JANUARY 2021 GOLD STAR MEDIA SCHEDULES & REVIEW

Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of February 7 KST:

A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).

A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.

Threads do not have to take place directly during an important date listed on the schedule, but must be related to what the muse is mentioned to be doing in the paragraph explaining their schedule/the company’s schedule for the month and/or their thoughts on the mentioned activities or lack thereof.

These schedules may be updated throughout the month if new information needs to be added.

Reminder: December schedule posts are due by the end of January 7 KST. Please do not post schedule posts in the fmdschedule tag.

OVERALL COMPANY

The company holds their annual meeting near the end of the month to go over goals and plans for the new year and congratulate their artists (and other staff) on a job well-done in the previous year. Also typical, they’ll do their annual health check for the purposes of media-playing caring about their artists’ health. 2020 was a good year for the company’s profits and public relevance, even if things began to get messy behind the scenes. The meeting doesn’t show any sign of acknowledgement about the any behind-the-scenes planning problems, instead focusing on boasting achievements by their artists in Korea as well as other large foreign markets with the aim of “raising morale”.

Important dates:

January 26: Meeting for company artists and those who work directly with them (managers, PR, etc.) headed by CEO Bang Sunyoung. Gold Star Media’s goal statements and overall plans for 2020 will be delivered.

Various dates (up to individual muse): As per usual January Gold Star custom, all group members and soloists will be asked to individually schedule beginning of the year medical check-up appointments on Gold Star’s dollar if they have not had one in the past six months. This will be slightly media-played as it is every year by the company as the company having a clean bill of health regardless of the results, although any medical concerns will be privately addressed.

GOLD STAR SOLOIST 1

"Eight” is the hit everyone expects it to be and is a good omen as the release that ushers in the new year for Gold Star. Promotions are kept simple, as they usually are for her since she doesn’t need much push to succeed with the public, and she’ll film an acoustic performance video of “Eight” as a gift to her fans. She’ll be revisiting some old songs in the practice rooms behind the scenes as well to prepare for an upcoming mini-concert of her own on Yoo Heeyeol’s Sketchbook.

Important dates:

January 4: “Eight” Acoustic Ver. video filming (to be released: January 10).

January 9: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day One at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: BC Soloist 1, BEE, Dimensions Soloist 3, Lucid).

January 11: KBS Cool FM Volume Up radio show guesting.

January 30: End of music show promotions.

GOLD STAR SOLOIST 2

After the end of music show promotions, she’ll fly out to L.A. to do some networking and film an English interview there to promote the English version of her latest single. Gold Star has marketed it as her debut American single in an effort to rewrite her unsuccessful effort a few years ago. Gold Star would like to begin to promote her more online as well to reach more young fans, so she’ll film a cover video that will be uploaded to Gold Star’s Youtube channel, something they plan to have her do a semi-regularly from now on.

Important dates:

January 10: End of music show promotions.

January 18: Front Row Live Ent interview.

January 23: “Tango” cover video filming (to be uploaded: January 31).

GOLD STAR SOLOIST 3

He flies back out in the second week of the month to begin the North American leg of his world tour. He’ll tour for two weeks across the United States before he flies back to Seoul and has the remainder of the month free once again to recuperate and so that he can attend the company-wide meeting.

SILHOUETTE

Silhouette have a busy month without awards show to attend. On the second, their first day back to regular work after returning from the cruise and tour, they’ll hold a press conference to hype up their upcoming concerts. They’ll be asked and expected to answer questions about the concept (”til death do us part” / “seduction, desire, betrayal, revenge”), the songs they’ll be performing, and their feelings preparing for the concert without spoiling the set list or special stages. They’ll then hold four concerts over the course of the month, two in Seoul, one in Tokyo, and one in Los Angeles. In between concerts, they’ll fly to Bangkok to film their comeback M/V and shoot photos for the comeback.

January 2: Tonight 37.2°C press conference.

January 9: “Taller Than You” M/V filming.

January 15: Pre-release of “I Miss You”.

January 18: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Central City Millennium Hall in Seoul.

January 21-22: “You’re The Best” M/V filming, teaser photo shoot, and photo book shoot in Bangkok, Thailand.

January 25: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Shibuya Public Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

January 29: Tonight 37.2°C 19+ concert at Club Bound LA in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

ARIA

Aria has to do the final preparations for their comeback before it releases near the middle of the month. They’re running on quite a late schedule, perhaps a result of the poor management that’s slowly becoming infamous within the company, so both the album photo shoots and the M/V filming are rushed to be finished just before the comeback. Luckily, everything is still ready in time and the release goes off without a hitch. Unfortunately, “Eung Eung” doesn’t get the same attention “I’m So Sick” did, although it does succeed at outperforming their last two releases.

Important dates:

January 3: Comeback teaser photo and photo book shoot.

January 10: “Eung Eung” M/V filming.

January 18: Release of “Eung Eung” & Percent mini-album showcase, music show promotions continue through February 18.

ORIGIN

Origin begins their grand world tour this month with five dates in California. They’ll fly out to the United States for those five concerts before flying back to Seoul so that they can make it in time for the company meeting, though it will be close in timing. They’ll continue to tour for the next several months, but management passes down that Gold Star would really like to see them find mega-success in foreign markets this year and there are plans for both a Japanese comeback and a full English-language release before there are any plans for them to make a Korean-language comeback.

Important dates:

January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, Alien, MARS, 7ROPHY, Impulse).

January 16: Map of the Soul tour concert at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, USA.

January 17: Map of the Soul tour concert at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, USA.

January 22: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.

January 23: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.

January 24: Map of the Soul tour concert at Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, USA.

IMPULSE

Impulse has one more awards show performance in the form of the second day of the Golden Disk Awards. Before and after that, their priority for the month is to record their next comeback album. It’s their first full-length album since 2018. The sound is overall a bit brighter to match the spring season it will be released in, though the sleek sound they’ve headed toward recently remains in tact.

Important dates:

January 10: Performance at Golden Disk Awards Day Two at Gocheok Sky Dome (also performing: CHARM, WISH, Alien, MARS, 7ROPHY, Origin).

↳ PULS2

PULS2 will be doing a showcase tour in between recording for the full group comeback. They’ll be all over East Asia this month for the beginning of the tour, though they’ll stop back to Seoul in between stops.

Important dates:

January 17: Showcase tour concert at Broadway Theater in Macau.

January 20: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Divercity in Tokyo, Japan.

January 21: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Diverycity in Tokyo, Japan.

January 24: Showcase tour concert at Taipei International Convention Center in Taipei, Taiwan.

January 27: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Namba in Osaka, Japan.

January 28: Showcase tour concert at Zepp Namba in Osaka, Japan.

January 31: Showcase tour concert at Nusantra Hall in Jakarta, Indonesia.

FUSE

In place of any more awards show performances or attendances, Fuse gets back to touring. This time, they have two dates in Japan. It’s their first time touring in several months, so they’ll continue to rehearse beforehand to get everything down for the next few months of finishing their tour. Management is open about their plans for a sub-unit between the leader and main dancer now that the new year has begun, but the pair won’t begin working on their unit debut until next month.

Important dates:

January 9: La Rouge tour concert at Hiroshima Sun Plaza in Hiroshima, Japan.

January 21: La Rouge tour concert at Osaka-jo Hall in Osaka, Japan.

ELEMENT

Now that their comeback music is recorded, Element will throw themselves into mastering the choreography for the title track, as well as two of the album’s b-sides (the latter of which only involves the main vocal and maknae). At the end of the month, they’ll hold a mini fan-meeting to check in with (a few hundred) fans and will be expected to let slip that they’re working on a comeback to appease them. The fan-meeting will be short, but they’ll perform a few of their songs and get the chance to interact with fans who are brought up on stage.

Important dates:

January 31: Mini fan-meeting at Yes24 MUV Hall in Seoul.

FEMME FATALE

Femme Fatale continues their dome tour this month (see November’s schedule for special stages), with two stops in Osaka. While they’re in Seoul, they’ll get news of their comeback plans for the year (Gold Star promises them at least two comebacks) and they’ll receive the demo of their first comeback single of the year, “How You Like That”, before they go in to record it in the studio before the month comes to an end.

January 16: In Your Area World tour concert at Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan.

January 17: In Your Area World tour concert at Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan.

🎬 THE BASICS

Education: Graduated with a dual degree in Film and Global History

Occupation: Is currently a film freelancer in the camera department, who desperately needs money to pay rent every month lol.

Likes:

- The sound of rain tapping on my window

- Watching my plants rise and droop to the moving sun

- Cooking and experimenting with different cuisines; Japanese, Thai and Chinese are some of my favorites.

- Giving my husband and my cat their head rubs every night.

- Drawing, painting, and photography. (Here’s some of my works!)

- The feeling of accomplishment after you’ve gone through SO much for a project with your peers. To work on your own movie or short film, and finally seeing it done, is such a rewarding experience.

- To eat my Mac and Cheese with ketchup, nutritional yeast, and steamed broccoli. (Fight me lol. 🦖 )

- Eating chips with chopsticks.

- Medjool dates with a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter 😋

-Wearing oversized clothes, especially hoodies.

- Sitting at my reading nook, with my cat next to me on the chair.

Dislikes:

- The buzzing sound bees make when they fly.

- Slipping on my own chunk of hair on the ground; I have a lot of hair and I shed a lot.

- The heat, I may be from Thailand, but I am very much done with the blaring heat. One second I’ll look real cute with my face all done up, but the moment I step out, it’s already melting from my face.

- Going to sleep; there’s SO much more I could be doing right now!

- When my bangs desperately need a trim and is poking my eyes.

- Poor lighting, doesn’t matter if it is real life, just light it like you’re IN a film!! It’s so much more dramatic that way! (For real, come to my house, every corner is lit with some sort of a look/mood 😏)

- Loud noises; when people are yelling all the time, or something is loud, I get nervous when I can’t hear my own thoughts.

- People with bad attitude, a temper, or is just kind of mean in general. There is absolutely no excuse for you to be that way, and nothing productive comes out of it. Nuh-uh.

🎬 FUN FACTS

My parents hired a piano teacher when I was in elementary school, but because I didn’t enjoy her company (for some reason), I refused to absorb information. Little did I know, it would backfire me and would have absolutely no effect to her pay.

I’m that kid who always has 4 spare pencils and 5 erasers to lend out to my peers.

Will serenade to my cat every morning and night, so if you are ever my roommate, I apologize for my horrible singings.

Performed as a cave and pot in my high school production, and lemme tell ya, it is more difficult than it sounds.

Has no problem doing laundry in the morning, but the moment the sun falls, I will be too afraid to go down into my basement to do it. Some may say that it is an excuse for me to put laundry off for the next day, but I always tell my husband that there’s a “Babadook” in there. 👀

One time I stepped on a millipede, and I cried for 2 days because I felt really bad for it.

I’m actually VERY shy most of the times, so if you see me laughing a lot like a hyena, then it’s likely that it’s just me being awkward. OR I may just be having a good time, who knows.

I’m awful around kids, I am SO awkward and will stiff up like a rock (if you see me doing that, pls come safe me). One time this kid asked me why I laugh so much, so I simply just laughed some more while backing out of the room slowly. 🤦‍♀️

🎬 SOME FUN QUESTIONS!

What is something you wish you were gifted at doing?

I wish I could sing. My husband is a musician, and it looks like he’s having so much fun. There’s just something so freeing about it, as if it’s another language that takes time to become fluent in, but when you are, it’s so captivating and expressive. I don’t think I’m an awful singer, but is just too incredibly shy to sing in front of others.

What is the first movie you remember seeing in theater?

It may had been Disney’s Dinosaur (2000), not sure. All I remember was that there were a bunch of dinosaurs on screen, may had even been 3D with those glasses.

At one point, a tiger jumped at the screen, and I started crying. My mom and brother wanted to finish the movie, so my dad had to sit outside with me, until it was over. It was chill tho, my dad was teaching me different dinosaur names. 👶 🦖 🦕

What is the first thing you do when you get home?

Pants off, baby!! I don’t usually wear a bra, but if do, then I guess it’s bra’s off first. Then I instantly hop into my plaid boxer shorts hehee. 🤭

What has been the hardest thing for you to face or learn?

That people go through different stages of their life at different paces, and that is totally okay. When I was younger, I would always overwork, and as a result, I don’t really have a lot of time for myself. I did that, mostly, because I wanted to get a head start at everything, especially at my career. Now that I am 23-24, and had just graduated from Class of 2019, I’ve been getting film gigs since I was a sophomore, and is now a full time freelancer.

Yet, I was not satisfied, because I got to work with a 21 y/o in a position that was under her, and it made me feel momentarily incompetent; like I wasn’t doing well enough. But it will never be enough if that’s the mindset; I never considered that she skipped university and went straight into film, so circumstances were entirely different.

Meanwhile, there’s someone 10+ years older than me who is struggling to get the work I’d get, and that is okay too. What I should’ve done is feel happy for her, and use that to motivate myself to improve. As long as I never give up, and continue to do my best with a good attitude, everything will be just fine.

If you could give your younger self any advice what would it be?

That it’s okay to take a break sometimes, live life a little, and cherish all the happiness, sadness, heartbreak, and struggles that you are going through right now. Every tear will make you stronger, and genuine every smile will eventually pull you through.

Time goes by very quickly, and every stage in your life is a part of you, so make sure you remember how you get to where you are well.

Do you see the glass as half empty or half full?

Half full, just grateful that there’s any liquid in the glass at all, and is excited to acquire more with all the space I’ve got on top, ya know? 🤷‍♀️

What is the strangest thing you believed as a child?

That if you whistle at night, the ghosts will come find you. Or if you play hide and seek at night, then you’ve opened up some kind of portal that the ghosts will kidnap you away from this dimension forever.

Tbh, I think my grandma was just sick of me trying to learn how to whistle when I was in elementary school and of me running around the house at night, so she made these omen up lol.

What time do you usually get up in the morning?

Used to wake up at 13:00-14:00 all the time, but since I married an early bird, I’ve been up at 6:30-7:00 lately.

What time is your usual bed time?

Heeheee 1:00-2:00 in the morning, oops.

How has your birth order/characteristics of siblings affected you?

I have the loveliest older brother in the world, he’s 4 years older, and is very smart, diligent, athletic, and funny. Me being the only daughter, my parents are incredibly protective, so they’d always have my brother do everything for me.

It was a relief when I was younger, but as I enter high school, it became a little frustrating; I felt like I was living under his shadows and can never be considered independent. They’d also spend a lot more time training with him cuz he’s a national competitive swimmer.

Because of that, I had a lot of time to myself, so I experimented with my own interests and grew in my own way. As I’ve grown, I can definitely say that it’s made me a lot more independent and introverted haha. I absolutely dislike depending on anyone (Will be my last resort), but it’s also nice to know that whenever either of us fall, we’ll always have each other’s back.

OKAY SO

Basically, Virgil is kinda like Crowley. A demon who once was an angel who fell because he asked too much questions. His eyes aren't snake-like but he has four and hides them behind bangs and glasses. Lot of angst from not being to be "bad" but having to and absolutely not wanting the world to end because he loves it.

And, because I'm a slut for both ineffable husbands and Prinxiety, we have Roman as our kind-off Aziraphale. He still have those weird vibes because he doesn't sell any book of his book shop (oh and obviously there's a lot of theaters' script in here). He have the same problem with "what is good and what is bad" since he have a demon friend and kinda try to stop the Armageddon with him but Heaven isn't really okay with that.

Cue to a 6000 yo friendship/love story, both of them being idiots with their feelings...

I'm still thinking about what would the others be, but I feel like Patton as Gabriel (Less... Gabriel-ly, obviously), Logan as Newt and Janus as Anathema works really well ! And I don't do a lot of Loceit but... I do like them 👉👈

Fire alarms, loud bangs, specifically in regards to things being slammed, high-pitched ringing, shouting and arguing, the harsh clinking of silverware against glass plates or bowls, the bangs and rumbles of the ice machine in the freezer... I like the sound of idle cars, ripping paper, thunderstorms, crackling fire, Ironhide’s voice...

HOW ABOUT ALIENS?: hell yeah honestly.

DO YOU DRIVE?: not legally, no. :’)

IF SO, HAVE YOU EVER CRASHED?: nope! I’m a very good illegal driver.

WHAT WAS THE LAST BOOK YOU READ?: ah damn, I think I restarted Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett but I lost interest before the school year ended. Whoops.

DO YOU LIKE THE SMELL OF GASOLINE?: no.

WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW?: I literally just finished the first Iron Man movie. In theaters? Bumblebee, and I swear to god the scenes on Cybertron and the fighting scenes and Dropkick had me Excited.

WHAT’S THE WORST INJURY YOU’VE EVER HAD?: Jesus H. fucking Christ I’ve had so many. I got hit by a car late last year and fucked up my hip and didn’t get it checked out properly and I still have problems. I burned the hell out of my upper arm accidentally touching the grate over a fire pit while trying to put more wood on the fire. I got a concussion getting bucked off a horse and never got that checked out either. I almost broke my ankle just walking to go catch said horse out in the pasture, no particular cause, my ankle just. Gave out. I ran face-first into a wall in ballet class and somehow managed to twist my ankle almost completely backwards and dent my calcaneus, sprain my arm, and almost lose my two front teeth again. Never broken anything, as far as I know, but damn I am a disaster of a human being.

DO YOU HAVE ANY OBSESSIONS RIGHT NOW?: aside from Transformers? Not really. I have trouble focusing on more than one special interest at a time and Transformers has managed to keep me for over three years now WHOOPS.

DO YOU TEND TO HOLD GRUDGES AGAINST PEOPLE WHO DID YOU WRONG?: not really. I just try to stay away from them as much as possible. If anything it’s more about me being scared rather than still angry, but that just shows how shitty my life’s been I guess. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

IN A RELATIONSHIP?: nah. Single and either too afraid or too ‘relationships are a waste of time and aren’t worth the heartache no matter how lonely and desperate for attention and affection I might be’ to mingle. Or crushin’ on someone I probably shouldn’t be, to be honest.

Multi Facet Fables proudly introduces CINEFACETS, our upcoming new series paying tribute to the known universe of challenging and innovative filmmaking. Starting in July, we will be posting embedded videos of the best available free movies, for your enjoyment and edification. We plan to include all genres, and will strive to offer quality works spanning the entire history of film.

We will also occasionally include television and multimedia presentations. While some rigid purists evidently still make a big division between "pure cinema" and other media, we reject this distinction as antiquated and unhelpful. To cite a recent example, we agree with those who classify David Lynch's Twin Peaks revival series as a single 18-hour film.

Indeed, we are convinced that the very finest examples of "peak TV" – such as Good Omens, Stranger Things, Person Of Interest, Carnivale, The Leftovers, and Lost – are every bit as "cinematic" as the best of Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Welles, Deren, Eisenstein, or Malick. We would say the same for audiovisual spectacles by gifted and versatile musicians such as Pink Floyd, Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, and U2.

To whet your aesthetic appetites, we offer an archive of our own blog posts related to film, television, and multimedia works, featuring some 100 different topics. Chapter 5 - Blind Date

Friday afternoon came around a couple days later. Lunch with Barry on Wednesday had been fun—we just went to this little café and had homemade muffins and strawberry lemonade—and I started to feel like we were getting to be even closer friends. Which made me excited. Since I’d left my family and friends behind in Keystone, I hadn’t made many friends in Central. Cisco and Caitlin had sort of glommed onto me when they started showing up at the lab looking for Barry, but apart from them and Barry, I didn’t really know many people.

Friday afternoon had me banging my head on my desk, causing my mug of pens to rattle.

Finally Barry spun around in his desk chair, looking irritated. “What’s wrong, Heather?” he demanded.

“This. Doesn’t. Make. Sense,” I complained, punctuating each word with another head-desk.

“What doesn’t?”

“This blood spatter in this photograph is circular. But a moving person would leave elliptical droplets—more elliptical the faster they’re going. But. These. Are. Circular,” I muttered, hitting my head on my desk with the last couple words.

“That’s because they were staged. Those were left by a person standing with a dropper of blood,” Barry remarked.

I sat up from my desk. “For real?”

He nodded. “Yeah. I already took a peek at those photos.”

“Hey,” I protested teasingly. “It’s my case!” He knew I was joking. I actually really valued his input and opinion on cases I was stuck on. He chuckled too, spinning around in his squeaky chair a couple times.

“I know. But I was curious. And it’s not like you’ve never looked at the cases delegated to me.”

I smirked. “True.”

“So, you filming tonight?”

“I’m not, actually. I filmed and edited last night. I’m posting tonight but, uh… I have a date,” I commented. “My sister’s husband has a buddy who lives here in Central and my sister conspired with him to set me up on a blind date. We’re gonna get milkshakes and go see that play at the theater over on Metropolitan Avenue.”

“Cool. Looking forward to it?” Barry asked.

“No. I hate blind dates. And I’ve met some of my brother-in-law’s buddies. If this guy’s anything like those dude-bros… I’m going to hate every second of it.”

“Okay. How about this, you start getting too uncomfortable, you send me a text that says ‘SOS.’ I’ll come save you.”

“Barry, you know I couldn’t ask you to do that,” I pressed.

“You’re not asking me. I suggested it. I’m telling you that if he makes you uncomfortable, you let me get you out. Honestly, it’d be no bother. I’m not doing anything tonight so I’ll be free to come meet up with you,” Barry countered. I opened my mouth to keep protesting. “I want to do this, Heather.”

I sighed. “Fine. But only if it goes bad.”

“Deal.”

“Oh, hey, guess what?” I asked, changing the subject.

“What?”

“My subscribers think my apartment is haunted. In my last video, there was some light mirage—probably from taillights ‘cause it was red—and people kept asking if it was a ghost. It was pretty funny.”

Barry chuckled. “That is pretty good,” he agreed. “You sure it wasn’t The Flash?”

“Of course I’m sure. It wasn’t solid enough to be. But I appreciate the teasing,” I commented.

“Okay,” Barry teased, voice playful and expression joking.

“C’mon, Barry,” I argued with a smile. “Why would The Flash run past the background of my video? He probably doesn’t even know I exist.” Barry shrugged and went back to his work. I rolled my eyes and copied him. My forehead was aching where I’d hit it against the desk so many times and I was probably developing a bruise. Whoops.

Six in the evening had me waiting for my video to upload and process on YouTube while I was getting ready for my date—who would pick me up at seven. I was redoing my hair and touching up my day makeup for a more evening look. I’d changed from work clothes to date clothes and actually put on perfume. Usually I figured that my shampoo and deodorant made me smell acceptable, but for dates I’d put on perfume so I could make a really good first impression.

I had just finished pulling on my black flats and leather motorcycle jacket when the video finished processing. I published it, Tweeted and Tumbled it, then snapped my laptop closed. I glanced at my watch. It was quarter to seven.

I had my SOS text for Barry already written and pulled up so all I had to do was unlock my phone and hit Send if I started getting freaked by my blind date.

Popping my knuckles nervously, I peered out my living room window where it faced the road below. My sister insisted I’d be able to at least tolerate this guy, and I trusted her. What I didn’t trust was the fact that she didn’t know him well. I resisted the temptation to bite my lip so I wouldn’t rub off my lipstick prematurely and took deep breaths.

On my way! The text was from my date—Jason.

Great! I’ll be ready! I replied. I already was completely ready. Date purse on my shoulder and all.

A red streak trailed by yellow light zipped by the street below my apartment. I smiled. Maybe a Flash Sighting was a good omen.

Or maybe not.

Jason showed up at my door, looking exactly like I thought he would—like the dude-bro buddies of my brother-in-law’s that I’d already met. Blue jeans, athletic T-shirt under a leather jacket far more beat up than mine, and a snapback cap backwards on his head. His bangs poked through the little gap where the hat’s size could be adjusted. His hair was dirty blond. He had mild stubble, blue eyes, and a square-jaw. He was like a gym rat on steroids and a little intimidating. An inch or two shorter than Barry—though at my punitive height, tall was just tall—with broad shoulders and narrow hips.

I already wasn’t enjoying the evening.

But he surprised me for the first half-hour of the date when we went to get milkshakes. The play started at 7:30 so we’d have some time to drink our shakes and get to know each other. He was being kind and chivalrous, and for a while I was impressed. He showed up on time, he insisted on paying, he opened the doors for me, he even insisted on walking nearest to the road while we were on the sidewalk, claiming that he’d get hit first in the case of a runaway car.

I found myself pleasantly surprised and actually having a good time.

That changed after the play started.

Jason slouched in his seat, looking bored, one hand supporting his face. He kept making sarcastic, borderline rude criticisms about everything—the costumes, the songs, the acting, the character motivations—everything. It was ridiculous and immature.

I was already half-tempted to text Barry to save me. But, for the sake of being polite, I just rolled my eyes when Jason wouldn’t see me and tried to tune him out in favor of watching the play. It was one I really liked—The King and I. Who didn’t like Rodgers and Hammerstein? I tapped my fingers on my knee in time to the beats of the songs.

At intermission, I stood to stretch my knees from sitting for so long and take a peek at my phone. I’d felt it buzz earlier. It was a text from my sister. How’s it going with Jason? Call me when you get home!

Jason, apparently, was not enjoying the performance as much as I was. “What’s the point? No one randomly bursts out into song and dance in real life!” he complained, at least maintaining some form of manners by speaking quietly so the people around us wouldn’t glare at him—though he’d probably deserve it if they did.

“Obviously you’ve never visited my house,” I joked with a grin, not really thinking about being delicate.

He gave me a skeptical look. “For real?”

I smirked and nodded. “Yup!”

“So you don’t think musicals are boring?”

“Nope!”

“Okay. So you’re one of those girls,” he muttered.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I demanded, feeling offended but going for gentle.

Jason shrugged. “You’re a girl who likes musicals. There’s nothing wrong with liking musicals. I just don’t.”

I was going to sit out the second part of the play for the sake of being polite, but I just couldn’t with this guy. He had deliberately punctured my pride and poked fun at something I enjoyed. I couldn’t consider dating a guy like him.

I gave him a smile. “I’ll be right back. I’m just going to go to the bathroom.”

He nodded. “Okay.”

Snatching my purse—I hadn’t even taken off my jacket since the theater was cold—I slipped out of the auditorium and out into the lobby. I unlocked my phone and hit Send on my text to Barry.

SOS. Theater. Please.
