tour and a treat

hey guys,

hope you’ve been good. i’ve been reading a lot of joan didion and thinking about making my own quilt - oh, and rehearsing the upcoming north american leg of the melodrama world tour, NBD. i really love this show - it’s so different for me. we’ve never played arenas before, and this is by far my biggest show in each city we’re visiting, which is awesome. pretty cool to think about us being in tiny clubs and theatres for pure heroine, and now i have a little razor scooter to get me around the venue lol! i hope you love the show too. it’s gonna be super fun to have run the jewels and tove and mitski running around with us too- make sure you check out their sets. 

wanted to give you a fun taste of tour with this awesome remix el-p of run the jewels has done for SUPERCUT. i love it. so much. my little nerd heart is full.

just wanted u to have it as a treat via the mailing club first. do what you want with it. play it loud in gridlocked traffic and piss off all the old people.

Sasha Banks and "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt reportedly suffered injuries at last night's WWE Hell In a Cell pay-per-view.

There's no word yet on injury details but John Pollock of POST Wrestling reports that Banks and Wyatt are not medically cleared to compete for tonight's RAW. There was no timeline provided for their ring returns, and no indication that either injury is serious.

Banks lost to RAW Women's Champion Becky Lynch in the opening match of last night's HIAC pay-per-view from the Golden1 Center in Sacramento, California. Wyatt faced WWE Universal Champion Seth Rollins in the main event, which ended by referee stoppage in controversial fashion. Both matches took place inside the Hell In a Cell structure.

Chapter 22 _ Bailamos o que morrita?

“I pulled some strings and got us last minute reservations at Rio City Cafe for later tonight, babe. We’ll leave your place at 5:30 to make it by 6, watch the New Years fireworks on the balcony near the heaters and then at 9 after the fireworks we’ll be called to the table for dinner. Then before midnight I wanna take you to Tower Bridge for a surprise.” Valentina told Juliana over the phone. It was New Years Eve and while Juliana worked Valentina had spent the previous weeks preparing a song for Juliana and she wanted to sing it tonight.

“Okay, well since you already have it all figured out I’ll eat a bit when I get home and get ready for when you come pick me up babe. I love you thank you.” Juliana said sighing in relief at Valentina had everything set up.

Val smiled and giggled, “Wait, you’re not gonna question me about the surprise?”

“Nope. I know you’re not gonna tell me so why bother. I’m sure I’ll love it. I’ve loved all your surprises thus far, there’s no reason why I shouldn’t trust you with this one.” Juliana said calmly.

“I love you Juliana Valdes.” Valentina said smiling at Juliana’s words and calm voice.

Juliana smiled on the other end. “& I love you Valentina Carvajal.”

When the evening rolled around Juliana was ready and waiting for her girlfriend to come pick her up for their first New Years together. This was all new to her but she knew she was lucky to have such a romantic partner as Valentina. She never thought she’d find love in California nor that that love would come in the form of a beautiful blue eyed Latina.

As soon as she heard Valentina’s usual knock she grabbed her coat and her wallet walking over to the door.

“Amor, why don’t you just use your keys? I gave them to you for a reason ba—” When Juliana looked up it was not Valentina at the front door. “Eva what are you doing here?”

“Just happened to be in town and wanted to see where my little cuñadita lived.” Eva said with a cunning smile and a tone that told Juliana she was not here on good terms as usual.

“Que queieres Eva. Your sister is about to pick me up so I don’t have time for whatever little game you have planned for today. So whatever it is, spit it out and go. I’m done putting up with you, I love your sister and nothing is gonna change that so just get over yourself and get used to it because I’m not going anywhere.” Juliana said closing the door behind her.

Eva smirked. “So what you’re not gonna let me in?”

“No, Eva, I’m not. So either say what you’re here to say or just leave please. I don’t have time for this.” Juliana said standing with her arms crossed defensively as she leaned against her front door.

Eva just shrugged her shoulders and began to speak. “Whatever, I just came to warn you to be careful. My sister might say she loves you but she has someone else on the side. Some girl named Lauren, she’s always at the house and they’re very touchy feely. Sort of like you when you first started coming around. I think she’s bored of you and found a new play date. Be ready to get replaced.” She smiled evilly at Juliana, looking for a reaction. When she saw the hurt flash through Juliana’s eyes she knew her job was done and walked away.

“I don’t believe you.” Juliana called out.

“You don’t have to. I know what I saw and your reaction is enough for me to know you had no idea. Bye, cuñadita.” Eva said not bothering to turn around and look at Juliana while waving her goodbye with a satisfied smirk on her face.

Valentina arrived shortly after to find Juliana opening her door. When she saw Juliana she ran to her after seeing Eva’s car.

“Juls! You okay? I just saw Eva leaving. What did she do?” Valentina said stopping Juliana from closing the door behind her.

“She told me about some Lauren. I don’t want to believe her because I trust you but why would she come all this way just to torture me like that…” Juliana said whispering the end mostly to herself, looking anywhere but Valentina while grabbing a seat at the dining table.

Valentina ran a hand through her hair. “What exactly did Evangelina say to you?”

“She said that ‘Lauren’ is always at your house and that the two of you are very touchy feely sort of how you and I were at the beginning and I should prepare to be replaced soon. Who’s Lauren, Valentina?” Juliana said finally looking up at the girl in front of her.

“Okay first of all Juliana there is nothing going on between Lauren and I. Second, I wouldn’t dare be ‘touchy feely’ with anyone who is not the woman I love and have in front of me right now. Lauren is friend from school, she’s starting a new photography project and I’ve been helping her plan it out these past 2 weeks but it’s nothing but school related I promise. Plus I’ve spent the majority of these two weeks with you so I don’t see why you would doubt me. I’ve done nothing to make you think I’d ever cheat on you. I love you Juliana. With all of my heart. Evangelina has no right to come and say any of that. I’m gonna end this with her once and for all. You have to know that I love you and only you. I would never do anything to hurt you or what we have, Juliana. Can you please look me in the eyes and tell me that you believe me. Please.” Valentina said kneeling in front of where Juliana was seated.

Juliana looked at Valentina’s eye and saw pure sincerity and grabbed her face tenderly with both hands. “I’m sorry for even allowing her words to affect me. You’ve done nothing but love me from day one and I have no right to mistrust you. I’m sorry Valentina. Your sister always finds a way to get to me. I love you and I don’t want to lose you. I know how Eva is, I already know she’s out to break us up and I fell right into that. I’m sorry. I do believe you Valentina.”

Valentina reached up to kiss Juliana who leaned down to meet her halfway.

They leaned their foreheads against each other with their eyes closed. “I love you, please don’t ever doubt that. I will scream it to the entire world if I need to. You are my world Juliana. I would give up anything and everything to prove to you how much I truly love you.”

Juliana caressed Valentina’s cheek speaking quietly. “You know I’d never ask you to give up anything for me. I just want us to be honest like we’ve been doing up until now. I truly don’t like your sister but she is your sister and that’s why I put up with her but I’m telling you now, if she comes back here or tries something like that again, I am going off. I’ve had enough of her.”

“I’ll put an end to this. I am so sick and tired of her thinking she can control my life like I’m not a living breathing soul. I love you and I won’t allow anyone to come between us. I promise you that.” Valentina said grabbing Juliana’s right hand and linking their pinkies together to seal her promise. “Now can we please get going baby? I don’t want our plans to be ruined by my sister, there’s still so much I have planned for tonight and I need you to shine that bright smile for me.”

Juliana gave Valentina a smile as she stood up offering the girl on the floor, a hand to stand up. “Come on señorita Carvajal, the night is young and I am all yours.”

“That’s my girl.” Valentina said as they walked towards the door.

Once in Valentina’s white BMW Z4 the girls headed towards Downtown Sacramento and decided to park at a garage near the Golden1 Center and walk to Old Sacramento from there as to not get stuck in traffic on the way out. They walked hand in hand from the garage to the tunnel connecting downtown to Old Sac. The tunnel was lit with colorful LED lights and there were a few musicians taking turns playing music as people walked by through the tunnel.

“I love coming here as the night begins to fall, it’s my favorite. My mom used to bring me here to see the lights. That was before they made the DOCO shopping area, it used to be a downtown plaza and we would always grab a lemonade from the food court before heading into Old Sac and walking around the little town ending our nights with an ice cream cone. This place holds a special place in my heart and I was really sad when they tore the plaza down because it was like tearing that memory down but I love the new design and what they did with the place.” Valentina said as they walked towards the restaurant where they would watch the fireworks together.

“I love hearing about your mom. She seemed like a wonderful person. What is your favorite memory from your time together?” Juliana smiled said rubbing her thumb across Valentina’s hand.

“When I was little she used to always quote her favorite author and say, ‘doorways offer passage but windows offer vision’ and I never understood it when she was around. I think I was too little to understand but now that I’m older and have more knowledge of the world I find those words to be so true. She taught me to look for the beauty in all the little things and to appreciate everything. She was always teaching me to reach for higher and to truly dream. She taught me that there is no limit to what I can accomplish. I always strive to have a vision, no matter how many doors close I always have a plan to get through them. There is always another way, a window that I can open.” Valentina said looking up at the sky at the thought of her mother.

Juliana made the two of them stop before reaching the restaurant to look at Valentina and truly look at her. “That’s beautiful, Val. I love that. I admire you so much and you’re the strongest person I know. You face life with such love and positivity and I truly love that about you. You’re always creating beauty around you, be it art or energy, it’s incredible. You’re incredible. I love you. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your life.”

Valentina simply smiled. She reached in to hug Juliana tightly. “If anything you make it easier for me to love life so thank you. Thank you for coming into my life and changing it for the better. I love you and I am so proud to call such a talented and beautiful girl, my soulmate. You are my window in love and life.”

Juliana smiled as she leaned in to give Valentina a kiss. They were aware of the people around them but at this point they did not care, nothing the outside world could say or do could stop the love they continued to nourish and grow in each other.

Once inside the restaurant the girls were redirected towards the balcony overlooking the river. They chose their seats and got started on some drinks. They had a beautiful evening holding each other as they watched the fireworks go off. When the show ended they were called back indoors to a table where they shared a lovely meal and talked about their plans and aspirations for the upcoming year.

Around 11pm the two left the restaurant as Valentina had planned and they walked over to Tower Bridge. Juliana had been so caught up with their date that she had forgotten all about the surprise. She was completely caught off guard when the yellow bridge began to lift as she and Valentina made it to the middle.

“What’s going on Val! Oh my god, what did you do!” Juliana said coving her face with her hands and then she turned around to look at Valentina who had a single red rose in her hand and an entire mariachi band behind her.

“Surprise?” Valentina said shrugging her shoulders with a smile. “I prepared you a little something and I wanted to make it special and cheesy.”

“Valentina Carvajal, I love you but this is crazy and what are those guys doing here?” Juliana said pointing at the band behind her girlfriend.

Valentina smiled at Juliana and reached out to hand over the rose while turning around to tell the band, “arranquense muchachos.”

The next thing Juliana knew, she was being serenaded by the love of her life with a song written just for her.

Valentina did not break eye contact for a single second as she sang every word passionately.

When Valentina finished she was instantly pulled into a hug and a passionate kiss by Juliana. In the middle of their embrace the midnight fireworks went off indicating it was the beginning of a new year. A year they would face together unconditionally.

The band began to play music as Valentina wrapped her arms around Juliana from behind as they looked up at the fireworks display. As soon as “La Mano De Dios” began Juliana turned around in Valentina’s arms and said with a bright smile, “bailamos o que morrita?”

Valentina smiled at Juliana’s excitement and nodded her head in agreement. They spent the rest of the hour slow dancing on the elevated bridge ignoring the world around them, for tonight it was only them.

I thought I was the only one who couldn’t go back to the place I saw harry!! I went to Sacramento a week ago with my friend and I told her not to take my anywhere near the golden1 center 😩 and my friends want to see Shawn Mendes next year at the golden1 center but I suggested going to Oakland bc I don’t think I can handle the emotions I would feel😭

SUSTAINABILITY PRACTISE OF A SPORTS VENUE

For this week’s entry, I will be looking at the sustainability of the Sacramento Kings NBA home court, Golden 1 Center.

In October 2016, the Kings lost their opening night NBA game, but they didn’t lose the night overall. This match was the first time that the team had played in their brand new $557m Golden 1 Center (Campelli, 2018).

Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner praised the stadium as being the “gold standard” and that fellow NBA teams should follow. The Golden 1 Center was the first LEED Platinum certified indoor sports venue in the world (Campelli, 2018).

For the starting months of the NBA season, the weather can become uncomfortably hot, reaching over 30C, to help the fans in attendance, AECOM installed a displaced ventilation system, allowing them to push air from the bottom of the venue so it rises up to the nosebleed sections, allowing fans to feel comfortable no matter where they are sitting.  

The Kings have been able to deliver a world class stadium, and since the venue opened its doors till mid 2018, 1.6 million people had attended the venue, “less then 1% raised concerns about comfort and climate” said Alastair Macgregor, AECOM Vice-President (Campelli, 2018).

The Golden 1 Center is the first arena in the world to be 100% solar powered & achieve LEED Platinum designation. The stadium is using 100% clean energy, using sun power for clean and efficient energy (Golden 1 Center).

“We’re proud Golden 1 Center has become a model of sustainability for sports teams, fans and businesses around the world,” said Kings Chairman and Owner Vivek Ranadivé. “Our goal has always been to use our basketball team as a platform for good, drive meaningful change, demonstrate that awareness and innovation go hand in hand, and set an example to be thoughtful and intelligent about how we use our resources.”

The Kings have hit the nail right on the head in the development of this stadium, they have been able to increase the comfort for the people attending the event and make sure that their time inside the venue is a positive one and not an uncomfortable one.

They are starting the blue print of how a venue should develop their stadium, especially towards other indoor venues.

i wanna show you something super cool - melodrama, live at electric lady. i've never done a stripped-back session before; they never made sense with the pure heroine stuff, which was obviously born totally electronic. a lot of melodrama came from real instruments, and it was super fun digging into that for these six sessions. everything from HOMEMADE DYNAMITE, done with a girl gang and a linn drum; SOBER, all culty and minor-chordy with a circle of organs and synths around me, and french horns !!! 😍 ; or WRITER IN THE DARK with jack sitting next to me at the exact piano where i first plinked out that hook. this studio means so much to me - this is legit the very room where we made most of the album, drank a million smoothies, watched the snow fall through the windows, and shared all my secrets. seemed important to go back to the exact spot and channel the heart flows again. i hope you love these videos like i loved making them.
