Excerpt from this story from Smithsonian Magazine:
Long absent from Yosemite National Park, peregrine falcons are making a comeback with help from some unlikely allies: rock climbers.
Rock climbers and peregrine falcons could easily be at odds, since they both flock to the sheer granite cliffs of the 1,169-square-mile California park. The presence of climbers can disturb nesting falcons, and rock climbing is listed as a potential threat to the species. But instead, humans and birds have forged a unique partnership that has allowed peregrine falcons to flourish after decades of decline.
This week, the National Park Service and the Yosemite Conservancy provided an update on the peregrine falcon recovery within the park. In the spring of 2024, naturalists counted 17 breeding pairs—a nearly 113 percent increase from the eight pairs counted in 2009—as well as 15 nests and 25 chicks. Since 2009, 51 total nesting sites located within Yosemite have produced 385 baby birds.
“Peregrines are at the top of the food chain and the most susceptible to contamination,” says Frank Dean, president of Yosemite Conservancy, to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Sam Whiting. “So to have them bounce back to this degree is a sign of the health of the entire Yosemite ecosystem.”
Peregrine falcons are the world’s fastest animal, reaching speeds of up to 200 miles per hour when they dive from great heights to catch their prey. These majestic birds live on every continent except Antarctica, seeking out rocky cliffs to build their nests and raise their young.
Once abundant around the world, their numbers began to dwindle after World War II because of the use of pesticides like dieldrin, aldrin and DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane). Dieldrin and aldrin are toxic and killed the birds outright, while DDT weakened chicks’ eggshells, lowering their odds of survival.
At the behest of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, climbers once again scaled El Capitan writes the Mercury News’ Lisa M. Krieger—but this time, they collected samples of eggshells from the nest and brought them back down for testing.
The eggs were delicate and thin, so researchers decided the best course of action was to incubate them in a laboratory, then return the hatchlings to the nest. Rock climbers helped with this, too, much to the chagrin of the protective peregrine falcon parents: As the climbers carefully removed eggs or replaced chicks, the falcons dive-bombed them—one bird even struck a climber’s backpack.
“Just when I thought I was going to die, they would flare their wings above my neck and glide off, just inches from me,” says Ken Yager, one of the climbers who helped with the efforts and the founder of the Yosemite Climbing Association, to the Mercury News.
Yager’s story illustrates how climbers were willing to “risk all” to help the birds, as Rob Roy Ramey II, a biologist and climber who helped with the project, told Outside’s Ula Chrobak in 2018.

Ram Lalla Idol At Ayodhya Carved Out Of 2.5 Billion-Year-Old Black Granite
The idol of Ram Lalla or infant Lord Ram found a home on Monday with a Pran Pratishtha ceremony by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the new Ayodhya temple. The stone used to create the 51-inch idol is special black granite brought all the way from Karnataka.
"The stone is 2.5 billion years old," confirms HS Venkatesh, Director of the National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM), Bengaluru, the national facility that helped in testing the stone using physico-mechanical analysis. The NIRM is the nodal agency to test rocks for Indian dams and nuclear power plants.
Dr Venkatesh says, "The rock is highly durable and resistant to climatic variation and will sustain thousands of years in this subtropical zone with minimum maintenance."
Most granitic rocks formed when molten lava cooled down after the earth was formed. The granite is a very hard material.
The Ram Temple has been constructed using traditional architectural designs and highest quality stones, yet it incorporates modern science and engineering techniques to make it durable, says Union Science Minister Jitendra Singh. "It has been designed to last for more than 1,000 years," he adds.
The stone was chosen from the village Jayapura Hobli in Mysuru district, a region known for high quality granite mines.
The rock is dated to the pre-Cambrian era, which is estimated to have begun some four billion plus years ago. The earth is estimated to have originated some 4.5 billion years ago. The black granite rock from which the Ram Lalla statue has been sculpted has seen at least half or more of earth's history.
Early humans appeared on earth about 14 million years ago and the humans as we see today - the species Homo sapiens - are only 300,000 years old. Scientists estimate that life originated on earth some 4 billion years ago.
The stone was carved into a beautiful idol by 38-year-old Arun Yogiraj from Mysuru, who belongs to a family of five generations of sculptors. It took him about six months to craft the Ram Lala statue. Among his other well-known masterpieces is the 30-feet black stone statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at India Gate in Delhi.
The NIRM, which helped assess the granite block with its testing laboratories at Kolar Gold Fields, told Nripendra Misra, chairperson of the temple construction committee, that the rock was "massive, melanocratic and uniform in colour". The stone is fine-grained, hard, compact and has high compressive strength, tensile strength, bending strength, breaking strength and elasticity.
The rock's qualities make it amenable for any kind of carving, Dr Venkatesh says. "In addition the rock possess high density, low porosity and water absorption with high P wave velocity, it is devoid of any internal cracks and fractures."
The stone does not absorb water or react with carbon.

BERSERK!! BREAKTHROUGH!!
DISCLAIMER: This drabble contains mentions of abuse, violence, and implied Pokemon experimentation/death.
The junior lab assistant takes heavy, hesitant steps as he descends down Devon’s secret stairwells, punches complex passcodes into locked doors, and passes through soundproofed basement hallways. In his arms, the nervous scientist cradles a heavy crate loaded down with the capsules of so-called pest Pokemon: rock-devouring Arons and annoying Zubats from Granite Cave, along with pesky Wurmples from Petalburg Woods. Even though he know all of this was so, so wrong, he couldn’t defy that order from up top: catch as many as you can, and bring them to her. The Corporation that he previously adored had trapped him with this terrible assignment--if he showed any form of resistance, the brass could ruin his entire life.
Taking a deep breath, disgust and self-loathing bubbling deep in his stomach, the assistant finally arrives at the double-reinforced doors at the end of the underground hallway, the entrance to Devon’s most hidden laboratory. Recognizing his pale, shadow-shrouded face, the entryway slides open with a hiss, revealing her. The gleeful conductor of these terrible Pokemon tests, the demure, smiling figurehead of Devon’s public side, the brilliant, twisted mind...
ERIS EVANS.
She’s hunched over near her infernal creation: the reimagined ABSORBER, Infinity Energy converter and known extinguisher of life. Fully ensnared by her work, Eris doesn’t even acknowledge her latest assistant’s presence when he steps inside the darkened lab, the automatic doors sliding shut with finality behind him. No, Devon’s unofficial spokesperson looks nothing like her usual, carefully-maintained self: her lab coat is dirty and wrinkled, her purple hair is disheveled, and there are dark rings under her eyes, all signs of her near-total obsession with the machine before her. Sparks fly over her chipped fingernails as she deftly tinkers with some complex wiring.
“Put the crate down. We’ll load them shortly,” she orders without looking up, her callous tone making the assistant flinch. He stares down at the helpless Pokeballs within the box--there’s no way he can go through with this again, right? Is this job really worth so much...? The conflicted underling sets the crate down, stiffens his shoulders, and advances towards the turned back of his superior, drawing a Pokeball from his belt. It’s taken a while, but he’s finally made his decision.
“This has to stop, Eris,” he declares, finding what he hopes is a confident voice. “We can’t keep doing-”
CRACK!
Before the poor assistant can finish, Eris pulls herself to her feet, turns, and--with surprising speed--slaps him hard across the face. The assistant’s head snaps to the side, and he drops his Pokemon in shock, hand immediately flying to his tender cheek. For just a moment, Eris seems surprised by her overviolent reaction as well, but she recomposes herself quickly, a sneer curling her lips as she gets right in her underling’s face. Her stinging hand flies to his throat, his Adam's apple quivering under her palm. She doesn’t have to worry about maintaining her mask down here--this lab is her domain, and any insolence will be punished. Swiftly.
“...Who do you think you are, acting so bravely out of the blue? Hm?” she breathes, watching him wheeze in her grip. “I’m not surprised that you want to save these Pokemon. Weak replaceable trash tries to save his own kind--pathetic.”
Her amethyst eyes flicker down to the assistant’s abandoned Pokeball, a twisted smile playing on her lips. “I’ll let you play hero, you know. Volunteer your Pokemon in place of the others--that’s a noble sacrifice, don’t you think? We could extract lot of useful data from your friend...”
Despite his convictions, the assistant can’t bring himself to do that, shaking his head in protest, scrabbling at Eris’s uncompromising wrist. The wild scientist scoffs at his desperate reaction, the chilling sneer returning to her expression. “The original plan, then,” she decides coldly, finally pushing him away from her. However, before he can get his bearings, she slaps him again, sending his overwhelmed figure crashing to the floor, gasping for breath.
“Jeleva,” she mutters, and her Skuntank appears at her side with a hiss, beady eyes fixed on the fallen peon. “Keep watch and see that he doesn’t interfere further, will you?”
With her Pokemon looming over the shuddering assistant, Eris picks up the box herself with a grunt and begins to prime the Absorber for launch. It doesn’t take long for her to set everything up for the testing phase--another potential glimpse into the future of Infinity Energy. With the capsule crate settled beneath the imposing machine, the warped scientist takes an anticipatory breath...and activates the switch.
The Absorber hums and crackles, a beam of blindingly luminous energy shooting up from the box of Pokemon. Within seconds, all the lights in the lab shine impossibly bright, impressive waves of heat also rolling forth from the futuristic structure. The assistant shields his eyes and scrambles away, but Eris stands tall behind the controls with a blissful smile on her face, her eyes shut tightly. This moment--with unchecked energy flying around the room and limitless power crackling in her veins--is everything.
Eris feels like she could exist in this high forever, but as always, her time detached from reality is much too short. When she opens her eyes again, all the lights in the lab have blown out, sparks raining feebly from the fixtures. The Absorber, while longer lasting than its last prototype, has come to a groaning stop, eerily silent and smelling strongly of smoke. Eris steps away from the control panel, waving away fumes and glancing briefly over at her stony-faced assistant and the ever-vigilant Jeleva. After today’s outburst, she has no problem kicking him out to the Rustboro curb, yet another analytical soul who just couldn’t keep up with her.
Despite the chaos inside the hidden lab, despite how the Absorber had singed her hair, how her assistant had scratched desperately at the back of her hands...Eris can’t help but smile. Devon would be pleased to hear that her latest prototype had the greatest (and longest-lasting) energy output so far. To the smiling Hoenn megacorp, it didn’t really matter what Eris had to do to complete their ambitious project. After all, they knew what they were getting into when they hired the former Galactic Commander.
Scientific progress. Pushing the envelope forward towards a brighter future, a brilliant tomorrow for everybody.
At any cost.

Unless radon gas is discovered in a home inspection, most people remain blissfully unaware that rocks like granite, metal ores, and some soils contain naturally occurring sources of radiation. In most cases, low levels of radiation are not a health concern. But some scientists and engineers are concerned about even trace levels of radiation, which can wreak havoc on sensitive equipment. The semiconductor industry, for instance, spends billions each year to source and "scrub" ultra-trace levels of radioactive materials from microchips, transistors and sensitive sensors.
Now chemists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have developed a simple and reliable method that holds promise for transforming how ultra-trace elements are separated and detected. Low levels of troublesome naturally occurring radioactive elements like uranium and thorium atoms are often tucked among valuable metals like gold and copper. It has been extraordinarily difficult, impractical, or even impossible, in some cases, to tease out how much is found in samples of ore mined across the globe.
Yet sourcing materials with very low levels of natural radiation is essential for certain types of sensitive instruments and detectors, like those searching for evidence of currently undetected particles that many physicists believe actually comprise most of the universe.

Proportional Examination of Pf Mechanical Composition of Concrete Produced with Washed and Unwashed Gravel-Iris Publishers
Authored by Salvador KA*

Abstract
Concrete is a very important material in the Nigerian construction industry as over 90% of her storey buildings are made from reinforced concrete. Local gravel is being increasingly used as coarse aggregate in place of the more expensive crushed granite in the production of concrete in parts of the country where it is found. Hence, this study aims at comparing the mechanical properties of concrete produced with washed and unwashed gravel to identify the most suitable aggregate for concrete. The use of two types of course aggregates for different works is examined in this study. Typical strength concrete is being made from various aggregates and their impact on various characteristics to the subsequent concrete. Compressive strength is the most vital property of concrete. In this paper, two forms of coarse aggregates washed gravel and unwashed gravel were utilized. Sharp sand is the fine aggregate. Initial laboratory examination was carried out to establish the appropriateness of utilizing the aggregates for construction purpose. Particle size distribution (sieve analysis) and slump test were investigated. Mix ratio (1:2:4 & 1:1.5:3) was used for this work and mix structures were analyzed by absolute weight technique. A total of 25 cubes (150×150×150mm) were cast to permit the compressive strength to be observed at 7, 14 and 21 days. Test results revealed that concrete produced from unwashed gravel has better workability than washed gravel. Higher compressive strength at all periods was observed with concrete produced from washed gravel aggregate. Compressive strength patterns were suggested as a result of age at curing.

Introduction
Concrete is a vital material in the Nigerian construction industry as over 90% of her storey buildings are made from reinforced concrete [1]. Building structures with the right materials and proper strength characteristics would eliminate the incidences of collapsed buildings and structures in Nigeria [2]. In the same vein, in an attempt to reduce the high cost of providing housing in Nigeria, researchers are searching for less expensive alternatives to the traditional materials employed in the construction industry. Thus, local gravel is being increasingly used as coarse aggregate in place of the more expensive crushed granite in the production of concrete in parts of the country where it is found [3]. Hence, this study will focus on comparative studies on the mechanical properties of concrete produced with washed and unwashed gravel. Concrete is a stone-like material obtained by designing a carefully proportioned mixture of cement, sand, and gravel or other aggregates and water to harden in forms of the shape and dimensions of the desired structure [4]. They further stressed that aggregate is one of the important constituents in concrete, which affects strength development. Although strength depends upon many parameters such as water/concrete (w/c) ratio, aggregate gradation, aggregate size and shape, cement quality, mixing time, mix ratio, curing etc., but this study has concentrated only on the comparative performance on mechanical properties of concrete produced with washed and unwashed gravel. The study of Sharmin, Ahmed, Ahmed, & Lubna [4] recognizes that the physical characteristics of Natural (uncrushed aggregates) and artificial (crushed aggregates) as two types of coarse aggregates normally found. They however stressed that 40mm-downgraded natural stones are designated as uncrushed aggregates and that above 63 mm is termed as boulders or gravels. Boulders or gravels are broken down below 40mm size to prepare crushed aggregates. Uncrushed aggregates are semi angular or rounded, but crushed aggregates are angular. Strength being the most important property of concrete determines the quality of concrete [2]. This strength is ultimately dependent on the choice and type of aggregate. Gravels are formed from natural weathering of parent rocks and eventual transportation of the weathered products by wind and erosion. They are obtained by dredging from pit, lake, river and seabed. Their classification is usually as those having an upper (D) sieve size larger than 4mm wherein the combination of d and D indicates whether the gravel is single sized or graded (BS EN 12620). Bigger sizes can be described as pebbles, cobbles or boulders [1]. Gravels are commonly round in shape which gives rise to a lower quantity of cement paste to about 4-5% in concrete production.
Salau & Busari [5] agree with Naoum SG [6] on their study on the size of aggregate that will improve the properties of concrete and concluded that the use of quarry dust and 20mm granite improved the concrete strength by 34% over the strength produced by concrete with sand and gravel of 28mm maximum size. Srinivas K [7] undertook particle size distribution analysis, slump test and compressive strength on hardened concrete in exploiting the economics of gravel as a substitute to granite in concrete production. They found out that a higher composition of gravel significantly improves concretes’ consistency property while greater proportions of granite do significantly enhance compressive strength. Also reported that sources of gravel greatly influence the compressive, flexural, and split-tensile strength of concrete. The high cost of conventional building materials is a major factor affecting housing delivery in Nigeria. This has necessitated research into alternative materials of construction. This aspect has been the major focus of many researchers [1,3,4,8-10]. Some of the earlier studies returned a positive relationship between the composition of concrete materials and their strength while others showed a negative relationship. For instance, Olanipekun, Olusola, & Ata [9] compare concrete properties using coconut shell and palm kernel shell as coarse aggregates. This paper presents the results of an investigation carried out on the comparative cost analysis and strength characteristics of concrete produced using crushed, granular coconut and palm kernel shells as substitutes for conventional coarse aggregate in gradation of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The results of the tests showed that the compressive strength of the concrete decreased as the percentage of the shells increased in the two mix ratios. However, concrete obtained from coconut shells exhibited higher compressive strength than palm kernel shell concrete in the two mix proportions. Likewise, Chen, Yen, & Chen [8] investigates the use of building rubbles as recycled aggregates using rubble collected from damaged and demolished structures. The study shows that building rubble could be transformed into useful recycled aggregate through proper processing. Using unwashed recycled aggregate in concrete will affect its strength. The effect will be more obvious at lower water/cement ratios. When the recycled aggregate was washed, these negative effects were greatly improved. This study will use the combination of literature review and practical testing in the laboratory to ascertain the effects of washed and unwashed gravel on concrete strength.
Salau & Busari [5] investigated the effect of different coarse aggregate sizes on the strength characteristics of lateralized concrete. The results of the tests showed that workability, density and compressive strength at constant water-cement ratio increase with the increase in the coarse aggregate particle size and also with curing age. As the percentage of laterite increases, there was a reduction in all these characteristics even with the particle size of coarse aggregate reduction due to loss from the aggregate-paste interface zone. This study will also determine the workability, density and compressive strength at a constant water-cement ratio in the laboratory. The work of Echeta, Ikponmwosa, & Fadipe, [3] compared the effect of partial replacement of granite with washed gravel on the characteristic strength and workability of concrete. The result shows that the workability of the concrete decreased with an increase in gravel content. Also, it was observed that for all curing ages, as the percentage replacement level increased, the compressive strength of the concrete increased to a maximum at 20 per cent replacement level. Thereafter, it decreased as the replacement level increased to 100%. Rahmani, Dehestani, Beygi, Allahyari, & Nikbin [11] also investigated the mechanical properties of concrete containing waste PET particles. The study found that fresh concretes containing PET particles presented lower workability and density. Concrete with PET particles demonstrated a lower modulus of elasticity and splitting tensile strength concerning conventional concrete. Also, the compressive and flexural strength show an ascending trend at the initial stages, however, they tend to decrease after a while. This study is however aimed at comparing the mechanical properties of concrete produced with washed and unwashed gravel in other to encourage the use of locally sourced gravel in construction works without reducing its quality and to minimize the cost of concrete within the study area.
Methods and Materials
A total of 32 number of 150mm cubes will be cast and observed for 7, 14, 21, and 28 curing days. The cubes will be weighed and crushed using the Techno test KB 1500kN capacity crushing machine in the Building Technology laboratory of Bells University of Technology, Ota. Compressive strength of concrete (7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 28 days) was determined using cube specimens as per British standard (BS-1881). Specimens with uncrushed and crushed aggregates were made. Weight batching of normal strength concrete 1:2:4 complying to a standardized prescribed concrete mix ST4 with an expected target strength of 20kN (BS 8500-1:2002 and BS 8500-2: 2002) and S2 slump will be attained with a predetermined water-cement ratio. Slump tests for concrete separately with unwashed and washed gravel with the same slump (38 mm or 1.5 inches) was performed to determine the w/c ratio. A Standard test method ASTM C127 was used for the determination of specific gravity and absorption of coarse aggregates. Standard test method ASTM C128 was used for the determination of specific gravity and absorption of fine aggregates. Standard test method ASTM C136 will be used for sieve analysis of fine and coarse aggregates (washed and unwashed).
Findings and Discussion
The result of the finding in Table 1, shows the grading curves obtained for the sand, washed gravel and unwashed gravel respectively. The results of preliminary tests on the concrete constituent materials showed that the washed coarse aggregate ranged in particle sizes from 4.3 to 19.0 mm. The gradation of the coarse aggregates and coefficient of uniformity (Cu) and Coefficient of curvature (Cc) following BS EN 933-1:2012 (Table 1, Figure 1).
Table 1:Physical Properties of the Aggregates.
The washed gravel is poorly graded but more uniformly graded because the coefficient of uniformity (Cu) is close to one and unwashed gravel is uniformly graded with a coefficient of uniformity (Cu) and Coefficient of curvature (Cc) approximately four and two respectively (see figure 1). However, the aggregates are suitable for construction project works. This study is similar to results obtained in Salau & Busari [5] (Tables 2,3).
Table 2:Slump Test.
Table 3:Slump Test.
The results of the slump test undertaken in Table 2 showed that all the mixes indicated true slump, irrespective of the type of gravel (Washed or Unwashed gravel). Using washed gravel, the concrete mix gave a slump value of 25 mm. The slump decreased to 5mm as the aggregate was changed to unwashed gravel. This could be adduced to the fact that the unwashed gravel contains more fines than the washed gravel hence the increased surface area that requires higher water demand to be more workable. Also, a comparison of the grading curves for unwashed gravel and washed gravel (see Figure 1) shows that the unwashed gravel particles are generally finer and contains some kind of impurities than those of washed gravels. For the same weight, therefore, the unwashed gravel possesses a greater surface area than the washed gravel. Hence more water is required to saturate the aggregate, and the result is that the workability of the concrete is reduced. Table 4 depicts the results of cube crushing at 7, 14, and 21 days respectively for four (4) different cubes of the same mix ratio and water-cement ratio (Table 4).
Table 4:Compressive Strength Test-Result Sheet (Washed Gravel-7days).
The table indicates that there is a slight increase in the weight of cubes after and before curing. This may be due to the presence of water in the cube specimen after curing. However, the crushing loads differ with the same cross-sectional area with minimum compressive stress of 8.44 N/mm2 – 11.11 N/mm2 indicating an average mean of 10.06 N/mm2. The difference in the compressive strength results may be due to inadequate tamping (rodding) and compaction of the specimen [12-25].
Conclusion
Based on the result of these findings. The following conclusion was drawn:
1. Gravels will require more water to be workable hence could be adduced for reduced compressive strength. However, unwashed gravel is not suitable for the construction of structural members in a multi-storey building.
2. From the sieve analysis, decomposable materials and other specks of dirt were observed in the gravel that could potentially affect the strength development of the concrete. Also, very fine particles were observed which could be silt, clay and humus.
3. Concrete prepared with washed gravel achieved better compressive strength than those made with unwashed gravels. This study validates the existing studies [1,5]. This reason may be as a result of the removal of decomposable materials and other specks of dirt were observed in the gravel during washing. Also, the findings will serve as practical importance to stakeholders in the construction industry (i.e., contractors, clients, government, policymakers, and so on) that could adequately adjust their implementation and development plans based on the results of the study.

Have You Tested Your Water Lately?
Radiation has already reached the United States from the tragic earthquake that hit Japan. While it will take a lot more time for the other debris from the tsunami to begin to wash up on shore, the air currents brought the radiation much quicker. This has caused a fury of purchases of iodine pills to help people feel like they can protect their thyroid from the potential overexposure to radiation
Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive mineral present in nature in certain types of rock like granite, shale, and sandstone. When groundwater comes in contact with these rock formations, the mineral can dissolve into the water and move on downstream. Wells drilled to draw water from underground sources where it flows through bedrock are more likely than other wells to contain higher levels of uranium than is recommended. Uranium isn't known as an inhaled toxin, it is an ingested toxin. Consuming too much uranium has harmful effects on the kidneys and bones
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been working to determine safe levels, and a 2011 document offering a provisional guideline suggests that 0.03mg/L may be a conservative level. The WHO says that the "guideline value for uranium remains provisional because of the difficulties in identifying an exposure level at which effects might be expected from the scientific data."
Despite the recommended safe levels, is there any level of uranium that we want in our water? The other side of uranium is its partner radon. When uranium breaks down radon gas is produced. Radon is the gas that collects in homes usually in basements and greatly increases the risk of lung cancer when inhaled. These two contaminants are not ones to mess with. Even when home interiors are protected from radon gas infiltration, well water high in uranium can bring it into the home and expose occupants to the gas during high water use activities like showering. If uranium is present, it is possible that radon is too, and either one is one contaminant too many.
Private water supplies like private wells are not regulated at all. Regular testing isn't required under state or federal law. If users want to know the concentration of uranium in a private water supply, they must have the water tested at their own expense. Tests to determine the presence of uranium in drinking water should be done by a laboratory certified for uranium testing. Not all laboratories are certified for uranium testing. Not all laboratories are certified to test for all drinking water contaminants.
Uranium, as well as radon, can be removed from drinking water. Because uranium is an ingested toxin, showering in water with high uranium concentrations isn't thought to be harmful other than the radon connection. Therefore installing a water treatment system on the tap for drinking and cooking is the only treatment necessary. The most common home water treatment systems on the market today that will remove uranium, radon, and other contaminants are the reverse osmosis system, distillation systems, systems using anion exchange, and special absorbent media (such as titanium dioxide)
While uranium in drinking water isn't necessarily high on the life-threatening list, it still is of concern. Just the same as the airborne radiation being of concern to most Americans, though it isn't in high enough concentrations to do damage, we want to be aware of it and know what is going on. The same is true of our drinking water. We want to know what is in it, at what levels, and if it is safe to drink.
There is no way to shut down all the factories, fertilizer companies, and farmers, and no way to keep the water from flowing over rocks. There will always be contaminants of some kind in almost all water sources. The fact remains, the local water treatment facility isn't going to be perfectly responsible for the health and well-being of its consumers. They simply cannot take all that responsibility. Therefore, we must make sure our water is clean, safe to drink, and an added perk, it can be great tasting as well. Being an informed consumer is half the battle - the other half is doing something about what we know to be true.
Once a system is installed, re-test the water to ensure the treatment system is working properly. After all, this is done and the tests meet our requirements, we can stop worrying about what else we are drinking in our water. Safe drinking water is very important and with the cutting-edge technology available today, there is simply no reason to not have great tasting healthy water the minute we turn on the tap.

Why 2CM Full Body Tiles HOT
In recent years, 2CM tiles have gradually attracted attention in the tiles industry, especially at the Bologna Exhibition last month, 2CM TILES are blooming everywhere. However, whether ceramic enterprises can make achievements in the field of 2CM Tiles s is the key to achieving brand differentiation. In this regard, the industry's well-known media "Ceramic Information" analyzes and discusses the Realgres tile brand, which has been in the field of 2CM iles for many years. The following is the original text:
2CM TILES, as a highly differentiated product segment, already has a stable market at home and abroad. In the Bologna Exhibition in Italy last month, various products coincided with the trend of "big + thick", and the business card of 2CM floor tiles at home and abroad was once again launched. At this time, someone in the ceramics industry issued the slogan of "Compared with stone, surpassing stone" in the ceramic industry, and it has the momentum to become a substitute for stone.
Is it true that full body 2CM tiles surpass stone, and whether 2CM Tiles are coming? According to recent developments in the ceramic industry about 2CM TILES, the mystery can be seen.

Why are 2CM Tile hot?
The reason has a lot to do with the current decline in the ceramic industry.
Chinese Ceramic companies have always been enthusiastic about exploring breakthroughs in the application of tiles. The current economic trend is declining, and Chinese ceramic companies have begun to seek to produce differentiated products to break through market restrictions. However, the cost of conversion is high and the effort spent has become a major limiting factor. According to the reporter of "Ceramic Information", there are not many ceramic companies specializing in the production of 2CM Tiles. Among them, Realgres Ceramics, as one of the pioneers of full body 2CM Floor Tiles, still focuses on the development and production of 2CM full body tiles.
In addition, China's current environmental protection pressure has become a promoter that cannot be ignored.
High-quality stone comes from the rough material in nature. The non-renewable raw stone makes high-quality stone resources increasingly depleted. With the strengthening of China's environmental protection management, various production areas have greatly restricted the mining of rough materials, resulting in increased difficulty in mining and increased transportation costs.
The above reasons have gradually reduced the supply of stone materials. The supply of conventional stone materials and material properties are difficult to meet market requirements. This has prompted stone buyers to have a keen interest in "full body 2CM Tiles" with superior performance.

How does full body 2CM Tile compare with stone?
Full Body 2CM Tiles came into being in this environment. In Realgres view, each material has its own characteristics. Although 2CM tile cannot completely replace stone, it is undeniable that 2CM tile are the most suitable substitute for the lack of stone resources.
"If you compare the 2CM full body tile of Realgres with the commonly used stone, its physical and decorative performance advantages are still obvious. However, due to the limitation of the material of the tile itself, it cannot be shaped and carved like stone. Etc." said the person in charge of Realgres tiles, "In addition, the full body 2CM tile can be basically used where stone can be used in the field of architectural decoration. For example, it can be used for building curtain walls, ground hanging paving, including laying squares. , Garages, villas, gardens and landscapes, etc., from family space to public space."

The core of the research and production of the 2CM full body tile of Realgres : highly restored stone decoration effect, ultra-low water absorption, high hardness and cost-effective application mode. Whether in terms of decoration or physical properties, it is superior to ordinary tiles and stone materials, and is the best substitute for natural stone.
Double "0" water absorption, performance surpasses stone. The full body 2CM tile improves the conventional ceramic tile firing formula, using natural clay as the raw material, adding silica (SiO₂) and other green renewable resources, and undergoing high-pressure molding. Its thickness reaches 2CM, the water absorption rate is below 0.1%, and the destruction strength reaches more than 10000N, which exceeds the highest detectable range of the current testing organization.

Use advanced technology to truly restore the texture of the stone. According to a variety of natural stone elements, the texture of the stone is highly restored, and the advanced production technology can achieve various processing surfaces of the stone, such as "antique surface, dry grain surface, litchi surface, glossy surface" etc.; texture, Designs and colors are integrated with Italian style; 3D inkjet technology is used to perfectly present the decorative effects of various high-quality stones.

In addition, compared with natural stone, the full body 2CM tile also has the advantages of "rich texture, uniform color and luster, controllable color difference and water absorption rate of less than 0.1%".
When compared with stone, Realgres 2CM tiles emphasize the high hardness and flexural strength. 2CM full body tile are equivalent to 6cm granite, which is suitable for streets, squares, parking lots, airports and other environments with heavy traffic. and people.
"Competitve Price" earns market. 2CM full body tile replace stone, which can reduce the overall project cost by 20-30%. 2CM full body tile are produced through standardized production, and their prices are generally lower than ordinary stone; the "weight, thickness and transportation cost" of the materials required for the project are greatly reduced, so as the total load of the project design is reduced, the construction efficiency is also improved. Can reduce the overall project cost. The 2CM full body tile has superior performance, is not prone to cracking, dirt absorption and discoloration, and has a long service life, which also reduces subsequent maintenance costs.
More possibilities for full body 2CM tile applications
The entire ceramic industry is seeking fusion, and full body 2CM tile enterprises are no exception. It is understood that this year's Bologna exhibition for the display of the full body 2CM tile tends to improve the style design, specifications and sizes, and make breakthroughs in bold use of colors.
The person in charge of Realgres tiles believes that there is still a lot of room for improvement in the full body 2CM tiles in China, and the most important step is to be recognized by more consumers. What follows is that ceramic companies should constantly update their designs, insist on the integration of production and research, and improve the system supporting; Realgres ceramic tiles provide consumers and designers with the same product series, with a thickness of 5.5-20mm and a specification of 300×600mm. 800×1800mm, a variety of colors, a variety of process product matching, research and production of ceramic tile application solutions suitable for family spaces and public spaces.

At present, the market for full body 2CM tile has been intensively cultivated in engineering channels. While insisting on R&D and design, expanding application scenarios and application methods is also a key part of it.
According to the diversified trend of market applications, Realgres tiles innovatively designed and launched more diversified granite products based on the original granite, such as OLIVIAN SERIES, GRANITE SERIES, SOLID SERIES, QUARZE SERIES etc. It is different from the common granite texture, which makes the product application more design-oriented, with 2CM thickness as the main product, and provides the same matching 1CM full body tile products, with a variety of crafted surfaces, and its perfect product system, in terms of design and function All meet the needs of various applications.
In addition, Realgres Ceramics has a new product that will be released soon, a countertop of 900×1800×20mm, which will be unveiled soon. Realgres Tiles proposed that full body 2CM tiles countertops can be used in conjunction with different places to expand the multi-faceted application of 2CM full body tile.

From the performance comparison, the full body 2CM tile countertop series has super acid and alkali resistance, high temperature resistance, anti-fouling and easy cleaning performance, so its application range is also wide, suitable for home countertops, kitchen cabinets, scientific research laboratory countertops, etc. Special workbench.
And the 2CM tile has enough strength and thickness, it can be directly made into a single product, no other strength compound is needed, and the price of the tile itself is lower than the price of rock slabs. Based on the above advantages, many professional buyers and engineering teams maintain a strong interest in the standard stone and alternative stone of the full body 2CM Tiles.
At present, the buyers who buy 2CM tile are mostly "professional buyers" who understand ceramic tiles and 2CM TILES. In the future, if more consumers can have a deeper understanding of 2CM tile, more consumers It is believed that in the near future, the 2CM full body tile will gradually expand its market share, or it will become a substitute for stone.

characters: BTS & Red Velvet genre: thriller, futuristic au warning: none summary: The twelve most ambitious and promising university students are welcomed in Choego, the world’s first entirely artificial intelligence-driven city, to compete for five job contracts that could change their life. But what if something goes wrong? What if they get trapped? What if the city suddenly turns against them? Can they find a way out before the countdown reaches zero? words: 4.4K tagged: @philosopher-of-fandoms
➼ Chapter Index
Smart cities had been prickling people's mind ever since microchip was created and even before. A place with infrastructure so developed you could find everything you need in a 10 minute walk radius, with such top security you wouldn't have to be afraid of letting your child outside, with an air so clear thanks to the green places and lack of cars that you could see stars clearly at night. The city that itself produced all the energy it needed making it sustainable and environmentally friendly. A community that didn't need nor relied on physical workers anymore but had machines to do everything they did. A city like that used to be a dream. Now, after dozens and dozens of failed projects, that city was Choego.
And Jeon Jungkook was there to make a name for himself.
After getting checked by a high tech security system, not to mention the more than 6 months long application and selection process, he was finally here, inside of those enormous gates of the artificial city, in the heart of future, as the second youngest of the twelve candidates to be a part of the real-life simulation, to experience another world, the life as it was and what it could be.
"This is beautiful," a girl with her brown hair in a ponytail, tied by a red ribbon whispered on his right in awe.
Jungkook glanced at her a little disinterested but followed her gaze anyway to marvel at the city built of metal and glass, pretty parks in-between of the human-made constructs and a part of him agreed. The lack of annoying mass of people flooding the streets, the clean roads without litter or stinking smell, the mathematical architecture of this place sure impressed him too.
Even if Choego was more of a ghost town with the lack of people than the dream city presented on ads.
"Sure if you have the taste of a caveman," another girl chimed in sarcastically, flipping her long black hair behind her shoulder, grabbing on her Gucci bag like her life depended on it.
Jungkook scoffed, averting his attention back to the huge projectors welcoming them in the city of future. It was a short movie about the development and building of the town, the fight and struggle of the hundreds of researchers, scientifics, politicians and other powerful people who dreamt a place like this could exist as it was today.
An awkward laugh cut through the murmurs of arrived students as their host descended on the granite stairs.
“Sorry for the advertisement. Our PR team insisted on showing you this,” said the tall, graceful female figure. She had a lab coat over her carmine dress, thick framed glasses on her snub nose and ginger hair so shiny she could have made an appearance in advertisements. She looked gorgeous, no wonder half the boys widened their eyes at the sight. However, the other half turned a blind eye to the welcoming committee, more immersed in the city itself.
Jungkook barely bat an eyelash at her as his mouth rather hang agapé on the enormous computer and server room the city had, a whole new district of wires and chips and machines that keep the city alive, it was basically the heart of its blood circulation. Amazing.
“My name is Han Raina and I’m the lead researcher here,” the woman bowed towards them slightly and being either polite or intimidated, most of the candidates did the same. “It’s my pleasure to greet you all.”
It sounded a bit forced, artificial but everybody anticipated her welcome speech because of the loads of classified information they basically came here in the blinds, not knowing anything about what to expect. Jungkook for one was clueless, and as he looked around, the other candidates had just as curious eyes like him. He was sure in one thing: he won’t go home without getting a job and the foundation of his stable future here.
“First of all, congratulation for passing our tests and being chosen. You are the greatest hope of the next generation and that’s exactly why you are here now. To see and be a part of the future. I would like to remind you that everything you do is recorded on hidden CCTV cameras all around the city because of security reasons and so that we can monitor your reactions.”
“I haven’t seen any cameras,” a pastel-haired boy interrupts as he checks the surroundings. A few follow his lead and he’s right, there are no cameras that can be seen around.
“They are too small to see. Probably micro or nano-sized,” Jungkook muttered and relished in the way every head turned towards him. As an electronic engineer student that was something he knew well.
“That’s right, Mr. Jeon, great thought,” Miss Raina smiles at him fondly and the screen that previously showcased the city’s presentation, was now divided into nine smaller frames, live recording of them from different angles. “But please, don’t pay any mind to them, act natural.”
For those who weren’t overdramatic, it was an easy task since they were aware that each public places had these kind of cameras recording people’s every move even in Seoul. Also, for safety reasons of future it was essential for the city to have eyes everywhere.
“I know all of you are very excited and curious since we left you in the dark but please understand that the simulation will only be realistic if you don’t know the details. However, it’s time to give you a little head-up on the city and about your week here. We can sit down and make ourselves comfortable in our meeting room. Follow me,” she beckoned a finger, inviting them closer and the dozen of university students followed her in unison.
“Sorry,” the earlier, ponytail girl apologized when she bumped into Jungkook on accident. She had pure innocence and childlike wonders in her eyes. Kim Yerim, the boy glanced at the name card hanging in her neck and he made a mental note about this girl not being a real competition.
“Let’s go, Yeri,” an older guy, Kim Seokjin based on his card, nudged her to move forward and there was both familiarity and fondness in his voice as he guided the girl by a hand on the small of her back. What a coincidence for siblings to make it to the top 12. Smartness must run in family or maybe the researchers wanted to add this as a factor to the simulation, who knows?
The group walked along a wall with a huge 3D map of the city into a room on the second floor which had a great view of the park in front of the building. They were merely 2 hours from Seoul yet it felt like another world, fancy, clean, ultramodern and green. Even the chairs in the room were done with utmost care to fit all the health requirements and ergonomic needs.
As soon as everybody was seated, the woman pulled out a high pack of documents and shared one pile of paper with each of them.
“First, we will need you to sign a non-disclosure agreement. You can’t tell anybody what you saw or experienced here. It’s a business know-how we can’t risk. If it’s done we can finally talk freely,” she explained as nobody complained. When they agreed to help this project, it was an evident, understandable condition.
Quickly everybody scribbled their names onto the paper but only a few of them read the contract throughout about the consequences of violating the confidentiality. Jungkook was one of those people.
When all of them handed the papers back to Miss Raina, she clapped happily.
“Okay, so now let’s talk about the city. You probably know a lot about its history, or if you don’t, you can always take our leaflets, so now let’s talk about its design,” she pointed at the map appearing on digital screen. As she was talking about certain parts of it, the map constantly changed, zoomed in or out. “We are now here, in the main research building of the town. Next to us is the laboratory, there’s the hospital, the public offices on the other side of the road. You can see the parks as the green blocks yourself too. Your dorms are located in the residential area, on the western part of the city. So yes, you will be able to see the sea but we do not recommend visiting it. For security reasons we closed off the ports.”
“And the bridge too,” a messy, brown haired guy mumbled as he stared at their cheerful host with cold suspicion. No matter how quiet he was, with that firmness of his voice nobody could not hear what he said and the hidden implication behind it.
Han Raina raised one of her prettily arched brows.
“Sorry but what do you mean by that?”
For a minute, it seemed like the guy was about to leave it with a grimace and careless shrug but then he pointed at the eastern side of the map where the Bridge of Silence, as they called it, connected the artificial island with the mainland.
“This city is totally closed and has only one way in and out with a gate controlled by electronics. Do you have any emergency plans for like terror attacks, or if they hack the gate?” he asked edging on the border of being necessarily polite and an arrogantly know-it-all. However, it was undebatable that the question he stated was an essential element of the security and safety of Choego.
“That’s highly unlikely to happen, Mr. Min but of course, “ the researcher lady nodded and sat down with her elbows resting on the table. She acted like the patient elementary school teacher educating the kids about the basic laws of physics. “Imagine this city as a huge computer. What happens when a computer is attacked?”
“The firewall kicks in,” the apparently tech-educated guy replied without hesitance and earned a satisfied smile from their host. A pang of envy poisoned Jungkook’s veins as he watched their interactions. Wasn’t it unfair for one of them to have a head start like this?
“Correct, it’s the same here too. Though, since our security is so high level any computer control panel has three-factor authentication including a biology one too,” Miss Raina explained and as Jungkook looked around, he wasn't sure everybody understood the concept of three-level protection. That it needed three separated traits to open a door, one knowledge-based like a password, one possession-based like an ID card and one biology-based like a retina scan. Because of the latter it was the most difficult kind of security system to trick without making a scene and the researcher echoed his thoughts:
“It’s impossible to hack our system from the outside. If anybody tries that, they have to be here and then we can pull a Louvre move on them. Does anyone know what happens if the security system detects a theft in the most famous museum of Paris?”
Ah, what is this? A quiz night? Jungkook almost grunted because he had no idea but he was actually surprised that for a long minute, nobody spoke up.
“It will close its doors, seal the endangered zone with bars until the police arrives,” the tall, wide-shouldered guy from earlier, Seokjin said much to the delight of the lady.
“Yes, so if anything like that happens, we plan to trap the intruders inside. The sectors would be switched off the electrical grid one by one until the attacker has no choice but to wait for the authorities right here,” she concluded and turned back to the suspicious guy. “And we have evacuation plans, too. Don’t worry.”
Jungkook wanted to laugh. If they were worried about something that definitely wasn’t terrorist attacks or a tsunami flooding the city. What were the chances of these events to happen right now while they were being evaluated? See? He was more stressed of the possibility of leaving without a contract in his hands, head down in shame.
“Okay, so since we talked about your dorm. Here are your ID cards,” Miss Raina flicked her fingers and at cue, the staff started handing out metal bracelets for each of them. “You can take off the visitor cards you got at the gate earlier since you are going to use these bracelets for identification from now on.”
The accessory’s design was simple, gender-neutral, easy to clamp on and light on the wrist.
“This functions as the prototype of the chips that will be injected into our future residents. It not only stores all the data about you but also monitors your health in case you were in an endangered situation. It also keeps track of your GPS coordinates to locate you and it holds all your authorization to make sure which sectors and offices you can and can’t go in. Your authorization level right now is a common researcher’s so you access most of our buildings including the labors. Once you will work here, of course, it will depend on your job position.”
“Does it have a camera in it, too?” a guy in baseball cap chimed in certainly not impressed by the idea of always being followed around. Not like phones didn’t have the same functions already and millions of people used those voluntarily.
The woman was quick to shake her head, seemingly absolutely horrified at the presumption.
“Of course not, we respect personal space.”
“But you will know when we go to pee,” said the guy as he threw in his visitor card that said Jung Hoseok to the middle of the table and put on the bracelet anyway. Even if this test took the evaluation process a bit too seriously with analyzing all their reactions, none of them wanted to leave. No matter how much doubt or fear they felt, they were too curious or too ambitious.
“What’s more, based on our health factors they will know when we need to go before we do,” a red-haired girl chirped and Jungkook frowned at the bracelet clipsed on his wrist.
“Yes, Miss Son is right, it’s an advanced tool, but keep in mind, it’s for your own good. It’s the future,” the researcher lady reminded them. The ‘future’ seemed to be their magic word solving every problem and being the ultimate answer.
“All in all, you need to have the bracelets on you all the time since it’s the key for your dorm rooms, too. Boys and girls will be separated, of course, but we provide you a common area to socialize where dinner and breakfast will also be served everyday. Based on your daily activities you will have lunch in either the offices’ or labor’s canteen,” she once again points at the map that highlighted the mentioned parts and flashed tomorrow’s menu on the board. Reading about Korean barbeque and pasta salads with salmon made Jungkook hungry as it was almost dinnertime and he hadn’t eaten since morning.
“Ahh it’s excited, isn’t it?” Miss Raina clapped enthusiastic again but nobody joined her. A few forced an awkward smile and some didn’t even care. They didn’t come here to have these chitchats and the middle-aged woman was most likely aware too as she added: “Don’t forget, even though we evaluate you individually, you have to work together in teams to succeed the simulation. Any questions?”
A few candidate exchanged uncertain glances but then a stern looking guy in dress shirt asked the question that had been on all of their mind: “What is the simulation about exactly?”
With his Rolex watch and elegant attire, it was obvious he came from a rich household. The son of Parks, Jungkook had heard about him. It was all in the news, that the child of the right-hand of Seoul's mayor will be a part of this test, one of those who can experience the dream city first hand. Some even thought he came here to spy for his father.
It was an interesting thought. Why would the investors of Choego let a potential rival's son on their land willingly? Or people are just being nosy and making fuss about nothing?
“I can’t tell you, sorry," Miss Raina shook her head and provided a diplomatic answer about her reasons. "It would change your natural reactions and the results of our research would be false.”
It actually made sense but Jungkook still couldn't make anything out about this project. He applied for the promise of bright future but they all basically dove into the unknown as they came here. But he wasn't the only one worrying about being left in the dark.
“And when will we be notified about our daily activities?” An older girl with rounded glasses asked as she was tapping on the glass table rhythmically but the awaited answer was just as vague as the earlier one.
“You will find your schedule for the week in your dorms. If you don’t have more questions, my colleagues will accompany you to there. Rest well, tomorrow will be a long day,” the researcher lady bid her goodbye with a well-practiced smile and two other scientists showed them the way to their temporary residences.
“You were brought here in an environmentally friendly bus but since the city is designed for pedestrians and not for cars you'll have to walk convenient distances like this,” they explained as they headed outside.
Their guides kept talking about the advanced technologies used in certain parts of the cities, the borders of the zones, the buildings' functions but Jungkook's mind wandered off as he stared ahead at the paradise made of glass, metal and money. He would live here one day, he decided and he wouldn't let anybody stop him now that he was finally here.
Kim Yerim had long learnt that in every group of people there was that one who knew the most nasty secrets of everybody and couldn’t shut up. She didn’t have to wait long to realize that among the twelve of them, Park Sooyoung was the gossip queen. No wonder since her whole family came from the tabloids.
“I really don’t get what half of these people even do here. It was in the requirement to have a major that can contribute to the development of the city and yet, here we have a psychologist, a sociologist and even a journalist?” she scoffed pointing at Joohyun, Hoseok and Yerim one by one. She didn’t even try to be discreet about her opinion as she was talking to noone in particular. She just wanted to show off but maybe it wasn’t the best crowd to do so, to outstand from. The mentioned boy didn’t seem to care that he was titled useless while the group’s eldest, Joohyun turned tomato red. It must have been quite offensive to her to be told off by a third-year while she was working on her doctorate.
And Yerim, she quickly turned her gaze away and her brother patted the back of her hand.
“Don’t even listen to her, okay?” Seokjin whispered into her ear and shot a sharp look at the girl in brand designed clothes. He was trying hard not to snap. He might have been a pretty calm person but for his sister, he would have done anything, to any extent.
It definitely wasn’t the hosts’ greatest idea to lock them into one place competing to get those limited job offers while they had to cooperate. They were both rivals and team members. What kind of absurd paradox it was? So when after having their nutritional dinner at their dorm place, they were advised to get to know each other a bit by introducing themselves or at least their name, age and major, it was almost obvious it wouldn’t end well.
“And that shabby kid?” Sooyoung carried on unbothered, pointing her finger at the youngest engineer of the group, Jungkook, if Yerim remembered correctly. “Believe me, he is the charity case here. This dorm is a real glow up from his place. The city creators must have taken pity on him”
“Oh as if you are any better. What the hell are you doing here, little vacation girl?” Jimin snorted and brought his arms onto the table, locking his fingers and looking straight at the Gangnam girl over his hands. From the look of her eyes, it was obvious the two of them had some history together or at least they knew each other, which wasn’t surprising as both of them lived the high life of rich kids. “You are only here because your daddy slipped a big pile of money to the investors.”
“Excuse me,” Sooyoung’s breath hitched and she looked downright offended by the accusation. “Every city needs tourists and that’s why I’m here. It’s just as important as the bullshit you do.”
That said bullshit was actually genetics, an innovative and really fascinating field of engineering. Yerim was actually quite impressed that even genetics were presented by the candidates.
“What did you just say? At least my field makes our lives better and healthier, it makes progress while you are just money-hungry...” the politician’s son kept raising his voice until Jin interrupted him:
“Enough,” he stopped the heated dispute with a single word before it could get even worse. “Haven’t you heard? We will need to work together. Not against each other.”
Maybe it was his Crisis, Disaster and Risk Management masters classes that taught him how to approach these problems but unfortunately, not everybody was so cooperating.
“As if,” somebody mumbled from the back, his lilac hair falling onto his forehead. He looked like he wanted no part in this desperate attempt at staying civilized as he stood up and left without any further goodbye. It stirred up the calming atmosphere again and Yerim couldn’t help but wonder if it was on purpose. Marketing was the keypoint of manipulation after all. That’s why she didn’t blame Sooyoung entirely for stereotyping all of them based on their majors and the information her father provided.
“Watch if I ever team up with these,” Gucci girl’s mouth pulled a grimace and as dramatic as she could be, she walked out the opposite direction Taehyung did, towards the girls’ dorm.
Yerim sighed. It was only their first day here and yet tension was already cuttable in the air. And the couple’s fight didn’t help either…
“Stop being so clingy, Joon,” the red-haired med student snapped at her boyfriend in disbelief. “We are not on a vacation, for god’s sake, let’s be professionals about this.”
“Huh? Now you’re saying we can’t be boyfriend and girlfriend here or what?” The pastel blonde hair guy blinked in confusion and - in Yerim’s opinion - understandable hurt written clearly on his face.
“It’s nothing personal, honey, but it’s basically a very unique job interview and you don’t befriend your rivals,” she said and trotted after Sooyoung.
A heavy sigh left Namjoon’s mouth and Hoseok who sit on his other side patted his back in empathy.
“My girlfriend also applied,” he told the exasperated engineer. “But when I got my letter, she said she was happy she didn’t got in because it would tear us apart. For your sake I hope she was wrong.”
She probably wasn’t, they all knew but nobody said anything and slowly they went on their way dispersing in the building.
Yerim got a good night hug from his brother and waved him off as she scribbled down some notes in her diary about today. Nobody was bothered by her little bit childish antics, nobody cared. The dining room was empty - save from one boy on his phone - when she finished and got up to shower and get ready for tomorrow.
Her assigned roommate was a very quiet girl called Seulgi who learnt some quite fancy named major - Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering as Yerim recalled - and she seemed pretty kind so far. They exchanged a few words before Yerim could actually use the bathroom. By the time she let her sore muscles loose under the hot water and brushed her teeth in front of the foggy mirror, Seulgi was fast asleep. With her nerves, the younger girl wasn’t so lucky, she struggled to close her eyes and let dreamland take her. Even the smallest noises of the ventilating system kept her awake.
After half an hour of tossing and turning in bed, she decided to take a world and have a glass of water so as quietly as she could she left their room. When the door closed behind her the corridor’s lamps automatically turned on much to her relief. She followed the directions she remembered from earlier, occasionally opening doors with her high-tech ID bracelet. Luckily she didn’t take it off for sleeping or else she would have had to go back for it. To her own surprise, she was able to locate and found the common room with kitchen without getting lost.
She filled a glass full of refreshing cold water and gulped it down as quickly as a man on verge of dying. Just as a relieved sigh bubbled up from her throat, she heard it… the clock ticking and hitting another hour. Then a flash of red painted the whole room colourful and Yerim almost dropped the glass as she turned on her heels. Putting it down onto the counter, she took careful steps towards the floor to ceiling glass windows. Her palm fit onto the cold surface nicely as she watched the moon’s reflection on dozens of glass buildings with wide eyes. The red light came from the building vis-á-vis burning carmine and angry. Yerim’s heart skipped a beat when suddenly she heard the unmistakable sounds of sirens.
“Ah I knew you were going to be here. Can’t sleep?” a familiar voice questioned in an amused tone and in her panicked state, the girl turned towards his brother, face breaking into a confused and terrified expression just like hers when they were children and she found a spider in their room.
“I think there’s something very very wrong, Jin,” she whispered in a trembling voice.
The faint distant sound of alarms and the warning red light suddenly stopped and then, all the lights darkened in the sector next to them. Like somebody turned the light switch off right at two o’clock and the border between the zones sparkled with electricity.
“No, it’s okay,” the elder said hurriedly pulling his sister away from the window. Just in time so she couldn’t see that lost bird flying right into the invisible wall and falling down as if it was struck by lightning. “I guess the simulation just started...”
