Blige), and Ugly Duckling ("Something's Going Down Tonight"). In 2009, Grand Puba released his fourth solo album, Retroactive, featuring production from Q-Tip, Large Professor, Kid Capri as well as fellow Brand Nubians. Puba also appeared on the heavy posse cut "Fresh" together with Cormega, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Red Alert and Parrish Smith of EPMD. On the song "Old School" by Tupac Shakur Grand Puba was sampled and used in the hook. Funk Friday! @official_brand_nubian - Wake Up Grand Puba Maxwell, of the #BrandNubians is probably my first, favorite rapper. His voice, timing and style including the way he dressed made me feel like I had an alter ego. If I was to be a rapper in the early 90s, his was the persona I would have adopted. I imagine if I really think about it, Puba is probably still in my Top 20. Before Hip Hop went from selling crack to smoking it, groups like Nubian, De La, PE, ATCQ and others started to hypnotize me using African medallions. These groups’ heydays met me at the “entering adulthood” stage of life. That time when you start to decide what direction you’re going to attempt to take in life. But more importantly, find at who you are. The track “Wake Up” is of particular importance to my canon. It is the first time I was really introduced to the 5% Nation of Islam. Gods and Earths. Knowledge + Wisdom = Understanding. Growing up an American Christian, the African-ess of the 5% Nation was engrossing. I dug in and soaked up the freedom & the culture. Researching Islam strengthened my African-ess and made me a “Better Christian”. I didn’t accept the ideology of Islam or the 5% Nation; however, it helped me recognize that the Christianity that I had been fed was weak….and wrong. It was full of hyper-materialism and emotionalism among other things. The JESUS “eye” found in the Holy Scriptures was full of prophetic fire, strength of character and love for humanity. It was the man I wanted to be – still.
