when they were asking for editors i made a vid that was windows xp instead of windows 95 like the pod opening which i realise is just a natural progression of that idea and not unique but when matt mentuoned doing a season 2 windows xp opening for/on podcast 2-4 episodes ago it was like some manchurian candidate shit to me. screenshots of it below i shant post the whole thing for copyrighted music. also on the ep that came out after i submitted it they did indeed explain where the pic on the bottom left(matthew dressed as popcorn) came from. did not receive a response (entirely fair) not only was the video a mess but it comes off as like actual skitz shit lmao it was about the user discovering the location of the supermega fantasy factory and getting nuked as a result

Found a curious little thing in P3 Quarantine, which took me aback ngl

This is going to be quite a post, but I won’t place a tldr because I’m an annoying asshole (scroll down the post, the aforementioned detail is there)

Those who played P1 know that the game was always very vague about its time period. I covered it in another post of mine, but basically Patho Classic takes different features and aesthetics from several decades, namely from the 1910s and up to the 1940s. This is augmented even more by the subtle references to real literature/media/events, which created a sense of the game world being weirdly familiar but you couldn’t grasp what exactly made you feel this way.

Patho 2 (especially the Marble Nest) writing became less subtle, with open (or not that obscured) references to real events and literature. One of the brightest examples is Artemy’s mentioning of the Civil War continuing for the third year already ("Уже третий год идёт гражданская война.". That's a touch quote for the revolver). And this immediately “lands you back to earth” in a way; you understand “Well, this must be the early 1920s then” (obviously with the assumption that it's the Russian Civil War we're talking about). This replica of Haruspex doesn’t necessarily break the immersion, but it makes the storytelling a bit more direct.

And then comes Patho 3 Quarantine. All that I’m going to talk about below started as a mere joke for myself: on Day 8, when the Bachelor tries to board a train, we find ourselves in the middle of the Steppe at night. A bright, full moon is shining.

We know that Pathologic takes place in September. Moreover, on Day 5, at Stillwater on Bachelor’s desk, there is a calendar, which indicates September 3rd (я календарь переверну-AHEM sorry). If this detail is anything to go by, this means the game starts on August 30th, therefore, Day 8 is September 6th.

You might say, “OP, but this might be just a random detail, that doesn’t mean anything”. HAHA do you think I’m called the astronome for nothing? Remember the full moon on Day 8? Assuming that we constrain our range of years to 1910-1940 (explained above), we can calculate for what years the moon was at its brightest on Day 8. Moreover, just the phase is not enough. We need to make sure that the moon was seen at night on that day (i.e. wasn’t below the horizon) on that latitude. I’m taking northern latitudes between 51 and 55 degrees, a typical coordinate for major Siberian cities (I’m taking Novosibirsk, Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude as references here).

I’m using Stellarium, but you can check it just with Google really (I did that as well), it will all have the same result. We have a full moon (or at least a phase close enough to it) for 1914 (phase 95.4%), 1922 (99.6%) and 1933 (96.8%). The moon is above the horizon, and tbh if I had the exact time when the Day 8 sequence happens, I would've tried to approximate the latitude used in the game (if there is one). Anyway, this is just a set of years. That's not that interesting, right? Would have been so, if not for the Bachelor's replica in dialogue with Filat.

(yea it's in russian ik) I'm talking about the second answer option (the highlighted one). There, Daniil inquires if the Termitary has been closed for the sixth day already, since Tuesday. This dialogue takes place on Day 5, September 3rd. Do you see where this is going? If September 3rd is the sixth day since the Termitary's closure, then it was sealed on August 29th. And it was Tuesday. Using New Style (i.e. Gregorian Calendar), August 29th was Tuesday in... 1922 and 1933. Using Old Style (after all, it was used in Russia until 1918), the closest ones are 1923 and 1934. In all honesty, if I were to choose just one of these years, it would be 1922. It makes sense in terms of the moon phase (it got the closest illumination percentage to the full moon, 99.6%). It coincides nicely with that Tuesday situation, assuming that in their country a Gregorian calendar is utilised. The game's aesthetics, Capital's architecture, and overall design are a clear reference to the European 1920s. More importantly, do you remember Artemy's note on the Civil War duration? Yes, technically, the Russian Civil War started in 1917/1918 (thus the third year is 1919/1920). However, I think this is where Pathologic gets back to its usual subtlety in writing. Indeed, the dates are not exact, but it's close enough to ring a bell for most players. Why did IPL include this in Quarantine? There is a certain chance that all the aforementioned details are not intentional and are just a mere coincidence. Maybe it's deliberate. This is, imo, a choice of the player. Eye of the beholder and all that. (for people who scrolled down without reading) Regardless, Pathologic 3 seems to take place in 1922 or, less likely, 1933. Now you are also burdened with the knowledge of it.

GREAT vid of the synopsis over the reservoir fiasco that been empty since at least Feb 2024. There’s a post saying it’s been empty since 2009 based on google earth but it’s also been labeled as unfounded so who knows. Regardless, almost a year empty….to FIX A CRACK IN THE COVER??? The cover?!?

Who cares about the cover? And they never coordinated with the FD.

Could have filled it up any time they wanted.

The infamous smelt is extinct having not been seen since 2012 per article by Gateway Pundit…which is what EVERY water control policy was geared to “protect”.

A Body So Stubborn (Mercenary! Reader fic Pt. 3)

Barely winning against making the TFP bots learn about the horrors of endometriosis, it's the 3rd part to my First Contact AU fic (though it barely feels like one anymore). I ended up splitting this into two parts because this is like 5 pages in the Google Doc.

The third part is finally here! I was going to draw something for it, but I'm currently working on my 2.0 model (Vtubing stuff) so I pushed that off to the side.

“So,” the Cybertronian on the screen tilted his head, “you found a human in a solar system that, as far as our knowledge, has no humans on it?”

“Until now,” Ultra Magnus replied, “according to the files, she was brought to this place at eighteen months old, therefore her connection to her species is nonexistent. She appears to be the only human who’s lived here for any large period of time.”

“There are, however, a group of humans currently on the local planet right now. According to Skids, they’re here to help establish an interspecies alliance. Along with that,” Ultra Magnus showed his datapad; two similar human women on the screen were shown in separate images, “one of the humans of the group appears to have a strong physical resemblance to the one we found. Not only that, she claims that her sister was abducted at eighteen months old twenty years ago.”

“Interesting,” his blue optics flickered, “it’s too similar a connection to be a coincidence. Is Ailith on the Lost Light? I’d like to see her condition for myself.”

“First Aid brought her to the clinic her ship’s coordinates were originally at, Prowl. Once she’s back, I’ll contact you again.”

“Very well. Goodbye for now.” The video feed of the officer ended, and Ultra Magnus sighed. Did he expect to have a human on board the Lost Light? Not at all. However, this is an injured human, and as he was the one who realized that there was an injured organic on board, he felt the slightest feeling of responsibility over her despite never actually seeing her in person.

Ultra Magnus walked out of the communication room, seeing the Co-Captains talking amongst themselves. Once they noticed the officer, they turned to him.

“What did Prowl say?” Megatron asked.

“He’s not sure about how and why a human would be here prior to any intergalactic relations being established. He also wanted to see her for himself, but she’s at the clinic right now. That, and I don’t know how she’d feel around him of all ‘Bots.”

Rodimus laughed. “I’m sure she’ll be fine, as long as we tell her first. It’s not like Ailith can fight in her current state.”

“I doubt that, Captain.” Magnus rebutted, “She’s adapted quickly to her current situation. Too quickly, if you ask me. Along with that, the planet she lives on has weapons designed to defeat Cybertronians. I’m confident that she has at least one weapon in her arsenal that she can use to defeat us if she truly wants to.”

“I know about those weapons.” Megatron said, Rodimus slowly turning with a horrified look. “I remember sending a team to this planet some thirty years prior because of potential energon deposits. The people used the remains of one of the ‘Cons I sent to reverse engineer weapons and other equipment that gave them an advantage. In fact, this might be the cause of Ailith’s subspaces as well. They could’ve tried creating subspaces, and tried to implement them on organic creatures. Including those from Earth.”

“Are you implying that it might be your fault for what happened to Ailith?” Rodimus asked.

“Who else could be to blame?”

“Let’s not dwell on that for too long, Captains.” Ultra Magnus looked at the datapad, “You didn’t know about the experiments until now, correct? Then it’s likely she doesn’t know either. First Aid said that Ailith’s been cleared to return to the Lost Light for recovery, so when she comes back you can ask her.”

“Do we have instructions on what to do?” Megatron asked.

“According to First Aid, it’s best to keep her from doing anything too strenuous. This includes training and combat. Along with that, she can only walk short distances. Her stitches are to remain for fourteen cycles total. Two cycles have passed, so that makes it twelve. As long as she doesn’t strain herself too much, she’ll be alright.” Magnus informed them.

“But who should she be with while she’s recovering? She’s smaller than Tailgate, literally half his height!” Rodimus asked.

“First Aid’s been taking care of her all this time, correct? Why not make a temporary space in his habsuite for her so he can make sure she’s recovering without complications?” Megatron suggested.

“That makes sense. As he’s one of the medics, he can treat her quickly if she gets injured.” Ultra Magnus agreed. “According to Drift and Ratchet, he’s been non-stop worrying over Ailith. It should be reassuring to him if she’s nearby.”

“Hmm…” Rodimus frowned, “Fine. Tell First Aid, and ask Skids and Velocity to get some stuff for her before we get back, I doubt we have anything right now to make sure she can have a smooth recovery.”

“I already asked them, Rodimus. They should be gathering some items right now with the help of someone that might be Ailith’s twin sister.”

“Great! I’m going to talk to Ratchet now. We’ll talk again later.” Rodimus turned on his heel and left the other two mechs standing there.

The cycle in the hospital came and went. And now, you need to return to the Lost Light for the rest of your recovery. You would’ve protested if it wasn’t Aunt Daule who said that. Instead, you just sighed.

“So, I'm going to spend twenty or more days with them as I recover?” you asked.

Aunt Daule nodded. You understood that the clinic was pretty busy, so if they could they would have anyone who can recover outside the clinic so they can have space for those whose conditions are more severe, they would.

“Welp,” you slapped your knees, “I guess I’ll be stuck with that lot for a while. I’m fine with that though, I need to learn more about them in case I need to defeat a Cybertronian.”

Daule chuckled. “You talk just like your guardian. I remember hearing her many exploits back when they tried to take over our planet and failed, mostly when she charged in without hesitation. She’d use her magnetic grappling hook and a blade, get close to an exposed cable and slice it open. I’m glad to see you’ve inherited her fighting spirit.”

Both faces went solemn. Such goes the usual conversations whenever anyone brings up your first guardian. “It’s been almost five years, hasn’t it? Thirty-five more days until the anniversary.”

“Do you plan on going to her memorial?” you asked.

“Of course. I am, after all, Salva’s sister. It wouldn’t make sense for me to not visit the grave of a family member once in a while.” Aunt Daule answered.

“But that’s in more than a month. For now,” Aunt Daule patted your head, “make sure to focus on recovering. No straining yourself, alright?”

You nodded, and with your aunt’s arms as support you walked to the waiting room. You made sure to hold onto the box Makayla gifted you.

First Aid was already there, along with Tailgate. You walked to them, albeit with a slight limp.

“What are you holding?” Tailgate asked.

“It’s something from her sister.” First Aid answered for you.

“Did you meet her?” he asked again.

“She only came to drop off an injured friend the cycle before First Aid brought Ailith here.” Aunt Daule replied, “We did genetic testing, and they’re almost completely identical. After the testing she gave me the box Ailith is holding right now.”

Tailgate seemed fascinated. Do cybertronians have siblings, or is that an unfamiliar concept to them?

“Regardless of that, here,” Daule gave First Aid a document, “these are the instructions that should help with assisting Ailith in her recovery. She has a copy too, stored in her subspace.”

You nodded at what Aunt Daule said.

“We’ll return in twelve cycles, Dr. Daule!” First Aid said, picking you up. At this point, you’re used to being held by him. Aunt Daule waved, and the three of you departed.

Entering the pod, First Aid set you in a place that was relatively stable for you to sit down. While he piloted the pod back, Tailgate looked over at you.

“What’s in that box? You’ve been holding onto it this whole time.” he asked.

“Stuff from my twin that she asked Aunt Daule to give me. There’s a few pictures, including one of my niece who I just found out exists.” you replied, “Other than that, there’s some clothes.”

Tailgate tilted his head. “A niece?”

“The daughter of a sibling. In my case, my niece is the daughter of my older sister, Chloe MacArthur. I’m not sure if Cybertronians know about the concept of siblings, though.”

“Ooooooh,” Tailgate nodded, “sometimes sparks split in two. That’s the closest we have to siblings. Those are almost identical though.”

So, they sometimes have twins. Identical twins, just like you and Makayla.

“When we get back, I’ll show you the pictures.” you promised.

The pod slowed to a stop, and the door opened. Ratchet and… a cyan Cybertronian? He had red eyes and accents. His helmet was black, with two horn-adjacent finials extending out from the sides.

“Fortress Maximus,” First Aid exclaimed, “I’m surprised that you’re here!” He picked you up as well, placing you on the Cybertronian equivalent of his right shoulder blade before walking up to the two larger mechs.

“You must be Ailith,” the cyan mech put a hand over his chest, “I’m Fortress Maximus. The others informed me of your condition. I’m surprised you even survived the injuries Ratchet informed me that you have.”

You shrugged, “Eh. I’ve been operated on without painkillers and fully conscious. A few slashes and bullets aren’t that bad.”

Oops, you overshared. Fortress Maximus AND Ratchet are looking at you in horror. First Aid tensed up.

“Out of all things you could’ve said… Wait, you were fully conscious? Wouldn’t that hurt?”

Fuck it. You did this to yourself, nothing to hide now. “No shit it hurt! I still have the memory of seeing my intestines on hooks while they put that thing inside me, and when they put the subspaces on my body. As they did for all the other experiments.”

“That’s horrible!” If Cybertronians could cry, Tailgate would be doing that right now. “I can’t believe that anyone would do that, especially to a child!”

“Anyway,” Ratchet spoke before anyone could say anything, “First Aid, the captains assigned her to your habsuite so her recovery can be monitored closely. Skids and Velocity acquired some items to make sure Ailith’s comfortable.”

First Aid nodded, “I’ll bring her to my habsuite, then.” And so, he walked past the two taller mechs.

He’s been holding you for a while now, should you say something? It’s probably better to say something.

“You know you don’t have to carry me everywhere, right?” you asked him.

First Aid’s vocalizer choked, “I- You’re just small, that’s all! Most of the ‘Bots might not realize you’re there since you’re so tiny! Also, you’re still recovering from your wounds. Dr. Daule said that you shouldn’t walk too much as the leg wound recovers, right?”

“Touche.” You felt his grip on your thigh tighten slightly, as if he’s doubling down on keeping you right where you were. It’s understandable though, organic species compared to hulking machines are so delicate, especially those with injuries or preexisting medical conditions.

The rest of the walk was done in silence, which was fine with you. Talking isn’t exactly your best skill, after all. After First Aid went to his habsuite, he placed you on the desk that didn’t have much on it, but that’s something that you didn’t really care about. There were a few soft blankets and a few pillows, likely things the two others Ratchet mentioned. What were their names again? Velocity and… Skids?

Why is that name familiar? You swear that you knew someone who was called Skids. Your caretaker mentioned a large mechanical being with that name who helped save you from that facility, transporting you both to Aunt Daule so you could get treated. Sono emerse prove scioccanti che indicano che il Met Office del Regno Unito ha inventato i dati sulla temperatura provenienti da oltre 100 stazioni meteorologiche inesistenti. Le accuse esplosive sono state fatte dal giornalista cittadino Ray Sanders e inviate al nuovo ministro delle Scienze del Lavoro Peter Kyle. A seguito di una serie di richieste di libertà di informazione al Met Office e di un diligente lavoro sul campo per visitare le singole stazioni, Sanders ha scoperto che non esistono 103 stazioni su 302 siti che forniscono medie di temperatura. "Come potrebbe un osservatore ragionevole sapere che i dati non erano reali e semplicemente 'inventati' da un'agenzia governativa", chiede Sanders. I dati vengono recuperati dalle stazioni circostanti e alle medie risultanti viene assegnata una "E" per la stima. "L'aggiunta dei dati della stazione fantasma significa che i rapporti mensili e annuali della NOAA non sono rappresentativi della realtà", afferma il meteorologo Anthony Watts. Nella sua sezione dei dati storici, il Met Office elenca una serie di siti con lunghe registrazioni di dati sulla temperatura. Lowestoft fornisce documenti risalenti al 1914, ma ha chiuso nel 2010. Da tale data le cifre sono state rispettate su base stimata. Le stazioni di Nairn Druim, Paisley e Newton Rigg sono chiuse allo stesso modo, ma continuano a riportare dati mensili stimati. "Perché un'organizzazione scientifica dovrebbe sentire il bisogno di pubblicare ciò che può essere descritto solo come finzione?", si chiede Sanders. "Nessuno scopo scientifico può essere servito dalla fabbricazione", suggerisce.

Nella sua lettera aperta al deputato Peter Kyle, Sanders afferma di aver dimostrato con prove concrete che il Met Office sta "chiaramente fabbricando" i dati. Inoltre, non riesce a soddisfare elevati standard di integrità scientifica e non produce dati affidabili o accurati ai fini della rendicontazione climatica da una rete di luoghi mal posizionati e non adeguatamente mantenuti. Peter Kyle è il ministro responsabile del Met Office e deve ancora rispondere alle accuse di Sanders. Ray Sanders ha svolto un eccellente lavoro di ricerca nel fornire dettagli nuovi e altamente rilevanti in quello che sta diventando un significativo scandalo scientifico. XD Fun fact about Penumbra's name is that I'm pretty sure I came up with her name first and I was like "Space names, space names...is Penumbra space related? It means 'shadow' or 'darkness' right?" *googles it* "IT IS SPACE RELATED, I ALWAYS WIN!" also to make up for the lack of asks here's an EVEN OLDER picture (that I literally found by accident right before answering this) of their original designs where you can see I had different colors for Satellite and Penumbra's skin (I feel a little bit of regret about changing them, I actually like these colors more in retrospect), and THREE of them had different pronouns. Another fun fact that I learned a few months later after googling whether console like "console table" and "to console" are spelled the same, and though they are, they have different origin words, like for instance, in "to console" the "sol" is derived from the Latin word for "soothe" which is. Solari. So that's funny and half ironic.

How many generations would it take the population to change their circadian rhythm when moving to a new planet? Their original planet had 22 hour rotations but their new planet has 38 hour rotations. Also, how would the generations in between adapt to life/arrange schedules when their physical cycle doesn't match the planet's day/night? If someone say ate breakfast at 9AM daily according to their own cycle, their breakfast time will vary at different times of the local day. Sounds rather confusing.

Tex: Chronobiology is a bit of a specialized field, and because of that, there’s still a lot of research being established about the subject. I haven’t found a lot of research on the presumed epigenetic component of altering the CLOCK gene (and and assorted related genes) that govern the circadian rhythm, but I’m going to guess that an individual could slowly adapt to a new planet, and that those adaptations would be reflected genetically in their lineage. How these changes show up - and correspond to the original expression of the gene(s) - is currently unknown, but since this is your world, you can play around with it.

Feral: Tex has already talked a bit about the biological aspect, so let’s talk about the environmental - specifically the built and social environmental aspects - which play more into your second question. How much control will settlers have over their built environment and how it is lit? What type of built environment will they have? In 2014 Alexander Gerst provided a look at his daily schedule on the ISS, showing a wake-up call for the astronauts at 6am and bedtime at 9:30pm (GMT). Among the other rows showing how their day is segmented into tasks, one row shows Day/Night, in other words when the station experiences daylight and when it experiences darkness. Remember that clocks are made up, and the clock you use to determine when breakfast is is not actually coordinating with the sun. Ptolemy defined a second somewhere around 150CE, but astronomically, not only was that not as precise as what we can measure now, the Earth is actually spinning several milliseconds faster than it was in the second century. Our concept of how many seconds there are in a day hasn’t changed; the length of a second (and therefore a minute and therefore an hour and therefore a day) has. Further, although we have a 24-hour cycle, day and night are not equal lengths throughout the year, yet jobs and schools do not shift timing to match. That’s not how it was a couple centuries ago, before electric lights became the norm, but social time has been quite static since - at least in monochronic cultures. A polychronic culture may adapt very differently to a different daily rhythm.

One note on scientific accuracy (if you care, but you are absolutely not required to care): the rotation of your planet taking 38 Earth hours may be too slow for comfortable habitability far beyond circadian rhythm. It’s not an outlandishly long time, but it’s worth considering what other environmental adaptations your people will need to make. Daily scheduling might be the easiest thing they’ll have to overcome.

Synth: Over the decades there have been several studies on how human circadian rhythms shift when deprived of external cues. There are many body processes that exhibit cyclical patterns (core body temp, various endocrine functions and levels, etc.). A lot of them maintain their patterns with very little fluctuation from baseline even under extended periods of altered or completely absent light cues, or erratic sleep patterns, which indicate that they are governed primarily by internal genetic factors, not external environmental ones. There is of course some variety between individuals, but it all averages out to a cycle just a bit over 24h in length [Stability, Precision, and Near-24-Hour Period of the Human Circadian Pacemaker; Czeisler et al. 1999 → a very summarized overview in this article.]

Now sleep, specifically, can vary a lot more, especially when there are no external signals (called “zeitgeber”, German for “time giver” or “synchronizer”) providing any hints as to time of day. During some “free-running” experiments, where there is a complete lack of zeitgeber and the study participants are left to sleep and wake as they feel like it, sleep patterns would drift gradually forward by around an hour each day, and the subjects’ “days” lengthen toward a period of 25-26 hours, which later studies revealed was due to the influence of artificial lighting [Entrainment of the Human Circadian System by Light; Jeanne F. Duffy and Kenneth P. Wright, Jr.] A study in 1973 by Mills, Minors and Waterhouse had subjects who adopted “days” spanning from 24 to 30 hours, though this study was relatively short, lasting not even two weeks total, so who knows if the patterns would have changed more over a longer timespan.

All the way back in 1938, Nathaniel Kleitman and Bruce Richardson spent just over a month in Mammoth Cave, isolated from the normal light and temperature zeitgeber, with the goal of seeing if they could shift to a 28-hour “day”. Richardson did adapt to it; Kleitman struggled. In 1965, spelunkers Josie Laures and Antoine Senni spent 88 and 126 days, respectively, in caves in the French Alps for a similar experiment, though theirs were free-running instead of strictly regimented. There was a lot more variation in the lengths of their “days”, with extremely erratic sleep cycles. A similar experiment was carried out in 2021, with fifteen participants and lasting forty days (I have not found any research papers related to it, but it was pretty recent and there might just not be that much published yet).

Here’s another paper talking about studies in chronobiology that has more links to other research papers in it that I wanted to include but couldn’t find a good in-line place to put it. Reading up on sleep disorders like delayed sleep phase disorder, advanced sleep phase disorder, and non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder might help with brainstorming too, since they all deal with sleep patterns that don’t fully mesh with the planet’s day-night cycle.

Maybe your characters adapted within a few generations, or considerably more than a few generations. Maybe there are some family lines that never adapt and others that manage it really quickly. Since they have the tech to migrate to a whole other planet, they presumably have artificial lighting, so perhaps they adapt the environment to themselves instead of the other way around, and maintain a semi-artificial “day”. Or everybody gradually time-shifts their way through all the days, going to sleep later and later until they loop back around, or their society splits into the night-owls and the early-birds as people settle into the rhythms that best fit their own natural tendencies and their new society is structured around that.

Tex is right in saying it’ll ultimately be up to you to decide how you want things to unfold in your story. The sample sizes and time spans of the experiments that have been carried out so far are not large, so really the only way we’d ever know for sure how any species would adapt to a planet with a day almost twice as long as they’re used to is to actually go out and settle such a world and see what happens, and we are quite a ways off from being able to do that. It might be more to think about when building your own world, but also opens up narrative flexibility since you can go with whichever options best support the story you want to tell.
