“Timeless Women” made by yours truly (@oswxldstardis). Please give credit if you share!!
I made this to celebrate the incredibly talented women of the TV show Timeless, and the women they visit throughout history on the show. See if you can spot people! Ofc I love all the men in the show (obvs, they’re amazing) but I just wanted to shed a spotlight on these wonderful, amazing women who (apart from all the murder and time destruction) I look up to so much!
Also I’m slightly in love with Emma Whitmore but that’s a story for another day.

We Love Lucy!
For Co-Editor @badasswomengivemelife Timeless protagonist, Lucy Preston, has been one of the best feminist characters to hit our screens in years. In the wake of the series cancellation announcement, we decided to sing our praises for the wonder that is Lucy.

Grace Quackenbos Humiston, also known as “Mrs Sherlock Holmes,” was an American attorney and detective. She was the female Special Assistant United States Attorney. For her various services, she often allowed people to pay her what they could afford, which was sometimes just a nice dinner. Grace was known for two cases: that of Antoinette Tolla, and that of Ruth Cruger.
Antoinette Tolla was an Italian immigrant who shot and killed her American sponsor in self defense as he tried to rape her. Antoinette, who couldn’t speak English, was sentenced to death by hanging for her crime. Within a week of starting her investigation, Grace was able to find evidence that there was a cover-up: many people were in some form of debt to the man Antoinette shot, and so the coroner had removed and hidden evidence he'd found on his body. Antoinette’s sentence was changed from death to some time in prison. Grace accepted no pay for this case, saying she’d “prefer to take the case without remunera as woman for woman.”
In the case of missing 18-year-old Ruth Cruger, Grace sent a friend undercover to work at the motorcycle shop where Ruth was last seen alive. After this friend’s cover was blown, Grace decided to just buy the entire store so that she could dig up the basement. There, she found Ruth Cruger’s body.
After this, Grace was made the first official female detective of the NYPD, and she dedicated a good part of her life to finding missing girls. She also helped to expose peonage in the south.

Saving the links for future reference because it’s such an interesting read about a real life detective Grace Humiston.
She ran a detective agency for the poor, worked pro bono, saved a woman from a death sentence by proving that she had acted in self-defence, investigated cases when people were turned into slaves long after the slavery had been abolished, and found the murderer of a missing girl and had him imprisoned in spite of his connections with the police.
Another article about Mrs. Humiston in Smithsonian
Also an article about fictional female detectives in the Victorian era:
Furthermore, the female detective of the Victorian era is often forced into her investigation because of outside forces beyond her control. This is likely because detective work, and really any work in the public sphere, was not considered ladylike, and authors felt it necessary to explain how their women characters fell into such work.
By the end of the story, the woman detective is often taken down a peg or two, and/or she is sent back to her domestic sphere.
