seems to be good regardless of the plastic, and the inclusion of NFC and bevy of digicam modes are welcome. The small dimension will go well with some, and people simply in search of a basic-but-handsome handset doubtless gained’t be too upset — I get that not everyone seems to be prepared to hunt on-line for much less available hardware.
Sadly, this system falls wanting the competitors in quite a lot of key areas. The smaller, low-res display screen feels cramped, efficiency is sub par, it makes use of Micro-USB, and it’s working an older model of Android. All this stuff have been completed higher on equally priced handsets. This provides as much as an expertise that’s irritating as quickly as you attempt to do greater than probably the most primary duties.
In the event you care in any respect about efficiency and also you’re prepared to buy round, I’d say to maintain trying. Whereas I don’t dislike the Alcatel 3, it’s a tough go for me and never a tool I can wholeheartedly suggest.

Product Code: BOXDC3217IYE
Brand: Intel
Warranty: 3 Years Warranty
View details on manufacturer’s website
Design and Features The DC3217BY comes with Intel’s D33217CK motherboard, which measures just 4-by-4 inches and includes a non-removable ultra low voltage 1.8GHz Core i3-3217U processor and the QS77 Express chipset. The board is small, so there’s not much room for expansion but Intel managed to squeeze in two mini-PCIe slots (one half length and one full length) and two SODIMM memory slots. The NUC supports up to 16GB of dual channel DDR3 1066/1333 MHz RAM but you have to supply your own memory as it is not included in the kit.
Optional components include an mSATA solid state drive and a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth radio, neither of which are included in the kit. However, Intel was kind enough to send along one of their 180GB SSD 520 Series drives and a Centrino Advanced N-6235 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card for testing purposes. The recommended list price for the drive is $189 and the Wi-Fi card will run you around $25, so you’re looking at a cost of over $500 for a fully configured NUC. Additionally, you’ll have to supply your own power cord as one does not ship with the kit for some reason.
The NUC chassis measures 4.4 x 4.6 x 1.5 inches (HWD) and weighs around 17 ounces. It sports a glossy maroon cover with a maroon power switch on top. The front of the matte black base holds one of three available USB 2.0 ports. The other two are around back, nestled between a power jack an HDMI port, and a Thunderbolt port. Oddly, neither version of the NUC supports USB 3.0, and only the DC 3217IYE offers an integrated LAN port. Graphics power comes by way of Intel’s integrated Graphics HD 4000 solution, and there’s a built-in wireless antenna.
Assembly and Performance There’s not much assembly required with this kit other than installing RAM, the Wi-Fi card, and the mSATA drive. All you’ll need is a regular Philips screwdriver to remove the four screws that hold the cover in place and a smaller jeweler’s Philips screwdriver to install the internal components. Once the cover is removed you have to remove two small screws located near the mini PCIe slots. Install the Wi-Fi card first in the half-height slot on the bottom, attach the two antenna leads, and secure it with one of the screws. Next, install the mSATA drive in the full-height slot, above the Wi-Fi card, and secure it with the remaining screw. Then, install the memory modules. I used one 4GB DIMM, which snaps into place just as a notebook module does (in fact, the 4GB of RAM came from a notebook).
After replacing the cover it was time to fire up the NUC. I used an external USB DVD drive to install Windows 7, which went off without a hitch. The NUC also supports Windows 8 as well as Linux based operating systems such as Fedora, Ubuntu, and OpenSUSE. Once the OS was installed I went to Intel’s NUC website and downloaded the chipset and wireless drivers. The entire process took less than 30 minutes from start to finish.
The NUC’s Core i3 CPU, mSATA drive, and 4GB of RAM produced an impressive PCMark 7 score of 3704, surpassing the HP Pavilion P7-1235 and the Acer Aspire AM3470-UC30P. It’s important to note that this particular test favors solid state drives, which accounts for the NUC’s high score.
On the Cinebench R11.5 test, which gauges raw CPU power, the NUC couldn’t keep pace with the Core i5 powered Giada i53 Mini PC or the AMD A8-5500 powered HP P7-1235. Its Handbrake encoding score of 2:32 was relatively slow but still managed to beat the Aspire by one second.
The NUC’s HD Graphics 4000 GPU is more than capable of delivering smooth HD video but it’s not geared for gaming. Although its entry level 3DMark 11 score of 855 was higher than the Acer Aspire M3970G-UW10P (709) it paled in comparison to HP P7-1235 (1,732) and the Aspire AM3470 (1,567). Furthermore, the NUC managed a paltry 19 fps on the Crysis DX10 medium quality test and an even worse 4 fps on the high quality test.
Conclusion For home user’s, the Intel Next Unit of Computing is an ideal home theater PC solution that delivers third generation Core i3 processing and wireless connectivity to media storage and DLNA enabled devices. Moreover, its tiny form factor and VESA mounting capabilities are tailor made for businesses that rely on digital signage for things like hospitality kiosks and big screen advertising. Granted, it’s not going to replace the desktop as your everyday workhorse, but it’s not designed for that purpose, at least not yet. The lack of USB 3.0 support is odd considering the NUC is all about advanced technology, and it is relatively expensive given its performance and expansion limitations. That said, the NUC is neat little box with loads of potential. It’ll be interesting to see how it evolves and if it will indeed become the future of computing.

Stand Pc Workstation
Personal computer Workstation Requirements
Tearing my hair out here. Far more pc workstations are located on all floors of the Central Library for library users’ study purposes. Our previous-generation test machine was equipped with two Xeon 5680 six-core CPUs based on Intel’s preceding generation Westmere-EP architecture running at a clock speed of 3.33 GHz. It delivers the graphics overall performance and top quality demanded by numerous CAD, media, and entertainment applications. Maintain in thoughts that on most laptops, the CPU, RAM and hard drive can be removed and replaced with an upgrade, unlike a video card. SolidWorks strives to bring worth to the market with solution enhancements that will let users to maximize overall performance on top hardware platforms such as Dell. When I think of Rare, what pops into my mind is all the lovely memories I had playing their iconic games like Battletoad, Donkey Kong Country, and the amazing Perfect Dark. Nowadays, Rare is part of Microsoft long list of owned studios, and have been working on numerous Xbox exclusives since the early days of 2002 including the Kinect Rivals, creating the console avatars and so on. There have been some recent games, but nothing to truly remind us of the good old era of Banjo Kazooie for example until Sea of Thieves was announced in 2015. A title focused on cooperative multiplayer with pirate-themed action-adventure gameplay mechanics, typical Rare-style artistic direction… I’m not going to lie, I’ve been really eager to see what one of my favourite developers have cooked up and if it’s up to the expectations of such a studio.
Sea of Thieves is a game that promises to live the pirate life, full of adventures and loot. It’s in a dusty tavern that your story begins, on a random island which will serve as a hub for your many adventures in the sea with – or without – a crew. The world of developed by Rare consists of about sixty islands, which you’ll visit via quests and mainly find treasure in underwater shipwreck holds or on beaches, hidden in the warm sand, and much more in a shared online mini server instance that fits up to 16 players. Once a loot is collected, it is mandatory to bring it to one of the outposts of the card for resale, which earns money and reputation points to the squad.
Those outputs or hubs are considered are like small towns – lacking life though – in which you equip your equipment, stock on three main resources including bananas for health, cannonballs for your cannons and wooden planks for ship repairs. Once that is done, you choose your adventure (called voyage) via offered quest from one of three “Trading Companies” in the hub (or factions if you want). The Gold Hoarders are the most obvious ones and send you out to islands to dig buried wealth, while the Order of Souls has you hunt for gravesites of dead pirates to get their skulls. The last faction is the Merchant Alliance which has you become a sort of delivery man for certain animals, or have you capture these same creatures to bring them in. And so as in any real treasure hunt game, it will take some sense of direction to find the red cross on the map, that obviously represents the actual location where it is said to dig, or sometimes it’s about riddles written to decipher, using logic and observation to follow a path and find your objectives.
When it comes to the technical aspect of Sea of Thieves, I’d say Rare nailed it with probably one of the most beautiful rendering of water and the sea in video games (better even than Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag). The rest of the game has the typical cartoon-ish artistic direction found in pretty much all Rare games, with gentle curves and bright colours, perfectly representing the calm of a sunny sea as to the chaos of a violent storm. With the simple pleasure of observing the horizon behind its rudder adds an excellent work of sound design, with wave splashes but also a fun soundtrack that is based on many pirate and sailor songs. But the game is limited to 30fps on the Xbox One which is a shame, although the display can reach up to 4K on Xbox One X. My issue is that the absence of a “performance” mode in 1080p at 60 frames per second on Xbox One X is regrettable, considering it’s the only console platform the game will be running on. On the PC side, however, the graphical options are numerous and offer the possibility of running Sea of Thieves on rather modest configurations like even a Surface Pro 3 (the mid-range i5 edition with 8GB of RAM to be precise).

Now for those of you excited to get this game in hope to fulfil your pirate fantasies, there’s something major you need to understand which I already mentioned above: the game is mainly a coop title. Even if it is possible to start the adventure alone with a smaller boat, it is multiplayer with other players that give the title a particularly interesting coop experience if you have friends with the game, or hopefully, find strangers that are willing to use their microphones. With no on-screen direction like minimaps or path indicators, taking off on a galleon requires some coordination and a lot of communication between every four members to be able to sail, tasking each one of you to certain actions. You can all help raise the anchor, but eventually, only one will have to main the helm, while another reads the map and compass to make sure you’re heading the right way, and the rest of the team mains the guns or controls the sails to take advantage of the wind. Obviously, it’s not easy to do that with random strangers, so your experience will be different all the time if you’re not sticking to the same crew, and it might not be a fun game in some occasions. In general, the social aspect of Sea of Thieves shines easily. Certain objects such as the maps or even compass can be seen by all your friends, which helps all to agree and help together. For those without mics, you have at your disposal a wheel of expressions in kind of a complete set of sentences to shout like “I’m on the island” or “I’m back on the ship”, plus another kind of animated emotes like clapping, dancing, etc.
Unlike other multiplayer games that reward players with an experience system that gives you access to more powerful weapons and improved skills, Sea of Thieves has money and reputation levels per faction. These levels grant you access to both cosmetics upgrades and more difficult contracts with higher rewards. Sadly, all these new weapons to obtain do not do extra damage and a gilded wooden leg won’t make you run faster because everything earned is a purely visual upgrade with no RPG or stats elements to it. Which comes to the biggest issue of Sea of Thieves: it doesn’t feel like it has a purpose. This coop title is what I would like to say a large sandbox with no real end game to satisfy the most hardcore of players, thus Rare fell into a strange predicament: who is the target audience of Sea of Thieves? After spending hours doing numerous voyage, trying to hunt the Kraken and surviving enemy assaults, getting a mere hat may not be motivating for most players. Most of us have learned or got used to a feeling of progression that comes via levelling up or key accomplishments that upgrades our stats, which in this case is non-existent. Sea of Thieves in its current stance is a basic initial experience that will need to quickly change or get updated with other gaming mechanics because after 3 days I’m already bored.
Sea of Thieves was reviewed using an Xbox Play Anywhere downloadable code of the game provided by Microsoft. The game was tested on an Xbox One X and a PC running Windows 10 Pro, with a 4GB NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960 fitted on a 5th Generation Intel i7 4720HQ 3.2Ghz CPU and topped with 16GB of RAM, as well as a Surface Pro 3 for touchscreen gameplay. We don’t discuss review scores with publishers or developers prior to the review being published (click here for more information about our review policy).
Rare banks heavily on the journey you'll experience with Sea of Thieves, yet sadly the destination is confusing or might be a letdown for others. When I think of Rare, what pops into my mind is all the lovely memories I had playing their iconic games like Battletoad, Donkey Kong Country, and the amazing Perfect Dark.
