There is an oven to the doll’s left. The text reads BC’s Doll Place: Happy Birthday Grace 2024!(With Subtitles).

In an era of bloated AAA game projects 5-10 years in development, few have been quite as worrying to fans as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, Bioware’s next game in the fantasy series that has been worked on for quite literally nine years, has undergone loads of reworks, restarts and a few different project leaders.
Now, according to insider Jeff Grubb, after a reveal of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf that BioWare has already announced for this summer, the goal is to get the actual game out in 2024. This would be six years after December 2018 when it was announced at The Game Awards.
Surely after all these years it would be ready to release, right? But the project has been baffling where again, after nine years of development and six years since its announcement it has shown fans nothing but concept art and very short teasers. Yes, this actual reveal is planned for this summer, but even if they’re planning a hyper-short marketing cycle, it still feels unlikely. A general rule is that for AAA games especially, whatever release date is first announced will not stick, and a delay is likely for 3-18 months for “polish,” which is usually the given reason. In short, after Dreadwolf’s incredibly tumultuous development, its just a little hard to believe they’d pull off a reveal spun almost immediately into a proper release.
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will also face serious headwinds from the comparisons it will no doubt evoke. If it comes out in 2024, that would be a year after Baldur’s Gate 3, one of the most acclaimed video games…ever, and an easy GOTY winner last year. Dreadwolf will no doubt have its storyline twists and turns and decisions to be made and party members to romance, but it will be endlessly stacked up against Baldur’s where there’s simply no way it can match it. And I doubt anyone is expecting it to even measure up to The Witcher 3, the must-play fantasy game released in 2015 when development for Dreadwolf began.
It's also unclear how EA’s second major round of layoffs last week may have impacted things. 50 BioWare employees were laid off last year, including a number working on Dreadwolf. BioWare has been in a major slump since the release and high profile failure of Anthem. A new Dragon Age and an upcoming Mass Effect game (again, only seen in nebulous teasers) feel like the studio is trying to return to its glory days but with few of the people who were present during those glory days, as the studio has been wholly transformed. And many would say not for the better.

hi Cat, can you share your thoughts/criticisms of DATV? i think the game is gonna flop.
hey nonners, idk. this is a complicated question. i mean, game's not even out yet so it's unfair to pass judgment on it. i can only judge bioware's approach to pre-release marketing. and i got a lot of thoughts on that.
honestly i think it will be a perfectly serviceable game and technically it will run well (i mean, it has been steam deck verified which tells me that performance was a big concern for devs). i don't think quality has much bearing on the love people can have for a game. and vice-versa. the people who are hyped to oblivion and want to preorder will like it. the people who hate it bc it has poc and queer and disabled characters will still hate it. people who analyze the game's mechanics and writing will dissect the game and be predisposed to finding things they dislike. over time opinions will mellow out and we'll see how the veilguard will be remembered.
i can't trust bioware to make an rpg that i will want to play after their last failures. different people will differ on where the string of failures started. from a quality standpoint my line is dragon age 2. me3 to me failed to deliver on the promise of the first 2 me games save for shining exceptions like the citadel dlc and javik. from a numbers standpoint the last successful game was inquisition which won goty in 2014 due to a serious lack of competition mostly, especially since witcher 3 was pushed back to 2015 (which pains me personally as that put it directly in bloodborne's path to goty in that year). thing is bioware seems to be doing all they can to avoid a flop. veilguard is bioware's hail mary after a string of failures. they are ditching the ea app to capture as many people as possible. the combat has fully careened into action, and although they keep telling us these will be the best companions ever, really, guys, the gameplay is more and more focused on the protagonist alone. the crpg roots of the series are getting cut down to attract a broader audience. perhaps at the cost of ostracizing some like me who enjoy the party-based, party-building mechanics like me.
how well this will go i don't know. on one hand i think bioware has been historically bad at showing the full scope to new and returning players. empress celene has been haunting the edges of the world since origins. the full grasp of her character is locked behind books. afaik some companions have been introduced already in supplemental materials. this sort of move didn't go well for ff15. on the other i think this game missed its window. the gaming landscape of today isn't the same as it was in 2014, and in 2014 the skyrim at home open world design was already outdated. i've been hearing about the crpg renaissance since 2016. i accompanied it. it remained a niche part of gaming until it didn't: baldur's gate 3 released last year to audience and critical acclaim. going forward i expect mainstream rpgs to take cues from bg3. and the mission based almost extraction shooter-esque design that veilguard seems to have might not land as well in 2024 as it would have in 2020.
eta: or it could go well, idk. morrowind and final fantasy were bethesda's and squaresoft's hail maries and saved those studios.
right now the marketing has missed the mark on me. it is patronizing and seemingly needs to punch down the previous da games to prop this one up. it concerns me that the game may be releasing in 2 months (as per jeff grubb) and we quite frankly haven't seen shit. just bioware telling us that trust me, these companions are deep. trust me, the combat is good. trust me, the city built on slave labor is totally the coolest one you've seen. everyone copies fromsoftware but they don't seem to learn to drop a trailer and shut up until they got more things of substance to show. and this isn't just a bioware issue.

How Rocksteady Studios Ruined the Batman Arkham Series with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
Tumblr media
Introduced on May 30 1939 Batman has been surrounded by many fans from all over the world (Including me). Thus it’s of no surprise that there have been multiple games ( 51 to be exact) on him but none have been as popular as the Batman Arkham series created by Rocksteady. In 2009 they created they're first Batman game called “Batman: Arkham Asylum”. The game Featured Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman and Mark Hamil as the voice of Joker many may recognise them as the voices of Batman and Joker in the Batman animated series as well as some Justice League movies and shows. This game redefined the combat system of many video games of that time and has been an inspiration to many others , the most popular being Insomniac's “Amazing Spider-Man” series which features similar gameplay mechanics. No wonder this game won Game Of The Year.
Tumblr media
The popularity of the first Batman game gave the studio enough confidence to create their second game roughly 2 years later in 2011 called “Batman: Arkham City” This time the game took a different approach. Instead of the linear playthrough of the first game the studio decided to make this game open-world. This change was one of the best changes the studio made as this game has been known to many as “one of the greatest Batman games ever”. Spoiler alert to anyone who hasn’t played the game The Joker dies in this game.
Tumblr media
Warner Brothers which is the parent company of DC Entertainment wanting to capitalize on the success of the Batman Arkham series created another game called “Batman: Arkham Origins” This game was meant to act as the beginning point of the Arkham series as this series shows a young batman Just beginning his vigilante career of being the guardian of Gotham city. This time it featured Troy Baker as the voice of Joker and Roger Craig Smith as the voice of young Batman. This game featured one of the best boss fights in the series i.e. against Deathstroke
Tumblr media
To close the Batman Arkham universe Rocksteady decided to create their last and final game ( or so we thought) with “Batman: Arkham Knight” in 2015 this game featured a new combat system i.e. we used the bat mobile. This game was the studio version of the Red Hood story by DC Comics. It again featured Kevin Conroy as the voice of the Batman and Troy Baker as the voice of the Red Hood. In my opinion this was another underrated game if it wasn’t for the technical difficulties the game faced.
Tumblr media
Roughly 5 years later Rocksteady Studios announced another Batman Arkham game called Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League. The game was meant to be released in the year 2022 but got delayed twice due to complaints by fans, The game finally came out in February of this year and in mine and a lot of people’s opinion ruined the series. This was for two reasons i.e. the Voice actor of Batman Kevin Conroy passed away from Intestinal cancer at the age of 66 therefore this was the last performance of the actor and the way the studio went about handling the death of Batman. The other reason was that the studio decided to make this game a live service. Simply, a player could spend real money to buy cosmetics and overpowered weapons from the game store
Tumblr media
The studio could only save themselves by erasing this story, saying that Batman isn't dead, or saying that this game is not part of the Arkham verse. This game does have two popular theories namely the heroes we see dying are clones created either by the Justice League themselves or by Brainiac. and the second is that the game will slowly bring back the dead heroes because of hidden voice recordings found in the game's files. Whatever they do I hope they make Rocksteady make the right choice.

Figured I'll make my own GOTY list for each year since 1993 (I haven't played nothing from 1992 and the list would look much worse with missing years)
Anyway, I'm not happy with it, but some of my choices are the only games I played from the year they came out. Then there were years where so many great games were released, it was hard to choose (i.e. between HL2, Halo 2 and MGS3)
1993 - Doom 1994 - System Shock 1995 - Tekken 2 1996 - Quake 1997 - Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee 1998 - Half-Life 1999 - Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver / Silent Hill 2000 - Perfect Dark 2001 - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty 2002 - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 2003 - Prince of Persia: Sands of Time 2004 - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 2005 - Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening 2006 - Bully 2007 - Halo 3 2008 - Mirror's Edge 2009 - Uncharted 2: Among Thieves 2010 - Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker 2011 - Batman: Arkham City 2012 - Far Cry 3 2013 - Grand Theft Auto V 2014 - Wolfenstein: The New Order 2015 - Yakuza 0 2016 - DOOM 2017 - RUINER 2018 - Red Dead Redemption 2 2019 - Days Gone 2020 - Black Mesa 2021 - Cruelty Squad 2022 - SIGNALIS
So hard to choose between Soul Reaver and Silent Hill. One captivates with its story and switching between realms, is a technical masterpiece, but is notoriously unfinished. The other one doesn't suit me that much genre-wise, but amazes me with its depth, soundtrack and scare factor even to this day.

Eddie's Best Things of 2022
Ok, I'm Eddie and here's the best of 2022.
Shout outs to getting kidney stones & covid week 1 of 2022! Truly an experience!!
Games? Plenty. Here we go.
#gotyforme Spider-Man PS4.
Why would I pick anything else? I threw aside my plan to 100% the Final Fantasy series. I completely put everything else on pause for this game. It made me smile. it made me cry. It was a love letter to all the admiration and comfort I find in Peter Parker.
Fighting GOTY? This year gave me quite a few new options and some renewed passion for old games. Amidst the newfound love for Tekken, I series I wrote off entirely after Tekken 3; and the weekly fight nights in Street Fighter V, the boys brought in some competition, or some semblance of it; and the game that made me start questioning what a hyper-focus is, Marvel vs Capcom 2; I found such an absolute joy in...
Tumblr media
DNF Duel!
I'll be honest, I wrote a whole thing about this game I guess Tumblr didn't like it coz it's all gone. Anyways... I think this is my first modern day kusoge. Several 50/50s, tons of movement options, and nearly infinite pressure. Only game I've gotten so comfortable in saying "Damn, I think I can break his guard and hit him with this really stupid easy 60% combo." In other words, holy shit - who made this for me?! I truly enjoyed all the god awful things you can do to your opponents. Besides Tekken 7, it's the only game to piss me off even when I won. Alt-F4 was my friend sometimes. I really hate how much I love this game. Shout outs to KUNO-ITCHY! She joins the ranks of "Eddie, come on" characters (Laura, Lidia, Magneto, Fox, Falco, and probably like Chrom). She carried me to Diamond. Carried me hard.

Next up?
Worst Game, 2022.
It was NFS: Unbound. I refunded it after 2 hours. Bought Mile Morales. I don't regret it. That's it.
Most Forgettable Game, 2022
3-way tie between Halo: Infinite, Multi-Versus, and Need for Speed (2015).
I don't have much to say. They were booted, we had some laughs, and we eventually stopped doing both those things. NFS2015 kind of gets a pass coz the handling was pretty good.
Ok, I'll just rapidfire the rest coz this is long.
Tumblr media
Best NPC - Stan Lee, Spider-Man PS4. I cried, ok.
Best New Old Game (Retro, but new to me)- Money Idol Puzzle Exchange. Thanks, Griffin.
Best Old New Game (New to me, but not from this year)- Persona 5 Royal. Or maybe Sekiro, but that's...
Game that Pissed Me Off the Most - Sekiro. Jesus, fuck. I still can't fucking finish that game.
Most Played Street Fighter - 3rd Strike. Probably, but more importantly..
Most Nostalgic Based Ass-Kicking - Marvel vs Capcom 2. Jesus, I love this game.
Tumblr media
The Worst Opponent - Andi in Tekken 7. Bro, "Your moves are faster" was the weakest rage-quit moment.
The Best Opponent - The 5-Minute Queues in DNF Duel.
Favorite Finish - Digimon World 3. Finally did it.
Tumblr media
Best Tetris - Magical Tetris Challenge
Best Mod - Emudeck on Steam Deck
I guess that's mostly everything. Shout out to Hinokakera Chaotic Eclipse.
Tumblr media
I was staring at this screenshot as I was thinking about my closing thoughts. This game is wild. She is naked.
Anyways. Good year overall, games wise. Not too many letdowns, mainly just Unbound. Next up, whenever I remember to do it...
Movies!

Elden Ring is Statistically “Better” Than Witcher 3 and The Last of Us
Tumblr media
At this point, what can be said about Elden Ring? Sekiro, one of the most well-known and well-received games of 2022, is the culmination of more than a decade's worth of labour by FromSoftware, which also created Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and other open-world games. Elden Ring may currently have the most awards of any game, ever, indicating that all of this effort has paid off. For transparency’s sake, we at PCGamesN did name Elden Ring Game of the Year 2022, and I even gushed about General Radahn’s boss fight in the PCGamesN PC Gaming Awards. Also, just because Elden Ring may have the highest number of awards ever given to a game, it doesn’t mean Elden Ring is the best game ever. Anyway, Elden Ring’s hall of fame status has been tallied up in a ResetEra thread, as the forum brings together the most-award games of the year and tracks who won what, all while discussing what they loved about the last year in games. This year, the honour of the most awarded game (as of January 3, 2023) goes to Elden Ring, and the results are astounding. Most GOTY awarded games of 2022 - Elden Ring (324) - God of War Ragnarok (74) - Immortality (6) - Pentiment (4) - Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (4) - A Plague Tale Requiem (3) - Citizen Sleeper (3) - Vampire Survivors (3) - Horizon Forbidden West (3) Elden Ring has taken an incredibly impressive lead, but what’s even more impressive is the apparent victory it has over previous years, as PlayStation’s The Last of Us Part 2 took home 322 awards in 2020, and The Witcher 3 got 281 in 2015. Elden Ring and The Last of Us Part 2 being so close raises some questions though, like how exactly does ResetEra track these numbers? Well, I have the answer. In previous years both GOTYblog and GameAwards.net were used, but this year ResetEra is tracking everything itself with input from users (with rules being largely the same as these sites). On top of that, a constantly updated site from user a0mineda1k1 shows each year’s biggest winners and relevant stats (although the numbers here also vary). That said, it doesn’t really matter how many awards a game got. It’s just interesting to see how widely well-received a game is, especially in comparison to other titles that year and previous overall rankings. I love Elden Ring as much as the next guy, so I’m just glad to see it get such high and overall praise, and see that in numbers form too. You can find this year’s total GOTY nominations yourself in this ResetEra thread. Maybe you want something a little different in FromSoftware’s latest RPG game instead? If so this Elden Ring mod turns it into a walking simulator, so you can marvel at The Lands Between in peace. Perhaps all this talk of Elden Ring has you wanting to jump back into the game? If so we’ve put together some guides to help you off on the right foot, as we’ve looked at both the best Elden Ring builds and the best Elden Ring classes to get you started. Read the full article

Please, please, please, please just let kids be kids and stop portraying them as little glamour girls. Children are children. Portray them as such!!
(Obviously I have no problem with fancy outfits or anything, but I feel like the recent GOTYs have been more about aesthetic looks rather than a realistic representation of current American children. In my opinion, GOTY 2015 was probably the last decent, realistic childhood wardrobe we got from AG).
I literally just bought some mid 2000s AG clothes for my collection for this exact reason, because I dress my dolls as realistic kids and not picture perfect glamour girls, and the modern AG clothes are just not suitable for accurate representations of children.
Another big issue is the fact that modern kids clothes (especially ones made for girls) in most department stores tend to look way too "mature" for the age of the child who wears them, but that's another topic.....
