"Yeah." There's a little sharpness to his tone at first, but it doesn't last. He pushes out a deep sigh. "It was." It was a dumb accident and he can't even say he wouldn't do it again, because what scared kid wouldn't fight back?

Ichigo's practically radiating anger before he even talks. It makes Shiro regret opening up his mouth at all. His brain is so scrambling over all this that he can't even quite sort through how they ended up in this conversation. His brows furrow when Ichigo says he and Grimmjow are the same. He wants to argue. He opens his mouth to do so, but Ichigo's still going and the breath leaves Shiro's lungs, mouth closing. He feels chastised, and kind of confused; Ichigo's so annoyed, but he's pretty sure he's saying he did the right thing when he went to Grimmjow's after what happened. Which is also confusing, because he's been regretting it ever since it happened.

He doesn't know what to say. His jaw works, gaze aimed off to one side but not really registering much around them. He nods slightly, "I'd wanna know." He's in a position to be able to do something about it, and he would do something about it. Just like Grimmjow did. Dammit. "What makes you think he'll get over it? Maybe he did do that on his own and maybe he did fuck up, but so did I, big time."

That accusation hits him like a fist to the gut. Is he? It'd be easier that way, if Grimmjow didn't know he was even still around and didn't come looking. He doesn't really want that, though, does he? He swallows, shaking his head a fraction. "I don't know. Maybe." That makes him sound like a fucking coward.

Standing at the counter, he hears Ichigo approach in a sort of distant way. There's a lot to think about right now and his brain is turning it into a jumbled mess. He's distracted and upset and the touch of warm hands on his hips surprises him a little. He straightens, then caps the bottle on the counter one handed, other hand occupied by his glass. He hesitates, but turns around to face Ichigo.

That comment is so unexpected he pauses, taking a second to process it. “I didn’t even know there was a body to try hiding until it was too late. But no. I wouldn’t'a known how.” He doesn’t think he would have even tried. He shrugs. “I dunno. I think maybe your first is always supposed to bother you. I had never seriously wanted to kill anyone. I didn’t wanna kill that kid either. I was just scared and the stairwell was too close.”

He can’t look at Ichigo, but he’s still listening, still trying to have this conversation he doesn’t particularly want to have. It’s probably about time some of his past actions come around to bite him in the ass. “Yeah, but I shouldn’t'a been so passive.” He’s not a passive person, not anymore. He refuses to be. “Or I shouldn’t'a went to Grimmjow after I got my shit pushed in. I should'a known he’d get involved.” He waves a vague motion. “You know how he is. Evidently.” Which is pretty fucking weird to think about, but he sees the attraction for both sides and can’t fault either one. Ichigo is right about at least one thing; Shiro was not in control of himself or anything else in that situation. If he had been, it would have turned out a lot different. That doesn’t really offer any comfort, though. There’s not a lot he’s ashamed of, despite the overwhelming amount of shit he probably should be, but this is one of those things that eats him up.

“No, I don’t know.” He shakes his head. “He probably just assumes I’m dead. If I were him, knowin’ how I’d been, that’s what I would think.” That’s definitely where he was headed. “But Grimmjow wasn’t falsely accused. He beat the fuck outta that guy. It just wasn’t random and unprovoked.” He also has to assume they added drug charges and who knows what else.

He hears that complaint once he’s out the door and snorts a small, mostly dry laugh. “It’s my house, I’m not leavin’, you don’t have to chase me.” He hears those stomping footsteps and thinks Ichigo’s going to anyway, though. It’s…kind of endearing. Kind of comforting, knowing that even in the middle of kind of freaking out and revealing how shitty of a person he is, Ichigo’s not quite ready to just walk out. He pulls a heavy glass from the cupboard and fills it. He downs half of it in two quick swallows and tops off again.

like, i agree with the main principle that they need to hire writers from other backgrounds. for sure. no arguments. i also agree in general, said so in my own post, that this episode is more of a "learning experience for white people" anti-racism story than a "catharsis for black people in the struggle" story. but there's an undercurrent in these criticism for the episode that i don't agree with, being that "white writers should never touch the subject of anti-racism because they could never understand it" (or conversely, "men should never write about feminism because they could never understand it") and like, tbh that's just not a premise i agree with. politically or artistically. being from a specific background doesn't actually guarantee that you understand your struggles or that you have the best ideas for liberation out there (if it were, rishi sunak and suella braverman wouldn't be in the positions they are, doing the things they do). and in dw itself, like, "hiring writers of color" doens't mean the episode will automatically be great. for example, i appreciate that rosa exists, but there's a lot of moments in rosa that diminish the episode for me and held me back from embracing it as truly anti-hegemonic, truly anti-racist piece of art. like for all the work it does in showing viewers the reality of segregation and showing the catharsis / admirability of people fighting it, it takes 10 steps backwards saying obama's election was "a victory" for anti-racism (ah yes the anti-racism of bombing yemen, syria, somalia, iraq....) + having rosa be congratulated in the bloody white house as "a symbol of her victory" or having a satellite named after her as the "end goal" of her work (ie. all symbols that just stand in for white "tolerance" rather than actual black liberation). conversely, if the person writing has a good grip on the issue, even if it's alien to them, yeah,,, i do think they can portray it well. and that they *should* try, because something genuinely interesting / pertinent may come from the exercise. and like, from my pov, living where i do, having unfortunately witnessed and lived thru racism......... yeah? the racists in dot and bubble and the doctor's reaction to them are pretty realistic to me (shrugs))? people criticism them as "caricatures" and ... i don't see it, honestly? like rich people really are Like That. racist are exactly like that. like i can agree with the crit for example that having ricky or a character like ricky at the end, saying the same stuff as lindy and co, would have driven the point home better (of "if you live in a society founded on racism, you will inherit racist views even if you're a "good" person most of the time"), but like, overall i do think the "cartoonism" or bluntness of the finetime's awfulness was a strong writing choice. i do think rtd make the right call there, and even if he's white, he got a good grip on how a black man like the doctor would react (like, pretty realistic to how irl black medical doctors speak about their experiences, for example). also lbr, some audience members are so dense about this (even a lot of people on /r/gallifrey said they *didn't* understand what the problem was in the end! ) and like... i don't think this should be that controversial? that's the magic of writing. that if you take the time to listen, learn and observe, you can write experiences other than your own pretty competently. anyway, back to the initial common ground, would a black writer have given them more specificity? most likely.do need to bring more of them (and if anything else, as good as the 3 boys in boys club are, it does get a little tiring to have only 3 voices in the choice for the last 5 years)? absolutely. but i dont think that means that rtd shouldnt have written this episode, or that him being white diminished how much of what the text actually says. and i think it would be a lot more productive to try to understand it on its own merits rather than defaulting to a kind of "locus theory essentialism" in media analysis.

i'm still baffled that an episode about racism had absolutely zero writers of colour. like what the fuck

Random headcanon: Both Odysseus and Penelope were given a "photographic memory" by Athena. When Athena had "forsaken" Odysseus it was taken away. Makes it nice because a lot of the more fucked up parts of the Odyssey are a bit more "fuzzy" for him. And he hates feeling "so out of sorts". He gets it back though.

Also Athena technically took Penelope under her "wing" like, one month before Odysseus.

Unpopular Helen Opinion: In MY FICS, (It's okay if you don't agree!) She is built like Rose Quartz from Steven Universe. She doesn't have a perfect "hourglass figure". She's got some pudge on her tummy. Girl is TALL (Demigod) and CHUBBY. One of the important components of Helen and Menelaus' relationship is that they are both strong enough to lift each other. Also she's the most beautiful woman in the world and chubby women are hot af lskdjf She also SUCKS at singing. She's good at wrestling and spear work. (Sparta. I also love athletic women. Plenty of chubby women are also athletic af. If you think otherwise, literally look up women's Olympic sports participants.)

I feel so bad about it. 😭 I'm a freak who likes Odysseus/Menelaus (Big BROTP) I think it's because Odysseus is just... SO MEAN to Diomedes. And when he's not mean, he's just neutral. There is not really any "Diomedes, you're the best guy!". Especially when have Sthenelus and Diomedes saying I love you to each other To ME, they are like co-workers who work GREAT together on the battlefield and on missions, but never do anything outside of that.

When Diomedes asks for help, Odysseus sprints away from battle. When Diomedes compliments him before the night raid, Odysseus literally is like "Dude, you're not the only person who knows I'm good at stealing. Let's go."

Odysseus is an asshole but he's still so mean to Diomedes! 😭 ESPECIALLY WHEN DIOMEDES IS SO FUCKING NICE TO ODYSSEUS!!! I know that's what probably makes them so compelling to so many lovely folks but I love fluff BECAUSE I'm so tired of toxic relationships irl. I don't...I don't see how I can make OdyDio fluffy 😥 With OdyDio, I feel like I'm watching my bestie (Diomedes) get back with their toxic ex who mistreats them (Odysseus). Diomedes is actually quite polite to the others. Even when Agamemnon scolds him, he tells Sthenelus to think nothing of it. He compliments Odysseus! He listens to the gods when they tell him "Hey stop fighting!" and listens to Athena! Like he's violent and a killing machine but he's respectful! He's a traumatized, respectful, killing machine! He bitches at Paris but everyone has done that! That's something everyone partakes in /j

It bothers me even more because when Odysseus is with Penelope, he's so wonderful and loving? And that the Odyssey, literally Odysseus' story/Epic, doesn't even really mention Diomedes? That goes to show how little Diomedes means to Odysseus.

And since Odysseus runs away from Diomedes when he asks for help, it boggles my mind that books earlier, he goes into a rage when his friend gets killed!

They ARE kind of friends/frenemies during the end of the war but it's a weird thing where Diomedes cares about Odysseus but Odysseus tolerates him. Like he left him to die. I love Odysseus. He's my special little guy but he treats Diomedes, another special little guy, like shit 😞

They also have a fairly large agegap, (Odysseus being one of the older kings while Diomedes is the youngest. If you bring up pederasty, you will be smited.) and have very little in common other than them both being Athena's pets. Odysseus is a fucked up lil warrior trickster who loves his wife and child more than life itself while Diomedes is a young child soldier boy who is incredibly duty bound and war is where he feels most comfortable.

Also just...Most of anything about OdyDio (fanart/fanfic/etc.) it's of them fighting or bickering or betraying each other or being very sexual. Even OdyPenDio STILL feels very "OdyDio... + Penelope in the footnotes". I already plan to write Odysseus (and Penelope) as Aspec CODED and so I...just really don't care for that??? There's barely ANYTHING of them being soft. BECAUSE THEM TWO TOGETHER just aren't soft... I personally don't like couples that are mean to each other 😭 (I'm not even including the whole "betrayal with the Pallidium" because it makes me sad to think about. I don't consider it canon.)

I haven't been keeping up with the tag bc I've been behind and didn't want spoilers, but I saw mention of there being a theory that Tanguish is a saint, and in reading a big chunk of chapters last night, especially 41 and 42, I had some thoughts

Helsknight and his relationship to knighthood is complicated at best and very much a... a job he resents but has grown kind of fond of aspects of but is otherwise largely kind of a pain

He came to know he was going to be a perfect knight in the ways that Welsknight can't be (these details are fuzzy, its going on 7am) or maybe tries to hold himself to it bc Wels ... listen this isnt the point I'm getting at but you know what I mean

Tanguish had a laughable idea of Helsknight, like, shopping around for which church fit him, and honestly, I don't think it's that far off the truth? it feels so much like Helsknight had an obligation to uphold to be a knight, and while he did do his research and learning before deciding, how fitting is Blood and Steel for the person Helsknight had built himself into?

the point I'm getting at here, is that, what if there hadn't been any kind of... particularly strong tug of devotion? or if there was, it's waned a lot over the years? and now there's the awe of divinity and wanting to submit his being to this one cause, this one purpose?

and the encounter with the paladin... I'm just sayiiiing...

the title of the fic does also carry that format of Saintliness with it, yknow?

lydia wasn't angry. no. she felt utter betrayal. if emma already knew how lydia felt about stiles, then why sleep with him? if anything, there were whole other ways that her little sister could approach it. any other way. yet, here they were. running her fingers through her red hair and sucking in a breath as she took in the night air around her.

hearing the footsteps behind her, lydia didn't bother to even turn around. just letting out a low laugh, "you already knew and you decided to do this." a scoff escaping her lips. a little bit of visible mist evaporating. "what more do you want from me now? last i check, you don't need anything else." at this point, she just wanted to scream.

YEAHHHHHH THAT SCENE IS SO. IT'S SO!!!!! i think about it a lot, it's like. sometimes everything actionable has been done and everything just hurts a lot and all you can do is hug someone. and stay there as long as they need. it's SO.

for a bit more of that, from later on in the same scene (which is a bit of an extended scene but i refuse to apologize for that, after all i've put everyone through in that fic lskdjf)-

The threat of the panic attack resuming seems less and less likely, but that doesn’t mean everything’s blown over. Roy can feel, under his hands and against his chest, the way that Jamie takes a deep, steadying inhale, and the way that he chokes on it when he lets it out. Not much, at least, not enough that Roy is afraid for him, but it happens. It’s just a sound, a quiet sob, and honestly? That, too, is good news as far as Roy is concerned. Because Jamie hadn’t stifled it. He hadn’t bit it back or swallowed it, hadn’t lurched away from Roy or flinched when he realized he’d let it out. Jamie just let himself make the noise, had let Roy hear it, and didn’t react like he needed to protect himself from the consequences, and that… Roy is prouder of him for that than he can remotely try to express. They’ve probably been here long enough that it’s starting to get ridiculous that they’re still there, but Roy isn’t inclined to rush things. He settles meditatively into standing there, holding Jamie and waiting. Every so often his hand drifts in a well-worn pattern, rubbing the trembling back under his palm while the other maintains its steady, firm grip on the back of Jamie’s neck. The day has begun to grow colder around them as it wears later, but Roy isn’t not going to be the one to let go first. Maybe he can’t fix fuck-all about anything, but this he can do. At the very least, this is something that he can do.

if you like military stuff i’d recommend generation kill (less so on the hot guys front tho lskdjfs but it’s one of all time faves), strike back has three different sets of hot leads and is pretty good if a little cheesy sometimes

six which imo only gets good in s2 (i’m actually sad it got canceled) but barry is hot so worth it for that alone
