Sandman Inktober 2023, Day 5 Sigils

“My siblings I stand not in my gallery and I don’t hold your sigils but I need your help”

So for this one I was inspired by this panel of Sandman Overture:

Art wise Sandman Overture is my favorite Sandman volume ( with Sandman Dream Hunters not very far behind) and this was one of my favorite scenes in the comic so it felt appropriate for today’s prompt 🖤

Sandtober 2023 - Day 1: Dream.

It's that time of year for anyone thinking about flexing their creative muscles and wanting to try their hand at a bit of art to throw themselves into Inktober!

This year thanks to this lovely fandoms enthusiam I thought it would be fun to run a Sandman themed inktober month and with help from the extremely talented @seiya-starsniper who has put together the above graphic, we have our prompt list for 2023!

Rules

Like all Inktober events the challenge is to post one piece of art each day throughout October to fit the prompt of that day.

All art mediums are welcome, from pencil sketches, to paints, to digital art etc.

If you fancy using the prompts as writing prompts instead that is also more than welcome.

Please ensure all posts are tagged #sandtober2023 to ensure that they are found.

If you would like to tag me too please do as I will reblog all contributions I come across.

If you can't commit to creating every single day thats absolutely fine! Pick the prompts and the days that you can do and go big for those!

This really is a no pressure, low commitment event if you want it to be, but of course if you want to challenge yourself to posting every day that is also highly encouraged! Do whatever you feel you can do!

There are no rules regarding characters or ships other than that they have to relate to either The Sandman comic or Netflix show.

Obviously standard fandom etiquette applies re no hate, discrimination, racism, homophobia, etc etc.

Also lets adhere to Tumblrs ban on anything too NSFW *sigh*. I'm personally fine with it but if you do wanna do something spicy maybe avoid drawing genitalia or anything that'll ping the filters.

Please do spread the prompts far and wide, cross-post to other social media, discord servers, anywhere you feel will generate interest so long as you tag #Sandtober2023

I decided to take part in the Sandman Inktober event, but I will use the prompts to write a Haiku (mostly in terms of meter) every day. The idea is to add daily so I end up with a 31 (self-)reblog chain for the whole month.

So if this shows up in your feed again, scroll all the way down or check the reblogs 🙂

I would love to draw, but I feel I would put too much pressure on myself because it takes me a lot longer than writing (and I have hang-ups). But I will give you some older art with my first Haiku (two versions existed of this one, but the other was a bit gory/potentially triggering in more than one way, and I mostly painted over it)…

1. Dream

Dream weaves silent tales,

Endless stories, worlds untold,

But at night they speak.

Sandman Inktober 2023, Day 1 Dream.

So this was a very ambitious thing to do to begin inktober month! I don’t think I’ll be able to do pieces like this for the whole month but I was both tempted by a whole set of ink brushes as I was by my lovely friend who inspired me to do my own version of a Hypnos Dream of the Endless @mathomhouse-e ( psss if you click here you’ll see her own wonderful Hypnos Dream!)

I ended up incorporating days 7,8, and 9 in this…rain for his tear, wings for his feather crown, and a daemon black cat instead of a corvid. An ancient god trapped in his kingdom. Every night he takes out his lustrous hair in search of dreams and nightmares💔

Nuala of the Faerie in watercolours for the day 4 prompt "Fae" of Sandtober2023

I won't be doing a piece for every prompt but I will pick out days that I feel particularly inspired by and Nuala is one of my favourite characters in The Sandman comics so of course I had to paint her for day fours prompt!

The inspiration for this is a favourite painting of mine called "Spirit of the Night" by John Grimshaw

Nuala is holding the pendant given to her by Thessaly that Dream blessed with a boon. She is draped in a mantle of night (classic Dreaming fashion obviously!)

I know she doesn't actually have wings in the comic but eh, I think she should have them when she wants them!

Inktober Day 31 - Fire 🔥

When they were in the Waking, Dream always felt unnaturally cold to Hob. However, here in the Dreaming, he felt like he held the fire of a thousand burning suns, with each of his kisses searing through to Hob's core and leaving only love in their wake.

And that's a wrap on another Inktober! I was so delighted to go on this journey again, but this time with a Sandman theme. I always like to use these challenges to get better at drawing new characters, and I'm really happy with how this entire series turned out. Tomorrow I'm going to upload them to my illustration portfolio, and I'll share the link when I'm done. Thanks so much for coming on this journey with me! It's been a blast. (Also, @orionsangel86, have a late submission for Day 28. 😄)
