Ever since I watched Kubi I've been watching more movies starring Takeshi and thinking about his oeuvre... Kubi, Gohatto, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Gonin... All movies about men and masculinity and homoeroticism and gay sex and violence. Like had anyone written anything about this. I'm sure someone has. I've never thought very seriously about Takeshi before but I'm now a bit fascinated.

"Akira VS Pikachu" by Yoshihiro Togashi
Togashi has participated in some doujinshi circles in the late 90s with Kazushi Hagiwara (Bastard!!) and other famous manga artists. In 1997, he contributed to Hagiwara's "Wonderful Fight" (Wanda Furya Fight) doujinshi, with this 7-page manga (pp.33-39).
Besides some characters from "Virtua Fighter" and Pikachu from "Pokemon", the last scene is a reference from the 1995 movie "Gonin" (The Five).
When the hitman Ichiro Kyoya, played by Takeshi Kitano, fails to hit the target, he hands the weapon to his partner Kazuma, saying that gun was useless. The quote "Dame da, kono teppo" (ダメだこの鉄砲) has become very famous.

In the manga, Togashi (Takeshi) fails to hit Pikachu with his gun. Instead, he ended up dodging the bullets and dismembering everyone.
The scene of Takeshi holding the umbrella while shooting other men is also famous. The actor had a motorcycle accident in 1994, so the eyepatch his character wears in the movie was because his right eye was still leaking fluids. Togashi drew him without the eyepatch.

tumblr won’t let me upload video of this scene no matter what I do :/
I watched GONIN for the first time in like late 2021 or early 2022, went into it expecting schlocky yakuza action film (which it is) and Tsurumi Shingo playing a sexy, abusive wakagashira (which he does.) But got completely blindsided by one of the most emotionally devastating gay tragedies in a film I have yet seen. This scene makes me want to cry every time. And then you have the aftermath where Mitsuya is struggling and failing to cope without Bandai... His revenge... Going to Iida to bring Bandai’s ashes to his mother... It’s just really good.

I dedicated these love songs to him.

where is it now?
It's just another faded dream.

Spring 2023 - Week 6 in Review
Hello folks, and welcome back to Wrong Every Time. We’re halfway through the spring season at this point, which means most new shows have lost their opening act glamor, and I can start figuring out what’s actually worth following this season. I’ll obviously be catching up on The Witch From Mercury at some point, but as for new arrivals, it seems like Tengoku Daimakyou is the one worth checking…

Nuove suonerie
