NHAI targets monetisation of 2,741 km highway stretches in FY'25

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has identified 33 highway stretches spanning 2,741 kilometer for monetisation during the current financial year. These stretches encompass Lucknow-Aligarh, Kanpur-Ayodhya-Gorakhpur, and Bareilly-Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh; Gurugram-Kotputli-Jaipur bypass and Jaipur-Kishangarh in Rajasthan; Panikoili-Rimuli in Odisha; Chennai bypass in Tamil Nadu; and Muzaffarpur-Darbhanga-Purnia highway in Bihar. In the fiscal year 2023-24, NHAI raised Rs 40,314 crore through various asset monetisation methods, exceeding the target of Rs 28,868 crore. NHAI's total asset monetisation has crossed Rs 1 lakh crore to date. The Ministry of Road, Transport, and Highways (MoRTH) raised Rs 32,855 crore in 2022-23 through various modes of asset monetisation. MoRTH monetises its assets under three modes: toll-operate-transfer (TOT) model, Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT), and project-based financing, providing all categories of investors an opportunity to invest in highways and associated infrastructure. All About Ayodhya’s Maharishi Valmiki International Airport

The Union Cabinet's approval to declare the Ayodhya Airport as an international airport, named Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhyadham, marks a significant development for the region. The Ayodhya Airport, officially known as the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport Ayodhya Dham, is the fifth airport in Uttar Pradesh, making it the only state in India with five international airports. The project, built under the Regional Connectivity Scheme, Phase-1, has an estimated cost of Rs 1,450 crore. Located 8 km from the Ram Temple, along the Gorakhpur-Lucknow National Highway, the airport boasts an IATA code of AYJ and a pin code of 224123. The airport project is executed in three phases, covering an area of 821 acres, with construction undertaken by the Airport Authority of India (AAI).

In the first phase, a 65,000-square-foot terminal is under construction, capable of handling two to three flights per hour. The 2200-metre runway is designed to accommodate larger aircraft like Boeing 737, Airbus 319, and Airbus 320. The second phase will see the terminal expand to 5 lakh square feet, with the runway extending to 3700 metres, enabling direct international flights to Ayodhya.

 Bangalore-based Vishal Infrastructure secured the bid for runway construction, with a design inspired by the Nagara style of architecture, reminiscent of the Ram temple. The airport aims to create a sense of spirituality and connection to the city's heritage.

 The new terminal, spanning 6,000 sqm, is designed to serve 300 passengers during peak hours, with an annual capacity of 6 lakh passengers. The first terminal is expected to be operational by the end of 2023, with the remaining three terminals completed by 2025.

 Facilities at the airport include a baggage handling system, passenger boarding bridges, flight information displays, sewage treatment, fire-fighting systems, security equipment, restaurants, educational facilities, post and telegraph, power supply, medical facilities, and drinking water facilities.

 The Ayodhya Airport's impact extends beyond aviation, with the detailed project report highlighting its potential to generate direct and indirect economic value. The airport is expected to boost employment and promote tourism, trade, and commerce, contributing to overall economic growth in the region.

UP fast-tracks expressway projects to create jobs for returning migrants

The Uttar Pradesh government will raise bank loans totalling Rs 9,275 crore to part fund two mega expressway projects.

The two infrastructure projects – Bundelkhand Expressway and Gorakhpur Link Expressway – are estimated to cost Rs 15,000 crore and Rs 4,600 crore, respectively.

According to UP Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) CEO and state additional chief secretary Awanish Kumar Awasthi, the expressway projects will play a major role in boosting the local economy and generate employment for the migrant labourers returning from other states.

Following covid-19 lockdown in March 2020, the work on these projects had come to a standstill. However, the work resumed last month in all such pending projects, also including Purvanchal Expressway, which is estimated to cost nearly Rs 23,000 crore.

Chairing a review meeting here, Awasthi recently asked the commercial banks to expedite the process of approval to the bank loan proposal submitted by UPEIDA, the nodal agency for the expressways.

Meanwhile, Bank of Baroda has approved bank loan worth Rs 2,000 crore for the Bundelkhand Expressway project, while the process of forming a consortium of banks was underway.

Besides, Rs 700 crore worth of loan has also been sanctioned by the Union Bank of India, and the commercial banks are now in the process of granting sanction to the remaining portion of the loans worth Rs 6,575 crore.

On February 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation of 296 km Bundelkhand Expressway at a village in Chitrakoot district and observed the development of UP depended upon connectivity and that the Yogi Adityanath government was working at the speed of expressways, obliquely referring to the mega expressways.

Bundelkhand Expressway will link Chitrakoot, Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Jalaun, Auraiya and Etawah districts. Last year, the state had awarded the six packages of the Expressway to the selected bidders, including Apco Infratech, Ashoka Buildcon, Gawar Construction and Dilip Buildcon.

So far, UPEIDA has acquired a major portion of the required 3,641 hectares for the project. It will connect Bundelkhand with the national capital region (NCR) via Agra-Lucknow and Yamuna expressways. The project would start near Bharatkoop at Jhansi-Allahabad National Highway (NH) 35 in Chitrakoot district and terminate near village Kudrail, Etawah on Agra-Lucknow Expressway.
