THE BUSINESS OF FILMMAKING – Why ‘The Oracle Machine’ Is A Great Value Proposition THE ORACLE MACHINE is both a graphic novel and the script for a live-action movie project. But movies can cost quite a bit, so movie-making becomes a business too, that usually must try give some kind of ROI (Return on Investment) to investors - be it emotional, financial, or preferably both.

Beyond the river DVD review
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”26363,26364,26365″][vc_column_text]A South African movie about a story with a lot of heart, a true story inspired Dusi Canoe marathon gold medalists Siseko Ntondini and Piers Cruickshanks. There has been a lot of local publicity around this movie’s release and if you didn’t get a chance to watch it at the cinema, then you now have a chance to watch it on DVD. I personally enjoyed the movie as it was a uniquely South African but memorable as the story would touch anyone.
There is also a book and documentary based on this story, you can access more information using the following link: https://beyondtheriver.co.za/
The movie is about Duma who a talented young man trapped by his surroundings and finds himself gravitating towards criminal activities. After too many escapes from the law, he finds an escape in an old passion of his, canoeing. He meets Steve at the worst time in in his life, while he is a nine-time Dusi gold medalist the pressure has taken its toll on his marriage which is on the verge of collapse.
Their passions for canoeing are both driven by their need to escape their pasts. Unexpectedly the two men find themselves attempting the three-day Dusi Canoe Marathon as a doubles pair. They must overcome their cultural differences to realise the dream they both desperately desire which requires them to work together. As expected the ending is predictable as it follows Siseko Ntondini and Piers Cruickshanks, who together won gold in the 2014 Dusi.

This film really showcases the acting talent we have here in South Africa and the grit our people have in overcoming adversity. It’s a fresh break away from superhero and multiple movie story arch’s that are forever building up and growing movie franchise universes. It’s an honest and raw story that still shows heroism without going over the top.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

The fictional birth of South African Rugby
CAST: Charlotte Salt, Andre Jacobs, Grant Swanby
DIRECTOR: Sean Else
THE STORY
1901, the height of the Anglo-Boer war. Kitchener, the commander of the Anglo forces, has instructed his men to burn the Boer farms, and take the women and children into concentration camps. This has caused an uprising from Boers in the Cape, who are not spared this treatment. Willem Morkel (Stian Bam) is a Cape revolutionist whose wife and baby are taken to one such camp, but during an ill-conceived attempt to free them, his baby gets shot and he gets captured. He is transported to the prisoner of war camp on St. Helena, and placed in the brutal camp reserved for Boer’s from the Cape, who are looked at as traitors to the British Crown. He is placed under the boot of Colonel Swannel (Grant Swanby), and waits to die, but when he witnesses brutality towards a young boy he has to stand up to this bully. He challenges the man, and his troops, to a game of rugby, knowing very little about the game. If he wins the boy lives, if he loses the boy dies. Enlisting the help of the men in the camp, who know as much about the game as he does, he also gets help from Finn Kelly (Patrick Connolly), an Irish man fighting with the Boers, to train his men as they prepare for the battle to end all their battles.

THE VERDICT
I will be completely honest upfront and say that I’m not a rugby fan. I don’t understand the game and simply don’t enjoy it. This is a little bit of a problem, considering that, at its heart, this is a sports film. It’s about rugby, the joy of it, the way it unifies people, even enemies, and the pure fight that is competitive sports. It’s very similar to other films of the same genre, The Longest Yard, 1974 and 2005, which were basically the same film and both about football, Mystery, Alaska, which featured ice hockey, or the Bakgat series, which also featured rugby, and can stand head and shoulders with the rest of them.
That said, you don’t need to be a rugby fan to enjoy this film, but it does help. The sport is front and centre the whole way through. The fact that the film is set in the time of Anglo Boer war is interesting, but ultimately unnecessary, since it really could have been set in several different eras with the same effect. The opening sequence is interesting though, and I had no idea that Boer war prisoners were held on St. Helena.
The performances are pretty good, across the board. Bam is sombre and troubled as a man that’s lost everything, in the worst possible way, but finds a new lease on life in the most unlikely of places. He comes across as a natural born leader, automatically stepping up to be the head of the men, even if he doesn’t want it. He organises them, gives them hope and faith, and ultimately gives them a reason to live again, even if his reason is elusive to him a lot of the time.
Other stand outs among the ensemble cast are Kelly as the English among the Afrikaners, though do not refer to him as English. He is Irish, and hates the English even more than the Boers do. He loves the game of rugby though, and can see the potential in an Afrikaner team, with their size and speed. He is one of the first to put the idea in Morkel’s head, and stand by him when the time comes. Another is Jaco Muller as Rot. He is the guy you go to, to get whatever you need, and he lives up to his name, being as resilient and slippery as his name suggests.
A special mention needs to be made of Swanby. While he is a little over the top a lot of the time, turning his ultimate villain into more of a caricature of a villain than an actual man, he does a good job of creating a character that is the antagonist against Morkel’s hero. He hates the Boers, Morkel especially, and is thrilled by the chance to, not only embarrass them, but to do so before putting a bullet in Morkel’s head. He also loves rugby, and is especially proud of his team, the guards who are the English team, even going so far as to have a star player, played by Rudy Halgryn, posted with him at the camp to keep his team competitive. This all leads to him taking the bet, but then playing dirty when he sees that the Afrikaans team might actually stand a chance. He is vile and cruel and ruthlessly wonderful.
While the film has a tendency to go a little far, especially the naming of the Afrikaans team, which was a bit of a stretch, and the sense that the viewer is supposed to believe that this is the real way that rugby came to SA, instead of a believable, yet somewhat out there, pleasant fiction, it is, at heart, a very good film. If you are a fan of sport centric films then Modder and Bloed, or Blood and Glory, as I’m sure the international release will be titled, is one you should probably go and see. It’s fun and interesting and hails to the rugby gods in pretty respectable fashion.
