in the dripping dipping bushes, workmen

with orange fluorescent waistcoats

burn brambles

  . 

on the embankments entwined with weeds,

wood cable drums, level crossing

isolation telephone oil barrels slagheaps

(and the boxgirder bridge's blackened brickwork)

  .

past station signs shooting past benched platforms

strewn litter scattered in grassgrown cuttings

shunting goodswagons in sidings

signalboxes fishplates wireducts yellow speed

signs racing by

 .

and high tension wires laced overhead

gravelpiles on the grass, willowherb, gorse

derelict warehouses with windows broken;

eclipses of tunnels (flying through black night)

 .

a pedestrian walking his dog on a woodfenced cinderpath

(by plantpotted suburban garden greenhouses

and aqueduct arches with graffiti-sprayed parapets)

and

the pylons throwing slow strides over the hillside

 .

like lost gods

come to rest
