i was in an elevator alone yesterday (actually it was the elevator in our big iconic oldest building on campus which is cool but irrelevant) and when it took off I immediately started thinking what do I do if it gets stuck, I wonder if I can get out the top. then I'll be in the elevator shaft what do I do then. and then I realized I am not nancy drew but for one hot second there I kind of truly fully believed I was

You're referring to this post, right? If so, YES, it's part of the Attolia/The Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner (♥♥♥♥) which begins with The Thief. Specifically, the quoted bit was from the third book (my personal favourite), The King of Attolia.
