Penrole AU where Goose and Carole get divorved and Carole moves to a beach house. She opens a cafe and gets up early each morning to bake bread and pastry. This is when she notices a lovely blonde surfer shaking off her hair that's glimmering in the sunrise as water droplets fall from it.
It's safe to say she's smitten.
This routine happens. Carole bakes bread and leaves it outside to prove. Surfer girl shakes off her hair and has Carole wondering if mermaids are real.
Until Bradley, the innocent little four year old that he is, suggests she just talks to her. She splutters but Bradley gives her a fresh pastry on a plate and points to the smoothie maker.
So, she makes mystery surfer girl a green smoothie and takes her a fresh pastry as she catches her breath on the steps to the porch of Carole’s deck.
At first she thinks she's here to tell her to get off, but is happy to get some of the food her mouth has been watering just looking at. Not to mention the smell of freshly baked bread.
Carole finds out she’s called Penny and tells her that they're on the house.
Penny comes in the next day, and the day after, and the day after. Bradley keeps dropping hints as to when Carole's free. He ends up telling her he's having a sleep over Thursday so she's free, she likes Italian food and sunflowers.
They go. Penny's insecure in heels as she's tall. Carole loves it.
Penny learns of the divorce. How a year before, Carole almost lost Goose in an accident at top gun. He got better, became a top gun instructor but it took her a while to move out to Miramar. When she did go out there, she fully lost him. She saw Goose and Slider kissing and found out that they've kind of been a thing since before his accident. Everyone else assumed she knew and turned a blind eye. They had a screaming match, Carole delivered divorce papers a little while later and went back home until she realised she didn't want to stay in a house full of a broken memories and moved away once the divorce was finalised.
Penny says she’s sorry. Carole takes a long drink of her wine and says she’s not to blame and they're not going to mention him.
She finds out Penny was a pro surfer who went all over the world. Then her dad got sick and she had to drop everything to look after him. Maybe her dad was a fisherman instead of in the Navy. Also yes this is kind of like Nani from Lilo & Stitch.
Surfing in the morning is her only time of peace. Just her and the waves. The sun dancing on the water. She's finally in control again, able to take time for herself.
Carole kisses her cheek when she drops her off.
Bradley tells Penny the next day not to hurt his Momma.
There's typical romcom stuff. Carole piping something when Penny, helping with opening up, starts kneading bread in a vest top. The icing goes all over the counter as she ogles her.
Penny helps her with deliveries. They make soup together.
Then Goose comes to spend some time with Bradley on leave and Carole cold front goes straight up to prove something to him. Goose kinda knows it's a front and kinda doesn't so awkwardly talks about how life's been as an instructor at top gun.
But it's agony for Carole, hearing him get everything he's wanted, that they wanted, while she had to build everything up again. And Penny can see this and tries to break through this new front but can't.
This and her dad taking a turn for the worst means they snap at each other. Penny's dad ends up in hospital and Penny goes surfing at dusk in bad weather.
Carole sees her surfboard wash up on the shore and runs out in the storm. She finds her not breathing. She tries CPR and screams at Goose (who's there for Bradley) to call an ambulance.
Goose guesses who Penny is. Bradley tells him that Penny makes her happy. He says "Momma's smiling again" and that's that

All sorts of crap
Advent Calendar Day 16! (prompts by @raven-cincaide-words) Today’s prompts: First Christmas | Strangers to More | Little Touches Fandom: House - Pairing: Hilson 1.2k[Ao3]
Wilson answered the knocking on his apartment door, ready to greet carolers or maybe a confused Jehovah's witness. Because who else would be at his door on Christmas Day?
“I don't smell ham so you must be either making the customary Christmas goose, or else you're a really shitty host.”
“What- House?”
The tall scruffy man shoved past Wilson into his apartment, looking around without a hint of shame. “What, no guess? I thought I'd at least get the chance to meet your mother. What kind of nice boy like you doesn't even see their mother on Christmas?”
“The Jewish kind,” Wilson answered automatically. “Hanukkah was at the beginning of the month this year.”
House snapped his fingers, pointing meaningfully at Wilson, an amused smile tilting his lips.
“I should have known,” he lamented, “You do kind of give off the stink of a nice Jewish boy from Bergen County.”
“Not sure that the stink is Judaism. That might just be the smell of New Jersey.”
House laughed, delightedly, clapping Wilson on the shoulder before making his way into Wilson's sitting room. Wilson watched helplessly as this man he’d only met once made himself at home on his sofa.
Wilson had met House in New Orleans 3 months ago. House had bailed him out of jail and told him he was the most interesting person at the conference. Wilson had thought House was hitting on him at first, and he was just messed up enough about Sam's divorce papers that he was going to take him up on it. But, against all odds, House genuinely did just think he was interesting. He wanted Wilson's company, not just to fuck him. Which was weird, but Wilson wasn't exactly in the business of turning down friends.
So he and House had parted ways friends. House back to Maryland and Wilson back to his residency in Philadelphia. They'd exchange numbers, and over the last three months had spoken on the phone no less than twice a week. Even when Wilson didn’t have time to talk, it wasn't uncommon for him to return to his apartment after a long and harrowing shift at the hospital to find a long and comforting voicemail from House, just rambling on about whatever had annoyed him that day. Wilson had told house his home address so House could send him a holiday card.
Except now Wilson realized that he would not be receiving any such holiday card. House instead decided to deliver himself.
Wilson laughed helplessly, following House into his sitting room.
“Well, you're insane, but I guess I did know that going in.” He sighed, lowering himself into his armchair. “How have you been? I haven't seen you since New Orleans. You look good.”
“Stop flirting with me,” House said. “Or at least cut the small talk, the flirting is can stay. Just don’t make it boring.”
Wilson huffed, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. “Alright. Then what are you doing here instead of with your family for the holidays?”
“In my house, we celebrate Kwanzaa.”
“Or you just hate your parents. Is this how I find out there will be trouble with the in-laws?”
House smirked. “See? Isn't it much better to flirt without the small talk?”
Wilson rolled his eyes. “Deflection means yes, but it's Christmas so I'm not going to push it.”
“Pussy.”
“Hey if you want me to push, I can push.”
“Oh, I want you to push, just let me get into position.”
Wilson rolled his eyes again but laughed, pulling himself up out of his chair with a slight groan.
“Well, if I'm hosting my new friend for Christmas – a holiday I don't even celebrate – then I will be getting drunk. Whiskey?”
House hummed in affirmation, his eyes moving over Wilson as he passed stood. Wilson brushed his hand along Houses shoulder as he passed, feeling his light shutter under his fingers. If House was allowing flirting, this was probably also allowed.
He pulled out his nice tumblers, the ones that his older brother had got him for his college graduation. He hadn't really had a chance to use them yet: Sam didn't like whiskey, and he and his friends from college kind of lost touch in his last year, when he and Sam were married.
He couldn't think of a better time to break them in.
He poured two fingers of the whiskey he had on hand in each glass. It wasn't very good whiskey – he was a medical resident with debilitating loans. And he couldn't justify the expense on a liquor he only drank sadly by himself in his apartment. But this was the whiskey he had, so it wasn’t like House could complain.
“Yuegh!” House pulled a face like Wilson had poisoned him. “Why are you drinking this swill? You're a hot shot oncology Wonderboy. None of your patients have given you really good whiskey?”
Wilson frowned, pausing at the arm of the couch.
“I'm not sure it's appropriate for patients to give their doctors substances that might impair their judgment.”
House snorted. “I bet you a hundred bucks that within your first year as an attending, one of your rapturously grateful old baldies will give you a bottle of at least three hundred dollar Scotch.”
Wilson hummed. “Yeah, I'll take that bet. If I win, I get a hundred bucks. And if I lose, I get a three hundred dollar bottle of Scotch.”
“Well, part of my winning includes you pouring the first class for me, of course.” House pulled another face at his glass. “To make up for the garbage you're giving me now.”
Wilson laughed, lowering himself onto the couch next to House and taking his own sip of the perfectly adequate whiskey. “Yeah, House. I'll share it with you.”
He didn't tell House that he was the only one Wilson had to drink with, anyway. That, even if Wilson did have someone else, it was House's company he wanted. He pressed his shoulder against House’s and didn’t tell him that they hadn’t known each other long, House was probably the best friend he’s ever had.
He didn't say this, but House seemed to hear it anyway.
“Visiting Philadelphia has many benefits,” House proclaimed, grandly, his warm leg pressing against Wilson’s. “I've always wanted to see The Franklin Institute. I've heard tell of Pennsylvania Dutch pastries. Coming here means I get to avoid my parents for the holiday by telling them I had to visit my poor distressed friend Wilson who was spending his first Christmas divorced from his wife in destitute misery.” He waved his hand as if to brush off this last one. “Maybe I’ll make you take me to the museum.”
Wilson’s heart pinched, unable to stop the soft smile that took over his face,
“I’ll take you to Reading Terminal tomorrow,” Wilson promised, laying a hand on House’s knee. “If we’re getting Pennsylvania Dutch, you have to try a whoopie pie.”

What is L-O-V-E? (Part 3) - Hangman
Pairing: Hangman / Bradshaw!Fem!OC (Lena) (Ex-Wife!OC)
Word Count: 3.9k
Warnings: Divorce and Separation; Angst; References to Child Custody Agreements; Arguing; Almost Physical Fights; Brief Reference to Cancer (Carole); References to Goose and Carole's Deaths; Female Bradshaw OC (Lena) and Named Son OC (Nickie)
This work, all of my works, and my entire blog is 18+ Only!
Summary: Tension comes to a head between Hangman and Rooster. Maverick gets involved. Lena gets trapped in memories of the past.
Master List
Part 1 Part 2
Jake was naturally an early riser and being in the Navy since he was eighteen only increased that tendency. Waking up before his alarm, Jake cracked his eyes open and let out a sigh as he stretched his back.
Nickie was drooling onto Jake’s shirt, absolutely knocked out, and happily curled up into his dad’s side. Jake was about to reach up to try and clean up some of the drool when he realized that his arm was somewhat immobilized. Looking over towards Lena’s side of the bed, Jake found her arm wrapped around his own with her lips brushing against the skin of his shoulder.
Taking in the arrangement for a moment, Jake simply sunk into bed and enjoyed the arrangement. The last time that he woke up to any sleeping situation that was remotely like this one was before Lena divorced him. Probably by a couple weeks, if not months. And Jake could really get used to waking up like this in the morning. He really could.
But, unfortunately, he still had to go to work.
Jake started by carefully lifting his arm away from Lena, who let go relatively easy. She shifted a bit, but remained asleep. And now came the harder part of the job—getting Nickie off of him without waking him up. Carefully shifting Nickie over, Jake rolled his son onto his side. Nickie let out a noise, but quickly found the warmth from his mom and shifted over.
With his family settled, Jake slipped out of bed and stood up. Grabbing his phone, Jake prepared to head over to the guest bedroom to dress for work. Looking back at Nickie and Lena for a moment, Jake paused and returned to the bed. Careful of his weight, Jake leaned over a pressed a kiss to Nickie’s forehead. He gently brushed his fingers over Lena’s hand before heading out.
Jake changed into his uniform and was about to head out the door when he glanced back at Lena’s bedroom. Jake stared at Lena and Nickie as they cuddled in the warmth of deep sleep for a moment. He took a quick look at his watch before walking into Lena’s office to grab two pieces of paper from the printer.
~~~~~
Lena woke up to her alarm going off. Reaching blindly for it, Lena paused for a second when she felt her hand press down on some folded paper. She managed to turn off her alarm before it woke up Nickie and pulled the piece of paper closer to inspect it. Squinting her eyes, Lena realized that it was a paper airplane.
Where the hell did that come from?
Lena slowly unfolded the pages of paper to reveal a letter. And she immediately recognized that small and square-shaped writing style. Careful to not wake up Nickie, Lena sat up a little bit in her bed and started reading through the note. But, of course, Nickie just seemed to sense that something was going on and started to wake up beside her.
“Mommy?” Nickie called, rubbing his eyes in that distinctly toddler way. “What’s that?”
“It’s a letter. From your dad,” Lena replied, brushing Nickie’s hair with her hand and pressing a kiss to the top of his head in greeting. “He had to go because of work.”
“When’s he coming home?” Nickie asked, starting to sit up.
“He didn’t say. He might be late, though. Apparently, they’re doing a lot of training today,” Lena explained to Nickie, setting aside the letter. “He’ll probably be home after dinner.”
“Okay,” Nickie sighed, sleepily leaning on his mom.
“Go back to bed, sweetheart. You’ve got an hour before you have to be up,” Lena replied with a light chuckle, rubbing her son’s back.
~~~~~
Jake was growing increasingly annoyed with his fellow squad members and their inability to adapt to the mission. Was the whole thing absolutely batshit? Yes. Was Maverick’s plan also absolutely batshit? Yes. But a mission was a mission. And Jake had every intention of getting the job done and coming back home in one piece.
And Rooster was really starting to piss him off beyond their normal level of contention.
Jake and Bradley had never really gotten along. Not before Jake started dating Lena. Definitely not while he was dating her. And not even when Jake married her and they had Nickie together. There was a brief period of compromise when Lena was sent for extra testing to see if she had the same disease that took Carole. But when all the tests came back normal, it was right back to fighting over everything.
And today was going to be no different.
Jake’s jaw ticked every single time that Rooster acted all high and mighty. Like a protector for the rest of the Dagger Squad as if they all weren’t grown ass adults who would have never made it this far in their careers if they couldn’t hold their own.
The only person that Rooster cared about was himself. He claimed to fight for the greater good, but he always had selfish intentions behind it. Rooster inserted himself into Lena and Jake’s marriage to ‘protect’ his little sister, even though Lena told him that she had it handled multiple times. He inserted himself into Nickie’s life, trying to be the father that Nickie already had. As if Jake wouldn’t have taken a bullet for either Lena or Nickie without even a second thought.
And now, Rooster was using that same façade to try and hide his personal vendetta against Maverick from the rest of the squad. Rooster wasn’t pushing back against Maverick because he cared about his fellow aviators. Rooster pushed back against Maverick because he wanted to prove Maverick wrong. To prove to Maverick that he was good enough. And Jake was sick of it.
“Why’re you dead? You’re team leader up there. Why are you, why is your team, dead?” Maverick demanded from Rooster, causing a small smirk to tug at Jake’s lips.
“Sir, he’s the only one who made it to the target,” Phoenix stated to Rooster’s defense.
“A minute late. He gave enemy aircraft time to shoot him down. He is dead,” Maverick insisted firmly.
“You don’t know that,” Rooster argued back.
“You’re not flying fast enough,” Jake snapped with an edge of amusement at his former brother-in-law. “You don’t have a second to waste.”
“We made it to the target.”
“And superior enemy aircraft intercepted you on your way out,” Maverick interjected, causing Rooster to whip around to face him.
“Then it’s a dogfight.”
“Against fifth generation fighters,” Maverick pointed out harshly.
“Yeah, we’d still have a chance.”
“In an F-18!”
“It’s not the plane, sir. It’s the pilot,” Rooster replied, a bit smugly.
“Exactly!” Maverick shouted.
A moment of silence passed while Rooster tried to respond and not lose his shit while doing it.
“There’s more than one way to fly this mission,” Rooster finally choked out, his voice breaking slightly.
“You really don’t get it,” Hangman drawled, his Texas twang coming out more. Lena always used to say that she could tell when he was either really annoyed or really happy based on how thick his accent came out. And he certainly wasn’t happy right now. “On this mission, a man flies like Maverick here, or a man does not come back.”
Hangman turned to Phoenix across the way and a smirk wormed its way back onto his lips. He and Phoenix had always been rivals from the second that they met. And hell, Jake did owe her one for keeping Rooster in check during his wedding to Lena. But right now? She was just another part of Jake’s deep-seated frustration with Rooster.
“No offense intended,” he stated, causing Phoenix to tilt her chin up.
“Yet somehow, you always manage,” Bob spoke up to his pilot’s defense.
“Look, I don’t mean to criticize. You’re conservative, that’s all,” Hangman continued, turning to face the front of the hangar again.
“Lieutenant,” Maverick warned, staring Jake down.
“We’re going into combat, son. On a a level no living pilot’s ever seen.”
It was then that Jake set his sights on the other man that he blamed for getting inside Lena’s head about their marriage—Maverick. He wasn’t nearly as vocal as Rooster was about his disapproval of their relationship. It was in the subtle stares that said something along the lines of ‘why did Lena pick you?’ that grated on his nerves. And the subtle digs about his skills as a pilot, since Maverick had access to all of those records.
So, in Hangman’s book, Maverick wasn’t exactly a friend when it came to his relationship with Lena.
“. . . Not even him,” Hangman continued, staring straight into Maverick’s soul.
Maverick frowned and turned back to Jake, but Jake was already turning to Rooster. And perhaps Jake was dramatic and perhaps he held a grudge and perhaps he needed to look inside himself a little bit more, but in that moment, Hangman was living out about seven years of built-up frustration with both Rooster and Maverick.
“That’s no time to be thinking about the past,” Hangman drawled calmly.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Rooster demanded defensively, turning to glare at Hangman.
“Rooster,” Maverick warned, hoping to avoid a fight.
“I don’t think that you want to start a conversation with me about the past, Hangman,” Rooster spat, which made the smirk drop from Jake’s face.
Sensing the tension building, the Dagger Squad members who had no idea what was going on shared confused, but nervous looks. Coyote and Phoenix locked eyes, both on the edge of their seats because they both knew just what history Rooster was threatening to talk about. Hangman’s dig had been vague, but that feral glare on Rooster’s face was sign of only one particular history.
Lena. Lena and Nickie.
And as soon as they got brought up, it was going to go nuke in that hangar.
“Right, because you always know best, don’t you, Rooster?” Hangman growled, deep in his chest.
“I know better than you,” Rooster snapped back.
“You would have stayed the fuck out of it if you knew better,” Hangman retorted, glaring straight into Rooster’s soul. “Worry about your own problems, Bradshaw.”
“Lieutenants!” Maverick demanded, trying to get their attention.
“It’s not like you were going to take care of them anyways, Seresin.”
That just seemed to uncork the years of pent-up frustration. All of the complaints and comments that Jake just swallowed down to keep the peace came bursting out. But, hell, between the mission and the fact that a life with Lena and Nickie by his side was dangled right in front of him the night before, Hangman snapped. And Rooster was right there with him.
The other Dagger Squad members leapt to their feet the second that Hangman and Rooster got to their feet. People were shouting and there was a lot of attempts to get in between Rooster and Hangman. Even Maverick and Hondo got involved. Coyote, Payback, and Maverick dragged Jake away from swinging at Rooster, who was just as pissed.
“Stay the fuck away from my son!” Jake snapped at Rooster, still fighting against the holds on him.
“Like hell I will!” Bradley growled back, just as pissed.
“You don’t think that I realize what the fuck you’re trying to do!?” Jake yelled back, trying to push forward. “Trying to turn him against me!? Turning Lena against me wasn’t enough for you!?”
“You did that yourself!”
“Fuck you, Bradshaw!”
“You were never there for her!”
“Yes, I was! You just refused to see it!”
“I protected my family!”
“They’re my family!”
“ENOUGH!”
The entire hangar quite literally shook from Maverick’s bellow. Everyone kept a tight hold on Rooster and Hangman, but there was a subtle draw of attention to Maverick. The captain glanced between Rooster and Hangman with a steeled expression that negated any personal affection that he held for either of them.
This wasn’t about Rooster or Hangman now. It was about Nickie, who was a little boy with more father figures that would fight to the death for him than he knew what to do with. Now, if only those father figures realized that they should be on the same team—Nickie’s team—instead of fighting among themselves like animals.
“Everyone else out. Hangman and Rooster stay,” Maverick demanded, gesturing to the exit.
He wasn’t Uncle Maverick or Ex-Father-In-Law Maverick anymore. No, he was Maverick, the man who swore to Goose to beat up any boy who caused Lena pain. And, in this case, those two boys just happened to be her older brother and her ex-husband.
And Mav wasn’t going to go easy on them. Not this time.
~~~~~
Lena walked down the hallway, letting Hondo stay a step ahead of her. She glanced nervously at the pictures on the walls and gripped her purse strap just a bit tighter. Top Gun always made her nervous. Even when Bradley and Jake graduated—separate occasions—from Top Gun, she never felt truly at ease on this base. Not with its history with the Bradshaw family.
“How bad was it?” she asked Hondo quietly, causing the warrant officer to pause briefly.
“Let’s just say, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Maverick yell like that before.”
“And hopefully you won’t have to . . . again,” Lena added with a whisper.
“They’re in there,” Hondo stated, gesturing to the classroom.
“Thank you, Hondo,” Lena replied softly, turning to the warrant officer. “And give your wife my best.”
With a nod, Hondo disappeared down the corridor. Taking a breath, Lena reached for the door knob and stepped into the room. The classroom was lit, but somewhat dimly, casting an odd glow around the room. As if she wasn’t already on edge.
Lena spotted Bradley first, sitting with a pout and his arms crossed over his chest. He was still dressed in his flight suit and Lena was relieved to see no bruises or cuts on his face. Jake was sitting on the other side of the room. He was angrily twirling a toothpick around his mouth and leaning far back in his seat with his legs spread and a dark expression on his face. He didn’t seem to be harmed either.
Maverick was leaning at the desk at the front of the classroom, looking as serious as Lena had seen him in a long time. That was an expression that he always reserved for whenever he was well and truly angry. And Maverick only got well and truly angry when someone was doing stupid shit and putting someone else at risk.
This was going to be a fun conversation.
“Where’s Nickie?” Jake asked, breaking the seemingly deadlocked silence.
“Babysitter,” Lena replied, turning to her ex-husband. Penny, to be more specific.
Glancing around the room, Lena set her purse on a desk and folded her arms across her chest. Staring down at her shoes for a moment, Lena finally picked her head up. She turned to Jake first, trying to assess his headspace. He stared at her evenly for a moment before dropping his head. She turned next to Bradley, who stared somewhat defiantly with his chin raised.
And then Lena put two and two together.
“How many times do we have to have this conversation?” Lena sighed, glancing in between Rooster and Hangman with a tired expression.
“One more time wouldn’t hurt,” Jake stated, causing Lena to round on him.
“Jake, just because we’re divorced and just because Nickie and I live a couple hours away from you, that doesn’t mean that I’m trying to keep you from Nickie. You’re his father. And whatever happens between us, you’re going to be in his life. I want you in his life. He wants you in his life. Stop trusting what everyone else says about my opinion about that.”
Jake lowered his head again, so Lena turned to face Bradley.
“Brad, stop fighting my battles for me. If I need your help, I will ask for it. I haven’t needed you to fight my battles for me in decades. Jake and I have our problems, but they’re our problems. Not yours. Just focus on being Nickie’s fun uncle. That’s all I need from you.”
“Are you sure?” Bradley asked, like he didn’t believe her.
“See?” Jake scoffed, gesturing over to Bradley.
“I can handle my brother, thank you,” Lena stressed to Jake before turning back to Bradley. “Yes, I’m sure.” Lena paused, glancing over at the photos of the past classes of Top Gun for a moment. “I know that Mom put you in charge of me, from an age that was far earlier than fair, but I don’t need you to be that for me anymore. I’m a big girl, Brad. I can take care of myself.”
Bradley still looked like he wanted to disagree, at least when it came to dealing with Hangman, but Maverick’s stern glare caused him to keep his mouth shut. With a simple nod, Bradley got to his feet. The Bradshaw siblings shared a brief hug before Bradley took his leave, probably more than eager to escape this awkward situation.
Turning to Maverick next, Lena offered him a small smile. Maverick’s annoyed and stern expression melted after a moment and he quickly relaxed. Standing up from the desk, Maverick walked over to where Lena was standing by herself.
“I think that I can take it from here,” Lena replied, glancing over at where Jake was still sitting in his seat. Turning back to Maverick, she offered him a wider smile. “Thanks for making sure that they didn’t kill each other.”
“Anytime,” Maverick stated, though he was talking more to Jake in that moment than Lena. “You know that I’m always here if you need something.”
“I know, Mav.”
Lena pulled Maverick into an appreciative hug before Maverick excused himself from the room. Lena watched Maverick walk off until the sound of his footsteps couldn’t be heard anymore. Then she slowly turned to Jake, who was already looking at her.
“Come on,” Lena spoke softly, grabbing her bag. “I think that we have some things to talk about.”
“Let’s pick up Nickie first,” Jake stated, causing Lena to pause.
“You really want Nickie to be around when we have a fight?” Lena asked quietly, causing Jake to shake his head.
“I don’t want to fight,” Jake corrected Lena, who paused for a moment. “I want to spend one of my last nights in Miramar with my son. With my family.” When Lena did not immediately reply, Jake added, “That’s all I want.”
Lena nodded slowly before turning to head out of the room with Jake right behind her. They walked slowly down the halls. Lena briefly paused at the small plaque by the front door, which was inscribed with the names of all of the service members who died on base, at Top Gun.
Jake stopped walking in time with Lena, knowing exactly what she was looking at. Whose name she was looking for. And it wasn’t hard to find. ‘Bradshaw’ was awfully close to the top of any list that was sorted alphabetically by surname.
Lena brushed her finger over her father’s name, the name that she gave her first born son and only child, to honor the man that she didn’t even truly remember. She had only been a few months old when Goose died, but yet, she still felt such a sense of loss every time that she saw his callsign.
Jake wordlessly reached out and grabbed Lena’s hand, bringing her back to the present. Turning to Jake, Lena blinked a few times before nodding slowly and heading for the exit. She didn’t move to remove her hand from Jake’s own until she had to reach for the door.
~~~~~
“Mommy! Daddy!” Nickie called, jumping up from his seat. He trotted over to Jake, who happily scooped him up and into his arms. “You’re here!”
“What? Did you think we were leaving you here forever?” Jake asked, setting Nickie on his hip. Ruffling Nickie’s hair, Jake turned to Penny, who smiled kindly at him. “Thanks for watching him.”
“Anything for Lena,” Penny replied, glancing over at the Bradshaw woman. “And Nickie.”
“We’ll get out of your hair. Tell Amelia that I say ‘hi’,” Lena responded, shooting Penny a thankful smile.
They stepped out of Penny’s office together and into the packed Hard Deck. Jake held Nickie protectively close with his arm wrapped around his son. Offering a hand to Lena, Jake pulled them through the crowd and towards the nearest exit.
About a half an hour later, the three of them were sitting on the sand on a blanket that Lena had tucked into her car’s trunk. The takeout that they ordered had been eaten and cleaned away, save for a few wrappers to throw out on their way back to the cars.
Lena was staring out at the waves as Jake talked about the last couple of days of training—the much safer and non-government secret version—with Nickie, who was up on his back. When Nickie let out a squeal, she quickly turned to inspect him for injury. But finding Nickie simply squealing because Jake was tickling him, she found herself unable to stop smiling.
“Not fair!” Nickie screeched, giggling and curling in on himself.
Jake rolled around so that he was on his back and Nickie was sitting up on his stomach. Lena couldn’t help but think about when Nickie was seemingly impossibly smaller, just barely able to pick his head up. And how Jake would come home after a long day at work and lay with Nickie on his stomach, entertaining his son and simply enjoying the moment. Of course, that was during some of the worst months of Jake and Lena’s relationship.
Turning back to the waves, Lena closed her eyes and focused on the distant sound of crashes, trying to not get too caught up in the darker memories. Jake and Nickie seemed to settle down after a few moments because Nickie called out to her.
“Mommy, are you sleeping?”
“No,” Lena replied, smiling over at her son. Glancing down at her watch, Lena sat up. “But we should probably be getting home soon.”
They gathered their belongings and headed back for the cars. Nickie requested to ride with Jake in his truck and Lena quickly urged them on before hopping into her own car. After a quick bath, Nickie was sent to bed and passed out when his head touched his pillow.
Closing the door behind him, Jake turned to see Lena staring up at him with her arms crossed over her chest and a serious expression on her face.
“We need to talk,” Lena spoke quietly, though firmly.
Jake nodded slowly, knowing that they did indeed have a lot to discuss, and followed her down the hall.
A.N. Sorry this one took a while to get out, but if anyone's still following it, thanks for reading!

What do you think about mav actually being super hypercompetent in his every day life? Growing up in foster care forced him to figure out how to make really delicious meals, budget tightly, and be really handy about repairs early on. Whereas slider and ice are not...useless, but def inexperienced. like before they are able to figure it out, mav will swoop in and finish up whatever they are doing or demonstrate his expertise in some way. Not in a on purpose way to make them feel bad but in a hypercompetent way. Also goose and carole are in the same position as slider and ice, but a few years wiser. Bradley has caught on too and doesnt know why his parents wont just ask uncle mav to do it instead of wasting time fucking around trying to figure it out themselves.
Not my three whole paragraphs deleting :’)
I think Maverick is hypercompetent but i think it stems from more than just his childhood (although that would have a big impact) (and if we’re really going further afield, rejection sensitivity could be an influence) I think after his dad died he became financially aware very young. As an adult he simply looks at his water bill and can think of ways to decrease it by what ever % right off the top of his head. He’s also the type of guy to look at something and just…figure it out. Busted oven? Give him a manual and twenty minutes and it’ll be fixed.
It’s not that everyone else is incompetent, but regardless of salary, a dual income household changes things a lot. I HC that Slider’s parents divorced messily when he was in college and got a lot closer with his aunt. He saw the strain a on his parents after they split and how they had to adapt to being on a single income, where as his aunt (and Maverick) have had it down to a fine art for a long time. So that is to say, broken fridge? Get a repair man. They’ve got busy lives and the spare change.
So in the domestic world Maverick is highly competent because he’s been doing this sort of thing for years already. He can sew which Carol loves. But he’s also impatient so he doesn’t like teaching these skills. More often than not, instead of telling Ice that he needs to more the wrench another quarter turn, he just reached over and does it himself.
Later on in life it’s why he ends up with the P-51. To some it’s a massive project where they don’t know where to start, nor does Maverick. He just starts.
Carole’s a bit better than the other boys but feminist and traditional gender roles etc etc. Maverick gets Bradley a mechano set for his eighth birthday and teaches him about moving parts and it sets bradley on the trajectory to be a mechanic for a solid two months.
Ice has a competency kink so he really doesn’t mind when Maverick is like, really good at everything he does. At the end of it all though, there’s still a certain guilt Maverick carries. There’s no root cause, he just feels bad asking for help and is highly uncomfortable when he’s not good at something. And being the best is the exact reason he’s so arsey at TOPGUN. What do you mean “figured out who the best is” it’s obviously him.
So yes, maverick is highly competent for lots of reasons :D

You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' | Part 2
Summary: Goose meets you at the Miramar Officers’ Club and after a drink and a brief conversation he wished would never end he believes that he’ll never see you again. Little did he know while this may have been your first meeting, it would not be your last.
Warning: Swearing, boys being stupid, me knowing nothing about how radar works, Goose having some suggestive thoughts
Word Count: 2k
A/N: Goose is a leg man I will not be taking any questions on the matter. We are all imagining that Carol is living her best life somewhere far from San Diego. I love her and Goose and refuse to kill her off or have either one of them go through a divorce. Sorry not sorry to Bradley for wiping your existence from this fictional plane. Also I know nothing about planes, aviation, engineering, or the Navy, I'm just a Goose girly at heart.
《 part 1 || part 3 || part 4 || epilogue 》 《 m.list || ao3 》
Maverick and Goose stood stiff as boards against one of the joint naval offices. Goose could feel himself sweating through his khaki uniform as he listened to an irate Air Boss Johnson scream at Commander Mike ‘Viper’ Metcalf. “One of your snot-nosed jockeys did a flyby on my tower at over 400 knots! I want somebody's butt! I want it now! I've had it!”
Johnson burst through the office doors just in time to knock into a Navy boy carrying a tray of coffee. “God damn it! That's twice! I want some butts!” He screamed as he made his way down the hall.
Viper and Jester emerged from the office. Viper let out a sigh, “Well, that'll just about cover the flybys.”
Lieutenant Commander Heatherly looked over at the boys, “Follow me.”
The walk down the hall felt like miles. Nick was used to Pete’s antics, they had been flying together for years, but sometimes it felt like Mav didn’t understand what was really at stake with all this. Goose needed this, not the Top Gun trophy, if Nick was honest, he could give a fuck about the trophy, but if this went south, the two could get kicked out of Top Gun, or worse, lose their wings and be grounded.
The four walked into Commander Metcalf’s office. Metcalf grabbed a manila folder from his desk, before standing to look out his office window. Mav and Goose stood at attention in front of the commander’s desk mentally preparing for the ass-chewing they were about to receive.
“Gentlemen, you had a hell of a first day.” Viper glanced out his office window. “The hard deck for this hop was 10,000 feet. You knew it, you broke it. You followed Commander Heatherly below after he lost sight of you and called ‘no joy.’ Why?” Viper’s voice was steady and calm, too calm for Goose’s liking.
“Sir!” Mav looked straight ahead, “I had Commander Heatherly in my sights. He saw me move in for the kill. He then proceeded below the hard deck. We weren't below 10,000 for more than a few seconds. I had the shot, there was no danger, so I took it.”
God damn it, Mav…
Commander Metcalf turned towards the boys. “You took it... and broke a major rule of engagement!” The rise in his voice made Goose want to curl up and die as he watches the commander walk towards them. “Then you broke another one with that circus stunt flyby.” Viper let out a sigh as he looked back out his office window. “Lieutenant Mitchell... Top Gun rules exist for your safety and that of your team. They are not flexible, nor am l. Either obey them, or you are history. Is that clear?”
“Yes, sir!” Stated Mav, his eyes remaining focused on the window in front of him.
Metcalf took the seat in front of his desk before dismissing the young aviators.
Goose followed closely behind Maverick, closing the Commander’s office door after him. He let his hand come down a bit harder than he might have intended on the shorter pilot’s shoulder, “I really enjoyed that, Mav. Thanks a lot.” He leaned up against the wall, rubbing his eyes with the heels of his hands. “Holy shit! Maybe I could learn how to be a truck driver.” He dropped his hands and looked back at Pete. “You have the number of that driving school on TV? Truck Master, I think it is. I might need that…”
Before he could spiral any further, he was brought out of his thoughts by a voice as sweet as honey. “Lieutenant.”
The two men turned to look down the hall. Goose was greeted by a beautiful sight. His eyes widened as he took in your form, making their way from your heels that clicked on the tile floor to your stocking-clad legs that went on for miles. When they made their way to the first of your outfit, Goose couldn’t help but wish your skirt was a little shorter and there was one less button done on your blouse.
Goose shut his eyes and let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. Get it together, she’s your instructor!
As you came closer to the two-man Maverick turned to his RIO. “Okay, well,” he dusted off the shoulders of Goose’s khaki uniform. “Don’t be nervous. You look great, dear.”
“Thanks, honey.” Goose turned to you as Maverick made his way down the hall.
You couldn’t help but smile at the interaction. But quickly regained your professional composure. “That pilot of yours is quite the troublemaker. I could hear Johnson yelling from my office down the hall.”
“Mav’s not one to think before he acts. It’s bitten me in the ass more times than I would like to admit.”
“Yeah, I’ve heard about his hotshot antics. Charlie was annoyed, to say the least, after finding out that the two of you were the famous MIG insulter. Then again, judging by the back and forth with Charlie this morning, you seem to enjoy yourself at times.
“Oh, you heard all that...?” Goose looked down at his boots gently taping his foot.
“Bits and pieces to say the least,” You notice him looking everywhere but you. “Look, Charlie and I are instructors, we see 20 new hotshots every eight weeks.” If you were being honest you weren’t completely sure what you were saying. You are his instructor the last thing you should be thinking about is flirting with one of your students, let alone thinking about how good he looks in that khaki uniform. “That being said…”
Goose couldn’t bring himself to look up from his boots, it may have been disrespectful in some right, but he wasn’t sure where to look at this felt like the safest bet. His thoughts were running a mile a minute. Here it comes. Yeah, we can forget all about last night and I promise to think only wholesome thoughts when looking at you-
“I would love to see that MiG polaroid sometime.” You smiled up as the taller man finally met your gaze. You swear you could fall for those amber eyes even though you both knew that could never happen.
Goose smiled at your comment. “I’ll admit if this top gun thing doesn’t work out, I could always fall on photography as a backup,” he joked.
“Don’t forget your singing career. With that, you’re practically a triple threat, Lieutenant.
“Please, call me Nick. At least in casual conversation.”
“Are you anticipating more casual conversations with me Lieutenant?” Before he could answer you looked down at your watch noticing the time. “Well, Nick I should get going. I’m sure I will be seeing you.”
The way his name fell from your lips was heavenly. Unfortunately, before he could form a cohesive sentence you were already making your way down the hall.
The next day the Pilots and RIOs were split, with pilots going with Charlie to discuss the maneuvering capabilities of the F-18 and RIOs going with you to discuss radar systems and running hypotheticals drills.
You were leaning on the desk in front and center of the small lecture-style room. You could hear the ROIs down the hall before they made their entrance into the room. Marcus ‘Sundown’ Williams, Leonard ‘Wolfman’ Wolfe, Ron "Slider" Kerner, and Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw. The boys took their seats as you began.
Goose couldn’t help but stare at you as you began talking about radar systems that he knew like the back of his hand. He listened to you talk about the F14’s APG-65 system and its uses. He couldn’t deny that you knew what you were talking about, he could tell that this introduction was to spell that out to the others. He thought about how often people might not take you as seriously as they might a man in your same position and how the thought of someone disrespecting you ticked him off.
“-but you all knew that.” Your pause brought Nick out of his thoughts to focus back on your lecture. “To an extent, a raid assessment allows radar separation of closely spaced targets. While these are advanced systems, and ones far better than what we were using 3 years ago, they are not perfect. If a second MiG is flying close enough below the first, the APG won’t be able to detect the second aircraft until it has diverged from its partner.” You paused for a moment to glance at Goose. “I’m sure some of you have seen this firsthand.” You tried not to maintain eye contact with Goose for too long, however, his eyes never left your form.
Your lecture came to a close. You stood at the head of the desk gathering some files. You hadn’t noticed that someone had stayed behind until you heard a voice from behind you. “You really know your stuff.” Goose was leaning against the railing in front of the first row of lecture seating.
“I sure hope so, I was told I was hired for that very reason.” You said with a smile before turning to face the tall aviator. “Is there anything I can help you with?”
Goose looked down at his boots before looking back up to meet your gaze, “I wanted to ask, why didn’t you tell me who you were the other night.”
“I remember telling you my name. However, I may have left out the Top Gun instructor part.” You leaned against the desk and watched as Nick made his way close to you.
“A small detail. I can see how it could be overlooked.” He joked. He stopped just in of you, watching you look up at him. He couldn’t help as less-than-appropriate thoughts wandered into his mind. He shouldn’t be flirting with you, but you weren’t exactly making any attempts to stop him.
“A small oversight.” You could feel your heartbeat quicken slightly. You bite your cheek in an attempt to subdue the smile that was attempting to make its way across your lips. You couldn’t deny that Nick Bradshaw was a handsome man. His dirty blonde hair, his amber eyes, his voice that you knew could make any woman melt.
“I’ll be honest… I’m very tempted to ask you to dinner.”
Your eyes left his as you scribbled something on a piece of paper, “I usually make it a point to not date my students, Lieutenant.”
For a moment Nick thought he had crashed and burned, but then your words hit him, “usually?”
You folded the quarter sheet of paper twice, “usually.” You smile up at him before standing and gathering your things. Before making your exit, you placed the small note into his breast pocket, taping it lightly.
Nick watched as you exited the room. As clique as it was, he hated to see you go but couldn’t complain about watching you leave. When you were out the door he quickly grabbed the note out of his pocket
Dinner tonight 6:00 102 Laurel Beach Don’t be late!
“Holy shit…” Goose looked at his watch, it was 3:30 now. He grabbed his jacket and ran out into the hallway only to be met with Mav and Ice having a dick-measuring contest just down the hall. “Mav!” he waved his pilot down.
“Might want to run along to mother Goose,” Ice laughs.
“Yeah, I’m sure you have to find Slider and make sure he’s not lost in the hangar again.” Mav flashed the taller pilot a smile before making his way down the hall to his RIO.
“You never gonna believe this,” he hands Mav the note.
Mav looks at the note, “wow, Goose, your handwriting has improved. But you didn’t have to write me a note to get me to go to dinner with you.”
Goose let out a fake laugh placing his hand over his heart, “haha! Oh, Mav, you kill me!” He snatches the note out of the shorter man’s hands. “It’s from Stinger.”
“Bullshit!”
Nick held up three fingers, “scouts honor!”
Mav looked at his watch, “You better get going. You definitely need a shower. Also please don’t wear one of your stupid Hawaiian shirts…”
“What? Ladies love my Hawaiian shirts!”
“Sure, they do.” Mav rolled his eyes watching his friend practically run down the hallway. “And use protection!” He yells.
Goose turns to run backward and flashes a middle finger and a smile to Mav before making his way out of the building.

katie my dear, im so obsessed w parent trap rooster !! i need to know everything about that beefy dilf and his family 😭🫶🏽 what habits does he have that make mama bradshaw's eye twitch ?? what habits does she have that send him into a crisis? do they have any family traditions and if so, how have those traditions changed now that theyre divorced ?? i need a directors cut and a breakdown of everything behind the scenes ASAP bc theyre just such a fun family to read about 🫶🏽 im incredibly excited to see where this story goes !!
AH I LOVE TALKING ABOUT THIS MAN, LETS GO!
Habits that he has:
— Talks in his sleep, makes no sense, often says something really freaky like ‘they’re coming’ and then is knocked out immediately which leaves mama bradshaw half hiding under the covers like 😳
— Uses her expensive products and denies it even though he comes out of the bathroom smelling like he just got back from the spa
— Puts his feet on / near her. (They promptly get kicked off and he goes 🙁)
Habits that she has:
— Forgets to lock the front door sometimes which stresses him tf out when he thinks about being away on deployments and stuff.
— Reorganises stuff and forgets to tell him so then he can’t find things.
— Likes to wax / pluck his eyebrows to keep them tamed. (This is payback for him touching her expensive products)
— Dresses the girls matching and completely throws him off on telling which kid is which.
Family Traditions:
— They always visit Goose’s grave on Father’s Day and Carole’s on Mother’s Day. Mama Bradshaw always makes sure that he has the girls for at least an hour on mothers day so that this tradition can continue
— Peyton and Parker refuse to match on Halloween, they have to have completely separate costumes every year.
— Before the divorce, Bradley was always in charge of cooking at least the meat for each family holiday bc it stressed out mama bradshaw. Cooking the turkey the first thanksgiving after the divorce was rlly hard.
— No kids in the bronco. Mama Bradshaw says it’s not safe and they try to stick to this when they can but they’ve gotten less strict with this as the girls have gotten older

Hey Steph! 😍
> Which one of your works would you like to experience the most? As in, you can live one day in one of your verses, which one do you choose and what would you do?
[NFL au is excluded. You can't choose that one. 🤭]
> Which scene made you the most emotional or did you love writing the most?
> Do I dare you to make a list of your potential and possible fic ideas? Yes, I dare you, but you don't have to answer that one if ya don't want to. 😁
> Unrelated to your works, but which character from Top Gun 1986 do you love the most?
Travel safe, dear!!! 😘
Oh my gosh friend you came with some good ones!
-ah no nfl okay….I’d say my Jurassic park AU? I would like to see some dinosaurs please (preferably not the day it all goes to shit lmao). I’d want to be a dinosaur vet and work with the little guys. Or maybe be part of Jake, bradley, & the gang’s new little archeology group
-oh god most emotional was the scene in my pirates AU where bradley escapes with mav and ice and Nick and Carole don’t 😭 or my twister AU where it’s the final straw and they’re gonna get divorced. but my fave scene to write was in my nfl au- when they godparent trap. It’s short but it was so fun
-omg okay…..I have so many. I have this document I call my writing recipe book, and I throw any and all idea inspiration in it. Song lyrics, random dialogue, story ideas, etc. So some of my potential ideas- Independence Day AU, Antarctica story, Batman/vigilante, princess diaries 2, this dna soulmate story, and this very loosely inspired Gone Girl AU 👀
-GOOSE MY BOYYYYYYYYYYY. Carole. And then Ice 😬
❤️❤️❤️❤️ you

I raise you- Carole was Pete's ex-wife!
They had really bad roommates in their first semester of college, getting married and sharing a bed for a few years in order to rent a cheap single room together from a conservative landlady was the easiest solution, which worked as well as it did because they were both focused on their goals and were strictly roommates and partners-in-life. Possibly fwb, if they didn't slip straight into a sibling type relationship.
They graduated, and their divorce was finalised before Maverick finished flight school. Neither of them thought anything of it when he had leave nearby and decided to introduce his new best friend and RIO to Carole, former roommate. It's not like they'd had an actual marriage, they'd just lived together, shared a room and chores and finances and supported each other as best as they could.
It'd be really funny if they never mentioned having been married until she and Goose were arguing over who got Mav to stand with them.
Goose- Well, he's my best friend, and my pilot.
Carole- He was my roommate for years and my husband for almost four.
Goose-... You were married?
Carole- Yeah, didn't he tell you about our apartment? The best place we could afford would only rent to us if we were married.
Goose- I did think it was weird you found an apartment together, but I figured you rented from a hippy or something.
Carole- We did consider that apartment, but the neighbour would not stop singing the whole time we were there and we both stunk like weed and incense after we left.
Wouldn't it be funny if Carole was Mav's ex-girlfriend when she and Goose met

Deciding that Carole and Charlie should kiss. Goose dies or he lives but he and Carole divorce (because of a wider plot where he wins top gun, becomes an instructor but falls for Slider and either cheats on her or just divorces her because he doesn't love her).
She ends up taking up a job in the Library of Congress in DC, because she wants a new start but also because there's good benefits. Charlie bumps into her one day while at work and they reconnect. They become friends, go for coffee and Charlie shows her the sights.
One thing leads to another, however, Carole finds out why Charlie left Maverick behind after Goose’s accident, she realised she’s a lesbian. Carole jokes that Mav turned her off men and reveals to her how her marriage fell apart. They make a pact "fuck navy men, but not literally" and end up kissing.
They take it slow, Carole’s never dated a woman before and has a little bit of apprehension because she’s heavily Christian. Goose picks Bradley up with Slider, Mav and Ice for scout camp and is surprised to see Charlie saying goodbye and telling Bradley they'll get him a souvenir from France. Carole’s almost showing Charlie off, like she’s trying to show him she can run off with someone they both know as well. Charlie just stares daggers at him while Goose puts the pieces that Carole’s new thing is Charlie Blackwood and not some guy named Charlie. He's also surprised that his jealousy over someone else getting to raise his kid doesn't go away
Things work out well for them. Charlie starts smiling at work more, Carole mentions Charlie to the other parents but never says "she" or "her" so everyone assumes it's a guy until a friend drops Bradley off from a sleepover, gets invited in for coffee and sees the now infamous Charlie in Carole’s robe.
News spreads, Carole brings Charlie to a bbq after the end of the kids' little league season and educate a lot of the people there about lesbianism, and how Carole is bisexual, not a lesbian.
When Bradley’s arranging a birthday sleepover however, and this is when Carole and Charlie have moved in together, one of the kid's isn't allowed to come. Charlie finds this out when picking Bradley up in her porsche, she also finds out that the reason why is because they don't want him being brainwashed. She confronts the mum, being all nice in that corporate "I hate you but I can't say it" way until the mum caves from being confronted and lets the kid go.
Charlie goes on a conference to China for a while and thinks of her girl the whole time. She even brings her back a fancy robe

post-divorced Goose gets take out for a night by Mav and ends up bringing home a man, you can call me Slider, that promises and delivers exactly what he needed: getting fucked so hard Goose forgets everything else and fuck if he knows how to use his tounge and the piercing is all another experience against his skin and the most sensible places of his body.
The morning after Slider is still there, in his kitchen, making him breakfast in too short shorts and Goose as no shame in admitting getting on his knees to blow him is worth all the strange noises his knees make when he gets up.
note: past!carole/goose, slider/goose, one night stand (or maybe not), possible developing relationships, gap age, goose is in his forties and slider in his thirties, slider fucks goose so good goose blows him over breakfast because slider is a vision in his kitchen making him breakfast in shorts too short to be legal.
(For visual effects: Slider.)

Roley Coley's Writing Masterlist
My AO3.
Helping Hands
Summary: Phoenix has had a long day. She knows the only thing that will make her feel better is coming home to you and getting a little help to unwind.
Square Peg, Round Hole
Summary: You love Bradley Bradshaw. He really is like a dream. You just wish that your parents didn't love him just as much as you do.
Green, Green, Green
Summary: You haven't had a very good Saint Patrick's Day. Somehow your neighbor Jake "Hangman" Seresin makes it all better, and also so much worse.
Bones, Hearts, & Marriages
Summary: You and Javy "Coyote" Machado did not get married for the right reasons. Now, three years later, you are going to make sure that you two at least get divorced for the right reasons to make up for it. However, per usual, things don't always seem to go to plan when Coyote is involved.
House We Share
Summary: A three part mini-series. You fall a little more in love with your roommate Jake Hangman Seresin every day. Every part of him is endearing to you, even if you're not sure he will ever love you back.
Reminders
Summary: Your definition of teasing has changed significantly since you started sleeping with Jake "Hangman" Seresin. The man lived for it. Anything you two were doing, he would find something or some way to tease you.
Inconceivable!
Summary: No one tells you how hard it is to have to plan to leave and hurt the love of your life. However, when you know you want different things, you must choose. And your baby is probably the only thing you can ever imagine ever choosing over Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw.
Let's Drink Coffee At Midnight
Summary: The truth was, in many ways, Carole understood Pete like no one else ever would, and the same could be said for vice versa. Pete understood Carole in a way no one else ever would. She can see the tension in Carol's shoulders, even with the little time she's known her; and despite the awkward situation Val still think she's beautiful, even when looking like a kicked puppy. Eyes are warm as she watches her interact with Monica; and Val almost tells the girl that she can absolutely stay the night and excuse herself— but the other mom steps in before she can react. A selfish part of her is thankful, unready to part ways with the blonde again, and another breaks her heart upon seeing the disappointment on Monica's little face.
They say their goodbyes, and Val realizes that she's barely let out a breath while that was happening; and the silence fills the living room, and it's loud, despite the TV booming in the background and Goose purring in her lap.
At first, neither of them speak and Val doesn't even know where to begin, the hurt still there embedded beneath her chest— but sympathy overwhelms it, seeing the genuine regret on Carol's face, knowing how hard it must be. After all, she is the one that travels and leaves all the time, and she cannot imagine what it would be like if there was a child in the mix, too.
Gently lifting the cat and putting her on the pillow where Monica had just been sitting, Val gets up and sits on the couch next to Carol; far away enough not to encroach on her space but close enough for her folded knee to touch the side of Carol's thigh, fully turned to her. "You don't have to apologize to me." She hums, swallowing the you don't owe me a thing stuck in her throat. Instead, a smile. "Families are hard, especially under these circumstances." Shared parenting; she means. A child of divorced parents herself, Val vividly remembers what it was like growing up in two households— and though both her parents were better than the majority of her friends', it was still an incredibly difficult thing to balance.
"We're cool, really." She muses, leaning her head on the hand propped on the back of the couch. "I'm okay with staying... if you are. And if not, I'll completely understand too. Just say the word."
She wants to reach out now, but knows that her place is not to console the other until explicitly asked; they have known each other for barely a day, after all. And then, a little softer: "But for the record; I could never forget you exist. Even if I tried really hard."
Getting chewed out by her ex-wife was never on her to-do list that night, but there she was, the cold humidity of Louisiana biting against the skin her costume left exposed as Maria spoke strongly about how disappointed she was in things like this continuing to happen — meaning Carol’s complete and utter failure at being a present mom in Monica’s life after she moved out. It wasn’t entirely her fault, she was trying. Truly. But it was a weird situation and one that she hadn’t managed to fix no matter how much she knew the little girl had wanted her to and that left it difficult to face Monica most days. The guilt ate her alive and so she buried it in literally everything else she could find; work, fixing up her car, one night stands, sometimes even alcohol and a trashy tv show if she was feeling adventurous.
She’d never meant for Val to bear witness to this part of her, not when she knew that the other would likely return to her fancy job in Norway and forget all about her. There was something about being cracked wide open for the other to see that caused more panic to rise in her chest than the words that Maria tossed her way did.
At least she knew what to expect from the woman she once called her wife — and deserved every little bit of it.
And she wasn’t innocent either, sharing a few of her own raised words of excuses and complaints until they both eventually ran out of steam and she remembered that Monica was left in the house with Val and neither one asked for the awkward situation they now found themselves in. So they shelved the argument and Carol opened the front door, padding her way back into the house and toward the sounds of tv and soft laughter she heard coming from the living room. The thought of wanting to see Val in her living room on just a random Tuesday after work hit her full force as her gaze landed on the woman who was entertaining a very excited Monica, Goose settled warmly in her lap. If anxiety and discomfort weren’t already prickling on the top of her skin, she would’ve melted immediately at the side.
But instead, she remained on edge and nodded as she caught Val’s question, trying to convey just how thankful she was for the other’s ease in the situation that presented itself. It was weird, Carol knew that, but it was entirely on her for forgetting. She bit her lip in hesitation before she approached the two and settled on her knees in front of Monica, taking the little girl’s hands in hers. She wasn’t so little anymore, Carol knew that. Almost ten was a big deal and she knew that the other understood more of what was going on than anyone gave her credit for, but it broke her heart thinking about it.
“I’m really sorry that I forgot about tonight,” the blonde admitted, the feeling of both of the other women’s eyes on her, one waiting in the doorway and the other nearby, almost made her retreat from the situation entirely, though she powered on for the sake of Monica. “I was talking to your mom and we were thinking maybe I can stop by tomorrow and you can tell me all about tonight and we can snack on all of the good candy you got, even the Reese’s I know you stole from the cabinet,” the teasing words came with a soft grin and a poke to the girl’s nose, “And we can even pull the Christmas decorations out from the barn while I’m there, how does that sound?”
It wasn’t the solution Monica wanted, not when she tried to argue about how she was there already and was having fun showing the cool costumed Valkyrie all of her candy and why couldn’t she just stay. Thankfully, Maria chimed in and was commanding enough to leave Monica gathering her candy back in her bag and Carol standing up regretfully as the little girl gave her a hug goodbye, the blonde whispering “I’ll be there, I promise”. A tiny wave and polite goodbye toward Val was all that left before Carol walked the two to the door and returned a moment later, alone, with a breath that she’d been holding since the final knock on the door.
“I’m sorry,” Carol admitted, a soft desperation in the quiet murmur of her tone as she motioned toward the front of the house, the tv still droning on as she dropped down onto the couch nearby and ran her hands over her face. “I wasn’t expecting… I was an idiot who forgot they were supposed to stop by tonight when I agreed to meet up. It was weird, I know, and I totally understand if you just want me to take you back to the hotel and you can forget I even exist.”

Warm air blew on Aurora’s skin as she stood in the sun with her fellow classmates, waiting to walk across the stage to receive both her diplomas from college. Today she was graduating from college with her family in the stands watching her. Her father had just flown in from one of his deployments. Amelia and Penny were there, and her stepfather, if you could even still consider him that, was absent.
After the divorce, Aurora became a rock for her mom when she needed to. Even though the twins had gone to schools across the country from Penny and Amelia, they still came back home when they could. Peyton went to the Naval Academy, and Aurora went to UVA, much to everyone’s surprise, since this would be the first time the two siblings would be separated.
Peyton had just finished his training at the Naval Academy and came just in time for Aurora’s graduation. Goose and Carole had flown in the day before, and Iceman and Sarah were also in town to watch her graduate. The only person who wasn’t there was Bradley. Bradley and Aurora had found their footing back after Christmas, as friends, but then something had happened.
Aurora had gotten word that her dad had tried to pull Bradley’s paper for the Naval Academy. Unsuccessful, but still something to note that he did it. Bradley had been mad. He was beyond furious that Maverick thought to do such a thing, and assumed Aurora took part in it, until Aurora had explained she had no idea why Maverick tried to pull his papers. Bradley was still a bit angry with Maverick to this day, but had put the anger away for his dad and his best friend.
On top of Maverick trying to pull his papers, Carole had also started getting sick. Ovarian cancer. Thankfully they caught it in time to operate. Those days had been a hard time for the Bradshaws and while grateful Carole had been cured, the news that she wouldn’t be able to have any more children was also saddening to find out. Aurora was simply thankful to still have her aunt, and would visit her often when she had moved to Virginia for college.
Although when Bradley was attending and finishing up at the Naval Academy, Aurora was finishing high school, they both still had time to write each other letters. Of course, Bradley would call in now and then but they found letters to be a better time when they were able to write about their days and send it off. After Aurora and Bradley both finished at their respective schools, they thought they would see more of each other, with Aurora going to UVA, and Bradley about to be stationed in Virginia. At least, that was what they were hoping for when Bradley finished flight school in Pensacola, Florida.
“You didn’t have to help me move into my dorm, B. You have to leave soon for flight school. You too Peyton, you literally start at the Academy in 2 days.” Aurora sighs out as she puts down a box onto her bed for the year. Bradley was right behind her, with a few other boxes, as well as Peyton who was also there helping his twin sister move into her new room.
“What, you think we’re gonna leave you by yourself, without giving you a proper goodbye?” Bradley smirks, setting down the boxes.
Peyton chuckles, “No, she thinks you’re gonna chase down any guy that looks her way.”
“Damn right I will.”
Aurora rolls her eyes but smiles at Bradley’s protectiveness. Even though they never discussed the kiss since that Christmas day, they both went back to being best friends. Little did she know, Bradley felt the same way she did. They both didn’t want to lose each other. She looks at Peyton.
“What if I can’t do this without Pey? I don’t remember the last time we were separated for this long. What if something happens and you're not here?” Aurora starts panicking. “What if I get a boyfriend and you're not here to give him the ‘I’m her brother and if you hurt her I’ll hurt you’ talk? Or worse, what if you get a boyfriend or girlfriend before I even date?”
Peyton had come out as bisexual to his family during their senior year of high school. Everyone in the family had supported him, with Aurora helping defend her brother when he started getting bullied at school. Gone was the shy girl, and out came a protective sister when she realized how much family meant to her.
Peyton laughs and hugs his sister to stop her rambling. “I will be just fine. I got the Benjamin-Mitchell blood in me. We’re fighters, we got this.”
Peyton turns to look his twin in the eye, drawing her out of her thoughts. “I’m worried about you though. You’ll be alright, Aurie? I’ll always be a phone call away.”
Touched by those words, Aurora smiles and drags Bradley in for a group hug with her and Peyton.
“Of course, I have you two to always check up on me.”
Peyton had a great time at the Naval Academy, while Aurora went through college on her own. It was a bit tough at first but she had finally found her footing once she got the hang of being on her own. While Bradley was at flight school, he had finally earned his callsign, and couldn’t wait to tell his best friend.
“Ok, it’s not my birthday, so why are you so excited for me to open this package?” Aurora sets her phone down on her apartment desk, with the camera still facing her as she was on a video call with Bradley.
“Because you finally get to know my call sign!” Bradley exclaimed excitedly, causing Aurora to gasp.
“Wait, so it’s not BradBrad? Damn I owe Peyton $20,” she teases. Bradley groans, as he was already impatient that he had to wait for the package to even get to Aurora.
“Just open it.”
“Okay fine, they should have called you Hothead because you’re so easily bothered.”
“So you’re calling me hot?” Bradley quips back at her.
Aurora rolls her eyes and sticks up her middle finger. She then proceeds to open the package and she takes out the item Bradley had sent her.
“Oh my gosh! Your callsign is Mother Hen!?” she cackles.
“Wait, What? No! It’s Rooster, dummy!”
“I don’t know. I think I like Mother Hen better,” Aurora teases. She holds up the rooster stuffed animal that he had sent her.
“That’s not gonna stick.”
“Oh, it so is!” she exclaims, hugging her new stuffed friend. Bradley took a screenshot of that moment.
After a year and a half, Bradley had finally graduated flight school. Aurora could remember that day. She’d gone to his graduation tapping out ceremony along with Carole, Goose, Maverick and Peyton. They all agreed that they would all be tapping him out, but the day of, Carole and Goose wanted Peyton and Aurora to tap him out.
“Wait, but Uncle, Auntie, it should be you two to tap him out. Why us two?” Aurora gestures between her and her brother.
“Because without you two, Bradley wouldn’t be here.” Carole simply says as Goose nods next to her.
Aurora was stunned, not sure why they didn’t just do a group hug to tap him out, but they all insisted that the twins do it. So as Aurora and Peyton find Bradley amongst his fellow graduates, she starts getting nervous. Peyton was subtly checking out the graduates while they weaved through the crowd.
They soon spot their best friend, who still was standing at attention, waiting to be tapped out. They approach him hand and hand, with Carole and Maverick trailing behind the twins, Goose capturing the moment with his camera.
“Look at this, the BAP trio, back together again!” Peyton speaks up, knowing Bradley couldn’t respond until he was tapped out. Aurora had tears running down her cheeks.
“We’re so proud of you Bradley,” Aurora beams at him. Bradley stood still, itching to hug his best friends. Aurora and Peyton then look at each other and go in for a group hug, tapping Bradley out. He instantly clung to both of them, tears running down everyone's faces.
“Thank you for being here,” Bradley whispers to them.
“Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world,” Both Peyton and Aurora reply at the same time. They all look at each other and laugh, as Bradley pries himself out of the group hug and goes to hug his mom and dad, who were already in shambles, proud tears on their faces, while Maverick took over the camera to take pictures of the family.
After that, Bradley was finally stationed in Virginia, assigned to his squadron which meant Aurora got to spend a lot more time with her best friend, until his orders came through for his first deployment. It lasted six months, with Aurora already in her junior year she and Bradley relied a lot on their communication with letters. It never stopped Bradley from sending her flowers, or even small packages to her containing treats from wherever he was docked, or even postcards, while Aurora did the same, she would often send Bradley care packages to help him through deployment.
They kept in constant communication, even with them being miles apart from each other. Aurora was a bit sad when she found out Bradley wouldn’t be able to make her college graduation due to his next deployment, but she understood that.
“Psst, you alright Mitchell?” a voice calls out drawing her out of her thoughts. She looks and sees her girl best friend and roommate since freshman year seated next to her.
‘I’m fine Belmont, why do you ask?” she replies.
“You just look very deep in thought. Wouldn’t want you to miss your own graduation.”
Aurora laughs with her friend. Lucille and Aurora became great friends when they realized that they were going to be roommates. Lucille was graduating with a criminal justice degree, and going straight into law school in the upcoming fall semester. They had each other’s back throughout college, and soon became family to each other. Aurora was sad that her friend was moving all the way to California for her law degree, but was so proud of her for staying on her path to becoming an attorney.
“Aurora Benjamin-Mitchell, with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science, and a Bachelor of Arts in Aviation, Cumme Laude!” a voice calls out, drawing her back to the present.
There is a loud cheer as she crosses the stage, as she could spot her family from the stands, as she takes her diploma and shakes hands with the dean. She walks off smiling and waving at them, to which they cheer even louder. She laughs and goes back to her seat until the end of the ceremony.
—
“I’m so proud of you!” Penny hugs her older daughter tightly, after she had already hugged everyone else.
Aurora laughs. “Mom, you already said you were, we took pictures and everything just a few minutes ago.”
“I know, but I just wanted to say it again because I’m so, so proud of my little star.” Penny gushes as she squishes her daughter’s face. Aurora rolls her eyes, and locks eyes with her dad.
“Dad, a little help please.” she pleads to him. Maverick chuckles.
“Oh no kid, you’re on your own.”
She groans as Peyton helps pry their mom off the girl.
“Alright mom, we get it, Aurie is the favorite child.” Peyton jokes.
“Hey, I thought I was the favorite!” Amelia calls out, who was standing next to Maverick, hand in hand.
“Of course you are Ami, don’t listen to your older siblings, they’re just jealous.” Maverick leans to stage whisper to her. She giggles at Maverick’s antics, as the others roll their eyes. She looks to see her Auntie Carole, without Goose by her side.
“Hey, where’d Uncle Goose go?”
“Probably went to the car to take a nap. He’s getting really old.”
Penny smacks Maverick’s arm at his answer while everyone laughs.
“He’s getting your graduation present,” Carole answers Aurora’s question.
“You really didn’t have to get me anything, Auntie.” Aurora nervously says, thinking it was an expensive gift and she didn’t want her godparents to be giving her such a gift.
“Well, unfortunately we can’t return this gift,” Goose says from behind her.
She turns towards her uncle and gasps. Standing next to Goose was Bradley Bradshaw, her best friend in the flesh, and not on deployment like he had said. He was dressed in slacks and a polo shirt, holding a bouquet of flowers in his hand, pink peonies and white carnations.
Pink peonies meaning prosperity, and white carnations good luck, appropriate for graduation as well as it being Aurora’s favorite color combination.
She squeals at the sight of him before running into his awaiting arms and when he caught her, she’d truly felt like she was home. Like she had found the missing piece from today.
“Congrats princess, I’m so proud of you,” Bradley whispers into her ear. She clings on to him, never wanting to let go.
“Am I dreaming? You’re actually here?” she questions.
He pulls back to take a look at her face and smirks. “Why? Dream of me often, Mitchell?”
She smiles at him and cups his face. “Every hour, every minute, every second I breathe, Bradshaw.”
She pulls him back into a hug as he kisses her forehead. “Best surprise ever,” she whispers to him.
“Well there goes the car we got her ‘ey Pen?”
—
Carole and Goose went all out to celebrate not only Aurora’s graduation, but Peyton’s graduation as well. The twins had decided to do a joint party, like they normally do with birthdays and other big celebrations. The Bradshaws’ backyard had quite a few people. Mostly all family friends, since Aurora and Peyton’s friends had other celebration plans.
Lucille and Aurora had walked in, arms linked laughing at a joke Lucille had made. Aurora had made her rounds around the backyard, making sure to hug and greet everyone at the party. She talked a bit to Viper, who was Maverick’s old Top Gun instructor. He had made a joke saying he hopes to see her in the skies soon, to which Aurora just laughed it off lightly. She got to hear old stories from her Uncle Ice, and his backseater Slider, but her favorite interaction was when she had introduced her best friend to them.
“Uncle Ice, Slider, this is my friend Lucille. She just graduated and is headed to UCLA for law school. Lucille, this is my dad’s other wingman, callsign Iceman, and his RIO, Slider.” Aurora introduces them.
“Hi, it’s nice to meet you,” Lucille greets them, shaking their hands. “Your callsign is pretty neat. I also like slider burgers!”
The older men stood frozen as Aurora looks at her best friend in shock. She apologizes and excuses both of them, and drags her best friend away as they laugh at what had taken place.
“So, you tell your dad about what you’re doing next?” Lucille asks, as she takes a soda from one of the many coolers that were set out.
Aurora took a considerable sip of the drink in her hand before answering.
“Not yet. Think I could make a run for it before I make the announcement?”
“You try and run, I'll be right behind you following in your footsteps,” Peyton replies, coming up from behind the duo, with Bradley in tow wrapping an arm around Aurora’s waist. They had just come back from talking to another group of family friends.
“What’s the big announcement? And why haven’t you told me? You always tell me everything,” Bradley pouted at both the twins.
“Because Mother Hen, we don’t know if our dad will like what we have to say,” Aurora answers, as she chews the inside of her cheek. Nervously, she began playing around with her silver charm bracelet, adorned with a new charm Bradley got her, a graduation cap one. Bradley looks down at the girl who couldn't keep still. He knew her mind was racing but didn’t say anything about it.
“Seriously? That name is sticking?”
“Hell yeah!” Both twins answer.
“I don’t know, I'm still partial to Chicken Little,” Lucille answers as Bradley sticks up his middle finger in retaliation.
“Rory, Pey!” They turn and see Maverick calling out to them, gesturing for the twins to come up the steps leading to the house, as if it was a makeshift stage. Penny stood by him waving to them. It was time for the twins to tell everyone what was next.
“Showtime,” Peyton sarcastically mutters, as he yanks his sister out of Bradley’s arm and drags her to the crowd that was forming around Maverick and Penny, the two making room for the twins as they climbed the steps.
“Alright Pey, you first,” Penny says to him.
“What? Wait, maybe Aurora should go first.”
“Oh heck no, mom says you go first, besides you’re older!” Aurora points out.
Peyton groans, while Penny tells them to behave. He clears his throat before beginning to speak to everyone in the backyard.
“Hi, everyone! Thank you all for coming! I think I speak for both my sister and myself when I say we are so happy to see that all our friends and family are here. First I want to give thanks to our parents.”
“For we wouldn’t be here without them.” Aurora speaks up as she turns to smile at her parents, her stomach twisting in anticipation.
“And thank you to the Bradshaws for not only their hospitality, but for being the best godparents we could ask for.”
“And our best friends Bradley Bradshaw and Lucille Belmont for being our anchors.”
“Okay, stop stalling, just tell us already!” Goose shouts from his spot in the crowd, as everyone laughs and Carole tries to shush him. The twins give each other a nervous look before Peyton continues on.
“After getting my BAs in Aviation and Aerospace Engineering,” Peyton says, “I have decided to go to Technical School and become an Aviation Mechanic.”
Everyone gasps and after a bit of silence, cheers and claps for Peyton. The twins turn to Maverick and Penny. Penny had the look of a proud mom, whereas Maverick’s face was unreadable.
“What happened to wanting to be a Naval Aviator?” Maverick murmurs to Peyton.
“As much as I want to be in the skies, I think my love for Legos knew I wasn’t ever going to be in the skies as much. Plus, I love fighter jets, just not enough to pilot one. I hope you’re not too disappointed in me dad.” Peyton explains. Maverick pulls his son into a hug.
“I could never be disappointed. Just a bit shocked.” Maverick pulls out of the hug and taps Peyton’s shoulder. “I’m proud of you Pey. You’re gonna make us proud.” Penny then hugs her son and whispers something in his ears that makes his eyes almost water. He nods and turns to his sister who was beaming with pride.
“I’m happy for you, Pey.”
“Oh please, like you didn’t see that coming. I told you like a month ago.” They laugh and he pulls his twin into a one arm hug.
“And Aurora, what about you?” Maverick turns to look at her daughter. Aurora takes a deep breath and turns to the awaiting crowd. She spots Bradley in the crowd as he gives her a smile and thumbs up.
Aurora’s thoughts ran rampant in her head, her next words being the big life changer. She grabs her bracelet again as she fidgets with it in anticipation, hoping it would calm her down.
“With getting my degree in Political Science and Aviation, I have decided that-”
Aurora stills and turns to look at her parents. They smile at her, knowing her parents would support her decision. She grabs her twin’s hand and she thinks back to when she had made her decision.
“Wait, can you say that again?”
“I want you to work for me. You’ve already proved that you have the skill set to be a great asset here, and you already get along with the team.”
“But, this was just an internship, a requirement for one of my classes. Why me? You have a ton of willing candidates out there,” she turns to the gentlemen that stood in front of her.
He had a stern look on his face, serious about what he had asked Aurora. He was an older man that had white hair and stood up straight, with an expression showing he was serious. Aurora had gotten to know him and his team during her internship. He was intimidating and quiet at the same time. Everyone knew of him because he was just that intimidating. He took his job seriously, which was why Aurora was confused why he had approached her with a job offer on her last day of her internship, a few months before she was set to graduate.
“Because I see a potential in you,” he simply tells her.
“Ok, but I’m perfectly content in following my dad’s footsteps.”
He sighs “Rule #5”
“You don’t waste good,” Aurora mutters as she rocks back on her heels. She looks down at her wrist where her charm bracelet Bradley had given her sat. It brought her comfort as she thought about the situation in front of her,
She had memorized all the weird rules this man had when she worked with him for the past couple of months. No one but her brother knew about the internship. She didn’t even tell Bradley because she knew what he would say. She was old enough to finally make a decision on her own without having to tell her parents or her best friend about it.
“Exactly, and you are good. But you can be better,” he tells her, as she draws herself from her thoughts. She looks up and sees him make eye contact with her.
“So what do you say probie?” He approaches her with his arm extended for her to shake.
This was the moment. Follow her father’s path, or make her own name for herself.
“Ready to work for NCIS?”

Top Gun Headcanon - Birth Order Theory Edition
If you’re reading Talk to Me on ao3, then you’ve probably noticed that siblings play a huge role in the story and that’s not an accident.
There are so many things that influence our personalities, and I love observing the role that siblings or no siblings plays in that. So here’s my headcanon for our favorite TGM characters’ family dynamics.
Phoenix - Phoenix is the third of four children with two older brothers and a younger sister. She has the adaptability and peacekeeping skills of a middle child but knows how to manipulate alliances to get what she wants when she wants to. As the younger sister of two brothers, she has no trouble or lack of confidence fitting into the male-dominated world of the Navy. While she has an easy relationship with her older brothers, her relationship with her younger sister is more complicated and they are most likely to take their frustrations out on one another. Phoenix’s parents divorced when she was young so she felt extra pressure to hold the family together. Her brothers’ protection became her source of stability, but she can sometimes unfairly place all of the blame for conflicts on her younger sister. Family nicknames: Sasha/Sash because there was another Natasha in her class and she didn’t want to be Natasha T, kids made fun of her for Nat, and Tasha seemed like a butt. Chickadee (her mom) for her bright nature and obsession with the sky. Nasha because her older brother couldn’t pronounce her name as a toddler.
Rooster - Rooster is very much an only child. He’s independent, sensitive, a little self-absorbed from time to time, and unable to shrug off (or at least pretend to ignore) Hangman’s teasing the way the other pilots do. He can find it hard to relate to his peers, especially because he matured so quickly after losing his dad at such a young age. As the only child of a single parent, he feels a huge sense of responsibility toward those around him. Family nicknames: Booger or Boo (Carole may have had too much of a sense of humor), Nicky (Goose) short for “Nicholas,” his middle name
Hangman - For much of his life, Hangman was the adored younger brother. His parents may have told him they’re proud of him one too many times. As the younger sibling of a sister, he has a sensitive streak that often catches people off guard. He’s outgoing with a lack of a sense of responsibility for others. An attention seeker, he knows how to turn on the charm or push people’s buttons as only a younger sibling can. Then his older sister died when they were in high school. He struggles with the responsibility he feels as his parents’ only surviving child and the feeling that he can never live up to his sister’s memory. Hangman was extremely close to his sister but doesn’t feel like he has the right to grieve her in comparison to his parents’ loss of a child. Family nicknames: Jakey
Bob - Bob is the youngest of four with two older sisters and one nonbinary sibling who spoil him as much as they gang up on him. He’s used to being drowned out and overlooked but accepts it as a fact of life rather than with resentment. However, he’s not without a spine and can give as good as he gets when he needs to hold his own. His parents gave him the confidence to let others take the lead and growing up with three assertive siblings, he has no problem playing second fiddle to any gender. Family nickname: Robby (and ONLY his family is allowed to call him this, with the exception of Phoenix in private)
Payback - Payback is in some ways the quintessential oldest child. He’s a little more reserved, an overachiever, and expects everyone to take responsibility for themselves and others. He has just one younger brother but grew up around several sibling-like cousins. Among them, he’s the middle child so he shows hints of peacekeeping, adaptability, and rebelliousness. He’s not opposed to breaking the rules, but he doesn’t like when people do it at someone else’s expense. He can see an argument coming from a mile away and, like a parent, will redirect the conversation rather than lowering himself into the immature fray. Family/Childhood nickname: He’s a third, so Trey and at school Fitch.
Fanboy - Fanboy was an only child when his parents got divorced and then became a younger step-sibling when one remarried and later an older half brother to a sister and brother when the other remarried. As someone forced into a position of fluidity, he prefers to hang back and observe but can work well with just about anyone. He has a natural, easy going nature and with so many different familial dynamics, he’s not as intimidated by established or de facto authority. Family nickname: None, he liked Mickey.
