"Wanna get married?"

"Huh?" Qi Xiaotian was just at his lunch break, he didn't expect a sudden marriage proposal

"Like, as besties," Long Xiaojiao said, waving her hand as if a graph explaining it would pop up. "Remember when I was twelve and my mom said that my grandparents wanted to arrange a marriage for me like they did them?" Right, Xiaotian remembered with a nod. It was lucky, apparently, that Mr. and Mrs. Long had gotten along so well to have fallen in love quickly after their wedding. "And I was terrified of that, especially this year?"

He did. At Xiaojiao's twenty-second birthday, she had spent a few hours sobbing over him, drunk and terrified of the future. He had bit back his own fears to cuddle her, making sure she was safe. Right now, the pieces weren't connecting. "So...?"

"If I get married before they try anything, then that cuts them off from trying anything," Xiaotian felt the pieces connect and lit up. Oh! That was smart. "And you're my best friend and the only person I can imagine being married to for more than five days and not strangling."

Xiaotian bit back a snicker, rolling his eyes. "How romantic," he cooed "I can imagine tolerating marriage with you too." Xiaojiao snickered back. "Do you have a ring?"

Xiaojiao pulled out a small box. "I figured even if you said no, it would be a nice present," she said as she flicked it open, revealing a golden band. A lovely emerald gem had been set in it, surrounded by smaller yellow sapphires.

Xiaotian held out his hand. Xiaojiao wasted no time in sliding the ring on his finger, allowing the ring on her own finger- a yellow sapphire surrounded by small emeralds- to gleam.

"...now we just got to announce it to our families."

"And hope none of them freak out."

"You know they're gonna freak out."

"Hey, at least I have you, Mr. Long-Qi, I'll be happy."
