Pairing: au!Anakin Skywalker x you!reader.

Summary: Anakin decides to pursue things outside of your relationship, breaking your heart in the process.

You ran into the coffee shop, in a hurry, which is a normal state for you and your continuous tardiness. “Fuck.” You muttered under your breath as you forced the door open with unnecessary strength. 

Anakin must’ve been waiting for half an hour now. 

On your tippy toes, you scanned the room, looking for the golden curls to stand out from a booth. 

Bingo. 

Trying to hide your excitement, you rushed to the table where your -relatively- new thing was waiting for you. You cursed your bag for making so much noise and told yourself off for packing so much shit. Maybe there was no need to bring all the stuff with you, but you couldn’t help yourself in your excitement to show Anakin all of the activities you had planned for you two and the remaining part of the summer. 

“Hey.” You whispered loud enough for him to listen to you, but your shortness of breath didn’t go unnoticed by him. He gave you a toothless smile as you sat down in front of him. “I’m sorry I’m late, I was at work and my manager-” You didn’t finish the sentence, instead, your face let him know everything he needed.

“Don’t sweat. I haven’t waited long. Five minutes to be exact.” He checked his phone carelessly. 

Oh. 

“Training ran long?” You hoped.

“Oh, no, just ran a little late.” He shrugged his shoulders. Like it was of no importance. 

At least you felt ashamed for being late. He didn’t seem to carry the same guilt.

Sometimes Anakin did this thing that stung your heart a little. His number one priority had always been him. And when you agreed to try things with him, you knew that was implied in the contract. Part of you had been hoping that you were going to be the reason that changed. 

So far, you had failed in your mission. 

“Oh, right.” You tried to fake a smile. 

“And how’s life outside of work, baby?” 

And just like that, your heart felt a little lighter and spark returned to your face. Especially when he reached out to hold your hand and play with your fingers. Especially when he used that nickname that you loved and you hadn’t heard in a while from his lips.

“It’s fine. My summer classes are always boring.” You rolled your eyes, chuckling at the end because he knew how much you hated to take extra courses. 

“I told you to give yourself some time off in the summer.” He raised his eyebrow.

“I know, I know…” You huffed. “Actually, I’ve been working on that.” You smiled, turning to your bag and taking some of the things you packed. 

Tickets for one of your favorite movies, that he insisted he wanted to watch with you. It made you smile so hard when he had proposed that plan, given that he was aware how much that franchise meant to you. 

You also took out some coins for the local fair, the one you two had walked by and promised to do that as your next date. 

The brand new control for your gaming console you had just bought to join him in video games because he said he wanted to share that without you. He seemed pretty excited to do that as an activity together and he even listed all of the games you might like. 

And right when you were about to take the keys of your summer house out, to hint him that you were ready to take the next step in your relationship, he stopped you. 

Anything intimate always made you nervous, even when you two were in the middle of it. It was a very vulnerable space for you and Anakin was your first in many things. It was normal for you to still be adapting to it. 

But you wanted to try. For you.

For him.

As a more experienced person than you, Anakin had needs. Needs that you sometimes failed to meet. That even though he was patient, you could feel how your lack of confidence sometimes bugged him. Not in an explicit manner, just… the occasional huff when he tried something experimental in bed or when you started to psych yourself out of the make out session. 

Any other person would have already left, but Anakin was your friend first and he was well aware of your uptight personality way before the two of you agreed to be friends with benefits. He knew what he was getting into and he was actually glad to help you experiment with that part of yourself you normally hid.

So your demonstration of being an organized and planning psycho was nothing new to him.

“Hey, hey…” He slowed you down, barely gazing the things on the table and fixing his eyes on yours. “Before you get started, I wanted to talk to you.”

His serious tone alerted you. But you weren’t surprised. Something inside of you had been alerting you all weekend. You thought it was your well-known anxiety. However, this felt unusual. Like his habitual ghosting and lack of response for the past few days meant different things this time.

“Sure.” You took a deep breath, trying to make it not so obvious. “Go ahead.” You nodded with a little smile trying to appear serene. 

“So, sorry for not replying to your texts this weekend. I was out in nature, thinking and connecting, you know?” He tilted his head, his eyes looking for some compassion out of you.

“Yeah, yeah, of course.” You rushed the words when the silence dipped between you two, part of it your fault because you were too worried with your sinking heart. 

You could understand a little impromptu retreat, you only wished it wasn’t right after you did some pretty intimate stuff back at your house. That last day you two crossed more boundaries than ever before. And even though you highly enjoyed it, his absence after that had you feeling nauseous, making you overthink and regret your decision of not giving him your virginity right in that opportunity. Maybe he would have shown more interest if you would have-

“So…Uhm… I think we should stop hanging out.” 

Your heart was down by your feet when he pronounced those words. You tried with all your soul to control your trembling hands that lied in between his palms so he didn’t notice how he was ripping you apart. Your irregular breath threatened to put you on blast but you managed to keep it on the low. 

“It’s not about you, seriously. I love hanging out with you and spending time with you, among other stuff.” He chuckled lightly, but instead of following his action, you released the breath you were holding. “But I’ve been talking to this girl and I just want to make sure that everything is working out with her. Emotionally.”

The sting in your eyes only grew bigger as you realized how embarrassing and heart shattering this moment was for you. Your cheeks felt hot and tight, something you tried hard to disguise with a breezy exterior. 

Like a flash, you remembered the day both of you talked about the rules of your agreement. You kicked yourself mentally when you reminisced of the moment where both of you agreed to let the other one know if they wanted to pursue something with someone else. You had said yes, in the expectation that his constant checking in on you and daily talks was enough proof of interest. Meaning that he would not be looking outside of your “situationship” .

And you agreed, because that was your case. You were interested enough. 

“You let me know if you want to see another guy, okay?”

You could almost laugh at such stupid idea. Didn’t he know?

“I think it’s better if we stop talking, so I can figure out things with her.” He scrunched his nose, like he was running out of words.

But how many words do you actually need to let someone know you don’t want them? He didn’t need much more. You’ve gotten the message. 

“It’s nothing definitive, but yeah… Let me know if you have any questions.” He gave you a side smile, still fidgeting with your frozen-in-place fingers. 

That took you out of the slow motion trance you were in. 

“Y-yeah, okay.” You took your hands out of his quickly, blinking quickly into realization. You started to rush everything back in your purse, screaming the word “Stupid!” over and over again in your head while you carried on with a calm expression. “Do not worry about me. No questions on my part. Thanks for letting me know.”

I guess.

“Totally agree with not talking anymore.” You finally stopped for a second after pushing all of the items on your tote bag. He seemed to be analyzing your expression in search of any sign of real approval, because your shy and cold body language wasn’t reassuring him. So you put on your bravest face and forced a smile. “I hope everything turns out great with her.” 

Speaking those words felt like hot iron was passing through your throat. 

He gave you an honest smile and got up, taking his jacket with him. “Thank you. And thanks for understanding.”

You stayed frozen in place, your purse on your lap with your hands clutching it so hard you could feel your nails through the fabric. You limited yourself to nodding quietly and letting the side of your mouth curve slightly up. 

“I’m sorry I can’t stay-” He began explaining his sudden escape. 

“Don’t be. Don’t worry about me. ” You dismissed. “I’ll just stay and have lunch.” You took the menu and fixed your gaze on the listed items, anything that wouldn’t be his eyes. 

He excused himself off the table politely, leaving you all alone and speechless. You glued your eyes to his back until he exited through the door, begging silently that he would turn around and say something else. Something that would pull you back into his life.

It seemed like that wasn’t his plan.

“I know I shouldn’t look for you for sexual stuff, but can I contact you for friend stuff?”

The text arrived that Saturday at 1am, 5 days later, erasing any progress you had done. 

The day of his usual drunken nights. 

Right around the time he used to get bored and there wasn't anything left to smoke. 

Exactly at the time he would always contact you. 

And you?

You were still at the restaurant. Unable to move.

Every day since that day. 

Right where he left you.

Twelve Days of Christmas: Day Five

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me: FIVE GOLDEN RINGS (sung very dramatically)

Scott was busy decorating his Christmas tree, humming to himself as he worked. He'd barely finished humming the line before his phone buzzed on the table. He picked it up on the first ring.

“Hello?”

“Hey, bro. Is this Scott?”

Scott’s heart skipped a beat. “Yeah… Is this who I think it is?” he asked, his voice tinged with anticipation.

“If you’re thinking Brody Gold, then you’re spot on.” The voice on the other end had a confident, almost playful tone. “I just wanted to congratulate you, bro. You’re one of the five lucky winners of our Golden Army sweepstakes!”

Scott nearly dropped his phone. His mind raced back to the contest he’d entered after the last game he attended. The details had been vague—no one knew exactly what the prize would be—but the allure of anything related to the Golden Army was impossible to resist. Maybe it was a jersey, or a VIP ticket to meet the team? The possibilities made his fanboy heart pound with excitement.

“Oh, shi- crap! Thanks so much! So… uh… what did I win? The contest never said.”

Brody chuckled. “I’m sending you a video right now, bro. It’ll explain everything you need to know. I’ve got four more winners to call, so watch it and hit me back when you’re done, alright?”

“Of course! Thanks again! I’ll call you as soon as I’m finished.”

“Good boy,” Brody replied smoothly before hanging up.

Scott blinked at his phone, a little puzzled. Good boy? The condescending comment lingered in his mind for a moment, but a notification popped up almost immediately—Brody’s promised video. The excitement surged back, and he tapped it without hesitation.

The screen flickered to life, but instead of a promotional video or an excited announcement, a mesmerizing black-and-gold spiral filled the display. Scott’s smile faltered. His eyes locked onto the spiral, unable to look away, as golden words began to flash on the screen in hypnotic pulses.

BLANK. OBEDIENT. EMPTY. MINDLESS.

Scott’s thoughts slipped away as if a plug had been pulled from his mind. His body slumped in his chair, his jaw slackening. The spiral consumed his focus, and he didn’t notice when a black, viscous substance began oozing from the edges of his phone. It crept onto his hand, cool and smooth, before spreading rapidly up his arm.

The words on the screen shifted:

DRONE. BLANK. OBEY THE GOLD. SERVE US.

The goo flowed like liquid shadow, engulfing his torso, dissolving his clothes in its path. Scott didn’t flinch; his mind had no room for panic. It was being stripped of humanity, thought by thought, memory by memory.

The rubber solidified into a sleek, glossy black polo shirt, perfectly fitted to his frame, leaving his arms exposed. The substance continued down his legs, forming tight, shiny black pants and polished boots. It crept upward, encasing his neck and jaw in a mask that gleamed under the light. His transformation was almost complete.

More words flashed on the screen:

NO NAME. ONLY A NUMBER. PDU-207. SCOTT ERASED.

A gold number, 207, etched itself across his chest in bold, gleaming digits. The spiral faded, but the programming remained. Scott—no, 207—rose from his chair, standing at attention. His blank gaze stared straight ahead as his hand moved with mechanical precision, redialing the last number.

Brody answered after the first ring, his voice firm and commanding. “Designation, drone.”

“It is PDU-207,” the drone replied in a monotone voice. “It obeys and serves the gold without question or hesitation.”

Brody’s voice softened, tinged with satisfaction. “Excellent, 207. A transport will arrive shortly to bring you to our facility. You will comply.”

“Drone acknowledges the order and obeys.”

“Good. When you arrive, report directly to my office. We’ll begin your 'advanced training'.”

Brody ended the call with a smirk. He leaned back in his chair, tapping his pen thoughtfully against his desk.

“One down,” he mused, “four more drones to go.”

I am conflicted about something with Star Wars. I have been thinking about the Jedi, Anakin, and what could have been done different and what would have happened if the Jedi Council had just said no to training Anakin.

I feel a lot of Anakin's issues stem from being separated from his mother when he was 9. Luke and Leia handled the lose of their loved ones better because they lost theirs when they were 19. Whereas Anakin spent a decade worrying about his mother because as far as he knew she was a slave until Watto told him what became of her.

I feel if the Jedi had freed her and give Anakin a note from her that explained she was free his training about have gone better and he would have been able to handle things better. And before it is brought up, yes she died when she was free, but my focus is on Anakin and him spending 10 years worrying about her.

But the Jedi do not help her and even stranger she has made no attempt to contact Anakin at the Jedi Temple. I guess she could have, I don't know if the Jedi would allow them to talk. Based on a line from Anakin, he says he's not allowed to be with the people he loves, I assume the Jedi would not.

So we have the story as told and we know what happens there.

If the Jedi Council refuses Anakin's training and he goes back to Tatooine or Obi-Wan leaves and trains Anakin he isn't around Palpatine and all that so he might do better but the Jedi Order still gets taken out.

I did a rewatch of the Prequels over the last few days and found Anakin really was not key to any part of Palpatine's plan. Remove Anakin and Mace and the other masters would not know Palpatine is a Sith Lord when they confront him. Although that situation probably wouldn't happen like that because I believe Palpatine revealed where General Grievous was to get Obi-Wan out of the picture and it is Palpatine that tells Anakin in the opera.

With all this in mind I have come to the conclusion that the Jedi were handed the Golden Ticket (Anakin) to destroy the Sith and instead of cashing it in to win they punched their own ticket out of existence by not addressing the situation with his mother.

The Jedi need Anakin to win, I watched a behind the scenes video where Lucas says the prophecy is real, Anakin is the chosen one, and he does fulfill the prophecy in Return of the Jedi.

And given a theme of Star Wars is nature, balance, and I see that the Jedi Order had reacted it's evolutionary dead end because the Jedi could not adapt to survive which is do something outside their rules and no allowing Anakin's training was not that in of itself. They needed to do more to help the child.

With Lucas confirming the prophecy is real and all that I am left to conclude that Anakin would have destroyed the Sith some other way.

I guess the lesson with the Jedi Order is that institutional stagnation will lead to destruction. The Jedi and Sith are cycles of life, both predators, and the Sith had evolved while the Jedi did not. Nature and the Force are unforgiving I guess.

So I guess in the grand scheme of things, what I am trying to say, is the Jedi Order had reached it's end and was mean to shuffle off.

The thing is, I don't get these feelings when I watch the movies. And I have to admit, I'm a bit in trouble here, because I am not sure if I can put my finger on what evokes these feelings in you. I'm all virtual ears if you are OK with telling me!

To me, it was always clear that Anakin himself tells us the cause of his issues: "I don't want things to change." And as the Jedi Masters point it out: he is afraid to lose his mother. Yoda explains he has much fear in him, which can be a problem, because there's always fear behind anger, which is behind hate, and these are adding up to a state of suffering, which also a state of being on the dark side.

The story what's told illustrates this perfectly.

You imply that you think, the older one gets, the easier for them to handle the loss of a loved one.

With all kindness in my heart, I have to tell you, that's just not true. The only thing age does is that when we get older, we more or less successfully internalize a sense of "I must get over this, I must beat this, I must take this blow with a straight face." So, we learn how to suffer with clenched teeth and screaming and weeping in the inside, because we're told, that's adult and mature. In my experience, real, genuine ability to handle the loss in a constructive way requires ceasing attachment to your loved one and develop unconditional love for them. That is, however, accessible for us in any age.

You say, Anakin spent the ten years between Episode I and II in constant worry for his mother's well-being, which undermined his Jedi training.

Since you said, you re-watched Episodes I-II-III recently, please help me: on which part or parts of the movies you draw this conclusion? What makes you think that he felt that his mother is in constant danger? Because to be honest, I see Anakin being afraid of losing his mother, I see him missing his mother, I see him being sad over not being with his mother, but I don't see him worrying for her well-being. He is afraid of losing her - he is not fearing for her.

He even says, "I don't know why I keep dreaming about her" in Episode II, and when he realizes that he’s having premonitions about his mother being in pain, and returns to Tatooine, his behavior toward Watto is quite friendly, rather than jumping to the conclusion that it must be his former slaver, who harmed Shmi, pretty heavily implying that he did not expect Shmi to get hurt while he is away, training.

You find it strange that Shmi did not contact with Anakin, and you vaguely suggest that she was not allowed to communicate with Anakin, because the Jedi would forbid it.

In Episode II, when they discuss the life of the Jedi Knight, Padmé says, "Must be difficult, having sworn your life to the Jedi... not being able to visit the places you like or do the things you like." To which Anakin replies: "Or be with the people that I love." Now, you read this in a way that says: Jedi Knights are not allowed to do the things they enjoy, visit the places they enjoy or be with the people they enjoy to be with. To me, this does not make too much sense.

To me, the discussion is about the fact that Jedi Knights go to the places and be with the people where they are needed, with who they need them, as their duty dictates this. Not where they would like to be, or with the people they would like to be.

When I watch Episode I, I see no reason to believe that Shmi and Anakin expected to be able to communicate, which makes sense - Tatooine is the seat of a crime lord, it would be rather strange if the heart of the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order would be a "phone call" away. I'm afraid, you read too much into this, which seems to be founded on the idea that the Jedi are frowning upon love.

You say, the Jedi could have done more for Anakin and they were supposed to change.

Well, at the end of the day, Anakin was resisting their teachings - that's not something that only he could have change. Instead, he wanted to stop things changing, he wanted to stop the sun from setting and to stop people from dying. From where I stand, I can see no flaw in how the Jedi Order operated.

You seem to say that the Jedi Council was wrong to not to say no to training Anakin.

With all fairness, the Jedi Council actually did say no to training Anakin, because he was too old to be trained. In the end, they said yes, because they felt, the right thing to do is to train him to cultivate unconditional love for all living beings, to cease his grasping and clinging to coming and passing things and to overcome his fear, anger, hate and aggression, and to train him to be a selfless guardian of peace and justice in the known universe. So we have the story as told and we know what happens there. But in Episodes IV, V and VI it's powerfully stated that it's not impossible. Luke started his own training even later in his life, and he was able to become a true Jedi Knight, something that Anakin failed to achieve until the very end.

You seem to say, since Darth Sidious would have been able to orchestrate the separatist crisis and the clone wars with the clone army, thus he would have been able to butcher the Jedi and turn the Republic into the Empire without Anakin helping him, proves that the Jedi Order was beyond saving, it was "institutionally dead". And that they are "predators" and they were meant to be erased.

I am truly sorry, but I have to say, I genuine have no idea of what makes you draw this conclusion. I have the feeling that there is something else going on that is unrelated to Star Wars, that you might need to work out... If I'm wrong about this, I apologize. It comes off like something else is going on.

Other Notable NPCs

This post will be a quick rundown of all the other relevant NPCs introduced in the main storyline of the game so far.

Palace Rulers

The first Palace ruler is Takeyuki Kiuchi; his Shadow is also known as Lord Cupid. Kiuchi is a confirmed phantom, known as the Collision Man, who violently runs into women while passing through train stations. He used to be a baseball player, but had to quit and become an office worker instead. His Palace takes the form of a baseball stadium.

Kiuchi's distortion revolves around blaming women for the problems in his life, after an elementary-school-aged Motoha embarrassed him while he was still an athlete, and later a scandal with a woman got him kicked off the team. He's stated to have mixed together feelings of lust with a desire for domination/"revenge", and treats women the way he does as payback for the women that he believes wronged him in the past.

After talking to his Shadow, it's revealed he considers baseball the only thing he was ever good at. When he thinks there's nothing left for him, Motoha reminds him what he actually liked about the sport, then convinces him to turn himself in and start fresh, and maybe get back into helping coach kids' baseball teams later on.

[In Wonder's visions, Kiuchi pushed a mother and her baby down a staircase, killing the baby. When he's later arrested, he seems to be having a breakdown about being a murderer, and how there's no coming back from this for him.]

His Treasure was a giant golden baseball in the Metaverse, and turned into an everyday rubber baseball in the real world.

The second Palace ruler is Hiromu Miyazawa; his Shadow is also known as Pan. Miyazawa is a confirmed phantom, related to the vicious bad reviews he gives restaurants, leading to their closure. He's a popular food critic, and is also known as the Flavor Swordsman. His Palace takes the form of a Japanese castle-themed movie set.

Miyazawa's distortion revolves around his desire to be an actor, and his inability to get protagonist roles or be taken seriously in supporting roles due to his appearance. He explains he had to throw away his pride to get roles, and eventually moved into food reviews instead because people liked his harsh reviews, so he got more fame and money. This pursuit of money eventually led him to extorting restaurants for good reviews. His Shadow is obsessed with being the protagonist of the "movie".

After talking to his Shadow, it's revealed he treats the chefs that he reviews so badly because he's jealous that they still have pride in their work, and are genuine to themselves, when he gave up his own pride and dreams. The ramen Shun made for him made him feel this so strongly he cried. Shun tells him he can start over and be more honest this time, after turning himself in, and Shun will treat him to ramen again even if he's penniless.

[In Wonder's visions, Miyazawa won the rigged contest he challenged Shun to, which led to Shun being declared an official phantom based on Miyazawa's lies about Shun's behavior. He mocks Shun even as Shun is informed his father figured died of a heart attack in the hospital.]

His Treasure was a golden film reel in the Metaverse, and turned into a movie ticket in the real world.

One of the rulers of the third Palace is Kumi Katayama, class 2C's homeroom teacher (the class Wonder and Motoha are in), as well as their math teacher. She seems to be the math teacher for class 2D (Shun and Tomoko's class) as well. Her Shadow is also known as Kiskil-lilla. Katayama is a confirmed phantom, known as the Rush Rider, who bikes recklessly and injures people while dressed as a Cyler Eats deliverywoman. Her Palace takes the form of a dam that is being pushed beyond its limits and falling apart, though it's later discovered it isn't solely her Palace.

While she's somewhat strict and no-nonsense during class, she seems softer outside of this, and asks Motoha and Wonder about Shun when Miyazawa's video worries her. Shun seems to regard her highly, saying she's a passionate person, and trusting her to listen to him. Katayama is also shown repeatedly to care deeply about the wellbeing of all her students, both present and former, and will go out of her way to help them. After Akashi (see next) comes to Kokatsu and begins to target her with his new policies, she becomes more desperate and stressed. Her Shadow reflects this, being painfully puppeteered by Shadow Akashi into attacking her students against her will.

Katayama is also revealed to have been a famous delinquent as a teen, and friends with Masa (further down the list). This is presumably when she cultivated the biking skill that she now uses as the Rush Rider.

[In Wonder's visions, Shadow Akashi sends so much electrical power through Shadow Katayama, to force her to keep fighting the Phantom Thieves, that the real-world Katayama dies.]

Her Treasure was a copy of a manga about bad teachers in the Metaverse.

The other ruler of the third Palace is Kei Akashi, an educational consultant who comes to Kokatsu Academy, allegedly sent by the school council to help with the problem of teacher overwork. His new policies target Katayama in particular, as he's using her as "bait" for some larger plan. To this end, he arranges situations to repeatedly get Katayama in deeper and deeper trouble with the dean, all while making himself look like the innocent good guy of the situation who can actually solve problems. His Shadow is also known as Demogorgon.

His Shadow lurks in Katayama's Palace, and is eventually identified by Ruferu to be a second ruler of the Palace. However, he's discovered to essentially be operating as a parasite, and notably the cognitions of the Palace see Katayama as their boss, while referring to Akashi as the "new director" they're all scared of. Shadow Akashi uses electrically-charged, cordlike arms to electrocute Shadow Katayama into doing whatever he wants her to (particularly, attacking the Phantom Thieves) while also stealing the power generated by her via the Palace to power himself up.

After the Phantom Thieves rescue Shadow Katayama from him, and convince her to return to her real self, Shadow Akashi puts the dam Palace on lockdown, and retreats to his corner of the Palace, the Control Center. Here, he has technology to mind-control the cognitions of the Palace, and even steals their emotional energy to use as a power source.

School-Related

Mr. Hakozaki is class 2C's science teacher. He's somewhat jumpy, and admits he doesn't spend a lot of time around other people, even idolizing a historical scientist who never shared the results of his research with anyone. Still, he seems extremely passionate about the science he teaches, even if he's anxious about actually teaching it to a group of students.

Mr. Shimonuma is class 2C's civics teacher. He doesn't seem to have much faith in his students, and primarily enjoys when they don't know an answer, so he can correct them. He's stern in a slightly sadistic way, though he hasn't yet been seen to go so far as throwing chalk at his students (like Ushimaru does to Joker); it's all verbal.

Mr. Endo is class 2C's English teacher. He's somewhat casual, with a slightly disinterested vibe, but he evidently know his subject, and doesn't seem to be slacking on teaching it. Still, he complains about the strangeness of English sometimes, and once mentions that he wishes the whole world spoke Esperanto.

Ms. Taniyama is class 2C's world history teacher. She's friendly, and seems gentle with her students, while of course displaying a knowledge of and interest in her subject. She seems to have some interest in various forms of divination, though it only comes up offhandedly.

Mr. Nagara is class 2C's literature teacher. He's very passionate and enthusiastic about his subject, and seems to generally feel emotions deeply. At the same time, he seems somewhat prone to tangents. He's the type to laugh at his own jokes, and is overall very reactive.

Kokatsu's Dean of Student Affairs is a man named Yamanashi. Yamanashi has a level of authority at the school, but he's still quick to become nervous if questioned or called out in any way, even if he stubbornly puts his foot down about whatever is under question. He tends to push any work he can off to Riko Tanemura (and then brag about how capable she is), and is quick to follow Akashi's new policies when they sound like they're in line with what the school wants, without much critical thinking.

His Shadow later appears in the third Palace, as Akashi's victim after Katayama, though his desires aren't strong or distorted enough to provide much power.

Other

Merope is Wonder's Velvet Room attendant. Though she has a very calm, collected, and straightforward demeanor, she is very dedicated to helping him however she can, including coming up with the idea of (and creating) the Phantom Idols that help him in combat.

She is also a Confidant of his, and it revolves around her "special project" to help improve his skills further. However, she is very interested in idols and idol culture- apparently believing them to be similar to the role Wonder plays- and much of her "special project" focuses on teaching Wonder more about idols, and how to be more like one. She is not only focused on being a good idol mentor towards Wonder, but also on herself being a proper idol fan, and refers to having done extensive research on the subject, though in practice she's evidently missing a bit of practical knowledge.

Merope seems to have a fondness for Wonder that may edge into romantic territory, though she's not romanceable. She casually refers to them doing things similar to what a couple might do- such as when they ride a ferris wheel together- and asks Wonder about it. However, as she tends to keep a very matter-of-fact tone, it's difficult to say whether she's actually flirting, or simply gauging his own reaction to understand him better.

Marthym is a humanoid shadow that mainly dwells in Mementos. She is a self-described businesswoman, and notably runs the in-game store that takes actual money, as well as allowing players to buy gacha pulls.

Marthym's main story role seems to be her loose function as a guide to Mementos. She explains to the Phantom Thieves how to open up areas using tickets collected on that floor, and mentions that this benefits her as well as them, though she doesn't clarify how.

She also introduces the player to Paradise, which is an area where the player can see their guild, and includes special rotating boss fights that give extra rewards. Again, this seems to be explained as part of her business.

Yamagoshi is the owner of the restaurants Toraiken and Ashouken, and has been running them for a long time, though his wife passed away at some point after their opening but prior to an elementary-school-aged Shun visiting. Miyazawa particularly harasses Yamagoshi, as he wants to be given ownership of Ashouken, especially after Yamagoshi fell ill.

Shun sees him as a surrogate father, and Yamagoshi evidently cares a lot about him as well, as he set aside an heirloom to be given to Shun when he turned 18. [In Wonder's vision, when Shun loses the competition and is declared a phantom, Yamagoshi dies of a heart attack.]

Yamagoshi seems to believe in teaching others, as he opened Ashouken specifically with the intention of it being a place for his employees to learn. He also believes in authentic flavor for his food, and is very proud of the restaurants' ramen's signature taste.

Masa is the person currently running the ramen restaurant Ashouken, though Yamagoshi actually owns it.

Masa is an apprentice of Yamagoshi's, and believes strongly in the same principles as he does. It's mentioned his dream is to open his own restaurant. He's familiar with Shun, and seems fond of him. Prior to the start of the game, however, Masa began to give into Miyazawa's demands for ingredient changes and bribes, even as it ruined Ashouken's food, because he didn't want Yamagoshi's restaurant to die completely.

After trying Shun's ramen in the competition Miyazawa challenged him to, he seems to have come to his senses, and becomes much more willing to stand up to Miyazawa, even if it risks his job. Masa is also the one to inform Shun when Miyazawa formally apologizes.

Masa later reveals that he and Katayama were friends in high school, and delinquents at the time. They seem to still keep in touch, as when Miyazawa got Shun fired from Ashouken, Katayama came to Masa to ask what happened.

How I came to Sodor

So, this is gonna be a bit different from how my life actually went, but that’s ok, it’s a story and it’s my au and I’m gonna change my history just a bit. So let’s say I had dreamt of Sodor since I was a little girl. I'd devoured every Thomas & Friends book, every episode of the television show, until the rolling hills and chugging engines were etched into my very soul. Sodor, with its quaint villages, friendly engines, and the comforting rhythm of steam and diesel, was my ideal world. The problem? I lived in a charming, albeit ordinary, town in North Carolina, USA, and the common people of my world were nice but still shunned my wild ideas of moving to Sodor.

Sodor, on the other hand, was a fictional island nestled somewhere in the British Isles. Or so the world theorised. See, like fairies, elves, or any other magical being/place, Sodor only appears to those it deems worthy, or to those who truly believe in magic. Seeing their admiration and acceptance for the supernatural, allows a whole world to be opened to their eyes and only their eyes. To any "normal" person, it may look like their friend is going insane, but to the "weirdo" a magical world of wonder is at their very fingertips. But I didn’t know about this legend and was unfortunately led astray from the path of magic.

But when I turned 15, I suddenly had a memory of an old Thomas video I used to watch and being more informed on how to use the internet, I found lots of people still liked this show. I saw lots of posts saying how the legend was real and that it should be believed by everyone. I finally gave it a chance again, resparking my love for this magical world and spent years meticulously planning, learning everything I could about how to get to Sodor. I first had to move to England to find the Magic Buffers at Shining Time Station.

I saved every penny, working as hard as I could and living frugally, as well as school, my dream of Sodor a constant beacon in my otherwise ordinary life. Finally, after years of preparation, and years of being made fun of, I had enough. When I turned 18, I left my home in N.C, but reassured my parents I’d keep in touch. With a deep breath and a heart full of anticipation, I booked a one-way ticket to London.

Arriving in the bustling city, I felt a thrill of excitement. The red double-decker buses, the charming cobblestone streets, the smell of wet concrete in the air - it was all so wonderfully different. Yet, Sodor remained elusive. I researched, asked people around, hell I even visited a few model railway shops, hoping for a clue, a whisper of where to find my beloved island.

One rainy afternoon, while sipping tea in a quaint bookshop, I saw a golden glittery figure in the corner of my eye. I quickly realised I was encountering the Golden Maiden. It was said this woman was a beautiful figure of light, blinding and insanity inducing to the non-believers who shunned others, but a warm, comfortable, almost nostalgic campfire glow to those who were more open minded.

I followed her, accidentally spilling my tea, but it didn’t matter. I knew this was my chance and followed her. She led me to a wall which she slipped right through like a ghost! But me being a mortal human, I couldn’t. I ran into the wall like an idiot and a book on a nearby shelf tumbled onto me. Upon further inspection, it was an old, leather-bound book that looked like it was written in the early 1800’s.

It was a travel guide, not for tourists, but for railway enthusiasts, detailing hidden routes and forgotten lines. And there it was, a small, almost illegible paragraph, mentioning a "secret line" that connected the mainland to a remote island, a place known as "Sodor." The line was rarely used, a relic of a bygone era, but it was still operational. My heart leaped. This was it! My chance.

The journey was arduous. I took a train to a sleepy seaside town, a boat to a port higher up in the Scottish waters then a rickety bus to a secluded Scottish station, where a lone, aged steam engine awaited. The engine, a sturdy black steam engine with a friendly but mature face, was named "Douglas," and he seemed to understand my passionate desire to reach Sodor.

I heard him chuckle behind me as I took pictures. I quickly became sheepish and tried to act normal but he said it was cute how eager I was to get on his train. I blushed at his compliment and asked if it was that obvious. He said it was but that it was normal for newcomers to be excited. This island is still an unsolved mystery to the rest of the world. As the final call for people to board the train, we said our goodbyes and I got on.

As the train chugged along the forgotten line, I watched the landscape change. What once was a rainy, cloudy day turned into lush green vines that were blooming with flowers of all kinds. Soon, it was velvet green fields that replaced the vines, and the air grew crisp and clean.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the train pulled into a small station, surrounded by rolling hills and the gentle sound of steam. I was in Sodor. Tears welled in my eyes as I stepped onto the platform, the reality exceeding even my wildest dreams.

The island was even more charming, more welcoming than I’d ever felt back home. And as I looked around, a plume of steam rising in the distance, I knew I was finally home.

My journey to Sodor hadn't been easy, but it had been worth every penny, every sacrifice, every obstacle overcome. I’d arrived, not as a tourist, but as a dreamer who dared to believe in the magic of a fictional island and found it to be real, waiting for me with open arms or, rather, open buffers.

I’ll let you in on one of my biggest fears.

When I was a kid I was worried I would be completely useless to society and end up homeless.

I used to fear the future.

I’m not joking.

When I was growing up, one of my biggest fears was becoming an adult and trusting in my own abilities to provide for myself. As a little kid I would stay up at night staring at the ceiling worried about what I was going to do with my life. In my mind I had no idea what work was. I imagined wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase filled with only God knows what and going off to an office doing random grown-up stuff and getting paid for it. The worry was wondering what that grown-up works as. What was I going to do with my life? What was my purpose?

True story, when I got my first job at a video game company and got the phone call telling me what my first salary would be I breathed a sigh of relief over the phone saying, “Thank God someone in this world thinks I’m useful.”

My oldest son is graduating from high school this year and I can sense a little bit of that anxiety from him wondering what he will be doing with the rest of his life. I can relate and I don’t give him any pressure to rush to any conclusions. I find it unsettling that some of us bust our humps trying to get into college and then suddenly a university asks you what major you want to do which will decide your path in the future.

Statistically, about 85% of graduating college students don’t do anything with their college degree.

“Find your passion,” I tell him. “It was what you were meant to do.”

Now, I’m at a point in my life where a few of my friends and folks around me are looking into the near future (maybe the next five to eight years) towards retirement. That golden ticket. The moment they can finally get off that train and spend the rest of their lives doing what they REALLY want to do with their lives. This all came as a shock to me. Not about about whether or not some of us can actually retire, but the fact that that time has flown and suddenly I’m nearing the other side of work life. I’ve been adulting for roughly 22 years now, which feels like nothing, and as I reflect on the past years I find myself rather fortunate that I happen to do have had the honor and privilege to do exactly what I wanted and was born to do. I understand that not many people get that in their life. I’m lucky. So, while folks around me are looking to get off the work force train, or at least dream about it, I realize that I have absolutely no interest in stopping, and that’s a good thing.

I think I did something right?

I’ve spent the last 48 years of my life worrying all these years if I’m going to be okay only to stand on the last third of a marathon called "the working life" and realizing that things just might work out fine.

When my father died a few years ago I remember him eating a hot dog as his last meal, which was odd because he was obsessed with his health to the point that he never took pleasure in indulging in fun things so this was something he would never do. All his life he just kept obsessing about eating right and exercising convinced he was going to die of cardiovascular disease when suddenly it was liver cancer. He just sat there eating his hot dog and saying to himself, “What was the point of worrying all those those years?”

He didn’t know I was listening. The best piece of life advice he gave me was something he didn't intend for me to hear, but that moment spoke volumes to me.

Now, here’s where it gets a little interesting.

I realized something recently about myself while attending a few literary conferences and festivals in the past few years.

I’m suddenly the old guy.

While 48 isn’t particularly old I’m finding myself to be the veteran on panels filled with twenty somethings. I see fewer and fewer of the peers that I came up with at conferences. The Publisher’s Weekly Marketplace is filled with young new people I’ve never heard of before. The output of some folks I had admired for years seem to have dropped off a bit and I pray it’s because they’ve willingly chosen to slow their lives down. The scariest part is that I’ve finally reached a point in my life where I question if I have enough years in my life to create all the ideas that I have in my head. It feels like only yesterday that I started out in this business and I was hustling to try to get my foot firmly planted in this literary industry hoping to be recognized by editors and art directors, and you, the readers. Now, I find myself hustling for a slightly different reason. I feel Iike I’m trying to keep up with the younger new voices. As younger generations plant their foot into the cultural zeitgeist I’ve noticed an extremely talented pool of young new literary voices who seem to effortlessly dispense this perfect voice suited to our current youth, but they do it in a slightly different way from me. Their perception of the world is slightly different than mine. To put it kindly, I’ve wondered if the perception of how I view the world has become a little dated?

Call this a self-reflecting form of ageism.

When you write a memoir about yourself you are left generally spending a lot of time reflecting on your entire life and you are left with this inner need to understand every facet about yourself. You need to understand how all the gears work and you constantly ask yourself why you are the way you are. This self-awareness has been quite useful to me. I think it’s important to stand outside of yourself and be completely unbiased as you reflect about who you are. The brutal honestly of my world is that I need to constantly be aware of how the world is changing and ask myself if I’m changing with it. This is not to say that I don’t think I have anything worthwhile to say or write, but I wonder if I’m delivering that message in the right way? In order to speak to people you need to know HOW to say something as well as WHAT you’re going to say. My childhood was filled with toys, tv shows, riding bikes into the night, and building junk forts in some far uncharted corner of town. Today’s youth is filled with the internet, Netflix streaming, texting, and Tik Tok memes.

It’s apples and oranges.

I know folks who use old vaudeville gags in their work. Pies in the face, double takes, and old puns. Tools of an old era that kids are left scratching their heads wondering, “What did the author mean my that? And what’s an anvil?” There’s a lack of self-awareness where they feed their own personal interests not realizing that the audience they serve is completely left in the dark. You suddenly look around and realize that you’re completely out of the loop and if you try to fake it then it will all just come off as awkward because everyone can see that you’re simply trying too hard.

There comes a point in life when you suddenly realize that you aren’t up with all the gossip and trends and the who’s who of social media celebrities but I think the kiss of death to any person’s personal growth is when they say, “I miss the good old days…”

The cruel truth about the world is that if you long for the “good old days” you’re suddenly going to find yourself surrounded by a world you no longer understand because the world doesn’t care if you change with it or not.

I know people decades older than me who feared computers and refused to ever touch one and now they are surrounded by a digital world and they curse it for being fully automated and they can no longer use cash. I know folks who miss old school rap while scratching their heads over what new rappers are playing these days. Do you fear self-driving cars? Too bad, because capitalism says it’s coming whether you like it or not. Does AI terrify you? I mean, yes, it ABSOLUTELY SHOULD, but it’s coming.

My attitude isn’t that I’m being forced to adapt. Now, my view is that I’m eager to see what lies down the road and where my place is in it. I see that the world is changing rapidly and I don’t want to get off this train because the moment I stop looking towards the future and spend more time reflecting on my past is when I stop growing as a person.

I don’t know how well I’ll adapt to the future but I no longer fear it. All I know is that I've done fine for most of my life and I should have confidence that my desire to grow will help me carry on.

There’s no point in worrying.

Take life one day at a time, and just savor the precious moments life gives you...

And eat the hot dog.

The soulmate train worked like this.

When a person was ready to meet their soulmate, a special golden ticket would be delivered directly to them. All they had to do from that moment on was find the station and use the ticket to get on the train. The ticket agent would be responsible for arranging the destinations of the ride, and they would be the ones to help the soulmates meet.

Of course, he also learned about the people who never had the golden ticket.

2. It Started With A Demodog (Billy/Steve - fix it fic from the night at the Byers)

Steve was freaking out. And he had every right to freak out. Because what the fuck was happening? A year ago, he had a normal life, but he also had Nancy. So, things changed, he guessed. It wasn’t supposed to change this much. Not to the point he was carrying a dead Demodog in his arms.

It was just supposed to be a silly little facade, because Chrissy was a certified lesbian who was living with her girlfriend in New York, but of course, she had to tell her lovely daddy that she was dating a guy.

Eddie wasn’t a Catholic.

Church was never his place to be, he suffered every second in that place, and he couldn’t wait for it to be over. However, it all changed, when the new priest came to town.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005, Tim Burton)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a 2005 film directed by Tim Burton.

The film stars Johnny Depp and is based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl.

Another adaptation had previously been made from the book in 1971, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, by Mel Stuart, with Gene Wilder, from whom, however, Burton said he did not take inspiration for his, instead trying to return to the spirit original of Dahl's novel.

Charlie Bucket is a poor child who lives with his family, consisting of his parents, his paternal grandparents George and Georgina and his maternal grandparents Joe and Josephine.

One evening grandfather Joe tells Charlie that, years before, he worked in the first shop opened by the man who would become the most famous sweets maker in the world, the enigmatic Willy Wonka. Unfortunately, Wonka's rivals, envious of his sweets and success, sent spies to steal his secret recipes, to the point that Willy Wonka was forced to close the factory, firing his employees.

One day Willy Wonka makes an announcement that shocks the whole world: whoever finds five golden tickets hidden in as many chocolate bars produced by him, which could be found anywhere in the world, will have the opportunity to visit his grandiose factory, and one of the five visitors will win a special prize. As soon as the news spreads, the sweet shops are stormed and, after a short time, the first four tickets are found by four children: Augustus Gloop, from D��sseldorf, Germany, greedy and obese; Veruca Salt, from Buckinghamshire, England, a capricious and spoiled little girl by her rich father; Violet Beauregarde, from Atlanta, Georgia, a vain and arrogant little girl, world bubble gum champion and winner of numerous awards; Mike Teavee from Denver, Colorado, a very intelligent and grumpy child addicted to television and video games.

During the tour of the factory, a series of flashbacks reveal Willy Wonka's past: he was the son of the uncompromising dentist Wilbur Wonka, who made him wear enormous orthodontic braces and didn't allow him even the smallest sweet. One Halloween night, after his father had thrown the sweets he had collected into the fire, little Willy secretly managed to retrieve and eat a chocolate. After closing the factory due to recipe thefts, he decided to reopen it having found new and loyal workers among the indigenous Oompa-Loompas.

During the tour inside the factory, unlike Charlie, the other four children turn out to be unpleasant and disobedient and are involved in various events due to which they leave the scene one after the other: Augustus falls into a river of chocolate from which he was trying to drink and is sucked into a tube that collects the chocolate and takes it to the various departments; Violet tries an experimental chewing gum on herself and swells, transforming into a huge blueberry; Veruca is attacked and thrown into the garbage dump by a group of squirrels trained to shell nets, after trying to catch one; Mike gets teleported by a machine to transfer Wonka Bars to the television and becomes very small.

-goes w/out saying but spending 5 months travelling and cycling around europe was so cool. my fav bit was a month in italy -- particularly a workaway involving staying in a beautiful umbrian farmstead with a gaggle of gay men, so much cooking and cocktails and basking beneath the wisteria, walks thru medieval hilltop villages surrounded by golden meadows.. travelling solo is nice but i'm very much an extrovert and i felt so touched by the love and friendship i experienced here. i still talk to my boys most days. -i visited one of my best mates in cyprus and it was so fun i accidentally stayed for a whole month. loads of nature hikes, festivals, gigs, exploring abandoned cities, snorkelling in oceans so deep and blue and ancient. -later we flew to england to do brighton pride (hooked up with a lovely irish lass 😳) & visit some more expat uni pals. we went on a road trip afterwards in devon/cornwall and it was so beautiful but again the company was the main thing; i spend the whole time laughing til it hurt

-actually that reminds me of a random cute "small world" moment. on the bus from venice to rome, i saw a girl next to me reading the same book. we got chatting and it turned out she was going to brighton pride as well. we decided to meet up there, but everyone's phone service was jammed and we couldn't find each other!! so i gave up. a couple days later, i was boarding the train to london when i heard... "ASIA!!???" and it was her!!!!!!

-i cut my intercontinental cycle trip short cos i got into the final selection for an antarctica job and needed to be in the uk for the interview. as such i explored the scottish isles. my fav part was staying at a victorian manor in inverness owned by a witch who looked like stevie nicks and was hosting the scottish opera for the week. they invited me for wine and ghost stories by the fireplace and ending up giving me a ticket to the opera which was sooo silly but sweet!! so i saw carmen for free and gifted them some nice tesco roses and wine in return -i lost my phone in corfu but i couldnt be mad cos it was so fun. i went to a BEAUTIFUL grotto to snorkel which ended up being like a mamma mia beach bar. i was drinking a pina colada the size of my head when two aussie girls came over and said "do you mind if we smoke here" and i said "no go ahead" envisioning a cigarette but it ended up being an ENORMOUS doobie. they shared it with me and all the other girlies, we got crossfaded and went swimming, and i dropped my phone when trying to sensibly cross a road (it got handed into the consulate but shipping is so expensive so i'm working on that!)

-as such i've spent most of this year without a functioning phone & it's been grand. just so much more present and alive, got really into foraging, birdwatching, beachcombing, swimming in the ocean every day in the summer..

-coming back home was actually more tender than anything though. everyone goes on about post-travel blues but i've so enjoyed slipping back into mundanity; floor time with my best friend (you), parties, concerts, weekly life drawing and art club, finally feeling at home in this city. i got to illustrate a novel, animate a tv show opening, get my first poem published in a journal, work on a video game, and also win an nz game award for mine! i'm so grateful for my girlfriend and family and friends and lovely flat on the seaside. also i quit my shitty job for reals and am studying animal management next year so YAY

Action Comics #5 [October 1938]

After last issue, I feel like there’s not much that can unpleasantly surprise me. Superman’s questionable morality aside, we have a ways to go before we even get to Batman, much less Marvel comics and whatever else I find. It’s also a shorter story today - nine pages instead of thirteen. Hopefully that’ll make it a bit easier to go through!

Not much to say about the cover. Could be vaguely racist. That is not my problem.

On the other hand, the pre-story ad page had me double-take for a second when I thought it was Oliver Queen. But no, it was just a random dude with the same facial hair and haircut. Though now that makes me wonder what situation poor Ollie could have been caught up in to end up in a flooding dungeon.

We open up this story to telegraph lines broadcasting news of a terrible disaster. The Valleyho Dam is cracking under the strain of a huge downpour; should it give way, a mountain of water will sweep down the valley, killing thousands and destroying fertile land.

…you know, I think I saw a clip of this story before, when I was watching a youtube video on Superman. It pulled on some clips from an animated series that was clearly based on these original tales. Dunno when said series was animated and broadcast, but I kind of want to track them down and watch them, since they’re tied into this whole ‘golden age’ thing. Probably will be a while, though, if ever. Don’t want to spoil myself on content that’s 85 years old.

Sounds like I have something to look forward to then in the nearish future!

At the Daily Star, the editor-in-chief demands Clark be brought to him. Lois tells him that Clark’s not in the office; the editor tells her to look for him and have him report in before he loses his mind. Lois asks why she can’t handle the assignment. The editor says it’s too important for a girl. Lois is not impressed with that logic, thinking mildly violent thoughts as she heads out.

Coincidentally, Clark is just outside the building. She puts on an eager air as she approaches him. Clark is shocked she’s actually happy to see him. She asks him to do her a favor and cover an assignment for him; he leaps on the task, eager to please. She tells him to head to the local hospital’s maternity ward, since a Mrs. Mahoney is expecting… septuplets? (My god, that poor woman. Someone help her. Can a person even have that many kids at once?) Clark thanks Lois for the chance to handle it. 

While Lois is getting herself a ticket to Valleyho, Clark is at the hospital, learning that Lois lied to him. Gasp! Honestly, that makes way more sense than having to worry about the poor theoretical woman he could have had to deal with. Clark starts to make his way back to the office, wondering if Lois double-crossed him.

The editor is not pleased when he finally shows his face - the biggest news story in months on the fire, and Clark wasted time at a hospital?? Clark tries to explain that he didn’t know, but the editor isn’t hearing it - the last train’s already left! Clark’s fired, he can report to the cashier.

Clark, however, has bigger fish to fry. He finds himself an empty room and strips out of his work suit, revealing he had his costume on underneath, cape included. Which, you know what, sure, why the fuck not. Maybe he just keeps the cape in his briefcase and puts it on afterward. 

Superman leaves the Daily Star from the roof, leaping out into the night. Leap after leap, covering huge distances, until he’s caught up to the train that Lois is on. He hits the ground running, quickly outpacing the train, all while smugly thinking about how if Lois thinks she can scoop him, she’s got another thing coming! 

He quickly reaches a bridge the train is set to go over - only to stop when he notices something wrong. A torrent has loosened the bridge’s supports, causing the track to tilt at an angle that makes a wreck inevitable. The train whistles in the distance - there’s no time to lose. Without a moment’s hesitation, Superman dives forward, seizing the supports and starting to push until the tracks level out again. He holds it in place as the train passes by, then allows it to crash. 

The passengers are startled at the sound, quickly gathering at the windows to see what happened. They gape at the collapsed bridge behind them, one of them commenting on how they’d be dead if it’d happened an instant earlier. The drivers note that they need to send a warning at the next junction for the other trains.

When the train arrives at Valleyho, Lois has to fight through everyone getting on board. She quickly flags down a taxi, but the driver wants nothing to do with going to the dam - she can have the car, he’s getting out of there! Lois, not to be deterred, does take the taxi for a spin, speeding her way to the dam. 

God, Lois truly is her best self, in full gremlin mode. She will get her story, dammit, even if it means throwing herself bodily into danger. It’s good to know that that’s been a core trait of hers right from the start. I already think this is my favorite story so far, and it’s half because of her.

Meanwhile, Superman’s struggling to hold the dam together, desperate to buy the people below enough time to evacuate. 

(Which, can I just say, this is the other half of the reason this story is delighting me - we’re seeing the core of the hero that we’re most familiar with 85 years later, the man who has incredible power and uses it to save lives. Like, yeah, the bits with him tackling rich people corruption, including flexing his investigator skills, is well and good, and gives a showcase of what he as Clark capable of. But him holding the dam together to buy the people below time to escape is just. Mmm. That’s the core of Superman we all are familiar with.)

Eventually, even Superman isn’t enough to keep the dam up; with a huge roar, it falls to pieces, sending floodwater roaring down the valley. Superman leaps above the turbulent rapids - but Lois can’t do the same, stuck in her taxi as the waters rush towards her. Superman spies the car, and rushes to save her, but the waters are faster, dragging the vehicle under and along for the ride. Lois braces herself, expecting a watery death -

Only to be pulled from the car by Superman, who quickly rushes towards the surface with her in his arms. Once they’re on the shore and Superman can readjust her, so she’s in a more comfortable bridal carry, he takes off like a shot, racing ahead of the floodwaters. 

Lois stirs, holding on tightly as he leaps up to a high pinnacle. He sets her down so he can put all of his strength into pushing on the rock; soon enough, the peak starts to crack, cascading downwards into the path of the water. The rocks seal up the mountain gap entirely, forcing the water to take another route away from the town.

Superman exhales in relief - that had been too close. Lois is ecstatic, gushing about how he saved all those people, before declaring that she could - and would - kiss him. Superman starts to refuse, only to be cut off by the kiss, temporarily dazed afterward from how good it was, much to her amusement. 

Superman sweeps her off her feet soon after, taking her to someplace she’ll be safe - where he’ll be safe from her as well. During the trip, she talks about how the first time he’d carried her like that, she’d been frightened - of the trip and of him. But now she loves it, and him! When he finally sets her down at Valleyho town, she begs him to stay, but Superman merely wishes her well and takes off.

Soon after, Clark calls in, stating that he’d gotten himself a plane to Valleyho and had some sensational news. He asks if he’s rehired; based on his reply afterward, the answer seems to be yes! When he finally leaves the phone booth, Lois happens to be there. Clark states that while the stunt she pulled wasn’t nice, he still likes her. Lois snubs him, thinking about how Clark is a spineless worm she can hardly bear to look at, especially after having been in the arms of a real man.

And with that, this story is a wrap! Wow! Short, but I loved it. This feels like the first establishing moment for both of them, in multiple ways. Here’s to hoping we get more stories like this going forward!

MEMBERS:

Kim Seok Jin (Jin)

Jin is the hyung of BTS (the oldest). Meaning he has to take care of his younger members since they’re very far away from their family due to their training. His younger members were raised by him for more than a decade! And I do think that they were raised right by their Jin hyung with all their awards and recognitions they still have been very humble about it.

He is a songwriter and the vocalist of the group. Jin has co-written and released three solo tracks with BTS: "Awake" in 2016, "Epiphany" in 2018, and "Moon" in 2020, all of which have charted on South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart

For now, Jin is serving his country as a military personnel with Hoseok.

Min Yoongi (Suga)

The lead rapper of the group came from a financially unstable family in Daegu. But due to his hard work he is now part of the Biggest Boy Band in The World and the global ambassador for Valentino. He used to work as a delivery boy in his teenage years. While working as a delivery boy he had a major injury which caused him to have surgery. He's been battling with mental illness for the past years. His fans and group members were a big help to him to overcome it.

Suga has also collabed with big time singers, like PSY, IU, Halsey and many more.

Jung Hoseok (J-hope)

The third hyung in the group. He is the ambassador of Louis Vuitton all because of his great fashion sense. Before debuting with BTS, J-Hope was part of an underground dance team called Neuron, and took dance classes at Gwangju Music Academy for six years, from fourth grade to his first year in high school when he signed with Big Hit Entertainment.[He was relatively well known for his dance skills, and won various local prizes, including first place in a national dance competition in 2008. 

In 2019, J-Hope released a free collaboration single, "Chicken Noodle Soup", featuring American singer Becky G, on September 27.The track debuted at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100, making J-Hope the first member of BTS to chart on the Hot 100 as a solo artist, the third Korean solo artist to rank on the chart , and the sixth Korean artist overall to do so. "Chicken Noodle Soup" also became J-Hope's second song to debut at number one on the World Digital Song Sales chart. And now, he is currently serving Korea as a soldier.

Kim Namjoon (RM)

RM, is the leader and the main rapper of the group. He is called the Backbone of K-pop, since he was the main reason why it was popular and why the group BTS exists which contributed a lot to the Korean economy. Namjoon, is the only BTS member to be fluent in english which is a big help to them when they go to foreign countries. As a child, RM largely learned English by watching the American sitcom Friends with his mother. As a student, he actively wrote poetry and often received awards for his writing. He posted his work to an online poetry website for roughly one year, where he received moderate attention. He also has an iq of 148. 

RM is the youngest and second most-credited songwriter in the association's history. With 213 songs attributed to his name as a songwriter and composer by the Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), as of April 2023.

Park Jimin (Jimin)

Jimin’s passion for dancing started at an early age. When he was in high school he learned contemporary dancing as a top student from Busan High School of Arts. Seeing his talent, one of his teachers suggested that he should audition for an entertainment company. With his talent, he successfully made it to Bighit. And now he has a networth of $8 million plus his collaboration with Dior which is $17 million. And a little fun fact is that Jimin is always teased by his younger member Jungkook because of his height. (174 cm)

Jimin's vocals have been described as delicate and sweet. He is regarded as an exceptional dancer among the members of BTS and in K-pop in general, often praised for his "smooth and elegant movements" and charm on stage. In the documentary Burn the Stage, Jimin addressed his perfectionism, stating that even the smallest mistakes on stage make him feel guilty and stressed.

Kim Taehyung (V)

V, also known as Taehyung, first aspired to be a professional singer in elementary school. With his father's support, he began taking saxophone lessons in early middle school as a means of pursuing a musical career. V eventually became a trainee for Big Hit Entertainment after passing an audition in Daegu. He never actually intended to audition, he was just there to support his friend but I guess he was too good.  

Jeon Jungkook (JK)

The moment Jungkook saw Namjoon’s audition video for Bighit he knew he had to join. Jungkook is said to be Namjoon’s #1 Fan and joined the auditions because of him. Jungkook is the maknae of the group meaning he is the youngest and left his home for his dreams to become a superstar. And with that he now has an astonishing net worth of 20 million US dollars and is the ambassador of Calvin Klein.

The group's success can be attributed to their unique sound, relatable lyrics, and dedicated fanbase known as ARMY (Adorable Representative MC for Youth). BTS fans have played a significant role in the group's success, and here are a few ways in which they have helped BTS:

Brain Conference Shenanigans

Fine. Let's recapitulate and give more context to the previous post.

If you could tell, I managed to apply to the Danish conference. Not only that, but I got selected to present a poster. Yeepideedoo, how good is that? If only this was not communicated two weeks before the first day of the conference.

Alas, under a bit of stress, I managed to pay the (very expensive) registration fee, get some last minute flight tickets to Denmark, and a place to stay. Under normal circumstances I would choose the hotel of the venue but I thought I already spent too much money this year out of my funding for conferences and training purposes so I decided to stay in an Airbnb. To be more specific, I got a treehouse Airbnb because it seemed to be close enough at the time.

After doing more analysis and working on a poster based on the narrative of my main project, I had a meeting with my boss to discuss how I should finalise it and we both came to the conclusion that it would be ideal to present my side project instead. This gave me however three days to work on a brand new poster, for which most figures were not made by me but my Mr Genius. My boss spoke to him and he was surprisingly positive about it and encouraged me to do it. So like a good miracle worker I made that poster happen in 3 days, starting it from scratch, and managed to print it on the final day before travelling to Denmark. I sent the poster to a printing company 1 minute after the time specified by them for same-day printing, but I called them to beg a bit and they were fine with it. Phew.

The final hours before my flights included Ginger Naruto's final goodbye in the pub right by the lab and a mere one and a half hours of sleep before heading off to Gatwick on a night bus. The cherry on top was receiving messages and videos from Ginger Naruto, Golden Retriever Boy and his research assistant, as well as the bride from Bosnia losing it on the dance floor of a dance club in southwest London. And receiving those when I was having my little pity party sitting in the cold, with my eyes burning in East Croydon while waiting for the train that would take me to the airport. I really should've gone with them instead of having some internal crisis until I only had little more than one hour of sleep left.

At last, I had landed in Copenhagen. The city that had become my favourite since 2021, when I had first visited it. My check in was only at 3pm, so I carried my poster roll on my shoulders to a café accross the city and posted that lame and brief post, while I waited for my phone to be fully charged I was reading a paper that my boss had sent me. The walk following this felt like being reminded that an old friend had remained the same after years of not talking. The vibes were at times killed by my poster falling of my shoulders or it being mistaken for a weapon by the Danish police. But, given the circumstances, it all felt glorious. I'm happy with my choice to spend one day before and one after the conference in Copenhagen.

My hostel was surprisingly fancy, and my bed was private and cozy. I stayed in it for the rest of the day and decided I would have an early night the recover from my sleep deprivation. Before going to sleep I received a message in response to some pictures I uploaded on social media indicating that I was in Copenhagen. The messages were from a Latvian guy I met during the wedding in Brazil. I completely forgot that he lived in Copenhagen! We scheduled to meet in a coffee on the following morning before I took the train to Rungstedskyst.

As for his origin story: I was a bridesmaid for a couple of friends I knew from university in May this year, in Rio. The groom is also in academia and he is now a post-doc in Norway. He briefly worked with this Latvian guy for a bit and invited him to the wedding. I took two friends of mine from London with me to the trip (to be more precise, the vegan witch who is actually from Freiburg, and her ginger princess flatmate who is from around Birmingham), and bargained with the bride in order to take them to the wedding. Since he was a bit out of place due to the majority of the people in the wedding being Brazilian, he quickly joined our little group of foreigners. We were the only ones treating him normally, since the other Brazilians were fauning over this guy just for being outside of the country and having blue eyes despite being just your average nice nerdy guy with no major redeeming features (I say this in the nicest way possible). My first ex boyfriend, who I was with for seven years and was my accompanying Groomsman, casually invited all of us to his place the next day, and all of my dear gringos said yes. My ex's sister had somehow come at the same time from Berlin and trafficked Berliner Luft, so that's what we had while we all introduced Bridgerton to this poor Latvian lad. He started off by saying "I have no clue what Bridgerton is" and by the end he was completely hooked. I have to say, watching scenes of some fingering happening in a Victorian carriage on a big screen with my ex's family, my friends from London and a random Latvian man I met during the wedding was not what I imagined I'd be doing in Rio but the whole thing was hillarious.

After one of the best nights of sleep in my life (and in a hostel nonetheless!) , I checked out. I was almost late after speaking to an antivaxxer in the lobby (I think it's a duty of us, publically funded researchers, to make scientific knowledge transparent to the public, although sometimes it's exhausting), but made it to the café. After a chill and friendly catch up with the Latvian guy I took my train to the conference venue at last, in Rungstedskyst.

I arrived a bit too early for the conference but not early enough to check-in in my Airbnb. I thought that it would be nearby but I guess that the adrenaline resulting from the need to find accomodation fast made me oblivious to the fact that this was in another town, one hour away by bus. Silly me.

I decided to leave my things at the conference venue, put my poster in its designated place and have a nostalgic stroll by the beach. Soon enough it was time for the conference to start and I saw Miho and Sunshine Athlete as well as my old boss from Frankfurt.

My ex-boss from Frankfurt is quite an intimidating woman and huge in our field (this conference was made as a celebration for her being awarded the Brain Prize this time after all), but I feel that talking to her now feels far more fluid, she feels more human and approachable. Not entirely sure if she changed, or I changed, or both. It felt heartwarming that she still seemed to consider me one of her own, and put the three of us to mediate questions for the different sessions of the conference. In this case, I would mediate the entirety of the first day. My current boss' flight was late so here would only get here later in the afternoon. I must say, this still remains the best conference I have ever been in, in terms of talks, venues, food (despite the fact they were lowkey starving me, Miho and Sunshine Athlete for being vegetarians/vegan) and networking. The talks kept me genuinely absorbed and I had many good notes about ideas and techniques that I could apply to my work. A real treat!

But just how I remembered, talks ended around 7pm, dinner went until 8pm, and networking would continue until late hours with plenty of alcohol. Which would've been perfectly fine, if my treehouse Airbnb wasn't an hour away and had awful connections. I decided to head to it around 9.30pm and decided to walk there to familiarise myself with the path.

Well, well, well, this idiot here got lost because Google maps told her to walk through a forest in the dark of the Danish countryside. Thankfully, she was not enough of an idiot to actually do it.

So yeah, halfway there I decided to get a bus, but it took 20 minutes to arrive. My feet had blisters at this point, it was super late, I sent many apologies and updates to my Airbnb host and hoped she wouldn't be terribly inconvenienced. I'm too much of an anxious goody-two-shoes for this crazy lifestyle I swear. Getting there my host was super friendly and my treehouse was adorable and cozy, although there was no heating or wi-fi. I was thinking of how I could possibly deal with this situation for the next three days though. It's fine, faith in the universe something-something, things will fall into place blablabla.

Maybe, just maybe, it was good that they accepted me so late, just so that I would have to stay at this idyllic treehouse Airbnb in a small town in the Danish countryside. Maybe, this has forced me to broaden my horizons and this made it all worth it. Unfortunately, I must disagree with this assumption and would do unspeakable things to be in that luxurious conference hotel right now. Thankfully, the Sam to my Frodo (might be interchangeable roles here), Miho, offered me to stay in her bed for two out of the four days. The bed sharing thing is a silly tradition that we have by sheer inevitability. It somehow always happens.

Back in 2021 I actually shared a room (and a bed) with Miho and everyday at 7am she would leave the bed to join the lab of a cold-shock researcher to go jump in the ocean like a freak. They found out that it is protective against neurodegeneration so that became their thing. Whatever. All the evidence points out that this is my freaky year, so I decided to join them this time. I made it to my knees before feeling excrutiating pain in my feet and quitting like a little bitch. Still, I hope that this was sufficient to give me any extra crumbs of RBM3 in my bloodstream.

As unlikely as it was, due to time of exposure and the fact that this does not seem to happen to everyone, I still felt more fresh and ready for one more day of talks, rushed note-taking, and incessant networking. My boss has this insane talent of creating collaborations out of thin air. He would appear during coffee breaks with different PIs to ask if I had time to do certain experiments to collaborate with them before disappearing into thin air, as if he was the twink version of the Dungeon Master from the 1983 Dungeons and Dragons animation.

The cherry on top was that I forgot that I needed to prepare slides for a flashtalk to advertise my poster. Fuckfuckfuckfuck. It should be just one, very well done and easy to follow, slide that I should present for 90 seconds. I spent the morning session of the second day working on it sneakily and making the script for my flash-talk. This was surprisingly stressful for the weight of this conference and because I was the only representation that my lab had here. There was also an element of wanting to prove myself to my ex-boss that put my stress levels through the roof.

During the first coffee break of this day, while having some non-caffeinated tea to avoid having a full-on anxiety attack, I found the PI that I had first applied for a PhD with. His lab is in Basel and they do amazing work on how certain RNA regulation affects neuronal network formation and even impacts social disorders for example. I had reached out for him when I was going to leave Frankfurt, and decided to try my luck again when the whole Berlin thing happened, so I explained the story back in the day. For my surprise, he remembered me and the things that happened, and asked how I personally dealt with that before asking me what my current project is. I spoke to him a bit about my main project, but since I was here to present and discuss my side-project, I spoke about it at length. The special part about it, is that it's based on seeing the opposite of what one expects in a specific event, but for one protein which is quite relevant in general neuronal function. To my huge surprise, he started talking about how his team has observed a similar thing in another protein of their interest, and they were puzzled as to why that was. He said he was not going to talk about this during his talk, but now he decided to include it. Feeling super excited, arranged for him and for my boss to have a meeting with me so we could discuss possible implications and see how to proceed.

We actually met by accident at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and discussed it then and there.

We spoke about collaborating by using our script to identify more of that phenomena in some of their mouse datasets with a specific mutation that impacts social behaviour and I was beyond excited! Also I'm proud to say that my flashtalk actually made my boss very pleased, and that my poster presentation attracted so many people that I could barely have a break for all of the duration of the session. All in all, this has been a great success and I'm overjoyed!

I was just concerned that my boss would think that I was chilling too much by constantly sitting with my previous colleagues during the main meals. Oops.

Some faces became familiar though, and a few I even looked forward to seeing. This was especially when it came to a certain group from New York. Their PI was one of those that are not only creative and intelligente but a really cool and decent person, full of tattoos and a big fan of classic rock. I think his lab definitely reflected that, and we got along really well. There were six of them and they were all amazing. We played pool together and spoke a lot after dinners, and at some point they said I should really come to New York for a few months. Frankly, that would also be beyond dreamy, but as of now I don't have a reason to do so, so let's wait to see what the future holds.

Someone told me that I could borrow a bike from the conference hotel, so I decided to try to do it to get to my Airbnb. So I did.

Drunk. In the dark. In a country I never cycled in.

Things were going smoothly until Google maps did this cute thing of telling me to go through a shady path again. For the sake of being clear: this path led me to a small island in the middle of a lake that only had a church on it, and it led to a dark forest. I decided that maybe I would try this route, and went forth to my fate.

"I'm the one who's from Rio, I'm the danger", I thought, stupidly.

It was a full moon, and the church bell rang at midnight, exactly the time that I was cycling past the church. I could only smell weed around me and seeing the straight path to the dark forest grow shorter and shorter as I neared the pitch black entrance of it. Some deep, deep fear struck me at last and I rushed to go back to the main road and take the longer path back to my Airbnb. This has been the most real Spooktober experience I ever had. Getting back to my treehouse really late, I never felt more alive from the adrenaline and unfortunately took a long time to calm myself to sleep.

For the final Gala dinner, we had a three course meal and prizes for best talks and posters. In the final networking session my ex-boss bought cocktails for me and my previous colleagues while we discussed topics such as sexism in academia, suspiscious podcasters, ambition and so on. More and more, I sense that she feels far more human since the last time I saw her and feel genuinely happy for the lab. I think there are many things that I would like to discuss with her that I feel would only be possible when I feel less intimidated by her. Maybe one day...

I decided to spend some time with the cold-shock lab and play pool with them and they asked "Yo, do you wanna do some RBM3?". As a translation: they were inviting me to go dive with them in the ocean in the middle of the night, in a very touchy way as well. I politely declined. At this point, without enough sleep, everything was too much for me and I crashed at Miho's room. This was not initially the plan, as I needed to check out from my treehouse, so I had to cycle there the next morning, also finally seeing how the forest looks like when I can actually see it, and to cycle back with my stuff to give my rented bike back.

My flight back was only in the evening, so I took the day to meet up with my previous summer student, who now lives in Copenhagen. We spoke about PhD applications and life. I gave her some advice after she was a bit heartbroken about her application situation, and she revealed to me certain romance conspiracy theories she had about me and certain colleagues. Her fanfiction-reader brain is fascinating. She said she wanted to get rid of some novels and asked if I did not want to take one. I insisted on paying for it and she happily took me to her dreamy historical dorm in the center of Copenhagen. She even had a sword!!!!!! And a decently sized studio!!!!! Life is so unfair.

I took my book and went to an Icelandic café that my student recommended me to go. At first I was slightly nervous about my boss possibly being upset that I was interacting a lot with previous colleagues instead of properly networking as much as I could, but couldn't check emails or messages since my phone's free data in the EU ran out, so I focused only on reading my little brainless tiktok romance novel while having some chai latte in this super charming Icelandic café for a few hours. They also had a dog. An old, blind and deaf girl, but a good girl nonetheless.

As I made my way to the airport I could finally check my messages and to my surprise my boss sent me a huge email about how happy he was with how things happened in the conference, and with many ideas of what to do next. Feeling the spirit of Hygge spread through my body, I bought a scented candle, a Moomin rotating candle holder (aren't they stealing Finland's culture?), and a black licorice pipe. You know, just the essentials to survive the rest of the year.
