oh gosh, i overlooked this drabble request. here goes:

"pick something."

"i know. that's what i'm trying to do."

"just pick something."

"i'm trying, onii-chan, so could you please—"

"gou, i don't have time for this, so just pick—"

"I'M TRYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" gou huffs, stomping on her brother's foot. her face had gone redder than her hair and her brows are furrowed so deep they looked like the flippers of a pinball machine. and—argh—gou is convinced she'll have to wear her pricey snail extract repair masks thrice a day now to get rid of the wrinkles. what luck.

"it shouldn't be this damn hard getting a gift for okaasan, gou. you're a girl, aren't you—get her some girly shit!" rin grumbles, wiggling the toes of his foot. his sister is lucky he loves her; not that he'd ever admit.

gou sneers. "it's not like you're helping, are you, onii-chan? things would be much faster if you stop yapping and help think of something!"

"i would, but—" rin pauses, and suddenly he looks a bit sheepish. "but i haven't been around okaasan enough to... to know what she likes, what with me, uh, being in australia and all. heh."

he sees gou's shoulders rise, slowly, ominously, like his words had ruffled her proverbial feathers, so he quickly adds: "and besides, it'd be much faster if you decide instead of us both choosing different things so just—hurry up, will you?!"

gou takes a deep breath and closes her eyes for a splitsecond. she returns to browsing through a rack of pretty pashminas the instant her eyes open, unbothered by her brother's pesky comments.

"you never rush haruka-senpai when you walk him to the swimsuit aisle," is all she says, and it's enough really.

enough to get a rise out of her ignorant, repressed brother; enough for him to turn red and then purple, like he's holding his breath.

or maybe not breathing at all.

"sh-shut up about haru! this has nothing to do with haru!" rin hisses, clumsily flipping through a rack of scarves.

gou smiles knowingly and joins him on his search.

"see? at least now you're helping."

You and Gou became friends in junior high and later chose a high school together where you developed romantic feelings; it was in the second grade when you started studying together for the mock exams for college. You used to spend a lot of time in coffee shops, at the school library, and at your home during the holidays. Your parents liked this sweet girl very much, and when they found out that you were dating, they were more than happy – Gou was very modest, sweet, kind, always smiling and full of various ideas. Your mum willingly made her favorite cakes and cookies for her, and dad always asked how she was doing at school and whether all her relatives were healthy. They were very protective of her and really wonderful; you were surprised by their behavior!

Well, as your girlfriend has known your parents for a long time (soon it will be about five months, btw), the idea finally came to her mind to meet her own family. Colloquially speaking, your girlfriend invited you to dinner.

You were well aware that the nineteen-year-old girl only lives with her mother and older brother, because her dad passed away a long time ago. After all, you talked a lot about the Gou family, but that was not enough for the teenager – she really wanted her relatives to meet another person who was important to her heart.

Of course you agreed, but at what cost... Ever since you heard about the invitation to an official dinner with the Matusoka family, you had nausea and dizziness every morning. More than five times your mom must have calmed you down because you felt like you fainted with emotion. In addition, you could not focus on learning and the only thing that was on your mind was what outfit you should wear and what hairstyle to make to present yourself as best as possible.

Your better half, of course, assured you that it was no big deal, just a simple Japanese dinner and dessert with her sweet mother and stupid brother, but... It was huge for you! Something indescribable, unbelievable! You were really scared at the thought that no one in household would like you, ugh! You had the feeling that they would hate you and prohibit you from seeing Gou...

But as it quickly turned out, it wasn’t as terrible, bad and weird as you thought it would be; your girlfriend’s mom made your favorite dishes with Gou’s help, she was so nice to you throughout the meeting, also added that you’re really precious and intelligent and that she is glad that her daughter started dating someone and her mood improved. Rin – your partner’s brother – was also kind to you, asked a few questions and when he heard that you liked one particular sport, he became very interested; no matter if it was swimming, volleyball, jogging or long jumping. You also talked a lot about studies, his swimming results and music. Gou was delighted.

After the meal and dessert were finished, it was hard for everyone to say goodbye; Mrs. Miyako liked you so much that she wanted to spend some more time with you, preferably until supper or the next day. Rin also wanted to get to know you better, as the partner of his little sister. On the other hand, you didn’t want to impose yourself and disturb the rest of the people present at the table...

“... Mom, can Y/N stay with us for the night?”

“It’s not such a stupid idea after all, dummy!” The burgundy-haired girl’s older brother smiled. “We can play cards or order a pizza for supper!”

“Mommaaaa~?”

“Well... I don’t mind kids, it would be great if you would stay with us Y/N-chan.” The smile of the mother of two siblings made a slight blush appear on your cheeks.

“It’s really nice, thank you. I will inform my mom.” You answered with a slight chuckle. “Gou, we have to go to me for some clothes and...”

“I’ll lend you mine!” Two siblings spoke simultaneously, and you and Mrs. Matusoka laughed.

You were glad they liked you that much.

-as you rested your head on the window, you felt something move around your face. at first you didn't pay attention to it, thinking it was just a fly, until you heard strange noises coming from whatever was crawling on your face. you slapped the side of your face, only to feel something you least expected. it was a beetle, but not just any beetle. it was momo's prized stag beetle he planned on giving to gou.

-oh the scream that came out from you after that sight

-both you and their parents are praying for a peaceful trip where the brothers won't fight-

-well that didn't happen

-first off, the aux is passed to natsuya because he's got that music taste

-at some point during the trip him and ikuya were fighting over the aux because ikuya didn't want to listen to his "shitty" music

-you were able to stop them, as you stole the aux for good lets hope you have good taste in music unlike me cough

-ikuya, on the other hand, has his headphones shoved in his ears probably listening to sweater weather

-it’s teasing ikuya about embarrassing childhood memories hours

-more like bullying ikuya hours

-while he's asleep, you and natsuya would take turns trying to tickle him

SouGou theories, thoughts and speculations based on canonical evidence

Alright, I know I am so epically late to the party just like I was with Haikyuu and TsukiYachi but I am here now and I am so sad that a lot of the SouGou shippers have...disappeared...

Regardless, I still want to put forward my own thoughts and speculations on these two because they have given me brainrot over the past few weeks. 

So much like the earlier post I did with TsukiYachi, this one will be similar, except I am basing everything on the anime as I have not read the light novel (tbh light novels aren’t really my thing so...). Just to reiterate, when I make any speculations and theories, they are always based on canonical evidence, and of course my own interpretation. I put forward solid evidence so people can see where I am coming from and what I am yapping on about. People are free to draw their own conclusions of what they see in canon, so just because I have a theory with evidence, it does not invalidate another person’s theory of the same evidence...if that makes sense?

Every time I watch a new anime, I always come in with a very neutral mindset. I have a fascination with relationships (hence my ship heavy blog) so I ship characters based on their level of chemistry and compatibility.

Because I am so fashionably late to the party, a lot of the speculations below have been discussed by other SouGou fans. Essentially when I read some of their posts, they pretty much validated what I saw. So I want to credit all those SouGou stans who did the hard yard first on their speculations of these two. This post may already have what was speculated, but it’s nice to have it all in one big post. I will of course add my own thoughts and interpretations as well. So, happy reading!

Gou’s Relationship with Other Characters

Sousuke did not make his debut until Season 2, so for all of Season 1, the focus was on Gou and the other characters. To be honest, nothing stood out to me in terms of shipping potential with Gou in Season 1. I do not go into watching anime with the intention of shipping characters - the shipping just automatically occurs when two characters have good chemistry. So with Gou in Season 1, all I saw was a manager being incredibly supportive, friendly, strong willed and determined to see her friends through the swimming club. You may have read my other post on Free! and toxic masculinity, but I did mention in there that what I loved most about Free! was the friendship and the emotional vulnerability. Because Gou is a side character, we never get to see too much of her and how she would develop as a character outside her obsession with muscles. But as viewers, we get the gist of her sweet personality.

Kyoto Animation

Before I dive into the speculations, I want to point out something with KyoAni. For starters, this studio is known for its amazing adaptational works of manga and light novels. When it comes to anime that does not purely focus on romance, they are so so so good with romantic undertones. As much as I do enjoy romance anime, I enjoy ones with subtle undertones of romance even more. I have watched a large portion of anime from KyoAni and I can definitely come to the above conclusion. Although Free! is not a romance genre, there is very subtle light teasing of potential developments between certain characters. Like I mentioned in my Free! post on toxic masculinity, I will disregard that just because the male characters are hugging, crying and showing vulnerable emotions to each other, it does not necessarily mean that there is a romantic development. The very subtle undertones of romance I could see is mostly between Gou, Sousuke and Momo (I will explain more later). So what I am trying to point out in this paragraph is that Free! does have minute traces of romance, because based on what other anime KyoAni produced, there are similarities in how they portray romantic undertones.

SouGou Initial Meeting

The initial meeting did not particularly stand out to me until I watched more scenes and interactions between SouGou later on in the series. What I noticed was the level of admiration Gou has for Sousuke. Again, this was not apparent when I watched the initial meeting scene on its own. I had to see a culmination of scenes between them to realise.

Oh gosh just look at how happy she is seeing Sousuke. If you go back and watch this scene again, she legit just shoved Momo out the way and ran to Sousuke. Lmao poor Momo!

Middle School

Just something I picked up. When Rin transferred to Iwatobi during middle school, it sounded like Gou did not go with him. So she stayed behind in the same middle school together with Sousuke after Rin left. See below.

Because Gou is one year younger than Sousuke, the scene above just sounded like he stopped talking to her when he left for Tokyo when he was a first year high school student and she a third year middle school student...and then the below scene confirmed when and the reason...

In the above scene, Sousuke explained that he hurt his shoulder in the summer of his first year of high school, and then he heard from Gou that Rin was visiting Japan at the time, so I am guessing SouGou must have stopped talking to each other around that time when Sousuke injured his shoulder. The injury was most likely why he stopped talking to her because he knew the consequences...that if Rin found out through Gou... then yeah... so to him it was better to cut off contact with both siblings...omg my heart...my poor baby Sousuke...

Anyways, point is they were definitely still talking when Rin went to Iwatobi and then later Australia. So I wonder how close they were to each other...? They do sound very close...wonder if they walked to and from school together...omfg my heart hurts again...aaaahhhhhhh

Childhood Friends

This trope is so cute and I really like the whole ‘he is my brother’s best friend’ kind of thing. Because we all know how overprotective Rin is of Gou and if there is anyone who is good enough for her, Rin would definitely think it be Sousuke.

LOOK AT HOW PRECIOUS THEY ARE OMG. Love this official artwork of all three of them. And Sousuke has such a sweet gentle expression when he is looking at Gou...

Best part also is that subtle teasing of these two. Anime is always about camera work and specific panels as well, so it just looked like to me that they really wanted to emphasise this scene between SouGou. The snow, the Christmas tree, the childhood friends - all in one frame.

Indirect Moments

These are the moments that started me on the SouGou ship! 

Gou sees Sousuke at the train station right after he has been brooding about his shoulder injury

What I really really liked about these scenes is that every single time Sousuke was having a down moment, or a vulnerable moment in relation to his shoulder injury, Gou happened to be there and witness it. It may be coincidental that she always happen to be in a place and time when Sousuke wasn’t feeling great. I was initially wondering why she never approached him in the moment and then you look at Sousuke’s pissy face and that’s probably why lmao. Regardless, Gou probably knew his state of mind, and hence decided to leave him to it. The look she gave him was more out of curiosity rather than concern but because the anime never went into detail about what she was thinking at the time, it’s hard to tell. Most important thing is that Gou was there during his vulnerable moments, before anyone knew of his shoulder injury...

Jelly Momo

Ngl, I absolutely love Momo, not only because he’s a hilarious character but because Sousuke always unintentionally cockblocks him when it comes to Gou. I just find it so funny. The poor thing. And Gou just has absolutely zero interest in him....

The thing is, Momo knows that Sousuke constantly gets in the way...it has happened several times already and I think he is also beginning to realise that Gou is probably quite fond of Sousuke, hence his very vocal comment about paying attention to him. i just love it how the anime framed it like this because you know it’s a running gag going on between all three.

Also, the look on Sousuke’s face in that above scene...you can’t see it but if you go back and watch it, and it’s only a split second when Momo moves his head, it’s absolutely hilarious. He legit has a “wtf” look on his face 😂

Just going to put this above scene here where Momo gets dragged away. Poor thing. I think at this point, Gou is catching on to something with Sousuke...

After Momo bombarded Gou with his hilarious hobbies, these two just ended up alone together ❤️

Season 3′s ending credits depict a lot of parallels between characters as well as some level of competitiveness between them. So maybe it is just a coincidence here but Sousuke and Momo together probably continues to depict the hilarious running gag between them and Gou. LOL!

Gou’s Concern

No really, when Sousuke walked out and decided to swim with his shoulder injury, the concerned look on Gou’s face. This was the first time in the whole entire series (season 3 included) where Gou showed this much concern...my heart. 

When there are problems in the Iwatobi swim club related to a character, a lot of the issues and concerns revolved around the other characters helping each other (Gou would be excluded). She is just a supporting character that does not get a lot screen time. Aside from her managerial duties, we don’t see too much of her during important/significant moments for a main character - unless she is interacting with Rin in some way. So her very minimal “interactions” with Sousuke during his vulnerable moments are considered somewhat significant (even if she just saw him walking by) because they are more symbolic than anything.

Off Screen Interactions

Okay, the amount of times Sousuke talked about Gou...they clearly talk a lot off screen and whether that be through text messages, phone calls or meeting up, I believe they are a combo of all three. I have several reasons to believe that they do hang out together quite a bit. 

1. The amount of times Gou keeps bumping into Sousuke randomly (ngl the times the audience sees is probably only a fraction to what actually goes on behind the scenes) 

2. In the later episodes, they have been seen walking home together. 

3. Some of the things Sousuke said to Rin about Gou would warrant more of a face to face conversation rather than something through text message. I mean unless they talk on the phone (that would be so fucking adorable aaaaahhhhhh) 

4. In the CD drama, they have been shown to hang out just the two of them over mediocre stuff so I am sure that would have met up and talked more about other more deeper things with each other

Gou obviously confided in Sousuke how lonely she felt because her older bro was neglecting her

LOOK AT THE AMOUNT OF TIMES HE TALKED ABOUT HER! That obviously indicated they do interact quite some bit off screen. Judging from the things they talked about, it sounded like she was filling him in with what’s going on in her life..and you know just every day stuff... I love it! They are so casual and so comfy with each other <33333333

Platinum Abs

Not counting the fact that I almost choked on my drink when I saw this for the first time, but I was curious to see what Gou thought of them. So I waited....and waited...and waited...and it never came, despite the fact that she was in his presence multiple times when he was looking like this....

And I came across several older posts that pointed this out and it totally validated what I felt as well. Gou, the muscle obsessive freak has not spoken a word about Sousuke’s nationally ranked swimmer’s perfect body. WILL YOU JUST LOOK AT THEM? HE’S FUCKING MASSIVE!! Like..all over....holy shit just look at those guns...like damn fine man.... anyways... so Gou, why have we not heard a single word from you about them? To her, they are probably the best of all the characters in the series ...

And my guess is... Sousuke is most likely special to her. She does not see him as merely an object of muscles (much like she does with the other characters including her own bro) but something more. And whether that is consciously or unconsciously, the outcome is still the same. Because when someone means a lot to you and if you like someone in that way, you are less likely to see them as an object of some fantasy...

The OVA

Yo not gonna leave this one out and if there is anything that really pushed this ship further, it was definitely the OVA.

Sousuke is so pedantic about what people call him (unless you are Nagisa...which he has almost no words for ...). So the only one who can add “kun” to his name is Gou <333333

I’m not going to delve too deeply into this as

1. It is self explanatory

2. A lot of people have already discussed this topic

But, overprotective Sousuke being a sweet guy and lending Gou his jacket is something out of a shojo manga. Even more shojo is that he;

1. Did it himself and not just giving the jacket to her

2. Got overly pissed off at Ai for drenching Gou

3. COULDN’T LOOK AT GOU WHEN HE GAVE HER THE JACKET....like the whole time....ksfklafkhgdshgjdsh

Sousuke isn’t very good with expressing himself, so this scene, out of his own sheer awkwardness, really played into the intimate nature of this potential ship. I’ll explain more later...

P. S. LOOK AT HOW ENORMOUS THE JACKET LOOKS ON GOU...she so schmol (and Sousuke is just massive...). Legit they look like a couple on a date...

Sunset Meeting

Ngl when I first started watching Season 3, this scene came out so unexpectedly I had to replay it just so it would process in my mind that it happened. But aside from the fact that it was framed in a shojo manga kinda way i.e. Gou running towards Sousuke, then walking together in the sunset and then talking about deep and meaningful stuff...you get the drift...I absolutely loved it how Gou was the very first person Sousuke told about his surgery’s success. Omg..swimming and the success of the surgery just meant so much to him and he was already telling Gou about it...

Everything about the particular scene was so so intimate. The scenery, the conversation, the tone of voice, the colours used......everything! Just look at how happy Gou is....

And damn they walked home together ... my heart cannot take it anymore aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

Running Gag

I did notice this trend going on but it didn’t cross my mind until I read a post that it was like a thing between SouGou. Honestly it is so so cute! Gou has this excited pitched, giggle-ish, admiration-like tone every single time she calls out and runs to him. It’s so sweet. You actually never hear it ever when she talks or calls out to any other characters in the series, so Sousuke is indeed very special to her <3

Also...something about Sousuke walking alone and Gou either noticing him or running to him...

Gou and Momo’s Mistaken Date vs. Gou and Sousuke’s Mistaken Date

In Part 4 of the Free Take Your Marks movie, Rin walks by a burger shop and noticed Momo and Gou sitting together and having lunch. He mistakenly thought they were going out on a date, and before the rest of the Iwatobi team could come to the table after order their food, Rin gets a call from Sousuke telling him that he cannot find his way. So Rin dashes off to save Sousuke still with the misunderstanding. The episode is absolutely hilarious on Rin’s part.

Then in the CD drama, there is a story titled “Sousuke and Gou’s secret date.” Of course it is a case of ‘mistaken identity’ but as I stated earlier, these two would hang out with each other to discuss superficial things, so I am certain that they do hang out with each other on occasions to talk about other more deep and meaningful things as well. Considering the things Sousuke has been telling Rin about Gou, you can make an educated guess that SouGou do have their alone times quite a bit off screen.

Anyways, so this is the part where I believe Free has its subtle romantic undertones. I mentioned in my toxic masculinity post that when the male characters were being vulnerable, hugged or cried, that it does not necessarily mean they are gay, or that there would be any romantic development between the characters. You could say the same with SouGou as well, however, the difference lies in how the anime framed it, and the biggest tip that pushed from just a friendship kind of thing to a teasing of a potential romantic thing is the “secret date” part and the running gag between Gou, Sousuke and Momo. We know Momo clearly has romantic interest in Gou, and the interesting thing is...Sousuke being placed in between Gou and Momo numerous times throughout the anime to signify that there is a potential triangle going on. Does this make sense? It is the nuances as a viewer that you can pick up, and it is even more so if you can understand Japanese. I sometimes switch the subtitles off and really just watch what they say and it’s a completely different view. Hard to explain...but that is the vibe I get.

Extras

I just had to put this scene in. JUST LOOK AT GOU LOOKING AT SOUSUKE OMG. She totally loves him <3 YOU CAN’T TELL ME OTHERWISE!!!

I always love me some official artwork of these two, and disregarding the fact that there are four other guys around and Nagisa just being the little helper he is, SouGou wrestling is something I just need to have in my life <3 I just love the light subtle tease between these two. Thank you KyoAni! And them holding hands... I’m ded...

Sousuke’s Feelings

This is purely interpretation based on what I have seen so far and of course when I am writing a full post like this about SouGou, it does help piece the puzzle together a little more. Tbvh, I strongly believe that Sousuke has repressed feelings for Gou. My reasoning is quite complex. Sousuke is a bit of a difficult character. He is aloof, serious and can be standoffish. He is not good with expressing his emotions and feelings, yet he does questionable things if he thinks it is for the best for those he cares about. Obviously noticeable when he lied to Rin about his shoulder injury, and of course completely stopped talking to Rin and Gou after being injured. But he deeply cares for those around him, and will go out of his way to help, even if it is to the detriment of his own welfare. 

Sosuke hanging out with Gou and talking to her and being around her is already an aspect of his kindness, that he would do this to anyone he cares about. But what I meant about repressed feelings for Gou was more evident in the OVA, and I think that is where the slight nuances come into play. Sousuke is overprotective of Gou and he most likely sees her as a little sister, considering he grew up with her alongside his best friend. But I think when it comes down to more intimate moments i.e. giving Gou his jacket and just not being able to look at her, I think that small nuance does give a small insight into Sousuke’s feelings for Gou. It may be minute but it’s there, and the way the anime framed that scene, it evoked a host of response from the viewers. That in itself is enough for viewers to make a determination as to what Sousuke might be feeling towards Gou at the time ... and it was probably more than a platonic kind of way...

Just to let you know that Sousuke most likely would not act on these feelings because of who he is as a person. And if there is any possibility that things could go awry between him and Rin that concerns Gou, Sousuke would not put their friendship in jeopardy. So if there was ever a way that Sousuke’s repressed feelings for Gou could surface, it would be if Gou initiates.

Gou’s Feelings

If you read through this entire damn thesis so far I think you could see that Gou’s feelings for Sousuke is a lot more overt. She is so incredibly fond of Sousuke and it is just the way she behaves around him, speaks to him and looks at him. It sends a different vibe comparatively to when she interacts with any of the other male characters. Because Gou is a side character, as viewers we don’t get to see much of her, her development or her thoughts and feelings, especially in relation to Sousuke. 

Concluding Thoughts

What an incredibly long post. I didn’t realise how long it was until I scrolled back up. But really, this was so fun to write. I enjoy writing about side characters and the little hints that anime and manga give us as viewers. This is the best thing about storytelling, that is so much more than what you see before you.

The great thing about SouGou is the incredibly compatibility they have with each other. They have a lot of the common tropes found in anime that sets them up for a future pairing. I mean,, Free is not a romance genre so there wouldn’t be any emphasis placed on how one character feels about another in a romantic sense. So the anime has placed some gentle teasing in the background with its frame (usually what you see in shojo manga for example), official artworks, and CD dramas. It’s a very subtle undertone that the viewers would have to dig through and pick up out of the mass of fanservice and the storylines of the main characters. Yet this is the reason why I love KyoAni because of its numerous layers of stories and undertone!

In my opinion, if there was ever any pairing that comes out of Free, it would definitely be SouGou - it’s because the way the anime (and probably the light novel as well) set them up and emphasised on important aspects of their relationship without going into detail about it.

I gotta say, the reason why I love these two so much is because they remind me so much of TsukiYachi pairing from Haikyuu. There are parallels between the characters and I think I just enjoy shipping ones with that level of complexity and compatibility - the whole opposites attract kinda thing (and the height difference).

A/n: I mean I warned you that I was going for the angst this month

Haru-> Has it always been this quiet? Has the water always felt this...empty? Did you go through it too? Did you suffer too because you had to swim with him?

Makoto-> When he spots on the rails of his apartment complex, the stray cat the two of you had taken care of since it was a kitten. It’s when it comes to nuzzle itself under Makoto’s fingers, do the tears start to trail down his cheeks as a smile plays on his lips—but it’s strained...because you’re not here.

Nagisa-> He was in tears the moment you had said goodbye, but it was when he had been out on an ice cream run that he felt his heart break when he saw you in the arms of another, smiling and laughing. Was the joke even that funny? He was so sure he didn’t miss when he could entertain you. Nagisa turns around with a sad smile, leaving behind the broken ice cream cone. Atleast you were happy.

Rei-> He’s sitting on a bench one day when fluttering wings of blue and black catch his eye. The butterfly comes to rest and tickle his nose. He looks to his side, “(y/n), look isn’t it beau-”

Gou,

The future is a very scary place. It’s like the ocean, full of mystery as you delve deeper into the unknown waters. You can study all you want, learn about the different levels of the sea and the creatures that reside in it, but once you’re in, you’ll definitely still be surprised.

I never told you this, but I’m scared of the ocean. I think you saw that I was a bit hesitant during our 3-kilometer ocean training, but it was because I was afraid. I know for a fact that you, too, have a bit of history with what the ocean’s powers can do, right? Rin has mentioned it countless of times.

You see, I lost a friend in that storm. There was this old man, maybe he was just a tad bit older than your dad at that time, and he used to fish in the same waters your dad did. I’d always meet him at the dock and we’d laugh, he’d share stories about the sea and marveled at how vast the waters were, good enough for him to support his livelihood. And I, as a child, would listen in awe. Back then, the ocean was a very interesting place and I wanted to see for myself what kind of magic it held.

We’d always meet up at the summer festival, and in one of those festivals. I wanted some goldfish but I ended up already spending my money on sweets and other things. To my surprise, this nice fisherman taps me on the shoulder and gives me two fish; turns out, he’d played it a couple of times and bagged two at once, and decided to give it to me before the festival ended. I really was thankful and valued the gift and I took care of those fish.

And then the storm came. You already know the details, because you were also there, right?

He was one of the fishermen that died in that storm. I got scared, Gou. I got scared that the ocean’s powers would really go so far as to take my friend. The thing that I thought was something like heaven, turned out to be hell that could engulf anything in an instant. So I developed this fear of the ocean, because I knew that the undiscovered things would definitely eat us whole.

I was scared, even during our training.

But I got over it, little by little. Because the ocean, like all the other bodies of water, is just, well, a body of water. It holds so much mystery, but if you swim in the ocean, you just swim in its first layer. You don’t have to look down yet, if that isn’t your goal. And during that training, I was with Rei, with Haru, and with Nagisa. We were all together, training and getting stronger for the competitions we wanted to win. That was the goal, not discovering the hidden powers of the ocean.

I’m bringing this up because I feel that this is a perfect comparison to what the future holds for you, Gou.

The future is an ocean filled with the unknown. Only if you get the right equipment, the correct reason, should you explore its depths, but for now, you can first touch the water along the shore and swim across its shallow layers. The future is a vast space of possibilities, and you are not obliged to explore each and every opportunity all at once. You have to take the opportunity that you know you’ll love, and you’ll do well in it. It’ll be hard at first, you’ll end up taking one thing after another, but at the end of the day, you won’t tire yourself and scare yourself with multitasking when you can’t.

I’m not saying that you can’t multitask, Gou. What I mean is that you don’t have to choose every option that’s handed to you. You’re a great person with a great mind and I know you’re smart enough to decide on an initial path that would then lead you to greatness. Your brother Rin’s chosen a path that’s going to set him up til he retires, because he’s been doing it since we were basically children. It’s the same with Haru. The point is, that your starting point can be your stepping stone to either a better opportunity or your whole entire working life.

I guess I got the basics down? I’m sure that you don’t talk about this with Rin, since he’s been worried about you and I’ve been telling him a lot that you’re asking me the things you can’t ask him because you feel like you resonate more with what I’m going to take in university. Don’t worry, he doesn’t really mind that you’re asking me instead of him. He feels grateful, even, because, after all the things we’ve all been through, he’s still struggling to find that certain connection with you as your older brother. I guess it’s like a three-way between you, Rin, and I. You asking me for advice for the future, and him asking me for advice on being a brother. I, in return, ask Rin about how to handle Haru properly, and I turn to you for things about the guys that I couldn’t pinpoint before.

With us parting ways like this, I just want to make sure that I get to write everything that I want to say to you. I mean, we’re still going to meet up. You guys are bound for nationals and I know it, so we’re going to cross paths again in Tokyo. But still - there are a lot of things I want to say.

I’ve been really thinking hard on how I should say the things in person, so I ended up writing this for you.

Thank you for everything, Gou. For being a capable manager, for insisting that we start a swim club and offering to join just for us to be signed up as an official club in school, to your hours of research and your dedication to our improvement - really, we couldn’t have done it without you. As the Captain, you’re my right-hand woman in every decision that we made for the club, and I must say that things turned out well for us in the end right? We get to go to nationals, you got Rei’s swimming down to the last stroke, and we’ve all improved our times. All because of your hard work in research and your determination to push us to be the better swimmers we could be.

You’re a great girl, Gou. You’re just really inspiring, even to me, as an upperclassman. I don’t get to talk about life like this to anyone, except maybe for Haru. And I can really feel that you’ve matured for your age. You had to be there for your mom when Rin was away, right? In all those years, you had to grow up fast, take care of your mom, and when Rin came back, take care of him as well. On top of that, you took care of all of us, and had only the best intentions for everyone.

In between the technical aspect of our companionship in the club, we’re friends to the very core. I’m just really happy I got to meet you two years ago, and actually become your friend. I have to say, I’m really not that good with interacting with girls, and I’m a bit nervous, going out to the real world like this, but being friends with you may have built the confidence I needed for college, because I know for a fact that I need to interact with people at some point, and not just the people I’m close with. I guess I have to thank you for that, too.

But even if I meet other people, even if Haru and I will be in Tokyo and Rin will be in Australia, nothing will ever change.

You’ll still be the first girl I’ve ever connected with on a personal level.

With all that said, I just hope in the one year you won’t see me often, that you won’t forget me. Or the things we’ve talked about. The conversations with you have influenced some life-changing decisions I made during my senior year and I’m really happy about these decisions. It’s going to be hard, but it will be worth it.

And hey, for what it’s worth, I’ll wait for you in Tokyo, okay? I know we both want to surpass Haru’s cooking skills, so I’ll stroll around and find cafes that have good desserts and snacks we can imitate when you finally graduate. Rushing through the doors of Iwatobi High School with your delicious chocolate treat between your teeth you made a beeline for the boys, and one girl, you’d grown so fond of.

“Sorry I’m so late I was held up at the sweets shop.”

“You know eating so many sweets in a day isn’t good for you (Y/N)!” Makoto scolded and the rest of the boys, and Gou, solemnly nodded behind him. “You’ll make yourself sick!”

“Plus how do you ever expect to develop glorious muscles if you keep eating such junk!”

Taking another super sized bite of your chocolate bar you shrugged and made your way to the locker rooms to commence practice.

“Hey, this is important! (Y/N)-Chan!”

A week later and you were on deck with the Samezuka boys changed into your swimsuit, and ready to swim. Reaching into the drawstring bag that was leaning against the wall next to you, you fished around inside for the sugary goodness that was your happiness.

A family sized Hershey Bar.

Greedily unwrapping it you caught eyes with Rin who was staring at you with disbelief.

You lowered the Hershey bar from your lips, “What?”

“You’re seriously going to eat that?”

“Yeah, why wouldn’t I?”

“No, no you do what you want, but just so you know when you cramp up and drown out there I’m not coming to save you.”

You shrugged and around a mouthful of your lifeline managed to mumble out a, “that’s fine by me.”

Momo rushed up from behind and threw his arm around your shoulders, “Hey what’s up (Y/N)-Chan! Oh, is that chocolate, can I have a piece?”

Shrugging you held the wrapper out to Momo.

“No, no chocolate for you! I don’t want to hear about how your cramping up during practice and that you ‘can’t go on any longer!’”

“But (Y/N)-Chan gets some!”

“And if her team wants her to sink like a load of bricks and die that’s on them!”

“Awww…”

About two hours later joint practice was finally wrapping up and you were hoisting yourself out of the pool and into the woman’s locker room.

The group stared after her as she walked away and the silence was quickly broken by pouty Nagisa.

“I can't believe you let her eat all those sweets and not me anymore. It’s not fair.”

Makoto's face flushed nervously and he stood ram rod straight. “You don't need any more sugar than you already get! You’re hyper enough already.” He added as a side note.

“But still-!”

Sousuke cut in, “I just can’t believe she didn’t die of cramps during practice.”

Aiichirou nodded frantically, “She has a steel stomach, I would never be able to eat that much candy before swimming!”

Rei pushed up his glasses, “Yes it is rather odd that she never gets sick from it, and it can’t be that healthy.”

“Come to think of it as kids I never really saw her eat anything other than candy.” Haru’s soft voice spoke up.

“Forget about what she ate as a child I just wanna know how she keeps toned with all that junk in her system.” Rin frowned.

“If I had to guess I would say it’s a mixture of her individual morning practices, dry land, after school practice and the time she puts in at the weight room after.” The boys turned and stared at Gou’s thoughtful expression.

“Too much work for me, it’s time I’d rather spend with you Gou.” Momo wiggled his brows and tried to slide an arm around her shoulders but was swiftly intercepted by Rin.

A hearty laugh was let out and Makoto clutched his sides, “I guess we’ll just never know.”

“Never know what?” A voice from behind piped up.

Nagisa wrapped an arm around (Y/N) shoulders, “Why, how you do it (Y/N)-Chan!” He beamed and lead her away as the group was left behind, fully intending to try and trade some candy goods with her.

Quick to notice Momo untangled himself from Rin’s hold and ran after the two.

“Hey, wait you guys I want in too!”

Rin sighed, pressing his palm to your forehead. His touch was warm and inviting, you sniffed a little, rubbing your eyes.“Just as I thought, you have a fever.” He moved his hand away, shaking his head. “Geez, I told you you should of worn a coat.”“It didn’t feel that cold.” You sniffed yet again. “I thought it’d be alright.”“Well now you have to rest. I can get you some hot soup if you’d like?” Rin turned to walk away, but you reached out, grabbing the back of his shirt.“No…” You mumbled. “I-I just want you.” Rin faced you again, his face was red, and the moment he laid eyes on you it only got redder.“Oh! But I don’t want you to catch my cold.” You held up the blanket you were curled under, and hid your face. “Maybe you should go home.” You closed your eyes only to feel a deep weight pressing against your side as Rin got under the blanket next to you. He gently pulled your body so you were resting fully against his torso, his head resting slightly above yours. His arms were locked tight around your waist. You let yourself sink back into his body. It had been a little while since you’d been able to cuddle with Rin like this. “You’re warm.” Rin’s voice sent a tingle through you, his breath was tickling your neck. He squeezed you a little in a playful manner, and you looked up at his face. “I love you, you know.”You were taken aback by his words, your cheeks becoming rosier than they already were. “I-I love you too!” You placed your hands on his, stroking them gently.He chuckled, resting his head on yours, his arms still firmly around you, holding you close, keeping the heat between you both.He took away one of his hands to begin playing with your hair, twirling it round his finger, making little curls which dropped out the moment he let go.“Can we stay here forever?” You murmured, a little sleepily. “It’s cold outside. It’s warm here.”You began moving around so your body was facing Rin entirely instead. You clutched at his shirt, pressing your hands to his body, your face soon after, burying yourself in his chest. Instinctively, Rin adjusted his arms so they could wrap around you in your new position, which felt a lot closer than the original.With all your weight on him, he slid down a little so he was lying on the couch, you resting on his chest. You could feel his heartbeat. It was fast.He ran his fingers through your hair a little before continuing to hold you.“Sorry…” He whispered. “I want to do this.”You were confused at first, but began to feel his hand touching your skin. He had pushed up your shirt so we could rest his hand on your side and feel your skin. He ran his fingers up and down your skin, and you wrapped your own arms around his neck so you could cuddle him tightly. “We should do this more often.” You could almost hear his grin.“I’d like that.” Rin gently took hold of one of your hands, bringing it up to his face, to kiss it softly.“You’re not normally like this Rin.” You were trying to tease him, but were too tired to play it off properly. “I thought you’d be more aggressive.”Rin’s lips tickled your fingers. “Mmmm, well… Right now, I just want to hold you. I want to keep you warm, and here with me. I can like cuddling too.”Closing your eyes, you felt your body draining. “Is it okay if I fall asleep?” You didn’t get a response. Or maybe you did, but you didn’t know as only moments after you had spoken did sleep completely encompass you.Rin looked down at you as you slept, he could see your chest slowly moving up and down. He placed one arm around you, and one behind his head so he was comfortable. He stared at the ceiling and smiled to himself.“I’m probably going to get ill. But, if getting ill means more moments like this, then I’m looking forward to it.”

Momo -

It had been a long day, you were feeling rather drained after studying hard. The only thing that made you feel relaxed was that you were now with Momo, spending some time together to unwind.The TV was flickering away in front of you, and Momo was in the process of putting his bag, and jacket away.You were spread on the couch, leaning back on a pile of cushions to make yourself as comfortable as possible to ease your stress. Your body sunk into the pillows and you sighed with relief.“Want me to give you a massage ____-san?” Before you knew it Momo was sat on the floor next to the couch, looking up at you eagerly.You giggled a little. “No, it’s okay. A hug would be nice though.”Without hesitation, Momo was making his way onto the couch. You moved your legs to make room, curling up so you were tucked into the corner of the seat.He climbed up so he was next to you, and he opened his arms wide, a big grin on his face.You practically leapt into his arms, sending him toppling backwards so he was pressed against the arm of the chair.“Sorry!” You laughed a little.“No worries!” He scratched his head. “Were you ready for this hug?”You lay with your head on this chest, and nodded. “It’s been a long day. I’m just happy to be with you now.”He moved slightly, positioning himself so he was more comfortable, and wrapped an arm round you. It was a tight hug, but they always were with Momo. He seemed to like squeezing you. He often said it was because you were so adorable he just couldn’t help himself. You smiled, and closed your eyes. Finally you could feel safe and relaxed.“Wow….” You looked up to see Momo blushing. “You’re so cute ____-San.”“You always say that.” You pouted.“Because you are!” Momo poked at your cheek playfully. I’m a little cold.” You admitted. “Ah I’m sorry!” Momo changed his arms positions so they were both wrapped firmly around you instead. “Is that better?”“A little…”“I have an idea!” Without any warning, he spun you round so you were lay on your side instead. Your back was pressed against the couch, and you were now facing Momo who’s back was facing the outside of the couch. You were pressed tightly against him, his arms still around you. The heat surrounding you both had grew. You were now covered in a warm blanket that tickled at your skin.“That’s better.” You reached up, taking hold of Momo’s shirt. “Let’s stay like this?”“That’s alright by me!” Momo held you as tight as he could without hurting you. You were so close to him you were practically one being. Your lips were positioned near to this neck. You noted how easy it would be to lean forward a little and plant a few kisses. You were considering so when instead you felt kisses landing on your own.“Momo….?” You called out.“I read your mind.” He planted a few more kisses on your neck, a hand in your hair, grasping at it a little, before he stopped, and patted down your hair which was now a little messed up. “You must be tired, would you like to sleep?”“Ummmm..” “I’ll still be here when you wake up, I promise!”You laughed. > I don't really know much nor take notice of him, but my impression of him is that he might be blessed with Cryo vision. He did mention Tokyo is his second home, thus why I think he fits by coming from Liyue, a nation of contracts and business.

> The Matsuoka family moves around a lot during Gou's and Rin's childhood. And she definitely has Cryo vision to mess around with the Iwatobi guys. Like freezing the lake to avoid Haru from swimming during the winter, creating ice paths to let kids play on the ice and other things.

> She looks like Geo Sucrose. She'll be with Timaeus instead of the KoF. She'll throw rocks at the baddies from a far, unintentionally playing pranks on the hilichurls. She'll be Sucrose's best friend too. They'd create the weirdest and questionable things ever.

- Rin Matsuoka - Vision: Pyro Weapon: Claymore Affiliation: Inazuma // Fontaine

> He has pyro vision 100%! Passionate with his dreams to the point he might accidentally burn something. Probably evaporate the water at times. Gou will be the one who would help him maintain the water level. She'd freeze liquid while he melts them.

- Sousuke Yamazaki - Vision: Geo Weapon: Claymore Affiliation: Inazuma // Liyue

> Rock hard muscle man carries a claymore like his buddy. Geo vision user indeed. He can also be a healer and DPS like Noelle! He'd be Rin's best partner in the team aside from Haru and Gou. Since Rin and Sousuke were from Inazuma, I can see them returning and being part of the resistance with Sangonomiya. They'd fight for freedom together (and making sure that Rin doesn't explode like a volcano)

- Aiichirou Nitori - Vision: Dendro Weapon: Sword Affiliation: Sangonomiya Troupe, Inazuma

> Idk why, but Nitori looks like he would have Dendro vision. I see him as a person who likes nature and would be more of a healer and support. He'd be with the medical team of the resistance. And making sure Momo behaves.

- Momotarou Mikoshiba - Vision: Electro Weapon: Polearm Affiliation: Sangonomiya Troupe, Inazuma

> Boy is so explosive he may have had created Overload with his brother or Rin. He's exciting but also has limits. At least he listens to the general and the higher ups, making him one of the best fighter in the resistance.

~ HIDAKA U ~

- Seijuurou Mikoshiba ~ Vision: Pyro Weapon: Claymore Affiliation: Sangonomiya Troupe, Inazuma

> Mikoshiba Chaos number 1. Do I need to say more? Chaos with his siblings? Why not. Not only that, he's one of the best captains in the resistance, leading his team with full victory, training them to be the best of the best. He received recognition from both Gorou and Kokomi. Was probably one of the Tenryou Commission officers but betrayed them once the Vision Hunt Decree happened.

- Asahi Shiina - Vision: Pyro Weapon: Polearm Affiliation: Liyue

> Probably the son of one of the commissioners in Liyue. And most likely one of the best adventurers of Liyue. Also a promoted officer of the Millelith. Like Seijuurou, he's a good leader. He may be reckless, but his chaotic and lively attitude brings positivity in the team work.

- Kisumi Shigino - Vision: Anemo Weapon: Sword Affiliation: Fontaine // Liyue

> This guy is so carefree but when it comes to business or leading his adventure team, he's serious. As a reference that his uncle works with a company that's gotta do with housings, his family probably is a part of a commissioner thingy and has contacts with the Liyue Qixing. He's like Tohma in a way, kinda like the middle man or a fixer. We need him to deal with complicated things.

~ SHIMOGAMI U ~

- Tsubasa Hoshikawa - Vision: Electro Weapon: Polearm Affiliation: Doushin, Inazuma

> He's a minor character but he shows good leadership by how he talks to his teammates. I imagine him being one of the generals of the Tenryou Commission

- Ikuya Kirishima - Vision: Cryo Weapon: Bow Affiliation: Tenryou Commission, Inazuma

> I was so close to imagining him using a claymore as a reference of Razor. I headcanon cryo characters to be someone perfectionist in a way, thus why I think Ikuya might be a Cryo vision bearer.

- Hiyori Toono - Vision: Geo Weapon: Sword Affiliation: Kanjou Commission, Inazuma

> Kanjou commission clearly shows how much they wanted to manipulate traveler upon them reaching Inazuma. And that's what and how I view Hiyori as. He's cheeky, good with words. He might be like Tohma, a fixer, at the same time manipulating people with taxes and whatever Kanjou Commission does. He might even block outlanders with his Geo vision.

~ OTHERS ~

- Natsuya Kirishima - Vision: Pyro Weapon: Claymore Affiliation: Tenryou Commission (former), The Crux (current)

> My man Natsuya travels a lot. He's like Kazuha, the wandering ronin. I can definitely see him as Beidou's second in command in the ship. He's also a good leader, a caring and kind individual. His pyro vision provides warmth in the cold nights in the sea. If this guy even dare, he would even dive into the sea to swim.

- Nao Serizawa - Vision: Dendro Weapon: Catalyst/Bow/Sword Affiliation: Bubu Pharmacy, Liyue

> I can see him working as Baizhu's disciple. I don't know why I see him having dendro vision, but he just screams dendro. He's majoring as sports medic of some sorts, thus I see him working with Bubu Pharmacy along with Qiqi. He would expect Natsuya and other characters to visit him to ask for medicines.

- Isuzu Mikoshiba - Vision: Anemo Weapon: Sword Affiliation: Sangonomiya Troupe, Inazuma

> Mikoshiba Chaos number 2. With anemo, she can apply swirl to overload from her brothers' visions. Following Seijuurou's footsteps, she strives to become a good leader and role model. Kokomi would even ask her to be her assistant. Big bro Mikoshiba is proud of little sister Mikoshiba.

- Kaede Kinjou - Vision: Electro [Hydro; Delusion] Weapon: Claymore Affiliation: Fatui, Snehznaya

> idl this guy. I definitely see him with the fatui. His few targets would be Ikuya, Rin, Haruka, Sousuke and Asahi. I can see him fooling around with them with so many ruthless tactics he has under his sleeves. Not to mention how aggressive he can be. Scaramouche weaker version.

- Albert Volandel - Vision: Cryo/Hydro Weapon: Polearm Affiliation: Fontaine

> I view him fighting as gracefully as Rei, maybe even more. But as for his vision, I'm unsure if he would be blessed with cryo or hydro.

KnB Commentary: Kise Ryouta and the Curse of Being “Pretty Boy” in Shonen Anime

Cheerful, extroverted, happy-go-lucky and sunshine with a face, Kise Ryota is the screen ikemen in Kuroko no Basket. Although Kise is a cult favourite, but I think he is sometimes pushed aside with Momoi. In KnB people tend to focus more on the other GoMs rather than Kise. Here is my take on how Kise Ryota’s character and his types are scorned in Shonen Manga.

Shonen and Shojo manga revolve around two different dimensions: while shonen manga focuses on friendships, journeys and solid characteristic developments, shojo manga focuses generally on the romance parts, interpersonal relationships, appearance and struggles of the ordinary main character. Both manga lauds ordinariness and makes the ordinary extra-ordinary one just by showing that they have the possibility to be sublime. While Shojo manga greatly appreciates male beauty to the point of worship, Shonen sort of looks down on male beauty: anyone who identifies himself as good looking, or wants to be good looking is put down by others around him. Let’s see how Kise fell into the same trap.

Kise is introduced in the story in a very Shojo manga fashion. He is looked from the female point of view of Seirin’s girl students as he walks down the main pathway of the school. That piece of scene almost reminded me Takumi Usui entering school in Kaichou wa Maid Sama. From that point, wherever he goes he is greeted and surrounded by female population en large, much to the annoyance of his team members and opponents. Similar to the effect of “male gaze”, exists a “female gaze” which supposedly decides the desirability of a boy, especially in a high school setting. Kise, being handsome by the contemporary Japanese standards thus somewhat becomes the focus of the female gaze which makes males around him conscious and equally anxious. This phenomenon can be asserted with Momoi’s first encounter in the anime with Kuroko in Aida Gym pool. When Kuroko is hugged by a very beautiful and buxom Momoi Satsuki, the boys on his team lament: “I am so jealous of you Kuroko, hope you’ll die.” This was from a rather “harmless” and “normal” bunch of High School Basketballers, then just imagine how it effects the powerhouse boys with similar primal instinct and with greater ego. Thus Kise is treated with hot-and-cold attitude from males around him: be its his former teammates or current.

Kise is thus definitely an eligible bachelor and he surely knows it. However his self-awareness is without vanity or narcissistic edge. He is shown to be appreciative of female attention and not portray himself as a “playboy” or a “Scorer”; he is never addressed by anyone as “charan poran” (womanizer) in the series. This is a very contradictory attitude in Shonen anime. In shonen anime Male sexuality have very limited outlets: either one should be hyper-celibate and not pay attention to any organism marked as female, or one could be hyper-sexual to the point where they objectify the female form in a not so respectable manner--there is nothing in the Middle. In KnB Akashi, Kuroko and Midorima fall in the former end of spectrum while Haizaki Shogo and Aomine Daiki fall into the latter. Even dating and having girlfriend can make you the object of male scorn: in the anime Grand Blue, the department of Mechanical Engineer has a secret pact to stay single and when they find out that Iori Kitahara is living with Chisa (who is his cousin), they almost throw a violent fit. The male solidarity in Shonen thus ostricise the males who express appreciation in female company and show interest in courting and romance. Kise is snubbed in a similar manner for showing interest in a more feminine side. A same kind of snubbing was delivered to Hiroshi Fukuda of Seirin when he confessed on the rooftop that he wanted to get into the team for dating someone. In Free Momotarou Mikoshiba too, is either ridiculed or snubbed by his teammates for openly admitting to like Gou Matsuoka.

Out of all the Generation of Miracles characters, I think Kise is the most discriminated of all. His discrimination is the unsual kind: he is too important in the plotline to be comic relief like Takao and Izuki and he is too cheerful enough to be the bad boy. So what kind of discrimination does he face? He faces the discrimination for being good looking. Yes, there is a thing to be discriminated for being good looking. I also think Kise has been played within the character of being the “dumb blond”. He is portrayed as “pretty boy” and is expected to limit himself within it. His cheerful attitude is often met with cold shoulder and it is absolutely normalised within the storyline. Unlike other players who greet their rivals outside the courts with a broody attitude and slightly glaring eyes, Kise is the one who advocates “Yesterday’s rivals are today’s friends”. This is a very positive attitude to use in real life to keep the unhealthy competitiveness in check, but it is met with a scorn in the anime. It is shown as if being cheerful is the by-product of being good looking and the former should reflect the latter. This is perhaps the reason Kise’s playing style was completely sniped out of the scene from being “the best of all”. According to the society, a good looking person is just an eye-candy for anyone to drool over and if they have too much agency or talent people enviously comment “(s)he gets all that because of the looks”. It stems from the insecurity of one person having too much social power. The entire thing is very limiting. Kise is not only good-looking, he is acing his modelling career, a field which is highly demanding and taxing and at the same time he is doing well in basketball also in a nationally reputed school. These attributes somewhat gets overshadowed because he is somewhat only identified on screen for his looks. This fact is highlighted with his rivalry with Haizaki Shogo. Haizaki, instead of acknowledging Kise as a player, “marked his territory” by “boning” one of the girls claiming to be Kise’s girlfriend. 

Kise is very much aware of the fact that the swarming bunch of girls are intrinsic to his image, especially as a model and for this reason he tries to be respectful towards them. However, he does not identify the admiration of the fan-brigade with genuine affection. This is the core fact which Haizaki misinterprets about Kise that he derives power from the admiring fangirls. Haizaki despite being the antagonist is pretty much shares the similar prejudice with the people near Kise: that Kise Ryota begins and ends with looks and even his playing style “perfect copy” is less than original. But Kise is not the prejudices that surround him, he is affectionate, loyal and genuine with enough dedication to pursue what he loves. The ideal type of Kise : “a girl that won’t tie me down” says a lot about him. He is eager to meet someone who will respect him for who he actually is and not for his looks or fame. He too is someone who grew out of seeing the surface and judge to observe someone and understand---that is how he started to respect Kuroko at the first place. At the end, when he loses to Touou, he sheds the image of a “cool handsome boy” and cries like a baby in public; something his own captain Kasamatsu or his former teammate Midorima could not do. This shows a lot of courage and strength but also shows that expressing ugly emotions in a public can also be dignified and not necessarily be stripping to masculinity.
