Stiff back, pain when bending, low energy, inability to focus on any work… do you face these issues regularly too? Do not worry, you are not alone. You’ll be surprised to know that 60-70% of the adult population suffers from some form of back pain. Mostly it is due to stress and long working hours in the sitting posture, incorrect postures when working, etc. With work from home during the pandemic, these figures have shot up. People usually take it easy in a home atmosphere and during the early months of lockdown, no one really bothered with sitting at desks to work. However, you must pay close attention to these health concerns and start working towards getting rid of nagging back pain immediately. When you start looking for solutions to this problem, it is common that you look for a less physically and financially strenuous program. Many websites claim to offer you freedom from back pain, but please remember that most of them do not work and may even further aggravate the issue. You must pick a well-reviewed, tested program that is more effective with minimum strain on your back. Here we review ‘Backpain Breakthrough’, a unique program that is so much easier than you would have imagined. It has been developed by Amy Palmer who also was plagued with back problems and got over the same by the strengthening moves which she teaches here for people with similar symptoms. What is Backpain Breakthrough Backpain Breakthrough is a program that teaches you the most effective strengthening moves which you can do in your own leisure time at home and without much effort. The moves will relax tense and tight muscles, and your pain will be gone! This program offers a permanent, quick, and natural cure. You get detailed instructions on the safe drug-free method to decompress and strengthen your joints. The program helps you get back to your life, improve your overall health, posture, and mobility. Backpain Breakthrough gives you full details on why and how back pain is caused and how to eliminate it. Once you start practicing the steps given at the site, you will be able to see the effects within 30 days. The whole deal is of course valid if you religiously follow the instructions on a regular basis. All you need is dedication, persistence, and a little time. How it works To understand how Backpain Breakthrough works, let us take a quick look at the causes of chronic back pain: Muscle or ligament strain – any sudden movement or constant heavy lifting weakens the lower back muscles and bones Herniated disc – sometimes the soft material within the spinal discs may rupture putting pressure on the spinal nerve and cause pain Sciatica – a bulged disc presses the sciatic nerve that connects the spine to the legs, causing pain in the legs and feet Spinal stenosis – when the spinal column gets narrowed down due to various reasons, there is pressure and pain in the spinal cord and nerves Bone conditions – Osteoporosis, spondylitis, fibromyalgia are some conditions that cause lower back pain Also factors such as lack of exercise, excess weight, psychological conditions, age, and smoking cause lower back pain Backpain Breakthrough teaches you how to engage in exercises that do not cause too much strain on your back. Walking and swimming are two excellent examples of such activities. You will know how to focus on ab and core muscles to bring strength around the back. The program contains a six-part video Master class conducted by Dr. Steve Young. He explains the various techniques that he invented for the permanent cure of back pain. He explains how many times to repeat the exercise, how to carry it out, and the best time to do it. Then he explains each of the exercises and the best positions for them. The videos are clear, the exercises are well-demonstrated and correct postures for each are explicitly shown. In case you are unable to perform some exercises, alternatives are also given for you. The
program comes with videos, PDF guides, and other associated digital materials that teach you strategies to get rid of back pain. You can do the workout from anywhere and get your body back to normalcy with more flexibility and better bone alignments. The precise and gentle movements shown help in supporting a healthy spine. The program starts with a 10- minute routine and goes on to explain and guide in kinesiology and exercise science. If nothing else, it is absolutely enjoyable – there are so many things you can learn by just watching the videos. You will start experiencing strong abs and better balance and stability by following the guidelines in this program. You will also learn how to get back your health and go painless naturally. You will get back your effortless posture and stability to your back and other joints. There are multiple levels in the program and modifications to suit persons of all ages. As bonuses to the program, you will get: Targeted Spinal Release: The Manual Advanced Healing Techniques: Bonus Guide The Positive Aspects It can be practiced by people of all ages Quick pain relief Developed by an expert in the field Cost-efficient solution 60-day full refund guarantee Affordable price A natural method to get relieved of the pain No side effects, absolutely safe and natural No intake of drugs Non-surgical methods Quick tips and resources – recovery is also prompt The Negative Aspects As each person’s problem is different, the program may or may not work for all Not a substitute for medical care No print book or DVD is available Cannot buy the program if there is no proper internet connection Results may vary if all the steps are not followed meticulously Final Verdict The program is designed in such a way that you avoid any surgery or medication. Your problem gets solved by performing simple exercises. Within a few days itself, you can experience relaxed muscles and relief from pain. You just have to think of the comfort and security you will get by repairing your body with a few simple workouts. Rather than spending your hard-earned money consulting surgeons and looking for other alternatives, you can definitely give this program a shot. You should be able to see the results within a few days of following the program. If you do not see it working for you, you can always claim your money back! I rate this program 5 stars! Unlike a few medical conditions, low back pain has to be taken seriously as it can lead to many other complications and may ultimately become untreatable. With no side effects, surgery, or medication involved, this system has already proved beneficial to many of those who used it. Devised by people who have a thorough knowledge of human anatomy, the program has earned the trust of many who have been completely relieved of the pain and associated symptoms. So go ahead and start the program to enjoy freedom from back pain!

The Devil’s Rocking Chair
The horror began in July 1980 when David Glatzel, 11, became possessed by a demon. One night, he woke up screaming, claiming that he had been visited by a “man with big black eyes, a thin face with animal features, jagged teeth, pointed ears, horns, and hooves.” David was, everyone agreed, not the kind of kid who liked scary movies or who was likely to make things up, and he was visibly shaken by this experience. He became withdrawn and quiet. His older sister, Debbie, asked her fiancée, Arne Johnson, if he would stay with her family for a while and see whether it would help David get out of his depression.
Arne, of course, agreed, but things didn’t get better. David reported more nightmares about the terrifying man, who promised to take his soul. Odd scratches and bruises began to appear on the boy, and all the injuries seemed to happen while he was asleep. Odd sounds, which Arne couldn’t explain, were heard in the attic. Worst of all, David began to claim that he was now seeing the Beast while he was awake. He was always seen sitting in the family’s rocking chair, which the Beast now claimed as his own. David (and later, Lorraine Warren) was the only one who saw the Beast in the chair, but family members often saw it rocking back and forth, seemingly under its own power.
The family first brought over a priest to bless the house. This didn’t help. In fact, it made things worse. The sounds in the attic got louder, David’s visions increased, and he began to hiss at his family and speak with multiple voices. He started to quote from Paradise Lost, a book that most 11-year-olds aren’t exactly familiar with. During the night, someone had to stay up and watch David, who woke every 30 minutes, sometimes having seizures.
Desperate for help, the Glatzels called Ed and Lorraine Warren, who began making regular visits to their home, bringing more priests with them, and performing exorcisms. Many of those exorcisms took place while David was seated in the rocking chair. The chair itself moved about the house on its own, mysterious disappearing and reappearing in different places. Most incredibly, it levitated on numerous occasions in full view of witnesses, including the Warrens, clergy members, and shocked family members. It happened once while David was sitting in it during an exorcism.
After a final exorcism, the demon left David. He soon began to show signs of improvement. However, his sister’s fiancée, Arne Johnson, was not so lucky. Apparently, the demon left David and entered him. He started making the same kind of growls and hisses that David had made, as well as slipping into trances for a period of months before killing his landlord, Alan Bono, with a five-inch pocket knife, stabbing the man over and over as Debbie watched. Bono died a few hours later in the hospital, and Johnson was picked up by the police two miles from the murder scene. Eight months later, Johnson appeared in court with a plan to enter a plea of not guilty, due to demonic possession.
For the first time in American legal history, demonic possession was used as a reason for murder. It didn’t work. Judge Robert Callahan refused to accept the plea since there was no evidence to show that Johnson was possessed. Johnson eventually went to prison for his crime. He was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter and received a 10- to 20-year sentence, although he only served 5. Arne and Debbie married after he was released.
For many years after the horrifying events of 1980, the rocking chair remained in storage. When the Glatzel family later moved, it went with them. However, over time, it became apparent that there was something very wrong with the chair. Whoever sat in the chair, whether innocently or because they knew its strange history, were suddenly stricken with incapacitating sciatica or abnormal back problems. Some were so bad that they required surgery. Once close family member was unable to walk upright more than ten years after testing the legend of the chair.
Today, the Devil’s Rocking Chair is at The Haunted Museum. There are stains on the original cushion from holy water and blessed oils that were part of the exorcisms conducted by Catholic priests and Ed Warren. An evil presence surrounds it, and even before it was on display, it was already causing problems in the building. Soon after it arrived, doors at the museum began shutting themselves and locking, light switches physically turned off, and it created a terrible tension between staff members in the area where the chair was stored.

hey bestie 🥺 im in so much back pain rn and i was just hoping if you could do me some hcs with ukai, kuroo, kenma and aizawa (🥺👉👈 as a lil treat) on how theyd help their s/o cope with chronic pain? i love you so much 💞
anything for you baby. i hope you like it. i love YOU so much.
Ukai:
You had chronic back pain for most of your life.
It affected you most when the weather changed.
You left work early due to the pain and all you wanted to do was take a nice warm bath and lay in bed.
When you got home your boyfriend was sitting on the couch watching a tv show.
“Hi honey, how was work?” He asked as he looked up at you, his smile leaving his lips when he saw the pain that was written all over your face.
“Are you okay?” He asked as he got up from his spot on the couch, walking over to you quickly, placing his hands on your face as he pressed a light kiss to your nose.
“My back is killing me.” You whispered as the pain intensified, tears forming in your eyes.
He placed a kiss to your forehead before he grabbed your hand and led you to your bedroom.
“Take a seat while I get the bath ready.”
Not even 5 minutes later and he walked back into the bedroom. He grabbed your hand and took you to the bathroom where a bubble bath was waiting for you.
“Take a nice long soak and I’ll have dinner ready when you're done.” He said giving you a kiss before leaving you to get undressed.
The hot water did wonders for your back pain and you were so thankful your boyfriend knew exactly how to help alleviate your pain.
You sat in the tub until the water got cold.
When you got out your pain was pretty much gone.
You made your way back into the bedroom to get dressed only to find clothes already laid out for you.
After getting dressed you walked into the living room to see a candlelit dinner ready and your boyfriend was looking at you with the most beautiful smile on his face.
“I thought we could eat and then spend the rest of the night in bed cuddling, and if your pain isn’t gone I got the lotion set out for a massage.”
“Thank you Kei baby.” You said as you walked over to him, placing a sweet kiss to his lips. “I love you.”
He smiled down at you as he placed another kiss to your lips. “I love you most.”
Kuroo:
You didn’t know how it happened, but you somehow got a herniated disc in your back while you were at work.
The pain was so unbearable your boss forced you to go home early.
You were barely able to drive yourself home.
You just prayed your boyfriend was home, so he could help you get out of the car.
While stopped at a stoplight you pulled your phone out and dialed his number.
He answered on the second ring.
“Hey kitten, is everything okay?” He asked knowing it was weird for you to call him while you were supposed to be working.
“Tetsurō, baby.” You whimpered out as you failed to hide how much pain you were in.
“YN baby what’s wrong?”
“I herniated a disc in my back, and I’m in so much pain.”
“Do I need to come get you?” He asked, the worry evident in his voice.
“No, I already left. I’ll be home in 5 minutes, I just don’t think I can get out of the car by myself.” You answered honestly as you tried to fight the tears from falling.
“You won’t have to baby. I’ll be waiting outside okay?” He said as you heard him shuffle in the background.
“Thank you.”
You stayed on the phone with Kuroo until you pulled into your apartment complex, your boyfriend standing outside waiting for you.
He was at your door the second you parked, opening the door for you.
He grabbed your hand and helped you out of the car, grabbing your purse from the passenger seat before closing and locking your car.
He placed his hand on your back and gently led you up the stairs and into your apartment.
Once inside he walked you into your bedroom where a heating pad and pain killers were already out waiting for you.
“I know it’s not much, but I read online that heat should help. I thought about running you a bath, but I don’t think you should be bending down.” He said as he placed the heating pad behind your back as you carefully laid in bed.“I ordered take out and thought we could have a movie night until you feel better.”
You looked up at your boyfriend and gave him the best smile you could. “I don’t know what I did to deserve you, but thank you baby. I love you so much.”
“Anything for you princess, and I think the better question is what did I do to deserve you.” He laughed before leaning down to kiss you. “I love you too kitten.”
Kenma:
You had been diagnosed with sciatica for about a year now, so you would randomly get shooting pains down your lower back and legs.
You had just gotten home from a long shift when the pain started.
It started as an electric shock down your leg and then the numbness hit.
“Kozume!” You yelled as you fell to the ground in pain.
Your boyfriend came running at the sound of your voice.
“YN? What happened!” He asked as he ran over to you, bending down to check on you.
“It happened again.” You cried out as you tried to stop the pain.
“Remember what the doctor said.” He said as he sat down next to you. “Movement helps. Do you remember the stretches?”
You nodded as you grit your teeth.
“Come on baby. I’m right here beside you.” He said as he started the first stretch.
You went through the 6 stretches your doctor told you about, Kenma doing the right beside you and you found the pain slowly disappearing.
“Better?” He asked as he looked over at you, the worry still on his face.
“Much.” You answered as you went to stand up, your boyfriend never leaving your side in case you needed any help. “Thank you baby.” You said as you pressed a kiss to his cheek.
“Anything for you love.” He said as he kissed your lips. “Do you want to watch me play Animal Crossing?”
You looked up at him with a smile and nodded your head. “I’d love to.”
Aizawa:
You woke up with the start of a headache and you thought you were okay to head to work, but man you were wrong.
Not even 30 minutes into your shift and you felt like you were going to throw up.
The lights making your head pound even worse.
You soon realized you had gotten yet another migraine.
You got them more often than you ever did before and you felt miserable every time they came.
You told your boss what was going on and got the okay to head home.
You put your sunglasses on and tried to avoid the light that was emanating from the sun.
Why did it have to be such a sunny day?
You parked your car and walked up to your apartment, slamming the door shut in anger, you instantly regret it as the noise makes your head pound even more.
“Damn it.” You mumbled as you kicked off your shoes and walked into the bedroom, your boyfriend Shōta sitting up from the noise.
“YN? What are you doing home?” He asked as he looked at you curiously.
“Sho baby, can you quiet down please. My head is killing me.”
“Another migraine?” He asked as he looked at you, the worry written all over his face.
You nodded as you pulled the covers back and got into bed.
He didn’t say anything else, just pulled you close to him, your head laying on his chest.
You ended up spending the rest of the day in bed napping with your boyfriend, who didn’t complain once in the slightest.
If he had it his way you would never leave your bed, and today that’s exactly what you needed.

Dad Letter 110820
8 November, 2020
Dear Dad--
Nothing like a nice boring week, free from noisy public tumult, eh? So, just to get it out of the way, with regard to the general election that just took place, and all its implications, I will just say this: That was sure an election that just happened! Perhaps now we can all be a little quieter in our thoughts, with our heads less “full of fuck” than usual. If you’re disappointed in the results, as I expect you may be, I am sorry. I’ve received the furry end of that same lollipop more than once; I can empathize.
My back is still excitingly painful! I broke down on Friday and called my doctor’s office to make an appointment. They were able to schedule me for a visit tomorrow, Monday morning, at 8:30! So I’ll go in, tell him how I threw my back out, and how this weird, left-sided sciatic pain remained behind after the back problems went away. The sciatic pain, while not excruciating, is propelling me ever more quickly into “This is bullshit” territory. I’m not worried about the doctor visit, as I expect the worst thing that’ll happen is, he’ll say, “Yep! You got sciatica! Do the following exercises every day and act like you GOT A PAIR, MAGGOT!” My only other concern is that he’s going to have to grab my ass in order to complete his diagnosis. It has nothing to do with what kind of person the doctor is; it has everything to do with granting access to my demilitarized zone to a relative stranger for non-recreational purposes.
I assume the doctor will prescribe a few things (exercise, stretching) to help repair whatever’s fucking up in my back, and if I’m lucky, perhaps something for pain. I don’t go seeking pain medication, but when a doctor prescribes it, and I’m in a good deal of non-permanent pain, taking hydrodocone is at least in the same neighborhood as “fun.” I just hope the sciatica isn’t a symptom of any kind of malfeasance in my spine. I know it’s not one of those root cause things, it’s a symptom of something else kinda thing, like a bulging disc. I’m not too sure what a bulging disc is, and I’m not keen to find out.
Also, this past week, I tried rhubarb for the first time, or at least, for the first time that I can remember. Stacy said Mom once made us a rhubarb dish of some sort, but I don’t remember that at all. Obviously I approach rhubarb with caution and mistrust, because it so closely resembles celery, which is my mortal enemy. No one wants celery in his baked desserts; that’s just nasty. But my friends advised me that it had a unique tart flavor, and that if it’s cooked properly, it won’t have a stringy texture, like that of celery. They were right! It’s kind of like big chunks of non-stringy, strawberry-flavored celery. (It was a strawberry rhubarb pie.)
The writing of my screenplay progresses with alacrity and aplomb! As of now, I’ve written the first 50 or so pages, and I’ve written the last 12 or so pages. Those were the easy, fun bits to write, because the beginning is automatically interesting, just learning about the characters and where they’re going to go, and what the story is about. The end is easy and fun to write, because it’s the climax. Now I have to write about 40 pages to go in the middle. That part is going to be quite difficult, because that middle part, the second act, tends to be the slow, depressing part. That’s when the characters are all brought to their emotional low point, before the third act/conclusion, begins. So, in other words, this part will be tough to keep interesting, but scary, but not sad, but emotionally perilous...it’s a lot of balls to keep in the air, and there are a lot more pitfalls than usual, where the quality of the story might drop, if I’m not extra careful. I have to make sure no one falls asleep while watching this part.
We had our first snow, and it was impressive! And we weren’t expecting it! But we got a few flakes early in the day (I think) Tuesday, but nothing I could photograph, just a few flakes in the air. When I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, however, it was snowing vigorously outside. I still get the biggest kick out of that. It kept snowing after the sun came up, and we ended up with about 4 inches. Not bad, considering Bangor doesn’t usually get its first inch of snow until late November.
Bullet items!!
- Apropos of nothing, I just found out that owls sleep on their stomachs, and it’s the cutest thing you ever saw.
- Three people have courageously volunteered to read the first half of the script that I’ve completed. I’m fairly confident that it isn’t terrible.
- They made a new arts and crafts material that you add water to, and it becomes clay that you can sculpt, but when it dries, it becomes concrete. It’s called SculptCrete. I don’t know what I’d do with it, but I want some.
- I just learned what “tactile, kinesthetic learning” means.
With that, and my apologies, I think I’m going to draw this letter to a close. The past week has been, frankly, exhausting! I’m going to spend one more day grunting in pain, and then tomorrow, my trustworthy doctor will give me a medical grade punch in the butt, or whatever they do, and relax those muscles. Perhaps I’ll be given a muscle relaxer? I don’t know exactly what that does, but it sounds like the left side of my ass might appreciate some.
I’ll let you know how it goes! All my love to you both!

Annual New Year’s Meme
It’s the thing! This is usually the first one that I do, but I did a new thing this year, because I read a lot of quality fic and wanted to talk about them, so the Top 25 fics of 2017 came first, and the year-in-books will probably be published before this one too, but whatever. It’s all fine.
1. What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before? Had really awful rashes all over my body because I developed an allergy to something that I STILL HAVEN’T IDENTIFIED. Um. Other things? Probably? Oh, hey, I composted! I went to the dentist all by myself! 2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don’t know if I actually made any resolutions last year. The standard lose weight, etc. etc. I haven’t started smoking again, so that’s really good!
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Eh. People that I went to high school with. Good friend from HS that I haven’t talked to in years had a baby girl. Manager also had a little girl. 4. Did anyone close to you die? My grandfather passed away in August. 5. What countries did you visit? Alternatively, what is your favorite place that you did go this year? Nick and I ended up getting a beach house with his mom, brother, and a few of his brother’s friends this year in North Carolina, and it was pretty great. I spent the week reading in either the pool, on the beach, or in the hot tub, so that was pretty great all around. We also went to Richmond Virginia for a Maggie Stiefvater thing and it was just all around a really great trip.
6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017? An apartment with just me, Nick, and the cats. 500% I’ve become more ambivalent towards everything here, but that doesn’t mean that it still doesn’t grate that nobody helps us clean around here. That getting them to take out the trash or even know what day the trash and recycling goes to the curb is like pulling teeth. But I’m stressing over it less, which has been really nice.
I’d also really love to have a better job. More stable job. Big girl job, whatever. I think that I’ve decided on biting the bullet and enrolling at CState, but I’m getting to the point where I need to be at a job where I have benefits. Insurance. I went shopping for Obamacare this year and was just. Really frustrated. Even the ‘good’ plans that were near the end of my budget were out of the question because none of the doctors that I need to go to (gastroenterologist, dermatologist, OBGYN) accept the plans. Also, as much as serving money is good, I’m getting too old for it. I’m tired, and I basically already have arthritis at 28.
Also. I would really like a stupid ring. I’ve never been the type of girl to get excited about that type of thing, but by god, it’s about time.
7. What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? Things. Stuff. My grandfather’s funeral. The day I first started itching uncontrollably. The subsequent weeks of misery. I don’t know. 8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? ...Yeah, I’m really glad that I read a lot of books. And that I didn’t kill any housemates.
9. What was your biggest failure? Eh. Not killing the president? 10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Stomach, blood, and nerve pain have been mostly good this year. The bleeding has become manageable and scarce, the heartburn is here and there, and I haven’t had sciatica issues since last year. I’ve had more than the usual amount of colds this year, which I’m chalking up to the air in this house being god awful and us possibly having a black mold problem. The allergy thing is worse. Being constantly itchy for two months is FUCKING AWFUL. It’s been more manageable the last couple days so I’m hoping to god that the worst of it is over. 11. What was the best thing you bought? I went to the dentist all by myself and got fillings all by myself and they may have cost $800 but I fucking did it. Also, I didn’t buy it but I got a library membership (again) and it’s the best thing that’s happened to me in ages. 12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Nick. He just finished up his last semester at school and is just generally pretty upstanding. I’m fond of him. 13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed? Josh. Roommate number four. I’m still kind of sick of the lack of cleaning, but I don’t want to kill them anymore. Seth and Angela I’ve actually been repairing my relationship with. But fuck Josh. Also, fuck my mom.
14. Where did most of your money go? Bills. Car payment. Groceries. Dentist. Doctor. Cat food. Also, that vacation to the beach house sapped the hell out of my savings. 15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Still excited about Nick’s stupid face. Really liked the new Star Wars movie, and have been floating on a high of Reylo for a couple days now. Good games, good books, got my teeth fixed. Beach house was awesome and didn’t go as badly as I thought it would.
I also. Might have thought up an idea for a book. That I’m thinking about actually writing. 16. What song will always remind you of 2017? Is This Love. Holiest. Saturn. Undiscovered First. Kings. The new Halsey album. Personal Yeezus. Battle Royale. Look What You Made Me Do. 17. Compared to this time last year, are you: i. happier or sadder? Generally, I’m just pretty content. Pretty sure I am happier, yeah. ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter. I stopped exercising and caring about food and now I need to fix it. iii. richer or poorer? Both? My savings are gone, and I have a credit card, which is a whole new level of oh god oh god. 18. What do you wish you’d done more of? Write? I did much better than last year, but still nothing like years past. I also wish that I’d exercised more. Not necessarily because of losing weight, but because I actually kind of like it?
19. What do you wish you’d done less of? I have been a lot less angry this year. Honestly, I feel like this year I’ve been channeling someone who is on a constant high of a xanax because I’ve basically just been pretty chill and not stressed out. I do wish that I’d done less moping around, ranting about roommates, and just generally wasting time. 20. How will you be spending Christmas? Presumably we’ll be at Nick’s mom’s to open presents in the morning and his grandparent’s in the afternoon. I’m looking forward to Christmas Eve, which we get to ourselves this year. 21. How will you be spending New Year’s Eve? Probably at Nick’s mom’s house. Hopefully there will be less beer pong this year. And maybe not a five year old for me to babysit while I’m trashed. 22. Did you fall in love in 2017? Old news. 23. Best month for you this year? March or April, I think. Those were good months. 24. What was your favorite TV program? Of just 2017? I didn’t actually watch a whole bunch of television this year. I finished watching Stargate Atlantis in January, Legion, Taboo, and American Gods were all pretty great. Westworld, the latest season of Game of Thrones, Stranger Things 2, new season of Dark Matter, two new seasons of Voltron, The Punisher... Okay, maybe I watched more tv than I thought I did. I really liked Legion, The Punisher, American Gods, and the new Game of Thrones. 25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year? Eh. I don’t think I have the energy to hate anyone. Besides Trump. Fuck Trump. 26. What was the best book you read? Less by Andrew Sean Greer and Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. Also, Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. Last year I read a lot of books that will be favorites forever. This year I read less of those, but introduced myself to a lot of things out of my element. 27. What was your greatest musical discovery? Probably either Feist or Glass Animals. I was always aware of the latter, but I never really loved them until this year. 28. What did you want and got? I got my teeth fixed. And honestly I’ve been having a lot less headaches since then, which is really nice. I got nice books and games and if I’m right about the package under the tree, the nice green coat that I wanted.
29. What did you want but didn’t get? Hah. A ring. It’s not necessarily an active want, but we’ve talked about it enough that I actually do kind of want it and just. I think I want kids? More on this new development next year. 30. What was your favorite film of this year? Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Coco. Wonder Woman. Mona Lisa Smile. Logan. I’d say the Shape of Water but I’m still really fucking upset that he ate the cat. 31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? 28 went almost the same as it did last year. Lunch with Nick at the Lantern again, stopped by a Game Stop so I could buy myself a present from my dad, watched the new Star Wars movie, and I played ABZU, which was wonderful. Birthday shenanigans with friends got pushed back til Sunday, when we saw the Shape of Water and got dinner at The Pub again with usual folks, minus Seth, who is a butt. 32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Insurance. A better job. A better president. I’m not going to say a ring again, but I’ll think it pretty hard. 33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017? For the spring and summer I wore a lot of cute skirts and dresses, but the last couple months it’s been the softest fabric I can find to avoid itching. 34. What kept you sane? Reading was really, really great this year. - leaving this answer 35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Nobody. Fuck celebrities. Okay, no, I’m lying. Gal Gadot is a babe and I want her to smooch my forehead gently. 36. What political issue stirred you the most? FUCK DONALD TRUMP IN THE EAR 20167. —– Ayyyyy, this was my response from last year, and apparently also the year before! Hello past me, don’t worry, sweetie, it’s still getting worse. 37. Who did you miss? My grandfather. Allie. 38. Who was the best new person you met? I have a new coworker. Okay, I have several but one of them is named Olivia and I’m really quite fond of her. She gives good hugs and brought me Starbucks today.
39. Talk about a new friend that you made this year: *Sherlock voice* I don’t have friends.
40. Post a picture from the beginning of the year:
I took this picture in early February entirely because I remembered that I had a lipstick that matched this cardigan.
41. Post a picture from the end of the year:
This was taken a couple weeks ago. I cut my hair, got bangs, and went black with green. My managers are convinced that I killed someone and needed a new alias because it’s such a different look.
42. A memorable meal discovered this year? Thai Coconut Curry Butternut Squash Soup. Nick loves it. I also ended up getting the best pad thai in existence from a hole-in-the-wall place in Richmond a block from our hotel.
43. What was your favorite memory this year? Honestly probably those few days that me and Nick were in Richmond. It was just the two of us so the drive was great, we spent it talking and listening to podcasts, discovering the town was great, the Maggie thing was great, the food was great, even the hotel room was great.
44. What are you excited for next year? Mostly I’m excited to see where my life is going. I’m going to have to make a decision about college next year, and get a new job regardless of that. I want to actually bring up marriage as a thing that should be done sooner rather than later to see if it’s actually in the cards. I’m looking forward to good books, a new apartment, and I want to talk Nick into taking a trip just the two of us, even if its just a weekend in Hocking Hills or a day trip to Niagara Falls.
45. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017: Start planning for long term after the age of 25. You aren’t going to be young and healthy forever. 46. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: But if you stand for nothing you'll fall for it all We got all we need, got no more You're never fully dressed without a smile And if you stand for somethin' you can have it all 'Cause if is real your love will never die You're never fully dressed without a smile
First Fandom of 2017: It seems to have been a whole lot of Stargate with a little Yuri on Ice Favorite Main Character of 2017: Rey. Keith. Corvo Attano. Aloy. Grantaire. Favorite Villain of 2017: Kylo Ren. The Darkling. Delilah. Lotor. Loki. Favorite M/F Couple of 2017: 100% Reylo. Alina/Darkling scratched the same itch too. Favorite F/F Couple of 2017: Supercorp and Jaspis. Favorite M/M Couple of 2017: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard. Corvo/The Outsider. Fandom That You Never Expected To Get Into: Mm. Horizon Zero Dawn? It’s a small fandom, but I wrote something for it so I feel like it counts. Also, Les Mis. I’d never thought of it in the context of fandom before. Fandom That Made An Unexpected Comeback: I read a lot of Harry Potter this year. I also had a brief detour back into Thorki and FMA. Fandom That Inspired The Most Crack: No idea. Last Fandom of 2017: Star Wars. I’ve been reading a lot of actual books the last few months but The Last Jedi got me hooked. Favorite Fandom of 2017: I really enjoyed the Harry Potter again. And I found a lot of really cool Yuri on Ice and Les Mis fics.

There is so much to say and I want to remember as much as I possibly can.
Tuesday, March 24
Tim and I both worked from home for the day. My sciatica had flared up pretty badly, but I really, really wanted to try to run. I prepped myself that I may not be able to, but Tim and I got dressed and from the first step, I knew I was going to get my 2 miles in. My back was uncomfortable, but bearable! Tim and I ran 2.32 miles and I smiled the entire time. I am so happy I got in that last run with Tim before baby!
The rest of the day went surprisingly fast. I had most of my work stuff wrapped up anyway, and Jenny picked up Miles after our last walk. Tim and I ate dinner and then we packed the car and headed to the hospital. It was so weird to keep thinking ‘this is the last X before baby.’
Our appointment was at 6, and we got checked in very quickly. By 7 p.m., they started me on cervidil, as I was still only 1 cm. dilated. Cervidil takes about 12 hours to work, so Tim and I settled in to try and get some sleep. Unfortunately, cervidil almost immediately caused me to have some seriously painful contractions.
I eventually caved and asked the nurse what to do – I thought I may be in labor, to be honest. The contractions were that strong. Unfortunately, she said it’s a normal side effect. They gave me a baby-safe Ambien, which helped me sleep a little – and also made me very, very goofy.
There was some type of pain medication that they said they could give me only twice during labor so I was apprehensive about getting it so soon, but I eventually (maybe around 2 a.m.) asked for it. It worked so well, and I was able to get some sleep.
Wednesday, March 25
In the morning, they checked to see how the Cervidil worked and turns out I was still only 1 centimeter dilated. I could have cried.
The next option was to try the balloon method, in which they basically take a very long instrument, shove it up you and then expand it like a balloon. This was INCREDIBLY painful, the pain meds had worn off, so I was dealing with this very intrusive measure, in addition to strong contractions, as the pain meds had worn off. I cried a lot. And then I kept apologizing for crying.
This could take up to 12 hours, but fortunately for me, it only took about 4. However, I had to ask for the second dose of pain meds for the contractions. It feels like the worst period cramp you can imagine with terrible pressure in your back. The nurse told me to just go for it, as I was struggling.
I should mention that we had hired a doula, but due to coronavirus, only Tim was allowed in. She had given Tim a crash course in doula-ing, and he did such a good job of helping me through contractions. He would put pressure on my hips to help relieve it and also try to distract me by talking about running. He is just a good partner.
Anyway, once the balloon came out (Fun fact! You pull it out like a tampon! BUT WOW IT IS MUCH LARGER THAN A TAMPON.), they checked me again and I was only 3-4 cm. Sigh. However, I was still having strong contractions, so they moved me from pre-labor to Labor and Delivery, which was great because we had a much bigger room! Everyone thought the baby would be coming so soon!
But that didn’t happen. Around 3 p.m., my contractions were so painful, I was crying again. I was trying to put off the epidural for as long as I could, but my angel of a nurse told me to go for it. The epidural did hurt, and it was very hard to stay still because of the contractions but after about 30 minutes, I finally, finally had some relief. But it also made me vomit profusely – so any calories I had down were gone.
However, that meant I couldn’t eat anymore or move my legs. BUT, worth it because I wasn’t crying in pain. Everyone thought the baby would come either later Wednesday or early Thursday. I am not sure what we even did to pass the time. I know we didn’t read or watch television. I guess we just talked? We had nurses and midwives coming to check me. You’re supposed to progress about 1 cm. every two hours and I was barely making it. Also, since you can’t walk, they empty your bladder FOR YOU! I was slowly losing any concept of modesty.
Tim and I eventually fell asleep and around 11 p.m., my water broke. It was the CRAZIEST thing! I felt this POP! And suddenly, water was gushing out of me. It was such a strange feeling. We really had hoped that would lead to labor, but I was still only about 6 cm. dilated. Once they cleaned me up, we went back to sleep – hopeful real labor would start soon!
Thursday, March 26
I was only allowed to have Italian ice – so I ate six orange ones over the course of the epidural! There was so, so much downtime, and I really thought I would be bored. But I wasn’t! I don’t even know what we did, but the time passed.
Around 9, they came in and checked me and I was 10 cm. dilated! FINALLY! They told me I would start pushing soon. That happened around 10, and I naively thought baby would be coming soon. So many people told me I would have an easy and fast delivery because I was so active. However, that was not the case for me, and the epidural really didn’t help with vaginal pain, it was just blocking contraction pain. And the vaginal pain HURT.
Every time I could feel the pressure of a contraction coming, Tim would hold one leg and the nurse would hold the other, and I would have to hold my thighs with my arms out like chicken wings, and then push as hard as I could as they counted until 10. Pushing was so, so, so hard. I was so tired from being in labor for so long and also, I had not really eaten anything in hours.
Tim was counting until 10 for me (I’d do it 3-4 times per contraction) and he kept yelling chicken wing in lieu of a number to remind me. After 90 minutes, more nurses and midwives came filtering in, so I knew I finally had to be close. (And yes! I did poop myself. I was MORTIFIED, but they told me it was a good sign – it meant that I was using the right muscles.
ANYWAY. The final pushing took so, so, so long. The pressure was so painful, I was crying at the end, swearing that I could not possibly do it anymore. In fact, I looked up at the mirror on the ceiling (WTF!) and could see his head stuck coming out. Little nugget has such a HUGE head, it was essentially stuck in my birth canal. It hurt so bad. I cannot even think of words to describe that pressure. It was the most excruciating thing I have ever felt.
People keep asking if it was like running a marathon. No. It was like running 12 marathons back-to-back at your 5K pace.
Finally, at 12:01 p.m., Keegan made his way into the world. Unfortunately, they had to whisk him out immediately, which was so, so, so, so, so scary. He wasn’t making noise and his hands were blue. Fortunately, he was just stuck in the birth canal a little too long, and they were able to get him to cry and they finally laid him on my chest. All the cliches are true - as soon as I met him, I felt this love that I never even knew existed. I never felt particularly attached to him in the womb, but now that he is out, it's a whole other world.
I still had to deliver the placenta, and they had to stitch me up - somehow, I only needed one stitch! The midwife said that the price I paid in delivery will most likely lead to an easier recovery. I didn't tear as much because the muscles had time to stretch. Anyway, Keegan is 21 inches long and weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces.
This is already so long, so I will be back to talk about the rest of the hospital stay, breastfeeding, coming home and adjusting to our new normal.

Moving Event - The Saga
Boy, do I have some stories for you! They include leaving a crappy apartment, not having the moving truck we reserved, finally moving, and then having to call the Fire Department this morning! I LIVE THE EXCITING LIFE!
On Friday afternoon, we finally got the keys to our new place! After 5 years living in a place that was supposed to have central AC, which did not work correctly or at all the entire time we lived there - we were THRILLED to feel that cool air again. We also move the cat, though she was NOT a fan and found some very entertaining and unexpected hiding places.
Fun laundry list of the stupid: the AC is the incorrect unit for the location, it was initially installed backwards, and it was a fire hazard the whole time. After a close call with a fire last year, we were not able to turn it on at all. They never actually replaced it even after several certified letters, legal threats, etc. Our washing machine broke this past October, and they’ve never fixed it. I’ve been hauling our laundry to a friend’s place all year. Our shower also never drained properly, and no amount of work on our part or maintenance helped. The plumbing had never been updated, and basically I hadn’t taken a shower at home that didn’t also double as a bath in 5 years. That, plus some general crap... we were done, AND the state just sued the complex/management company for several counts of consumer fraud because apparently we had it pretty good. Some people were forced to go without heat and water with no compensation or option to move - super illegal. Soooo WE ARE FINALLY OUT. Just have to do a quick trip tomorrow, and we give them the keys.
Saturday (yesterday) we did the big move enlisting like 7 friends to come help. I had reserved a UHaul the week before, and we were getting started at noon. (My friends do not do mornings.) Before the truck, we had stayed overnight in the new place and the Internet guy was supposed to come at 8:30. I thought we’d have plenty of time before the move... LOL There ended up being a problem with the signal, a cut wire, a wrong box. You name it. So the guy was here for 3 hours and had to recruit more help. A third guy was also coming in the afternoon to re-string stuff, so all of a sudden we needed a person to be around all afternoon. Cue BFF’s husband who has sciatica and cannot help move BUT can sit and play on his phone in the AC. A godsend. Once we got him settled, I went back to meet friends at the old place and the BFF took the husband to pick up the truck.
As I got friends started on loading some stuff into cars while we waited for the truck, I got a phone call from the BFF. Turns out my guaranteed moving truck was not there! And they didn’t have any other trucks! The BFF wins all the awards and sprung into action calling every UHaul, Home Depot, and Penske truck place in the area over the next few hours. We were able to do almost all the boxes in everyone’s cars for a trip and chilled out while waiting to find a truck. Penske won out, and we had a truck by 3! Two truck trips later, we ended with a mountain of pizza and exhaustion. WORTH IT! The kitty even came out to explore all last night and this morning!
So today we slept in a bit and then started trying to set stuff up (at least the big furniture and the kitchen). This all went well, except for when we had to move the stove. We have a gas stove in the new place, which the cat had managed to wedge herself behind yesterday. So after everyone left, we pulled it out a little bit to coax her out (and make sure she wasn’t stuck back there). Today, I went to move it back. After several minutes, I was unpacking some canned food and the Husband exclaims “I SMELL GAS!” It was definitely coming from the stove, and the knobs were all turned to OFF. Big issue. A frantic exit, call to 911, and call to emergency maintenance later... we are the new neighbors who brought in 4 fire trucks on Day 2. Got to meet a lot of neighbors and the head of maintenance, though! A hose had gotten loose, and everything ended up being fine. But it was dramatic.
The cat is behind the washing machine right now because she did not enjoy the Emergency Crews/Firemen showing up. We finally have the big furniture in place, and hopefully we’re done with unplanned crazy! The new place is GORGEOUS, though, so everything is good in the end. I’m cool and happy, and nothing actually blew up. :)

I have chronic issues that lately have seen me in the ER at least once a month. To give some background, I live in central Lexington, within around a mile of three major hospitals, and have been to all three (and Clark county hospital when I had to leave work early for it) since January. Late afternoon or early evening every time, open beds abound (3/4 times I was wheeled through to the waiting room, or was able to look in at the beds as I was taken to mine.
Baptist Hospital: was wheeled to triage with pain at 8/10. Taken to waiting room and sat for around 5 mins before taken to bed. Spent 2 hours total in ER, sent home with incorrect diagnosis of stomach upset and told to check in with my doctor. Overall care experience was standard; I was treated for the immediate symptoms and my concerns were laughed off. Since its a vagina issue, that par for the course.
Albert B Chandler ER/UK Healthcare: wheeled immediately to bed, triage done in ER with pain at 8/10. Gave urine sample and immediately after was taken for x rays. Pap smear performed within about 10 minutes, after which I was given painkillers and taken to a low-risk patient area where I could wait for the meds to kick in. Discharged within 3 hours, with pain at 7/10 And notice that a UK OB/GYN would call me to make an appointment within the week. (They did not.) Overall care experience was wonderful. Honestly I was in shock that I was taken seriously in that moment, probably because my care team were all young women around my age, one of which told me she had endometriosis and got issues like mine before she got proper medication. Care was quick and well-done. After all this mess (see below) this is just where I go now.
St. Joseph: Taken to ER because the urgent care I went to was about to close. At this point, I have medication for the chronic issue, but was concerned because I kept falling. This urgent care has x-ray machines, and I wanted to see if it was a sciatica flare up before I went to the ER saying my condition had gotten worse. Pain at 5/10; if it werent for the falling, I wouldn't have gone in at all. They called me a taxi. I waited for an hour before giving up and calling 911. If I wasn't going to get what I needed there, I would just go elsewhere. On arrival, was wheeled to the waiting room. Pain was steadily getting worse and by the time I was taken to triage an hour later, I was at a solid 9/10. I was groaning from the pain and could hardly move my legs enough to shift my weight a bit. Nurses had forgotten I was even there. Was then wheeled back to a bed where I waited another 30 minutes before anyone came back to treat me. Gave a urine sample. 20 minutes later was taken for x-rays. Told it was just a sciatica flare up and was told to go home. Remember that I live very close to this hospital, but my pain had only reduced to maybe a 7/10, it was now late evening, and my options were to walk (no) or take a bus token (my apartment is on a separate line, and the token would only cover the ride to central dispatch downtown. My roommate had given me a ride and I only had my ID and insurance cards, no money.) Was able to get ride from a friend back to my apartment. Overall care experience was terrible, between being forgotten and being told that if I didn't want to ride the bus in a still-unfamiliar city at night I could just walk while still in pain even after medication, this was honestly the worst experience I've had.
Clark County Regional: The ER nurses still know me from when I worked at Amazon, since if I had these issues then I would drive myself the mile to the er. Walked into er, taken to triage within 10 minutes, pain at 7/10. I'd fallen in a bathroom stall while at work and had passed out for around 5-10 minutes. Since this problem was new, they wanted to rule out that it wasn't viral. Spent maybe an hour there before given painkillers to get me through the afternoon and told to follow up with my doctor. And THEN two days later I went to st Joseph. Overall care experience was fairly poor, I know for a fact they think I'm a hypochondriac.
My advice? If you want proper care quick and to be taken seriously? Go to a university hospital. Get a pcp who works through the university. In a lot of specialists fields, there are student-run clinics where the cost is greatly reduced, by up to 75% in some cases. Get a dentist at a clinic like that and get in as a patient for their Boards. I'm getting paid to have a girl I met on Facebook fill some cavities and redo an older filling that was shoddily done. My insurance covers dental work anyway, and I'm getting like $50 on top of it. Just, in my pocket.
The louder you are in the ER waiting room, the more the staff is convinced that you are not having an emergency.
I mean it. You’re getting the attention you think you want, all eyes on you. Except ours. “Isn’t there anything you can do?” Your fellow waiters ask us, concerned. Behind the triage window, you can’t hear our teeth grinding. You’re in pain, i understand that. This might even be the worst pain you’ve ever felt. But you’re probably not dying.
Dying isn’t loud. A patient having a heart attack does not scream and thrash and gasp for air. It’s a whisper, a tightness, with slow flexing fingers. A stroke happens in a fraction of an instant, and never makes any sound. More whispers, halves of sentences and muscles that don’t quite match up anymore, a puppet with a few of the strings cut. Alarmed and wandering eyes, maybe, but never yelling. Or the more common killers, infections that shut down organs or the pipes of blood that sever. Cardiac or respiratory failure. If a person can talk they are, in fact, breathing just fine.
Remember this, the next time you come to an emergency department. Remember this when you’re sitting in the waiting room, while a sleepy-looking person in a wheelchair is whisked away without a word.

thomas jane as allen williams
marlo thomas as gran williams
douglas booth as kyle ross
george finn as chad
lina esco as janice
tanz watson as lloyd
genres:
teen
romance
comedy
drama
thoughts:
the soundtrack for this film was unmatched, the writing might have been ass but the soundtrack made up for it.
chad was kinda hot, not gonna lie, total douche but c’mon.
what’s funny is that i don’t hear anybody call lola “lol” once in this entire film
i don’t care, the bag is fucking ugly
no because why is emily’s entire plot my sophomore year??
it’s okay, miley… FUCK CHAD!!
i just know she felt satisfied after punching that marker in
“what’s a pornstar?”
no because this is how me and my dad drive to school
“you can’t always get what you want”
imagine if demi moore just *crashed*
i remember watching this for the first time my freshman year and seeing douglas booth in the gif i had seen in the finn wolfhard fanfic i had read and being so shocked
why the fuck was chad a little pressed after seeing lola and kyle together like he wasn’t the reason they broke up?
why do they always go to paris in tv and film?? like how funded is your school?
based off style, chad would be my type. flannel, t-shirt, jeans
“stop it, shove it up your ass.” me as an older sister. i would bully the fuck outta my little brother until he grew taller than me.
“i won’t let you go, now you know, i’ve been crazy for you all this time, i kept you close, always hoping, with my heart on fire!!” BANGER
the industrial revolution unit in history is so fucking boring
douglas booth really went from no shampoo to motley crue
men just suck, period.
no because the douglas booth and miley cyrus waving at each other from across the train was so cringy but the montage is cute, i guess
i remember watching this and wanting to have a diary just like lola’s and now that diary never got filled up and is stuck under one of my drawers
“i hate my life” me too, jackson. me too.
jackson looked kinda familiar so i searched him up and apparently it’s brady from in real life… umm what???
6’2-6’4 is the perfect height, the size kink in me really comes out
“the big, big bang, the reason i’m alive”
unpopular opinion (maybe??): chad is hotter than kyle
*slams locker*
lola’s grandma >> lola’s mom
“do i have a sign on my head that says ‘cheat on me’?”
of fucking course, douglas booth is the emo boy. precursor to nikki sixx me thinks.
not kyle saying defriended instead of unfriended
“this is for bad girls with bad grades and bad futures! this is garbage! garbage!!”
this shot in the airplane was not doing douglas booth justice, i can see his yellow ass teeth
“discriminate? yo, are you kidding me? don’t say that to me, bro.”
the little french girl, joan, looks a little like young beth in the queen’s gambit.
i just don’t care about the last 30 mins that much
i would get fucking lost in paris with my friends, i would get absolutely lost
“i only smoke because of my sciatica”
lloyd really taking one for the team so kyle and lola can fuck
chad is really out here 7th wheeling
not the echo in “sex with kyle”
lola and ashley becoming friends is such a vibe for me because i love ashley
the other song by no shampoo is also a fucking banger
you know what’s not a vibe? chad’s vest
yes, heart on fire reprise!!
not someone in the crowd screaming “i love you” like they’re fucking one direction
I WON’T LET YOU GO, NOW YOU KNOW, I’VE BEEN CRAZY FOR YOU ALL THIS TIME, I’VE KEPT YOU CLOSE, ALWAYS HOPING, WITH YOUR HEART ON FIRE!!
chad and ashley, i think yes
i hate that they all get boyfriends in the end, can’t relate
rating: 3/5 stars

Yes. Not having health insurance can kill you.
As a practicing physician for going on nearly 50 years now, I often feel like that auto insurance company that says “We know a thing or two because we have seen a thing or two.”
After years of dealing with people who are insured, people who are uninsured and health insurance companies, I know that having real, comprehensive coverage can mean the difference between life and death.
A few years back, one Republican Congressman – speaking about the impact of GOP legislation that would have drastically cut Medicaid – defended the plan he supported by stating, “Nobody dies because they don’t have access to health care.”
That false assurance has been widely debunked by people who actually report on health reform or work in healthcare. But that hasn’t stopped critics of the Affordable Care Act from continuing to promise “Relax. We’ve got this” … all the while promising to dismantle a law that greatly expanded access to affordable health coverage for millions.
Pre-existing conditions are a matter of life and death …
The current ongoing line of false reassurances has to do with health coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. Many Republicans are on the campaign trail right now claiming that they’ve been protecting folks with pre-existing conditions all along. And these would be the same people who voted for the American Health Care Act in 2017. (The AHCA, passed by the GOP House last year, would have stripped health insurance away from people with pre-existing conditions, had its passage in the Senate not been derailed by late Sen. John McCain.
The folks who wrote the ACA bent over backward to ensure that protections for millions would be a central plank of the law:
Under current law, health insurance companies can’t refuse to cover you or charge you more just because you have a “pre-existing condition” — that is, a health problem you had before the date that new health coverage starts.
… for millions of Americans.
In 2017, about half of non-elderly Americans – or about 130 million non-elderly people – had pre-existing conditions in the U.S., according to a brief from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Nationally, the most common pre-existing conditions were high blood pressure (44 million people), behavioral health disorders (45 million people), high cholesterol (44 million people), asthma and chronic lung disease (34 million people), and osteoarthritis and other joint disorders (34 million people). – U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
More and more people are beginning to understand that. Of American voters, 66 percent of registered voters said that continued protections for people with pre-existing conditions was either the “single most important factor” (14 percent) or a “very important factor” (52 percent) in their vote for a candidate. (Which explains why the GOP is suddenly claiming they love these protections.)
Who are these people with pre-existing conditions?
If you don’t have a pre-existing condition – or you can’t think of someone right off the top of your head who might have one – let me offer a glance at some of your fellow Americans whose stories as patients have crossed my desk over my years as a Physician Executive.
Patient #1: Atrial fibrillation
This middle-aged female was sent to the Emergency Department by her cardiologist because of symptoms that included a five-day history of palpitations (feeling heart beat in chest), dizziness (imbalance) and headache. The EKG showed Atrial Fibrillation with a rapid ventricular response. She also had an elevated blood pressure that was persistent. The admitting diagnosis was new onset atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response.
Result: This patient now has developed the dreaded “pre-existing condition.”
Patient #2: Herniated disc
This 30-something male patient had a 12-year history of a herniated disc. He presented to the Emergency Department with back pain and sciatica going into his left leg, associated with difficulty walking. A CT scan indicated a disc protrusion in the lower back.
This patient had a medical history of a weightlifting injury and known herniated disc. On top of that he presented with a two-week history of gradually increasing low back pain with sciatica. The pain was impacting his ability to walk. An MRI revealed the thecal sac at the nerve root was indented. In layman’s terms, that means the arthritis of the spine was putting pressure on the nerve.
Result: Patient #2 had a pre-existing condition and could be denied health coverage.
Patient #3: High blood pressure, heart disease, chronic lung disease
A middle-aged female patient came to the Emergency Department complaining of a pounding headache located mostly in her forehead, associated with lightheadedness. The patient had a medical history of high blood pressure and heart disease but had not taken her blood pressure medication due to financial reasons for at least two months.
The patient also had a history of mild atrial fibrillation and chronic lung disease, but the patient reported that she had not had treatment for those. The patient also reported swelling in her lower extremities for which she took an over-the-counter medication.
Result: This is not an unusual scenario in today’s healthcare landscape. And this patient could be denied coverage for these pre-existing conditions.
Short-term plans
While Republicans did their level best in 2017 to pass a law that would erode protections for folks like the three examples above (and many more), President Donald Trump has been providing his own false assurances about about health coverage. His promise: that Americans can relax, because he’s coming to the rescue with more (and CHEAPER) short-term health insurance alternatives.
Short-term coverage is not an ideal solution for people with pre-existing conditions. The plans:
aren’t required to cover ACA’s essential health benefits;
may deny you coverage if you have pre-existing conditions;
may require pre-certification for many medical services;
will likely screen applicants through medical underwriting;
impose annual and lifetime benefit maximums.
In October, new federal rules expanded the duration of short-term health plans in many states. But other states have taken a “buyer beware” approach and a handful of states – including New York and New Jersey – completely ban the sale of short-term health plans.
Lack of insurance can kill you.
So let’s go back to the original point of this column: that pre-existing conditions are a matter of life and death. They most definitely are – because having a pre-existing condition in the ‘good old days‘ before Obamacare meant that getting comprehensive health coverage on the individual market was difficult or near impossible.
But can being uninsured really kill you? From my literature review, it’s clear that you are from 3 to 29 percent more likely to die if you don’t have health insurance than those who do!
Here’s some of research:
In 2002, the Institute of Medicine estimated that the “death rate of the uninsured is 25 percent higher than for otherwise similar people who have health insurance. According to the study, 18,000 excess deaths occurred each year because 40 million Americans lacked insurance.”
In January 2008, the Urban Institute updated that study. “Subsequent research has continued to confirm the link between insurance and mortality risk. The true number of deaths resulting from un-insurance will be “significant.”
A 2009 rebuttal study by the Health Research and Education Trust found that “when adjusted for health status and other factors, the risk of subsequent mortality is no different for people who lack insurance than for those who are covered by employer-sponsored plans.” But the study also had a second conclusion: “With health status excluded, the uninsured have a 10 percent higher mortality rate than similar insured persons.”
The Harvard researchers compared 2001- 2005 death rates in Massachusetts to the four-year period after a new healthcare law was enacted and found that “mortality rate decreased by 3 percent between 2006 and 2010 when greater access to health care may have prevented as many as 320 deaths per year. Providing health coverage to 830 uninsured adults prevented one death per year.”
A 2012 New England Journal of Medicine study analyzed the effects of Medicaid expansion on adult mortality in several states. It found a connection between access to Medicaid and reduced mortality: the exact figure was a 6.1 percent reduction in mortality.
The Center for American Progress projected what would happen if the NEJM results were applied to the states which had not expanded Medicaid. “In these states alone more than 12,000 lives per year could potentially be saved if state governments agree to expand their Medicaid programs.”
In 2017, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) predicted that 22-24 million Americans would lose coverage under the AHCA. If 3 percent of these Americans died presumably because of this impediment to receiving healthcare, then 720,000 Americans might have died because of that lack of coverage over time.
It’s time to pay attention.
The Congressman at the start of this column also famously stated that “Nobody wants anybody to die.” It sounds great – and it’s a notion that most of us can probably agree with.
But at this critical juncture in our nation’s healthcare history – when Americans are more concerned than ever about losing the protections they gained from the ACA – we must pay even closer attention.
We must closely examine our candidates’ voting records on healthcare. We must not simply nod our heads at last-minute promises about preserving ACA’s protections. We can’t simply decide that cheap coverage is good coverage.
We should know better. After all, we’ve all “seen a thing or two.”

In need of a good dental insurance plan in South Florida.
I desperately need braces but I can't afford them, neither can my parents. I have two teeth that I call my shark teeth because they grew in back of my normal line of teeth. One on the top, and one on the bottom. So it bothers the hell out of my tongue and I can't stand it anymore. I'm always getting those annoying sore taste buds, like one would get if they bite their tongue, on my tongue because one of my shark teeth is my fang so it hurts like hell. I need to fix my teeth but I'll need a good dental insurance plan that covers a big percentage of the cost of my braces. And it cant be just a dental discount plan, those on average only discount 25% and I need more than that. I'm 17, I live with my parents and they'll be paying for it, but it will only be a single plan, not a family plan. I live in South Florida. Why has my car insurance jumped up from 700 to 3000?
Two weeks ago I done some insurance quotes. I was shopping around and doing price comparison sites. I did quotes on a few different car makes and models but all cars were 1.2 or less. All quotes were comin up around 700 and 800 and 900 and up to about 1500. Now when I do quotes on 1.2 cars, or example an old 1994 ford fiesta and1.2 Peugeot kisser they are all coming up around 2000-3000 All my details are exactly the same ad two weeks ago. Literally exactly the same. Could it be the weather affecting the price? Surely not that much though?""

Car insurance question?????
me and my husband both have a car and have full no claims on both of them however we went to france for a year now we have returned but our uk insurance company are saying our no claims is no good as last year we were in france and they can't read whether we had a claim or not as our policy is in french!! the french company wont translate it to english as it's a french legal document!! so now although we have full no claims we are being penalised for leaving the country for a year!!!! we feel this is discrimination!!!!! we can translate it for them and the english lady in the french office has said it is ok for the uk company to call but of course this is not good enough!! any advice would be great!!!

The next day i gave him a call and he said that he will not go to the doctor and that the back will fine, its just a little soar. 2 days after he went to the doctor and told that he got into a car accident. What i mean is you know how some insurance companies give you a little discount if you havent gotten into an accident or received any tickets or any sort for a year? Well say After one year you cancel your insurance for about 7 months, and then you want to get re-insured, would that discount still be available? I just got an expired registration and no insurance ticket.?
I just found out my registration expired back in Oct of 2008. I don't pay insurance because it is a scam, they don't help you when you need it, and they hike your rates when you claim something even though that is what you pay them for in the 1st place. But I had 2 stickers on my car. One that said November 11. and one that said October 08. So I thought that the newest sticker meant that is when the experation was. But the officer said November is the 11th. I am like yes, but why would they write the number down when you can read it right there? That means 2011. On top of this, I never got a notice from my dmv. so now I have to go to court over this miss undestanding and I can't help but feel I just got cheated by the police and the DMV because they failed to properly lable their sticker and failed to give me a notice. I checked my tags just a month ago in fact which is why I knew it expired in 2011 but the officer just refuses to see it as a miss understanding. Is there a legal service I can go through to get this ticket written off as a zero considering the fact I pretty much just got screwed due to the way the laws don't actually protect the innocent?""

Ian vs. The Fastest Growing Tumor
My boo, my fiancée, my love, you are my hero!
Today has been a mixed bag of emotions and for good reason. Ian, my fiancée has currently been in the hospital for 22 days (almost the whole month of June) and is in his 29th hour straight of intense chemotherapy. This is his 2nd chemotherapy treatment in three weeks. I am listening to him breath softly, finally getting some good rest he needs. I can’t help but feel so close and yet so distant from him, even though he is two feet away from me.
What I thought was a journey for me in the beginning of the year quickly became a a rough path for both of us. Not many know, but since the end of last year, I started to experience this crazy pain in my legs. It was as if someone was squeezing them and holding me tightly at the waist. I tried everything from hot soaks in the tub to wearing dresses so that my pants wouldn’t rub the sore areas. The busier my job got, the worse the pain would get from sitting at my desk. In the beginning of the year, my feet would swell to two times their size and I had a hard time walking and even fitting into shoes. At first I ignored the pain because I have been able to weather pain before. Then after a while, it became so troublesome and it was hard to get through my work every day without complaint. At first, I hid it from my fiancee but after a while, I would come home in tears because the pain was so intense. My fiancee helped me cope by setting up foot baths or rubbing my feet, but nothing seemed to help. Everything seemed helpless. I decided to get it checked out and come to find out, I have sciatica from too much weight and an early back injury pressing on my sciatic nerve. I didn’t know weather to be mad or happy at the news. I was mad because I have always been somewhat heavy and have never taken my health serious enough to change it. Happy because I knew what I needed to do.
But I never got there. I let stress get the best of me just like I have all those years I kept telling myself, “this is my year to get healthy!”
February 14th, 2017 was a day of celebration. Ian and I are those sappy couples that take that day very seriously. Its not about the gifts but a celebration of what we have built together. To celebrate our lives and what we mean to each other. I didn’t really have to much time to think about it but Ian made surprise reservations at my favorite restaurant, Leopold's Kafe in Georgetown, Washington DC. It was a lovely night with dinner and conversation. Afterwards we decided to go home and gorge on Valentines Day chocolates. That night into the next day, he was feeling feverish and said that his stomach hurt him really bad. Who knew that was the start of a very scary journey.
Immediately we though it was something he ate. You see, he can’t have gluten due to his autoimmune disease, Celiacs. We checked the food recipes at Leopold's, checked the ingredients of the chocolates, and several other things we ate that day. Nothing seemed obvious, but we both agreed to be more careful. Over the next couple of weeks, the pain would come and go. We finally cut more things out of our diet including our beloved Chipotle and the occasional trip to McDonald's for their yummy hash browns. Then suddenly he didn’t complain about the pain and he looked like he was getting better. I selfishly didn’t ask if he was still in pain and focused on getting myself healthy. To this day, I am still kicking myself because I knew better!
Things got better for me. I cut out a lot of sugar and complex carbs from my diet, I sought the help of nutrition blogs and things seemed to be improving with stress. Things were pretty stable for about three weeks until I saw Ian rub his belly one night. I knew that he still had pain. He reluctantly told me that night that he didn’t want me to worry and that's why he never told me. The pain never went away, he just tried to weather it. My spidy senses were telling me, “take him to the hospital!!” I asked him what he wanted to do and he said no because he had no insurance.
Every article I read about his symptoms pointed to Celiac attacks. I just figured it was something we were eating. I tore our house apart looking for the magical culprit of his pain. Most days he was ok, and then he would have a day where he just couldn’t stand it. He would drag a blanket to our living room and just fall asleep for the day. I read a blog that said a vegetable cleanse is a great way to neutralize your Celiac symptoms. Reboot your system. I made hardy soups, and stir-fry's to try and cure him. But it wasn’t enough. I couldn’t breathe.
It was too much to handle some days. I came home defeated from work because I felt like nothing was working. I started to binge on the occasional unhealthy snack and soon I was eating badly all day long. It helped to cope watching my loved one suffer so much with a cheeseburger and fries. It was all I could do to get through the day at work as well. I felt lost, I felt stuck, and worst of all, I felt hopeless. I made a tough decision to leave my job after 5 years. I needed to step back and get some clarity. I have been running most of my life with very little downtime. I am always constantly worried about my career (where its going), not having enough money, what people think of me, not being where I want to be in life, what people say behind my back, and it all just got to be too much. I needed to heal and so did Ian.
The first few days were glorious. No where to be. No one to worry about. But a few weeks into my health sabbatical, Ian started to get more intense pain. This was the first time I started to get really worried about what if it’s not Celiacs. May 29th of this year was pretty normal. I ran Ian to the metro so he could get to work. After the trip to work, his pain intensified so bad I had to run into town to pick him up. That whole week Ian slept and tried to remain still to help the pain. June 1st, 2017 is a day I will never forget. I woke pretty early that morning to get a head start on the day. I had a full day of applying to jobs and watching tutorial videos. I made a smoothie for myself and thought I would offer Ian one. When I checked on him, he was curled in the fetal position grabbing his stomach. He tried to walk to the living room but didn’t make it too far without doubling over. This time he whaled from the pain. I knew he was in trouble. In flutter of activity, I quickly dressed and walked Ian slowly to our car. First stop was an emergency primary care that was recommended to us for people without insurance. The receptionist took one look at him and said, “No honey, he needs urgent care!” I quickly dragged him back out into the car and went to the closest urgent care, where they exclaimed, “Nope, don’t bring him in here, he needs to go to the ER!” Frustrated, I yelled, “Fine, where is one?” Thankfully INOVA Alexandria hospital was not far. I grabbed Ian’s arm, telling him to hang on. They were hospital I could trust.
What happened next, I don’t think anyone could of prepared for. Ian was hastily put into an ER room. In the first 30 minutes of him being admitted, he had multiple X-Rays, an EKG, a CT scan, and pain meds. When they wheeled him back from his CT scan, he was able to put his head back on the gurney and just rest. I felt uneasy there. I watched Ian’s heart monitor creep across the screen. I watched his IV drip slowly. I watched the flurry of nurses attending other patients. In that moment, It all felt so lonely and I quickly grabbed for Ian’s hand. The ER doctor came into his makeshift room very quickly exclaiming that he had bad news. My heart sank. What could it be? He exclaimed that they found a tumor in the small intestine, colon area. 10cm’s big! It was as if everything after that moment was in slow motion. Neither Ian nor I could comprehend the words that just came out of this doctors mouth. Did he just say Tumor? I reached for Ian. I couldn’t help it, I just let the tears flow. I didn’t care who saw. This was raw and this was real. We held each other close. I could see the worry written all over Ian’s face. In a moment not to longer, the Chaplin came to visit us. I was still in shock, but she was the calm we needed. She offered us assistance with anything we needed. She offered her ear if we needed. I was super appreciative of her in that moment. After her, two other doctors showed up to tell us that they were very certain Ian had a Lymphoma of some kind. Ian couldn’t help but ask them what he did in his life to get this. They just exclaimed that it was nothing he did. I cried so hard that day. I cried because the answer we were looking for was so terrifying.
The first day was pretty uneventful and for good reason. Ian just needed pain meds and a good day of rest. After that, the first week was full of different biopsies and tests to determine what the tumor was. It was a waiting game of meds, restless sleep, not being able to eat and different levels of pain. Finally, an oncologist gave Ian the option of starting chemotherapy to get the pain under control. From all the scans they saw, that tumor looked like it was suffocating everything from colon to kidney, and if they didn’t act then, it could get worse. Ian immediately told the doctor he wanted to start chemotherapy.
His mom and I were able to sit with Ian his first treatment. At first he didn’t feel anything. Then after two hours, came uncontrollable chills and he complained his body didn’t feel like his. I watched him the whole night. I was scared. I wanted to make sure he was going to be ok. It was seven hours of hell but he came out on top. The next morning, I awoke to find Ian smiling at me from across the room. He was sitting up for the first time in weeks and he wanted real food!
Over the next couple of days, he took it slow, walking different halls in the hospital to build strength. I was so proud at how hard he was fighting. He ate bacon for first time in a while and he said it tasted like heaven! I cried tears of happiness. Chemo is heck of a cure!
Wednesday the 14th started like any other day. Tech came in to take his vitals and then we got word that he needed a lumbar puncture with a procedure to put chemo in his spinal column. Ian was diagnosed with Burkitts Lymphoma which is a super rare and super aggressive cancer. Only 1,200 people in the United States gets Burkitts Lymphoma a year. One of the major places that Burkitts can spread is the spinal column and fluid. The doctors were doing everything to slow the spread.
The next day we were able to take Ian home for the first time in two weeks. He had two demands and I couldn't be happier to get that for him. A hot shower and victory nachos. Victory nachos for all the crap he has been through in the past two weeks. It was so good to sit with him and eat Mexican food like everything was normal! He even wore Super Man shirt that his mom and grandma got him!
Here we are, almost two weeks later back in the hospital. After severe headaches plagued him for the week he was released, he also had an attack of belly pain again. It made us sad to come back to the hospital but he needs to get better.
Every three weeks for several months, Ian will be admitted to the hospital to receive three days straight of chemotherapy. As we speak, Ian is in his 29th hour of his 2nd round of chemo. So far the only symptoms he has has is intense waves of nausea. Thank heaven for anti-nausea meds!
As the doctor put it, it will be a few months of hell but the prognosis looks amazing. We caught it early and I thank heaven every day for that. All the tests have come back negative which means he has no cancer in his bone marrow, spinal fluid/column, or brain. The tumor has also lost 3 cm. Take that, you piece of crap cancer.
Through this whole experience, Ian has not once let this cancer get to him. He still makes his famous jokes, and his laughter is music to my ears. When his mom, grandma or some of our friends would drop by, everyone would talk about the good times and remind him what he was fighting for. We have made some amazing connections in the hospital and a lot of people stop by just wish Ian and I well for the day. His amazing nurses and doctors have been so gentle since they know that he in all kinds of pain. If we were to go through a horrible experience, at least were not going through it alone.
I am also grateful for all of you reading this weather you are our family or friends. You have been an amazing support system. Its easy to feel alone when going through something so traumatic. Every day when I log on to Facebook or my email, I see messages of hope and positivity and that is what will get us through this!
Now I end with this. My boo, my fiancée, my love, you are my hero! I have watched you at your lowest and I have watched you at your best. This hospital stay, even through all the positivity has been miserable and you get up fighting every day. You realize you can’t do this fight alone and when you reach out, it is an honor to help you. Your Mom, Grandma, friends and any nurses or doctors here would agree. You are loved and you will never walk alone. Even though this fight is bodily yours, mentally and spiritually your family and friends are here to guide you. Now lets pretend this is the ending of Office Space the movie but instead of taking baseball bats to an outdated fax machine, we a beating the crap out of your cancer.
XOXO from your future wifey! I love you so much!
