Amazing photo of a momma mega-bat flying with her pup clinging to her chest.

This giant golden-crowned flying fox, (a.k.a. golden-capped fruit bat) is a species of mega-bat endemic to the Philippines. These endangered bats' diet consists purely of fruit, and they cause no harm to humans or other animals. They can grow to have a wingspan of almost 6 feet and weigh around 3 pounds.

She tried to charge me $10 for this, can you believe that nonsense? I tipped her enough to feel less guilty about how much I was paying her, but she was like "that's how much people are charging for this kind of art on dA" and I was like "no you are underselling yourself by at least thirty bucks here, minimum."

Hopefully she's charging reasonable rates for her commissions because GODDAMN that's gorgeous.

Anyway, Parchy here is a giant golden-crowned flying fox, a species of megabat native to the Philippines, where I was born, and I came up with her as an alternative to my then existing fursonas when I was thinking "if I was limited to species native to where I was born for my fursona, what would I pick?"

The giant golden-crowned flying fox is the largest species of bat in the world. Like other flying foxes, it is a fruit bat. The species is endangered due to poaching - largely done by fruit farmers trying to protect their crops - and largely cohabitates with other species of bats to bolster flock sizes.

The giant golden-crowned flying fox is enormous for a bat, weighing about 2 1/2 pounds, with an average 5'-5 1/2' (1.5-1.7m) wingspan.

The giant golden-crowned flying fox also known as the golden-capped fruit bat is a species of megabat which is native and endemic exclusively to the islands of the Philippines. They tend to inhabit old growth rainforest and forested river ways, they are a primarily nocturnal species which spends its days resting and socializing in colonies up to several thousand strong, which often includes members of other bat species such as the large flying fox. Come sunset these megabats take flight in search of food such as leaves, tree sap, nectar, and fruit especially figs. Unlike other bats which navigate using echolocation, golden capped fruit bats have large well developed eyes with excellent dark vision. These megabats are preyed upon by reticulated pythons, crocodiles, and birds of prey such as the Philippine Eagle. Reaching upwards of 2ft (60cms) in length, 3.5lbs (1.6kg) in weight, with a 5.6ft (1.7m) wingspan, the giant golden-crowned flying fox is one of if not the largest bat on earth. It gets its common name from it the coloration of its fur which is yellow from the top of the head down to the shoulders. The sides of its face, brows, and throat are black, while the sides of its neck and upper back are maroon; this maroon fur transitions into brownish black, which then grades into reddish brown down the back. The belly and hindlimbs are generally brownish-black, and its wings are pale brown. They are a polygynous species which breeds twice a year, females generally give birth in April-June to a single offspring. Under ideal conditions a giant golden-crowned flying fox will reach sexual maturity at 2 years of age and may live up to 30.

I am a polymorphic god specifically, meaning my polymorphism and godhood are linked. In fact, I am a god of polymorphism. As for being a vampire, my vampirism feels physical and as though it has very much carried over into this body. These things are part of my base identity as nonhuman, and so is being canine therian. As you can probably guess, my alterhumanity is highly complicated and often confusing, as I'll feel like, say, a bearded vulture one moment and a cheetah the next. It can feel unstable and chaotic. Spix's disc winged bat (Thyroptera tricolor) is a native of the Americas, ranging from Mexico to Brazil. It gets its name from the disks on its thumbs and hind feet.

I wrote a little thing. It's inspired by a donut, and its main purpose is to be cute and fun. (There will be a little angst.) Summary: There's a pastry chef, and cake names that make a customer blush. Also on AO3.

Something Sweet, Chapter 1/11.

PAGE 1-2

Exterior: a picturesque café in the morning sun. From bird’s eye view, if we imagine the bird sitting in one of the trees on the street outside. A sign on the door: "We're closed, welcome at 9 AM!" There’s a small rainbow flag in the corner of the sign.

We sweep in through the window of the closed front door. Inside, the counter has a large display case with a glass front; there are several tables of different sizes and shapes, and between them cheerful palm trees and other large plants; art of different shapes and sizes on the walls.

We land in the kitchen behind the counter, closing in on a workbench. A pair of hands are working over several frames. Delicious-looking cookies, pastries, and cakes are arranged on trays; trays are moved one after the other into the display case. In the last few frames we pan out again and see the pastry chef as he goes about his job.

He's wearing a crisp, white uniform with a striped apron, and a neat cap over dark hair neither short nor long. He's maybe late 30s, and we get the impression that he’s mild-mannered, kind; the gentle smile on his face as he does these routine jobs says this is one of his (many) favourite parts of the day. Last frames: a tray is set in its place, and he reaches for a brush and a card.

The pastry chef takes a folded card, writes on it with a fine, thin brush, then places it in front of one of the trays.

Pan out, then in, to see the trays and their signs in the display case.

An array of elaborate little chocolate biscuits promise: “I Tempt Only With All I Am” A dream in pink and red tells you: "When I'm Berry I'm Better" A tray of golden cookies with the distinctive seed shape nudged into the top: “Almond’s There” A cake covered in white chocolate: “Yes! Yes” And a dozen elaborate fruit pastries proudly bear the name “Papa’s Peachy Passion Perfection”

The sign on the door is turned to “Welcome!” [rainbow flag on this side as well] and the bell above the door jingles. Regular customers stream in, a steady but patient flood. [Bell rings again in corners of frames.] Most of the customers have a chat with the baker, and no regulars begrudge that nor try to stress things along. Not batting an eye, they order their “Pomme At My Touch,” “Nibble,” and the distinctly shaped "Peckish.” Unhurried and serene, the baker serves and wraps his temptations.

Late morning; there’s a lull. Customers at some of the tables but no one in line. The baker rearranges cakes and signs after the morning’s many sales.

The bell above the door jingles.

A new customer comes in. Clearly his first visit. He's seeing a new place; he’s curious, unfamiliar, but there is maybe a note of hesitation that goes a little beyond unfamiliarity. He takes very short steps. The door closes quietly behind him and his jaws clench nervously. He sees a couple at a table, giggling over a shared plate of cookies, and his tread falters slightly. But most of all, his gaze is drawn again and again to the restocked trays of delicacies in the display. Speech bubble in lower corner: “Welcome.” ^ ^

The customer looks up to the baker’s smile. Snags there for a moment – it is a smile to snag on – but he gathers himself and reciprocates the polite bow. “My thanks! I’m …” His attention is drawn back to the pastries, and the baker smiles. (He’s always a little (justifiably) smug at this point.) “Please, I insist you see everything before you choose.” He goes back to his chores, and the customer looks back to what’s on offer.

The customer’s arrested attention roams from macaroons to biscuits, buns to amuses-bouches; a perfectly glazed curve there, a tantalising graze of bright sprinkles here. He is starry-eyed at all the loveliness – and then he comes to focus on the signs before the pastries and O.O (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)⁄

The customer reads all the signs, and, oh, does he blush. He glances up at the baker, who is half turned away, busy with pans and tools, and his shaken gaze possibly rests there a little too long: the baker, with the perfect radar of a life in the service business, turns back, always gently smiling. “Would you like to know more about any of the ingredients? Any allergies to consider?”

“I – I’m allergic to cherries,” the customer says, only to blush even more. But the baker’s smile never falters: he only inclines his head and answers, indicating a pink chou: “Alas, then I cannot offer you ‘Oh! Your Blossom.’ But everything that comes in contact with allergens is cleaned thoroughly. You should feel quite safe with everything else.” The customer nods, a bit weak at this point.

Time is freely given. The baker serves another regular while the customer calms down. In the end, the customer chooses two cookies: “Gingerly,” and "I Fit In Your Hand." His eyes do not leave the baker’s skilful hands as they wrap his purchase. “I do hope they will please.” The customer stammers his thanks. “If they do, please come again.”

Two days later, same time. The bell above the door jingles; a smile in the corner of a frame. “Welcome back.”

Chapter 2

She’s an Acerodon jubatus!! A Giant golden-crowned flying fox and also known as the golden-capped fruit bat, species of megabat endemic from the Philippines!!🇵🇭
