Show me your phone
Request: Anonymous: Hiii I adore your writing!!! I was wondering if you could write cevansxfemale reader (famous or not) where he’s on jimmy fallon playing show me you phone and your relationship is revealed? ❤️
Pairing: Chris Evans x Famous!Female Reader
Warnings: No one/Fluff
Word count: 1536
A/N: Sorry for my spelling and grammatical mistakes, English is not my native language, I am learning.
The two of you had met by chance one autumn night ten months ago. Quite unexpected, unusual and with tremendous prejudices towards each other, because of the image the media projected of you.
It was obvious that you weren’t born for each other, or at least that’s what you thought the first time you went on your first date. But then one thing led to another, and your sporadic encounters in the most unusual places made you realise that maybe it would be better to give each other a chance to erase those prejudices you had in your minds. And so it was that as the days, weeks and months went by, you began to be in a relationship without being aware of the fact. You understood each other very well, you both worked in the same sector and that allowed you to understand and accept each other in many aspects.
For the time being you kept your relationship a secret, you were afraid of breaking the magic, of the media destroying what you had created. So your life as a couple was reduced to intimacy, living together and escapes to places far from the hand of God. However, you knew that sooner or later it would be discovered, it didn’t worry you too much, but you wanted to strengthen your relationship as much as possible until that moment arrived.
That night, Chris was going to be interviewed on Jimmy Fallon’s late night show because of the recent release of the movie Avengers: Endgame. It was common on nights when Chris was on one of the late night shows for you to stay at home, cook your favourite meal and wait on the couch with Dodger to watch him on TV. Before he came on, you used to send him a text message encouraging him and a picture of you and Dodger on your couch. It was like a ritual for both of you.
In a millisecond that message reached the other side of town, where Chris was staring at the image with a slightly scandalous laugh. He was in his dressing room, minutes away from going on air, and could barely reply with “I love you both”.
The interview was great, Chris talked about the day the cast said their goodbyes and how Antony Mackie found out that Captain America was going to give Falcon his shield. All the anecdotes that any Marvel fan would love to hear. Yet, as is well known, Jimmy Fallon’s shows bring with them a number of embarrassing moments for the interviewee, as well as the interviewer.
That night both Chris and Jimmy were going to play ‘Show me your phone’, a game where they had to show whatever material was hidden on their mobile phones. The moment they got up from their respective seats, Chris realised that he hadn’t deleted any of your conversations, you were present in his whatsapp, his picture gallery, his social media messages, emails… in other words, his whole phone was a personal diary of your relationship.
His nervousness was present as he took a seat opposite Jimmy at the circular table. In front of them there was a red button, in the centre a mobile phone holder and next to it was an electronic panel showing all the possibilities that could come up, as if it were a wheel of fortune. There was the icon for Whatsapp, Safari, the photo gallery, Instagram, email, last calls, notes…
“Okay, do you know how this works?” asked Jimmy putting on his jacket. “Well, for those of you who don’t know, here’s how this works. Chris and I will take turns pressing the red button we have here, which will randomly select one of these icons we have on the board.” Chris began to laugh somewhat nervously. “Each icon will reveal something we need to share on our phone…”
The audience began to laugh too at the worried gestures they were both making.
“Just so you know, neither of us know what’s behind each icon.” Jimmy looks at Chris who was still laughing. “Are you ready?”
“I’m not too sure about this,” Chris shared scratching his beard. “I forgot to clean some stuff off my phone.”
“That makes two of us,” Jimmy said laughing along with him. “Alright, here we go. Since you’re the guest you press first.”
“What an honour,” Chris said wryly, which drew laughter from the audience. “Here we go!”
Chris pressed the red button and quickly the icons on the panel began to light up, and you stood expectantly contemplating the moment. On the one hand the situation was amusing, but on the other hand you were completely scared and wished that what he had said about cleaning his phone wasn’t true.
The light stopped specifically on the Safari browser icon, so that a text was displayed that said 'Show us your last Google search’. Chris frowned and looked thoughtful.
“Safari, show us your last Google search,” Jimmy repeated.
“Okay!” exclaimed Chris grabbing his phone and heading to the app. “If I’m being honest I have no idea what my last search was… Oh!"
Chris started laughing without showing his phone, which caused everyone around him to laugh hilariously.
"Okay, okay,” Chris set the mobile down on the small platform. “I thought it was a funny idea.”
The camera pointed straight at him, checking that his last search had been 'Halloween costume ideas for your dog’. The set erupted in laughter, Jimmy clasped his hands to his chest, laughing his head off.
“This- This is so funny,” he said between guffaws. “Did you find anything interesting?”
“I did!” began Chris. “I found a really funny Mario and Luigi one, but it wasn’t too scary, you know. I’ve got to keep looking.”
“Yeah, not too much,” concluded Jimmy. “Come on! Here we go. My turn.”
The panel came back on, the light moving between icons until it stopped on the 'YouTube’ app. Jimmy frowned, and the panel informed him that it should show the history of videos watched.
“Come on, show us those videos!” exclaimed Chris encouragingly.
“I’m extremely scared,” said Jimmy with a serious and comical look on his face, reaching for his mobile phone. “I have no idea… Oh!” he began to laugh. “Okay, okay. This… I’m not good at cooking, don’t judge me.”
'How to cook oatmeal’, 'Easy oatmeal recipe’, 'Oatmeal ideas you need to try’. The audience started laughing.
“All right, all right,” Jimmy held up his hands. “I can explain. The other day was Mother’s Day, and my kids and I wanted to make my wife a special breakfast, so we had to help ourselves to YouTube.”
“That’s pretty cool man!” exclaimed Chris.
“Yes, my wife ate her breakfast,” he laughed and picked up his mobile phone. “And she’s still alive for now, so it was a triumph.”
On the other side of New York City, you were watching the show with amusement, curled up next to Dodger on the couch. You were so engrossed that you barely noticed Chris’s Whatsapp icon pop up.
“Show us the last message you sent on Whatsapp” Jimmy read out eliciting cheers from the audience. “Come on!”
Chris reddened and ran his hand over his face.
“Alright, alright,” he began to laugh nervously. “It says there the last message I sent, the person too?”
“Well, you have to put the mobile phone down,” Jimmy laughed.
“Okay,” Chris started to look up. “Last text message…” he took a breath and looked at Jimmy hesitantly.“Oh man…”
Your last conversation appeared before everyone’s eyes, showing only the last photograph you had sent him with Dodger and Chris’s reply 'I love you both’. Chris’s countenance showed an inner nervousness, hidden in a nervous laugh and flushed cheeks.
“Wait, wait,” Jimmy said looking at him and frowning “She’s Y/N Y/L/N with your dog? With Dodger?”
The audience exclaimed a sweet 'aw’ when they got a glimpse of the photograph, but Chris was scratching his beard nervously.
“This is really sweet!” said Jimmy looking at Chris, “This is really cute.” “I know, I know,” Chris commented, nodding slowly.
“Are you two-?” asked Jimmy hesitantly, to which Chris took another breath, somewhat embarrassed by the situation.
“I think so,” Chris laughed nervously. “I mean, I don’t know what’s going to happen after this.”
Jimmy laughed, accompanied by the audience.
“Don’t worry, don’t worry,” Jimmy handed the mobile phone back to Chris. “We’ll invite Y/N over next week and let her have her revenge on you.”
Both the audience and you from your living room started to burst out laughing. Contrary to what you might have thought right now, Steve wasn’t angry at all, not even annoyed, you were even a little relieved. Your relationship had been made known to the world naturally, as if you were just another couple texting each other and telling each other how much you love each other. Now you just had to face a new day-to-day life.

Fox Mulder’s Guide to Building a Pool: part 1
A/N This is in answer to an anon prompt: Mulder builds a pool in the yard. It ran away from me so I’ll post it in two parts.
This is set post IWTB and assumes Season 10 didn’t happen. Because it shouldn’t have, am I right? Angsty to start with.
Summer He started one night, when the moon hung low and the stars were pegged out haphazardly in the midnight sky. His mind and his heart hadn’t stopped racing for hours, as though he were filled with cosmic energy. Outside, in flannel and old jeans, scuffed and muddied boots, he picked up the old shovel propped against the side of the rickety shed and dug until his fingers froze around the splintered handle, until the blisters on his palms burst, until the disquiet in his gut diffused.
It was supposed to be a vegetable patch but by the time the dawn broke through, he realised it was in the wrong spot – shaded by the house and in the area of the land where the ground was rubbly and dry. The fertile patch was on the other side of the property, where the trees shed their leaves and mulched the earth naturally.
If there was anything Mulder was known for, it was his tenacity. Scully once told him he’d use a backhoe to dig for the truth. Well now he’d dug a ditch with a shovel and he was going to make something of it. As he massaged the pain from each knuckle he surveyed his night’s work. The sun’s rays hit the turned earth like laser beams, and he had an epiphany. A swimming pool. He was building a swimming pool. A white whale, the truth or a swimming pool. What did it matter as long as it was something he believed in? And just for a moment, in that warm spotlight, the dried out flower of hope bloomed in his chest.
The summer was long, dry and hot. So hot the tarmac melted on the roads, his tomato plants frizzled to brown and he lost his appetite for everything bar an ice-cold beer on the verandah after a day of digging. His routine was solid, despite the meteorological obstructions. He rose early, napped during the day, and worked through mosquito-filled twilights. In his downtime, he googled construction methods, materials, liners, water collection, filtration. On most days, he imagined himself ploughing through the water on warm evenings and chilly mornings, muscles burning, lungs protesting, body thrumming. On good days, he imagined Scully sitting under a shade umbrella sipping lemonade and reluctantly agreeing to take a dip with him, her lithe body pressed against his as they waltzed through the water together. On really good days, he imagined William paddling about in water wings, and squealing as daddy jumped in too close and made a big splish-splosh.
Scully arrived one afternoon, late. She hadn’t visited in a while, he hadn’t made his customary Sunday night call for…he couldn’t actually remember and when he saw the thunderous look on her face, he realised he hadn’t charged his phone for days.
“Didn’t you check your messages, Mulder? I lost count of how many I left. Your machine probably reached its limit.”
Rubbing the back of his neck with a towel, he looked over at the flashing red light and a pang of guilt twinged under his ribs. “I’ve been busy, Scully.” He thought she’d be pleased. That’s what she wanted, wasn’t it? To get him out of his office and back into the real world. Whatever that meant. They’d both seen the real world with its edges peeled back and its slimy, slithering insides exposed. He wasn’t sure he wanted to prod that beast anymore. She’d already turned away from that darkness and found her shining light under the fluorescent gaze of God in Our Lady of Sorrows.
She looked him up and down with doctor’s eyes. The cold blue gaze causing a shiver to creep down his spine and he had to look away. Her ability to see right through him, past his calloused skin and into the sinewy mass of his body always unsteadied him. She was appraising his physical health and his mental wellbeing. He straightened his shoulders, brushed a clump of mud from his sleeve and offered her a drink.
“Chilled water will be fine,” she said. “I’m driving.”
Well, he knew that. How else would she get here? But more importantly, where else did she have to be. She was dressed sharply, not for the hospital. Something about the lower neckline and the softer palette made his brain wander places he didn’t want to go.
“I’m sorry if I’ve put you out,” he said, emptying ice into the glass and wondering where he put that lemon.
“It’s no bother, Mulder, to come here. You should know that. It’s just that I get…”
“You don’t need to worry about me,” he said, and not so long ago he would have laid a hand over her shoulder or collected her hand in his. Instead, he looked at her and smiled, trying to soften that cool scrutiny. “I’m doing okay.” He didn’t add despite you leaving.
She looked down at her shoes – shiny beige courts with a high heel. He could see her reflection in them. The mouth closing in relief, or maybe irritation. She chuffed. “If you’re going to tell me you’re a big boy, Mulder…”
Palms up in surrender, he shook his head, cracked open a soda.
“Mulder, you shouldn’t drink…”
“I know about the dangers of too much sugar, Scully, I’m a big boy.”
He showed her his work. She trod carefully over the dry earth, held her cross as she surveyed. He had a sudden longing to see her in a white vest dampened with sweat, cuffed denim shorts, heavy work boots, digging alongside him.
“And this is going to be a pool?”
“Can’t you see it? Long lazy evenings dipping our toes, sipping gin cocktails as we swat away bugs, brisk morning swims to shuck off those pains au chocolat?” He saw her then, zinc strips over her cheeks and shoulders, straw hat pulled over a lazy ponytail, sunglasses perched on her nose, lowering herself in.
“Mulder, I don’t…”
His chest burnt, like his lungs had crumpled in the storm of a wildfire. He took the handle of the shovel and chopped at the edge of the hole.
“It’s a nice spot,” she said, after a moment gazing out to the horizon. “It’ll be quite something.”
“When I finish,” he added.
Fall
Amber leaves danced on a shimmying breeze, some floating to the ground in theatrical zig-zags. On the other side of the house, the digging was complete. He’d hired an excavator in the end, his knees and back creaking for weeks to remind him of his advancing years and his inability to do everything alone. He’d hired a contractor to remove the dirt and ordered the steel bars for the frame. Scully came by more of
en, intrigued, as she put it, to see how the pool project was coming along. She called to say she was coming Sunday afternoon and would he mind if she stayed a bit longer? He spent all Friday in a mania of dusting and filing and wiping down surfaces. Nesting, they called it. He patted his belly and shook his head. He was becoming quite ridiculous; DIYing and getting giddy when his ex promised to drop by.
In the cupboard next to the stove, he found a stack of old cookbooks, dogeared pages and horrific images of antiquated dishes like jellied salads and ham and banana hollandaise that viewed more like one of Scully’s X-Files autopsies. Amongst them was a treasured find. Betty Crocker’s New Picture Cookbook – a book his mother had used religiously. Grease marks and flour crusted over the pages of cakes. He zipped out to the supermarket and picked up the ingredients he would need and set about baking.
His cake was a simple vanilla sponge but he enjoyed the science of the task, the weights and measures, the timing, the temperature control – the very precision of it all. As he watched it rise, he recalled childhood birthdays, where his mother toiled away for hours icing, sculpting edges, piping, creating dreams. There were castles and race-cars and trains and poodles. Parties were ended with the ceremonial cutting and handing out of slices to guests. He had always felt special those days. But after Samantha’s abduction, she stopped the tradition. She bought shop-baked cakes, refused him parties, spent his birthday barely tolerating the day and Samantha’s sipping brandy.
By the time Scully arrived, tea was steeping, the table was set with tea-cups and saucers, side plates, and the iced cake stood on an elegant glass platter that held it above the timber surface.
“What’s all this?” she asked, hanging her bag off the back of the chair. “Is the Queen coming over?”
He poured her tea. The colour of it in the white porcelain cup reminded him of her hair against the pillow slip of their bed. “I hope not. She only likes Black Forest Gateau and you didn’t leave any jars of maraschinos.” She laughed softly, just like she would laugh with him during cosy evenings on the couch, rolling her fingers over his bicep, planting sweet kisses along his jawline. Back when it was just them against the world. Not them against the world and then each other.
“The colour is like those Caribbean island beaches,” she said, dotting her finger into the icing on her slice. “Azure.”
Her tongue licked at the sweet blue paste and he wanted to say he chose it because it was like her eyes, that that was what he missed so hard, so deeply, he wanted to say that he was sorry. He couldn’t tear his gaze from her, this simple act of eating that had him enthralled. God, he loved having her over from him, setting her plate just right, pouring the exact amount of granola, spooning whatever yoghurt she was into over the cereal, slicing banana while reading the newspaper. He couldn’t say anything though. All the best words lumped in his throat, as though they were overbeaten and curdled.
Instead, he said, “When Samantha was six, mom made her this cake with blue jello on the top that was supposed to be a swimming pool. I don’t know, I just had this mad rush of nostalgia, finding all those cookbooks and remembering how good it used to be.” He looked up and she was staring at him. “Back then, back home.”
“How’s it going?” she replied, changing the mood in three words. “The pool?”
It was windy again and leaves tumbled across the yard, collected in the gutter, in the drains, against the fences.
“It’s protected from the wind on that side, so I won’t have to keep cleaning out the foliage. The pump should be in soon. Then I’ll organise for the concrete pour, before the weather really turns.”
Her hands were stuffed in her jacket pockets, and she’d hunched her shoulders against the chill. He should phone the concreters tomorrow. Get it done. The tip of her nose turned pink.
“Let’s go back inside,” he said.
“Why concrete, Mulder? Why not fibre glass or a vinyl liner?”
He shrugged as she walked past him and his eyes settled on her hair, falling down her back, unkempt from the wind. She smoothed it down, rubbed her hands together, sat back at her seat and took another slice of cake.
“With a more solid foundation,” he said, “it should last longer.”

Yours Truly [Part Five]
Summary: Chris’s parents visit for Layla’s birthday; his outburst during a discussion with his mother surprises everyone. Pairing: Chris Pratt x OFC, Chris Evans x OFC Word Count: 1650 Warnings: Mentions of divorce and abandonment. A/N: This fic was previously posted on my multi-fandom account; in honor of OC Appreciation Day, I figured I would queue it all up for your reading pleasure throughout the day! This was a collab with @captain-s-rogers , and I will link her chapters at the end of all of my posts! Some GIFs were difficult to find again, so if there’s no credit, they’re from Google Image Search or from the original post.
July 1
Caroline,
So, you don’t have it bad for Chris? Then explain to me what that was after the debate! If you don’t have it bad for him, I’m going to venture to say that he has it bad for you. Drunk words and actions are sober thoughts.
As for Chris here, I don’t think he’ll be falling in love with anyone anytime soon. I think he’s still getting over his ex-wife, and I should probably figure out where I’m working next year before I start something with someone.
Layla’s birthday is today. We have invited a few of her friends, and Chris’s parents drove down from Minnesota for a long weekend. Seems like a far drive for a few-days’ stay to me, but Layla is happy to see them, and that’s all that matters. It will be a small affair, but it will be exactly what Layla asked for.
I’ve got to finish hemming my dress before the party, then bake and decorate cupcakes … summer procrastination at it’s finest over here!
Write soon and tell me more about Chris and the campaign. I can’t get enough of your letters!
Yours truly,
Sadie
The whirring of the sewing machine came to an abrupt halt when Sadie let her foot off the pedal. She snipped the thread and her dress was freed from the machine. After trimming the tails off a few more threads, she held it up in front of her; this new sundress was already one of her favorites.
Once the cupcakes were baking, she got Layla through the bath, then left it up to Kathleen, Chris’s mother, to dress the girl. Chris and his father, Daniel, had been up early to do the day’s chores before the party. There would still be the evening feeding of some of the animals, but that wouldn’t interfere with anything they had planned for the day.
“Adie! Will you put my bow on, please?” Layla pleaded, coming into the kitchen where Sadie was beginning to frost the freshly cooled cupcakes.
Sadie took the bow from her and crouched down to Layla’s level. “Your grandma made such a pretty braid in your hair!”
“Thank you,” Layla said, sitting still until the small bow was secured at the top of the braid, just above the nape of her neck. She turned and kissed Sadie on the cheek, then ran off to find her grandmother again.
Sadie got in the shower then, washing up quick so she could blow-dry and curl her hair when she got out. She donned her new dress and applied some natural makeup before slipping into a pair of sandals.
She literally bumped into Chris as she exited her room; he had been headed her direction, it seemed. Sadie chuckled at the mishap along with him and asked what she could help with.
“This tie,” he groaned. “I don’t wear one too often, but Layla said everyone has to dress their best, and I don’t want to let her down. A polo and jeans didn’t seem good enough. Can you help me?”
Sadie swallowed hard and nodded. The man wasn’t long out of the shower, and he smelled positively … well, manly. Not that she minded that smell of a hard’s day’s work, either. Today though, his smell combined with their proximity made Sadie’s heart beat even faster.
Chris lowered himself to her eye level; Sadie cleared her throat and forced herself to concentrate on the task at hand, and not the handsome blue eyes watching her face while she worked.
“I’m sure Daniel taught you how to do this,” she said, tightening up the knot at his neck. “All done.”
“He did,” Chris replied, turning to the hallway mirror to make a few minor adjustments and roll his sleeves up to his elbows, “but I don’t do it often enough, and he’s busy cleaning up himself.”
Sadie nodded and moved past him toward the front of the house. Guests would be arriving soon, and if she didn’t get her head out of the clouds, she would be no help during this birthday party.
Layla’s party was perfect. She hadn’t been allowed to see the decor on the back patio until it was party time, to allow for an element of surprise. She jumped up and down and squealed with excitement over the balloons and streamers and flowers before running off with her friends to the bouncy house Chris had rented and set up not far from the covered patio. The adults could relax in the shade where the fans were and still keep an eye on the kids.
“Chris, will you take a picture of Layla and me?” Sadie requested when the cake was brought out. “To send to Caroline.”
“Yeah, of course.”
Layla hopped up in Sadie’s lap near the cake and both girls smiled big for the camera. Sadie thanked Chris, then switched him out places so he could do the birthday song and candles with his daughter.
By the time all the guests went home, Layla had fallen asleep on the couch. Sadie offered to take her to bed; Chris smiled a thank you. He kissed his daughter on the forehead as Sadie walked by, then went out to the patio to help his mother clean up while his father worked on deflating the bouncy house.
Sadie managed to get Layla out of her party dress and into pajamas, and get the bow out of her hair, before tucking her cozy under the covers. Layla yawned and her pretty blue eyes looked up at Sadie.
“I think it’s okay Mama wasn’t here,” Layla said, “because then you wouldn’t be here. I love you, Adie.”
Sadie smoothed back Layla’s hair from her face. “I love you too, Layla.”
With a smile, she switched off the light and pulled the door almost closed. She headed out to the patio to help with the clean-up; heated voices stopped her at the back door.
“Mom, there’s still two months before Layla starts school. I’m not sending her up to Minnesota for the rest of the summer. I can’t.”
Kathleen sighed. “You can, you just won’t. You need time to heal from Emily leaving, sweetheart. Give yourself that time.”
“I’m over Emily — I’ve been over her. Things were bad for a while before she left, all right?” Sadie’s heart broke for Chris but also jumped at his confession of being over Emily. “Layla doesn’t need any more big changes.”
“Is this about Sadie? She’s a wonderful woman, but I can ready Layla for kindergarten, too.”
Sadie peered around the corner just in time to see Chris run a hand over his face and shift his weight to one foot in frustration.
“It’s about me not wanting to be away from my daughter, and — you know what, yeah, it is about Sadie. Layla loves her!” His voice raised even higher when he said, “I’m not going to let her lose another mother!”
Sadie gasped and lost her balance, causing her to slip against the doorway she had been leaning on and out onto the porch. She gained a good scrape on her elbow and up towards her wrist in the process.
“Sorry — I’m sorry,” Sadie stuttered out as she righted herself. “I’ll just — I’m gonna clean this up.”
She was rinsing off her elbow at the kitchen sink when Chris came inside. It was an awkward angle, and he offered to help her.
“Hop up on the counter there.” He wet a washcloth and cleaned the dirt from her scrape before going to the medicine cabinet for antibiotic ointment and a bandage.
The gentle way he applied the ointment and then the bandage made Sadie swoon a little more. In the weeks since she had come to the Pratt farm, the closed-off, rough man had warmed up, opened up, and began to work his way into Sadie’s heart. Between moments with Layla and early morning breakfast chats, as well as late night talks after Layla went to bed, Sadie knew she wasn’t going to have a hold on her feelings for much longer.
“Sadie, what I said about Layla not losing another mother,” Chris spoke up, breaking into her thoughts, “it may not have come out the way I intended.”
“It’s okay,” Sadie shrugged. She wanted to tell him that she would be all right if he meant it the way he said it, but she didn’t want to ruin the moment. “I’m not upset.”
“Good,” Chris smiled, helping her off the counter. “Thank you for everything today, Sadie. You made Layla’s day really special. And my birthday the other day. Means a lot.”
Sadie smiled. “It’s my pleasure, Chris. Really.”
She didn’t know it then, but that was the moment Chris realized he was falling for her. He stared at her long enough though, Sadie cleared her throat and excused herself to go outside and help with finishing the clean up from the party.
Sadie was in pajamas, reading through job opportunities on her laptop when Kathleen came to her door.
“Am I interrupting?”
Sadie closed her laptop. “Not at all. Everything okay?”
Kathleen took a seat on the edge of the bed. “I want to apologize if I offended you with what I said earlier. It’s nothing against you. Daniel and I just worry so much about Layla and Chris. Emily left them so suddenly — I won’t get into that. I appreciate what you’re doing for them, more than you know. Even the things you don’t know that you’re doing.”
“As I told Chris earlier, it’s truly my pleasure. I appreciate you clearing that up for me.” Sadie smiled and leaned over to hug the older woman. Before Kathleen could leave, she asked, “What do you mean, the things I don’t know I’m doing?”
Kathleen simply smiled and bid the younger woman good night.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME CHAPTER 20/38
Rating: Mature
Read at Ao3
Start at the Beginning
Maggie is confused, Kara is busy, and Alex is taking a boat tour of a river in Egypt.
Thanks to @ifourmindbeso for her great work as a beta. Any remaining mistakes are entirely my own.
Chapter 20 – Building the Brand
Kara touched the button on the holoprojector and the green screens behind her disappeared, replaced by the interior of one of the guest lounges in Sanctuary. The backdrop was chosen carefully. The room could have been part of any structure anywhere on Earth. It was unusual only in the curved walls, circular floor plan, and the paintings hung on the walls. One of her and Kal’s fathers, Zor-El and Jor-El standing together in their science guild robes. There was one of Lara holding Kal, and one of Kal sleeping on the couch with Krypto curled around him, and another of Lara holding Kal, with Jor’s arm around them both, and Krypto at their feet. The painting of her mother and Astra, as well as the paintings of her with her mother and father, and her with Astra were carefully kept out of frame of the projection. She wanted to share as much as she could with the world, but there were limits, having Astra’s face plastered all over YouTube would make it impossible for her aunt to ever have a civilian identity.
“You ready?” Wilma asked.
Kara nodded. “As long as my cape is on straight,” she said.
“You look fine,” Marcus said. “After all, I did your makeup.”
Kara and Wilma both laughed and Wilma reached over and gave Marcus a bit of a shove, then hit the record button on the camera.
Kara fixed her gaze on the camera and smiled.
“Good morning YouTubers,” she said. “Supergirl here, bringing you the first of what I hope will be a number of videos. Now, I’m sure right now a lot of you are asking why I’m taking the time to do YouTube videos instead of flying around helping people, and that’s a great question. The thing is, I can do both. Even my cousin doesn’t spend all of his time flying around in his cape, and just like him, I’m able to use my super hearing to listen for trouble in the city while I take a minute to talk to you about things that are important. On top of that, the wonderful people at Catco have offered to edit the videos for me, and help me out by moderating the comments section, so I can devote more time to helping people.
“Some of you may also ask why I want to do these videos in the first place, or why Catco’s helping me set up a Facebook page, an Instagram account, and a Tumblr. After all, my cousin doesn’t have them. Neither does Batman or Wonder Woman. So, why me? Why am I taking the time?
“My cousin once said, when asked what he stands for, ‘Truth, Justice and the American way.’ I think that’s a wonderful sentiment. My mother was an Adjudicator. Truth and Justice were her purpose and goal in everything she did. To see my cousin take up that mantle warms my heart, and makes me feel like a bit of my mother lives on in him. And the American ideal is a good one. A place where everyone is free, where we come together, regardless of race, creed, or place of birth, and work together to build a better life and a better future.
“But that’s not why I put on this suit. I wasn’t sent here to carry on my mother’s fight. You don’t need me for that. You already have police officers, lawyers and judges working to ensure justice is done. You already have people like Cat Grant, Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Vicki Vale and Perry White working to find the truth. What I believe this world needs more of is compassion. Someone to lend a hand, to help when we’re in need, and to offer hope that that we can make it through today, and that tomorrow will be better.
“My cousin once told Lois Lane that this symbol means hope, and he’s right. In one of the languages of my homeworld, it is the glyph for the word hope. But more than that, it’s the Coat of Arms of the House of El, and it stands for our Motto. El Mayarah. It means Stronger Together. I believe that with all my heart. That we are stronger together than we are apart. That we can help each other and give each other hope. That hope is stronger than fear, and the only way we can move forward.
“That’s why I put on this suit. That’s why I’m out there. That’s what I believe in. Hope, help and compassion for all. Human, or alien. That’s what I want these videos to be about. A way to reach people I can’t just by flying around the city. A way to remind people that someone cares, and a way to remind people that all it takes for them to be a hero, is to care, to reach out and offer a helping hand, or a shoulder to lean on when someone needs it.
“Now, I’m sure there are those of you out there who are going to say that this is nothing but a publicity stunt. There are already people out there who are questioning my motives, asking why I’m doing the things I’m doing. To those people, I want to say this. If you don’t want me here, if you don’t want me in the skies above National City, or in the streets helping people, then do better. Make the world better. Make a world that doesn’t need me or my cousin. Make a world that doesn’t need Wonder Woman or Batman. We would all love to live in a world that doesn’t need us, where we don’t hear cries for help, or sirens in the distance.
“For the rest of you, that’s all for this video. I’m Supergirl Zor-El here on YouTube, Facebook, and Google+, SupergirlZorEl, no spaces or dashes, on Tumblr and Instagram, and @SupergirlZorEl on twitter. Also, if you’re interested in information about my homeworld of Krypton, check out my website at kryptonremembered.com. It’s got everything from a full Kryptonian encyclopedia, to an archive of Kryptonian music, recipes for how to make traditional Kryptonian food using Earth ingredients, a library of Kryptonian literature, and even courses that will teach you how to speak, read and write Kryptahniuo, which was our main language, and Kandorian, Vath, Twenx, Urrikan, and Lurvanish, the five classical languages spoken on Krypton prior to the planetary unification. All the content is available for free, in fifty different languages.
“Until next time, may Rao light your way.”
“And we’re out,” Wilma said.
Kara smiled. “How was that?”
“Good,” Wilma said. “I want to do one more take, just to be safe.”
Kara nodded. “Okay.”

I know it’s cheating a bit, but for my first Instagram post, I wanted to share something really special. This is a picture of Argo City near sunset. According to the time stamp, it was taken about five Kryptonian days, or ten Earth months before I was born. The tall building in the middle of the image is the House of El’s Argo City Tower. You can actually see my childhood bedroom in this picture. And off to the left, you can see the Citadel, where my mother worked with other Adjudicators to bring justice to our world.

“I’m not sure whether to be proud or jealous,” Kara said as she leaned back in the chair, a smile on her face. “The YouTube video’s only been up for two hours, and Supergirl’s already topped half a million followers.”
“Did you really think our girl would do any less?” Cat asked, causing Kara to jump a bit. She turned around, looking away from the bank of displays she’d been looking at, and forcing herself not to smile as Winn scrambled to take his feet down off his desk.
“I wasn’t sure,” Kara said. “She’s got a good message, but she’s only been around a few weeks.”
“True,” Cat said, with a slight tip of her head in acknowledgement, “but in that time, she’s managed to save a plane from certain disaster, foil a bank robbery, prevent a disaster at the docks, took down a villain that her cousin couldn’t defeat on her first try and kept a cruise ship from going down in the middle of National City Harbor. Not to mention what she did at the Gala.” Cat raised her index finger and gave it a little wag. “No, our girl’s star is definitely on the rise. The public is hungry for Supergirl, and she’s using that so well, it’s almost like she learned it from me.”
Kara knew she was blushing and couldn’t quite meet Cat’s eyes. She could feel the pride radiating off Cat, and she could feel the butterflies in her stomach. She wanted to kick herself to make it stop, but she couldn’t help it. The other Cat, the Cat in the original timeline, had offered praise so rarely that when she did, it had always had a profound impact. In that timeline, Cat had left, and she’d come back only to die in the Battle of CatCo Plaza. She’d always wondered if things would have been different if she told Cat. Oh, there wasn’t any doubt in her mind that Cat had known in the other timeline, just like there was no doubt in Kara’s mind that Cat knew in this timeline.
The difference was, this time, when Cat finally confronted her with it, she wasn’t going to lie.
“Now,” Cat said. “I believe I was promised a tour.”
Kara looked up, and this time she did meet Cat’s eyes. “Of course, Ms. Grant.” She stood up and led Cat towards the studio. “We’ve got the studio for the YouTube videos set up in here. I just used CatCo’s standard rapid-deployment studio package…”
Kara sat down on the sofa opposite Cat in Cat’s office as Kaldur’ahm carried in a pair of trays. One of them held Cat’ usual sushi order, while the other held a small family-sized Chef’s sampler, and two orders of pot stickers.
“I hope you didn’t have plans for lunch,” Cat said as Kaldur’ahm set the trays down.
“No,” Kara said. “Nothing urgent. And if something comes up…” she held up her phone, “people know how to reach me.”
“Good,” Cat said, then waited as Kaldur’ahm finished setting the trays down, and left Cat’s office. “I have to say, you did a good job finding Jacob.”
“Jackson,” Kara said, “but you already know that.”
Cat just smirked as she reached for her chop sticks. “I’m impressed. You put together an entirely new department in the span of five days. I wouldn’t have bet you could get the construction permits cleared in under two weeks.”
Kara shrugged. “I know people,” she said. “Some of them are on board with what Supergirl is trying to do. A little bit of judicious name-dropping, a little bit of helpful arm-twisting here and there, and some careful horse-trading.”
“Hmmm… I’d be curious as to what kind of horses were being traded.”
Kara picked up a pot sticker. “One of my contacts may have traded the design for a meta-human containment system to the city in exchange for expediting the permitting process.” She tossed the pot sticker in her mouth, moaning softly as she bit into it.
“That’s quite a trade.”
Kara nodded. “A good one,” she said. “National City PD gets something it needs, and so do we. Everyone wins.”
Cat smiled at her. “You keep surprising me. I still don’t think I’ve figured out just how badly I’d underestimated you.”
Kara laughed as she started mixing wasabi into her soy sauce. “I’ll take that as a compliment,” she said.
“You should,” Cat replied. “I hope you don’t mind working over lunch. I have the initial proposals in from the first batch of licensed Supergirl merchandise, and I wanted to go over them.”
“Okay,” Kara said. “Any trouble with the requirements she put down on the clothing and toy makers?”
“The clothing companies were fine with it, though they wanted to get the standard sizes out right away and release the plus sizes after they had time to do a study on how high demand would be.”
“You shut that down, right away?”
Cat nodded. “I told them exactly what Supergirl said. Everything launches together, or not at all.”
“And the toy makers?” Kara asked.
“Confused,” Cat said. “They had no idea why she insisted on multiple ethnicities for the Supergirl dolls, and they balked when they saw the percentages she insisted on, but when I threatened to take the license elsewhere, they folded like a cheap suit.”
“Good,” Kara said. “We’ll probably get a lot more proposals from them once they work their way through the Encyplopedia. Especially when they get to the section on Garata.”
“What’s that?” Cat asked.
“Supergirl said it was like soccer, with dragons.”
Cat grinned. “Well, whatever charity she eventually designates, they are going to make an awful lot of money.”
“We might have an answer on that soon,” Kara said. “She’s apparently meeting with Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince while they are in town to discuss work with the Wayne Foundations and the Artemis Society.”
“Our girl is going to be awfully busy, between making videos, taking meetings, and rescuing kittens. I hope she isn’t taking on too much.”
Kara reached for another pot sticker, avoiding Cat’s eyes this time. “I worry about that too,” she said. “But I get the impression that she’s got good people backing her up, and she’s being careful to try and build a solid support network that can handle everything except the actual punching and flying.”
“What about the other aliens. The ones that showed up to the Gala? Supergirl’s Aunt and Uncle?”
Kara looked up from her food, staring at Cat for a moment, before looking down and picking up a piece of spicy tuna roll with her chopsticks. “She’s not ready to talk about that just yet.” She dipped the sushi in soy sauce and popped it into her mouth, chewing slowly, then swallowing. “I know a lot of the news outlets are buzzing about it, but I think she might be willing to address that in another interview soon. Maybe we could even talk her into letting us tape it for a joint release on her YouTube channel and on CatCo’s.”
“You think she’d do a live interview?” Cat asked.
Kara shook her head. “No. Definitely not.” She frowned when she saw the way Cat’s face fell. “Ms. Grant, I don’t think it’s a matter of trust. I think she’s afraid that it might provoke an attack on CatCo. Reactron attacked her while she was pulling people out of a wrecked bus. If someone knew where she was going to be for a long period of time, they might attack just to get at her. That’s why she brought in the hologram projector for her video. She doesn’t want anyone to know they’re being taped in this building.”
“I hadn’t thought about that,” Cat admitted.
“Considering how many times the Daily Planet has been attacked by someone looking for Superman, I’m sure it’s something she’s given a lot of thought,” Kara said. She looked into Cat’s eyes, making sure Cat understood the weight of her words. “She’d never forgive herself if something were to happen to you, or anyone else here, because of her.”
Cat stared back at her for a moment, and Kara could feel how thin the pretense that Cat didn’t know was wearing. Part of her wondered if she should just say it, but something was holding Cat back. In the other timeline, Cat had confronted her as soon as she realized. Here, Cat knew, and Kara knew she knew. Neither of them were being subtle about it, but for some reason, Cat hadn’t pushed, and Kara wasn’t quite ready to throw aside that decision.
“Well,” Cat said, “for now, we’ll just have to respect her judgement on that.”
Kara nodded. “Of course.”

Writer’s tag
Thank you for the tag @choicesbyjade - it always impress me how much you can write and the way you change between characters without losing their essence it’s incredible. And that snippet made me really curious about what you’re writing.
Talk about your WIPs I’m going to talk only about the ones that are not sitting forever on my folders. I’ve been writing a modern day AU for Desire and Decorum, and I’ve posted a few chapters and there a lot of things that I’ve done for this one. So far it’s been really fun to write for the whole gang. There’s a drabble for Jaime x MC (WT), and the last part of the still unfinished series The Pursuit of Happiness, the third part of the last chapter has become an endless mess, but I hope to finish it any day now.
What is your favorite/least favorite part about writing? I love most of the things about writing, but possibly my favorite one is to be able to translate in words the images I see in my mind. But I like it all: imagining the dialogues and scenarios in my head, outline the plots, think about the characters’ motivations and research (I live for it! I don’t know how many time I’ve spent googling for travels from London to Istanbul in the 1800s, or the perfect location for Hamid to live in the modern AU, etc). The least favorite is editing, my writing involves a lot of rambling, it’s not concise, I like to explain a lot of things (probably unnecessarily), etc and it’s hard to cut things afterwards.
Favorite character you’ve written? I’ve enjoyed writing for many characters, so it’s hard choosing just one. But I’ll list my top 3: Briar, specially in the modern day AU, Prince Hamid and Annabelle.
What are you planning to work on next? Maybe finish what I’m currently working on? Let’s see what my muse decides.
Which of your stories do you like best? Why? More than a thousand words (D&D - Modern AU) - It’s part of the Desire and Decorum modern AU series and I really loved to bring to life these characters in Contemporary London and talk about photography, which is something I’m really passionate about. Writing Briar’s POV was also something very fun to do!
The Pursuit of Happiness (D&D - Series) - It will always be one of my favorites, because it was the first fiction I’ve written in a long time and was the first I had the courage to actually let other people read (and I’m so happy that I did). I’m mostly pleased with the majority of the chapters, I had a blast writing for Prince Hamid and Elizabeth (even though I may have put them in hell for a while) and I’ve really seen how my writing improved from the first chapter to the last ones, and this made me really happy.
Where does your inspiration come from? I think most of my inspiration comes from books I’ve read, movies and songs. I also get inspiration from people I know and from personal experiences.
Unpopular writing thoughts/opinions? I’m stealing your opinion here, Lori. I also don’t like OOC stories (even though I’ve read one that I liked very long ago and was the reason I’ve found the fandom), it usually bothers me, specially if the character lacks motivations to act the way it does and s/he just turned evil out of a sudden. It’s weird.
Post the last sentence you wrote. “I don’t know… It’s just… When you’re around, it’s hard not to smile.”
Post a snippet
“Lizzy, I'm blind!” Briar shrieked.
“Sorry! I didn't know Eliza had guests! Oh, Briar, is that you?” Edmund saw the two sitting too close on the couch and turned off the lights immediately, “I was just looking for her to help me. But I see you guys are busy with… whatever you might be doing and… well… I’ll leave you to it...”
“Eddie! Come back here!” she looked mischievously at Hamid, “I have a better idea!”
(It’s from a later chapter of Second Chances and from a scene that I’ve really enjoyed writing. So, I couldn’t help it sharing a bit of it)
Tagging: @itsbrindleybinch @pixieferry @flowerpowell @traeumerinwitzhelden @alj4890 (sorry if you guys have been tagged before)
Writer's tag
Thanks for the tag @queerchoicesblog I loved your wip and I can't wait to read the full story 😍
Talk about your WIPs
I have too many wips on my folder (my muse is a wild card) but I'm focusing on two stories in particular: Leo's series and Jax x MC. I've missed writing about Leo. I love how effortless it feels for me to write him and give more depths to his story as he starts a new life on his own.
Jax and Samantha (MC) aren't speaking to each other. He miss her and thinks everything is lost because of the way thing ended. But soon he will find hope again.
What is your favorite/least favorite part about writing?
I love almost everything about it. Musing the scenes in my head, outlining, researching and finally sitting down to write. Even editing is something fun to do. The only thing I really dislike is writing transitions. I suck at it.
Favorite character you’ve written?
I can't choose just one. It's too hard! But the ones I have more fun writing and feel more confident about are Jade (TRR MC), Daphne (D&D MC), Hamid, Liam, Leo and his twins (OCs Ava and Emma).
What are you planning to work on next?
I'll focus on wrapping up TRR 3 headcanons series (Liam and Jade's and Drake's), writing all the pending requests I have for Jax x MC, Colt x MC, Logan x MC and start writing the Halloween inspired fics for October Choices Challenge, which wasn't on my plans but after a night brainstorming with @kennaxval I decided to reconsider it.
Which of your stories do you like best? Why?
A Letter to Elise and Support (TRR): Liam and Jade have the most complex backstories and personalities I've written so far and these two pieces show how devoted they are to each other.
Bonding experiences (D&D): the theme, the characters and the fact that it's a friendship fic makes this story truly special to me.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Books I've read/listened to, films, series and telenovelas I've seen, songs I love, personal stories, dreams I've had... Anything that affects me has a potential to become a story.
Unpopular writing thoughts/opinions?
I hate OOC stories. I always scroll past them. Why spending so much time changing the essence of a character when the writer can just create an OC?
Post the last sentence you wrote.
Still, it was too soon for him to talk about it. So he lied.

Right after shower, she puts on some PJs and quickly drifts off to sleep. Then his phone beeps. A light shade of yellow emerges in the horizon, illuminating the sky. Time to go back.

Progress Update 4
Hey everyone!
It’s time for another “work-in-progress” update, a weekly post where I share my progress of making the AquaDeco mod. I’m almost caught up with the things I have yet to show you. So let’s close that gap!
Today it’s mainly about the “other things” you could find in an aquarium. I’m talking about the backstage areas, the stuff that goes on to keep the aquarium in good condition.
“Bench”
One idea I had floating around in that dark void, was a couch kind of a bench. The in-game vanilla benches, to me, seem mostly suited for outdoor use. Of course, they work on any path, anywhere, but I wanted something softer. More of a lounge-y feel. A couch or a large “Fatboy”.
Here’s (above) a screenshot of the first version. I went for a somewhat more generic design, so it is not only (visually) suited for peeps on beaches. In the image you can see that I’ve stacked a couple of the triangular benches over one another. You can’t really stack benches on the same tile, but the object is so big that two separate benches, connecting to a path corner, overlap.
Although I did like the cosy feeling of a pile of peeps enjoying a lolly.. this iteration didn’t work well, visually that is. The technical side worked fine, but there was a lot of walking/clipping through the object. I was happy with the direction though, so I started adjustments.
Here I’ve made the benches quarter (of one tile) sized. The idea is to be able to make you’re own bench, in a modular way. Or use them for in a diner, or a small toilet for instance.
Another issue came up with this though. Because the benches are placed on the sides of paths, they are offset from the center on the tile grid. Using quarters like this - and being able to pair the up next to each other to make a half, for example - ..it gets fiddly and confusing. It’s not clear to see where the origin of a placed piece is located, and you can easily replace one when accidentally stacked on the same tile. All in all, this design didn’t work as smoothly as I wanted it to be. I do really like the concept, I think this could be really neat and handy..
Talking about visually communicating; When they’re all side by side - and the majority is vandalized - it’s easier to see. But you might not have spotted that some benches, are also vandalized in the first image of the same scene that was shot a bit earlier in time. This is not very helpful. You should be able to see, clearly, what’s going on. This is especially true in a potentially busy theme park with lots going on on-screen.
To display vandalism, he vanilla benches get replaced by a “broken” model variant. This is something (currently, as I’m writing this) that I have yet to learn to implement. If that is possible at all, at this time.
Above you can see that I’ve tested to see if I could hide an object within the bench model. I did this to see if the hidden object would become visible when the bench gets vandalised and thus tilted at an angle. But sadly the object (the trapezoid/cube within the triangle) also tilts with the bench, as a single object.
Fingers crossed things like this will become easier to implement in the future when the modding tool gets an update. Until then, I’ll make the buttons on the couch fabric easier to see (if I didn’t remove them already in the last iteration - if so, I’ll add them, or some other detail), so the tilt is easier to spot. I also wanted to remove the border along the bottom, kept it for this reason (see below: the couch in the middle has one of four vandalized). But, this is the best I can do for now and I hope it works well enough!
Now your guests can have a bit more comfort as they enjoy your aquarium, cinema, theater, restaurant, museum, library etc. And I’ll add a non-triangle one in the meantime, if you want a “regular” version.
Right, enough about that bench! Still keeping it in the homeware realm with another way to chill.
Fans
When I think of the aquarium, a reptile house or any other indoor humid atmosphere at the zoo - or perhaps in an actual, real-life, outdoorsy, tropical climate (not the climate I’m in, or used to) - I remember how warm and humid it is (also, the smell). This might be not as common as a memory, but it is real (I convince myself).
Keeping theme parks in mind, combined with the warmth of the simulated exotic exhibits; I figured that we needed some air!
Aside from the table fan, there’s also a separate fan without a stand. Both can be resized and custom colored. In the image above you can see some tests of applications. Of course you can use the fans for keeping your waiting peeps cool in the queue, build a hovercraft, airship or perhaps using it as a wind effect in a dark ride or coaster. Anyway, you can use it for whatever!
Sadly, does not actually cool anything, it’s just decor. But, it definitely tries;
youtube
This was also to try out some other, less complex animations. Turns out, it works really well. I found a way to avoid the use of invisible collision triggers, which is amazing to know. Doing it this new way makes my animated objects selectable and recolor-able etc. in-game! It’s not a solution for all circumstances, but it’s a good way (easier for the player, as they function like any other object without special cases) to at least try to incorporate in all the animated assets (if the animation is not too complex).
Technical Equipment
If you want to keep your lovely livestock “a bit longer”, you will need to install some hardware to keep them happy!
Here are some pieces to cater to those needs. Instead of making very specific aquatic equipment, I chose to make it so you could build your own - or as a result use it for other things as well. :)
Above you can see a large reservoir, which would be the water filter and a metal foundation plate. Also, a basic metal cabinet, and a monitor screen. I still need to google to find out how these types of “electro technical closets” are called (please fill me in if you recognize something, I used no reference for these :P).
Ah yes, and you might have spotted the buttons and triggers. These could be placed on the cabinets, or be used somewhere else in the park in any combination. I will also add a “facing up” variant of each button and trigger. I mainly based these on how I remember coaster control booths (which is me saying, with no reference but my memory). I used no reference, mainly to not get caught up in too much detail, as they are quite small already. It, again, is more the idea of it, than the actual thing. But, if I missed a crucial part that’s missing, let me know!
One thing that I know is missing, is a water heater/cooler. And other equipments of basic aquarium keeping. Those are still on the to-do list! :)
If you actually hate machinery with a passion, and are only hear for the animals. Thanks for enduring, so much, and here’s something I worked on today:
Work in progress model of the (..or a) new shark! The model in the image here is not done, I’m working on optimizing the mesh and such (this was taken before that). After that will come the animation bit.. But that will be next time! I am still not caught up.
I’ll be on the Parkitect sub-Reddit or in the Discord for comments and such! :)
Thanks!

Augmented Reality Apps for Tourism
Imagine taking a lengthy backpacking trip through Europe with an interactive map of all the cathedrals, museums, castles and other landmarks, complete with information on the cultural significance of each location—all at your fingertips. Augmented reality (AR) has made this a reality. The technology adds digital layers of data to real-world images viewed via a smartphone, helping users gain a more comprehensive appreciation of their surroundings without a cumbersome, physical brochure.
The goal of augmented reality in tourism is to offer travelers additional guidance and entertainment options as they explore new terrain. The first travel app to incorporate AR was Tuscany+, which labeled itself as an “interactive, real-time guide” to help with navigation and cultural learning.
Since then, more and more companies have found ways to improve the tourist experience with augmented reality apps, including unorthodox cases such as Pokemon GO encouraging people to get off their couches and find digital creatures in surrounding areas. AR technology has evolved plenty since its early days, with augmented reality apps for tourism now offering some of the most sophisticated capabilities for travelers.
Picking the Right Hotel
You can read all the reviews in the world about a hotel, but you won’t know what the place is actually like until you get there. Thankfully, AR apps now make it possible for travelers to check out the digs without physically being there in the form of virtual 3D tours of hotels.
Some hotels allow you to examine various room options via the tour, as well as features such as swimming pools, gyms, bars and restaurants. These apps also give users a solid idea of restaurants, entertainment and other tourist attractions near the hotel.
One such hotel that offers an augmented reality app is the Mansion at Casa Madrona in California. The app has been successful in helping the property attract more guests by displaying its amenities and offering them a more personalized experience with accommodations to suit their needs.
Hotels can benefit greatly from the use of augmented reality apps to showcase what’s inside them. Essentially, these apps serve as marketing tools that improve a hotel’s reputation and attract customers.
Finding the Best Route to Your Destination
Traveling used to be a logistical nightmare, as you would have to buy guides with updated bus departure and arrival times, routes and information on the local traffic. Even if you planned your trip to a tee, you might end up on the wrong bus or miss your bus altogether.
App developers have now made it easier to figure out how to get around when traveling. For example, Mapway Limited developed Bus Times London. This app uses augmented reality to create a digital path to your destination through a live feed on your smartphone’s camera. It’s a similar idea to regular mapping apps, but you can see the route in front of you with a higher degree of accuracy.
The app is quite intuitive, as it creates a path that begins with your real-time position, then follows a line that includes a red icon that marks your bus stop. You can also find buses by following the path, and Bus Times London adjusts your path if you deviate from it, finding alternate ways to reach your destination.
While we already have apps for bus routes in certain metropolitan areas, there is a lot of potential to expand this idea to other cities, towns and countries thanks to the magic of AR. With this technology, you can give travelers a good idea of traffic conditions, the weather, bus and train routes and real-time alerts to enhance their itineraries, all in one screen.
Breaking Down Language Barriers
Perhaps the biggest challenge of entering a foreign country is attempting to get a grasp of the language in a short period of time. Many people will buy a traveler’s guide to the city in order to learn common phrases and hand gestures. However, even with these guides, you will still experience difficulty when you encounter a situation you did not anticipate.
Common language barrier issues when traveling abroad include not knowing what to order in a restaurant because you can’t read the language or not knowing if you’re on the right street because you can’t read the signs. AR can now help with such conundrums, as companies like Google have developed advanced translation apps that leverage the technology.
The Google Translate app makes it easy to translate a word into English from another language or vice versa. Nevertheless, the app won’t help if you see a sign in Japanese that you’re unable to translate because you don’t know how to type it in. Enter Word Lens, an extension of the Translate app. This app lets users snap a picture of a foreign language on the streets, on a menu or elsewhere, then the app immediately translates it into the language of your choosing. The app isn’t perfect just yet, but it can handle live translations in 30 languages.
In this case, augmented reality is combined with object identification and translation technology to tackle the language barrier issues that plague travelers. These apps represent one of many ways you can use AR to create a better connection between tourists and locals, allowing users to gain a deeper appreciation of other cultures while also enjoying a hassle-free trip.
Augmented Reality Apps for Tourism: Changing the Face of Travel
With the help of augmented reality, you can help travelers enjoy a tourist experience with mobile apps that cover everything from booking a hotel room to navigating their surroundings to translating foreign languages. AR offers endless business opportunities for companies interested in advancing their position in the tourism industry, attracting customers and increasing their bottom line.

Cherri Rose & Me the morning of the event.
When I was in grade school I had a good friend named Levi. It is safe to say that he was my first major crush. I loved his freckles and odd elastic skin. I would always sit with him on the school bus, invite him to my birthday parties, and one time we watched Ice Age on my parents couch. I bring this up because he was a country boy through and through. Back then he was all about raising sheep and doing various rodeo and 4H clubs. I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure he grew up to be a cowboy. Until last Friday he was the closest thing I had ever gotten to Montana country life. Despite the fact that I was raised here.
I was born in the city, but raised in CowTown USA, and for the last 8 years I have lived in various cities. It is safe to say I am not a small town girl. More then that I am not coordinated in the slightest. There is a reason I failed at sports in school. Heck, I am so clumsy that I couldn’t even run track correctly.
My family was hanging out after our Sunday dinner when my twelve-year-old niece started dancing. Somehow we got on the topic of my horrible (uncoordinated) dancing skills. I told my niece that I used to describe my dancing like the speghetti noodle you slap on the fridge to see if it is cooked or not. The way it awkwardly slithered down was a very close resemblance to my dancing skills. However I have since gained weight so now I dance more like an uncooked egg yoke in a frying pan. Slither, slither.
My mom on the other hand is the complete opposite of me. We may look similar but I am more downtown and she is more L.A. Meaning, I am better served in a coffee shop reading a book and she belongs on Rodeo Drive.
Mom looking good in her cowgirl get-up! Thanks J.C. Denton Photography!
Back to last Friday. My mom and I went to the Chicks N’ Chaps event I wrote about awhile back. Oh man, were we a sight. Uncoordinated me attempting to cowgirl it up and my mom who looked the part but was hating getting her (cowgirl) boots dirty. Oh, LAWRD, have mercy!
Like I have mentioned before Chicks N’ Chaps is an organization of woman who promote the sport of Rodeo all while raising money for families who are battling breast cancer. My mom was sponsored by them and we were honored guests.
To my moms surprise the event was styled by a former friend and coworker of hers, Angela. They apparently lost touch after my mom left her former job at a furniture store and Angela went to Europe. Somehow her friend over heard the planners of the event talk about a woman who was battling breast cancer. They were telling my moms story but Angela didn’t realize who it was. She ended up volunteering to cater and decorate. When she ran into my mom at the event, Angela couldn’t believe the story she heard was a friend of hers that she had lost touch with. Talk about a small world.
Angela & Cherri Rose
Angela & Mom talking
Not only was my mom touched by that little surprise, she also ran into her surgeons mother! Which was also a blessing for mom to hear her story.
Mom talking to her surgeons mother
The event started out with bidding on the silent auction, eating hors d’oeuvres, and greetings. After that we had a local news anchor Jill Valley give a speech about her fight with breast cancer. It was a great speech and I know it touched my mom. Oddly enough they had the same exact type of cancer just on opposite breasts. My mom’s on the left and Jill’s on the right.
News anchor Jill Valley
In Jill’s speech she talked a lot about the negatives of what it is like to fight with cancer. How you literally picture your last moment alive. In my option it was an interesting way to talk about cancer.
I liked it. She was realistic. She gave us the black coffee version without adding in creamer. She let us know that the fight is painful, hard, draining, emotional, but those are all the reasons you have to fight. Fight to survive. Survive for those who love you and need you in their lives. Fight to help others fight. I wish I could be more helpful on the words that were spoken but I am not a poised news anchor and cancer surviver. Sometimes the giver of a speech is the only person that can give it.
After Jill Valley spoke we did the the rodeo events. This is where it got a little crazy, fun, and down right embarrassing. However, we had to give it our all because there was a custom belt buckle up for grabs.
We went to the roping station where we learned to head a steer. I may be saying that wrong… I am really bad at this whole rodeo lingo… One event was called “Pickup Man,” and I was really concerned because I thought we were going to learn how to pick up cowboys. I was like, “umm… I am married…,” My mom’s friend Sarah couldn’t stop laughing. After she caught her breath she explained that Pickup Men are men who “rescue roughstock riders from twistingfury on the hoof, usher bulls and broncs to the exit and vanish into the background.” I had to google that because I still didn’t remember what Sarah said to explain it. I am just glad I didn’t have to sexually exploit myself.
However, I did get “hand’s on” with a cowboy. Every girl’s fantasy right? Though my husband, who recorded the whole thing, said he was likely gay due to the way he was behaving. Whatever, once touched by a cowboy always touched by a cowboy, right?
Nah, it was nothing special I am just trying to make light out of an embarrassing situation. My mom roped her steer in her second try. Her pom pom days gave her the advantage. I am sure of it. I on the other hand twirled around with the rope not really understanding the concept. Hence the cowboy having to wrap his arms around me and guide me through it. Fortunately, my husband caught it all on video. Lucky us.
After the roping station we headed over to ride Mighty Bucky. At first mom didn’t want to do it and told me that I should do it anyways. I told her that there was no way in hell I was getting on a fake bull that wasn’t even mechanical but driven by a cowboy who “pumped” the fake bull up and down.
It had embarrassing written all over it. I told my mom that if she did it, I would. So after much convincing my mom hopped on the fake bull and rode it like a real cowgirl. It was the funniest thing I have seen in a long long time. I was in tears and almost peed myself because I was laughing so hard. She was wearing a denim skirt so when she first got on she accidentally flashed the world but she made this cute “ooo” sound and squeezed her knees together. She held her umbrella in one hand, because she can’t be in the sun for too long, and the the cowboy began to move the fake bull. She did it so well, hootin’ and hollerin’. She owned the bull..it was so great.
After she was done my heart sank and embarrassment flooded through me. She did it, so now I had too. Oh crap.
Once again mom pulled it off way better then I did. Uncoordinated me. I didn’t even understand the concept of wrapping my legs around the bull tightly. The cowboys kept trying to get me to hold my legs down. Beyond that I kept screaming because for some reason I was scared of the fake bull. I ended up jumping into another cowboys arms just trying to get off that thing.
Remember, the custom belt buckle I said was up for grabs? Well, my mom won! She is amazing.
After the cowgirl training they served up dinner and families joined the party. We listened to music, bid on the auction, went to the photo booth, and bought raffle tickets. They had a 50/50 raffle going on. Which meant that if you won, 50% of the proceeds made on Friday’s event went to Chicks N’ Chaps and the other 50% went to you.
You wouldn’t believe it but my parents won that too. They didn’t keep the money though. They gave it right back to the clinic.
I would also like to mention the photographer they hired for the event, J.C. Denton. He was very friendly and even snapped a few photos of my family using my camera. A lot of photographers get upset about there rights to photograph the event they were hired for. Not him though.
He was nice, friendly, and very talented. He had a drone going around the whole event capturing images. Like the one I used as my featured photo. So if y’all could do me a favor and like his Facebook page it would be an awesome help. I know how hard it is as a photographer to gain the attention you need.
Overall the whole event was very fun and I am so glad we were able to be apart of it. I have more photos on my Facebook page, DC Creations and I am sure J.C. Denton Photography has the official ones on his page too. So Check them out and make lots of comments! I would love to hear from y’all.
For now, this cowgirl is out!
Cowgirl IT UP! (Chicks N’ Chaps Event 2017) When I was in grade school I had a good friend named Levi. It is safe to say that he was my first major crush.
