Reader stealing Goldie to hold in their pocket like this
Tumblr media
If you come closer to them, they'll run away while holding the pocket so Goldie doesn't bounce too much.

Probably the most interesting member of my family - at least that any of us currently alive are aware of - is my great, great uncle Axel. He was an amazing artist. Someone (I forget who) convinced him to apply for Harvard and he was accepted, but he didn’t know what to study. When the person helping him decide asked him if he spoke any languages besides English, he replied “four or five” and wound up getting a linguistics degree. He was an inventor. He had a few patents. At one point he built an atom smasher in his flat, just to prove he could do it. Then he took it apart and brought in bats to study their sonar. On Sundays he went mushroom picking in Central Park, New York, with his buddies, Albert and Nikola. Only one member of my father’s generation managed to track him down and meet him, and she had to go through the secretary to do it. Apparently there’s some sort of tribute gate or sculpture or something to him outside of his old apartment in New York.
Possibly the best thing about him, though, was the signature he put on his patents. I first saw it during our huge family reunion in ‘97. (No, seriously, we made the papers. There are...kind of a lot of us.) My Dad got a copy and made t-shirts for everyone, with each branch of the family being a different colour, so you could tell how everyone was connected.
It’s a little dragon-type creature.
He wrote everything in kind of bubble letters. His first initials - A.E. - made up the wing. He gave the L of Landerholm feet and drew a little head on it. It looks like it’s either yawning or squawking. It’s perched on a little orb and the rest of the name is, well, a name.
It’s really awesome.
The first time I saw it, I immediately thought it looked kinda like Goldie from The Sandman. Not close enough to scare the lawyers, mind, especially since Uncle Axel is long since dead, but there was a bit of a resemblance. If you tilted your head and squinted a bit.
I’ve used this signature for various, family related projects through the years. I’ve converted it to book plates that I put in the journals I make for my cousins. For Christmas this past year, I decided to offer everyone their own personal blends from Adagio. Uncle Axel’s signature seemed like the most appropriate thing for the tin art, so I’ve been colouring it up however the recipients like.
So far only my next youngest cousin and her husband are the only ones to get me their blending requests. (A few other people are, I know, working on it. Everyone else has been silent. We love each other, but we kinda fail at communication.)  My cousin requested ruby red, for reasons that are obvious if you know her. Her husband requested black, yellow, and green. Since yellow and black don’t mix well, I made the background a green-to-black gradient and did the signature yellow.
The result?

...the resemblance to Goldie has not been lessened!

It is very generous of you to offer, Goldie. But I genuinely do not think the dreamers could handle you. Remember, we are not allowed to harm the dreamers in any meaningful way
Opening up the position of overdue books collector nightmare because I cannot send Gault anymore for obvious reasons. I've given The Corinthian a trial period, but he doesn't watch his fingers and now the unpublished Austen novels have bloody fingerprints. New and Better Mervyn said he'd do it, but unfortunately he's potted and therefore stationary. He's also holding the position of my personal mood lifter and I am quite unwilling to divert his attention from his main job

I just wanna say that one of my favorite things in The Sandman was Goldie (so cuteee) and I can't stop thinking about Dream giving reader her own baby gargoyle and she's so excited because it is so beautiful 😭 the moment she holds the gargoyle in her arms for the first time she's like "Oh. My. God. I'm a mother now. This is my child."
Tumblr media
Goldie is my child and my sweet baby
Dream gifting you your own gargoyle after gushing about Goldie for so long and you melt on sight
Dream calmly shows you a rather large egg and says, “For you, my dear.”
You are a little confused, but take the egg. The second the egg is in your hands, warmth radiates from it and cracks soon appear. In seconds, you are staring down at tiny emerald green gargoyle with tiny wings that flap excitedly and massive black eyes (eyes that remind you of Dream). You instantly hold the gargoyle close to your chest with tears in your eyes and say “I love them!”
You sit on the floor gently cooing and playing with them as you try to come up with a name. “Well, like Cain and Abel said it should start with a G. Gwen? George? Oh, god I’m not good at this.”
“Gilly,” Dream suggests.
“Gilly?” Your heart swells. You immediately scoop them up. “Oh my sweet Gilly.”
Gilly squeaks and smiles with little sharp teeth.
From then on, Gilly is by your side the whole time whether sitting on your shoulder, in your arms, flying by your head, or running at your feet.
Also all of this means play dates with Gilly and Goldie as you and Abel gush together
You obviously spoil Gilly
And when you are in the Waking, Gilly clings to Dream and whines wishing for you to come back and when you do return they fly straight towards to smacking into your chest nuzzling their face into you

Okay, here it is my recap of 1x02.
So it starts with Morpheus (that's what I'm calling him...he says to the Fates, 'I am Morpheus...Dream of the Endless...' etc so I'm going to call him that.) returning to the Dreaming and finding everything falling to pieces and in disarray. Lucienne is with him and explains that it began to fall apart with his disappearance. I felt a little bit for Morpheus at that part when after he asks Lucienne what happened to the residents, they (anyone know what pronouns to use for Lucienne?) tell him that some of them fled, thinking that Morpheus had tired of them..
I really, really admire Tom Sturridge's acting because it's impressive how despite not showing so much physical reaction to something emotional, he can still convey that emotion. And in this moment, he's a little surprised, taken aback, stung maybe that his people have such little faith in him, that they think he would abandon them. After all that he's done for them (at least from what I see when we first see the Dreaming in all its glory...like imagine, Morpheus built that for them, the Dreaming is where they go when they sleep, and the dreams [and nightmares] are what he creates, for them).
But he's not back to his full strength just yet. He discovers that without his tools (the ruby, the helm and the sand that was taken from him upon his capture) he's weak and he doesn't have the power to restore his kingdom to what it once was. So he goes in search of the one thing remaining that he created, which might be able to return to him enough power to summon the Fates and ask after his missing tools. He finds that in the Gargoyle in the care of Cain and Able.
It was sad, of course, when Gregory the Gargoyle agreed to sacrifice himself so Morpheus could recover enough power to call the Three-Who-Are-One. But also to note the regret Morpheus felt over that. You could see the pain in his eyes when he started to reabsorb his power, like he didn't really want that, but it was necessary.
Also, Lucienne is my hero. I love them very much.
Tom Sturridge did a fantastic job of showing Morpheus' regret at what he had to do. The Corinthian (an escaped Nightmare and supposedly a villain here in the series) swears that Morpheus doesn’t care about anyone but himself, yet (and I was happy to see this and at this moment started to consider hmm I might possibly like Morpheus) he cares enough to gift Cain and Abel with a new pet: a baby gargoyle named Goldie. A self-less act. I mean, yes Morpheus went to get the snake to offer it to the Fates, but the egg he retrieved was that gift he gave to the brothers.
Then we see the Corinthian trying to enlist Ethel's help in finding and getting a hold of the sigils, Morpheus' tools, no?
Morpheus addresses the Fates (and I enjoyed that interaction, to be honest...his little incline of the head, that 'Thank you, ladies' ...I loved it) The Fates tell Morpheus where he can find his sigils, but in a very cryptic way. Poor man, I mean Endless.. It's like, he asks a question, and one says, "[The ruby] was passed from a mother to a son."
The Fate: *rattles off some cryptic answer* Morpheus: 😤😐😑
And I LOVED how he seemed to forget the one question, one answer. He'd ask one question, get yelled at by the Fates, and then answer with (basically) "Oh shit, right, sorry about that!" 🤣 Excuse me, Dream of the Endless, get your act together, love.
The sand was sold in London. And we're introduced to Johanna Constantine. The helm was traded to a demon (???) for the Amulet of Protection. Ethel ends up using this to get rid of Corinthian for the time being. The ruby, well, we don't know much more than that it was passed from a mother to a son. And that it's somehow related to Johnny (David Thewlis) who's in a hospital/prison according to him.
I'm absolutely fascinated by this series and excited for the next episode!
Also, just the visuals of all this is really amazing. There's a scene, I forgot to mention, when Morpheus parts the waters to travel to the Waking (I suppose that's where he's going to pursue his missing sigils). From Sturridge's subtle hand movements to the way the water flows, it's so impressive. I really enjoy it.
