I wrote this for a character exercise for my Advanced Fiction Workshop cause it asked to put a character into a stressful family holiday/celebration and reveal the characters stress/fears through the other characters and interiority, so I wrote this little thing. It’s obviously AUish and all, also it’s slimmed down because I have a 500-word limit and I’ve already trimmed it and it’s still not short enough but I’m gonna say F it :P

Jeremiah always dreaded returning home for the holidays, and no amount of self-comfort that at least the days were the shortest of the year helped make having to spend a month with his mother, brother, with frequent visits from his Uncle any easier.

The night of his return, his mother seemed thought a celebratory family dinner was in order. Jeremiah wasn’t someone who was spoiled or ungrateful, but a family dinner was hardly his idea of a gift.

His brother stood up with a grin, his mother by some lapse of judgment putting him in charge of cutting the ham. Jeremiah watched warily as Jerome sharpened the knives against each other, light glistening against the silver blade, stomach churning as his brothers matching green eyes stared hard, and schemingly into his own.

Jerome, despite being his identical twin always managed to contort his face in such a way that he looked quite different to Jeremiah, wearing an expression, that Jeremiah had never worn himself.

“Jeremiah, it’s so wonderful to have you home, we’ve missed you so much, mother especially,” Jerome said, voice deeper and more grating than his own, a lilt that Jerome had adopted either to appear more menacing or further separate himself from his brother, but his words told Jeremiah that he’d pay for every praise their mother had spoken in his absence.

Jeremiah hardly saw a difference in their mother's treatment towards him, she was characteristically self-absorbed, preferring the drink over motherly acts, and having any sort of edge in her affections was hardly a win.

“I’m certain though,” Jerome continued finally pressing the blade into the ham, slicing with great precision as he made deliberate eye contact with Jeremiah across the table, “we’ll be quite reacquainted over this next month.”

Jeremiah swallowed, the long raised line of white skin across his throat stinging despite being a decade old scar.

Jeremiah was a man of science and knew very well it was a psychosomatic pain, but it didn’t stop him from raising a hand to rub over the irregular stripe of skin, the act bringing an even wider smirk and devilish glint to Jerome’s eyes.

He wore ties now.

Jeremiah’s eyes darted towards his mother, a paltry attempt to call her attention to Jerome. However, her fourth glass of wine was raised to her lips, hooded eyes staring down into the plum colored liquid.

Further down the table, his Uncle cleared his throat with a gruff cough, before turning towards Jeremiah.

“Good ole Miah, it’s great to have ya home. Did ya like the soup? I know how much ya hate Clam Chowder, so I made sure to make tomato soup for ya,” he said a smile breaking his plump bearded face.

Jeremiah sheepishly nodded earning a deep guffaw from his uncle who clapped his hand against the table, rattling the dishware.

Jeremiah ran his right thumb across the marred skin of his left hand, the scarring irregular and rough over his entire hand. The skin thin and delicate often blistering from the slightest bit of overuse, but it was nothing compared to the red, raw flesh that had once emerged from his uncle's soup pot, skin blistering and puffing in reaction to the shellfish, making it difficult to tell if the redness of his once ivory flesh was due to the allergic reaction or its recent boiling.

He wrote with his right hand now.
