La Journée du #GrandNettoyage

The mayor of Paris is a rabid environmentalist and has instituted many green policies in the city including some Sundays without cars, green roofs on new buildings, swimming in the Seine among many others. One things she started in 2014 is  the Grandnettoyage, a day where citizens volunteer to clean the streets. Now they keep the streets soooo much cleaner here than in the US, with daily garbage pick-up (except when they are on strike!), water running in the gutter to clean the streets and sidewalks, trash cans every 100 feet or so on the curbs, and sidewalk cleanings a few times a week. 

But this was a community building opportunity as well as a neighborhood cleanup: https://www.paris.fr/grandnettoyage  There were starting times and locations in each arrondissement so at 14:00 hours I went to a local park to get my assignment. I was paired with another woman who, very luckily, spoke English very well. We were given vests, garbage bags and pickers and sent to one of the main streets to clean up any garbage we saw. 

It was actually quite fun and the pickers were able to pince even the tiniest scrap of trash, of which there were many because apparently Parisians like to rip their Metro tickets into a million pieces before throwing them on the ground. And don’t get me started on cigarette butts!! Quite a few people stopped to talk to us about what we were doing and Nicole was able to answer for both of us. She is a delightful 83 year old woman whom we will be adding to our entourage of Parisian friends.

Sunday was the first Sunday of the month so many museums waive their entrance fees. We have been seeing ads for a Pop Art exhibit on loan from the Whitney Museum in NYC so we decided to go see that. It was at a small museum near Saint Germain des Pres, a pretty chi-chi area with lots of pricey, designer stores and wickedly expensive apartments. On our way we passed the Yves Saint Laurent shoe and handbag store and found out what to buy for the upcoming season!

At first Richard said “those shoes don’t have any heels” but then we noticed the extension with writing on it which wasn’t a display platform as we had thought but a part of the shoe! I assure you I would have gone in to try them on to see if they bounce while you walk (if the guard at the door would have let us in!!) but we didn’t want to miss the exhibit at the museum!!

The high-heeled roller skates are on a mirrored shelf so it is a little confusing visually, but you can see that they are high-heeled roller skates. Nuff said!!

However, this wasn’t the most unique (meaning weird) fashion display we saw on our walk to the Musée Maillol. This has to be the most post-modern display in the entire city!!

I do expect to see the influence of this avant-garde display on Project Runway!!

Lastly, food pictures. As many of you know I had gastric sleeve surgery in March and I have been losing weight since then. One result is that I cannot eat large portions any more--only about 4-5 oz of protein and a few veggies or salad at a time. So my meals aren’t quite as interesting as they were the last time. I usually order appetizers as my main dish. However I have occasionally ordered a real meal, as I did at Chez Gladine, a small chain of 6 restaurants that serve Basque food. The restaurant close to us was adorable, with family seating because there wasn’t much room at all for the tables. We had read to get there when it opened at 19:00 (7 PM) because it could fill up in 15 or 25 minutes. And even on a Monday night, it did. 

There wasn’t all that much on the menu that I wanted because I had heard the salads, which looked fabulous, were gigantic and I just can’t eat that much, so I ordered the Saucisse Andouillette figuring I could take the extra home. I had never had andouille sausage but it said it was a smoked pork sausage so I figured it would be familiar.

Hmmm, it does look familiar!! Anyway, I cut into it and it was very coarsely cut pork with absolutely no smoked flavor but with a very strong gamey, porky taste. Uh, no. Luckily Richard had a comparable sized piece of sausage in his cassoulet so we traded and he really liked the andouillette. And he ate the wonderfully fried potatoes on my plate, of which I ate absolutely none! Anyway, it was a delightful experience and we want to make it a regular place to eat, but from now on I’ll stick with chicken and steak!!--SH
