Persona 2 Innocent Sin Review

I wanted to have some time in between playing the game and writing my thoughts for Persona 2 Innocent Sin. I will be referencing it and other Persona games so there may be some light spoilers for games 2-5.

I played the psp version of the game on a Playstation TV. I beat the game at 76 hours on the dot. I have not completed most of the theater missions, but I have completed the main story of the game and did do a few sidequests.

My review will be organized in several sections-gameplay, story, music, characters, LGBTQ representation, extra content, wishlist and recommendation.

Gameplay:

Persona 2 Innocent Sin was released in 1999. Therefore plays as a game from 1999. The PSP rerelease updated menus, changed the difficulty, and added all out attack art similar to P3-P5 for the fusion spells. I love the all out attack animation and although the menus got a little cumbersome, it didn’t really impact gameplay for me.

The biggest complaint about Persona 2 IS is how easy and repetitive it is and the high encounter rate. The battles for the most part are easy and if you set up all your attacks in the first round, you can basically use autoplay until an emergency occurs or you encounter an enemy in which you must change it up.

I never saw the gameplay as repetitive as others do and I feel those who do only just battle and that’s it. I was constantly trying to get all the fusion spells, max up my personas to trade them for items, try different combinations for the demon negotiations and spread demon rumors to get items, spells, and cards (you need cards to summon new personas in the velvet room.) Demon negotiations also allow you a better look into each of the characters’ personalities and relationships. Events in the game will change how the characters react in these negotiations so it is always nice to go back to them throughout the course of the game.

The demons you encounter have emotions. I believe they are intrigued, happy, angry and fearsome. Make them happy and they will offer a pact with you and give you free stuff and willing to spread rumors for you. Make them angry they will fight you. Make them fear you they will run away. Make them intrigued and you get the cards needed to summon personas and even more if you already have a pact with them.

I wanted to return to the big complaint though, the high encounter rate. This was something that I felt hot and cold about. Most of the time this didn’t bother me, because I needed to level up my personas anyway. But when I needed to backtrack and explore further, it did get a little bothersome.

You can use estoma to avoid enemies weaker than you. It is not a passive skill, so once you have a persona that has it, you have to cast it every time it wears off. At the Mu casino, you can also purchase a disguise kit that does the same thing, but it effects last about the same amount of time and it is ridiculously expensive. Just use estoma.

As briefly mentioned above, unlike Persona 5 in which you can just catch Personas, in P2IS there are only two ways to get them. You get cards from demon negations, take those cards to the velvet room and then trade them in for a Persona. But you have to enough cards to summon it and the persona has to be 5 cards within your character level.

You can also talk to the demon painter, for him to make you cards for the specific arcana you want by using blank cards. These are also given through demon negotiations that you have a pact with.

In P2, ALL your characters are capable of changing out Personas, but their compatibility with different personas varies with their Arcana.

The other way to get personas is through the story. There are certain actions that you must take to get the prime personas and then the final personas. These personas are character specific and you can’t give them to other characters.

I wanted to talk about three more things before I move on to the story: rumormongers, fusion spells, and dungeons.

Persona 2IS is based around rumors. Just like P3 is for the dark hour, P4 the midnight channel, P5 around palaces and so on...

To get certain items and progress the story, you MUST gather and spread rumors. There are five characters throughout the game called rumormongers. They will give you information in exchange for receiving information. You then share this information to the detective agency, pay a fee for them to spread them for you, and there you go. rumor spread. As mentioned earlier, there are also demon specific rumors.

Fusion spells were something I really enjoyed in this game. Although hearing “Are you ready? Here goes” and “Let’s go everybody” will be stuck in my head for the rest of eternity...

Basically, to create a fusion spell, members in your party require a requisite spell and then that party member is placed in a specific order when taking turns. Once that spell is unlocked, it will let you know if you have the requisite spells and you no longer have to adjust the order of party members. Some of the spells you need to unlock fusion spells are persona specific. The fusion spells are elemental.

I will not go into weaknesses of elemental spells, I am just going to say that you aren’t “down”’ed like you are in 3-5.

Finally, my first real pet peeve with this game-the dungeons.

Oh boy. Air raid, AeroSpace and one of the four Zodiac dungeons (I am pretty sure its Eikichi’s) gets ALL my hate. There are cheap gimmicks that make the game artificially hard but only for these dungeons and more so, frustrating.

But I am not going to go into detail why, and the other dungeons are not bad at all. But play the game and experience these dungeons for yourself. That is all I am going to say about that.

Story:

This section will be nowhere was long as gameplay. The story did not go where I thought it would, but that’s a good thing. I would go in completely blind if you can. The ending definitely surprised me a bit. I think it has one of the best stories of the persona games.

It does not follow a calendar like the later Persona games and time just blends together. By the end of the game, you won't know if a day, week or month passed from the beginning to the end.

Music:

The music is actually really good. It is the reason why I played the game in the first place. Just don’t look at the soundtracks names. Spotify has it available if you live in the US. You are better off listening to the soundtrack because I promise you that most dungeons songs will be cut off due to the frequency of battles.

Some of my favorite songs are Smile Hirasaka, Unbreakable Tie, Kurosu’s theme, Joker and the Taurus dungeon’s theme.

Characters:

Despite Persona 2 not having social links, I feel like I know these characters better than some of the persona games that do have social links. It is also the only Persona game that I can say without any hesitation that I like the entire main cast.

I truly love them all, but my favorite would probably be Yukino or Maya.

Unlike other Personas, the dynamics for Persona 2 IS are different, because not all of your party members are high school students. The adult characters have adult problems, the high school students have high school problems, and all of them have deep psychological problems and abandonment issues that will take years of intense therapy (or Philemeon) to forget.

One of the biggest themes of Persona 2 is confronting your past and learning from the mistakes of your childhood. And the characters do! And by the end of the game you are so proud of how far they have come. And then things happen...

LGBTQ representation

Let me say that I started P2IS off on the wrong foot, but I am still absolutely justified at being upset by it. One of the very first interactions you can have with a NPC is through a very uncomfortable exchange between you, Eikichi and a transman that is pretty transphobic. And to add the icing on the cake, Atlus refers to him as a “weird woman.”

I was literally going to just stop playing the game like an hour in because of that, but I decided to continue.

What I discovered was a game that has highs and lows when it comes to LGBTQ representation.

You can play as a bi character who can confess his feelings to men and women. *Stares hard at Persona 4 and Persona 5*

You have a gay character that has an interesting story, character development, is unabashedly gay and isn’t a walking stereotype. Nor is his entire arc centered around gay panic.

From what I understand the dialogue from the NPC does get better, but I am not holding my breath.

And the one sapphic kiss scene we get in a Persona game is a kiss of manipulation and not love. So that is a little sad.

But overall, P2IS does try to make an effort. And it definitely makes a better effort than its successor released almost 2 decades later.

Extra content:

Again, Persona 2 doesn’t have social links or a calendar. Please don’t approach it like the other games where you have to fill up your time between dungeons. It is not a necessity, but there are things you can do.

Mu is a casino that you can visit that allows you to play mini games to gain coins that you can use to get weapons, rare items, and even unlock personas. I spent a little too much time at Mu....

You can also talk to NPCs to do side missions. Be careful though. You have to do the side missions in a given amount of time or you may not get rewarded for it. Also P2IS is very much like Final Fantasy 9 where it is much better to go to a place sooner than later, because there may not be a later...

You also have the factory which is an optional dungeon that opens up more and more as you progress through the game.

There is the theater which is a PSP exclusive which has side missions unrelated to the main story that you can play. They are okay.

Wishlist

I hear so many people wanting a remake of P2IS so the game can be more accessible. I am very torn about this. Besides the difficulty and maaybe tweaking the encounter rate a bit, I wouldn’t change a thing. However, I also know that I couldn’t enjoy Shadow of Colossus until the controls were updated. Like I tried and then just gave up.

I honestly don’t want a remake. I don’t trust the Atlus of today with this game.

I do want it to be acknowledged and more accessible though.

But if I had to make a wish list, this is what it would be. Again, this would be a “it would be nice list.”

Make the battles harder.

Update cut scenes? I really like the art for the cut scenes already, but would like some more. Maybe keep the drawings but update the CG?

Social side quests. I do not want social links in Persona 2. However, side quests that allow you to learn more about your character like a social link would, would be something I would be very interested in.

Make the portraits consistent. The art from the original game and the new art put in the PSP game (I am talking about you climax lady) clash so much. Pick one style and stick to it.

I want to fight Ms. Ideal. Let me do it for reasons. Give me a chance to battle her.

I want the option to switch out characters. I love both Jun and Yukki, but I want to be able to play with both.

Let me skip the animation when I create a new Persona.

*EDIT* I can’t believe I forgot this and feel awful I did, but I do think they should keep the trans NPC, but change the dialogue and the the name. It isn’t the NPC that is the problem but the dialogue and actions. Otherwise, I think it would be ok.

I think that’s it.

Recommendation:

So should you play Persona 2 IS? Short answer, yes. Long answer is that it is complicated. In a few months the game will no longer be accessible for psp consoles. The physical version of the game is ridiculously expensive. You will have to accept the fact this game is on psp and its sequel’s psp version never came to English speaking markets.

You may not like the graphics, gameplay, or that it doesn’t feel like the later persona games. And as much as I love this game, that is alright. You do you. But I truly do think you are missing out on a great game. So if you have the opportunity to do so, yeah absolutely give it a shot.

41. Travel Log- Places you want to go! There are so many ways to do this, so look up different versions before starting!

42. Family and Friend Favorites- Their favorite colors, animals, stores, places, hobbies, etc.

43. DIY Projects- Things you want to try out someday.

44. Chore List- Keep track of when you do your chores so that your house doesn’t become disgusting or dusty.

45. Bucketlist- What do you want to do before graduation, moving out, marriage, having kids, etc.

46. Story Ideas- I always come up with story ideas and then when I sit down to write them, I blank.

47. Period Log- For people with periods that have many PMS symptoms or even PMDD symptoms. This is a great way to show your doctor all of the things you go through each cycle.

48. Words That Make You Happy- Silly words, ugly words, words that are fun to say, etc.

49. Things That Make You Happy- People, places, and things.

50. Monthly Habits- Water intake, cleaning, bathing, exercising, reading, etc.

51. Story Titles- This can be titles for books, short stories, poems, or just nice sounding titles for anything.

52. Made Up Words- I make myself laugh with all the words I make up on the daily.

53. Follower Counter- This page keeps me inspired to keep doing what I love.

54. Index- Always have an index for easy access to the pages you want to find.

55. Icons- Sometimes we need to have icons to make our pages pretty. Sometimes we make too many icons and never use them (me).

56. Packing List- For those who travel often or stay at friends’ houses more than our own, it’s good not to forget the things we need.

57. Morning Routines- Our bodies need routines for mornings to get us ready for the day.

58. Nightly Routines- Our bodies need routines for nights to prepare us for sleep. (see what I did there?)

59. Weight Tracker- If you’re struggling with your weight, keep a chart tracker or add your daily weight to your calendar.

60. Pen Test Page- If you get new pens, highlighters, or markers, its best to test them out before using them.

61. Brain Dump- Sometimes we just need to jot down ideas or thoughts. It’s okay if they don’t make sense.

62. Spending Log- Keep track of what you spend because you might need that someday.

64. Habit Tracker Reward System- This is something I came up with myself, so if you have questions, message me!

70. Achievements- What have you done that you are proud of?

71. Weekly Log- Keep track of your week. This is one of the most used pages in any bullet journal honestly.

72. Monthly Log- Another overly used page in any bullet journal. Very important.

73. Daily Log- I don’t do this too often, but I know it helps others who really need a whole page for each day.

74. Bill Tracker- This was fun to make and something I will be using now

75. Income Tracker- How much and how frequently do you get paid?

76. Deadline Page- Prepare yourself for things that you need to get done. Do not procrastinate this year!

77. Vocabulary Practice- Sometimes we just need to educate ourselves on our own terms. (and with our own terms. Anyone? Anyone?)

78. Doctor Appointment Log- If you don’t want to add them to your calendar or they are too far out to add to the calendar you’re using.

79. Username and Password List- Be careful with this page. If someone finds your bullet journal, this could be bad.

80. Monthly Cover Page- These are so cute! I just started doing them, but they make my journal so artsy and pretty.

81. Dream Log- This is a fun one. Track your dreams. This would be good to line up with how many hours you get as well.

82. Favorites List- What are YOUR favorites? Movies, snacks, drinks, subjects, people, colors, animals, etc.

83. Habits To Break- Do you bite your nails? Quote The Office too much? Throw clothes into piles on your floor? STOP THAT.

84. Small Things That Matter- Puppies, getting up in the morning, pennies, smiling at yourself, laughter, etc. Remind yourself that there is good in the world.

85. Things To Sell- Get rid of the things you don’t need. Or make things to sell! Be prosperous this year.

86. School Schedule- High school and college students really need this. Even teachers do too. Make a chart of your classes, room numbers, buildings, and times.

87. House Projects- Things that need fixing or improvements around the house.

88. Day Trip Ideas- Fun places to go when you have the time.

89. Things I Am Bad At- It’s okay to admit our shortcomings and work on them. Or just accept them for what they are.

90. Resolutions- YES! Make yourself this better this year. Be the best you.

91. Crochet/Knit Log- When making a blanket, small items, or just keeping track of your improvements in your skill.

92. Future Planning- Make a list of the things you want in your future and how you plan on getting them.

93. Quirk List- Ever notice you do small little weird things? Make a list to appreciate who you are.

94. Who Borrowed What- Sometimes people borrow things and you forget until you need it again. By then, they threw it out or gave it to someone else.

95. Six Word Stories- Get those creative juices pumping.

96. Love Yourself- Write down all the things you love about yourself. Appreciate yourself.

97. Paying It Back- Honestly, a good page to have, but it doesn’t get much attention from me.

98. Childhood Dreams- We should always try to look back on what we thought we wanted

99. Good Deed Ideas- Ever think “wow, wouldn’t it be great if I could _____”?

100. Mind Mapping- There are a few reasons I really enjoy this, but it really helps me get my thoughts and ideas out more easily

Lightning Mailbag

I sometimes get questions that have really short answers, so I thought I’d just consolidate a bunch of them into a single post. I’m calling it the Lightning Mailbag. Enjoy.

What is your take on the controversy that Fallout 76 will be either an online game or a game with online features? Justified or not? And can we trust what the leaks are saying?

[Read this post], but mentally replace “Dragon Age” with “Fallout 76″ and “EA” with “Zenimax”. It still applies.

How many lines of code does a AAA game have?

At least a couple of million.

Leaks happen moderately often, but given how many people have their hands in any given AAA game, it's amazing that many manage to avoid any major leaks ahead of time. How do such large teams of people working across so many aspects of the project manage to keep it on the down low?

Most of us whose livelihoods depend on it aren’t about to risk our careers for 15 seconds of internet fame.

If I really wanted a publisher to release an older game now no longer available to newer platforms for purchase what could I as a customer do? Thanks!

Buy the game on the secondary market. Buy a related game in the franchise that’s still available. Buy DLC for games in the franchise. Send them feedback and say “I want game X and I will happily pay for it”. But the most important thing is to spend money on it somehow. Money talks much louder than internet posts.

Recently we had a very dense day of reveals - a new Fallout, a new Pokemon, and a new Sonic Racing game announced. Is this a particularly good time of year to announce games, or is it just a coincidence that we had all these reveals simultaneously?

It’s the financial schedule. The quarter ended so a lot of companies are doing the new info dump thing to drum up investor interest.

I'm sorry to make you lose time with this but, why do you always use she/her/feminine pronouns?

Because I like to.

You often say that the most valuable feedback is personal one where players tell how they feel about a subject in a game,and that the "wishlist feedback" isnt usefull at all, why is that? Assuming that te "wishlist" is actually something doable and not something that only sounds good on paper, since that type of wishlist is obviously not gonna be usefull to you devs

Imagine yourself in this situation.

You’ve already got Wishlist A of things from a team of professionals who have been using the tools and tech for at least a year for 40+ hours a week. This wishlist has already been ranked in terms of feasibility, effort, and importance by experts who have been doing work similar to it for all this time.

You also obtain Wishlist B of things from players who have played the game for a few hours, have no idea how the technology or tools work, and have no idea how difficult things are or how long they will take to implement. None of the players can agree about what is more important on this list.

There might be some elements from Wishlist B that can be done. Those sorts of things do come through if we see them often enough and our people think they are of reasonable enough scope to do. But the signal to noise ratio from Wishlist B is much worse than Wishlist A. Most of the time, Wishlist B stuff gets fed to the community managers who will read them and pass along the more popular suggestions.

Ok, so with episode 13 of Tokyo Ghoul :RE now being out, I can safely say that my prediction of what they’d do was off the mark. I’d certainly have liked it, but hey, sometimes you just don’t hit the mark. Anyway, since then, I’ve rethought the approach they’d take. Rather than 2 arcs made up of 6 episodes each, with the second arc merging a lot of events, I suspect there’s just gonna be 1 arc that gets cut, and we’ll rather get 3 arcs in batches of 4 episodes.

So after the cut, here’s my thoughts on how I believe they’ll organize it, some things I pictured in my head better than others.

Episode 14: 68-76, Cochlea half of 81.

Opens up on the Cochlea invasion and Furuta seeing Kaneki on the camera. Cut to Hinami and Kaneki, title card at the end of 69, first half chapters 69-72, second half chapters 73-76 and second half of 81, ending with Kaneki breaking Arima's quinque from 81, and then Furuta revealing his kagune and countering Eto.

Episode 15: 77-87.

77 is cut except for the ending (Suzuya vs. Kurona already started in episode 13). Opens up with 78/79, Mutsuki's backstory and death of Torso, with Torso's backstory heavily abridged, Urie finding Torso's corpse (end of 77) and getting the info of the death of the special class. Title card after Arima slits his throat, first half 78-83, second half covers 83-85 up to the reveal of the dead Special Class mystery and Akira/Houji vs Tatara starting, move to 87 to finish Suzuya vs Kurona and set up a cliffhanger on Takizawa choking Akira, followed by the rest of 85/all of 86.

Episode 16: 88-98.

Mostly a condensed version of volume 9, with some changes: Koma and Irimi don't show up (remain dead until Spieldose), Amon flees and doesn't get captured by the Qs, Matsuri gets attacked on the ship by the clowns so there's no one left in Furuta's way (I believe this is the reason why Matsuri content from the early parts of the arc was cut).

Episode 17: 99-103, first half of 104, end of 116, 117-119.

Kaneki forms Goat in the intro, opening plays. 100-103+first half of 104 ("people without things to protect never fight to their last") make up the rest of the first half, but Matsuri's moments+references to the Clown Siege are cut, Furuta's already in power, and The Great Wheel saves Akira without tha lab infiltration. Second half is the end of 116 plus 117-119 with references to the Clown Siege events cut. Intro to the Oggai, Rize's fate revealed, and Touka going to talk with Akira mark the end of the episode.

Episode 18: 120-128.

Mostly straightforward adaptation, 120-124+implied 125 cover the first half, timeskip is moved ahead to 126 and the wedding is contrasted with the brutality of 127. Ends with the reveal of Furuta's plan+Ayato witnessing the remains of the underground city.

Episode 19: 129-133, 24th ward parts of 134-136, 139, intro and Kaneki/Tsukiyama talk from 140.

First half is 129-132, focusing on Kaneki and Touka's romance+Kaneki's failure to act, first half ends with Urie's "we'll become terrorists", Touken wedding and the expedition leaving. Second half focuses on the attack on the 24th ward. Ending of the episode is the Kaneki/Tsukiyama talk from 140, Touka running into Juuzou, and the meeting of Urie/Iwao with Furuta at the CCG offices.

Episode 20: CCG half of 136, 137-138, 141-146.

A few noticeable changes: Timeline-wise, this happens at the same time as the 24th ward assault. "Furuta" in the CCG offices is revealed to be Donato at the end, Clown Siege reveal merged (Mikito and Iwao captured Donato). The fate of the White Suits is just implied, Yomo vs. Tooru/Aura is greatly abridged. First half covers up to the first half of 143, as Kaneki gears up to fight Juuzou. Second half is the rest of 143, and 144-146, ending with the flashforward from episode 1 (Urie sees Dragon right after the battle, everyone comes back to witness the devastation, ends with Touka looking at him). Some other scenes of characters surviving Kaneki's devastation, like Suzuya's survival shown in 148, are pushed ahead.

Episode 21: 147-156.

First half is 147-151, with content generally abridged. Second half covers 152-156. No major changes, but first gen Qs interactions in the second half are prioritized, with second gen Qs dealt with mostly offscreen.

Episode 22: 157-165.

First half 157-161. Opening theme after 157, title card at the end of 158, then rest of the first half. As Kaneki attempts to swim through the gates, we cut to Touka finding him and cutting him out with the Qs aiding her last second, first half ends with Furuta and V making it to Rize and the source of the toxin. Second half is 162-165. Interactions are slightly abridged and the timeline is more linear. Episode ends with the Donato-controlled Eto entering the battlefield, mirroring episode 22 of part 1 (episode 10 of Root A).

Episode 23: 166-172, 175.

Yet again, no major changes. First half is 166-169, ending with Uta revealing his Kakuja. Second half is 170-172, but following Donato's death, we move right to 175. Following the cliffhanger of Eto and Naki's return, we move on to the end of 172, with Furuta and Kaneki's fight starting and Furuta's counter to Kaneki mirroring Furuta and Eto from episode 14.

Episode 24: 173-174, intro to 175, 176-179.

First half up to 176, dealing with the Kaneki-Furuta fight underground. Second half 177-179. Wishlist of changes (because I dunno if they’d happen, but I wish): Showing Ayato actually rescue Kaneki, Eto's fate being less vague and her getting a bigger role in the ending to mirror the first episode of the season (major players were Kaneki, Furuta, Eto, and Ayato)/because it’s Eto, less exposition and more showing what characters are doing in the ending.

We’ll see how this ends up. But I’d actually rather like this. Sure, there’d be compression and cutting, but I didn’t mind the way they did it in episode 13 considering that I feel they still had a hang of what makes the series what it is. And it’s not like they haven’t made changes that I wouldn’t consider positive, the new version of the Kaneki-Eto conversation that we got in episode 13 was something I legit really liked. But anyway. Those are my thoughts on it. We’ll see how it pans out.

HOW I RUN MY BLOG

SPEED: my god i am slow. i am the slowest of the slow - the slowest slow to ever BE slow. i have threads in here from two months ago and asks from three months ago and it’s not that i don’t have the will nor the muse to answer any of it tbh. it’s more so that i just don’t have time. between juggling work, friends, family and the additional need of trying to make up my overtime hours for the dates i’ll be overseas in august and october, it’s been more than a little difficult to try to keep everything afloat. that’s one of my issues.

my second issue is that i... tend to try to write in depth threads and responses, as much as possible; and i’m a perfectionist of my work to the worst degree. to the point that if i don’t have the right idea or the right flow of words at the time - my work is not getting posted. at all. in fact, i’d likely rather delete something i spent two hours working on rather than take the risk of posting it only to hate it for the rest of my life. it feels like shame for some reason i don’t ??? get it ???

like i want to try to create variety, but also i want to try to build an actual story. something that will be fun for both me and my partner, that will be a thread that will have some possible semblance of weight to future interactions. and sometimes the ideas don’t come as quickly as i would like. or they do, and then my brain runs out of vocabulary. and throttles a pillow i hate it, i hate that my standards for myself are like this, but my god - it’s the only way i can be confident about my work and know that i’m not wasting mine or anyone else’s time and it just has to be my own standard of perfect or i run myself into the ground with my anxiety and have a minor breakdown and that’s the worst thing i can do to myself, honestly asdbhsabdha !!!

REPLIES: i write long replies, unfortunately. though i never expect people to match ( and honestly it fluctuates; sometimes it’ll be long, sometimes short, so there’s no pressure or requirement at all really ) , and all i care about at this point is i’m given something to work with and it’s not the kind of thing where it’s a reply for the sake of a reply. i also would prefer to have threads where people add stuff to the threads, and like... i don’t really have to run the show by myself to keep things interesting? that would be nice tbh. in terms of length however, i will likely do at least two or three paragraphs, because one paragraph threads don’t quite encompass everything my muse tends to feel, and sometimes it can get longer - meaning like... two word document pages long. though that type of novella is usually reserved for people i know can match it, otherwise, i try my best to keep it as succinct as possible.

my brain sorta has this.... organization thing going tbh? where its like i can only do ask replies today, or i can only do threads today, or i can only do headcannon or ooc stuff today. sometimes it even goes by verse, where it decides if it can manage pokemon threads, or main threads, or fate threads, etc. which i understand isn’t quite the... best way to go about things, and it’s weird. very, very weird. but that’s also really the only way i’m able to sort of figure out where to put my attention nowadays. so everything gets replied to in truth, it just. it takes a while. :c :c :c please be patient with me, i’m trying my best!!

STARTERS: i hold starter calls a lot. sometimes it can be every two months or it can be ( most likely ) when i get a new influx of followers and i want to interact with them. though it can tend to take a while for me to get them out, even if i have them on a list. usually its because i want to try to create starters that will be interesting enough to keep going ( which is sorta my overall theme with everything on here, if you’ll notice ) and sometimes the ideas don’t quite click. or, like with the organization thing, my brain needs to be able to conjure up starters in particular for anything to work.

more often, i will do inbox calls instead, and those i do personalize according to the muse i’m sending it to. that way if the other mun replies with a response i like, i can continue it into a thread, so that’s sorta like a reverse starter call in that way, i guess. i always clear out my starters owed though, i promise. it just takes me a good while.

INBOX: sucks in sharp breath

i’m gonna be way honest here - once upon a time, i didn’t get that many asks at all, so i thought like, if i got like 20 of them, that already was a heck ton and i had to get the number lower. and then somehow i got an influx in asks a few weeks ago and that number jumped to thirty. and then it kept going until forty. and then i thought ‘okay you know what, so long as its not 50, you can still get it down, you’re good!!’

let me tell you - i am at 76 right now and i am confused as all fuck as to how it got to this point. BUT I HONESTLY DON’T MIND. i love getting asks !! even if i take a while to answer them, because like the starters, i try to give it an actual moment and not a quick snip of an interaction that doesn’t matter in the long run. so asks? same length - two or three paragraphs and more, nothing less. and i tend to do anons first because i know whoever sent it might check back and i don’t want them scrolling through the whole blog thinking they missed it, but tbh, i try to do my older asks first overall. and sometimes there are some asks that require a lot of emotion on jackie’s part, so those get long and take a wee bit longer than most, but i always try to make the wait worth it. luckily, things appear to be going kinda well on that end tbh. i have a good pace set up so i don’t feel like i’m drowning in stuff, and if i could just have ONE DAY WHERE I CAN WORK, I CAN CUT BACK THAT NUMBER EASY, I SWEAR TO GOD.

SELECTIVITY: severely selective. to the nth degree. i follow about less than 180 rp blogs because the rest are aesthetics at the moment, though i’m always looking for more. i try to find blogs with muns that i feel really care about their muse as a whole, and blogs that have a pretty good grasp on writing. i decide whether or not i can make jackie work with them somehow, and then i sorta check the writing itself to make sure i can jive with it, and then that’s when i decide to follow.

i have. a very particular standards with other blogs that need to be checked off tbh? because i want these interactions to actually matter. so besides the writing, honestly the thing that rings out the most for me would be their passion and their ideas. like, i want to make sure i can create something new with this mun so i just try to see if they will match what i give them with their own ideas, because coming up with a majority of the plots on my own is the most exhausting thing, and i can’t do that consistently. if i can get that sense from them that they’re willing to try to push their own ideas forth, that’s really what makes me follow them back asap !! on the other hand, i also check the mun - make sure they’re not the type i’ll likely have trouble with down the line. i check tags, i check ooc posts, i check everything. i am a self proclaimed blog stalker and tbh, its the only way i keep my dash in check. and so far its worked out very well so it’s all good on my end, even if that means less people to interact with.

Okay like I know that Mr. Bobbsey is a career criminal but why exactly is everyone acting like Ace joined a gang when all he did was drive his girlfriend's dad a couple of drives after he got out of prison, only to stop doing so when he saw definitive proof that Mr. Bobbsey was using him for criminal reasons.

Like I feel like I missed something with the most recent episode because all the adults were being super harsh on him.

Max’s in-laws can fuck right the hell off, why support someone (who is clearly making an effort) when instead you can announce you’re taking their kid and immediately hang up the phone.

Seriously, every single time that they’re on screen they treat him like dirt. They clearly don’t even consider him a person worth taking to, just an obstacle between them and their granddaughter.

some time ago i was asked about skins i’d like to see for the heroes here’s another wishlist before i fuck off to sleep

doomfist: it would make no sense on the battlefield but neither does most of what widow wears... GIVE US TUX DOOMFIST

genji: i’m still fixated on the idea of kitsune mask genji, but a neko-themed genji would be sick too

mccree: fucking legendary where his head hair and/or facial hair doesn’t look stupid. i’m sorry. i love jesse mccree with all my goddamn FUCKING heart, but... the moustaches don’t work. sorry. it’s the truth.

pharah: she’s already a furry just go full on monster theme, something with CLAWS preferably. i’d also like to see something ornamental/intricate, i think her silhouette with the wings could lend itself to a really elegant legendary design. not that a rococo skin would fit her personality, but it would look SO COOL

Her feet were barely touching the ground as she zipped through the night, panting, leaving nothing but a blue trail behind her. Blood was dripping down her chin, she brushed the back of her hand against her cheek as she turned around, making sure he wasn’t following her. “Fuck”, she tripped, landing on the thick layer of snow covering the streets in this cold December night.

She knew she should’ve stayed home, she knew it, and still. Somehow she’d thought it was a good idea. After all, it was Christmas Eve, they wouldn’t expect her there. She’d planned everything : all she had to do is to find a way into Talon’s lair, sneak into Sombra’s quarters and look for any kind of information she could gather without alerting the hacker. Well, the last part was probably the trickiest one but she figured since they wouldn’t be here anyway, it would give her some time to find a way to get at least something. And maybe she could even take a look at their quarters, that’d be enough information already. All she had to do was to be careful, and avoid their cameras and sensors, but she already had an idea of their whereabouts, so she wasn’t that worried about getting caught. Plus, it’s not like she had better stuff to do tonight.

She loved everything about Christmas : the pine tree filling the living room with its very distinct smell, the lights and baubles hanging down its branches, the whole town being slowly covered in snow, the music, the food, everything. But mostly, she loved how it could bring so many people together. As if life had been paused. And god knew she needed it, more than anyone else - breakdown after breakdown, she felt like nothing could prevent her from falling apart once again, if it wasn’t for Christmas. They had everything planned out, they’d spend the evening together at their quarters, Angela and Fareeha would cook for them, and she’d decorate the tree with Hana and Lucio. Then they’d sit in the living room and open their presents, celebrate together, enjoy this one night where they could simply rest, without having to worry about tomorrow.

And maybe she could even sneak out for a moment, just to meet with her. Nobody would notice. They’d have just this moment together.

She didnt ask for much, and still, even this one night she couldnt have.

Talon attacked their headquarters a few days ago, and they werent ready to withstand another push. They didnt last long, and although Talon didnt manage to pass through their forces, they managed to damage them deeply enough for them to draw back. Many had been injured and, obviously, Christmas Eve had been cancelled, most of them needing more than a few days of rest to get back on feet.

Yet, Lena hadn’t been touched a single time. How come ? Just to think about it made her hate herself even more, and that was probably the reason why she decided to invade Talon’s lair, all on her own, on December 24th. That day, something had kept her from fighting alongside her friends, and that something was the reason why they lost.

Her hands were buried in the snow, she was sitting there, on the ground, staring at the bloody stains she left after falling. All she could see was a pair of eyes, golden, piercing through the night, through her mind, she shook her head. She couldnt let her distract her again.

Sneaking into their headquarters wasnt easy, but it wasn’t something Lena “Tracer” Oxton couldn’t do. Once she had found her way into what seemed to be Sombra’s quarters, she’d started looking around for whatever she could find that’d help her and her friends put an end to Talon, once and for all. Obviously, she didnt find anything, which she should’ve expected, knowing the hacker. It was hard for her to admit that the sole reason of her presence here tonight was the fact that she felt guilty for what happened to her team, and she somehow thought that coming to this place and trying to take down the whole Talon organization on her own would be a good idea, and maybe it would work.

But god knows it was the stupidest idea she’d ever had.

She realized that the moment she heard his voice. “You’re gonna regret this.” She turned around, seeing nothing but a tall shadow standing in the doorway, and before the thought of running away hit her mind, he pulled his shotguns out and shot her in the shoulder.

And thats how she ended up here, lying on the cold ground, panting, tears slowly streaming down her face as she was trying to recollect herself. She never should’ve gone there on her own, she didnt even know what she was expecting from this. When her friends will learn what she tried to do tonight, they’ll most definitely be the ones to kill her, if Gabriel didn’t already finish the job until then. Thats why she stood up, stumbling around for a second before she started to run again, until she got a sight of the right building, which made her let out a relieved sigh. She slowed down, knowing he wouldn’t have followed her that far anyway, and she entered the building, climbing the stairs until she got to the 6th floor. Lena opened the door, a mixture of sweat, blood and melted snow dripping down her face as she entered her apartment. She took a second to close the door, locking it, before she let herself fall against the dark wood, slowly gliding to the ground, grunting from the pain.

“Qu’est ce que-…”

Lena jumped, flicking her head in the direction of the voice. She was there. Standing in front of the patio door, her long, dark hair framing the face she was so scared to see again. She was used to those golden eyes, piercing through her every single time she looked at her - this time, it was different. There was nothing piercing to her gaze, actually, it almost showed something like… concern.

“Chérie what happened to you ?” It looked like she didnt dare to move.

“Fuck off… I dont want you here.” she mumbled, lowering her glance, knowing that those golden eyes would make her change her mind if they just as much as stared at her the right way. Silence filled the room, heavy on her shoulders.

“Those are some very rude words coming out of such a sweet mouth.” She barely heard her approaching, Amélie was just like a cat ; she moved gracefully, her footsteps were light on the wooden ground, her tall silhouette was ripping through the banality of her corridor.

“Please, just- just get out, alright ? I’m not in the mood to play.” she sighed, grimacing as she tried to stand up. She could feel her heart race both in her chest and her open shoulder, it almost hurt, and she could feel how the world around her started to get dizzy.

“Je ne suis pas là pour jouer ce soir, chérie” she heard, before her vision started to become blurry, her eyes slowly shutting down, and her head hitting the door once again. The last thing she saw was the silhouette she loved so much growing closer to her, kneeling down next to her bruised self, and only her eyes were glowing that night.

Amélie and her had this little… game, they loved to play. Nobody knew about it, and nobody would ever know about it, for it was their little secret. Something they shared for quite a while now, and although it was so wrong for them to do that, it was one of the very few moments were everything just… felt right. Talon’s elite sniper was also Talon’s eyes, going from town to town, watching them, following them, when they think nothing can get to them. She spent enough time watching every Overwatch agent, one after the other, through their every day life, and mostly, following them to their places, taking notes of everything that could be important and help them to bring this sickening organization down, once and for all. She did it with Angela, Lucio, Hana, 76, even Reinhardt (it was probably one of the most boring moments in her life, the old man just sat down on his couch and watched those stupid games only elderly people watched on their TV, and most of the time he’d just fall asleep during the first ad break). Then, she started watching Lena. Something about her pattern intrigued the french agent, every day was different, unlike everyone else, she couldnt put a finger on her habits, for she didnt have any. At least, that was what she thought. In reality, Lena had noticed from the very beginning that she was being watched, and used the Widow’s confidence to get around her and find her hiding spots. Until one day, where she confronted her. They fought, and fought, and fought, yet, bullets barely touched their moving bodies, as if they were dancing past each other. And then, it became an habit. Their meetings, their fights. Somehow, both of them needed that, as if they were enjoying every second of it, which they were. None of them knew exactly what brought them together, maybe they were just clinging onto old memories, maybe they were trying to forget them, but still, they met, every other night, on that same roof top, and fought. Some people get to know each other over some coffee, and them ? They fought, danced through the night, and left each other with the biggest smile spread onto their faces. One day, though, a too-well placed shot hit Lena right in the leg, leaving her vulnerable to the enemy sniper. She knew it was just a matter of time before she’d take advantage of the situation to get rid of one of Overwatch’s most efficient troublemaker. After all, the Amélie she once knew was no longer here, replaced by this emotionless silhouette she couldn’t help but admire. Her cold gaze was piercing right through her as she saw her raise the murderous weapon, scope in, Lena closed her eyes and thought to herself, maybe she’ll wake up, maybe none of this ever happened and she was still fighting the demons inside her head, pushing her to think that somewhere inside the Widow’s body, there was still a heart. She heard the shot, her ears were buzzing loudly and she collapsed, pain taking over her body, or at least that was what she thought. As she opened her eyes, she saw her come closer, holding out her hand.

To this day she still didnt know why Amélie didnt kill her, why she decided to save her instead, bringing her back to her place and taking care of the wound she had left on her leg. After that, she came by every other day, after midnight, to check on her ; changing her bandaid, bringing her some food, taking care of her, everything the old Amélie would do. Lena did all the talking, trying to find out what she was doing here, why she didnt shoot, what pushed her to do the right thing, but she never got any answer out of the woman, instead, she’d just nod, and say a few words in french Lena didnt manage to grasp. After her condition improved, Amélie’s visits slowly decreased in number, but she still passed by once in a while, just to listen to the girl while she talked about her day. Somehow, with everything that had happened between them, Lena felt like she could trust her. After all, she could’ve killed her that day, and still, she didnt. She wouldnt call it a bond, or maybe she did - there was definitely something odd about them but she figured, as long as it went like this, she‘d enjoy every single moment.

On the battlefield, she usually heard a distinct shot, which wouldn’t touch anybody - instead, it was like a signal, and she took advantage of the mess created by the fight to sneak around the enemy frontlines, to find her way to the snipers spot. Nobody knew about the little game both of them liked to play, they teased each other without giving too much of themselves away, and it was fine like that. It lasted a while, until a few days ago ; they were on their rooftop, again, Lena was sitting on the very edge of the building, staring at the orange sky, and the sun disappearing behind the stone jungle in front of her. Amélie was resting against the wall, behind her. They did this a lot, they didnt talk, they just stared at the sky, and it was already enough. “I’ll never get tired of this, y’know” she whispered. At this exact moment, Overwatch’s headquarters were being attacked by Talon’s members, and Lena wasn’t there to defend it.

It was the last time they saw each other ever since.

“Chérie, tu devrais faire plus attention à toi” was the first thing she heard when she woke up. She felt the soft mattress of her bed under her body, and even softer fingers brushing against her forehead, making her shiver. Her skull still hurt, and so did her shoulder, but she noticed how she couldnt move that well, and felt the bandages on her skin. Frowning, she opened her eyes, meeting with this golden gaze she feared so much. If she didnt know any better, she’d probably think it was concern that shined in her eyes.

“What are you still doing here ? I told you to leave.” she mumbled, trying to sit up but her entire body started to scream at her in pain, and Amélie softly pushed her back into the many pillows displayed on her bed.

“What were you thinking ?” there wasn’t a hint of anger in her voice, instead, it felt like she was genuinely concerned.

“I dont know. I had to do something.” Lena sighed, closing her eyes again, not wanting to get another glance of the Widow’s face.

“No you didn’t. You were just being stupid.” She had always loved the accent she had when she was speaking, it made every word sound much softer, which made her even more dangerous than she already was. But this time, it was different.

“I know what you’re thinking, Lena. You wouldn’t have made a difference, believe me.”

She opened her eyes again, shaken by the sudden anger that filled her mind after those words hit her ears.

“Are you fucking kidding me ?! What is wrong with you ? Of course i would’ve made a difference, we lost because of me !”

Amélie shook her head, leaning back, her hands resting on her lap.

“You are being stupid, ma chérie. Don’t underestimate Talon, they would’ve hurt you if you’d been there. You should thank me.”

Suddenly, silence filled the room. It felt like it lasted an eternity, before she finally gathered the strength to sit up, grimacing from the pain, before she looked her straight in the eyes.

“You knew. You knew, didn’t you ?”

Again, silence. They stared at each other, both of them were waiting for the other to break the silence.

She finally nodded.

“You… Why did you do that ? I… I could’ve been there, i could’ve helped them..!” Slowly the realization hit her, she didnt know if it was the pain, or the fact that she had been tricked by the one person she really trusted, but tears started to stream down her face, dripping down her chin, wetting her sheets.

“It is not what it looks like. You don’t understand.”

Lena shook her head, brushing her hands against her cheeks.

“Then what is it ?! What is it, tell me !”

Another silence.

“TELL ME!”

Amélie stood up, without a word, and left the room, closing the bedroom door behind her.

She couldnt believe it.

“I trusted you !” she tried to shout, but her voice barely filled the room, and she was left there, wondering. How stupid could she be ? Seconds passed, it felt like hours, she stayed there, sitting on her bed, her mind suddenly as empty as her bedroom, she barely reacted when the door opened again. Amélie walked in, holding the door open.

“Please. Just come.”

She knew she shouldn’t follow her, she knew she shouldn’t trust her, but her bruised body still managed to get out of bed, slowly walking forward, using the wall as a support. The tall woman reached out and grabbed her hand, helping her as much as she could, gently holding her so she wouldn’t lose her balance. As she walked into the living room, Lena’s eyes started watering. She didnt recognize her apartment anymore ; next to the tv was a small pine tree, bloody red baubles hanging down its branches, decorated with tinsels and little light bubbles. She could barely hear the soft music in the background, there was a box sitting on the small table in front of the couch, wrapped in a beautiful red paper, snowflakes shining on it. She just stood there, in awe, unable to say anything.

“Come.” she heard, and Amélie pulled on her hand, bringing her to the couch, making her sit down before taking a place next to her. Her cold hands were still wrapped around hers, and she was glancing at her someway she never did before.

“Yes, i knew. I didn’t want you to get hurt so i kept you with me.“

Before she managed to say something, Amélie continued.

“I know this… Christmas party was important to you. I’m sorry.” She knew she wasn’t really sorry about what happened to her friends, after all, they had always been enemies, she probably celebrated their victory later on that day. But still, something about her was so different tonight, she couldn’t help but think that all of this was sincere.

“You have every right to be mad at me. I understand. But keep in mind that i did it to protect you.”

She finally gathered the courage to answer.

“Why would you even do that ?”

Amélie stared at her for what felt like an eternity, before she grew closer to the girl, her grip slightly tightening on her hands as their lips met in what seemed to be the most cruel, and beautiful kiss she could ever dream of. She hated how much she enjoyed it, how every inch of anger had immediately been replaced by nothing but this soothing feeling tightening her chest. Her cheeks were burning as their lips finally parted, she tried to remain calm but her heavy breath betrayed her.

“You can’t do that…” she whispered, but Amélie’s fingers met with her cheeks, brushing softly against her skin before she slowly pulled her back into another kiss, much softer this time. As they parted again, Lena tried to say something but she cut her off.

“S’il te plait. Fais moi confiance.”

She didn’t know what she just said, but she suddenly stopped caring, and as leaned forward to kiss her again, it was almost as if she couldn’t feel the pain in her shoulder anymore, as if she finally found the bandaid she needed.

“Let me make it up to you.” she felt her cold breath against her lips as she spoke, hypnotized, she tried to be mad but she wasn’t, she couldn’t. Instead, she felt how her heart was racing inside her chest, almost as if it was trying to free itself from its ribcage, trying to meet with hers. She nodded, leaning into another kiss, before Amélie pulled back, wearing a very subtle smile.

“Here.”

Lena frowned, reaching for the gift she was handing her, wondering.

“I… I dont know, wh-“

“Just open it.”

She waited a second, hesitating, before carefully ripping the paper off, revealing a simple white box. She opened it, and her eyes started watering again.

“You…”

She remembered it. It was years ago, they were sitting there, at a table inside of Gérard’s little castle, Amélie was looking through some magazines while talking to Lena about french fashion. “We french ladies know how to dress. We have the best ‘couturiers’ in the world, believe me.” They used to hang out a lot, talking about everything and nothing at the same time. She loved spending time with Amélie, simply hearing her brag about french fashion was enough to make her happy. She leaned over to look at the magazine she was holding, suddenly shouting. “Oh my god !” She pointed at a jacket, aviator style, made of brown leather and wool, eyes shining in excitement. “That’s the jacket I’ve always wanted !” Amélie just laughed. “See ? French fashion is the best. Maybe you’ll get it for Christmas, who knows ?”

A few months later, Amélie shot her husband right in the head.

They never made it to Christmas.

She took the jacket out of the box, her fingers gliding across the soft leather. She remembered.

“Joyeux Noël, chérie.”

“Je t’aime”
