WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION
Pairing: Whiskey x reader
You've had your head down in the intricate mechanics of the nanotracker-brainwave transmitter you've been perfecting. A tiny piece of complex technology that will come in handy for Jack's next mission. The chip itself is built in the shape of a midge wing so that it can be encased in an amber-like jewel and given as a gift to the target.
The ache in your neck is threatening to shut down the whole operation but you push through, mentally scheduling some painkiller and a company-covered massage session. There's only three more connections and then you can call it a day.
You hear his boots before he arrives, clacking down the hallway to the lab and cringe. Your face is a mess of sweat, your hair rumpled and sticking out every which way, and you know exactly what these magnifying goggles do to your face, especially with the bags you're packing from lack of sleep and hours of staring at this chip.
Not that it matters. Jack Daniels is a beautiful tall drink of a man, out there, running around, playing the mysterious hero. And you're here with a coffee stain on your labcoat nerding around with wires and transmitters. You're too old and too smart to be crushing on a field agent, much less a major stakeholder of the company.
"Hi, Daniels," you say as he enters the lab, not even looking up, afraid of losing your place in the wiring. "I'm still working on the chip, but if you're looking for that compuwatch I've repaired it. It's in the cabinet."
"Thank you, darlin'. You been here all day?" He walks the length of the lab to stand behind you, looking over your shoulder into the magnified workstation. He's close enough that you can feel his body heat, hear the shift of his clothes. "That's it, huh."
"Yeeeep," you drawl out as you make a delicate wiring connection. "I told you I'd make it pretty."
"Pretty is as pretty does."
You snort out a laugh, trying to hide your fluster. "Thanks. I'll put that away for another time when I'm not such a damn mess."
"Honey, if looks could kill, you'd be a weapon of mass destruction."
Ugh, this man. Why does he have to flirt with everyone all the time? But. That thought helps calm you down. He flirts with everyone. All the time. Let it go.
"Daniels, this look is someone who's been hit with a weapon of mass destruction."
He chuckles softly. "You gonna be working on this thing all night too?"
"Most likely. It's almost done, but there will be testing."
"Well then," he sighs as he walks away, heading to the cabinet for the repaired watch, "I'll leave you be. Just wanted to check on the progress and come down to...thank you. You need a guinea pig for that transmitter tonight, you give me a call. You know where I am."
"Thanks. Have a good night, Daniels."
"You too, darlin'. Don't forget to take a break and eat somethin'."
And then his heels click on down the hall and they're gone.
Well. That wasn't so bad. You kept your cool. No problem. You'll work through this crush, get used to his flirting, get on with your work in no time.
At least another hour passes before you feel you can break from the work and come back without being too lost. Your neck and shoulders complain as you sit up and stretch, turning on your swivel stool to get a view that's anything other than this workstation--
--and you're rewarded by a lab table bearing a thermos, a styrofoam food container from your favorite takeout place, and a bouquet of pink roses.
Shit.
Shit.
Damn that man.

《 Chapter 18
》 Chapter 20
All chapters
Explanation: Kimber joins Tech on an afternoon flight.
Late the following morning, the Bad Batch were returning to the area where they'd left the ship after going on a run through the island. However, instead of it just being a regular run, Kimber had insisted on making it a race for fun, which the Clones gladly obliged to.
"Ha! I win!" cried Wrecker as he reached the ship first, naturally being the fastest since he was also the tallest in the group.
Crosshair came up just behind Wrecker with Kimber directly at his heels.
"Beat you, sunshine," he said to her with a triumphant smirk.
"Hey, I would've beat you had you not parkoured off that tree in front of me," Kimber retaliated, giving him a playful shove in the arm.
"You kicked dirt up at my eyes," he stated.
She snickered. "Only because you deserved it."
Of course, being the Bad Batch, the Clones played dirty in the race and Kimber gladly joined in that. If anything, she excelled at it just as well if not a little better than the others.
"Kimber also tried jumping me from behind," put in Wrecker, but then he laughed. "Didn't work out for you, did it?"
Her eyes squinted as she grimaced at him.
"Seeing her fall flat on her face was rather amusing," said Crosshair with a hand on his hip, still grinning teasingly.
Bemused at his taunting, Kimber scoffed and said back, "Oh, you're gonna get it, Crosshair. Mark my words."
Still smirking, he just put a toothpick in his mouth without a word.
Right then, Hunter, Echo and Tech all arrived at once, jogging their way over to them.
"Took you three long enough," said Wrecker as they joined them.
"Not all of us are as fast as you, Wrecker," commented Echo.
With a slight push up on the bridge of his goggles, Tech added, "It has also been proven better to move at a slower pace in order to conserve energy."
"Whatever you say, Tech," said Wrecker.
Hunter didn't say anything and instead had his eyes on Kimber. She caught his gaze right away and offered him a subtle smile. Neither of them could stop thinking about the previous night when they decided they wanted to be together and how much happier they now felt. It was almost unbelievable that it had all actually happened; that they both truly felt the same for each other after believing otherwise for some time.
Kimber begrudgingly averted her eyes so as to not catch the attention of any of the others. Hunter wanted to keep their relationship secret from the others for a little longer, simply because he felt the secrecy made it a bit more fun, to which she agreed. He had fallen asleep next to her bed during the night and she had to quickly shoo him out before he was caught.
"Well, I shall be back," Tech suddenly said, walking back to the Marauder while everyone else dispersed elsewhere.
“Where is Tech off to?” Kimber asked Hunter curiously, who came up beside her.
“He’s going to go fly the Marauder around for a while,” he answered. “That way, we won’t run into problems with the engine since it hasn’t been run in a few days.”
She nodded in understanding. She watched Tech enter the ship by himself, immersed in his datapad, like usual. Admittedly, she felt bad that he was going off alone. Something inside her wanted to go with him and keep him company.
“I’m going to go with him,” Kimber told Hunter, lightly tapping his shoulder. Then she whispered to him, “Don’t get too lonely without me.”
He grinned pleasantly and whispered back, “I’ll be counting down the seconds until you return.”
She flashed him a smile before quickly turning away and walking to the ship. As she got to the top of the ramp, she turned back around and, after making sure no one else was around to see, blew the Sergeant a kiss. He pretended to catch her kiss in the air and then brought his closed fist to his lips, which made her blush as she ducked into the Marauder.
“Hey Tech,” she said as she walked into the cockpit where Tech was powering up the ship. “I heard you’re taking the ship on a run. Mind if I join you?”
Tech looked up at her after hearing her speak and was a little surprised to see her there, but he gave her a small grin and replied, “You are more than welcome to join me, Kimber. The company would be greatly appreciated.”
Now that she had his permission to tag along, Kimber slipped into the other pilot’s seat, watching out the front window as the ship was lifted off the ground and it took off into the sky. Once it leveled out, all she could see was the vast, blue ocean ahead of them. Even though she had gotten to see an ocean on Kamino, this was different since Bestine was less dark outside than Kamino was. She could see the light of the sun reflecting off the waves and it was a beautiful sight to behold.
“Do you enjoy watching the ocean, Kimber?” Tech asked, noticing the far-off look in her eyes.
Glancing back over at him, Kimber answered, “Well, I grew up on a desert planet, Tech, so there wasn’t exactly a lot of water to see.”
“That is a fair point,” he replied, realizing his slight blunder.
She snickered at him and continued to watch out the window for a few minutes. After a little bit, she then spoke, "You know, I never did thank you properly for helping me with putting together my armor, so I want to say thank you. It really turned out perfectly."
"I merely gave you suggestions that you followed. The true art of your design came from you," he pleasantly responded. As she smiled at him, he then added, "I do also wish to convey my personal apologies for the way the Prime Minister treated you. His behavior was unfair and unjust."
"Thanks, Tech. I don't know what I would have done had Lama Su tried to take me away...so I'm glad you boys were there."
"Of course. You are part of our squad, after all, and we were not going to let the Prime Minister get in the way of that."
Kimber was touched to hear Tech say this. He wasn't usually as open emotionally as maybe Echo or Hunter, so to hear him express such sentiments to her was really moving.
"That means a lot to me to hear you say that," she said to him.
He gave her a nod in response. "How are you adjusting to your new life with us?"
Kimber exhaled loudly in thought. "It's...challenging, I'll admit. The training is hard, but I know it's necessary and I'm willing to do it. Otherwise...I'm happy."
"Excellent. Your happiness is vital, so it's pleasing to hear that you're adjusting well," Tech said as he steered the ship.
She smiled. "I never imagined I would end up with a group of Clones like you guys."
Tech nodded and stated, "Likewise, we never thought we'd have a civilian woman in our squad. As Clones, we would primarily work with other Clones and, on occasion, the Jedi. Having you join us felt...like the right choice."
"You really are too sweet," Kimber commented.
He then held up his index finger and stated, "Technically, the word 'sweet' applies to a flavor of food that's of a sugary nature. The proper word usage in this instance would be 'kind' or 'friendly' or even perhaps 'generous'."
Kimber chuckled in amusement. While Tech's literal nature was probably a bit annoying to some, it was endearing to her. His brothers gave him a hard time about it most of the time, so she was more patient about it for that reason. That and sometimes, it was actually enjoyable hearing him talk about things he knew. He was passionate about knowledge and she saw nothing wrong with that.
"Very well. You are too generous, Tech," she said to humor him, giving him a pleasant smile. She looked back out the window, seeing a few islands below them. "What can you tell me about Bestine?" she then asked him.
Tech pushed up his goggles just a touch and proceeded to tell her, "Bestine is, of course, an aquacultural planet vastly covered in oceans and small islands and is part of the Corellian Trade Spine in the Inner Rim. There were issues with colonization in the early days of this planet's history, but eventually, an island paradise was brought about. It's also well known for its ship repair and construction industry. The Republic held a fleet on this planet in the early days of the war."
"Fascinating," Kimber commented, genuinely interested. She could tell he was enjoying sharing information with someone who would listen. She then decided she would indulge him a little more and asked him something that she already knew about just to further give him a chance to share what he knew: "Did you know that there is connected history between Bestine and Tatooine?"
"Indeed," he responded. "A transport called the Dowager Queen full of Bestinian colonists crash landed on Tatooine after a sandstorm. The survivors established the Bestine Settlement and the city of Eisley, which was later renamed Mos Eisley to coincide with the neighboring city of Mos Espa."
Kimber folded her arms and propped her feet up on the dashboard of the ship. "You're right. Mos Eisley was built around the wreckage of the Dowager Queen and the ship was transformed into a first-class hotel. It's a very popular location for all the trade shows that come to Tatooine."
"How interesting."
"You certainly know your stuff."
"Well, I don't spend so much time on my datapad for nothing."
"I suppose that's true."
A few more minutes of silence passed until Kimber noticed that Tech was beginning to steer the Marauder straight up into the sky.
"What are you doing?" she asked him.
"We're just leaving the planet's atmosphere for a little bit," he explained.
The ship broke through the clouds and they were met with a sea of black full of glittering stars. After flying a little further out, Tech then pressed a few controls and put the ship into hovering mode where the two of them now sat, staring into the endless void of space.
"This really is a wondrous sight," Kimber said, gazing dreamily at the stars. "How I would love to see this with Hunter...."
Tech glanced over at Kimber and took notice of the wonder in her eyes. Even though they'd taken her to a few different planets already, they'd never really taken the time to enjoy the sight of the stars in space and he figured this was her first time ever really doing so. He felt a pleased smile cross his face. She looked happy. Even though he didn't always outright say or show it, he was glad she was with them.
He said her name to get her attention and when she looked in his direction, he told her, "I have another personal inquiry I wish to make of you...however, I fear it may be impertinent of me to do so."
"Tech, you can ask me anything," she reassured him, "and if I am uncomfortable answering, then I'll tell you."
He nodded and then proceeded to say, "Since the day we found you, your physical recovery has come along marvelously...but how are you faring with your psychological recovery?"
Kimber hummed in understanding, seeing now why he might've been hesitant to ask such a question. "That has definitely not been easy. I still have nightmares sometimes, though none as bad as the one on Rishi...but Echo and Hunter have been helping me."
"Echo is certainly the right candidate for assisting in your recovery...though how has Hunter helped you?"
She clenched her jaw to keep her face from revealing the truth of Hunter's true involvement and said in answer, "I believe he's been able to sense my distress with his heightened senses because every time I wake up from a nightmare, he's been there to help console me and calm me down."
"I see," Tech said.
"Yeah...so things are slowly getting better," she added.
"That is good news to hear. You seem happy and I merely wanted to be sure you weren't still suffering in any way and just putting on a front for the rest of us."
She snickered. "Even if I tried, you lads are far too observant for me. I wouldn't be able to hide anything like that from you guys."
"Nor should you have to. We all look out for each other here."
Tech and Kimber both shared grateful smiles.
Then Kimber said to him joyfully, "That means the world to me, Tech. Thank you."
He bowed his head and replied, "My pleasure, Kimber."
They both leaned back in their chairs, admiring the view in front of them. At least, Kimber did. It didn't take long for Tech to whip out his datapad and start typing things out on it.
"What sort of things do you have in that datapad?" she inquired curiously.
While keeping his eyes on the screen, he responded, "Ship schematics, weapons information, planet histories and details, profiles of important figures in the Republic, battle strategies, notes I've taken from our previous exploits, hacking systems and programming...many things."
She turned sideways in her seat to face him, bringing her legs back down. "Can you...can you show me? And teach me about some of those things?" she asked a little shyly.
Tech faced her, puzzled. "You want me to share my knowledge with you?"
With an encouraging smile, she replied, "I would love it. Will you?"
To say Tech was pleased that Kimber was showing an interest in his passion would have been an understatement. He swiftly turned in his chair, now facing her also, grinning from ear to ear.
"Gladly," he said.
Back at base camp, Echo approached Hunter, who was standing alone with his arms folded and staring up at the sky. He'd been doing that for a few minutes and Echo started getting curious.
"You looking for something?" Echo asked him.
Hunter cast a glance at him briefly before looking back up. "Tech and Kimber have been gone for a couple of hours. I thought they'd be back by now."
Putting a hand on Hunter's shoulder, Echo told him, "I'm sure they're fine. If they were in any trouble, we would've heard from them."
"I know you're right. I just can't help but be concerned."
"You worry too much, Hunter. Kimber is just fine."
Hunter gave him a perplexed look. "What makes you think I'm only thinking about Kimber?"
Echo simply grinned deviously at him.
Before either of them could say anything more, they heard a ship approaching and the Marauder came flying in above their heads, preparing to land a few yards away from them. Seeing their ship, the two of them started making their way back to meet the other two. As the ramp to the Marauder lowered, Kimber and Tech stepped down, still in mid-conversation.
"...and that's why, in such a situation, it would be more beneficial to use a seismic charge," they heard Tech say.
"Ah, I see. That certainly would make more sense than using your standard weapons system," replied Kimber.
"My point exactly. Well, thank you for accompanying me, Kimber."
"It was my pleasure, Tech."
With that, Tech bowed his head to her and then noticed Hunter and Echo coming towards them.
"What took you two so long?" Hunter asked, his hands on his hips.
"Simply lost track of the time, Sarge," Tech casually informed him before just walking off, immersed yet again in his datapad.
Both Hunter and Echo watched him walk away and then looked to Kimber for an explanation.
"Tech was regaling me with lots of facts and information," she informed them, looking pleased.
Hunter heaved a sigh and said, "I'm sorry about that."
"What? No, don't apologize. I asked for it," she clarified. They raised their eyebrows at her and she went on, "I've hardly been away from Tatooine until recently and I barely know anything about the rest of the galaxy. I want to know more about the places we go to and the things we see. Tech knows so much and so I asked him to educate me a bit."
"And you enjoyed it?" Echo questioned.
With a grin, Kimber looked right at him and asked back, "I'm smiling, aren't I?"
Unable to argue that point, both Echo and Hunter just exchanged glances and shrugged, smirking in amusement.
"Well, I'm sure that made Tech happy," Hunter commented.
Kimber turned and looked to where Tech had gone, leaning against a tree and tapping on his datapad...with the hint of a small smile on his face.
"Yeah...," she replied gladly. "I think it did."
