We developed a large client base that included security companies such as bay alarm co. , ADT security services, and Honeywell among many others. At the end of the '90s, Moore's electronics moved to the Peterborough area where we are still located. We expanded our services to include repairing most brands of robotic PTZ dome cameras with American dynamics/Sensormatic and Pelco being the top models we repair. Cctv systems are one of the most critical components of a residential or commercial security system. While it’s always important to ensure that you install the right system for your particular needs, it is equally important to ensure that the system is well maintained and functioning at optimum levels. Arranging regular CCTV maintenance is just one of the ways in which you can ensure your system is functioning properly when you need it the most. By investing in an on-going maintenance program for your CCTV cameras, you can protect yourself from any unforeseen technical lapses or future repairs that may be required. If you are serious about getting the most out of your system, regular maintenance is an absolute necessity.
You assume after installation, that all the work on the surveillance system has been completed –all the specifications have been followed, but there should be few things you need to consider seriously – the maintenance. What exactly is maintenance? it involves keeping the workplace, infrastructure, equipment and other things in efficient working condition. It may include scheduled inspection and repairs so that it can make sure everything is working fine. Why maintenance is so important to an organization?  the lack of it may lead to any potentially dangerous situations. It’s the thing that most of the organizations fail to notice. Having a successful installation does not finish your job, but to make the system trouble-free, producing the expected results as always is critical as far as an organization is considered. If you are so meticulous about flawless and total monitoring always, then it would be good to consider complete care for your CCTV security systems. The CCTV maintenance is just like any other maintenance to the electrical or its infrastructure or other services in a company.
What is the best way to maintain a CCTV system?
Cctv technicians spend the majority of their time installing and maintaining CCTV systems. Additional duties include monitoring equipment, preparing purchasing requests for materials needed for each project and writing daily and monthly reports regarding maintenance work provided. They must often communicate with customers to explain problems and procedures with the equipment.
We are full service and installation contractors. We specialize in security camera installation, IP megapixel CCTV installation a/v, home theatre installation and structured wiring. Ohio telecom has extensive experience in both designing and installing low voltage systems. Our speciality is quality - both in design and workmanship. We use only the highest quality materials, protecting your investment and ensuring your hardware will last for years to come. We service residential and commercial customers in Peterborough. We will visit at your job site and advise you based on your budget and requirements, what is the best solution and gear necessary to achieve your goals. After the installation, we will give you the necessary training so you can be familiar with the system. Afterwards, we will provide warranty and service to maintain the system. Some of our success and reputation belong to the brands we use, here are some of them: no, ge security, Samsung security, exact vision, and tech, dedicated micros, Pelco, Arecont vision, axis, ever focus, Vivitek, speco technologies, acti, Honeywell, Yamaha, Onkyo, pioneer, sony, jamo, bose, Boston acoustics and many more. Cctv.
Many years ago, I worked for a company that designed, installed and maintained CCTV systems for the retail trade. During my time there I discovered just how far certain individuals will go so they can steal! I also discovered that it’s not just customers you need to keep an eye on; employees are not always as honest as they should be as well.
We believe in wired CCTV systems because we want to give our clients maximum reliability. This is less likely with wireless systems as cameras can easily disconnect from the wi-fi network. A wireless system is also more difficult to maintain as you either need to replace batteries continuously or ensure there’s a working power outlet for each camera.
Cctv camera world is proud to announce that we now carry the highest resolution IP cameras available in the security camera industry. Our line of ultra HD (aka UHD) 4k DVR recorders and IP cameras support up to 4k resolution real-time live viewing and recording, and camera sensor resolutions of 8 megapixels and 12 megapixels. 4k camera systems are perfect for large area coverage and identifying objects at a distance even in recorded video. You can capture video with wide-angle overviews with multiple focus points while maintaining the ability to digitally zoom in and focus on the fine details.
Our 24/7 proactive CCTV maintenance service is scalable to monitor an unlimited number of sites, so whether you have a handful or thousands of sites, your CCTV systems can be checked and maintained proactively.
Installing and maintaining the latest technologies in security solutions, that meet your requirements, including door entry access, automatic doors and barriers, fire and intruder alarms and CCTV systems is what we do best. We will work with you to assess your requirements and recommend, install and maintain security solutions that are relevant, timely, competitively priced and of uncompromising quality. If you have an emergency, we will send out an engineer as quickly as possible. Our engineers are usually able to tackle almost any situation and customer need, diagnosing and solving even the most complicated equipment and system problems; including those installed by other companies. All our engineers have a minimum of 4 years’ experience and between us we have over 30 years of experience in the security business.
Security cameras & CCTV / surveillance systems
Many shopping centres already have video surveillance cameras that are commonly used to track the security of their business operations. Monitoring each CCTV feed manually isn’t practical for security and surveillance. Monitoring multiple CCTV feeds at the same time is both inefficient and ineffective, as well as labour-intensive. Because of these shortcomings, CCTV is reduced to a mere tool for post-violation analysis.
Deciding whether or not to install your own surveillance cameras depends on the type of cameras and your personal comfort level. If the information in this article or the manufacturers’ instructions make your head spin, there’s no need to tackle it alone. Security cameras that you’ll be monitoring yourself (as opposed to professionally monitored security systems) usually have the simplest installation. Many of these cameras communicate via wi-fi and only need hard wiring to their power source. Smaller cameras like video doorbells and peephole cameras frequently use batteries, which is even more user-friendly. Outdoor security cameras can present more of a challenge, especially if the home’s exterior has limited power sources, if you don’t have many tools or if you are concerned about affecting your home’s appearance. In these cases, you may want to hire a professional with experience on prior camera installs.
installing CCTV cameras with 7 simple steps you’ve finally purchased a security camera system and now it’s time for installation. If you’re a bit overwhelmed, we’ve got you covered. This simple how to install a security camera guide is going to simplify the process. In the past, the complexity of home security systems often required professional installation and setup. With the growth of DIY home security, homeowners, renters, and small business owners can easily add a security system. Installation requirements vary by system complexity, from the stand-alone plug and play wire-free security cameras, to complex multi-camera security systems.
We can carry out a survey of your property to help you choose the right CCTV system. With our range of CCTV products, you can monitor and secure your home and business premises easily. Our CCTV systems come with static or fully functional cameras that provide the best possible picture. We can customise and tailor our CCTV systems to meet your specific security needs.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV), also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point-to-point (p2p), point-to-multipoint (p2mp), or mesh wired or wireless links. Though almost all video cameras fit this definition, the term is most often applied to those used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, stores, and other areas where security is needed. Though videotelephony is seldom called "CCTV" one exception is the use of video in distance education, where it is an important tool.
There are several types of security controls that can be implemented to protect hardware, software, networks, and data from actions and events that could cause loss or damage. For example, physical security controls include such things as data centre perimeter fencing, locks, guards, access control cards, biometric access control systems, surveillance cameras, and intrusion detection sensors. Digital security controls include such things as usernames and passwords, two-factor authentication, antivirus software, and firewalls.

Why Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+ won’t work on old Roku devices
CLOSE
Tumblr media
Buzz 60’s Lenneia Batiste gives 4 tips that will elevate your Netflix movie nights to a whole new level! Buzz60
If you have an old Roku device plugged into your TV, you probably won’t be able to watch Netflix on it anymore.
The company, which specializes in making cheap streaming devices to watch streaming networks like Netflix, Hulu and CBS All Access, has announced that “technical difficulties,” will prevent the old units from working with Netflix as of Dec. 1.
Translated, that means the fourth quarter and holiday season are upon us, and it’s time for you to buy some new products and keep the cash registers ringing. Or, new devices have better technology, and it’s time to get with the program.
Tumblr media

Roku Express, 2019 edition (Photo: Roku)
This isn’t dissimilar to Apple’s approach with iPhones. Even if the consumer expectation is for them to last forever, the truth is, the time frame is just six years. Apple each year discontinues support for the latest new iOS to older phones. Last year, it was the 5S, and this year it’s the iPhone 6, which was first released in 2014.
Microsoft is discontinuing support for the Windows 7 operating system in January for software first released in 2009. Like Apple, Microsoft says it needs to move people to newer software for better security, and “so that we can focus our investment on supporting newer technologies and great new experiences.”
Windows 10 starts at $139, while iOS is free.
Roku devices are not, but they’re dirt cheap.
New models start as low as $29.99. The Express plays back in HD only, the Premiere ($39.99) also plays in 4K and HDR, and Stick ($59.99) has greater Wi-Fi range.
The 2019 models are way smaller than they were back when the $99 originals were released but can’t connect to old TVs that require more than an HDMI input. Roku says the new units have way more power, load content faster and have a prettier user interface.

Speaking of Roku, this has been a big week for streaming.
Netflix, the company whose videos won’t play on old Roku devices, said that some 64 million people watched the hit “Stranger Things“ in July. That’s not a typo, it’s 64 million people. On a streaming network.
The highest-rated TV broadcast ever was a Super Bowl game from 2015, with 115 million viewers. “NCIS,” TV’s top-rated network TV show, averages around 12.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen.
Apple, which is set to launch its answer to Netflix, Apple TV+, on Nov. 1, put streaming front and center this week, with a huge premiere party, it’s first-ever, for one of the eight TV+ series set to debut on Nov. 1, the space race set drama “For All Mankind.”
Apple went all Hollywood on this one, renting the Village Theater in Westwood, seen in Quentin Tarantino’s recent “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” when the actress Sharon Tate goes to watch herself in a Dean Martin movie.
The maker of iPhones and Mac computers handed out mini champagne bottles and glasses for guests to bring to their seats and handed them swag bag afterward with freeze-dried ice cream, USA TODAY’s Carly Mallenbaum reports.
Apple had a “cocktail attire” dress code for the party, highly unusual for a Hollywood premiere. “It was different,” she says of the party, thrown by the firm known for its “Think Different” ad campaign back in the 1990s.
And finally, speaking of Apple, no, Apple TV+ will not play on the old Roku devices either. You’ll have to upgrade.
Perhaps get a new phone with that, too?

In other tech news this week.
Google’s Pixel 4: The company unveiled a slew of new products this week, including the Pixel 4, a new edition of the Mini connected speaker (now called the Nest Mini) that has a wall mount, and updated Google Wifi mesh router, with a lower price and a built-in Mini. If you’re having a hard time keeping up with Google’s name changes, yes, it’s the Nest Mini, but the flagship product is still called Google Home. This week Google also discontinued its Daydream virtual reality viewer.
Zuck says he doesn’t want to be the tech police. The Facebook co-founder said it’s not the role of tech firms to decide what is truth and what is fiction: “I don’t think people want to live in a world where you can only say things that tech companies decide are 100 percent true.” And speaking of the social network, the company released version 2.0 of its poor-selling Portal, the video chat device that puts a Facebook microphone and video camera into your home. The new edition is $20 cheaper and can show video or photos in horizontal or vertical modes.
Netflix isn’t worried about the competition. In announcing its earnings, Netflix said the coming “Streaming Wars,” with Disney and Apple will be “noisy” but it’s not concerned, saying it doesn’t believe it will lose many subscribers with the new entrants. What do you think readers? Will you give up Netflix for Disney+, or just have both?

Want to Support Local Music? Here’s Some Actually Cool Merch You’ll Want to Buy
GARRETT GRAVLEY | APRIL 13, 2020 | 4:00AM

In the ancient period of two months ago, there was a tacit social contract between artists/businesses and fans/customers wherein the latter bought branded merchandise from the former to help keep them afloat.
This ran like clockwork — artists bought Gildan T-shirts in bulk, printed some cool design on them and flipped them for a 150% margin. When they really wanted to be creative, they would help consumers keep their closets empty and sell something like coffee mugs or socks. In doing all this, patrons were able to support the artistic community while also having some morsel of self-validation in looking fresh.
But quarantine has since disrupted this arrangement. Consumers have less money to spend on merch, which is, in turn, only being advertised to family, roommates and pets.
Suffice to say, the coronavirus has taken the wind out of merch sales, and there has never been a more dire need for them. Whether you’re looking to get a new T-shirt, an LP or even some shorts, below is a list of some cool merch to support the North Texas music scene.
This Three Links T-shirt with someone’s negative Facebook review.
Support your local venues, especially the ones that, as a Facebook reviewer named Zach once put it, book shitty punk bands and make you wait in line for the bathroom.
This Asian Doll T-shirt.
Technically, her stage name is currently Asian Da Brat, but so many people refer to her by her old stage name “Asian Doll” that both are used interchangeably. Case in point, this “Young Rich Doll” white tee is still a featured product on her official merch page.
This sold-out LP of Lift to Experience’s The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads.
Vinyl pressings of Lift to Experience’s 2001 magnum opus The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads are difficult to come by, which only makes copies of this album more coveted and expensive. But hey, that’s what happens when your band gets a cult following.
This Good Records T-shirt.
Good Records is a Texas institution, and there’s no better way to express pride of this fact than by wearing a T-shirt of a Good Records logo printed over a Texas flag.
These Liv.e shawty shawts.
Los Angeles-via-Dallas rapper Liv.e (pronounced “lihv”) has been on the rise after touring with Earl Sweatshirt and receiving cosigns from the likes of Erykah Badu and Tyler, the Creator. She’s not going to ascend to the top, however, without also putting herself at the cutting edge of the merch game. In a merch industry too focused on torsos, the Dolfin Records signee is filling the void in selling “shawty shawts” on her Bandcamp page.
This sold-out bundle of Stick Men With Ray Guns LPs.
Stick Men With Ray Guns was one of Dallas’ earliest punk bands. A regular at the legendary Hot Klub, they shared bills with then-up-and-comers such as Bad Brains, Misfits, Dead Kennedys and U.K. Subs, and had a notorious camaraderie with Butthole Surfers. Paying $27 for both pressings of Stick Men’s entire discography is a great deal, which is why the bundle is sold out. If you don’t mind shelling out an additional $4, however, you can get both Property of Jesus Christ and 1000 Lives to Die separately for an aggregated price of $31.
WE BELIEVE LOCAL JOURNALISM IS CRITICAL TO THE LIFE OF A CITY
Engaging with our readers is essential to the Observer’s mission. Make a financial contribution or sign up for a newsletter, and help us keep telling Dallas’s stories with no paywalls.
SUPPORT OUR JOURNALISM
This Texas Theatre “11-22-63” T-shirt.
We’re perhaps best known as the city that killed JFK, but with enough people wearing this shirt, we can also be known as the city that arrested Lee Harvey Oswald as he hid in a movie theater.
This T-shirt of Erykah Badu wearing a T-shirt that says “Pimp the System.”
To “pimp the system” is to take advantage of a system that has kept you down. Coming from someone as self-empowered as Ms. Badu, that’s totally on brand.
This T-shirt of Townes Van Zandt with his dog Geraldine.
It’s hard to pin down Geraldine’s origins, but her owner, country legend Townes Van Zandt, was an even rarer breed. Music heavyweights such as Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Neil Young, Garth Brooks and the late John Prine have cited Van Zandt as an influence, but even with such ubiquity has he remained a best-kept secret of sorts. Above all else, though, he was a complete badass, and Geraldine was lucky for having such solid hangs with him.
Pinkish Black coffee mug.
“World’s Best Dad” is such a cliché thing to put on a coffee mug. Not only that, but there’s seldom any basis of truth behind it. I mean, have you ever been to a dad contest? And forget those normie mugs that say things like, “Don’t talk to me until I’ve had my morning coffee.” Your 12-year-old son takes Ritalin to treat his ADHD, Rebecca, so you’re not the one who’s become dependent on stimulants. If you truly want to stand out among your co-workers and drink your morning coffee in style, snag this Pinkish Black coffee mug.

Milwaukee is the place to go for those who would like to see some of the USA from the yesteryears, while still being in a city as modern as any other in the United States.
Here, one can still taste the 50s, with the baseball, Harleys, the arts and, of course, the beer – this city is called Brew City for a good reason. There are many exciting places to visit in Milwaukee, so read on to discover the 12 best things to do in the city.
1. Miller Park
Grab some hot dogs and cheer for some classic American baseball action. In fact, you can enjoy a barbecue, too (just bring a grill and a truck)! Housing the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team since 2001, this stadium can also act as an indoor venue, thanks to the retractable roof. This is especially useful considering the city is cold during baseball season.
Transport to and from the stadium is fairly easy, and accessible – plenty of parking for cars is provided. Outside Miller Park is a smaller field, which was where an old stadium once stood. Also in the parking area is a plaque marking the place of the final home run of baseball legend, Henry Aaron. The main draw here is, of course, the Brewers’ games.
2. Havenwoods State Forest
Located just north of the downtown area, this green space is a good combination of forests, creeks, ponds, and open grasslands – good for those seeking some relaxation from the city life. Trails run throughout the park and the Environment Awareness Center, in the middle of the forest, has staff that can guide you to learn more about the various flora and fauna found in the park.
This center usually caters to schoolchildren on field trips but can easily accommodate anyone. A baseball diamond is located just outside the park and the forest has plenty of activities and events, most open to all.
3. Milwaukee County Zoo
This zoo is large and contains many species of animals found outside the United States. More than 3000 animals reside here, grouped into a variety of exhibits, including an Australian section, a flamingo exhibit, and a primate exhibit. Some animals can even be fed at selected times, during the day.
There are plenty of shows to watch here, too - from theatre to bird shows to sea lions. Rides are also available, including zip lines and a train that goes around the zoo. Transport to and from the zoo is easy, and parking is plentiful. Admission is cheaper during the late fall and winter, but the spring and summer months would be the best time to make a visit.
4. Bay Beach Amusement Park
Located north of downtown Milwaukee, this amusement park really brings out the child in everybody, and more surprisingly for a relatively cheap price. There are many rides to enjoy, like a train, the Falling Star, the Sea Dragon, bumper cars, a waterslide, and others.
The main attraction, however, is the Zippin Pippin, which is one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the country. For those not inclined to ride, there are plenty of shops and places to simply hang around while the younger ones enjoy.
5. Milwaukee Art Museum
One will marvel at the sight of the Quadracci Pavilion, with its massive Burke Brise Soleil, opening and closing with the wind, reminiscent of a sail. It’s fitting, considering the Museum’s location downtown, beside the bay. Housing over 30,000 works in 40 galleries, the Milwaukee Art Museum is one of the largest art galleries in the United States. This is boosted by the fact that there are over 400,000 visitors to the gallery, annually.
The place itself is comprised of three pavilions and a landscaped garden in front of the Quadracci Pavilion. Many kinds of art are present in the museum’s collection, from American to modern art.
6. Discovery World
Located immediately south of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Discovery World is a science center that gets around 300 thousand visitors annually, mainly families and students and it’s a wonderful complement to a tour of the Art Museum. Many exhibits are present here: the Reiman Aquarium features different aquatic systems from the Great Lakes to the Caribbean, a Les Paul interactive exhibit, Great Lakes exhibit, and a dream machine, where robots can be tasked to do things.
There are also labs where people can be involved: biology, video and audio, printing, and others. This is a place that makes science fun for children of all ages.
7. American Science & Surplus
American Science & Surplus sells a wide variety of items not found in most mainstream stores. Many of the items are tilted toward the sciences and arts. High-selling items include lights, electronic components, and art tools. Some of the more complex items include microscopes, telescopes, power tools, and even car parts.
Surplus items, factory overruns, and closeout items are also sold here. Discounts and bargains can be found – one just needs to keep an eye out. The store in Milwaukee is open every day, from 10 am to around 7 pm
8. Lakefront Brewery
At the Lakefront Brewery, one can enjoy beer and learn how it came to be. This brewery offers 45-minute tours around their brewery, showing how they produce their beer. A maximum of 60 people can be accommodated per tour, so booking early ensures a spot. Weekends are a good time, as the whole brewery is not in operation and open to tours.
A more advanced Technical Tour of 90-minutes will bring visitors up close with experts and brewing equipment. Note that Technical Tours are only conducted on Sundays, and visitors must be at least 21 years old.
9. Pabst Museum
One can relive America’s Gilded Age in this mansion. This was once the home of the late Captain Frederick Pabst, founder of the Pabst Brewing Company, which is still in operation today. Inside, one can see how elaborate the fittings are – from the beds to the chairs. The collection consists mainly of art and furniture that belonged to the family, but many donations from friends have brought it to over 5000 pieces.
There is also an archives section, housing papers that pertain to the Pabst family, some paraphernalia, and the records of the brewery. An appointment is needed to secure a tour of the archives. It is also important to note that restoration of some parts of the mansion is still ongoing
10. Harley-Davidson Museum
When it comes to motorcycles, nothing is more popular than a Harley-Davidson. Celebrating over a century of existence, the Harley-Davidson Museum displays almost 500 motorcycles and a plethora of motorcycle pieces across its lifetime. The earliest known Harley-Davidson is also housed here.
There is also a history tour of the company, from its birth to what it is today. There are experience centers, where you can sit in some motorcycles while watching videos – good for those who like their picture taken. If you get hungry, there are food stalls and souvenir shops here. Saturday afternoons are a good time to go, with some blues music and an all you can eat barbecue, in the evening.

On March 22, Zurich’s Arena Cinemas will become the first European theatre — and one of just a handful in the world — with a direct-view LED screen.
It’s an ironic milestone: LED technology enables the big yet affordable TVs that have cut into theatre admissions, which declined 6% over the course of 2017, according to the National Association of Theater Owners. But now LED technology could give exhibitors another tool for making and saving money.
Arena uses Samsung Electronics’ Cinema LED Screen, which is nearly 10.3 meters wide, supports 4K and has a peak brightness level of 146 foot-lamberts (fL). The world’s first Cinema LED installation was in July 2017 at Lotte Cinema World Tower in Seoul. Sony is among the other vendors developing direct-view LED displays for cinema applications.
“It is possible that our future complexes will be Cinema LED-only installations,” says Edi Stöckli, Arena Cinemas’ owner. “We will test our installation and see what other benefits we get. For the moment the price is very high, as all new technologies are at the beginning.”
“It is possible that our future complexes will be Cinema LED-only installations.”
Deploying a direct-view LED display is a lot different than replacing one projection technology with another projection technology.
For starters, LED doesn’t require a projection booth. That space could be used to generate additional revenue, such as premium seating.
Arena Cinemas converted its booth into a private lounge.
“Cinema LED is the future of the cinemas,” Stöckli says. “The digital projector was a step, but it is still a projector with all its technical limits. This technology needs much less power, less cooling and lives much longer than a projector.”
5 tons and 10 times the cost
Depending on the theatre, an LED screen might incur higher installation costs compared to projection.
“The LED screens weigh 5 tons, so you have to build a cinema a hell of a lot stronger,” says David Hancock, IHS Markit director of research and analysis for cinema and home entertainment.
“The cost of a direct-view LED screen is estimated to be up to 10 times the cost of a typical perforated screen,” says Mark Mayfield, QSC director of global cinema marketing. “But there is no projector, so that could be a wash.”
LED is a new technology not only for exhibitors, but also for the specialised integrators serving the cinema vertical? So it’s possible that LED could create an opportunity for traditional AV firms to expand into cinema.
“It’s far more common in the commercial AV world in applications like outdoor digital signage,” Mayfield says.  “On the other hand, commercial AV integrators generally have little experience in the nuances of the cinema industry. So there is likely to be some cross pollination, potentially leading to another type of technology convergence.”
LED also could enable cinemas in new locations or breathe life into struggling ones.
“Direct-view screens can create a much brighter image with significantly higher contrast ratios,” Mayfield says. “They could potentially revitalise drive-in or outdoor cinema, and even make it possible to show movies in daylight or indoors in full lighting.”
Like laser projection, LED displays also could spur more 3D ticket sales by alleviating the brightness problem that meant an underwhelming experience with older technologies. But audio has to be addressed to avoid becoming the new weak link for both 3D and 2D.
“A solid direct-view screen removes the option of placing sound sources where they create the most realistic image-to-picture localisation: placing speakers behind the screen is no longer feasible,” Mayfield says. “So we have to develop new methods and potentially, new technologies to create that sense of accurate localisation.”
“A solid direct-view screen removes the option of placing sound sources where they create the most realistic image-to-picture localization: placing speakers behind the screen is no longer feasible.”
All of these factors have some industry watchers speculating that LED will fundamentally change the types of technologies, companies and venue designs in the cinema space. “LED has the potential to be a genuine disruptor of the business,” Hancock says.
Out with the old? Not so fast Direct-view displays come on the heels of two other formats and technologies generating buzz: high frame rate (HFR) and 4K.
“HFR has not appeared to go over well with general audiences,” says Dan Cofer, Alamo Drafthouse Cinema technical director.  “I doubt we will see a huge push for that in the future. Also, there are not many releases in 4K, and it’s unclear if there is demand for it beyond the cinephile audience. We are currently looking at laser projection and direct display (such as the Sony C-LED) though mainly for premium large-format (PLF) screens at this point, as it is cost-prohibitive to retrofit existing installations.”
Meanwhile, some older formats are holding their ground.
“There has been a resurgence of interest in older formats such as 35 mm and 70 mm, and we are actively installing equipment for those formats in our theatres,” says Kimberly Sandel, manager for private and community events for Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Austin, Texas, market.  “Seventy millimetre was once thought to be a dying art, but now more and more blockbuster titles are being released with 70 mm prints.” Virtual reality (VR) is another question mark. So far, it’s been a niche play.
“You’re not getting VR in the cinema auditorium,” Hancock says. “It’s more of a side thing: maybe a VR pod with 10 units in the foyer. It’s designed to complement the cinema experience, [such as] with games, trailers and stuff like that. It’s not challenging the cinema.”
For instance, VR game systems in the lobby could promote films in the hope of getting players to buy a ticket.
“This can be a good tool to keep visitors in the lobby longer and generate more concessions sales,” says Till Cussmann, CinemaNext vice president.
Like many exhibitors, Alamo Drafthouse is waiting to see if and how filmmakers embrace VR.
“We have done lobby installs for VR demos during our film festival Fantastic Fest,” Sandell says. “VR is definitely growing as a medium for filmmakers, so I expect we will see more demand for it in the future.”
But other exhibitors question whether VR will ever have a place in the auditorium.
“VR is a technology for individual use,” Stöckli says. “We sell collectivity in our theatres: the togetherness of movie-goers, sharing the same emotion at the same time.” Multi-player gaming is a form of togetherness.
“Gaming is indeed a growing market for cinemas,” Cussmann says. “Organising gaming sessions or tournaments in a cinema auditorium is technically easy to do, but it needs quite a lot of marketing and organisational skills and resources that not all exhibitors have in-house. This is why third-party event agencies are getting quite often involved in those sessions.”
Meetings at the movies For years, some exhibitors rented out their auditoriums for non-film events, such as all-hands business meetings. Flat or declining ticket sales have increased interest in rentals.
“The LED screens weigh 5 tons, so you have to build a cinema a hell of a lot stronger.”
“It’s clearly a growing market,” Cussmann says. “With digital projection  and  sound  equipment, you can easily show any kind of content, from live events to recorded content: opera, ballet, sports, expos, red carpet, teleseries, etc.”
The opportunity varies based on several factors, starting with the theatre’s location. “There are relatively few that can do it: city-centre cinemas [in] big cities, business centres,” Hancock says.
Exhibitors also are competing with specialised theatres such as those in museums and other cultural attractions.  Those “institutional theatres,” as they’re sometimes called, have cachet that helps attract event organisers and attendees.
“There’s no cachet with going to an event at the mall [multiplex],” says Derek Threinen, vice president of film distribution and business development at Giant Screen Films / D3D Cinema, which specialises in the institutional market.
Sales staff is another competitive factor.
“The institutional theatres are the ones that perfected that game 20 years ago,” Threinen says. “They have a distinct advantage over the multiplex theatres with regard to having dedicated sales staff. They’re already selling these venues.”
But as the cinema rental market matured, businesses have launched to help exhibitors go after non-film opportunities.
“Companies like Fathom Events have a huge offer for alternative content and help also to market it to the right audience,” Cussmann says. “The main challenge today is to connect the right audience to the right content without having the exhibitor bearing too much risk that the auditoriums are empty and that he loses revenue compared to regular movie screenings.
So the evolution from classical cinemas towards visual entertainment centre has started and will continue to change the landscape.
“Gaming sessions, business conferences and other events are part of this change, and every decent cinema chain has today a corporate sales or event department that markets those new activities. This is not a temporary trend but will be part of the future business of a movie theatre.”
Event organisers also look at whether a theatre can support a variety of AV inputs, such as wireless mics, laptops and Skype feeds.
“The majority of current digital projector setups these days come equipped to handle most outputs,” Sandel says. “We just know when building venues to include front-of-house connections. Having state-of-the-art projection and sound equipment is really the most important part when marketing a venue even for non-film events.
“We are currently looking at laser projection and direct display though mainly for premium large-format screens at this point, as it is cost-prohibitive to retrofit existing installations.”
“Another nice addition we like to include, but cannot always accommodate, is power outlets near the seats. This is incredibly useful for day-long conferences where attendees may need to charge various devices.” Direct-view LED displays also could help cinemas go after the non-film market.
“With this new technology, auditoriums can be screening content with full ambient light on without any compromise on quality,” Cussmann says.
Shaking up the market For years many institutional theatres have offered 4D technologies, such as seats that move and bursts of scents. Now cinemas are increasingly adding 4D to spur ticket sales.
“We’re trying to get people back into the habit of going to the theatres again,” says CEO Byung-Hwan Choi, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX, whose 4DX systems are in over 400 theatres in 50 countries. “We see enhanced cinema experiences as the first big step in achieving that: to create an atmosphere that can only be available in theatres. Not to just sit back and watch a movie, but to really experience it, to be immersed in it.”
For example, CJ 4DPLEX’s ScreenX platform gives audiences a 270 degree view.
“Think about seeing a film like ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ where you can experience scenes as if you’re surrounded by the waves and the sea,” Choi says. “It’s really something to experience, and there’s nothing like this out there on the market. We like to try and keep ahead of the curve.”
One way is by adapting technologies from other verticals, such as theme parks. If that strategy is successful, it’s another potential way for AV firms in those verticals to expand into the cinema market.
“We have developed our own 4DX VR technology that’s currently featured in theme parks and arcades around the world,” Choi says.
“The VR world is an interesting, growing industry which with we want to keep up. We’re always on the lookout for interesting collaboration projects, specifically in the gaming and alternative content field.”

Want to Support Local Music? Here’s Some Actually Cool Merch You’ll Want to Buy
