Episode 1100: Even More Gear 5 Analysis
Oh my god i loved this episode. The Egghead animation style just lends itself so well to the Gomu Gomu no Mi and Gear 5 specifically. Look at him he's so silly :)
These two moments from previous episodes show how gear 5 has influenced Luffy's mastery over his fruit (using gear 3 w/o Haki or going gear 2nd first) and consequently, how Gear 5 has affected luffy as well (luffy getting fired up over the holo-sweets)
Most of my favorite g5 moments are of luffy using Gomu Gomu no Rocket - like his big lightning-bolt playground moment in the Kaido fight :) Some people say Gatling is his signature move, but Rocket is the first one we ever see him use, and I think given how often he uses it day-to-day, Rocket is the move he's really perfected.
Using the fluidity and silliness of G5 to his advantage, you can see Luffy pulling out of the way of Lucci fast by coiling his arm up like a grapevine.
This moment shows Luffy's mastery of Gomu Gomu no Rocket, because of how Luffy is able to let go of the antenna and absorb the recoil in a way that doesn't launch him into the sun. Recoil is one of Luffy's biggest advantages/disadvantages of rubber and i'm so excited that he really has a full handle on it now. Devil Fruits definitely aren't perfect, but it's the years of experience Luffy has that makes him feared as an Awakened Fruit user.
I also loved Luffy's new whack-a-mole move - battle instinct is one of Luffy's strong suits, and I love how Awakening opens up luffy to a whole new variety of improvisation techniques! He's in a silly cartoon, and he loves it, but more importantly he understands it.
This! This right here is what I was eagerly watching the whole episode in 0.5 speed for. Luffy uses the blur in his arm to speed it up impossibly fast, spinning the multiple points of animation so he can throw his entire body into that punch. Luffy is actively using the medium itself to his advantage - because the plasticity isn't an animation technique to him, it's all real.
This is just an adorable Luffy moment, and we can see the confusion of trying to track a speeding Lucci physically manifest in his head-shake. Not like, a powers-relevant gear 5 moment, but i really loved it he's sooo silly! He's so powerful, but he's also still our Luffy :)

I have THOUGHTS. And OPINIONS. About one piece.
Y'all are here on this part, so you're going to hear about them.
First off, when was the first time we see Gear Second? In the fight against Blueno, right?
WRONG.
It was in Water 7 against the Franky Family. I forget his name, but the dude in the battleship armor gets the first Gear 2nd punch from Luffy. He starts to throw a gum gum gatling, but his fists stop short. Then his arms start to turn pink before he unleashes his gum gum cannon. He wasn't attacking before he was pumping his arms, just like he does with his legs later on.
Next thing is that I don't like the idea of Zoro facing off against Shiryu when the Straw Hats and Blackbeard pirates finally clash. Putting those two against each other just because "sword man fight sword man" strikes me as simplistic in a way I just don't enjoy. So who do I think Zoro should fight?
Jesus Burgess. We know he wants a strong devil fruit, having gone after the Mera Mera no mi, and we know he didn't get it. We know they have clashed with the remnants of Whitebeard's crew. I feel like Burgess is going to kill and take the fruit of Diamond Jozu (which would compliment his fighting style PERFECTLY) and is that in his battle against Zoro. Daz Bones even asks Zoro waaaaaaaaaaay back in Alabasta, "what's next? Learning to cut diamond?" Burgess and Zoro are both the vice captain of their crews, been with their captain for the longest, and are arguably the strongest fighters outside of the captains on their respective crews. Besides, I don't think Shiryu is a good enough swordsman to really push Zoro further in his goal. Not like Burgess with a diamond form could.
"But labrador, who would Shiryu fight then?"
Sanji. It would basically be his fight against Absalom all over again, but with much higher stakes. Sanji wants the Clear Clear fruit for his own pervy reasons. Always has. That's half the reason he fought Absalom. The other half was to save Nami. Shiryu is a dishonorable man, and would have no qualms about using Sanji's morals against him. Sanji has fought swordsmen before, and I think it would be wonderful to see him branch out from brawlers and martial artists like himself. Maybe have the end of the fight culminate between Sanji having to either save Nami or grab the fruit before they fall into the sea, and ultimately choosing Nami because he's not completely worthless.
Okay, last but not least, the whole reveal of the Gomu Gomu no mi actually being a mythic zoan fruit, to me, cheapens the entire character. Luffy was always someone who thought outside the box and used his creativity and and determination to push the limits of such a relatively weak fruit. Give him the Gear 5 power up, that's fine. Have him take on the role of Nika. But for all our sakes, just have it be the awakening. Rather than just modifying his body with the fruit, he could affect his surroundings as well, just like the other awakenings we've seen. In that, add in his ability to bend and stretch the laws of physics, the fabric of reality itself. That way, it's a story of overcoming adversity, rather than making him a secret chosen one.

One Piece Animation Thesis: Water Seven
Hello and welcome back for part 4 of the thesis! This week, we will be covering a bit of content, containing not only animators but important changes found within the anime!
The master doc and the previous posts will be found in the reblog!
Water Seven marks an important change anime wise, ranging from episodes 207-263. This could also be argued in regards to story wise as well, but thatβs a conversation for another day, and certainly not here. But yeah Water Seven is hella good. Upon episode 207, the anime ditches the old 4:3 episode format and changes to a new format, using the aspect ratio of 16:9.Β
Because of this new format for the anime, older episodes were later βremasteredβ to fit this format, with the frame resized and cropped to fit the appropriate ratio. Colours were slightly fixed so they appeared less faded and lines were slightly darkened so they werenβt lost within the drawing. However doing this results in aspects of the drawing being lost which can result in some awkward framing and strange close ups, especially on already close up frames of characters.
Due to the new ratio, I believe this is where the anime switches to digital and no longer uses cels. Unfortunately I couldnβt find any concrete evidence however due to the ratio change, as well as colours being altered slightly and lines appearing more clear on the screen prior to the remaster, this leads me to believe that that is the case. If found otherwise, Iβll update here!
Once again, Noboru Kizumi continues to work on the character designs. At this point in the series, he really showcases more of Odaβs traits, focusing more on the lankiness and slim designs Oda has created. Sleek is definitely how I would describe these current designs. Everyone feels quite tall. Odaβs style has also change and evolved over the years, especially in the face where it feels more defined in this period, with sharper features.Β
Here is a showcase of Robinβs design in this arc. Unlike her first appearance during Alabasta, her legs are much longer, and again, very sleek in the features. This is also the arc where I feel it is becoming more apparent that the breast size of the female presenting characters appear larger, and this is something that is continued in both anime and manga. However, note that regardless of your opinions on how this is portrayed in the manga, it is exaggerated more in the anime. And boy, does it get worse as time goes on.
Due to these sleeker designs, it allowed more freedom for the animators to exaggerate and create dynamic poses and movement. A key player in this department is none other than Naoki Tate. Tate is someone who had worked throughout early One Piece as mentioned before. During this era, he also had worked on One Piece Movie 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island, a movie in which we had never seen a style like for the anime at the time.
Itβs a killer movie please go watch it if you havenβt seen it! And if you have seen it go watch it again.Β
Why are you still here? Go watch it and come back to this. Donβt worry I can wait. Naoki Tate had worked on this movie and was greatly inspired by the designs and has stuck to a similar style to this day. These are the early days of him experimenting with this loose, minimalistic style but you can definitely see his influence already. It is still quite rough, but after this arc, he seemed to grasp the style and make it his own.
Masahiro Shimanuki pops up again, with his gatling reminiscent of his Gomu Gomu no Octopus Fireworks cut. His timing is somewhat slow, continuing his use of speedlines to convey motion. His poses are dynamic, making the characters move in a way where itβs seen as interesting rather than just static running.
Katsumi Ishizuka is back at it again, using his strong use of line work to really make that Gomu Gomu no Bullet against Usopp hit hard, figuratively and emotionally.Β
