Alyssa had a grand mal seizure this morning. It was the second one in five days, and seemingly without explanation (the first we attributed to Lexapro withdrawal, so she went back in 6 the dust she had stopped), so I rushed her straight to the hospital. (You should have seen my driving - some serious GTA moves to get through the crowded city streets ASAFP). Anyway, no answers, no reassurances other than it's nothing emergent or that they can visualize from the imaging and blood work that they did. But we do have referrals for a neurologist, so that's who I'll be calling first thing Monday morning. It is terrifying to see your child suffering, especially when you initially don't know what's wrong (as was the case with the first seizure). I'm very worried for Alyssa, and it's all I can do to not install a camera in her room so I can watch her 24/7 - but I'll make do with hourly checks managed by all of us, and investigating every thump or bump we hear (her bedroom is directly above hours, and I spend most of my day in our bedroom since my computer is in here). It's been a long 24 hours. Had my first #seizure (I think a couple actually) in quite awhile, I think October is the last one that I recall, coming back from Eureka Springs I had fallen asleep on the drive and scared the hell out of the person driving. And another I had (while awake) hanging with friends, also scaring the hell out of poor Bert. You'd think after a lifetime of this I'd get used to it. But you don't get used to it. Out of everything I battle health wise my seizures are by far the worst to cope with. Feeling as though I can't trust my own brain to function and cope with things when I myself am trying, not knowing when and if it'll happen. Leaving me with a fear of sleep and insomnia usually for days afterwards. Most intense I can remember in years leaving me unconscious until 8 pm or so last night.. the few hours I was awake last night was a heavy fog, slurred speech and some stuttering my entire body burned and I had a long lasting internal electrical vibe with horrible copper taste in my mouth and blurred vision until this morning feeling like my right eye had been dilated. I had so hoped to be up last night with the 🌕 but it was much more important I rest, recover and recharge. A successful brain surgery over 10 years ago helped alleviate her symptoms, rest her soul!! Cat rescue is scary. Even when there are expected scares, or problems that you have dealt with before and know how to handle, when the situations occur, I still have a few seconds of panic before the logical part of my brain takes over and I jump into action. Last night we had one such scare - Willow, Alyssa's little gas station kitten (her original name was Petrol, lol), has been sick with a persistent cold for several weeks now, and because she wasn't responding to #Clavamox, our veterinarian switched her to #Orbax. He had hesitations because of her age and side effects, and now we're going to take her back for a different medication, because last night those side effects appeared: Willow had a seizure. Orbax can cause seizures in cats as well as dogs. Most importantly: WILLOW IS OKAY. 💗 It was a grand mal, but a mild one, and she came out of it after 45 seconds, and that is the only seizure she has had thus far (Alyssa and I are taking turns monitoring her). Emotional Brain: OMGOMGOMGOMG OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS IS A SEIZURE SHE IS HAVING A SEIZURE THIS IS A CAT HAVING A SEIZURE OH NO NONONONONO WHAT THE HELL?! Logical Brain: this is a grand mal seizure. Leave her as she is, on her side, and move away any objects that could hurt her if she collides with them. Stay with her and talk soothingly, and as she wakes up comfort her. Once fully awake, check vitals. Call veterinarian first thing Monday morning.
