Being Kira and being the assistant manager of a university Starbucks was, Light admitted, a lot for one person to handle. Especially when two of their newer “partners” called in sick to their shifts, and no one was answering his “Can you put in some extra hours” texts on their days off – and also he had humiliated himself on television the night before thanks to an international detective. Light grabbed the soy milk harder than he needed. Just thinking about that smug voice-scrabbling scolding he got made him squeeze the damp cardboard in his fist.

“Don’t squeeze too hard,” Ryuk said. The Shinigami floated over the Starbucks dining area and examined his rings. “You’ll make a soy explosion.”

If he weren’t wearing a microphone headset right then, Light would have said a few choice words to his hanger-on. Ryuk didn’t even need to come to work with him; the death god chose to after he finished watching all of Light’s VHS.

“Light,” the cashier, a short blue-haired woman, pulled him over from where he was finishing a vanilla latte. Her big green eyes filled with the particular fear of a complicated order. “Please. You have to tell this guy he can’t have that many syrups.”

“I want that many syrups,” Ryuk leaned over the register screen, big yellow eyes pressed to the long itemized list. “Shinigami realm doesn’t even have one syrup.”

“The customer is always right,” Light rattled off. He wiped his hands on his black apron, not looking to see what sort of freak wanted – what was it, all of their flavor syrups? That would taste terrible, but it was what the customer wanted. “Just charge this man and we’ll make his drink.”

“I’m not a man.”

For a moment, Light froze. Misgendering customers wasn’t usually his business – leave that for the newbies, who still wrote Jeff as Jeb every time. He gave his cashier a pat on the shoulder and told her to take up drink service for a minute. Slipping in front of the register, Light glanced up at the customer causing all the fuss. Lean, with long unkempt black hair, deep under-eye circles, an arrogant, aquiline nose, they bore the air of someone taller than their deep hunch showed. They watched him with immense focus, leaving Light to feel butterfly-pinned. He smeared a smile over his lips.

“So,” Light said. “I’m so sorry for all the trouble. Let me give you this one on the house, as an apology.”

“No need,” the customer picked at their chapped lip. “Do you think it’ll taste good?”

“I’m sorry? Are you asking if I think what you ordered would be good?”

“Yes.” Dark hair flopped as the customer nodded. “If I trust anyone’s opinion on a coffee order, it would be you” – they squinted at Light’s name badge – “Light, Starbucks employee.”

“Partner,” Light said, his response ingrained. “We’re called partners now. We get stock, sometimes.”

“How wonderful for your financial portfolio,” the customer said.

Dull but present throbbing started in Light’s head. Bullish customers reminded him of that stupid L from the television. No matter what Light did, that detective had a comeback, a little maneuver to leave him steamed, although the thrill of countering those moves was natural for him. Customer service wasn’t dissimilar in requiring quick response time – and Light was an expert at making things go his way. After all, he managed angry mothers who didn’t realize mocha drinks had caffeine all the time. Some asshole with international acclaim goading him from behind a computer screen wasn’t that bad.

Still though. Headaches all the same.

“I think that whatever you choose will be right,” Light said. He already entered his manger override and was about to push the order through. “It’s your drink.”

“Tell me,” the customer shoved their hand over the register screen, halting Light in his steps. “Have you ever once told a customer the truth in your life, Light?”

Their gray eyes bore into him and Light found as he stared at their features a certain handsome severity in them. Behind him, the kitchen hushed. Heat burst in his cheeks, giving Light an unwelcome blush. Was this person really going to humiliate him over some stupid drink order? Light swallowed the indignant spit welling in his throat.

“Your drink is going to taste bad,” he said – more spat, to be honest. “If you mix that many flavors, all you’ll taste is the artificial sweetening and the drink won’t even be digestible, I think. But you wanted it, so we’ll make it. Is that truth enough for you?”

The customer smiled. Light’s blushed deepened; not fair! It was a really cute smile.

“What would you recommend for someone who wants a drink that’s very sweet, then?” they asked. “If not all the sugar syrups combined?”

“I guess,” Light turned his attention to the menu, erasing the previous order. Making custom drinks was a particular pastime he enjoyed of his job. Finding elements from every part of the menu, pulling them together with knowledge borne of both taste testing and simple common knowledge: it all felt like a fun science experiment. “Hm. Well, I’d start with a blonde vanilla latte, three shots because you look like you’re not much for sleeping.”

“Excellent deduction,” the customer said. Although Light didn’t look up, he heard their tone warm, and grinned to himself. On a roll now, he thought.

“Then I’d add two shots of raspberry, two classic syrups shots, one pump pistachio sauce,” Light’s finger flew over the register screen. “Regular ice, wait, no. Extra ice. Whip cream and, just for you, freeze-dried strawberries on top.” He stopped and looked up at the customer. “Sorry, do you have any dairy restrictions? Is two percent okay?”

“Oat milk, please,” they said with a stupid, cute smile on their thin lips. “You’re quite good at this.”

“Oh, well,” Light finished out the order, not denying himself a little satisfied smirk. “I’m happy to help. What’s the name on the order?”

“Put it under,” the customer paused, their smile falling for a second. Above them both, Ryuk wheezed with laughter. “Put it under Lawliet, please.”

Light took Lawliet’s card, running it through the reader. Ryuk being annoying didn’t dampen his spirit, really. As he handed the card back, his and Lawliet’s fingers brushed. The caress stayed a phantom on Light’s skin as he made the drink. The entire time, he didn’t spare a single thought for L.

I wonder if Lawliet will come back, he thought as he watched them sip at his creation and nod approvingly. Light surprised himself with his next thought: I hope they come back.

2. Alternately, regardless of Mello’s past, what “normal” job would he have had?

1. I always think Mello would have been a writer of sorts. I HC that, as a teenager, he loves to read and writes in a journal almost daily (no one better dare to call it a diary!) and would have wanted to do something that would use his reading and writing skills. 

I see him getting a degree in journalism, doing freelance work while he writes a novel, crime fiction of a kid that joins the mafia and takes it down from the inside, ultimately becoming the hero. 

2. I think the above scenario is possible regardless of his background, but if he was never orphaned, I think he would have become a professor of Literature who, in his free time, works on a true crime novel called “The Reign of Kira” that details everything he could dig up on the case and how the mysterious God of he New World vanished. (Which would not be easy with how much was covered up.) It would no doubt become a bestseller for sure!

Ok, buckle up as I tell you:

Death Note strip club AU made by my friend who knows nothing about Death Note

So, my friend Hawk came over to my house not long ago. For fun, we decided to do that little game where you show somebody a character and they have to guess their name, what they do, etc. (which can be a good post on it’s own, it’s hilarious)

Anyhow, it all started when I showed her a picture of Ide (who she calls “Ian”, she had to guess all their names after all). She knew he was a police officer, but I asked her, “if he WASN’T one, what would his profession be?”

and she said, “mailman by day, stripper by night.”

AND THAT’S HOW IT ALL BEGAN...

So here’s the full AU so far:

There exists a club, unnamed, ran by Matsuda (”Mavrik”). The club was originally a restaurant until one day Misa (”Mavrik 2″) wanted to have a job other than chasing Light around. So, she went to apply for the restaurant, but was shocked by all the “thick ass” she saw there. So, she lied to Matsuda about why they needed stripper poles. She said that they needed them for support or else the roof would cave in. Matsuda, being stupid, believed her. He had a shit ton of money he got from Watari (”Mr. Wankton”/”Mr. Wanky”...yes, that is the name Hawk gave him), so he bought it without problem. Misa is the TRUE owner of the club, while Matsuda still think it’s a restaurant.

Ide is one of the employees. He’s a great stripper, but his day job is as a mail man.

Mikami (”Seaweed”) is FANTASTIC he is the number one stripper in da club. In this AU Takada (”Titties”) is his sister. She was skeptical about his job at first until he bought her an Xbox with all the money he got. She approves of it now.

Near (”Nathan Regionald”) was highered to be the bar tender. Technically this is the job Misa applied for, but she doesn’t know jack shit so she hired Near instead. He dresses up as a catboy and is exclusively referred to as “catboi” and he says “nyah” when he gives people their drinks.

Matt does the lights in the club, and he drops lowkey hints to Mello (”Michelangelo”) that he should TOTALLY join the club cuz hed be a great stripper. Mello doesn’t get the hint, so Matt just takes him there. The MOMENT Mello sees Near, he leaves. Matt is baffled because, despite working here for months, he didn’t even know that was Near.

Near noticed Mello however, and having a crush, sends Mello a letter that says, “Dear Mello, I noticed you left the club yesterday when you saw me. If you come back, I’ll give you a free, personalized show.” he keeps sending these letters until Mello shows up (he doesn’t).

Soichiro (”Light’s dad”) also goes to the club for Ide. He is single now because Mikami killed Sachiko cuz he “thought it would be funny”. Btw in this AU Mikami says “kerchow” when he uses the Death Note instead of delete.

Kira/Light has his own club called the Kira Cartel but it’s much less popular and he wants to kill everyone in the rival club. He can’t, however, because they all go by e-boy names.

Let me preface this by saying I absolutely love your work and you’re one of, if not, my favorite fanfic author of all time.

I ADORE “Crush,” and I’m so envious of your ability to think up and write cannon-compliant fics. Everything I think or type up, pretty much, are AUs. So my question becomes: If you could write anything for the DN fandom that was not cannon and was an AU, what would you write (if your mind thinks that way)?

thank you so much! that’s a huge, huge honour!! i’m obsessed with the death note universe and love the very specific flavour that matt & mello have in canon, so canon-compliant fics have always been my bread and butter, both to read and to write. but i really really admire people who can write aus because they rely so much on the author’s creativity and storytelling!

i have a couple of ideas for au’s actually, will list out a few that i am most likely to actually write:

a road-trip bonnie & clyde-flavour au where matt is an nsa agent and mello is a trans woman; they’re both running from the cops for different reasons. i’ll eventually write this one when i’m done all my current projects, so i won’t talk too much about it. 

mello is an equestrian and matt is a stableboy at mello’s relative’s dude ranch, and the two of them develop this passionate, romance novel relationship. i’ll probably never write this one, lol. it’s not really suited to my writing style. (that being said if anybody has read an equestrian au in the past, please link me, i’m desperate)

i also am obsessed with an au where matt is bailed out of jail by mello who needs his help on something. i’m not sure if i’ll ever write this one either, but the image of mello calling matt in prison makes me go a little bit insane.

After some prompting from ohgodpleasedontlook, I have made the long journey over here to ask about your catboy!Light head cannons.

wow yeah big trek to come all the way to translightyagami HQ for some catboy Light thots. all you must know about catboy Light is that he’s a kitty cat and he dance, dance, dance! 

but seriously. Light as a catboy is just a golden, soft-eared, slinky-tailed little troublemaker who bites your fingers if you give him the wrong crinkle-toy (”It’s the gold one,” his beleaguered owner, L, tells you as you get nipped for handing over the green crinkle-toy. “Light is particular about his gold toys.”). He likes pets behind the ears, or on the base of his tail, he wears black turtlenecks and can spot liars faster than anyone on the police force, he has a pink collar with a jingle-bell that every once in a while L fondles just to make Light blush, and he takes naps in sunbeams. Sometimes, the sunbeams are conveniently in his favorite napping spot - L’s lap - and he gets pets from his neck to his tail. He knocks Matsuda’s coffee on the ground and everyone says he’s a naughty cat in adoring voices. He knocks L’s coffee to the ground and, well, he is a very naughty cat ... maybe he just needs a little activity to occupy those mischievous little catboy hands. call it environment enrichment for rude little catboys who don’t respect their owners - whatever the case, Light is more than willing to ride out his energy on L, who gets all kitten kisses and licks he could ever want.

Hi there! You are my first anon ever! Thank you so much for the questions ☺���❤️

1. Things that inspire you

Well first of all definitely my best friend in the entire world @graciegirly06! I would never have been introduced to death note without her, and never would have thought about writing without her influence. We develop stories and the death note characters a lot through our conversations, which is so much fun and always gives me new ideas and inspiration. She’s also so supportive, and just picks me up and knows what to say (Also she is a stellar author so go check her out). Music also really puts me in mood to write and provides me with a lot of inspiration. “Telephones” by Vacations is the song that I associate most with my one-shot Burn, and helped me think about what I wanted to write. Good music, specifically music with an underlying tone and meaning, really helps with my inspiration and ideas. Basically music puts me in my feels and then I want to write something based on that feeling 😂. Also if I happen to feel upset or low, I can sometimes take that and channel into my writing to help make it more emotional, which is what happened with Burn. The same can be said about being overly happy/excited though.

20. Favorite character to write

This is really really tricky, because I’m on the fence. I love to write all the death note characters, but I especially like to write L and Matt. There’s not a lot of information on Matt, so I can put a lot of my own interpretation into him which is always very nice. I do love to write about a super nerdy red-headed softy with a leather wearing blonde hot-headed boyfriend. And L is just which a fun character to try and develop and write about because come on.. It’s L. But Lights the same way.. and it’s interesting to develop and think about both innocent!Light and Kira!Light so it’s hard to choose. I’m currently writing something from Mello’s perspective, and he’s such an interesting and complex character that I would have to say it’s him at least for now.

27. Best review you ever got

I am new to the fanfic scene, and have yet to post everything that I’ve written as well as have a bunch of drafts that I’ll get to.. but my favorite review ever was on Burn, where someone commented that it was so good because “I DON'T EVEN SHIP THIS WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME.” Which was probably the best compliment ever because I made someone ship Matt and Mello with my story. It was a total “woah 😳” moment. Ive also gotten a couple of reviews on Burn talking about how I’ve made people cry.. and while Im really sorry I caused pain and tears, I’m very glad it had the emotional impact I was going for.

So I saw you had answered a few asks... so I presume asks are open... so I’m going to ask about all the things my mind has wondered since I’ve been reading “Crush.”

If you have any thoughts about it, I would love to hear some Headcannons about what Matt and Mello’s past relationships were like. We know Matt was with a few girls and had an actual, long-term relationship with Amy, but what about the other relationships? What were his flings like? The same thing goes for Mello! We get peeks of him with Jamie (I think that’s what his name was, my bad if it’s not😖) and I’d like to know all about what’s going on there, how it happened, and if Mello’s had any other relationships in the past.

and yes, there’s a lot of lore here, but it really didn’t make it into crush because it’s just way too much information that doesn’t have anything to do with the plot. i’ll put it behind a cut!

matt’s got a few past relationships, lots of hookups. his first girlfriend was a girl he met online through myspace back when he was around 15 and living in london, back when people would just add people randomly. her name was taylor but she went by hailey, went by hailz on msn, lived in texas, and they talked a lot on msn for a few months where he’d video chat with her, try to grow out his hair to be emo because she was scene and liked pop punk bands, etc. he even pierced his own ears for her! but hailey ended up breaking up with him so they never met. :(

matt lost his virginity to a girl named sidney, who was his roommate’s sister -- he didn’t really have much of a relationship with her and she didn’t really consider him a boyfriend or anything. but he saw her as his girlfriend and his “first love” before he met amy. she kind of broke his heart because he really liked her at the time. of course by the time we see him in crush, he doesn’t think of her much anymore.

also, when he was living in las vegas, he had a stint of sleeping around a lot with random women. mostly older women and milfs lmao, which is his like, secret thing. but shh!

amy came afterwards when he moved to phoenix -- they were together for almost a year i believe. the longest, most stable gf he’s ever had. but the two of them developed heroin addictions together, so a portion of their relationship was spent nodding out on matt’s mattress. 

her parents put her in rehab, took her phone, and cut off contact on her behalf with matt. and matt just kind of... spiralled after that, and left for california. that’s the last of his relationships.

now, mello will very aggressively tell you that he “doesn’t date,” which is kind of a lie. he had a thing with a boy from wammy’s named rein, who would sell kids cigarettes and weed and was really good at picking locks. mello used to hang out in his room and smoke with him. mello never told anybody, but matt kind of guessed that they were seeing each other, so matt used to be super jealous of him even though he bought cigarettes off him because he was cool and older and played on the soccer team and mello seemed to like him a whole lot. rein ended up getting expelled a year before mello left.

anyway after mello left wammy’s house, he ended up shacking up with rein in london, they were in a brief relationship at this point too until mello stole his money, his ids and his laptop and fled to new york, leaving him behind. matt never finds out about this.

after rein though mello hasn’t had any partners. usually he would just hook up with people if the mood struck him. there was a boy at a club once who reminded him of matt, so that definitely was a fun moment. but he hasn’t really had a partner. 

jamie is a hustler and mello just goes to him regularly, so it’s not exactly a romantic relationship between the two. i think that at the point that they met in crush, mello had probably been going to him for half a year or so... not long at all.

fun fact: mello used to have a huge crush on L back at wammy’s house, imagined him as looking like a marlon brando type, lmao. and we all know that mello was awfully, dreadfully in love with matt back at wammy’s house, too.

and i get asked this a lot so just clearing it up as well, matt is bisexual, mello is gay. in crush, matt has never been in a relationship with a guy, even though he’s had his own fantasies before about like celebrities and stuff (and andre). mello has never been with a woman.
