Bocchi the Rock! Review

What was your favorite anime of the Fall 2022 season? If I had to bet, it was the highly anticipated Chainsaw Man. It was the most hyped anime of the year after all. It even had me, someone who usually doesn't watch or read shounen, keeping up with it. And as expected, it was a pretty good adaptation. Was it my favorite anime of the season though? I would have probably said yes if Bocchi the Rock! wasn't airing that season too. I'll stop with the comparisons here, since most people reading this already have read and/or watched CSM, and the two are apples and oranges, if the apple phased out of existence if you said its name too loud and the orange made you shit your pants after two bites. Anyways--who is Bocchi? And why does she rock?

Bocchi the Rock! is about Hitori Gotou, more commonly referred to as 'Bocchi', a high school girl who started learning to play guitar in order to be in a band and become popular. The problem is that, while she has become an excellent guitarist in the four years she has been playing, she has made zero friends during that time. She also hasn't joined a band yet due to her severe social anxiety. Turns out that being good at guitar, while making you look cooler, doesn't automatically net you new friends. In lieu of that, she runs a well-known YouTube channel under the pseudonym 'guitarhero', which she uses to upload her guitar solos. Luckily for our dear Bocchi, her dream of being in a band suddenly becomes true one afternoon, when she meets drummer Ijichi Nijika, who coincidentally is looking for a guitarist for her band.

Rounding out the band (named Kessoku Band) is bassist Ryou Yamada, whose cool and aloof demeanor is counteracted by her always being broke and being a walking rock music encyclopedia, and Ikuyo Kita, vocalist and backing guitarist, who joins the band because of her admiration (and longing) for Ryou. She doesn't actually know how to play the guitar when she joins Kessoku Band, but her willingness to learn combined with her ability to handle the social media side of things makes her a valuable asset to the group.

The four congregate at STARRY, a live house managed by Nijika's older sister, Seika. STARRY operates as a home base for Kessoku Band, with all four members working, practicing, and even sometimes performing there. Other characters of note include PA-san, a mysterious girl who also works at STARRY, and Kikuri Hiroi, an alcoholic bassist who quickly became a fan favorite despite her only appearing in a few episodes.

What made Bocchi the Rock! such a well-received show? The main reason would be the way Bocchi's social anxiety is shown as ridiculous and surreal, while at the same time being relatable and hilarious. I believe the phrase goes like 'She's just like me!'. There are more anime than I can count that have a socially awkward main character, but Bocchi the Rock! is one of the best anime at portraying the main character's introvertedness. Who among us has not at one point mentally melted into a puddle of water over being asked to do a simple task? Watching Bocchi's growth is one of the best parts about the anime.

Bocchi the Rock! has drawn many comparisons to K-On!, with some even considering it K-On!'s spiritual successor. While both anime do have many of the same plot points (slices of life about high-school-aged girls forming a rock band), Bocchi the Rock! is in no way a clone of K-On!. Bocchi the Rock! is nowhere near as 'moe' as K-On!, and contains a lot more conflict, although said conflict generally being low stakes. Kessoku Band has aspirations of becoming big, while it was only a passing thought for Ho-kago Tea Time. That being said, if you enjoyed K-On!, then Bocchi the Rock! is right up your alley (and vice versa!).

The sincerity of Bocchi the Rock! endears it even further, never using cheap fanservice as a cop-out. It isn't afraid to have subversive characters, which is great considering musicians tend to be, well, subversive. The nature of the anime leaves little to be desired. If there's one thing I'd fix, I'd have Nijika call Ryou a broke ass more often. I'd also have Bocchi listen to The Smiths and then have her turn into evaporated water once she finds out how stupid Morrissey can be.

In my opinion, Bocchi the Rock! is as good as the hype says. Is it top ten anime of all time good, as Anilist suggests? I wouldn't go that far. However, Bocchi the Rock! is one of the best SoL anime that I have seen in a long time. It's a good, wholesome story about a girl overcoming social anxiety to show off her guitar skills to the masses and gain fans and, more importantly, friends. While I would love to have a chance to scare the shit out of Bocchi, I'm cheering her on, mostly because I know she's more than likely to be a NEET if the whole 'become a famous guitarist' plan doesn't work.

It’s the Pop Up Video Strain XD (I just dated myself didn’t I, kids ask your parents.) Imagine poor S4 getting hit by this, everyone keeps rushing to keep the others from seeing embarrassing facts pop up randomly over their heads. Like of course Fushimi gets hit and his initial concern would probably be more about the Random Facts revealing his shitty past and everyone pitying him but instead the facts are things like ‘sleeps with a stuffed bunny to manage stress,’ ‘doesn’t wear underwear,’ and ‘is thankful to Munakata for giving him a place in Scepter 4, even though he’ll never admit it.’ Munakata is particularly touched by that last one, totally calm himself as facts pop up over his own head. I imagine Munakata’s Random Facts being really weird but somehow no one is surprised, like ‘practices trying to walk through walls daily like a ninja’ and ‘made four different teachers cry his first year of high school’ just seems like par for the course with Captain. Hidaka secretly hopes Awashima’s Random Facts will tell him her cup size but instead for some reason all of hers have to do with anko recipes. 

Hidaka himself keeps getting the side eye because his Facts mention things like an enjoyment of pens and his secret stash of magazines under his bed, he claims he has nothing to be ashamed of and then Akiyama asks him if he really is terrified of chickens and Hidaka’s like okay that one’s a little embarrassing. Gotou’s are all about his favorite cursed statues, while Enomoto really hopes no one noticed the Random Fact about the time he cosplayed as a magical girl or how he does yearly pilgrimages to the shrine his favorite moe anime took place at. Akiyama just glares at anyone who tries to bring up the Random Fact about the things he keeps in his closet, while Benzai turns a terrifying smile at those who want to know more about that ‘absolutely wuvs petting cute widdle kitty cats’ Fact. Doumyouji is pretty proud of his Facts though, like they mention a bunch of his skills and how he sometimes shows great flashes of insight, like look guys I’m actually smart so there (as he draws on his latest report). Fuse’s Facts are all about how much he dislikes Fushimi and then turn to how annoyed he is that all his Facts are about how much he hates Fushimi. Meanwhile everyone learns about Kamo’s life of woe, his restaurant and his daughter and failed marriage and they all feel kinda bad for him now.

Masayoshi frowned. “You didn’t believe me the first twelve times I said I wanted to stay in until the moon rose?”

Okay, twelve times. Gotou sighed, arm draped over Masayoshi’s shoulder. “I don’t NOT believe you,” he said.

“You don’t believe me.”

“Okay, first of all,” Gotou held up a finger. “There was that time when you said you didn’t want anything for your birthday, which was CLEARLY a trap because that limited edition preorder of classic Red Axe was getting ready to drop—”

“I had in that preorder early, Master got me on the list! You didn’t have to get me one too!”

“You gave me a blow job in the foyer when I brought it home. Thank god Keiko and Masanori were still at school.”

“I wouldn’t have done THAT if they were here.”

“STILL.”

Masayoshi, still peering up at him, said, “you wanted to do something, didn’t you?”

Gotou, surprised, looked away for a moment. “Maybe a little,” he admitted. “But it is the first night of the full moon, so it wasn’t like we could go out to dinner anyway.”

Masayoshi stretched his legs out, spreading his toes. “We’re going to Okinawa,” he said, matter-of-fact, and Gotou blinked. “Ishihara-san has everything booked, it is NOT any kind of press tour. Just us.”

“What?”

Masayoshi wiggled a little, clearly pleased with himself. “Mari said the kids could stay with her and Moe, and I’ve been wanting to tell you ALL WEEK but I’ve been good.”

“Masayoshi,” Gotou started, but Masayoshi tugged on his shirt and pulled him down into a soft kiss.

“Happy anniversary, Hidenori,” Masayoshi said, and Gotou smiled, brushed his hair back, and kissed him again.

I think we saw atleast one cultural festival in the manga but I feel it was a deeplywasted opportunity that there was no maid cafe because the worldneeds Scepter 4 maid cafe. So say the Blue Club has to come up withsomething for the next festival, Principal Ichigen has stated thatwhichever club has the most popular booth will get a larger budgetfor the rest of the year. Naturally Munakata has many ideas as to howthe Blue Club will prevail over the others but after muchdeliberation there is truly only one choice: the Blue Club will behosting a maid cafe, wherein all the members will dress in maidoutfits and serve coffee and pastries to guests. Enomoto is placed incharge of maid cafe research as it is a passion of his, Kamo will behandling the food, and Fushimi will be trying to fake his own deathto get out of it (Munakata isn’t fooled, however, he’s well awarethat Fushimi is the Blue Club’s secret ace in the hole and there’s noway he intends to have a cafe that does not involve Fushimi-kun in amaid outfit).

So come the day ofthe festival the entire student council is decked out in their maiduniforms and greeting customers. Akiyama is probably very popularbecause he’s sweet and kind and also slightly embarrassed about theentire thing, whenever anyone compliments him he blushes a little andhe’s basically getting moe points all over the place. He’s partneredwith Benzai, who also looks splendid in a maid costume with hislovely hair, Benzai is fully taking advantage of Akiyama’s popularityin order to get them more tips and thus more money for the Blue Club(I’m just imagining Benzai as being in charge of the money and hekeeps doing things like telling Akiyama to pose in certain ways,Akiyama will like pull his skirt down a little or hold his tray upshyly over his face and ask if it’s all right while the patrons gowild because he’s adorable). Doumyouji is the only one wearing shortsunder his skirt and he’s the energetic maid, he’s best at runningorders from place to place, working closely with stoic elegant maidand chef Kamo. Enomoto is also very skilled at being a maid, he hasgotten all their outfits perfectly tailored for maximum popularityand is highly trained in how exactly a proper Akihabara-style maidshould act. Fuse is a bit embarrassed but trying to keep up whileGotou is the chillest maid known to man. Hidaka keeps looking atDoumyouji and wondering if he should have worn shorts under his skirttoo, everyone keeps commenting that he’s awfully tall for a maid.

Meanwhile theperson in charge of greeting everyone at the door is none other thanstar attraction Fushimi, who of course looks adorable in his maidcostume even though he’s hiding a million knives under the skirt. Hekeeps trying to slip away and being dragged back by Munakata, thesparkliest of all maids and wearing the most elaborate costume.Munakata is very committed to doing maid cosplay the Proper Way andwould like Fushimi-kun to cooperate with him as much as possible. Ofcourse the Red Club has to show up at some point, Yata couldn’tresist stopping by when he heard Fushimi was standing in front of theBlue’s clubroom while in a maid costume. Yata starts teasing Fushimiabout what a lovely maid he makes but he keeps noticing how shortFushimi’s skirt is and is that a hint of garterbelt and there may bea slight flush forming on Yata’s cheeks. Fushimi notices and is alloh, I see the virgin can’t handle this kind of cafe. Yata insiststhat he’s not blushing at the sight of stupid Saruhiko in a skirt,Fushimi’s like really as he starts to pull up his skirt a bit. Yataimmediately freaks out, telling him to pull it down, Fushimi clickshis tongue and pulls out a knife like what did you think I was goingfor, virgin. Munakata then steps in to stop the fight and suggeststhat Fushimi-kun take over serving Yata-kun at the cafe, Fushimiflatly refuses while Yata stutters out his own disagreement, goingred again at the thought of Fushimi the demure grumpy maid (and thensome random student is like ‘Fushimi-san can serve me’ and Yata’simmediately on the defensive, like okay no one even gets to lookat Saruhiko like this except me got it).
