itâs nothing funny just to talk (p.2)
What happens when you text that random number graffitied on a bathroom stall in your favorite bar? Jo Wilson is about to find out. - In which Bar Princess and Doctor Evil Spawn meet via text.
Saturday 12:09 PM
you know what might be worse than pyramid schemes?
bridal showers
this is horrendousÂ
Same woman you were drinking in solidarity to?
obviously, I have like four friendsÂ
I thought teachers were like outgoing and bubbly?
oh hell no, socializing is not my cup of tea
one of the other bridesmaids just asked who i was texting so I told her jack the ripper
Oh you couldnât even give me a good one
iâm gonna pretend you didnât say thatÂ
My day off and the weekend finally coincide, which means Iâm not leaving my couch all day.Â
I wish I were you this shower is gonna kill meÂ
teachers on the weekend are a fun sight to see
Youâre not partaking this time?
no iâm DD
itâs for the best, I did throw up on my shoes last weekendÂ
How crazy is a bridal shower that you need a DD?
thereâs a mimosa bar and theyâre already playing never have I ever
the mother of the groom is starting something with the mother of the bride
I gotta deal with thisÂ
 Saturday 3:11 PM
I deserve bottle of wine for all of the shit I dealt with today
I never wanna be a maid of honor ever again
Maybe we should rename you Maid of Dishonor?
wooooooow
I throw up on my shoes ONE TIME
Howâd the battle of the mothers go?
oh it was horrendousÂ
groom is from a rich family and bride grew up on a farm⊠you know how it goesÂ
Doesnât sound fun. Glad you made it out.Â
barely
howâs your day off going
Amazing. I get to watch baseball and sit on the couch with a bag of chips and a beer. Iâm living the dream.Â
I envy you
theyâre making us go out again
Do you get to drink during this escapade?
yes thank god
manhattan or moscow mule?
A whiskey drinker? You might be the perfect woman.Â
donât try to butter me up, iâve never even met you in person
We can change that.Â
 Saturday 6:14 PM
Do you think birds have dreams?
I thought I was supposed to get drunk
You were talking too long. And Iâm not drunk.Â
I canât think of another reason why youâd ask me about bird dreams
Youâre a teacher. I was curios.Â
iâm not a bird specialist
personally I do not think that birds can dream
Iâm telling them you said that.Â
the birds?
Yes. They deserve to know the truth.Â
have you just been sitting on the couch drinking beer all day?
did you even eat
Yeah I had pizza for lunchÂ
what about dinner?
Itâs not dinner time yet.Â
dude itâs 6
Oh shit really?
Hahaha that explains itÂ
psh and you said I was bad when I was drunk
youâre freaking Snow WhiteÂ
Is this ebcause I asked about the birdsÂ
yes it is
I gotta go, Maggie says iâm not netting the quota for fun
Maggie sounds like a buzzkill
sheâs the assistant principal, iâm scared sheâll fire me if I donât listen
jk⊠kindaÂ
 Saturday 12:32 AM
Incoming Voice Call
âJo! Put the phone down! You should not be calling anyone right now!â
âHello?â
âDoctor Evil Spawn! Iâm so glad you picked up.â
âAre you drunk now?â
âNooooâŠ.. maybe. I just wanted to say hi.â
âHi princess.â
âYour voice is nice. Itâs a good voice, itâs sexy and I like it.â
âYouâre kinda crazy, you know that?â
âJosephine Wilson! Give me the phone!â
âWoah who full named you? They sound angry.â
âThatâs Maggie, sheâs trying to get me to go home. I canât go home Maggie, Iâm talking to a hot doctor! And he has a sexy voice!â
âYouâve never even seen me, you donât know if Iâm hot.â
âIâm judging off your sexy voice and what few characteristics I know about you. Iâd be shocked if you werenât hot.â
âYou have too much faith in me.â
âI have to go, Maggie is dragging me out of the bar. Byeeee hot doctor!â
âGoodnight princess, donât throw up on your shoes this time.âÂ
 Sunday 9:58 AM
Howâre your shoes looking?
 Sunday 11:22 AM
Youâre still dead? I mean you did call me half past midnight⊠but I thought youâd be up by now.
 Sunday 1:46 PM
Are you embarrassed because of what you said on the phone? Frankly I found it endearing.Â
 Sunday 3:18 PM
As a doctor, Iâm advising you to drink more fluids and get food in your system. Maybe a banana. Itâll make you feel less shitty, trust me.
 Sunday 6:17 PM
Hope youâre not dead in a ditch somewhere.Â
 Monday 7:23 AM
oh my god I am so sorry
I dropped my phone in Maggieâs car and I just got it back
wait you were worried about me werenât you
Well you fell off the face of the earth⊠so yeah.Â
awwww well itâs nice to know that someone would notice if I was kidnapped and murderedÂ
Didnât you say I was the one that would kidnap and murder you?Â
yes but iâm having a change of heart
Is it because of my sexy voice?
I was kinda hoping I didnât say that out loud
whoops
I told you I found it endearing.Â
flattery will get you everywhere
gotta go, class is lining up and theyâre already screaming
Iâll pray for you.Â
 Monday 8:08 PM
dude the thai place on 7th across from old navy?
amazing
iâm in heaven
Oh so weâve reached the stage of giving each other food recommendations?
obviouslyÂ
this is a serious relationshipÂ
Chinese place across from Joeâs Bar has the best egg rolls. Perfect drunchies.Â
iâve never been to joeâsÂ
I live right around the corner from there
So weâre neighbors then? Iâm off of Fullerton.Â
I guess we are
thatâs exciting, i bet iâve seen you at the grocery storeÂ
Bold of you to assume I make it to the grocery store.Â
honestly same
I usually guilt steph or izzie into it
Youâre the chaotic good of the group arenât you?
obviouslyÂ
I keep things balancedÂ
whatâre you doing?
On a break, almost done for the night. I have to round on post ops and then Iâm done.Â
nice!!! did you get anything fun today?
Not really just surgeries I could do in my sleep.Â
typical mondayâs
I have to go, we have a field trip tomorrow and iâm not emotionally prepared
Oof. Have fun, donât die.Â
who the hell ends texts like that?
A doctor. Obviously. Night princess.Â
goodnight Snow White
 Tuesday 12:18 PM
whoever decided to bring 42 fourth graders to the science discovery museum should be firedÂ
Isnât that you?
maybe
maybe not
It was totally you. How about a deal?
deal with an internet stranger?Â
fine but if I die iâm gonna be pissed
How about I drop off a bottle of wine on your porch on my way to work? I work the night shift again.Â
hmmmm I donât think iâm supposed to give my address to strangers
but iâm pretty sure if you were going to kill me you wouldâve done it by now
See youâre getting the hang of it.Â
okay iâll give you my address
but if thereâs a bomb weâre going to have words
If thereâs a bomb youâll be dead.Â
 Tuesday 4:54 PM
red wine AND egg rolls?
if I didnât know better iâd think youâre trying to woo me
I think I need to meet you before we can say that.Â
thank you!!!Â
my roomies are teasing me about taking wine from a stranger
Youâre welcome. And Iâm not a stranger. I know your name and where you live.Â
aaaaand way to make things creepy
BTW your blonde roommate was checking out my ass.Â
hahahahaha thatâs izzie for you
she has a boyfriend donât worryÂ
I wasnât too concerned about her, just thought you might want to beat her up or something.Â
intentionally trying to start a cat fight? classy
she says youâre âsuper dreamyâ so thatâs a plus
Glad to know I passed the checkpoint. Does this mean I get to meet you now?
maybe maybe not
we have learned one good thing though
And whatâs that?
even if you are a serial killer, you have a good taste in wine and your attractive
iâll die happy
 Tuesday 7:32 AM
If I never work another overnight again itâll be too soon.Â
yeah youâve been working a lot of thoseÂ
wtf is up with that
I lost a bet with Arizona.Â
oof that doesnât sound fun
at least I have nice stable working hours
summers off
iâm living the dream
Why do you do that?
do what?
Send forty texts. Thereâs a button to put in a period and start a new sentence. In the same text.Â
you really do text like a 60 year old
Iâm sophisticated, obviously.Â
I know weâve never met but I need a favor
Oof. After I dropped off wine for you?
the favor includes free food and alcohol
Iâm listeningâŠÂ
that wedding iâm in is next weekend
and I donât have a date :-)
I wish I could, Iâm going out of town.Â
booooo
itâs okay, after iâm done being a brides bitch my weekend will open up
iâll also be done with school for year
So I can take you out on a proper date? Instead of texting you all day?Â
you do realize that youâre texting a girl who found your number at 11 pm while shit faced in a bar right
Thatâs always how I pictured meeting the woman of my dreams.Â
oh shut up
I suppose iâll go on a date with you, man I know nothing aboutÂ
Iâm Alex, Iâm 27 and I donât think pineapple belongs on pizza
deal breaker sorry
pineapple + pizza = deliciousnessÂ
Well at least you know more about me.Â
that I do
jo, 25, whoâs favorite color is purple and eats cinnamon toast for breakfast everyday, has to go educate the tiny humans
talk to you later old man
Oh come on youâre two years younger!
 Tuesday 1:26 PM
have you ever had to hot glue rhinestones to candle votivesÂ
because I am
and I hate it
WTF is a votive?
those tiny little glass things you put a candle into
Oh. Why are you bedazzling them?Â
wedding prep
today is a half day so bridezilla has us crafting for herÂ
Are all of you brides bitches teachers?
yes
itâs hell
you try to talk about your class and all you hear about is peonies and roses and babyâs breath
Iâm glad Iâm a dude then.Â
ha! you better beÂ
oh my god, sheâs gone psycho
if I donât text she took my phone
Donât die, Iâm looking forward to our date.Â
 Tuesday 7:17 PM
RIP Jo, Avid Cinnamon Toast EaterÂ
Killed by Her Insane Bride Friend Â
I made it out!!!!
barely
Nice, Iâve heard a rabid bridezilla is hard to escape.Â
it was the worstÂ
but she let me go when I told her I had to finish putting in grades for the year
(I finished last night)
I for one am proud of you. Thatâs badass.Â
lol iâll keep that in mindÂ
thursday is our last day before freedom
I think I might get shit faced as soon as I leave work
I support it wholeheartedly.Â
good because youâll probably get more bar princess texts
Or if Iâm lucky a phone call where you call me sexy again.Â
hey hey I didnât call you sexy
I called your voice sexy
thereâs a differenceÂ
Oh sorry, I donât know how I overlooked that.Â
mhm sureÂ
tomorrow is crazy hair dayÂ
Does this mean I get to see a picture of you? Because Iâm definitely interested in seeing what you do with this spirit day thing.Â
iâll save it for when we meet
Iâm determined not to see you until our date
Suit yourself. Gotta go remove stitches.Â
oooohh how exhilarating!!Â
 Wednesday 9:42 AM
How goes the crazy hair?
oh just dandyÂ
half my hair is pinkÂ
You seem like the type to be able to pull of pink hair. Plus itâs pretty rad.Â
youâre too kindÂ
I bribed the kids with cookies and a movieÂ
iâm totally winning today
I just took out an appendix, I think I win.Â
just saying I donât think that our jobs are comparableÂ
but taking out an appendix sounds cool
Not as cool as cookies though.Â
I have a bunch left over
should I drop them on your doorstep?Â
Only if you want to. I wouldnât say no to a good cookie. Iâm here till 5.Â
iâll stop by after work!!Â
we have another half day
Sweet. Iâm glad youâre the one that found my number.Â
 Wednesday 12:56 PM
Dude. George says you look like an adorable preschooler.Â
I FORGOT I HAD MY HAIR LIKE THIS
he was very understandingÂ
Rave reviews on your âkindness and beautiful eyesâÂ
oh my godÂ
I have to die nowÂ
He mightâve mentioned your ass too. Iâm painting a beautiful mental picture.Â
oh lord
brb gotta wash out this stupid hair dyeÂ
maybe bang my head against the shower wall
Oooh tell me more. I love a dirty shower fantasy.Â
oh booo
youâre not even trying anymoreÂ
 Wednesday 5:55 PM
remember the titans is on tv
and itâs really goodÂ
in case you didnât knowÂ
That movie is 20 years old, of course I know itâs good.Â
well clearly I didnâtÂ
i didnât have cable growing upÂ
Oh neither did I, I just stole it from the neighbors.Â
thatâs pretty bad ass for a kidÂ
Had to keep my siblings entertained. You know how it is.Â
nope iâm an only child
That sounds like a dream. I have two younger siblings and theyâre both a pain in the ass.Â
if you knew the half of it youâd be begging to trade places with meÂ
Iâm looking forward to hearing all of it.Â
 Thursday 11:53 AM
FREEDOM!!!!!!
I AM FREE!!!!
HALLELUJAH!!!!!
Iâm assuming school is out?
Y E S
$20 says I can sneak out of here without bridezilla roping me into a stupid arts and crafts projectÂ
I hope so, Iâm enjoying talking to you today.Â
arenât you at work??
Nope. Today is my day off.Â
and youâre not watching baseball and drinking beer?
Itâs not even noon yet.Â
time is an illusion
itâs shots o clock somewhere or whatever they say
Iâm now learning that the only cultural education you have is the Backstreet Boys. I think our second date will have to be a movie marathon.Â
already planning our second date?
ambitiousÂ
I like it
My conversation is fairly limited if I canât drop a pop culture reference or two during the day.Â
I can see your points and iâm willing to sit myself down and watch the classics
okay gotta sneak past bridezilla⊠wish me luck
Good luckÂ
 Thursday 4:35 PM
Pork shoulder, corn, and potatoes all on the grill.Â
iâm jealous
I canât cook to save my lifeÂ
thank god weâre going out tonight
To celebrate finally breaking free for the summer?
exactly!! steph and izzie decided we needed to go to a club after dinner
iâve never been to one beforeÂ
Overpriced drinks and random guys grinding up on you all night. Not the best experience.Â
oh so random guys grind on you when you go out?
Shut up.Â
hahahahaÂ
Iâve never even been to a club before. Not my scene. I just live with women so I know these things.Â
well iâll update you on the happenings
let you know if I have to pay $20 for a drink
whoâs grinding on my ass
you know normal everyday things
Woah woah woah.Â
what??
are you jealous??
Iâm just saying if youâre gonna be shaking your ass, you might as well get random guys to buy you overpriced drinks.Â
youâre making some very good pointsÂ
Of course I am. By the way, George wants me to tell you that you have a very shakeable ass so you should be taking in free drinks.Â
great I have to go die againÂ
brb gonna drOWN MYSELF IN THE SHOWERÂ
 Thursday 10:38 PM
good news
iâve secured three free drinks and a round of shots for all six of us
this ass is making money baby
Iâve created a monster. Who else is there?
steph, izzie, april, maggie, and levi
You brought the whole staff out didnât you?
yes and Iâm quite skilled at getting them drunk
Youâre three drinks in and still texting correctly?
I think I danced it all off

And thatâs another thing. Who willingly shoots Fireball?
me bitch
Ohh I love it when you call me names.Â
mmm iâm sure you do
okay iâm gonna go get more drinks
wish me luck
Good luck, Iâm sure your ass will take in more than enough.Â
 Thursday 11:57 PM
Incoming Voice Call
âHelloo?â
âHi, itâs me.â
âI can afford caller ID, I knew it was you.â
âWere you sleeping?â
âNo, I was about to head upstairs but Iâm not tired.â
âOh good. I just got home.â
âYou sound tired. Did you have fun?â
âIt was nice, Steph went home with some guy she met and Izzie went to her boyfriends so Iâm home alone.â
âSo you decided to call me?â
âI missed your voice, I told you that you have a nice voice.â
âYou said that I have a sexy voice.â
âOh shut up. I wanted to call before I went to sleep.â
âYouâve grown fond of me haven't you?â
âIf youâre gonna say it like a weirdo then yes⊠I have grown fond of you, Snow White.â
âI guess I can say the same about you Bar Princess. Are you yawning over there?â
âJust a little bit, but I like talking to you.â
âItâs midnight, I wouldnât blame you for falling asleep.â
âI donât wanna fall asleep, I wanna keep talking to you.â
âHow about I tell you the story of the time I was bridesman and I had to go to a bachelorette party?â
âOkay Iâm listeningâŠâ
 Friday 10:15 AM
I feel like a teenagerÂ
who the hell falls asleep on the phone
iâm in a bad rom com aren't IÂ
Your snoring is really cute.Â
oh christ
well at least I didnât take body shots off a male stripper
I was really hoping youâd be asleep before I got to that part.Â
oh nooo I remember that very clearlyÂ
iâll be filing that away for blackmail
Rude. I guess Iâll save your snoring in that file too.Â
touché, I like the way you play the game
Iâm an experienced player. Gotta go scrub in on a fundoplication.Â
have fun!!!
 Friday 2:41 PM
I got bored and googled a fundoplication
thatâs some crazy stuff, youâre kind of a badass
Easy peasy, all in a day's work.Â
nooo thatâs amazing stuff!!Â
iâm in my classroom scraping gum and glitter off of the desks
Well youâre the reason people become doctors so I'd say youâre pretty important too.Â
awww youâre still trying to impress me
itâs a good look on you
Iâm trying to be a gentleman. Maybe Iâll bring up your puke shoes just to be an asshole.Â
you know what even the mention of that canât bring down my good mood
do you think I could get in trouble for drinking wine in my classroom?
Well thereâs no kids around so⊠no. But I like the rebellious attitude you have towards the situation.Â
if iâm gonna sit in a classroom with no AC and scrape boogers off desks all day then I deserve some damn wine
Youâre right and you should say it.Â
I DESERVE MY WINE I EARNED IT
oh shit maggie is outside iâm so fired
Hey you got her free shots last night, she should be thankful.Â
you know what youâre right
oh shit itâs bridezilla
Run.
whew
forgot we have our final dress fitting tomorrow
iâm not dead yet
Oh good. I kinda donât want the first time I see you to be your funeral.Â
hahaha very funny
gotta go, we have to do this stupid year end meeting
I hate it here
Have fun, and remember donât stab yourself with a pen!
 Saturday 8:13 AM
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING
I wanna dieÂ
bridezilla is making us jog
and she took away my donuts
 Saturday 9:53 AM
Jesus Christ. You need new friends.Â
honestly sheâs not that bad when sheâs not stressing over this weddingÂ
sheâs crying because she has a pimple
Oof thatâs a tough run. Unfortunately, I have to spend the day out on a boat.Â
boohoo I donât not feel bad for you
unless like⊠you have some childhood trauma from a boat
Nope. I get to relax and drink beer all day long.Â
yeah well then screw you
I have to try my stupid dress on and go to a stupid lunch and I CANâT EVEN HAVE DONUTS
Arenât you at home?
yes, steph invited everyone here since we have the space
why?
Check your porch.Â
YOU BROUGHT ME DONUTS?!Â
youâre my favorite
thank you thank you thank youÂ
Youâre welcome, Iâm happy to be of service.Â
ohhhh I might just kiss you when we finally meetÂ
I wouldnât say no to that.Â
okay I gotta go hide in the closet and eat my donutsÂ
thank you for thinking of me!!
Itâs all I ever do.Â
 Saturday 2:16 PM
How goes the dress trying on?
it was good!! mine fits and we have a beautiful bride on our handsÂ
Good. Iâm glad your day is getting better. I think Iâm getting a sunburn.Â
you better not
that shit is dangerousÂ
go find sunscreenÂ
Now youâre concerned about me huh?
always
did you put the sunscreen on
Yes because I knew youâd spontaneously implode if I didnât.Â
goodÂ
I didnât want to you to burst into flames sitting in the sun
As a doctor, I can tell you that most likely would not be what happened.
now we have to sit through a boring ass lunch
itâs what the mother of the groom insists on
Is she paying for it though? âŠ. yes
Well then stop complaining.
okay okay fine
hey quick question
which fork do i stab myself with
Go order a steak and drink an expensive glass of wine.
 Saturday 10:39 PM
Incoming Voice Call
âWell well well, how the tables have turned.â âBar Priiiiiincessss.â âOh my god. This is so going in the blackmail file.â
âNo donât do that. If Jo finds out I was singing to another girl sheâll be mad.â âAnd why donât you want Jo to be mad at you?â âBecause I want to kiss her. And hug her. And see her face.â
âWell do I have a surprise for you.â âOh I love surprises!â
âJo and Bar Princess are the same person. Iâm Jo.â âHoly crap! NO way!â
âYes way, isnât that crazy?â
âCan you tell Jo that sheâs the nicest person Iâve ever met.â âI will relay the message. Jo is going to bed now though. Goodnight Alex.â âGood night Bar Princess, I miss you!â

That Cute Couple You See at a Coffee Shop
SURPRISE! (Or not?) Iâm your @tgpsecretsanta @alys07! I hope you enjoy this Cheleanor Cinderella Story/College AU I wrote for you! You can read it on AO3 or down in the cut below!Â
P.S. special thanks to @chidi-anagonye for editing! <3Â
Summary:Â What happens when Chidi and Eleanor begin messaging each other online, with no idea of who the other really is?Â
Words: 5555
I got my latte with almond milk this morning, pinged Chidiâs penpal. A special shoutout to you, bud.
A grin slipped onto Chidiâs lips. He was in the middle of class, his seminar about Middle Eastern civilization, but still he typed back,
Iâm jealous. But! at least youâre able to enjoy it without any of my agony and guilt.
Did you just make a joke? She wrote back. Look at you! Iâm impressed. Character development.
You taught me well.
âChidi!â Tahani hissed, catching Chidi in the middle of his lovestruck look at his computer. âChidi!â She cried again, tapping his desk with her manicured index finger.
âHuh? What?â
âLook, I know you are quite infatuated with this mystery girl, but can you please pay attention for one moment so we can meet with our group project partners?â
âRight! Sorry!â Chidi cleared his throat. As he whipped out his notes from his backpack, Tahani squinted at Chidiâs iMessage. Blushing furiously, Chidi clicked the âXâ at the corner of the window. The last thing Tahani needed to see were his ramblings from last night, after he told his mystery friend that he wished they were a couple he had seen at the coffeehouse, studying together, staring into each otherâs eyes. He then panicked because he realized how desperate he sounded. To cover for his semi-flirty messages, he typed out a long explanation, spanning paragraphs, but it didnât work. He was bad at lying, and the worst part was, he wasnât even drunk. He was just that awkward.
âUgh,â Tahani sighed, flopping down in the seat next to him dramatically. âChidi, you obviously like this girl. Itâs been three months. Are you ever going to tell her how you feel?â
âFirst of all,â Chidi shut his laptop. âYou should not be reading my messages! Also, no. It wouldnât be right to disclose my feelings if she doesnât have all of the information she can possibly can have about me. And! I donât know if she has a boyfriend, or girlfriend, or if sheâs romantically interested in any gender at all! It would be ethically unsound for me to dump that burden on her. And since finals are approaching, and it might distract her, too!â
âI mean thatâs technically true, but still-â
âAlright!â Â interrupted Eleanor, the de facto leader of their project team, barreling in from the doorway. âLetâs get to work!â
Perfect timing, Chidi thought, letting out a sigh of relief.
âDid you just get to class?â he inquired, eyeing the coffee cup still in hand and scarf around her neck. It didnât surprise him, Eleanor always came late, but still, it floored Chidi how she strolled in with unabashed confidence. Chidi shriveled away when he arrived even one minute late, how could Eleanor muster the guts to come forty five minutes after class began?
âLong line at Michaelâs,â Eleanor explained, setting her cup down and pulling her messy notes onto the desk. As Chidi learned from their midterm presentation, Eleanor wasnât the best student, but she was the best at organizing their projects of the four of them. Unlike Chidi, she didnât waver on which details to include and unlike Tahani, she wasnât concerned with how to woo the teacher for self-validation. And unlike Jason, she actually had⊠a brain, so she could contribute sometimes.
(To be honest, Chidi didnât know how Jason got into college at all. Not that he minded having him there, he always offered free snacks at their group meetings, but he wasnât... the sharpest tool in the shed)
âBy the way, I saw Jason nuzzling with Janet by the windows,â Eleanor mentioned. â So I guess theyâre not coming either.â
âWait, Jason and Janet together?â Tahani asked, flabbergasted. Tahani wasnât the only one surprised. Jason was a great guy but Janet wasnât exactly... his type. She was pretty, funny, president of the student body and the Scholars Club. On top of that, she knew everything. He wasnât exaggerating. She literally knew everything. Sometimes his friend Simone joked she was secretly a robot.  âSince when have they been⊠dating?â
âI wouldnât say theyâve been âdatingâ if you know what I mean,â Eleanor snorted. She flipped through her stack of loose leaf paper and pulled out her project notes, clicking into her planning mode, âAlright, so we have five more days to put together our final presentation, and from what I remember from what we talked about on Tuesday, no one has any weekend finals, so I vote we get together Saturday and Sunday and just bang this shiz out, ya feel me?â Proud of her quick thinking, Eleanor laid back in her seat and propped her feet up on Jasonâs vacant chair.
âOh!â Tahani clucked. âIâm sorry Eleanor! But no can do!â
âIâm sorry?â Eleanor sat back up.
âWhat Tahani is trying to say is, the Scholars Club has a ball on Saturday of winter finals week,â Chidi filled her in, âAnd since Tahani and I are on the board, weâre busy planning until Saturday, and then on Sunday, we have to clean up and debrief, so it probably wonât be until Monday that we can work on the presentation.â
âSeriously?â Eleanor threw her head back and groaned. Â âWhy didnât you mention this earlier?â
âWell, weâve been caught up with other finals, Scholars Club events, Iâm part of the Plato societyâŠâ
âOh my god, I get it, you ner-â Eleanor paused mid-sentence.
Chidi cocked his head at her. Was she about to say nerds? Huh. He felt like he had heard that phrase from somewhere, but he couldnât place whereâŠ
â-naturally very busy overachievers,â Eleanor covered. She froze for a second before flapping her lips exasperatedly, folding up her notes and shoving them back into her backpack. âI guess weâll just do it on Monday around my philosophy final, then.â
âIâm sorry, Eleanor,â Tahani patted her hand. âBut I promise Iâll come by your dorm tonight to give you that face cream. It will make all your blemishes disappear!â
âTahani, I never said-â
âOh, Iâm so excited to see your triple, Eleanor!â Tahani interrupted, clapping her hands together. âI bet itâs just so⊠quaint.â
She shot her one last grin before gathering all her books and striding away, her floral dress billowing behind her. Eleanorâs mouth dropped open at she watched Tahani exit, still wondering what just happened.
âDonât worry,â Chidi told her. âShe gave me face cream last week, too. You donât need it.â
Eleanorâs eyes sparkled before she coughed and stood up, slinging her backpack over her shoulder. For some reason, Chidi found himself liking the way her eyes glimmered under the fluorescent lights, how the ends of her mouth softened, how her cheeks tinted pink. She looked pretty.
Calm down, Chidi, he scolded himself as he shook his head. One crush at a time.
***
I ate a quesadilla for lunch today, Chidi texted mystery girl later that day, at the library with Uzo. And now I have a giant stomach ache.
Iâm sorry, philosophy cutie, she instantly replied. I wish you didnât feel so sick all the time :(
The campus health center is open until 7. She added. Maybe you can make an appointment? She sent him a link to the online appointment maker.
I have to study for my psych final tomorrow, Chidi messaged. But thank you for checking for me. That was really nice of you.
Guess youâre not the only one with character development. Â :)
Chidi chuckled to himself. He began crafting a witty response, clicking on the urban dictionary link he bookmarked to match her constant use of casual slang. He felt Uzo peering over his shoulder and turned around.
âShrimp freak again?â Uzo lifted an eyebrow.
Chidi nodded.
Uzo, his childhood best friend, his roommate, his pseudo-brother, was one of the only people who knew the full story. Of how Chidi wrote under a pen name for the universityâs online philosophy zine. Of how one day, âStoneColdSteveAustinfreakâ had commented on his post, mocking his rigidity and suggesting he âlighten up.â Chidi responded politely, requesting that she directly contact him for her difference in perspective, and two days later, he received a message from shrimpfreak1014 over his newspaper gmail chat. At the time, he was refining his midterm paper for deontology, checking every now and again for messages. Somehow, he remained embroiled in an argument with her until three A.M.
She irritated Chidi to to end. She was argumentative, and she made fun of his nerdy habits, and her sense of humor was cruder than he liked. But at the same time, Chidi didnât want to stop talking to her. She was sharp and witty and unlike anyone heâd ever met. She was selfish, but she was trying to be better. She was rude, but she apologized when she went too far. She coined herself as a moral particularist, yet she sometimes cited Kant in her arguments, emphasizing when she did just to tease him.
And soon, as their chats grew more and more frequent, they became closer. She messaged him during her work breaks, and he talked to her while he worked on his homework late at night, bags sagging under his eyes as he alternated between his essay about Plato to their discussion of Tim Scanlon. They were friends, advisors, maybe even confidantes, their conversations ranging from philosophy to their favorite coffeehouse on campus to their lives outside of university. She told him how she emancipated from her parents at fourteen, how she worked three jobs to pay off her student loans, how she decided to become a better person after a near-death experience getting her stomach pumped. He confided that his grandmother passed away last year and he missed her, he missed the snacks she used to send and the stews she used to serve. Since then, he told her, he had been more anxious than usual, the simplest of decisions causing his palms to sweat and his leg to bounce .
Listen, dude, how about this? She wrote. Since youâve been my dorky mentor and youâve helped me a better person and all the junk, why donât I help you make decisions? Iâm good at that stuff, anyway.
You would do that? He asked.
Yeah, man, I owe it to you! She insisted. The next time you freak out over a big decision just come to me.
And so he came to her each time he freaked out, faced with a choice between white or black, right or left, frozen mocha or coffee.
Just get the frozen mocha, she would reply, as if choosing was so easy. You donât even like the taste of fair trade coffee at the cafe, so why not get something you enjoy?
Youâre right, said Chidi, shocked at her ability to choose without qualms. And so they went on, Chidi as her philosophy mentor and shrimpfreak as his decision maker, and Chidi found himself aching for her messages. During the day, his mind began drifting to her: how perfectly she complemented Chidi, how since they started talking, he softened her and she strengthened him. He wonder about her in ways he shouldnât, about how her eyes were probably bright and fearless, about if her mouth would curl after a quip, about how her skin would feel against his, cuddling in Chidiâs bed-
No, no, no. It was wrong. How could he have a crush on her when-
âChidi?â Uzo waved a hand in front of his face, snapping him back to reality. âChidi? Dude, are you freaking out about your crush on shrimp freak again?â
âA little,â Chidi squeaked. âOkay, well a lot,â He admitted. âI canât handle this anymore, Uzo! I mean Iâve kept this from her for way too long, and Iâm the one whoâs always maintained a moral code of honesty! And if I do tell her how I feel, it could potentially destroy our relationship and all the progress sheâs made! And who am I to destroy progress, Uzo? I donât have that kind of authority!â
âListen, youâve got to calm down, man,â Uzo advised, while Chidi gasped for air. âLook, it seems like this is eating you alive insideâŠâ
âPretty much everything does!â
âRight, but it seems like you like her a lot, so⊠why donât you put yourself out there? â He punched Chidi lightly on the shoulder. âAsk her to the Scholars Club ball.â
âThe Scholars Club ball?â
âThe Scholars Club ball.â Uzo nodded. âJust so you have a shot at meeting in person. I mean, itâs been four months and you donât even know her real name. You can just go as friends, too. No pressure. But this way, you donât have to worry about her not knowing who you really are, and if you want, you can come clean and tell her about your feelings.â
âHuh. Thatâs not a bad idea, actually.â Chidi pondered, tilting his head. If they went to the Scholarâs Ball together, they could have a lot of fun. Shrimpfreak could meet Uzo and Tahani and Simone, and they could talk and laugh all through the night. And maybe, just maybe, (just a thought!) they could slow-dance together, too. He even knew how to sell it to her. There were tons of caterers and free cocktail shrimp. Heâs sure she would like that.
But there were drawbacks, too, and Chidi had to consider those, too. Maybe he could make a pros and cons list. Or maybe he would use that Magic 8 Ball in the student union to make a decision for him.
âIâll think about it,â he told Uzo.
âYouâre going to stay up all night agonizing about whether to ask her, arenât you?â Uzo anticipated.
âYeah, pretty much!â
âI know you too well, buddy,â Uzo laughed.
***
âEleanor!â Tahani sang outside her door. âI have your face cream!â
âOh, no,â Eleanor muttered. âHere we go.â
She closed her laptop and ripped down her Stone Cold Steve Austin poster. Eleanor wasnât sure if Chidi told her about their messages, but wasnât taking any chances. She scanned her room for any other defining items that might give her away. Luckily, she wasnât much of a decorator, unlike Becky, who littered her desk with pictures of cats, Spiderman figurines, and frog drawings by her cousin, Jeremy. Yeah, sure, the frog sketches were cute, but the Spiderman figurines? Come on, Becky!
âHello, Eleanor!â Tahani greeted as Eleanor opened the door, waltzing right into her room without permission.
âSure, come on in, Tahani. I definitely invited you.â Eleanor grumbled and flopped onto her bed.
âHereâs a bag with some face cream, and some other Korean skincare products Iâd thought you might like to try!â Tahani perched herself on the edge of Eleanorâs bed. As she examined the rest of Eleanorâs dorm room, her face scrunched. âWhy, this space is awfully⊠crampedâŠâ
âBecause itâs a dorm room,â Eleanor drawled sarcastically. âItâs small? Itâs something normal college students usually live in?â
âI mean itâs nothing compared to the spacious single I have in the Scholarâs Club house, and itâs not as quaint as I thought, but I have to admit, itâs quite cute. Aside from the Spiderman figurines on that desk, which are creeping me outâŠâ
âRight? Thank you!â Eleanor threw her hands up in the air emphatically. âI keep telling Becky to turn them to the side so we donât have to see them!â
âThough I suppose they would creep out the people walking and looking at the dorm windows,â Tahani giggled.
âHaha! Youâre right!â Eleanor snickered. âThereâs no winning, is there?â
âNot unless you accidentally throw them in the garbage can!â Tahani joked.
âThatâs the best idea youâve ever had, babe!â Eleanor rolled over from laughing so hard. Tahani, who was keeling over with her laughter along with her, suddenly stopped, focusing on the left corner of Eleanorâs room.
Eleanorâs eyes widened. Oh no. She had completely forgotten that she left her work backpack on her desk. It was free of badges and patches and tacky Becky-like decorations⊠besides the small shrimp keychain on the zipper.
Shit.
âSay Eleanor,â Tahani spun back towards Eleanor. âShrimp doesnât happen to be your favorite food, does it?â
âI donât know what youâre talking about, Tahani,â Eleanor challenged, shooting Tahani her sharpest eyes. Tahaniâs normally light demeanor darkened to match Eleanorâs venomous stare.
âAnyway,â Eleanor swung her legs around her bed and stood up. The faster she could shove Tahani out of the room, the better. âI think itâs time for you to go, Tahani,â She pushed Tahani back towards the door with her feeble muscles. Jeez, she was surprisingly strong. âBuh-bye! See you Monday!â
âHang on just a second,â Tahani resisted Eleanorâs shove.âYou donât happen to have a poster of Stone Cold Steve Austin, do you?â
âAgain,â Eleanor choked. âI donât know what youâre talking about, Tahani. See you later, okay buh-bye!â
âOh, really?â Tahani smugly leaned against the doorframe, pointing to the back of the room. âThen why is that Stone Cold Steve Austin poster on the ground?â
Eleanor flicked her eyes back to the back of the room. Her Stone Cold Steve Austin poster was lying face-up. Fuck. She tore the poster down but she forgot to turn it over or hide it under the bed. Damn it, Eleanor!
âOkay, fine, you caught me!â Eleanor caved. She sighed and walked back to her bed. âIâm shrimpfreak1014.â
âWell, since I am very well-connected,â bragged Tahani, shutting the door and joining her on the bed. âI happen to know the identity of the lucky man youâve been talking with-â
âPlease,â Eleanor rolled her eyes. â I know itâs Chidi. I sit behind him in class and heâs not super discrete about messaging on his laptop.â
âOh,â Tahani shook herself out of her initial shock before agreeing, âThat is true. But if you know who he is, and you both are very close, why donât you tell him who you are?â Â
Because itâs Chidi, she wanted to say. Heâs intelligent and patient and kind and he genuinely cares about people. He cares about me. But I donât even know if he cares about me me. Eleanor me.
And I couldnât stand losing him if he didnât.
âBecause I donât even know if he likes me,â she said instead. She avoided Tahaniâs gaze as her eyes welled with tears, tucking the strands of hair behind her ears. God, she probably looked like an idiot, getting all soft talking about how much she liked him. âWe always bicker while working on projects, and he always gives me a funny look whenever I say something ignorant, and I just⊠I donât want him to change his mind if he knows who I really amâŠâ
âEleanor,â comforted Tahani, rubbing her back in circles. âIâve known Chidi for a long time, and he doesnât dislike anyone. Including you. And alsoâŠâ Tahani hesitated  âYou never know how someone will react if you tell them how you feel, so it never hurts to try. Like the time I told Daniel Radcliffe thatâŠâ
âYeah, yeah, I get it,â Eleanor cut her off. âI always get it. ButâŠ. Thanks, Tahani. I guess. Maybe. Iâll think about it.â She smiled up at her in between sniffles.
âNo problem, friend,â Tahani gave her one last pat on the back before heading back to the door, this time, without Eleanor forcing her out. âWell, I better get going. I have to run a bunch of errands for the ball. But Eleanor,â Tahani lingered in the doorway, rocking back and forth on her feet. âIf you ever want to get lunch or somethingâŠIâd be happy to put something in my calendar.â
âThat would be great, Tahani,â accepted Eleanor, grinning. Sure, Tahani was a snob, and she name-dropped too much. She wore heels even though she didnât need them, and she was too concerned with her popularityâŠbut she also had a good heart. And she was kind of fun to be around. It was only fair that Eleanor gave her a chance.
âBut only if we go to get burgers,â she added. âIâm not much of a fancy girl, and you could use some loosening up.â
âWell, I look forward to the grease.â Tahani bobbed her head, then double-checked, âIs grease something to look forward to?â
âYouâll see, babe,â Eleanor winked at her. âYouâll see.â
***
Chidi paced up and down the shiny, hardwood floor of the Scholars Club house kitchen. He had been at it for an hour and a half. Femi already came down to check if he was okay, and he had already scarfed down three bananas from the ornate ceramic fruit bowl Tahani had made for the kitchen. Okay, he was going to go over the possible outcomes one last time, then he was going to decide on what to doâŠ
Hey, bud, his phone vibrated in his hand, disrupting his train of thought. Havenât heard from you in awhile. Feeling alright?
Chidi trembled as he reread the message. He couldnât keep up this charade any longer, otherwise he would just end up freezing her out. Yeah, thatâs what normally ended up happening with his friends and ex-girlfriends he couldnât break secrets to, but he didnât want this to happen with her. He didnât want to lose her; he wanted this, finally, to be the one that stuck.
You know what? His mind whipped into shape and settled, He was going to do it. If shrimpfreak had taught him anything, it was how to be more decisive. He yearned so badly to meet her, he yearned for nothing else, but he was letting the tossing and turning of his mind prevent him from going for what he desired.
Hey! He texted. Thanks for checking up on me. I was just thinking how to ask you something. So Iâm part of the Scholars Club on campus and weâre having a ball on Saturday night. Do you want to go with me? Just as friends, of course. Thereâll be free shrimp!
He held his breath while he waited for her response. Nothing.
He removed another banana from the fruit bowl. Maybe the overload of potassium could somehow carry him through the day.
***
It was only in his final class of the day, creating a study guide for philosophy of neuroscience alongside Simone, when he heard back from shrimpfreak1014:
Sorry man, I have work from 9-5 tomorrow and then I have to finish my group project. :( Â
Oh, Chidi responded, swallowing his disappointment. I understand. Good luck with finals! If you end up having time, feel free to come by. Â
Yeah, honestly, dude, Iâm not really sure if I will. I donât know if Iâm ready to meet yet.
Chidi blinked, pushing down the sickening feeling slithering up his throat.
Thatâs okay, He reassured, although he was stewing in his own regret. We can just meet when weâre ready. Thereâs no rush, right?
No response.
Chidi heaved as he ran his fingers through his hair.
âYou okay, Chidi?â Simone asked, tapping him on the shoulder.
âYeah,â He somehow managed to lie through his heaving. âYeah, yeah, Iâm fine.â
This was why he couldnât make decisions.
***
On the day of the ball, Chidi rose with dread.
He was surprised he could get up at all- his muscles fatigued from restless turning, his eyes strained from rereading old messages all night. Uzo calmed him down for a little bit in the morning, promising that shrimp freak just needed some time to process the idea of meeting him in person. Chidi told him he was probably right, but still, he checked his phone a couple more times to see if she had messaged back.
The rest of the day kept him distracted enough; he and the rest of the board met in the living room to begin ball preparations: wrapping carnations around the banisters, confirming arrival times of the caterers, transporting surprise gift bags to the gazebo. He felt normal, for the most part- until he overheard Simone and Vicky talking about their dates.
Chidiâs stomach boiled with agony. He didnât know why he cared so much- he had been fine with not having a date, with not meeting his secret friend in the near future. Now he couldnât get it out of his head, and he hated himself for it. Why did he have to go and ruin everything?
As the sun lowered over the Scholars Club house hill, the guests rolled into the living room. Chidi feigned a smile as he tore them in half, trying not to let his misery get the best of them. They had planned this ball for months and at least it was going well: the decorations colorful yet classy, the guests adorned in flowing gowns and fitted suits.
After he finished up registration, Chidi floated throughout the house to different groups, greeting them and asking if they were having a good time. It wasnât a distraction, he tried to convince himself. It was part of his job as a board member. He wasnât trying to keep his mind off shrimpfreak at all. He wasnât even thinking about her.
âChidi!â beckoned Simone from the kitchen.
Chidi let out a sad smile and moved towards Tahani, Uzo, and Simone. As he approached them, Tahani handed him a plate of shrimp. Chidi thanked her gratefully and popped it in his mouth, humming delightfully at its taste.
âMmmm.â He turned to Tahani. âYou did a great job with all of this. The shrimp is so much better than last year, and people seem to be having a great time.â
âItâs much better than the one Kamilah threw two years ago, isnât it?â
âOh, much better,â Chidi reassured, and he meant it. Kamilahâs taste was a little too loud and garish for him, but Tahani struck the tasteful balance between sophisticated and fun.
âBe honest,â Uzo slugged an arm around his shoulder. âHow are you holding up, man?â
âCould be better,â He shrugged. âBut, Iâm not doing horrible. I think⊠Iâm going to go outside for a little bit. Get some fresh air.â
âOh,â Uzo dropped his arm from his shoulders. âDo you need anything else?â
âIâm okay.â
âWould you like some more shrimp, Chidi?â Tahani extended out another plate.
âIâm good,â Chidi tried to think of an excuse so he didnât sound lame âIâll come back in later⊠maybe⊠to get some more.â
Skeptically, Simone crossed her arms. âYouâre going to go outside and read until you calm down for a bit, arenât you?â
âI-I-I-I-I, um-â Chidi stuttered, but their gleeful chortles freed him explanation.
âGo ahead, mate,â Simone shooed him off. âJust come back after the dance ends to clean up. Weâre going out to iHop after.â
Chidi confirmed their plans one last time before he left for the gazebo. On the way out, he grabbed his copy of Symposium, the one he had purposely left on the living room table in case he wanted to escape. Deftly, he balanced the book with his plate of shrimp as he pushed open the door. He paused on the steps to appreciate how beautiful the night was, the thickness of the black winter sky, the shimmering stars that lay overhead. The gazebo stood brightly against the dark with its fresh white paint, quickly drawing Chidi in with its solitaire.
Ever since he was a freshman, Chidi sought solace in the gazebo. He frequently snuck away when he needed to be by himself, especially after his grandmother passed away. It boasted a sprawling view of the campus and open panels that breathed in fresh air. Yes, the paint was chipping, and the roof crumbled when it rained, but Chidi loved it nonetheless. Last spring, Tahani held a fundraiser for its restoration, and by fall, it had returned to its former glory. The days of Chidiâs secret, safe place slipped away as he found kids, not even from the Scholarâs Club, using it as a gathering spot to down shots. He was surprised no one was out here right now. He hoped it stayed that way.
Chidi closed his eyes, listening to the plucking of the guitar seep out of the house. He was in his favorite place. The music inside was slowing, the shadows were swaying loosely, and he felt, just for once, that he could handle things.
He opened his book and begin to read.
âHey nerd,â A brash voice echoed from the doorway mid-paragraph. He snapped his head up to see a familiar frame leaning against the entrance. Wait⊠was that? No⊠it couldnât beâŠ
âAre you reading Plato during the ball?â teased Eleanor. She sauntered over and joined him on the bench.
Chidi opened his mouth to ask her more questions, but instead, he broke into a grin. It was Eleanor. Of course it was Eleanor. No one else was as funny and hard-working and brave as she was. He should have known. He had crushes on both shrimpfreak and Eleanor for the same reasons; how could he not have figured it out before?
âJust needed to get away for a little bit.â He shut back his book and slid it to the side. Eleanor was dressed more casually than normal. Her hair was messy, she sported oversized, food-stained sweats, and still, Chidi couldnât take his eyes off of her. âDid you kn-â
âYeah, yeah, I knew,â Eleanor scoffed. âYou leave your messages open way too much, Chidi.â
âRight,â Chidi couldnât help but laugh. She was right. Tahani was always telling him that, too.
Eleanor bit her lip and gave him a shy smile.
He scooted closer to her.
âUm, I created a rough outline of the project!â She cried. She began fiddling with her fingers. âItâs almost done, we just have to add more details in the slides.â
âYou worked on the project?â Chidi felt himself warm towards her. He knew how much she hated schoolwork. âWithout us there?â
âYeah,â Eleanor shifted in her seat. âI mean, you and Tahani and Jason are all my friends. I just figured it would make things easier for all of us, since I had the time.â
âThat was really nice of you, Eleanor,â His voice fell quietly at the end of his sentence. Eleanor glanced down at her shoes, failing to hide her blush. Chidi wanted to hold her so badly, but he kept talking,
âSo, you emancipated from your parents when you were fourteen?â
âYup. Thatâs why I work three jobs. Iâm surprised you never noticed. Iâve been on shift when you ordered your frozen mochas at the coffeehouse.â
âAnd you like shrimp?â
âMore than I love life itself. And Iâm ready to wolf down this unlimited free shrimp! If Iâm still allowed to, that is.â
Chidi ducked his head down and chuckled to himself. He couldnât wait to talk with her the rest of the night. Â
âI canât believe you came,â he said happily. âIâm really happy you did.â
âYou are?â Eleanorâs eyes shone.
âOf course I am,â He lifted her hand and stroked her palm with his thumb. Eleanor wove her fingers in his and squeezed his hands, leaning her forehead against his.
âIâm sorry,â she apologized. He could feel her shaking against him. âI said no because I freaked out, not because I didnât want to see you.â
âI understand,â Chidi empathized. âI freak out all the time.â
âThat couldnât be more true,â Eleanor agreed endearingly.
They moved in closer to each other.
âEleanor?â Chidi licked his lips nervously. He didnât know why he was about to ask what he was about to ask, but he really wanted to. âCan I- can I kiss you?â
Eleanor beamed up at him.
âGo ahead, bud.â
Chidi sprang his lips onto Eleanorâs, moving his mouth passionately against hers. Eleanor drew back at first, startled, but then she sank into the kiss, her mouth curving against Chidiâs in a smile. Chidi removed his hand from hers and wrapped them around her back, sliding one down to her waist and the other up her back. As Eleanor laid her hands on his stomach and let them travel up to his shoulders, Chidi reveled in having her fingers against his chest. This, he realized, thoughts unlocking as they kissed and kissed, is what he always dreamed of. It was always Eleanor he heard when reading her messages. It was always Eleanor he imagined kissing. It was always Eleanor he longed to be near, and now he finally was: her tiny little body pressed against his, her mouth moving with trademark feistiness he admired and loved.
They kissed until their lips grew weary, reluctantly pulling apart as they clung to each other still. Eleanor gazed up at him, her eyes full, and it struck Chidi that heâd never seen her so happy. Guess they both made each other that way.
Chidi kissed her forehead as she snuggled herself his chest. He felt ready to make million decisions right then, with Eleanor in his arms in his favorite place, the brisk air gusting all around them. Â
âHey, shrimpfreak.â He bumbled as the music spilled back into the gazebo, âDo you- do you maybe want to dance? Um, with me?â
Eleanor laughed, tugging Chidi up onto his feet.
âCome on, Kantafficado.â She wrapped her arms around his neck. âShow me how itâs done.â

Cigarettes and Leather Ch. 4
Long time no see!! (Again)
School got crazy and im stressed to the Max atm. But I really wanted to finish this chapter before AP Exams sooo
;;;;;)
Anyways, Ladybug and Chat Noir finally make their appearance! Along with some other things, but you'll see later...
(also, if you're confused on some of the stuff in the chapter that has to do with the french school system, just see the end notes)
Summary: Chat Noir is adorable, and Ladybug more then agrees (and so does Marinette). Â
Word Count: 4,000+Â
A week had gone by since Marinette had (albeit strangely) resolved to become friends with Adrien-freaking-Agreste.
A week had gone by since Marinette had (albeit strangely) resolved to become friends with Adrien-freaking-Agreste.
A whole week.
A week.
Only a week.
Ladybug paced back and forth on the gravel roof she occupied, hands clasped behind her back out of habit. Below her, cars honked, lights blurred, and soft music of all sorts overlaid the pressing silence in her conscience as she contemplated events from the past few days.
Life had been almost the same, except Adrien and she had been hanging around each other more often than all four of their years in college combined. For one, his presence had frequented their homeroom almost every day that week, including early morning roll-call (which he never used to attend). He had stopped sitting in the back, instead opting to sit in the front with Nino, even if all they did was mess around and get scolded by Mrs. Bustier (Alya griped that her boyfriend was being wooed away by Adrien more and more). He was even seen around the courtyard by many people during their lunch period, even though it was resoundingly known that he smoked cigarettes behind the school wall where the cameras couldnât catch him during that time frame.
It would good to mention the eye contact they made throughout all this was embarrassingly excessive, as they were constantly stealing glances at each other in plain sight.
It would also be good to mention that the glances increased in number when they were alone together in detention.
And the blushing, a voice in her head chimed unhelpfully, lots of blushing!
Ladybug groaned out loud, practically stomping in place to expel the thought from her mind.
God, spare me from these weird emotions!
In the span of seven days, the relationship she had with Adrien had been accelerating at a fast rate, as well as the way she felt about him. She knew she needed to take their friendship at a slower pace, but chatting with him had recently become her favorite pastime. Adrien had a lot of hidden qualities she didnât know about until now, and every interaction brought a new surprise for her to take delight in.
ExceptâŠ
She still has yet to see that soft side of him she saw on the steps of their school, with his sunny smile and soft pink cheeks.
Of course, even with all his personality traits he had been hiding from her now up in the air, Adrien was still the flirtatious rebel who wore leather and cussed far more than a person who smoked three times a day should; his temper was still intact too, in addition to his show-off attitude. It is unfair to expect him to warm up to her enough to show her such a reserved part of him in the short time theyâve been getting to know each other; just as she had certain things she uncomfortable with opening up to him about, it was vice-versa for Adrien (she suspected).
Even soâŠ
If it took as long as their last day on campus, Marinette was determined to coax that shining part of him from beneath all the storm clouds and smog. She didnât know why, but that brief, brief interaction with the other Adrien felt so familiar and tangible, like she was looking at her favorite design or talking with Chat Noir.
At least, thatâs how she felt but maybe she was mistaking the feeling for something it wasnât.
It would just be nice to see Adrien relax and enjoy everyoneâs company, because he is definitely on most of the classâs shit list as of late.
Then again, when is he not?
God, I should stop thinking about this now.
Ladybug stopped walking to look up at the night sky, pleased to find the stars winking down in greeting. She let her gaze wander from the stars to the streets, allowing her eyelids to crescent pleasantly. It was a cool, breezy October evening, the perfect weather for that period in the month. This was her absolute favorite time of year to patrol Paris, with the autumn season at its peak and the atmosphere of serenity overlaying their beautiful city (along with the multi-colored leaves!). Everything seemed so connected and harmonious it was hard for Marinette not to escape life for a little while and appreciate her surroundings for what they were worth.
That is, until Tikki scolds me for not doing my homework.
Chuckling at the memory, the female began scanning the Paris scape for a familiar figure, searching for any sign of her partner. Chat Noir always arrived at their meeting spot around this time, but tonight it was apparent he would be late.
As long as he isnât too late, or else weâll be out until two in the morning againâŠ
âLadybug!â A voice from behind shouted, and Marinette smiled.
Speak of the devil.
She turned to address the voice, extending an arm in the air as a hello.
âChat Noir! Little late, arenât we?â She teased as the male landed on the roof, earning a shy smile in return.
Cutie.
âIâm sorry, mâlady! I was so busy with my shoot-âŠI mean my civilian stuff that time just flew by, you know? HahaâŠâ Chat Noir tittered, rubbing the back his neck. Ladybug just shook her head good naturedly and patted his shoulder in reassurance.
âIâm kidding, kitty. You were only a few minutesâ late, not a few hoursâŠunlike last time.â She added, frowning slightly as she recalled a particularly nasty akuma that had cropped up the night that Chat just had to be absent for three hours. By the time he arrived at the scene, Ladybug had successfully stopped the akuma and handed over the victim to the police. He profusely apologized for a good fifteen minutes before Marinette felt bad and forgave him with her kindest smile. He really is too nice for his own good.
âLast time will never happen again, I purr-omise you! Besides, I now have an alarm on my phone that goes off whenever its patrol night!â Chat smiled proudly, revealing pearly white teeth for Ladybug to admire. His cheeks dimpled while a soft blush dusted his slightly-scrunched nose, and Ladybug forgot how to speak for a moment.
How can someone in a leather body suit manage to be so damn adorable?!?! This is unfair!
âR-Really? Thatâs smart, why havenât I thought of it beforeâŠâ She mumbled, looking away to hide her bashful expression. Chat cocked his head to the side in confusion at her reaction, but shrugged it off shortly after.
âHaha, dunno, sounds like a you problem. You know, Iâm the brain and youâre the brawn?â Chat joked nudging her with his elbow and grinning like an idiot. Ladybug nudged him right back, adding a little more force to hers. He lost his footing for a split second, arms spiraling to regain balance.
âIâm the brawn alright, kitty.â She remarked, watching the sheepish blush return to his face.
He can be so shy sometimes, I worry.
Chat Noir coughed, shaking the banana locks from that were obscuring his vision out of his face. His emerald stare landed on her again, more serious, which caused butterflies to erupt in her stomach. Although they were surrounded by the jade of his retina, she could tell the shade would be absolutely stunning without the mask.
You canât have thoughts like this Marinette you know the rules!
âI think we should start our patrol, now, mâlady. You know that I know that we both have homework to get home to before tomorrow.â Chat took on a slightly scolding tone, referencing to the fact that it was a Sunday night and they both procrastinated all weekend.
Well, I did at least, Marinette felt herself grimace as she thought of the tablet full of literature and art history homework waiting on her work desk in her room.
Chat Noir took out his vault, readying it for launch until Ladybug swiftly clasped his tail, causing him to yelp in surprise.
âNot so fast, mister! We need to discuss a little something-something!â Ladybug exclaimed brightly, her homework all but forgotten.
Chat gave her a cautionary glance, looking from the landscape beyond them to her face. He retracted his staff immediately and placed it on his back holster, ears perked in curiosity; his lips curled into a nervous smile.
âWhat do you mean, mâlady?â He batted his eyelashes out of habit, and Marinette had to hold back a tickled squeal. He was so good looking, even with the mask, it was hard to cope sometimes.
Really hard.
Marinette swallowed, clearing her throat and straightening her posture.
âYour birthday is coming up, right? Next week, I think?â Ladybug asked directly, cheeks reddening ever so subtly.
Chat blinked at her slowly.
âYeahâŠnext Monday, the 20th . Why do you ask?â He fiddled with his hands, tapping his claws on his wrists.
âWhy do I ask? Isnât it obvious, kitty! We should do something nice, like hang out. Whatever age youâre turning, Iâm sure itâs worth celebrating.â Ladybug gave him a mega-watt smile, taking his hands into hers with excitement etched into her body language.
Chat broke into a grin, holding her hands back with more force then necessary. He looked breath taking like that while bathed by the moonlight and stars.
âWait, really? Are you serious? Iâd love to do something with my best friend!â The words âbest friendâ fractured Ladybugâs heart, but she forced herself to get over it. Not now, dummy.
âThatâs good to hear, kitty! We can discuss what the birthday boy agenda is on Tuesdayâs patrol, but for now I think we need to start this one.â Marinette giggled happily, tugging her poor fingers from Chatâs iron-like grip. âYou know, before we turn into pumpkins.â She winked.
Play it cool, LB, play it cool.
âAwesome! Purr-fect! I think I can manage to wait until Tuesday for this.â Chat once again took out his staff, this time with more finality. âRace you to the first lookout point. Last one there is a ball of yarn.â
Ladybug rolled her eyes at his cheesy parody, slipping her yoyo from her hip and readying the string.
âYouâre such a cheese ball, Chat Noir.â
âDonât you mean hairball?â
âYeah, yeah, sooo funny. Youâre on, kitty!â
They both took off running, and she could hear his laughter over the roar of the wind.
---
By the time Ladybug bid Chat Noir a âgood nightâ and âsee you on Tuesday, or the next akuma attackâ (whichever comes first), it was already 10:30 PM. Ten minutes later, she had dropped through the trap door above her bed and already wanted to give up all responsibility and go to sleep. Unfortunately, her plan was foiled by Tikki, who was very insistent that Marinette stay up at least an hour and a half more âto get as much done as possibleâ.
âAs much doneâ my ass, Iâll get a C on my work either way.
âBut Tikkiââ Marinette drawled out, already painstakingly making her way down the bed ladder, âMy muscles are sore and Iâm super tiredâ!â She made sure to drag out each word to show how unwilling she was to do a two-page report on the blind, French painter Claude Monet.
âI understand, Marinette, but you still need to keep your grades up too! Since we got home late, I can help you out a little.â Tikki patted her cheek sympathetically, and flew to her compartment on Marinetteâs desk to fish out a cookie from her designated cookie jar.
The female whined, but nevertheless complied with her kwamiâs wishes and dragged her exhausted body to her pink desk chair. Plopping down in a heavy manner on the cushioned seat, Marinette grabbed her touchscreen stylus and booted up her tablet. As soon as she typed in her password, the lass got to work first on her advanced literature homework (they were currently reading Oedipus, and she honestly could not be more disgusted with most of the characters). After scanning and finishing three mind-numbing acts, she began planning out the outline for her report on Claude Monet.
I think my hair is going to fall out at this rate.
Marinette stopped writing to gaze into oblivion at the countless pictures decorating her desk-top surface and wall, opting to tune Tikkiâs brief explanation on the history of Monetâs The Japanese Footbridge oil canvas. She had tacked various newspaper clippings of Ladybug and Chat Noirâs accomplishments on the wall next to the computer, each scrap artfully arranged to circle a single framed photo of them.
This is still my favorite picture of Chat and I.
The photo had been taken by Alya, who caught them immediately after an akuma battle that took place in the park near the bakery. It had been a sunny, spring day with only a few clouds to be seen. Ladybug had been in mid-fist bump with Chat Noir when Alya had rushed over and begged for a picture of them in front of the park fountain, in which they agreed.
She made them stand on the edge of the fountain, arms hooked together while their legs were spread apart, like a super hero pose. They were told to smile big for the camera, and Ladybug did until Chat decided to crack a pun at the last second, which sent the two of them into hysterics by the time Alya snapped a shot of them on her phone. With the spray of the water and perfect natural lighting coupled with their genuine grins and stares cast to each other, the picture was perfect.
We hadnât even been partners for a year, but we were so hopeful and full of laughter.
Those were the simpler days alright.
Marinetteâs heart suddenly ached with longing for the past, when she was young and excitable for every akuma thrown at her. She missed getting to know Chat for the first time, and feeling the thrill of a new crush, when it didnât hurt so much. She missed being chased around by Alya for the Ladyblog, when her bestfriend didnât have a joint-partnership with the news channel so others could do that job for her.
Everything had changed so much since then, when Marinette was still learning what being Ladybug truly meant.
Now she was almost an adult, with a future to think about and priorities to straighten out.
Life moves on, whether we like it or not.
The sound of a phone chiming interrupted Marinetteâs train of thought, subsequently ending her internal freak out for the night. Â Tikki, being the saint she was, retrieved it from her school bag and set it down in front of her with an irritated expression.
I bet she knew I stopped listeningâŠ
âWho is it?â The kwami asked as Marinette unlocked her phone.
She scanned her notifications, startled to find that she had seven missed calls from Alya from earlier in the evening.
Strange, but itâs too late to call back now.
âI have seven missed calls from Alya, Tikki. I wonder what was so important.â She said feeling little more than perturbed as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
âThat doesnât sound good. Was the new message from her, then?â
âNo, itâs from-â Marinette began to say, tapping on the conversation.
Adrien: hey u still up?
â-Adrien.â From the corner of her eye, she saw Tikki scowl slightly and cross her tiny arm-like appendages in disfavor. Â
âOh.â The kwami curtly replied, settling on the edge of her shoulder to peer at the tiny screen of the phone. She could feel her judgmental gaze on her hands as Marinette responded to him.
Marinette: Yeah. Currently dying over an art history report atm.
Adrien: o? sucks to be u then lmao I finished all my hw
Marinette: Lucky you. Whats your stream btw?
Adrien: humanities. 4 hrs of French. Lit, then philosophy, English, geo, history, physics
Marinette: Same here, but ik I have lit and philosophy with you. For me, I have English, geo and art history is 2 hours.
Adrien: the fuck??? art history sounds boring asf
Marinette: Look whos talking, you take physics. How will that help you on le bac?
Adrien: stfu kim is in there bc nino and ivan were bastards an didnât want a maths
Adrien: tho he always talks shit w/ Max so i hve to force myself 2 be interested in physics
Marinette: Whatever you say, nerd.
Adrien: stfu im getting a call so ttyt
Marinette: K bye.
Marinetteâs soft smile that had formed when they started texting dissipated into a frown at Adrienâs abrupt exit. She set aside her phone slowly, hoping he would come back again but that was not the case.
Who would be calling him so late at night? WeirdâŠ
âHe left so quickly even though he was the one that contacted you first, Marinette. Donât you think thatâs rude of him?â Tikki observed, huffing.
Marinette stretched her arms above her head, yawning.
âNo, not really. I just think itâs weird that someone would be calling him so late at night. I wonder who it could be.â She stood up as she replied, being especially careful not to make noise with her office chair. Tikki watched her movement, eyes alight with curiosity.
âI seeâŠwait, where are you going? Downstairs?â
âYeah, Iâm just going to get water.â Marinette padded across the room, as quiet as a mouse. Just when she opened her floor hatch an inch, voices from downstairs drifted into her room. Frozen in place, she listened cautiously to see who would be up so late at night (besides her and Tikki, of course).
What the hell?
The quiet buzz of the living room TV and the hushed voices of her parents registered in her brain, and Marinette immediately felt her shoulders relax. They were just watching the newsâ
Hold on a minute.
The female tensed again, more anxious then before. It was very unlike her parents to stay up so late on a weekday, especially since her father woke up at four every day to ready the bakery for early morning customers. In addition to this, her mother had always come up around ten oâclock to kiss her goodnight, but she had yet to do that. Something on the television was keeping them uncharacteristically occupied, or at least that is what she gathered from the grave mood downstairs.
But, what is it? Mama and Papa only whisper when theyâre worriedâŠ
Marinette instinctively leaned forward, eager to find out what the newswoman was saying.
ââŠGang violenceâŠcollege studentâŠunusual injuryâŠâ Nadja Chamack spoke professionally into what the girl assumed to be a microphone. Tikki landed on her shoulder, also listening closely.
Gang violence? What? Itâs too hard to hear!
âTwo studentsâŠbadly hurtâŠDupontâŠâ She heard Tikki gasp when Nadja rattled off the names of the incident. Thoroughly perplexed, Marinette edged the door open even more, practically sticking her head down the stairs. Whatever Manonâs mother just said, it was enough to shock her kwami.
Instead of quietly keeping her perch, Tikki flew off her shoulder and pushed her tiny appendages against her cheek.
âMari, no, donât listen! Itâs not something you want to hear!â She squeaked, and the heroine yelped.
âWhat do you-ack!â
Naturally, this action backfired and she lost balance of her feet and crashed to the carpet rather loudly while slamming the trapdoor shut.
âOh, shit! Tikki, hide!â The female whispered frantically, scampering to her bed post and up the ladder. Tikki was close behind.
They both hid under the polka-dotted covers, with the kwami nestled into the crook of her elbow. Somehow, in her scramble and the excitement of that night, Marinette had lost on of her precious pig-tails, and now her frizzy hair was splayed all along the pillow like a raven halo of madness.
Goddammit, I hate when my hair is down! Where did my hair tie go
Just then, the door slammed open and Marinette heard the familiar patter of her fatherâs footsteps, her mother following in suit.
âMarinette, darling? Is something wrong?â Sabine spoke, an unusual edge to her voice.
Stay still, stay still!
Marinette dared not to respond, curling around Tikki to shield her from prying eyes. The bed rattled as the mother climbed up to check on her daughter, every tremor setting the female further on high alert. A thorn of anxiety wedged itself in her heart when she felt a small hand touch her ankle.
Donât react!
âSweetheart, is she awake?â Tom asked, walking closer to his wife.
âNo, I donât think soâŠbut if she isnât awake, then what was that noise?â Her mother worriedly curled her tiny fingers around Marinetteâs ankle, and she had to fight from flinching.
âSabine, I think youâre still on edge from the newscast. I doubt anyone could sneak into our daughterâs room without me hearing them.â Tom said confidently. Marinette smirked to herself, biting down a chuckle.
Oh, papa, if only you knewâŠ
âBut still, TomâŠit happened those poor boys.â Sabine let go of her ankle and climbed down the ladder again, and Marinette peeked over her covers ever the slightest to look at her parents.
Tom had an arm slung around Sabineâs shoulders in a comforting manner, while Sabine looked deeply distressed.
Her mother pursed her lips.
âImagine how devastated sheâll be when she finds out tomorrow, Tom. Should we even let her go to school?â
What the hell are they talking about?! I have a bad feeling about all of this.
âNonsense, dear! Francois Dupont has a strict no strangersâ policy, plus the college is right next to the house. We can watch her go if it will make you feel better, but our little girl can handle her own as you know.â Both parents shared a knowing look and Marinette blushed in embarrassment.
YeahâŠthey would know after all these years, wouldnât they?
Sabine nodded in agreement to her husbandâs proposal, slipping an arm around his waist.
âI would like that. Now, letâs leave before we actually wake her up.â Marinette ducked hurriedly out of sight when her mother glanced at her bed, praying she didnât notice her staring.
As soon the trap door shut, and the footsteps of her parents grew further away until the night was silent again, Marinette jerked from her fetal position on the mattress. She stared wide-eyed at Tikki, the both of them attempting to process the confusing information her parents had bestowed upon them by accident.
âTikki, you donât thinkâŠ?â Marinette trailed off, the worst coming to mind.
What if an akuma attack happened without me knowing, and citizens were severely injured?
What if an akuma knocked over the Eiffel Tower and crushed a shopping strip?
What if Hawk Moth himself came out of hiding and is now wreaking havoc on Paris?
What if-
Tikki vigorously shook her head at Marinetteâs implication, frowning deeply.
âWe would have definitely known if there was an akuma attack, Marinette.â Tikki said bluntly, crossing her arms in a thoughtful manner. âThis has to be something else and something very bad.â
Marinette did not miss the note of worry tinging her kwamiâs voice, or the nervous twitch of her antenna. Judging by her demeanor, there was another force Tikki seemed to be apprehensive of.
But what?
âShould I transform and sweep the city again? Maybe Iâll find what Mama and Papa were talking about.â The girl questioned, dread pooling in the bottom of her stomach. Butterflies were twisting her insides around, and they felt much worse than the presence of any of Hawk Mothâs creations.
In the distance, the blades of a helicopter could be heard, sending goosebumps to dance along the edges of her spine. Car honked, and music played, but something felt very off about the night now.
Marinette stood up on her bedspread and curled a hand around the trapdoor handle leading to the roomâs balcony, hesitant to open it. It was almost eleven oâclock at night, and she had school tomorrow; but, if she didnât do this now, the anxiety would eat at her until sunrise. Tikki seemed to have sensed her indecision, and came to rest on her shoulder.
âMarinette, you donât have to do this right now. We have all tomorrow to investigate, and Iâm sure whatever happened will be the talk of Paris for a day. Get some rest tonight, and youâll feel refreshed for tomorrow!â She spoke softly, nuzzling into the femaleâs cheek in a comforting manner.
Marinette let her hand drop from the door handle, suddenly exhausted.
Sheâs right. I canât do much right now if I donât know anything, especially in the condition Iâm in.
She let herself fall back onto the bed once more, turning on her side and dipping her knees onto her abdomen. Faint light from the window below her loft illuminated the dark space of the room, casting flickering shadows on the soft pink walls. The muffled murmur of her monitor and tablet could be heard, filling her ears with a strangely familiar buzz.
It was eerie.
Hopefully the situation wonât escalate to something worse by tomorrow morningâŠ
Happy? Surprised? Intrigued?
Can you guess what happened at the end of the chapter?? (im curious hah)
Also, I'm so happy that a lot of you like the story thus far!! I never expected such an out-pour of support, tbh, but it just really motivates me to write more and get better at my writing style.
Le Bacc** okay so in french education it is basically this big test seniors in high school take at the end of their high school career, where they had previously, for two years, been taking classes that were specifically aimed towards their career path, but they don't call it 'career path' they call it a 'stream' (I.E. students in the literary stream prepare for careers in the humanities such as education, linguistics, and public service. They also have interests in the arts. The most important subjects in the literary stream are Philosophy and French language & literature and other languages, usually English, German and Spanish.)

Morning Pages #40 (06.03.2017)
Monday 6th March - 1:19 p.m.
Morning pages number forty for today, which Iâm feeling pretty proud of myself over. I know itâs not much of a big fete considering how many days Iâve skipped writing these because of everything thatâs happened over this past month, but even so Iâm at least glad Iâve stuck with it this far. I didnât write anything yesterday because honestly the whole day was spent in the most idyllic way. Evan and I pretty much spent the day with each other, minus a couple of hours where he had basketball practice in the morning and I went to meet Jerica at Greensy. I slept over at his on Saturday night after going to his friend Claudiaâs 18th with him, because there was a huntsman at Emilyâs place (since Friday night, really) and it had moved from the living room to the bedroom over Saturday, whilst we were out. Evan tried to move it with me but we ended up just making it incredibly aggravated and it hid in the little gap between the curtain and the north wall of the bedroom. In the end we just decided that the easiest and safest thing to do was for me to go home with him and at least get a little sleep in a spider-less room. It was rather lovely in the end, considering we werenât ready to say goodbye to each other on Saturday night anyway. A bunch of his friends asked us to go to Merri Park and smoke with them and I was honestly kind of tempted, because it was free and because I was thinking it would be kind of fun to get high with him. He said that he wanted to get high with me for the first time at his brotherâs place, because then Iâd get to meet his brother and his brotherâs girlfriend too. He really loves me. Itâs a little baffling that somebody could just fall in love with me so quickly after the grief I experienced with Ikaros, the months that I waited for him to catch up to me in regards to the feelings that I had developed for him. After a year and a half of wishing somebody would love me the way I loved them, itâs just so refreshing being with somebody who could love me instantly, whose so sure of his love for me that it feels absurd not to let me know purely for conventionâs sake alone.
Evan and I stayed up again last night, because we couldnât get enough of each otherâs company. We did this challenge he found online this one time: 36 questions to fall in love. The idea is that two people sit down and answer the same 36 questions given by the website and that by the end of the 36 questions, theyâd have either fallen in love or would be falling in love, because of the intimate nature of the questions. The answers Evan and I managed to share with each other did turn out to be rather intimate. I was surprised by how much I managed to tell him. I told him about the time thathi broke my bed whilst I was on it, and about achchi amma and seeya thatha taking care of me and all the jigsaw puzzles seeya thatha would number for me. I told him a little more about my being sick, and about my mother. In turn, he told me about his parents and growing up in his brotherâs shadow, of being a shy child and how he believes that being that closed off for so long has allowed him to become the open and free person that he is now. We were both surprised to discover through answering these questions, that neither of us have really managed to hold onto any childhood regret or embarrassment, that weâve allowed ourselves to be unburdened of all our past shames. We are not at all pent up, and this revelation was such a welcome occurrence. I also discovered that affection and love play a major role in his life, and he considers them to be perhaps the most important things he could hold. I agreed. I donât know if it shows through these pages, but Iâm a person who loves giving myself to others. I enjoy spending time with the people I love, and showing people that I love them. I trust wholeheartedly and from the beginning of any relationship (romantic or platonic), and will always believe that people are inherently good. There was a question that asked what superpower or special skill would we ask for if we could have one. Not only did he guess straight away that I would say âflightâ, but he also answered with âuniversal compassionâ for himself. He said that he wants to be the kind of person who can put himself in another personâs shoes without fail, and will then always understand why people act the way they have. Heâs already so compassionate, so sincere and kind and sure of himself, Iâm sure heâs not far off from attaining this universality he so strives for. I love him so much. I told him last night that I had never been with someone who had brown eyes before, like not romantically, and that being with him was like being at home, and looking into his eyes felt like I was looking at somebody who knew me and who understood me.
He told me that he had made a promise to his ex, that when he meets somebody else and moves on from her, he wouldnât let her know and heâd even try and keep the knowledge of his new relationship from her. He told me last night though, that he kind of just hopes that he wonât have to see or speak to her again because what we have now is so so important and he doesnât want anything to jeopardise it or potentially harm it in any way. I just took a massive break from writing too, because I had to send him a link to the song âWarm Enoughâ by The Social Experiment because I just realised that J. Cole is the guy who wrote the last verse of that song, and also that song kind of reminds me of all the ways that Ikaros failed me, or I guess all the ways we failed each other, and the way that that relationship made me feel: like a thing that was second to him, not equal to him. But J. Coleâs verse in that song shows that the person who considers themselves first before all others, is also experiencing some remorse over their inherent ways. Itâs not that Noname Gypsy is not warm enough for summertime, itâs just that J. Cole is. I mean the respective voices that they adopt in the song. I told Evan about all the difficulty I had with getting Ikaros to consider my feelings and to be emotionally faithful to me, and how his actions during our time together kind of drove me towards meeting and being with other people even whilst I was with him. I told him that I technically did cheat or at least felt like I did cheat in my last relationship, because I was really only doing exactly what Ikaros had been doing. Evan told me that it didnât sound like Ikaros really respected me, so I was in the clear morally, because Iâm a person too and I deserve to feel loved. I canât believe I met him, I really canât. I think meeting him has become a highlight in my life. I donât know, everythingâs happened so quickly and I know the rest of it doesnât have to follow this rapid trend, but I wouldnât actually mind if it did. Even so, we have enough time. I expect to know him for decades to come. I feel like what I have with him could stand the test of time. I feel like we both really want it too as well. I feel like heâs already writing me into his future. And Iâm writing him into mine, and Iâm really happy just thinking about this.
He went into the city before he came to see me yesterday, around 3 p.m. was when we finally met up after I left his place in the morning. He rocked up with a little JBL Charge 3, which is a smaller version of the massive portable speaker akki got Anthony for Christmas this year. We spent what was essentially the entire day yesterday showing each other our music. I listened to J. Coleâs last two albums, and he listened to âAcid Rapâ and also âThe Social Experimentâ, their first album. We also had sex a bunch of times this weekend, three to be precise. The first time was as organised on Saturday, before Claudiaâs 18th. It was funny though, because we were acting really insanely cute at that party and Evanâs friends asked how long weâd been together and we said âjust over a monthâ because it had been, and they would woo whenever we kissed or anything, and referred to us at one point as an old married couple, because of the way we behaved around each other; there was an air of comfort and familiarity with us that seems odd to have been attained only within a month or so of knowing each other. Also keeping in mind the fact that that day also happened to be the first day weâd had sex, it was just kind of funny to think that we had maybe strengthened that level of comfort by becoming more physically intimate. The sex was fantastic, by the way. It was as intense as I thought it would be and I was very into it, even though he was fingering me during the foreplay. I only told him this morning that historically I didnât like fingering too much, but itâs actually really really hot when he does it. I think itâs because his hands are so large and tough, masculine. Goodness, I could talk about this for days. But Iâm typing this all at uni right now, between my classes. I have advanced screenwriting in a little over an hour, about 70 minutes. The class goes until 5:45 p.m. and I donât have enough time to eat anything beforehand so Iâll probably leave that class feeling rather hungry. All I had for breakfast was a small bowl of porridge and a little square of Lindt chocolate. I made breakfast for us today and I also made Evan lunch on Saturday and dinner last night, but the last two meals were literally just spicy mi goreng. Iâm feeling a little sleepy right now, because I only got about four hours of sleep last night, because I was so immersed in this boy. Weâve been killing sleep at every opportunity weâve had to be together. Heâs coming over again tomorrow, so Iâll be sleeping alone tonight after spending the last two nights with him. We spoke about this right before we parted ways this morning, about how tonight is going to be a bit lonely. But Tuesday night will be lovely again, and weâll get to sleep in on Wednesday morning too. We also kind of slept in today. I mean I woke up a bit before 7:30 a.m. and he woke up whilst I was in the bathroom, so unfortunately he had to wake up alone. I felt really bad about that. Anyway, we only really left bed at 10:30 a.m., because we were listening to music for a little while longer. And then we had sex again, and it was really really fun but also a little fast because I gave him head beforehand so I think he was perhaps already halfway to cumming before he put the condom on. I wanted to go down on him though, because heâs so sweet and sweet people like him deserve blowjobs. I donât even know what to write about, how to structure this morningâs pages, because thereâs just so much wonderful stuff to talk about and I know I canât possibly talk about all of it. In fact, Iâm toying with the idea of just writing a fourth page right now to make up for the fact that I didnât write anything yesterday, maybe a descriptive piece of this boy. Oh, I have a few more things to say about the questions we asked of each other last night. There was a question that asked us to name five things each that we enjoyed or admired of our partner. He said that he loved my nose and the way itâs so defined, and how its definition adds to the already impressive quality of my smile. He said that he also loved how my bottom lip has a perfect part in the middle. He likes the way my hair can be pushed to one side and can stay put, and the way my hair frames my face. He likes my singing voice! He heard me sing a lot yesterday. He likes the way I can grow bashful in front of him, and the way that I curl up next to him. Some things he didnât even want to tell me, because he felt that they were secret things that he just wanted to silently cherish or enjoy. He wasnât going to tell me about the bottom lip thing but then I asked if these things he admired were things I might change or grow self-conscious of if he were to tell me about them and he decided that I couldnât change the lip thing so it wouldnât hurt if he told me. If anything it helped, it made me feel really loved. I didnât know if heâd noticed too much of the detail in my face despite staring at me so much, because Iâve been rather playful and active with my exploration of him, I mean Iâm always touching his face and his upper body. To be fair, heâs been using his hands a lot too, but mostly on my back and my hips and my ass, and my legs, not so much with my face. He really likes my ass. I think itâs safe to assume at this point that I have a great ass. I know I shouldnât objectify myself but I just canât help but feel really really happy right now, okay? Donât take this from me. Let me be a little indulgent, and feel really grateful and satisfied and loved. I feel like Iâve been starved for this level of emotional intimacy for far too long. The way weâve been taking each other in, itâs been so raw and uninhibited, and weâve just been on the same wavelength the entire time. Everything feels really smooth and RIGHT.
Okay itâs a little past 2:30 p.m. now and I need to do my reading before my tutorial starts, so I think Iâm going to end this fourth page here, about halfway down the page. Actually, Iâm a bit over halfway. Itâs not about filling space though, right? These pages are getting easier to fill and I think the reason why is because Iâve been writing shit for the past few weeks. I havenât been challenging myself, giving myself prompts or any restrictions to aid in the creation of a marketable, shareable piece. It could easily be a personal narrative piece, if I just make myself write more elegantly as I do in these pages. I have read back through what Iâve written in these pages occasionally, and everything reads as a rather basic journaling exercise. Yes. I think itâs time to challenge myself, explore some new genres and shake it up a bit. Maybe I can try some actual journalism tomorrow. I had my second lecture for that subject just now. We looked at interviewing skills, technique and etiquette mostly. Our example interviewer was Jeremy Paxman, who straight up asked a politician why he failed? Like he had a bit of background info, and then delivered the question as âWhy did you fail?â. How much more straightforward and brutal can you get? He did come off as a bit condescending at times, but at others he seemed more passionate and sincerely interested in what his subjects had to say, and also in calling out his subjects on their bullshit. Iâd like to see what I can accomplish in this class. I might end up surprising myself, although itâs hard to say that too, considering my past difficulties with journalistic writing.
