can ghost tails interact with things? how's his and sonic's relationship? is it awkward since he's, you know, dead?
eventually tails will have all the abilities of normal ghosts in media. possession (of people and objects), changing the temperature of the air, and making sounds that those without high chaos energy levels can hear. but as of now, he can't do any of it.
however; he can see chaos energy as it flows through the air. and while he can manipulate it, he can't do much with it yet. he can really only draw with it
super amy for example:

it's bright and easy to see when someone's gone super, but the energy fades once they're back to normal. he can still see it though
and he'll eventually pick up that if he can see someone's energy-they can see him.
as for his and sonic's relationship; nothing's really different. tails is happy, so sonic doesn't let it affect him either. he does wish he could give the kid a hug though
the only thing that changes is literally physical contact. tails can't carry sonic while flying, they can't snuggle together when it's cold, tails can't fly the tornado, etc. other than that, it's exactly the same.
as tails's existence grows older it'll get more complicated (tails will be like.. a weird fusion of classic&modern at that point lol), but for now it's an easy-going companionship
there is one person he can make physical contact with though, and it's tikal <3

Is All I Could Ever Asked For
Ch 4: Wait for Me at the Finish Line
For the first quarter of the sixth grade, he and Cole only shared a lunch period. Cole took it a little harder than he had, but Simon did miss his company. Simon had been excited to start middle school. They had the freedom to pick their classes and try new things. He and Cole had signed up for all the same classes, but wound up having them at different times. That had been what prompted him to see if Cole would join the cross country team with him. Cole wasn’t much of an athlete, and Simon promised there was more than just running to it. Coach Fowler took one look at Cole and suggested he be the team manager. It was the sort of coordinated busy work that he loved. Simon was happy because it was extra time they could spend together after school. Doing the cross country team also gave them the change to make friends outside of their slowly splintering group. Ripple was the first to reach out to Simon, and John came next. The manager for the girls team, Ralph, eventually came to attach himself to Cole and it was pleasant. They would talk a lot and sometimes manage to get some of their homework done on the bus ride back.
Race days were definitely the best though. He got to push his limits and try and break his personal records. His absolute favorite thing though, was that Cole would always be waiting for him at the finish line. As a manager, he had to be neutral during the races, but as soon as the meet was over it was always tight hugs and excitement. The bus rides were always calm enough that he fell asleep. Cole would always wake him up with a gentle nudge when they got back to the school. Simon didn’t find himself interested in the sports that were offered during winter quarter. Except for volley ball, but their school didn’t have a boys team so that was a bust. He and Cole had two classes together this quarter anyway so finding something that they could do together wasn’t as pressing as it had been in the last quarter. They had just gotten to Cole’s room with their hot chocolate and homework. “So,” he started as they were getting situated, “I was thinking about maybe doing track when spring rolls around. Wanna join me?” “You’ve seen me in P.E.” Cole remarked and wrinkled his nose at the thought, “I’m a bad runner.”
Simon couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled out of his chest, “You could always manage the team like you did with cross country.” He took a drink from his hot chocolate before he continued, “Coach Fowler is going the be in charge of the track team too, and he seemed to like having you around.” “You have a marshmallow on your nose.” He replied off handedly, “I’ll think about it. I had a lot of fun with cross country, but I don’t know what my spring classes are going to be yet. I don’t know if I’ll have the energy.” Simon did his best to get the marshmallow off his nose. As it turned out, going cross eyed didn’t help much, “That’s understandable. I don’t want you to have a panic attack.” Cole smiled at him and Simon couldn’t distinguish if it was because he was happy, because Simon looked dumb trying to hard to get the marshmallow off his nose; or both, “Thank you for understanding.” He eventually managed to het the marshmallow off his nose and they were able to get back to their homework. Simon was looking forward to spring when things would liven up again. He enjoyed running competitively more than he thought he would and Cole seemed to enjoy managing the team. The fact that they got to do it together made it better.
When spring came around Simon didn’t waste any time signing up for track. For the first few practices Rupert was the only manager, but by the end of the week Cole had joined him. They seemed to work well together and having more than one manager made things run more smoothly. Just like with cross country, Cole was always neutral during his races, but caught him in a tight hug and congratulated him as soon as the meet ended. It was nice to have something that they could enjoy together. Something that was just theirs. Even if Cole didn’t run with him, he was always waiting at the finish line. That was all Simon wanted. He was happy.

Did ghost tails die before or after meeting Sonic? Did tails attach himself to Sonic when he first visited Sonic and was like "i like this one" and Sonic just accepted a ghost of a child follows him
I accidentally asked this on OvergrownGraveyards blog 😅 the ask was meant for you and Ghost of Westside au
i saw that lmao
it's ok, overgrown and i have accepted that we're just the same person /lh
tails did die before meeting sonic and he tethered himself to sonic when they finally did meet, mostly because sonic had been the first person to be able to see tails after he died
the tether isn't anything major really. it's a small string of chaos energy that's tied around their essences. it's fragile, easy to snap if either of them choose to by simply being far enough away. it's mostly there for comfort and because tails likes to fidget with the thin string. they don't need a physical tether to keep them together, but they like it
they both got attached to each other the moment they met

so who all can see ghost tails??
anyone who's gone super can see him; so sonic, knuckles, amy, shadow, silver, mighty, and ray
chaos and tikal can also both see him as they're tethered to the master emerald
blaze is iffy. because while she more than likely could go super, she has yet to. she's only done burning blaze.
eggman can pick up on his energy (ghost hunter eggman is real /j) but he and the rest of his robots cannot see or locate him

Will Never be Boring
Ch 4: Stay Over?
By middle school Markus liked to believe they had gotten ahold of the class gap thing. He was in sixth grade and could finally pick his own classes. He’d asked Connor for help because as a seventh grader he had already done this once, and if they did it together they would be able to match their classes better. They would really be able to do electives together, but that was fine. He managed to convince Connor to take some art classes, and in turn signed up for an engineering class he wasn’t all that keen on. Math wasn’t a strong suit of his, but he would be fine. It didn’t take long for Markus to decide that one of his favorite things about his art classes was getting to see Connor’s drawings. Despite Connor’s own opinion, Markus loved them. Of course middle school also came with more work and they couldn’t always hang out together. Their group began to section off a little at a time and it left Markus feeling a little out of place, but he was still determined to stick close to Connor. He had friends from his own grade as well and he did his best to split his time evenly between them. He would have loved for Connor to be able to join them, but a few of his classmates where rather, affectionate, and he didn’t want Connor to be uncomfortable.
He liked to think he had been managing pretty well. His birthday was coming up and he had a plan. The weekend of he would have a party with all of his louder friends; and the weekend after he would have Connor come over because Leo would be out of town and the house would be quiet then. It was a full proof plan. Or, at least, it had been. Connor stopped talking to him after his first party. Connor didn’t say much as it was, and Markus didn’t think he would have noticed if they hadn’t been friends for so long. No one else really seemed to notice. He almost would have rather Connor would have gotten upset, then at least he would have known where he went wrong. Markus wasn’t sure how he was supposed to figure this out. He had only wanted Connor to be comfortable. Had that been the mistake? By the end of the week Markus couldn’t take it anymore. Connor was one of his best friends and Markus didn’t want to lose him over something like this. Their shared class would be the only time he was able to talk to Connor without him trying to excuse himself. He hated the idea of cornering him, but nothing else he’d tried so far had worked. Every time he had approached him Connor found a way to excuse himself.
“Hey Connor?” He started when Connor settled across from him, “Can, uh, can we talk please?” Connor looked away from him and tapped his fingers against the table in a sharp rhythm, “Are you sure you want to talk to me? Why not your other friends?” He flinched at that, maybe he really had messed things up this time. “Because,” He began once he collected himself, “They aren’t the ones I hurt without meaning to. I’d like a chance to explain myself, if you’ll let me.” “Okay.” Connor replied when their teacher was finished giving them the directions for the day, “If you want to.” “Will you listen? Or are you still upset?” He didn’t continue until Connor gave him a nod, “I know I probably should have said this before the party, and I’m sorry for that; but I didn’t invite you because I knew you would be uncomfortable. As much as I wanted you there, I couldn’t invite you knowing that you would be miserable if I did.” He tried his best to explain, but it felt like he was only making excuses, “My plan had been to have that party last weekend, and one for just the two of us this weekend. Uh, if you, well if you still want to anyway.”
“Of course I still want to.” He said after a long stretch of silence, “I’m sorry for being so rude.” “It’s fine.” He dismissed gently, “I’m just glad you aren’t upset with me anymore.” That was all it took for things to shift back into place. It surprised him though, when Connor cut into the conversation with one of his classmates. Echo seemed delighted, but the moment she stepped into his personal space Markus watched Connor begin to withdraw from the conversation. He excused himself and Echo turned back to Markus with disappointment glinting in her eyes. “I don’t think your seventh-grader friend likes me much.” She huffed, “Did I do something wrong.” “No.” Markus shook his head, “I just takes him a while to warm up to people.” That seemed to be a good enough answer for her because she let it go after that and Markus got back to the sketch he had been working on. It was of the cafeteria from his perspective at the table. He doubted it would be something he finished, but he was trying to branch out from only drawing people. He wanted something that was a little more challenging than that and drawing a crowd of middle schoolers crammed into one room seemed to fit the bill. Almost a little to well if he was honest.
When Friday rolled around Markus found himself thrilled. They had planned things out carefully. Connor would take Markus’s bus home today and back to school again on Monday. At any time he could call his dad to come get him if things came to that. Markus hoped they wouldn’t, but some bad days couldn’t be avoided. They had even come up with a color system. It was an easy way to check in just in case. It consisted of three colors. Blue meant everything was fine. Yellow mean Connor needed some time to get himself together or calm down. Red meant that they needed to call Hank so Connor could go home. Markus of course hoped things ever went past yellow. It wasn’t until they were waiting to get on his bus that Markus remembered how crowded the thing usually was. Giving Connor a warning about it now seemed pointless so opted to check in once they were seated. They took seats toward the back. “Color?” He asked once it seemed like Connor was situated. “Blue.” He replied, “I’m alright.” Markus still took his hand and gave it a squeeze, “You can always listen to your music if you need to. That’s what I do sometimes.”
“I might.” He replied as the bus rumbled to life. Connor managed to make it through about half the ride before Markus noticed him reach for his backpack. Once he had his headphones on and was comfortable again Markus gave his hand another gentle squeeze. He put his own earbuds in until they got to his stop. He grabbed Connor’s attention and they got off together. Markus paused his music and put his phone away. “How do you deal with that every single day?” Connor asked once he had put his headphones away. “I’ve lived with Leo my whole life.” He replied with a shrug, “They aren’t much louder than him on any given day.” “I suppose that helps.” He replied with some wariness to his voice. “You don’t have to worry about him though.” Markus amended quickly, “He’s got plans for tonight at least. It’s just going to be the two of us and my grampa tonight, so the house should be pretty quiet tonight.” “Okay.” The relief in his voice made Markus smile, “Is your Grandpa nice?” Markus laughed as he turned up the walkway, “Yes he is. You don’t have to worry about anything Connor. I promise.”
“Got it.” Came the not quite confident reply and Markus felt Connor take his hand. He let Connor gather his thoughts on the way to the door. This was a new thing for him and Markus didn’t want to make things any more difficult. He had already done that once without meaning to. “Color?” He asked when they got to the door. “Blue,” There was a pause, “I think.” That was about as good as it was going to get, so he turned his key in the lock and opened the door. “Grampa?” He called as they stepped inside, “We’re home.” “Okay Kiddo.” His grampa’s voice carried from farther up the stairs, “I’m in the gallery.” He waited while Connor took off his shoes. They went up stairs and set their stuff in his room. Once Connor had his things situated more or less the way he wanted them, Markus lead the way to the gallery. His grampa grinned at the sight of them. “You must be Connor.” He said as he wheeled himself over to them, “I’ve heard great things about you. I’m Carl.” “Nice to meet you sir.” Connor replied and Markus noticed his hesitation before he shook the hand that was offered to him. His grampa shook his head and laughed, “Sir makes me feel old, just call me Carl. Or Grampa if that’s easier on you.”
“Okay si- Carl.” The trip up made them both smile, he was trying his best, “Did you paint all of these?” “Most of them,” His grampa replied, “Some of them are Markus’s.” “Grampa,” He cut in when he noticed where this was going, “He doesn’t know.” “I don’t know what?” Connor parroted. When his grampa didn’t reply, Markus decided to explain instead, “Grampa is the famous painter Carl Manfred.” “Was.” His grampa corrected almost harshly, “I haven’t done much public work since my accident. I would like to keep it that way; so this knowledge doesn’t leave this room. Okay?” Connor made a zipping motion over his lips, “Okay.” He wandered the gallery for a little while after that and Markus observed him. When he’d had his fill they went back to Markus’s room and they worked on their homework for a while. He was a happy and a little surprised at how comfortable Connor seemed around his grampa. It had been one of the reasons he hadn’t had Connor over before now. His grampa could be a bit much sometimes. They seemed to get along fine though, so he wasn’t worried about it anymore.
When they got back to his room for the night Connor began to rifle through his bag. Markus was curious until he came away with two neatly wrapped presents. He was delighted. “Before you worry.” Connor began, “I bought these before your birthday.” He felt himself relax some, “Okay, that was what I was worried about.” “Anyway, happy late birthday Markus.” He said as he held out the gifts. He unwrapped them carefully, he wasn’t one for the sound of tearing paper. The first of them was a book on painting techniques that he hadn’t seen before. The larger of the two was an acrylic paint set. The amount of thought Connor had put into these made him grin. “Can I hug you?” He asked so he could avoid crossing any boundaries. “Yeah.” Connor replied. Markus caught him in a tight hug. “Thank you so much. These are the only art related presents I’ve gotten that weren’t from my grampa.” “What can I say?” He replied as he pulled away, “I know you.” “You panicked didn’t you?” He teased. “Maybe.” He agreed. This was definitely worth the wait. Especially when he came out of the weekend with a nicely painted portrait of Connor.

Will be the Best Years of My Life
Ch 4: Let Me be You Tether
When they hit sixth grade he and Silas were separated again. As much as Daniel hated it, Silas was the one that seemed to really be struggling with the change. They had the same lunch and on the days Silas wasn’t in the principal’s office for some reason or another, they would spend the whole of it together. There was talk about moving him up a grade like they had done with Connor. Silas didn’t want that, but it didn’t seem like anyone was listening to him when he brought it up. More of their lunch periods were taken up by Silas either crying out of frustration or sitting in an infuriated silence. So when Silas didn’t show up for lunch Daniel sent a text like he always did.
Daniel: R U ok?
He wasn’t expecting an immediate reply’ especially if Silas was getting lectured again, but when he still hadn’t heard anything by the end of his science class he was beginning to genuinely worry. So he sent another one. The best case scenario was that he simply hadn’t seen it. The worst, he supposed, was that Silas’s phone had been confiscated again.
Daniel: Silas? Silas: Had some issues so I’m @ home Silas: You can come over later if you want Daniel: of course <3 see you after school Silas: See you then <3
The messages didn’t do much in the way of making him feel better. It could have been that Silas’s behavior had finally gotten him suspended. Just as easily though, he could have called his dad to come pick him up. As it was he had his phone, so Daniel could check in again if his worry kept eating at him. At the end of the day he got on Silas’s bus. The driver was used to seeing him by this point so he didn’t need to bring a note with him anymore. When he, Cole, and Connor stepped through the door Silas was on the couch playing games with cartoons playing in the background. He looked at Daniel for a moment and then began to pack up his things. They were going to be hanging out in his room today. “Pajama day huh?” He said lightly as he and Silas got situated on the bed. “Something like that.” Was Silas’s half hearted reply as he made himself comfortable pressed up against him, “How was school?”
“Pretty boring, like usual.” He shrugged the shoulder that Silas wasn’t using as a pillow, “How was your day?” Silas was quiet for a long enough period of time that Daniel thought he might have fallen asleep and then he let out a sigh that sounded more defeated than anything else, “Tiring. Dad had to come and rescue me from being bumped up a grade.” “They’re still on about that?” He said with a groan, “They know it won’t work right?” “They do now.” Silas replied with a laugh that was as dry as it was amused, “I’ve never seen someone look so scared of my dad. The good news is that I should be getting moved into your class soon.” “That’s great.” He smiled. “You know, I did think about it, right?” He said quietly, “Moving up a grade.” “Why didn’t you?” He asked carefully. “I looked at Connor, and how he’s always reaching back for Markus, and I realized that wasn’t what I wanted.” He tightened his hold on Daniel just slightly, “I’m happy to stay behind because it means I get to stay here with you.” Daniel felt another smile curl at his lips, “I’m glad you chose to stay then, I would have been lonely without you.” Silas took his hand and intertwined their fingers, “Attached at the hip, remember?”
He squeezed Silas’s hand as he replied, “Attached at the hip.” Daniel hoped they would stay like this for a while. He was content to be Silas’s tether, to ground him when he needed it. Silas was the same for him whenever he needed it. They were close, and Daniel didn’t want that to ever change. Especially on the bad days.

Will Never be Boring
Ch 3: A Weekend in Blue
Once they made middle school being a grade above everyone wasn’t s bad. They had a little more control over their classes and the electives were all mixed grades so he still had a chance to be with his friends. Understandably they all tried to match up. He wound up with a lot more creative type classes than he originally planned for. Connor wasn’t particularly creative. He preferred numbers and provable things, but getting to spend a little of his time with Markus everyday more than made up for it. Over the years Markus had added painting to his talents, and Connor was always blown away by the sheer amount of feeling in them. He always seemed delighted when he got to see Connor’s child like messy drawings in turn. Personally, he despised them. Middle school brought more work with it so it became more difficult to hang out as an entire group. They began to section off a little and it left Connor feeling strangely. He had always thought the group of them would stay close. It wasn’t like there was fighting or anything, they were just drifting. His dad said these kinds of things happened sometimes, and that they would come back together eventually.
Markus made a few of his own friends, but in all of that he tried not to leave Connor behind. He knew Markus’s birthday was coming up and Connor was trying to figure out what to do for it. He wasn’t very creative so a homemade card or poem was immediately out of the question. That left using his saved up allowance to buys something, or giving up. He did his best to come away with something that wasn’t overly predictable, and failed horribly. He eventually decided on a book of advanced painting techniques and a new paint set to go with it. Better than the sketchbook he’d originally been debating, but not great. In the end it didn’t really seem to matter much because he wasn’t invited to the birthday party. The only people that got to go were the friends from his various art classes, which Connor found strange. Connor tried to be reasonable about it. He wasn’t very comfortable around Markus’s new friends. Maybe he had been trying to respect that. It didn’t lessen the sting, but this made it easier not to be upset. He was sure Markus had a reason. In the years they had been friends he had never been to Markus’s house. The most of he knew of it was that he lived up on the hill where all of the nice houses were with his brother and his grandpa; though Connor had never met either of them.
It was about a week after the party, and after the gifts had made their home at the top of Connor’s closet, that Markus approached him about it. He looked just as uncomfortable as Connor felt. They hadn’t really talked since Connor’s birthday, and he had been trying his best to make peace with the fact that Markus was drifting away from him. Just like everyone else. “Hey Connor?” He asked once they were settled in their art class, “Can. uh, can we talk please?” He looked down and tapped his fingers against the table to try and get rid of some of his nervous energy, “Are you sure you want to talk to me? Why not talk to your other friends?” Markus was quiet for a long moment and Connor realized that he might have been a little harsh. “Because,” He said eventually, “They aren’t the ones I hurt without meaning to. I’d like a chance to explain myself if you’ll let me.” It was is turn to be quiet this time. In part because their teacher was talking and he didn’t want to draw attention to himself; and because he wasn’t sure he was ready to learn that Markus had outgrown him too. “Okay.” He said quietly, “If you want to.”
“Will you listen, or are you still upset?” He asked and waited for Connor’s tentative nod before he continued, “I know I probably should have said this before the party and I’m sorry for that; but I didn’t invite you because I knew you would be uncomfortable. As much as I wanted you there, I couldn’t invite you knowing you would be miserable if I did.” He explained, “My plan had been to have that party last weekend, and one for just the two of us this weekend. Um, if you, well if you still want to anyway.” Connor could have cried, but he wasn’t about to have a breakdown in class, “Of course I still want to.” Then, after he had collected himself a little more, “I’m sorry for being rude.” “It’s fine. I’m just glad you aren’t upset with me anymore.” He smiled. Just like that, things were back to normal. Markus had his other friends, but he also didn’t seem to have plans to leave Connor behind. The weight of wondering where he had gone wrong that had been threatening to bury him was finally off his shoulders. He could breathe again. When he got home the first thing he did was try to wrap the presents he had bought Markus. Just this once, his homework could wait.
A single interaction with one of Markus’s art friends was all the proof Connor needed. While Echo was very kind, she was also very touchy and Connor was immediately uncomfortable. She stopped when he asked her to, but he still chose to excuse himself from the interaction. He was glad now, that Markus had thought to keep him away from this. As he headed to the library he heard one last thing. “I don’t think your seventh-grader friend likes me much.” Echo told Markus, “Did I do something wrong?” “No.” Markus said kindly, “It just takes him a while to warm up to people.” He supposed that was true enough. He was just wary. Kids his age were loud for whatever reason and it got to be too much a lot of the time. It was just easier to keep his distance and wait for someone to come to him. He still felt a little guilty though, Echo had only been trying to be nice. Maybe on a day when he had more spoons he could try again, and just try and stay out of arm’s reach or something. He hadn’t meant to hurt her feelings and he wanted to fix it.
Friday he came to school with an extra bag. Inside were the things he needed for the weekend and the presents he had gotten for Markus. He was equal parts excited and nervous. He hadn’t gotten to meet Markus’s family and he was worried they might not like him. The plan was to ride Markus’s bus at the end of the day and then again on Monday morning. Of course, if he got uncomfortable he could always call his dad to come get him, or walk home if it came to that. Perks of living in the same neighborhood he supposed. It wasn’t that he expected things to go wrong, it just eased his anxiety to know that he had a way out if he needed one. Markus seemed to understand which was nice. Since it was their first big weekend like this, Markus had helped him come up with a color system. Blue meant things were fine; yellow meant that he needed a moment to himself to try and get it together; and red meant it was time to go home. He hoped he wouldn’t have to use red, but just like his exit plan, it was a nice thing it have in case he needed it.
The day passed faster than he would have liked and he wasn’t ready for the sheer number of the kids on the bus. His bus was usually pretty crowded, but never like this. It made a little more sense why their neighborhood had three different buses now. “Color?” Markus asked s they settled in one of the seats toward the back. “Blue.” He replied. He hadn’t been expecting this many kids, but he was okay for now, “I’m alright.” Markus took his hand and squeezed it, “You can always listen to your music if you need to, that’s what I do sometimes.” “I might.” He replied, but for now he wanted to try and stick it out for as long as he could. He managed about half of the ride before he had to put on his noise cancelling headphones or risk having a panic attack. It wasn’t that anything in particular had happened, the constant chatter had just grated on his nerves more than he planned. His bus wasn’t exactly quiet, that was categorically impossible for middle schoolers, but he was used to his bus and not this one. Markus only squeezed his hand again and then let him be until it was time to get off. He was thankful to be free of all that noise.
“How do you deal with that every single day?” He asked after he had taken his headphones off. Markus gave a nonchalant shrug, “I’ve lived with Leo my whole life. They aren’t any louder than him on any given day.” “I suppose that helps.” He said distantly, he wasn’t ready to deal with more noise so soon after the bus. “You don’t have to worry about him though.” He replied, “He’s got plans tonight at least. It’s just going to be the two of us and my Grampa tonight, so the house should be pretty quiet today.” That was reassuring at least, “Okay. Is your Grandpa nice?” Markus actually laughed at that as they turned up a long walkway, “Yes, he is. You don’t have to worry about anything Connor, I promise.” “Got it.” He said, but he still took Markus’s hand. They were quiet the rest of the walk to the door. Connor was trying his best to relax. Markus said there was nothing to worry about, and Connor wanted to believe him, but his anxiety wasn’t as easily swayed. “Color?” Markus asked when they got to the door. “Blue.” He replied after a long moment, “I think.”
That seemed to be a good enough answer because Markus turned his key in the lock and pushed the door open. Along side being the biggest house Connor had ever seen, it was also the fanciest. Despite all of that, as he stood in the entry way with Markus’s hand in his, he didn’t feel at all out of place. “Grampa,” Markus called into the house, “We’re home.” “Okay kiddo,” Came the reply from further in the house, “I’m in the gallery.” Connor took off his shoes out of habit before they went any further into the house. Markus didn’t, but waited for him before he lead him up the stairs. They set their stuff up in Markus’s room before they headed for the gallery. The more he saw of the house, the more in awe of it he was. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting Markus’s grandpa to be like, but it didn’t include him being covered in tattoos or wheelchair bound. He did his best not to stare, and instead tried to look at the paintings that were scattered around the room. Some were properly placed on the walls, but most were leaned against the walls, furniture and even other paintings. Every single one of them took his breath away. He knew now at least where Markus’s sheer talent came from.
“You must be Connor.” He said with a smile as he wheeled himself closer, “I’ve heard great things about you. I’m Carl.” “It’s nice to meet you sir.” He replied and shook the hand that was being held out to him. Carl laughed, “Sir makes me feel old, just call me Carl, or Grampa if that’s easier on you.” “Okay si - Carl.” His trip up earned him an amused smile, “Did you paint all of these?” “Most of them.” He replied, “Some of them are Markus’s.” “Grampa,” Markus cut in, “He doesn’t know.” “I don’ t know what?” Connor asked as he looked between the two of them. “Grampa is the famous painter Carl Manfred.” He clarified. “Was.” Carl corrected with a sternness to his voice that left Connor a little rattled, “I haven’t done much public work since my accident. I’d like to keep it that way, so this knowledge stays in this room. Okay?” Connor made a zipper motion over his lips and both of them smiled, “Okay.”
They stayed in the gallery for a little while longer and Connor wandered around to get a better look at the paintings. After that the night was pretty normal. They had dinner, worked on homework, and talked about their classes with Carl. It was almost like being at home. This wasn’t nearly as nerve wracking as he thought it was going to be. After they had gone to Markus’s room for the night Connor got the presents out. He didn’t miss the smile that came to Markus’s face. “Before you worry,” He started when he noticed Markus was starting to look uncomfortable, “I bought these before your birthday.” He relaxed noticeably, “Okay, that’s what I was worried about.” “Anyway, happy late birthday Markus.” He picked up the two wrapped presents and held them out to him. Markus took them and Connor watched the joy spread across his face when he opened the reference book and thumbed through it. His smile only grew when he got yo he small paint set. He set the paints on his desk then put the book in a very specific place on his shelf. When he finished he settled beside Connor still beaming. “Can I hug you?” He asked.
“Yeah.” Connor had barely gotten the word out before he found himself caught in an embrace that was tight enough that it bordered on painful. “Thank you so much.” Markus said into his shoulder, “These are the only art related present I’ve gotten that weren’t from Grampa.” “What can I say” He replied as Markus pulled away, “I know you.” “You panicked didn’t you?” He asked. “Maybe.” He agreed. The weekend after that was spent with Connor sitting very still. Despite the fact that he was coerced into modeling for the two of them by Markus, he found himself hoping that Monday never came. Or at the very least, they could have a weekend like this again soon.

Will be the Best Years of My Life
Ch 3: I'll Stay Behind to Stay with You
Middle school came with his teachers trying to get him to go the way of Connor. They figured bumping him up a grade would help with his ADHD; that having a challenge to pit his boundless energy against would calm him down. They didn’t listen when he told them it wouldn’t work. That if they just put him in Daniel’s class he would be fine. The school didn’t believe him on that either and decided to go over his head and call his dad. So the next Monday found him in his guidance counsellor’s office with his dad. Understandably, when he’d first gotten the call his dad assumed Silas had gotten himself into trouble again. Silas watched with some amusement as his dad got gradually more annoyed as his guidance counsellor talked at him. “That isn’t going to work.” His dad said bluntly and cut the counsellor off, “Just because their twins doesn’t mean Silas has the same needs as Connor. If you shove him into a new class he’s only going to disrupt more because he’s going to be on his own in a new environment.” The counsellor tried to pipe up again, but withered under his dad’s glare, “Did you even bother asking Silas what he needed or did you ignore him because he’s a child?”
“Ah, well,” He scrambled, “We just thought this would be a better fit for him.” “Than what exactly?” His dad pressed. “He asked to be switched into the same schedule block as Daniel Pealeson.” He explained, “We didn’t think placing him in a class with someone he had history with was a good idea.” “So let me get this straight.” His dad leaned to his full sitting height before he continued, “And correct me if I’m wrong; but instead of putting him in class with the one person known to keep him focused, you want to pull him away from his peers and into a classroom full of strangers?” “Well when you put it that way-” “Do you have any idea how ADHD actually works?” His dad continued, “Routine and familiarity work best to keep these kinds of things to minimum. If you put him in Daniel’s schedule block things will go better. If you don’t believe me you can ask his elementary school teachers. They found this out on accident.” “Alright.” His counsellor said after a long silence, “We’ll make the change as soon as we can.” His counsellor clearly didn’t expect his dad to be as well informed as he was; he was out of his depth and he knew it.
They were dismissed after that and Silas smiled as his dad ruffled his hair on the way out. It was nice to know that even when no one else would, his dad would always be there to make sure the right thing got done. It was tiring to always be ignored and talked over just because he’s a kid. “Sorry you had to get called in just to tell them the same things I have been for weeks.” He said when they got into the hall. His dad just shrugged, “It’s not a problem Sixer, that’s what Dad’s do.” He pulled Silas against his side in a tight half hug, “Sorry it had to come to me being called in just so you could be heard.” “Its just so frustrating.” His voiced wobbled with tears. He always hated that his first response when he felt anything in excess was to cry. He was angry, “I’m the one dealing with this. They should believed me when I say I know how to make it better child or not!” “Shh Six, I know” He pulled Silas into a full hug and ran his hand through his hair to soothe him, “Let’s go home for today, and you can try again tomorrow.” “Okay.” He sniffled, “I don’t think I can concentrate like this.”
Silas was in a relatively low mood after that. He just wanted to be heard and listened to by the adults around him. Why was that so hard? They listened to his twin, so why not him? Was it because Connor’s Autism showed more than his ADHD? If he had a meltdown would they listen to him then? “Hey, come back to me Silas.” His dad’s gentle voice pulled him out of his head and he realized he was crying again. “Sorry,” He mumbled as he wiped his eyes. “Want to talk about it?” His dad prodded gently. Silas heaved out a wet sigh as they pulled into the driveway, “I just don’t get it. They will listen to Connor when he needs special requirements, but whenever I need help they ignore me. Why?” His dad was quiet for a long moment and drummed his fingers on the steering wheel as he looked for his words. “You and Connor present differently. His Autism comes through more than his ADHD so the school tends so see him as a small child, like he can’t function properly without his accommodations. Your ADHD comes through more, and that’s been reduced to you simply having too much energy instead of what you actually deal with. They think that if they can make you tired you’ll behave in the way they want.” He paused, “It’s not so much that they see Connor and don’t see you; but more that they see you in two very different lights.”
Silas sighed again, “Why can’t they just listen to us? It can’t be that hard.” “Because they’ve gotten it in their heads that they know what’s best, even when they very clearly don’t.” His dad replied with a level of exasperation that Silas felt down to his bones, “Take today to try and decompress okay? And if you want you can invite Daniel over after school. Alright?” He gave slow nod, “Okay.” They got out after that and went inside. Silas changed back into his pajamas and climbed back into bed. He pulled out his phone to message Daniel, but his exhaustion pulled him under before he could get that far. When he woke up a few hours later his dad had left to go back to work. So Silas more or less had run of the house. Any other day he would have seen this as an opportunity to cause trouble. Instead he dug in the fridge for his leftovers and put on cartoons. He didn’t really want to be a person today. The morning had been draining and he was still feeling sour about it. He checked his phone and found a couple of messages from Daniel.
Danny: R U ok? Danny: Silas? Sixty: Had some issued so I’m @ home. Sixty: You can come over later if you want Danny: Of course <3 see you after school Sixty: See you then <3
He smiled slightly as he picked through his food. Talking to Daniel always made him feel better. Daniel didn’t always understand what he was going through, but he always tried his best to be supportive. Silas always appreciated it. When it became clear that he actually wasn’t hungry despite not eating anything all day, he put his food back in the fridge and went back to watching cartoons. Eventually he went to grab his Switch so he had something to keep his hands busy. That was how Daniel found him when he came in through the front door with Connor and Cole. They shared a look and Silas grabbed his things so they could head back to his room. He didn’t have the energy to deal with everyone today. “Pajama day huh?” Daniel asked lightly as they settled on his bed. “Something like that.” He replied as he leaned his head on Daniel’s shoulder, “How was school?” “Pretty boring, like usual.” He said and shrugged his free shoulder, “How was your day?” Silas huffed, “Tiring. Dad had to come in and rescue me from being bumped up a grade.”
“They’re still on about that?” Daniel groaned, “They know it won’t work right?” “They do now.” Silas laughed, “I’ve never seen someone look so scared of my dad. The good news is I should be getting moved to your class soon.” “That’s great.” He grinned at Silas. “You know I did think about it right?” He said eventually, “Moving up a grade.” “Why didn’t you?” He asked. “I looked at Connor and how he’s always reaching back for Markus, and I realized that wasn’t what I wanted.” Silas explained, “I’m happy to stay behind because that means I get to stay here with you.” He was met with a bright smile, “I’m glad you chose to stay then. It would have been lonely with out you.” He took one of Daniel’s hands in his and intertwined their fingers, “Attached at the hip remember?” He squeezed Silas’s hand in return, “Attached at the hip.” He echoed. Silas smiled, he was happy to stay behind if it meant he could stay like this.
