Okay besties so lately I’ve been super fixated on trying to find different geoglyphs and other cool geological features on Google Earth

I’ve been especially interested in the Nazca lines and it was kinda hard finding a lot of them??? I still haven’t found all of them lmao there are so many :’) but when I was trying to find them at first I was super frustrated because I tried looking up some coordinates and I couldn’t find ANYTHING so I basically said “FINE I’LL FIND THEM MYSELF 😠😠😠😠😠” and now I’ve got a decent amount of coordinates for anyone who might want them :p

How many generations would it take the population to change their circadian rhythm when moving to a new planet? Their original planet had 22 hour rotations but their new planet has 38 hour rotations. Also, how would the generations in between adapt to life/arrange schedules when their physical cycle doesn't match the planet's day/night? If someone say ate breakfast at 9AM daily according to their own cycle, their breakfast time will vary at different times of the local day. Sounds rather confusing.

Tex: Chronobiology is a bit of a specialized field, and because of that, there’s still a lot of research being established about the subject. I haven’t found a lot of research on the presumed epigenetic component of altering the CLOCK gene (and and assorted related genes) that govern the circadian rhythm, but I’m going to guess that an individual could slowly adapt to a new planet, and that those adaptations would be reflected genetically in their lineage. How these changes show up - and correspond to the original expression of the gene(s) - is currently unknown, but since this is your world, you can play around with it.

Feral: Tex has already talked a bit about the biological aspect, so let’s talk about the environmental - specifically the built and social environmental aspects - which play more into your second question. How much control will settlers have over their built environment and how it is lit? What type of built environment will they have? In 2014 Alexander Gerst provided a look at his daily schedule on the ISS, showing a wake-up call for the astronauts at 6am and bedtime at 9:30pm (GMT). Among the other rows showing how their day is segmented into tasks, one row shows Day/Night, in other words when the station experiences daylight and when it experiences darkness. Remember that clocks are made up, and the clock you use to determine when breakfast is is not actually coordinating with the sun. Ptolemy defined a second somewhere around 150CE, but astronomically, not only was that not as precise as what we can measure now, the Earth is actually spinning several milliseconds faster than it was in the second century. Our concept of how many seconds there are in a day hasn’t changed; the length of a second (and therefore a minute and therefore an hour and therefore a day) has. Further, although we have a 24-hour cycle, day and night are not equal lengths throughout the year, yet jobs and schools do not shift timing to match. That’s not how it was a couple centuries ago, before electric lights became the norm, but social time has been quite static since - at least in monochronic cultures. A polychronic culture may adapt very differently to a different daily rhythm.

One note on scientific accuracy (if you care, but you are absolutely not required to care): the rotation of your planet taking 38 Earth hours may be too slow for comfortable habitability far beyond circadian rhythm. It’s not an outlandishly long time, but it’s worth considering what other environmental adaptations your people will need to make. Daily scheduling might be the easiest thing they’ll have to overcome.

Synth: Over the decades there have been several studies on how human circadian rhythms shift when deprived of external cues. There are many body processes that exhibit cyclical patterns (core body temp, various endocrine functions and levels, etc.). A lot of them maintain their patterns with very little fluctuation from baseline even under extended periods of altered or completely absent light cues, or erratic sleep patterns, which indicate that they are governed primarily by internal genetic factors, not external environmental ones. There is of course some variety between individuals, but it all averages out to a cycle just a bit over 24h in length [Stability, Precision, and Near-24-Hour Period of the Human Circadian Pacemaker; Czeisler et al. 1999 → a very summarized overview in this article.]

Now sleep, specifically, can vary a lot more, especially when there are no external signals (called “zeitgeber”, German for “time giver” or “synchronizer”) providing any hints as to time of day. During some “free-running” experiments, where there is a complete lack of zeitgeber and the study participants are left to sleep and wake as they feel like it, sleep patterns would drift gradually forward by around an hour each day, and the subjects’ “days” lengthen toward a period of 25-26 hours, which later studies revealed was due to the influence of artificial lighting [Entrainment of the Human Circadian System by Light; Jeanne F. Duffy and Kenneth P. Wright, Jr.] A study in 1973 by Mills, Minors and Waterhouse had subjects who adopted “days” spanning from 24 to 30 hours, though this study was relatively short, lasting not even two weeks total, so who knows if the patterns would have changed more over a longer timespan.

All the way back in 1938, Nathaniel Kleitman and Bruce Richardson spent just over a month in Mammoth Cave, isolated from the normal light and temperature zeitgeber, with the goal of seeing if they could shift to a 28-hour “day”. Richardson did adapt to it; Kleitman struggled. In 1965, spelunkers Josie Laures and Antoine Senni spent 88 and 126 days, respectively, in caves in the French Alps for a similar experiment, though theirs were free-running instead of strictly regimented. There was a lot more variation in the lengths of their “days”, with extremely erratic sleep cycles. A similar experiment was carried out in 2021, with fifteen participants and lasting forty days (I have not found any research papers related to it, but it was pretty recent and there might just not be that much published yet).

Here’s another paper talking about studies in chronobiology that has more links to other research papers in it that I wanted to include but couldn’t find a good in-line place to put it. Reading up on sleep disorders like delayed sleep phase disorder, advanced sleep phase disorder, and non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder might help with brainstorming too, since they all deal with sleep patterns that don’t fully mesh with the planet’s day-night cycle.

Maybe your characters adapted within a few generations, or considerably more than a few generations. Maybe there are some family lines that never adapt and others that manage it really quickly. Since they have the tech to migrate to a whole other planet, they presumably have artificial lighting, so perhaps they adapt the environment to themselves instead of the other way around, and maintain a semi-artificial “day”. Or everybody gradually time-shifts their way through all the days, going to sleep later and later until they loop back around, or their society splits into the night-owls and the early-birds as people settle into the rhythms that best fit their own natural tendencies and their new society is structured around that.

Tex is right in saying it’ll ultimately be up to you to decide how you want things to unfold in your story. The sample sizes and time spans of the experiments that have been carried out so far are not large, so really the only way we’d ever know for sure how any species would adapt to a planet with a day almost twice as long as they’re used to is to actually go out and settle such a world and see what happens, and we are quite a ways off from being able to do that. It might be more to think about when building your own world, but also opens up narrative flexibility since you can go with whichever options best support the story you want to tell.

If walking from the high school parking lot takes about 10 minutes and their apartment is two blocks away; that means that it would take Danny about five minutes to walk one block. The GIW stopped him about half a block away from his house. Meaning that their initial confrontation happens approx. 7.5 minutes after Danny left the parking lot putting the time at…2:36am. If that’s the time that Danny pushed his panic button and J’onn foregoes the Zeta tubes completely he would get there in approximately 45 seconds. Because Martian Manhunter’s speed is calculated at 7 miles per second. Which then places him going 420 miles per fucking MINUTE. The Watchtower is probably somewhere between the Thermoshpere and the Exoshpere making it approx 190 miles above Earth. 190/7=27.14 But he could be going faster because Full Send, Danny needs him NOW. And yet, within those 45 seconds is when Danny gets horribly injured by the GIW. But Kenna, the math says that he would get there in 27.14 seconds not 45. Well, we have to factor in that he Density Shifts through the Watchtower. No matter how fast he wants to go, he can’t just rip through the Watchtower without a care. So that’s where the extra 18 seconds comes into play. The time is now approx. 2:38-2:39am depending on the seconds and how long J’onn’s conversation with Batman was. Which was not very long to begin with.

There are probably at least 12-15 agents piled into the van. Say Danny is able to take out at least seven of them before he’s shot down, that leaves 5-8 agents for J’onn to take care of. Even if he defeats them all in record time this would still probably take him at least 5-7 minutes because he’s not only fighting the agents but is also having to protect a severely injured Danny. This does slow him down but not by much. After he has secured the unconscious and probably injured agents J’onn would immediately scoop up Danny and head to the nearest Zeta. Why? Because he doesn’t know how exactly suddenly traveling to space at exponential speeds would affect the teen. So he’s playing it safe. Say that takes him another 5 or so minutes because he’s not going full speed due to the aforementioned reason. It is now approx. 2:44-2:46am. Zeta portaling is near instantaneous so I won’t be factoring it into the final time.

Once onboard the Watchtower they would have to travel down several floors to get to the infirmary. This would probably take another 5-7 minutes depending on if they could get the elevators to override and give the Martian and injured teen a straight shot down. As soon as they get there there is a flurry of movement and vague disorder from the sudden appearance of a probably coding patient. They most likely spend another 5 minutes trying to coordinate a plan and gather relevant information on what happened as well as what they need to know about health history. It takes them another 2-3 minutes to prep the OR and Danny. Another minute or so and the surgeon meets J’onn to glean some extra information. He can’t remember anymore so that’s when he calls Jazz. It’s currently between 3:00-3:04am. Jazz is attending the Ivy League School of her dreams, which puts her at 3 hours ahead of where Danny and J’onn had moved post chapter 4. So for Jazz it’s 6:00-6:04am.

I mildly hate myself because I’ve been working on this damn time problem for a good chunk of the past 3 hours. I really hope that I did it all correctly. The zombie apocalypse started when a asteroid crashed into earth, containing frozen alien bacteria inside of it. Humans obviously snooped, samples collected and vials broke, and some poor bloke ended up eating a shitty lab served hamburger with a side of zombie virus!

Zombie apocalypse started in Cuba for the sole reason of angst 🤗

Lance was a med student in NYC before the zombie outbreak, and spent the first two months (its a miracle America didn't go to shit before that) helping in hospitals. Things got so dire it didn't even matter how long yoi were in med school for, hospitals were actively begging for help.

Hunk was in Hawaii at the time of the outbreak, which was a rare part of the world largely left unaffected. In the sense there were no zombies.

Shiro hasn't lost his arm (yet) but he served in the military, same with Adam.

Krolia was special forces in the military. She's like a modern day ninja.

Texas was a police man then fireman, but was largely a stay at home dad once Keith was born.

Shiro is the son of a friend Texas adopted after they died, and technically knew Texas before he even met Krolia.

Adam is from Spain and moved to America after his parents cut him off/disowned him for being gay.

Lance is the oldest sibling! He has (had) 6 younger sisters

The Koganes don't know nearly as much as Lance about zombies bc they managed to fortify their farm and live there for the first 5 months of the zombie apocalypse. They start moving toward DC after receiving a transmission from Matt to head there.

Lance was able to keep in regular contact with Pidge and Hunk before the internet finally went down 3 months into the apocalypse. Pidge tells him to head to DC.

Lance ends up from NYC to Alabama after the internet went down bc he can't read a physical map and Google maps stopped working.

Lance managed to travel by car for 4 months before he realized it was way too loud and had to ditch it.

Krolia advocates so strongly for Lance to stay with them bc she is literally like "omg a baby!"

Texas is willing to go along with anything his beautiful wife's says

Texas killed his first zombie simply bc Krolia told him to, no questions asked. He didn't even know it was a zombie. Krolia was like "kill that bastard!" And Texas was deadass like "yes my queen"

Lance didn't really have to teach Kosmo anything, he kind of just picked things up and did them.

Kosmo is the main reason Lance is alive. Kosmo listens and smells the zombies and alerts Lance.

While mindless, the zombies still have the instincts to avoid the sun as it speeds up the decaying process, thus leading to zombies being more active at night.

Zombies cannot see, they lose this as soon as they turn, but newly turned zombies can hear for the first few months before they decay too badly. At around the 6-7 month mark is when smelling is their only sense left. Despite being dead, they're very strong. They lack the coordination to run fast, but retain the instincts required to hunt.

Among the many victims of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine are some of the most important ecosystems in Eastern Europe: Ukraine’s forests and protected areas.

The full extent of the damage, however, is unknown. That’s why we are launching a new tool that will help open source researchers track destruction from afar.

In September 2022, Ukrainian environmental researchers visited national parks — which are more resilient to climate change than artificial plantings and support crucial biodiversity—to assess damage to forests and wildlife. Initial findings revealed broken trees, damaged root systems due to trench digging and unexploded munitions scattered across protected lands.

“Forests have suffered a lot on the frontline… huge areas of forests are being mined”, Yehor Hrynyk, an environmental campaigner at the Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group, told Bellingcat. But large parts of Ukraine’s vast national parks, mountainous regions and woodlands are inaccessible for on-the-ground environmental monitoring.

That’s where open source techniques come in.

The OSINT Forest Area Tracker

We’ve launched the “OSINT Forest Area Tracker”, hosted on Google Earth Engine. Our tool compares data collected by Sentinel-2, a satellite which detects changes in infrared wavelengths and can be used to study the health of forests. 

The tool reveals the scale and intensity of anomalous changes on land. This narrows down search areas for researchers working on environmental damage in Ukraine. 

Importantly, the map does not attribute the cause of these changes, meaning that it is crucial to find corroborating evidence from other sources before concluding that they were the result of military activity. 

The tool uses the Normalised Burn Ratio (NBR) index to estimate burn severity.

Researchers can also use the tool to select custom date ranges for geographic locations of interest. 

As Ukraine’s official database of protected areas includes over 7,500 sites, we chose not to study them all — among their number are botanical gardens, city parks and archaeological sites. That list also includes many areas in the far west of the country which have not seen intense conflict. 

Therefore, we selected 16 areas which featured the highest number of detected fires over the first year of the war, based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. MODIS is a sensor which allows satellites to detect thermal anomalies, including fires in active war zones (Along with VIIRS, MODIS data can be accessed on the FIRMS system; you can read more about its use to open source researchers here). We also added Svyati Hory National Park because of its proximity to fighting. The tool includes a drop down list preset areas from across the country, including those near military activity. These preset areas are referred to by their acronyms, for example SHNP for Svyati Hory National Park. A full list of these acronyms can be found on the tool’s GitHub page. If researchers are interested in areas of the country not included in the dropdown menu, the coordinates can be entered manually.

While the new tool focuses on Ukraine by default, the methods it employs could be used to analyse areas elsewhere in the world.

Future Development

In the case of Svyati Hory, the tool identified damage to a protected area which deserved further investigation. In the case of the Kinburn Spit, it allowed us to further verify existing open source claims about an attack which had caused damage to a forest – also enriching our knowledge about the extent of the damage, which was less easily visible on real colour satellite imagery. However, both cases demonstrate the importance of corroborating the tool’s findings with other sources before drawing any conclusions about the causes of such damage. The author will continue refining and improving this tool in order to better understand the scale of damage to Ukraine’s many protected areas. Feedback or suggestions for improvements are welcomed. They are known inside as 75th Regiment Specters, a team created by Cpt. Marchant years after her mission in Angola with some help. She picked them personally, since she knew some of the Drill Sergeants. Heard about every one through them and learnt about their missions, later recruited into the team.

Since the very beggining they were told about the only rule Marchant had, "No one's left behind", after that they molded their own code in combat. They are efficient, quick and deadly, and that's all that their allies care about.

Also they have a coordinator and the only thing the team know about them is their nickname "Wraith". Alicia know her tho, an old friend of hers.

For everyone outside of them, they are just a good team. But reality is that after so many years, they've become a little family. Alicia care deeply for them and treat them as their own. All the boys care for her as much as she does.

There was a time when she got really bad injured during a mission (almost didn't make it), and all of them were basically feral going after the enemies seeking vengance. And the last time someone tried to use one of the boys as hostage...well, it isn't hard to imagine, is it? Marchant is feared because of a reason.

Hiiiiiii. I saw other anon's post about any recs of a fanfic that explores into Bart's post-apocalyptic history

I can't promise it will be published, but I wrote a fanfic that sorta explores his post-apocalyptic history two-ish (maybe 3) years ago. I wanted to flesh out Bart's history for this creative writing project I was doing with a couple friends. The writing of the fic itself is unconventional as I originally meant it to briefly cover his history.

At first it was just going to be me jotting down a few key points of what I HC his past to look like. But then what I meant to be an "Abridged history" turned out to be 21 pages on a google doc. I remember basically "word vomitting" it until like 4am. It's a bit of an AU, I lengthened the timespan of when the Reach first arrived to when they finally took over and Jaime went "on mode". Also took a few liberties with Bart's family history (because I love playing around with his Thawne-Allen schmitck)

In case I never publish it, here's a small snippet:

As far back as Bart Allen could remember, his home was the Resistance. He knew only of a world where the Reach controlled and owned everything and everyone - or at least that’s what they thought he liked to believe. A ruined Earth where the skies were forever darkened with clouds and the gross mix of falling snow and ash, all terribly polluted and lifeless. Occasionally, he’d dream of vivid blue skies and the green trees.

The enemy Reach were scary patient, biding their time for decades, sinking their claws into the Earth while posing as peacekeepers and explorers of the galaxy. Their rise to fame was quick and seemless. The alien invaders must have heard of the phrase “all good things come to those who wait”. 

The Reach were also deadly accurate, clearing the chest board in one fell swoop. Superman and Lex Luthor. Batman and the Joker. Metropolis, Gotham, and Happy Habour. Atlantis. Ra’s Al Ghul and his assassins. 

There were rumours that the League of Assassins prompted the Reach’s initial attack, that they had somehow found out what the Reach truly wanted with Earth. It wouldn’t be too surprising given their worldwide intel and perfectly coordinated attacks. After the death of Ra’s Al Ghul, what remained fractured and withered away like the dust of the ruined Earth under the heel of the Reach. 

From both heroic and villainous factions, a few escaped their Reach fates and formed the initial Resistance.

It's kinda ridiculous how I wrote it. Apparently I had written a small summary too so might as well share the summary:

“I did it.”

“Wish you were here, mom.” He lets a wistful moment pass, a note of mournful silence. “Wish you were here, dad.”

He lifts his gaze to the twinkling stars. Fresh air fills his lungs. 

“But I promise you’ll have a better future now, even if it’s one without your son.”

Possible! We still don't know very much about the Golden Age Earth and its politics, outside of a few references to some countries. But not much on the full structure of every continent and country. Some changes must've happened that we simply know nothing about.

Signs in German in Switzerland are not a problem though; German is one of the four official languages in Switzerland and the most widely spoken language.

I also found the other lore tab that mentioned Neu Turbach that I couldn't find earlier in my previous post; it's on the sparrow Common Nobility. Not on Ishtar yet, but in it Devrim speaks to a person from the village called Matthius who also speaks German. They coordinate the rescued civilians, one of whom is Matthius' son, and Devrim also warns that they have Shadow Legion incoming. Relevant bits:

I found one more thing, to add to the confusion. The seasonal lore book, Sightlines, has this cover:

There's coordinates on the bottom! 48.1351° N 11.5820(3?)° E. These are in Munich, Germany, specifically in front of the building called Isar Gate, one of the medieval gates to the city. Google maps view in front, kinda like the drawing on the lore book:

Very intriguing! It's not exactly the same match, but I doubt the coordinates and the drawing of a old-timey tower would be there for no reason. So with specific locations in today's Switzerland and Germany, it's definitely a larger area involved. Turbach and Munich are also not that far apart:

So far the Sightlines lore book only has 1 page and it recounts Devrim's experience of the battle in orbit from his position in Trostland church. Perhaps over the course of the lore book, the plot will move to the location on the coordinates, perhaps some sort of a safer place? Neu Turbach seems to be under attack by the Shadow Legion in the current lore.
